Season Preview
Following its most successful season in 16 years, a talented and experienced UW-Stevens Point men’s hockey team aims to replicate last season’s success in 2014-15.
of UW-Stevens Point’s 133 goals last season, as Kyle Sharkey, Joe Kalisz, Scott Henegar, Lawrence Cornellier, Nick D’Avolio and Alex Brooks are all back in addition Ladd, Brodie and Gibson. Despite all the returning talent, Brooks highlighted the return of sophomore forward Eliot Grauer and the contribution of junior captain Evan Dixon as vital parts to the upcoming season.
In 2013-14, UW-Stevens Point made it all the way to the national championship game for the first time since 1998, before falling 3-1 to St. Norbert to finish as the national runner-up for the third time in program history. The Pointers compiled a 22-6-2 overall record, the most wins by a UWSP team since 1999-2000, and defeated St. Thomas and Oswego State on their way to the national title game. “Even though we lost in the national championship game, I still take that as a very positive experience,” head coach Chris Brooks said of last season. “We are returning 22 guys from that team that were all there to experience the opportunity to play in the national tournament. I think it’s only going to help us moving forward with the culture and expectation. All of the guys being able to taste it last season left that taste in our mouth, so now they want it again.” Gone from last season is a group of four seniors of Tyler Krueger, Kyle Politz, Max Bobrow and Kyle Heck. “Those are four guys that were here when I got hired that stuck with it and played a big part in the growth of our program,” Brooks said of the departed seniors. “They should have a lot of pride in what they did and we’re going to miss a lot of what those four brought to the team.” UW-Stevens Point returns 22
“We’ve got so many guys that we lean on but having Grauer healthy is really going to help us,” Brooks commented. “Having him healthy is going to add a whole new dimension to our team up front. Being a captain as a junior, Dixon brings so much to our team that people just don’t see.”
letterwinners and its top-nine scorers from last season’s squad, including four 2014 First Team All-WIAC selections. Reigning WIAC Player of the Year and 2014 CCM First Team All-American Garrett Ladd headlines the returners after tallying 42 points last season, tied for fourth-most in the country. Kyle Brodie, who led conference defensemen in scoring with 25 points last season, joined Ladd as a 2014 CCM First Team AllAmerican. Goaltender Brandon Jaeger and defenseman Kevin Gibson also were First Team All-WIAC choices and Jaeger’s 20 wins last season were the most by a UWSP goalie since 1999-2000. Returning players accounted for 119
The Pointers have also added six newcomers to the pool of returners, as transfers Cody Von Rueden, Skyler Smutek and Logan Lemirande join freshmen Ryan Scherer, Zach Badalamenti and Max Milosek on the UWSP roster. Von Rueden and Smutek come from Division I programs in the University of Illinois and UCONN, respectively, while Lemirande comes from Lawrence University. While having a large group of returners can make the recruiting process challenging, coach Brooks feels that the group of six newcomers will make a valuable contribution to the team this season. “They’re going to compete and push everybody to be better,” he commented about the newcomers. “Everybody that is here can play, so having an environment
“We play a lot of traditionally very strong, nationally-ranked teams,” Brooks said. “We will probably have one of, if not the most difficult schedules in Division III college hockey. But we need to play the best teams in order to mature as a team and to give us an opportunity to play in that national championship game.” With a highly-talented and experienced team, Brooks remains focused on taking the small steps that are necessary to achieve success like that of last season.
and a culture where guys push each other to maximize their 100 percent is invaluable as a coach and that’s what we have right now.” Despite being ranked No. 2 in the country in the D3hockey.com and USCHO.com preseason polls and being the preseason pick to win the WIAC, a challenging schedule stands between UW-Stevens Point and getting to where it wants to be at the end of the season. The Pointers
have non-conference road games against consensus No. 1-ranked and defending national champion St. Norbert, No. 5-ranked St. Thomas, a team UWSP beat in the NCAA Tournament last season, and No. 12-ranked Gustavus Adolphus. UWSP also has a pair of games against No. 6-ranked Adrian prior to beginning WIAC play, where the Pointers will play No. 10/11-ranked UW-Eau Claire and UW-River Falls, which narrowly missed out on a preseason ranking.
“I’m going to focus on making sure that we do stay in the present and that we are prepared to play to our potential every night,” he said. “I want to make sure that we are ready to dictate hockey games and make teams uncomfortable with the edge we play with, our team speed, how disciplined we are and how well prepared we are. We want other teams to know that when we walk in the building that they know exactly what they’re going to get.”
Chris brooks Head Coach Fourth Season In three seasons at UW-Stevens Point, Chris Brooks has led the Pointers to a 51-28-7 (.634) overall record, while playing in one of the most competitive conferences in the country. In 2013-14, Brooks led UWStevens Point to a national runnerup finish in its first appearance in the NCAA Division III postseason in 16 years. The berth in the Frozen Four was the first for the Pointers since 1998. The Pointers recorded a 22-6-2 record and the 22 wins were the most by a UWSP team since 1999-2000. Brooks was also named a finalist for the Edward Jeremiah Award, given to the Division III Coach of the Year in 2013-14. The Pointers finished the season ranked second in the country and were ranked in both the USCHO.com and D3hockey. com the entire season and were in the top five of both polls from Dec. 2. on. UW-Stevens Point was one of three teams to finish in the top 10 in the nation in both team offense (third) and team defense (seventh). In his three years at UW-Stevens Point, Brooks has coached three All-Americans (Garrett Ladd2014, Kyle Brodie- 2014 and Kyle Heck- 2012). He has also coached 19 All-WIAC players, including the conference’s first player of the year (Ladd- 2014), and an Elite 89 Award winner in Brandon Jaeger (2014). In Brooks’ first season as head coach, he led the Pointers to the Peters Cup Championship Game for the first time in over 10 years. In his three seasons as coach at
the professional level, he led the team to an 87-86 overall record and playoff appearances in two of his three seasons. In his first season (2008-09), he led the team to a franchise-record 35 wins and its first playoff series victory. The team was also named the CHL’s Franchise of the Year under Brooks’ direction. That same year, Brooks was the runner-up for the league’s Coach of the Year award. Prior to his time at Rio Grande Valley, the Stratford, Ontario, native spent nine years at Western Michigan University, six as an assistant coach and his last three as the associate head coach. His roles at WMU included coordinating the Broncos’ recruiting efforts, preparing scouting reports, evaluating game video, and organizing the Bronco Summer Hockey Schools. He also managed the practice plan and team travel. In addition, Brooks served as an evaluator for USA Hockey at Michigan Select Festivals in 1999. Brooks began his career as an assistant coach at Western and was promoted to associate head coach in 2006. WMU’s recruiting classes from 2002-08 produced eight NHL draft picks. In addition to those players, many others went on to sign free agent deals with NHL and minor league clubs. As a player, Brooks lettered four seasons as a player at WMU (1992-96) and finished as the eighth-leading scorer in school history, compiling 57 goals and 127 assists for 184 points. A playmaker with excellent on-ice vision, Brooks led WMU in assists
