The UWIC CPPD Summer School for adults may be the first step in an exciting new journey and is open to all adults regardless of their age, background, previous qualifications and experiences. Last year many of the adults who attended the UWIC CPPD Summer School went on to enrol on a further course at UWIC in September, many onto Foundation Level 0 courses, and some straight onto degrees. This year that could be you!
With all the commitments that come with modern life - work, family, social-life - it is easy to start feeling a little rusty around the edges. Many adults feel they aren’t bright enough to study, perhaps they didn’t do well in school and life has taken them away from education. Often, adults who have been out of study for a long time lack the confidence to return to learning or think people will judge them harshly.
The UWIC CPPD Summer School is a great opportunity to try something new, for fun or to improve your career potential. Trying a Summer School course might just be the start of something exciting, which could open more doors for you!
At UWIC’s Centre for Personal & Professional Development (CPPD), we offer a range of FREE of charge, exciting new learning opportunities. By enrolling on one of our courses, you may never look back!

A collaborative project between UWIC’s Widening Access Team and English Language Training Centre (ELTC) has provided first-class and accessible learning opportunities for minority communities in Cardiff. The ‘Preparing for International English Language Testing System’ programme, delivers bespoke English Language classes for refugees and asylum seekers at community venues and has helped to raise the aspirations of non-traditional learners, removing many of the barriers to education that they face. Mohammed Abdeltam, who left Sudan in 2006, provided his reasons for attending the classes, he said: “I really want to improve my English language skills so that I can continue my education. I already have qualifications in Dental Technology but I have to pass this certificate so that I can enter university.”
As well as developing the confidence and self-belief of the participants, several learners who have completed the programme, which is funded by UWIC’s Centre for Personal & Professional Development, have successfully accessed university courses in South Wales. The project, which is supported by Refugee Voice Wales and the Welsh Refugee Council, has recently been short-listed for ‘Widening Participation Initiative of the Year’ at the Times Higher Education magazine’s 2010 annual awards.
“At first I found the course quite difficult but the tutor has been very helpful and I really enjoy it now. It has improved my communication skills and I’ve also met lots of new people from different backgrounds.” 2

Package of support for Care Leavers
Staff Mentor
After the Summer School, if you are a care leaver* and you are thinking of studying at UWIC, we can offer a wide range of support which will help you when you are a student.
If you have any issues or concerns prior to coming to UWIC and/or whilst you are studying, UWIC has a staff mentor who is on hand to advise on all aspects of university life. All questions and issues will be treated confidentially and only referred on with your permission.
Care Leavers Support Meeting Once you have been offered a place to study at UWIC (before enrolment), we will offer you a meeting to discuss your situation and the support you think you might need. As well as you and the staff mentor, this can include your Social Worker, representatives from UWIC’s accommodation department and the school you will be joining. This meeting will allow us to establish how much financial support is available, the type of accommodation you would prefer and, where appropriate, make provision for any additional support you may need.
Accommodation UWIC can guarantee year round accommodation (including Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays) in UWIC halls, but whatever you choose, we will try to ensure that the type of accommodation is appropriate to your needs.
You can inform us that you have been in care via the UCAS application form. By doing this, we can identify any support that you may need before or during your time at UWIC.
* This package has been designed for care leavers whose permanent residence is in the United Kingdom and who are ‘home’ students for fee purposes. The support is available to students who declare on the UCAS application that they have been in care (looked after by a local authority/ foster carers). Full details of the student’s social worker must be supplied and there are strict eligibility criteria that must be met to receive this support: • A student who has been in care since the age of 14 must have been in care for no less than 6 months. • A student who has been in care from the age of 16 must have been in care for no less than 3 months. • Students must be under the age of 25.
Financial Support We will do all we can to ensure that the costs associated with your studies here do not prevent you from completing your programme of study and will work with you to achieve this. A Care Leavers Bursary of £1,000 pa may be available; there are strict eligibility criteria that must be met and details of your Social Worker must be supplied. If you find that you are struggling financially, we can help you with budgeting advice and prioritise your application for Financial Contingency Funds.
