What is Widening Access? At Cardiff Metropolitan University we aim to ensure that adults of any background or ethnic group are given a fair and equal opportunity to study in a supported manner. We are committed to ensuring that everyone with the determination, skills and desire to access Higher Education should be able to do so. We work to provide opportunities for learners in their own communities, targeting those who have not previously had the opportunity to study in Higher Education. If for whatever reason, in the past, you may have felt that a higher education is not for you, we have introduced a range of short courses which are designed to provide a pathway to study at University. We will consider a wide range of entry qualifications for full-time and part-time study. Very often experience counts for a lot and each person who wants to study with us is looked at on a case by case basis.

How can you take part in learning? Community Outreach At Cardiff Met we understand how important it is to work closely with local communities to help raise aspirations and encourage people who may think higher education is “not for them” to start thinking about the opportunities available to them. We work with partner organizations to bring learning to the local community. We are committed to working with a wide range of partners to develop projects and activities which give as wide a range of people as possible the chance to try new forms of learning, in their own communities. We put on free taster and level 3 accredited courses in communities throughout the year for adults who are interested in trying something new or looking to develop their skills. Courses can be linked to subjects that you can then take up at a higher level at Cardiff Met. Cardiff Met Summer School The Cardiff Met Summer School is run each June and provides an opportunity for adults to try some new learning for free. We offer a wide range of free courses on campus where you are able to see all the facilities available when studying at Cardiff Met. An example of how to progress from Community courses to study at University At Cardiff Met we design our courses to offer a taste of a particular subject studied in the community which can offer progression and lead to University. Here is an example of one of our pathways into Higher Education:
Introduction to Psychology Free Non-Accredited Course usually delivered 2 hours a week for 5 weeks, 10 hours of learning. Delivered in the Community and our Adult Learner Summer School. Ideal for complete beginners interested in finding out more about studying Psychology in a friendly environment.
Introducing the Social Sciences: Psychology Module Free Accredited Course (level 3) usually delivered 3 hours a week for 8 weeks, 24 hours of learning. This module is delivered in the community. This course will introduce students to some of the key perspectives in psychology, for example biological, cognitive behavours and pshchodynamic perspective. Those who successfully complete the course are guaranteed a place on the Foundation in Social Sciences.
Foundation leading to BA/BSc Social Sciences This course is also intended to widen access and participation for 'return to learning' students who wish to embark upon an Honours degree programme. The course will develop your confidence and competence in acquiring the study skills required to embark upon a social science Honours degree such as BSc (Hons) Psychology.

BSc (Hons) Psychology The course is professionally accreditited by the British Psychological Society. The first year introduces all the key skills and knowledge to be developed over the three years of the full-time programme. The second year develops core knowledge and skills required for the British Psychological Society accreditation. Furthermore, we offer work-based learning opportunities here. In the final year you will undertake your own research in an area of psychology that interests you, and complete a range of optional modules. You will be supported throughout your studies by an assigned personal tutor, as well as lecturers in all the modules

Career Employability We support students in gaining as much experience as they can during their studies with us. The second year offers further opportunities to gain experience with a volunteering and work-based learning module. This encourages the application of psychological knowledge to real-world situations. The course is an ideal foundation for further study in postgraduate psychology courses leading to a qualification as an occupational, educational, clinical, and forensic or health psychologist, and also leads to other postgraduate courses such as PGCE. Graduates will also be able to enter careers in personnel management, advertising, health promotion and many areas of industry. For further information on careers: www.bps.org.uk

Example of Learner’s Journey Leah’s Journey I attended Willows High School and left with all my GCSE’s at grades B and C. I went straight into a hairdressing apprenticeship and worked towards my level one, two and three NVQ in hairdressing while working in a salon. I have worked in many salons across Cardiff and gained ten years’ experience. For five of those years I was a mobile hairdresser offering my hairdressing services to my regular clientele around Cardiff in the comfort of their own home. Being unsure about what I really wanted to do was something that always held me back, that is why I attended Cardiff Met’s Summer school where they do taster days. After this, I applied to do my PCET/PGCE. I also think money and giving up work hours to do a course was always a reason for not studying. Student Finance helped with this I started teaching with ACT Training, by doing my work experience there and showing them, I was eager to work. As soon as there was a job opening, I applied straight away and was offered the job. I am now working with adults with learning difficulties and am very happy, I really enjoy going to work everyday. I consider myself a hands on person, rather than academic. I struggled at first, but cannot believe how much I have improved and I have even shocked myself looking back at my growth. Previously my confidence held me back, when I started the course I was too petrified to even stand in front of the class and read something out. I cannot believe that I now stand in front of groups of adults daily without a second thought. Technology was another struggle, I could not even format my first essay, I spent days trying to change the font and 6
layout to meet standards, but again, my skills have improved massively, and I use technology in my new job daily. The Tutors at Cardiff Met are always available; I could ring my tutors, email them or arrange a chat anytime, they offer great support. My boyfriend is a great emotional support, helping me deal with the stress of juggling everything. He helps me break things down and reminds me when times are tough that I have grown massively and half way to my end goal. My mother in law is also great, she has done this course herself and teaches IT, so she helped me with formatting and using technology I was unfamiliar with. My advice to new Learners would be don’t be afraid to ask for help, there is always help available. I have made great friends and contacts in Cardiff Met and I gained my job before I even finished the course and I am earning more money,

Housing Studies Why can’t we build more housing? What is Welfare Reform? What do the new changes to benefits mean for me? This course looks at current issues in housing and how people can become involved in housing in their communities and as a career. Housing is a growing sector which offers a range of rewarding careers, with many different job roles and lots of opportunities. This course is especially suitable for tenants and residents who want to develop their skills and knowledge, adults thinking about returning to education or a career change or anyone wishing to develop new skills. Many opportunities exist within the public, private or voluntary sectors where you can work and volunteer in areas such as housing advice, housing support, homelessness prevention and tenant participation. Anyone with an intersest in housing and getting involved in their community is welcome to join.

Migration and Globalisation What do we really know about migration? It has been part of human history since before biblical times, but today’s migrations can cause turmoil and hatred. This course will look at why people migrate from one country to another, whether they can ever go ‘home’ and what the consequences are for the migrants, the places they leave behind and the places where they arrive.

Introduction to Psychology Psychology is a fascinatingly diverse subject that appeals to many people. From the course you will gain an introduction into the study of psychology through consideration of some of the main subject areas such as social behaviour of people, child development and understanding the brain to understand behaviour. The Truth About Sugar The main aim of this short course is to introduce dierent types of sugar and look at techniques to reduce and/or replace sugar in food. Sewing / Upcycling with Stitch This workshop will explore the different functions and settings of the sewing machine where you will have a chance to sample different seams, hems and darts. Transferable Skills for Business CEA3003 This module has been designed to introduce the participants to the skills they will need for day to day life as well as the world of employment. These “softer skills” are increasingly seen as a vital element to employees in the 21st century. On completion the students will be able to: Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of personality, perception, motivation and group dynamics and their influence on individual attitudes and employability opportunities. Reflective Skills SCM3004 This course is taught in partnership with the University's Centre for Work Based Learning. You will be assessed via a reflective portfolio which means that you will be expected to keep a reflective log/diary and develop a reflective account based on a learning experience that you have had, for example, reflecting on another Widening Access taster course you have attended. Reflection is a technique that helps to reenforce learning that has taken place. It is a very powerful tool for self-development and to imrpove learning. This course helps you to understand what reflection is and how to use it to develop your personal and professional development, it supports you to be able to write reflectively and gives you techniques to be able to introduce reflective practice into your daily thought processes.

Community Philosophy Community or ‘grass roots philosophy’ is an established practice where a facilitator will use a model of philosophical discussion, based on the Socratic method of ‘community of enquiry’, to facilitate group discussion for considering life’s big questions. Community philosophy is about the process of philosophising. Its role in community and adult learning, when groups come together to discuss life’s big questions: it has been successfully used as a model to help some groups to make a transition into mainstream society - this has included elite sports professionals, prisoners and people with mental health needs.

Getting Started in Journalism This taster course introduces the craft of writing news articles and feature articles. The course aims to provide a basic understanding of writing in these two journalistic styles. Introduction to Youth and Community Education More and more people are keen to make a difference in their communities but lack the knowledge about how best to get involved. This course is designed as an introduction for those who wish to undertake professional training in youth and community work and those who would like to know more about studying in this area. It is ideal for people who care about their community and want to know more, and it is also good for youth or community workers with little previous experience of studying. Themes that will be developed within the course include: learning from experience, coping in new surroundings and understanding others. This course will provide an insight into the roles and skills required by those working with young people in the community. You will identify and assess different communities and define the concepts of youth and young people.

Frequently asked questions! What is the cost to study the non-accredited and the accredited modules? All of our Widening Access non accredited and accredited modules will be free.
Do I need any prior qualifications? Non-accredited taster courses No qualifications are required to attend the non-accredited taster courses. Accredited modules You will need to have a minimum of GCSE English Language level C or above or equivalent to attend the accredited modules. You will also be required to attend each session, as it is essential that you have a minimum of 80% attendance to pass.
Course details The courses are for students who have busy lives and existing commitments, such as work or family commitments. We plan the times to enable you to fit around school times for dropping off and picking up children and to fit into your existing schedule. You will need to do work in the form of essays, reports or do research in your own time outside of the classroom. This can include all sorts of things, such as reading and taking notes, doing homework, getting books from the library, and working on assignments. However, you will receive a lot of support from your tutor to help you do a good job. The assessments are designed to enhance your learning experience; they will hine your skills to enable you to study at Higher education level. Other than that, all you need is enthusiasm for studying, determination and a commitment to work during the course. Non-accredited taster courses There is no requirement to do any study other than in the classroom. Accredited modules You will need to attend classes regularly and be on time. 25

How much will it cost me? It might not cost you as much as you think to study with Cardiff Met; for a start all our Widening Access Courses and the Cardiff Met Summer School courses are FREE OF CHARGE. If you decide to progress onto one of our degree programmes, the usual University tuition fees will apply. The prospect of going to University is probably very exciting but the thought of managing your finances, maybe for the first time, may seem daunting and a bit overwhelming. Student Finance and Welfare Advisory Service The Student Finance and Welfare Advisory Service is part of Cardiff Met's Student Services and offers confidential, impartial and non-judgemental advice on all aspects of student finance and it's FREE to all Cardiff Met students and prospective students. Here are some of the things that we're able to offer: One-to-one interviews with a Student Finance andWelfare Adviser. Advice on budgeting and money management. Advice on what financial support is available and where to find it. Information on changes to fees and financial support. Help with debt problems. Advice on benefits whilst you are a student. Will studying at Cardiff Met allow me to practice my faith? The Chaplaincy in Cardiff Metropolitan University is open, friendly and multifaith. The Chaplain, Paul Fitzpatrick, is the Student Services member responsible for all matters of faith and for defending and promoting individual students’ freedom of belief. This is no small job. Cardiff Metropolitan University is multicultural and multi-faith, with over 92 faith traditions from 140 different countries. We have shared-faith prayer rooms on all campuses. The Chaplaincy is a place for those of all faiths and those of none. There is always a welcome and a confidential chat in a safe environment is often helpful (the coffee is also excellent!).

Student Societies Student societies exist to provide support to people of faith. These include the Christian Union and the Islamic society. Where no specific society exists to meet the particular spiritual needs of students, Cardiff Met SU invites students to form their own society. I have Childcare responsibilities. How can I study with Cardiff Met? Some of our Community Outreach courses offer crèche facilities whilst studying in a community location, however, this must normally be booked in advance. Also, some of our degree programmes are part time and can fit around your childcare requirements.
I don’t have access to transport to get to Cardiff Met Our campuses are all easily accessible by public transport. Please call for details. Don’t worry, we offer many Widening Access courses at locations throughout Cardiff. Please ring for more details.
I can only attend Single Sex classes. Can I still study with Cardiff Met? We sometimes offer Widening Access community outreach classes on a single sex basis. Please call for details.

I don’t have the skills or confidence to study at Cardiff Met Many adults who return to education feel like this when they first start. The Widening Access team run courses to help you improve your academic skills. Academic Skills include learning how to use computers, how to write essays, how to give a presentation. In fact pretty much all the skills you need to study at Cardiff Met. We are sure that our Widening Access courses will help give you that confidence to improve your skills. If you become a student at Cardiff Met you can access a great deal of support to help with your studies or juggling a busy lifestyle. Can I come to an Open Day as an adult learner? Whether you've already made your mind up that Cardiff Met is the place for you; or whether you're still deciding, attending one of our Open Days is essential. I speak English as a second language and I am not sure if I would struggle as a student. Is there any support I can access to help me apply to go to University? Throughout the year we run a course which is designed to help people who want help with Academic English to study in University. Students who have English as a second language generally need to get something called an IELTS’s score of at least a level 6.0 to access University. IELTS stands for “International English Language Testing System” and covers academic English skills in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Our course “Preparing for IELTS” runs once a week in and it is free of charge. By studying on this programme, we support you to improve your IELTS score so that you become ready to apply for University.
Can I access any careers advice to make sure I apply for the right course? At Cardiff Met, Career Development Services are active in encouraging and supporting adult returners to re-enter education and get the most out of student life once here. We can assist in helping find the right course in relation to current life priorities, educational background and work needs. For most people decisions on their careers are a process, not a one-off event.
