Widening Access Information Day Friday 19th July 10am – 3pm Llandaff Campus School of Management This year the Summer School includes a unique chance for you to meet people in all the different academic schools at Cardiff Met and get all the information you need on what to do next. Why get involved in learning? Welcome to the Cardiff Metropolitan University Summer School for Adult Learners Living in such uncertain economic times, you may be worried about how you are going to develop your skills and reach your potential in such a difficult job market. Also, we understand all the commitments that come with modern life – work, family, social-life – it’s not easy juggling all of these things and considering studying at the same time. You may feel you aren’t bright enough to study at a University, perhaps you didn’t do well in school and life has taken them away from education. Often, adults who have been out of study for a long time lack the confidence to return to learning or think people will judge them harshly. At Cardiff Metropolitan University, we offer a range of FREE of charge, interesting learning opportunities. Our courses can help you to grow in confidence and help focus your career or learning plan. open to all adults regardless of their age, background, previous qualifications and experiences. Introduction to Watercolour Painting for Absolute Beginners
8 - 9 July Howard Gardens Campus
About the course Mono printing is a fun and creative way to develop unique drawings, cards and studies for further artworks such as paintings and sculptures. It has been well used by artists and is a simple technique to learn but has lots of potential for creativity and experimentation. On this course you will learn more about how artists have used mono printing, you will experiment with the technique to create a range of images in different sizes and colours. Mono printing is a little physically demanding and will require some trial and error to get the images you want, you will be well supported by an experienced tutor throughout this course.
So You Think You Can’t Draw? An Introduction to Drawing
10 - 12 July Howard Gardens Campus About the course Have you ever thought you would like to develop some artistic skills? Perhaps you have been too worried in the past that your work would not be good enough and you would simply lack talent. It is more likely that you lack confidence as everyone can create something beautiful in art. If this sounds like you then Introduction to Watercolour Painting is for you. It is for complete beginners and covers how to use and how to mix colour as well as a range of other techniques.
About the course This course designed to give you the opportunity to approach drawing in a variety of different ways. Inspiration is drawn from a number of sources including life models, music, still life and portraiture. Participants are encouraged to experiment with a variety of mediums including pencil, charcoal, graphite and ink. With one-to-one tutoring and a positive group environment, this course makes for an exciting chance to discover the many aspects and possibilities of drawing.

11 - 12 July or 18 - 19 July Llandaff Campus About the course Can’t afford a camera, and don’t think your mobile phone camera can take a decent photograph? Think again. This beginners workshop looks at the absolute basics in photographic composition, helping you to take better pictures, and identify what makes a photograph appealing to look at. Understand that any equipment, whether it be the oldest film camera, most expensive digital camera, or the camera on your mp3 player, can take a ‘good’ photograph if composed effectively. This class is aimed at absolute beginners, and acts as a simple introduction to the subject of art and design.

10 July Llandaff Campus About the course Many adults are returning to learning and with this comes the need for really encouraging and inspirational tutors. This course looks at the skills required by those who feel they could really make a difference in helping others through teaching adults. The session is relaxed, interactive and an enjoyable way of finding out more about a potential new career for yourself. You will discuss the role of the tutor; look at the way in which personal motivation can impact upon learning; identify techniques and methods that promote successful learning; and explore potential progression routes for further study. So if you want to fund out more about teaching adults, this course is for you. It’s a great introduction to the PGCE/PCE which will qualify you to be a teacher of adults.

This course is designed as an introduction for those who wish to undertake professional training in youth and community work and those who would like to know more about studying in this area. It is ideal for: • People who care about their community and want to know more • Youth or community workers without much experience of studying Themes that will be developed within the course include: learning from experience; coping in new surroundings and understanding others. This course is a great introduction to Cardiff Met’s Youth & Community Education BA.
Have you a tale to tell? Would you like to try writing autobiography or stories for children? Maybe there’s a poem or a play inside you. This course for beginners, or those who could benefit from a recap, will look at the fundamentals of form, description, characterisation, imagery and voice. You will be equipped with the skills to create your own poems and stories. Enjoy sharing and discussing with others while learning how to develop your own writing voice. With an emphasis on capturing a sense of place, the sessions will also include site visits to help hone your observational skills and stimulate your imagination. This course is an excellent introduction to the BA English Literature and Creative Writing degree.

Have you ever wondered where chocolate comes from or how lovely delicious chocolate is actually made?
This two day course has been designed to introduce you to the science that takes place in our baked products. Day one will look at fermented products such bread and bun goods. The outcome of this days activity will allow you to understand the basic needs of fermented products and of course to produce some quality products. Day two will look at developing cake making skills through the ever popular cup cake.
This session offers you the chance to find out more about the history of chocolate, where it comes from and the difference between UK and continental varieties of chocolate. You will also take part in a practical chocolate making session and you will even get to take home the samples that you make!

Why can’t they build more council housing? What is stock transfer? What is the Welsh Housing Quality Standard? This course looks at current issues in housing in Wales and how local people can become involved in housing in their communities and as a career.
Psychology is a fascinatingly diverse subject that appeals to many people. From the course you will gain an introduction into the study of psychology through consideration of some of the main subject areas such as social behaviour of people; children and their development and understanding the brain to understand behaviour.
This course is an introduction for people who would like to know more about housing. Anyone with an interest in housing is welcome to join. This course is especially suitable for tenants and residents, adults thinking about returning to education or a career change or wishing to develop new skills. This short course is an excellent introduction to the BSc Housing Policy and Practice degree at Cardiff Met.
We will also introduce the types of methods that psychologists use to understand human behaviour. Each workshop will involve mini-lectures as well as practical activities, to aid an understanding of the research base of psychology.
Introduction to Complementary Therapies 17 - 19 July Llandaff Campus About the course This Introductory Course will give an overview of Complementary Therapies in general as well as more specific information on some of the different therapies available and their benefits. We will learn how to carry out a simple Indian head massage routine as a group and also enjoy a basic introduction to Aromatherapy, Holistic Massage, Reflexology and Reiki. The course will be a mix of basic theory and practical application and is intended to be enjoyable, fun and motivating!

About the course This course has been designed to introduce the students to the workings of the events industry, the role of an event organiser and look at the skills and knowledge required to successfully plan and deliver events. It will be an ideal course for individuals that want to consider a career within the events industry and will also act as a stepping stone into a more structured education programme. The emphasis of the course will be hands on and use real life scenarios that will give the students examples of the many different aspects of the industry. As excellent team working and communication skills are vital within all aspects of events the sessions will be designed to initiate group discussion and will be tailored to the needs of each particular group that is being taught at any one time. The types of subject area covered will be a background of the industry, characteristics of events, planning & coordination, risk management, cultural awareness etc. Completion of the course will enable participants to identify key event requirements and understand the internal and external factors which can impact upon a successful event.

Further learning in this subject is available through a number of different pathways including the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL). This course is also useful for anyone thinking of returning to study in Higher Education.

Deaf and Deafblind Awareness 9 - 10 July or 16 - 17 July Llandaff Campus About the course The aim of the session is for attendees to gain an understanding of the effect of deafness and deafblindness on people and how communication between them and hearing/sighted people can be improved. By the end of the session those attending should be able to state appropriate statistics in the UK; understand the nature of deafness and deafblindness and their effect on communication; have a brief outline of related culture; demonstrate basic hand communication with deaf and deafblind people; explain the nature of lip reading; and describe the various aids to communication.

About the course The Writing Skills for University course is for students whose second language is English, looking to improve their writing skills to study in the UK. The course will develop all aspects of students writing skills for university. Areas of study include how to structure assignments, data interpretation, research different writing styles and the best use of language. Students will have the opportunity to take part in spoken discussions, so that they develop selfconfidence in expressing their views before writing.
About the course If you are interested in studying but your first language is not English, you may have some concerns about accessing learning. This is a great course for anyone in that position. Throughout the course you will find out more about the options available to you and the steps you would need to improve your English for accessing Higher Education. Students can be introduced to local religious groups such as the Christian Union, the local Islamic Community, the Sikh or Hindu community and many others.There is a large variety of places to worship in Cardiff no matter what faith you follow. At Cardiff Met we have a number of facilities which are suitable spaces set aside for meditation, prayer or reflection. We have male and female Muslim prayer rooms on all campuses which are available to all Muslim students.

Staff Mentor If you have any concerns before or whilst you are studying with us, a staff mentor will be on hand to advise on all aspects of university life. Everything will be treated confidentially. You can inform us that you have been in care via the UCAS application form. By doing this, we can identify any support that you may need before or during your time at Cardiff Met. *This package has been designed for care leavers whose permanent residence is in the United Kingdom and who are ‘home’ students for fee purposes. The support is available to students who declare on the UCAS application that they have been in care (looked after by a local authority/ foster carers).
Full details of the student’s social worker must be supplied and there are strict eligibility criteria that must be met to receive this support: • A student who has been in care since the age of 14 must have been in care for no less than 6 months. • A student who has been in care from the age of 16 must have been in care for no less than 3 months. • Students must be under the age of 25. Take Junction 29 off the M4 and travel westward on the A48(M). Turn at the Llanederyn junction, take 1st exit towards city centre, stay in left lane. At roundabout take the 2nd exit onto A4161 (Newport Road). Continue on A4161 signposted city centre for approx. 1.8 miles, passing the Cardiff Royal Infirmary on the left, then take the 2nd left into Howard Place. This turning is before Mercure Holland House Hotel and Spa. • At the end of Howard Place turn right. • Howard Gardens campus is immediately on the left
The West: • Take Junction 32 off the M4 and join the A470 towards the city centre. • Follow signs for city centre onto Gabalfa overpass and continue on North Road to city centre. • Stay in left lane, turn left onto Boulevard De Nantes, passing City Hall on left. • At next set of traffic light stay in the middle lane, continue onto Dumfries Place. • Follow road staying in the middle lane through set of traffic lights and pass under railway bridge. • Move to right hand lane and at next set of traffic lights turn right onto Fitzalan Road and move into left hand lane. Take the1st left before Cardiff Court. • At traffic lights turn left. • Take the 1st left onto Howard Gardens Road and follow the road to the left. • Howard Gardens campus is immediately on the left.
