cardiff games “The Cardiff Games will unite the sporting infrastructure in Cardiff by providing appropriate high quality competitions for over 7000 young people” The Cardiff Games was launched in 2012 as the departments flagship school sport legacy programme following the London Olympics and Paralympics. Since the introduction of appropriate level competitions to the Sport Cardiff schools programme in 2013 we have seen significant increases in participation figures. The Cardiff Games has now grown to include over 18 sports at 18 world class venues across the City. The Games consist of structured sport competitions across the capital in partnership with schools, National Governing Bodies, sports clubs and school sport associations under the banner of the Cardiff Games. The calendar creates a clear competition pathway for both primary and secondary schools that operates throughout the academic year from September through to July.

There are competitive opportunities for male and female pupils from year 2 up to year 10 and offers 10 inclusive opportunities throughout the year specifically for disabled and/or SEN pupils to take part. The Games are aimed at pupils of all abilities so that more young people have the opportunity to represent their school in sport and gain points towards the league tables (primary, secondary, Vale Schools, Inclusive league tables). Schools that have competed in the Cardiff Games have reported improvements in pupil attainment in school. The competitive element to the programme teaches key social and life skills such as teamwork, respect, discipline, dedication and sportsmanship as well as building emotional skills in self-confidence and self-esteem. There are regional heats in football, netball and athletics to ensure local opportunities for schools that will allow a reduction in travel commitments.
