Welcome to the UWIC CPPD Summer School 2010 Many adults have dreams about a new career or learning something new for fun. But many think that going to University and studying somewhere like UWIC is not for them. They may think that they have missed their chance in life to become a student and that they wouldn’t fit in. The UWIC CPPD Summer School for adults may be the first step in achieving these dreams and is open to all adults regardless of their age, background, previous qualifications and experiences. We offer lots of free of charge short courses to give adults a chance to try something new, to find out what it is like to be a student and hopefully to inspire you to take your learning further in the future. UWIC CPPD Summer School courses are available across UWIC campuses as well as in centres throughout Cardiff. All locations are easily accessible by car or public transport. Last year many of the adults who attended the UWIC CPPD Summer School went on to enrol on a further course at UWIC in September, many onto Foundation Level 0 courses, and some straight onto degrees. This year that could be you! The UWIC CPPD Summer School is a great opportunity to try something new, for fun or to improve your career potential. What’s on Offer? The UWIC CPPD Summer School offers introduction courses to lots of subjects that can be studied at a higher level at UWIC. All courses are free of charge and are a great way of trying a subject before committing to a longer period of study at UWIC. What are study skills? These are real, practical skills which are essential for anyone thinking of becoming a student. If you have good study skills, they will help you to get the most out of your course and also, crucial employability skills which can help you get a good start in your career. Study skills can range from study and revision planning; time management, balancing study with other aspects of home life; developing good presentation skills; to the more academic requirements of critical thinking, analysis, essay structuring and exam performance. Many adult students, returning to study after a break, may benefit from learning some of these skills. Regardless of background, ability and level of experience, study skills can provide crucial help, whatever the circumstances.

About the course: This course will introduce you to contemporary drawing techniques that enable you to find new ways of looking at your subject. By engaging your senses (touch, smell etc) it will help you to gain a personal understanding of your subject. You will undertake exciting exercises and use a range of materials including charcoal, pencil and chalk to create work. This course will focus on the style of the individual and there will be lots of personal feedback from the tutor. We will also work on developing sketchbooks and this will add to the development of your personal visual language. Anyone can draw! Come along and see for yourself just what you can achieve! You can bring a range of paper, sketchbooks, charcoal, pencils, pens, an eraser, and any other materials you wish to experiment with. The tutor will also bring paper and other materials that can be purchased during the course.
Exploring Drawing Length of course: 2 Days Date of Course: 12 - 13 July 10am – 3pm Venue: Howard Gardens Campus A5.06 About the course: This two-day course is designed to give you the opportunity to experience drawing in a variety of ways, taking inspiration from several sources including life models, music, still life and the imagination. With helpful one-to-one tutoring and group discussions, this course makes for an exciting chance to discover the many aspects and possibilities of drawing.
Length of course: 3 Days Date of course: 5 - 7 July 10am - 4pm Venue: Howard Gardens 2nd floor studio About the course: Words are familiar to us all, especially in today’s media-saturated society. This course will give you the opportunity to understand and harness some of the basic techniques for expression through type, which could be applied to the creation of posters, leaflets, C.V.’s, websites, letterheads, etc. You will learn to understand typography in relation to your own life and uses, and build your skills in design programs such as Adobe Photoshop, or freeware equivalents, as well as scanning and image manipulation. You will see the creative use of freeware programs available to all, and commonly used programs such as Word, to ensure that you can develop your technical skills and practice within and outside of the course.

An Introduction to Oil Painting Length of course: 2 Days Date of Course: 19 - 20 July 10am – 3pm Venue: Howard Gardens Campus A5.06 About the course: Introduction to Oil Painting is a course designed to explore the technical aspects of oil paint. The course will cover a study of colour and mixing along with other useful techniques. Inspiration will be drawn from still-life working within the life room. With helpful one-to-one tutoring and group discussions, this course makes for an exciting introduction to the complex medium of oil paint.

Students will experiment with a variety of drawing strategies and exercises leading to more self-directed studies as the session progresses. About the course: This one day course will look at the skills required by those wishing to teach adults. The day aims to be relaxed, interactive and enjoyable.
About the course: This course will provide potential students with the skills to understand the rigor of academic writing. It provides practical skills in the process of the production of a portfolio with the emphasis on being a reflective practitioner. The course will ensure the process of writing is a style that links theory with practice and visa versa, in a balanced and critical manner, and will consider the benefits of supervision in the processes above.
You will discuss the role of the tutor; look at the way in which personal motivation can impact upon learning; examine techniques and methods that promote successful learning; and explore potential progression routes for further study.
The course will provide students with support and practical skills that will enable them to have more confidence on the Youth Studies and Community Education Foundation and BA Degree courses.

European and Global connections will be linked to funding opportunities available from a number of sources to pursue such international activity. It will encourage students/professional youth and community workers to volunteer their services overseas. It will also consider the opportunities for young people to develop their professional competencies in an International context, and to work towards meeting the requirements of the Millennium Development goals.
Themes that will be developed within the course include: learning from experience; coping in new surroundings and understanding others. This course is a great introduction to UWIC’s Youth and Community Education BA.

The course can also encourage continued professional development, motivation and support to those working in the above sectors. The course will assist those who have not fully considered professional training in helping them to understand and decide on the various full and part time routes in gaining academic and professional accreditations. An underlying factor of the course is to understand the balance required between work, study and personal life.

About the course: This enjoyable introductory session will give a brief history and overview of Aromatherapy and will explain what essential oils are and their benefits. Essential oils can be used most effectively in therapeutic massage but there are other ways of using them. Safety aspects and contraindications will be discussed and we will look at some examples of essential oils, their properties and how we might use them in everyday life to reduce the use of chemicals in our homes.

What is stock transfer? What is the Welsh Housing Quality Standard? This course looks at current issues in housing in Wales and how local people can become involved in housing in their communities and as a career. This course is an introduction for people who would like to know more about housing. Anyone with an interest in housing is welcome to join. This course is especially suitable for tenants and residents, adults thinking about returning to education or a career change or wishing to develop new skills. This short course is an excellent introduction to the BSc Housing Policy and Practice degree at UWIC.

Would you like to help someone to be independent and remain in their home? Supported housing can involve working with many different groups of people: older people; young people; people with disabilities; people with learning disabilities; people with mental health issues; homeless people and people with drug or alcohol issues. This course is an introduction for people who would like to know more about housing and support. Any one with an interest in housing and support is welcome to join. If you are a “people person” and would like to find out more about supported housing and learn some new skills then this is the course for you. About the course: These sessions explore the subject of anger and suggest tools to manage it. Whether in learning, working or life in general, anger can have a destructive effect on us and those around us. By examining what causes anger and developing a 'Keep Your Cool' tool kit with which to handle it, these classes offer a way to navigate the challenges of personal and professional life more smoothly. Methods to help with anger such as assertiveness, breathing techniques, problem-solving strategies, better communication, humour and constructive expression will also be taught.

The course will explore a little of Welsh Culture and History, develop an awareness of other cultures, and discuss how to recognise ‘Culture Shock’ in yourself and others. About the course: The aim of the session is for attendees to gain an understanding of the effect of deafness and deafblindness on people and how communication between them and hearing/sighted people can be improved. About the course: This course aims to encourage us to think about how we read, and how we can improve our reading skills by looking at critical reading techniques. We will be focussing on reading styles such as skimming, scanning and study reading and looking at ways to analyse, understand and evaluate texts to get the most out of our studies. This is a useful course for those about to start on any programme of learning, as we will be exploring what kind of learner you are and how you can utilise this to fulfil your learning potential.
The course will explore how we manage time at the moment, finding out how we really spend our time. It will also examine how to prioritize and how to make small changes first, and how to plan to make the best use of our time .

Writing for Fun Length of course: 5 Days Date of course: 12 - 16 July 10am – 2pm Venue: Llandaff Campus Room D3.12 About the course: (Please note that this course does not include the use of computers). The aim of the course is to simply have fun with being creative, to make the process of writing accessible to all types of people, regardless of gender, age or culture. It is an accessible course that aims to inspire and provide a starting point for people to discover and develop their interests and talents. Via a series of writing exercises that literally get the creative juices flowing, we will explore examples of creative writing, find out what inspires the students and hopefully provide inspiration from the selected pieces and personal experiences. By the end of the course you will have produced you own unique piece of writing, which will be printed and presented together with all the students work to form a book.

Outreach Summer School Committee Skills Rumney Community Centre 20 July 10am - 3pm A well chaired and disciplined committee uses the time of busy people in an effective way to govern an organisation or oversee a project. This course is built around the role and conduct of the Chair, the implementation of appropriate committee conduct and the roles and responsibilities of committee members. Participants will understand how a committee works, be able to recognise the different styles that Chairs adopt to manage a committee and have the ability and knowledge required to become an effective committee member.

This is a short demonstration that deals with the issues of bad diet and how the ingredients of food can affect our well-being and health. Learn the art of healthy eating on a budget, how to involve your kids in healthy eating and learn hints and tips on how to get your 5-a-day into the daily diet of your partners and kids. A fun interactive session suitable for adults and children alike.
The aim of the session is for attendees to gain an understanding of the effect of deafness and deafblindness on people and how communication between them and hearing/sighted people can be improved.

Introduction to Complementary Therapies Michaelston Adult Centre 6 July 10am – 3pm Rumney Community Centre 8 July 10am – 3pm Powerhouse 14 July 10am – 3pm This introductory session will give a brief overview of Complementary Therapies, its growth in use and what it’s used for, as well as general information on some of the different therapies available and their benefits. It will also include an example of an Indian head massage routine which we can practice together as a group. This introductory course will be a mix of basic theory and practical application and is intended to be enjoyable, fun and motivating!

This course looks at current issues in housing in Wales and how local people can become involved in housing in their communities and as a career.

Introduction to Preparing to Teach Adults Eastmoors Community Centre 20 July 10am – 3pm St Mellons Community Centre 22 July 10am – 3pm This one day course will look at the skills required by those wishing to teach adults. The day aims to be relaxed, interactive and enjoyable. You will discuss the role of the tutor; look at the way in which personal motivation can impact upon learning; examine techniques and methods that promote successful learning; and explore potential progression routes for further study. So if you want to find out more about teaching adults, this course is for you. It’s a great introduction to the PGCE/Cert Ed Post Compulsory Education and Training.
Introduction to Reflexology Michaelston Adult Centre 7 July 10am – 3pm Rumney Community Centre 13 July 10am - 3pm In a basic introduction you will learn what reflexology is and the benefits of using it. You will be given an explanation of foot charts and zones of the feet. This will include a practical application to involve group participation. The session will continue with a brief history of the developments within reflexology and the techniques used to give a treatment. Some common conditions, contraindications and simple anatomy of the feet will also be looked at.

Supported housing can involve working with many different groups of people: older people; young people; people with disabilities; people with learning disabilities; people with mental health issues; homeless people and people with drug or alcohol issues. This course is an introduction for people who would like to know more about housing and support. Any one with an interest in housing and support is welcome to join. If you are a “people person” and would like to find out more about supported housing and learn some new skills then this course is the course for you. Our Presentation Skills course aims to help you to deliver presentations more effectively and successfully. We will look at all aspects of preparing and delivering effective presentations, enhancing your own presentation skills and encouraging you to develop new ideas and reflect on existing methods. The course will help you to reflect on the principles and processes involved in making effective presentations and explain the key features of an effective presentation. It will also demonstrate the use of various presentation techniques and assess delivery strategies appropriate for your needs.
Stress Management Personal Financial Management Michaelston Adult Centre 5 July 10am – 3pm Severn Road 7 July 10am – 3pm Gabalfa Community Centre 12 July 10am – 3pm In a room of 100 average people, 60 will have money problems each year. The problems may only be small ones - perhaps a bill, credit card payment or a car repair they can’t afford - but if they are not handled properly they can turn into serious debt. Understand how credit works before you need to borrow. This course can’t tell you all there is to know about personal finance, but it will help you make the most of the opportunities ahead of you.
