Season Preview

Under first-year head coach Dawn Crow, the UW-Stevens Point women’s soccer team targets a move up the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) standings in 2015. Crow has been happy with the process of getting to know the players and with how the players have transitioned to her style. “Honestly it’s been a pretty seamless transition,” she said. “The girls have really shown a good level of commitment. We remind them that it is about competing and making it hard for each other and they have to make it hard on us to decide who is playing. I think that they’re making great strides on that and we’re getting better each practice.” Last season, UW-Stevens Point finished 7-10-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the WIAC and Crow hopes that a more offensive mindset will help the Pointers move up the standings. “I’m hoping we’ll be a more offensive team and we’re looking to be more possession-based,” Crow said of her vision for the team. “We are harping on each player to realize that they need to value the ball. You work so hard to get it, so let’s try to keep it.”

The emphasis on developing a more potent offense is helped by 15 returning letterwinners, including the team’s top-three scorers in Jillian Ross, Sarah Meylor and Emily Dietrich. Of the 30 goals UW-Stevens Point scored last year, 25 were scored by returners. “The two upperclassmen in camp that have impressed me the most have been Emily Dietrich and Kelsey Blob,” Crow said of the returners. “Both of them have taken it upon themselves to be leaders both vocally and through their actions. They’ve really rallied the troops and have their finger on the pulse of the team.” The 2015 team also adds 10 freshmen to the mix of veteran players and Crow thinks the freshman class will make an impact this fall. “From an incoming class standpoint, I think Lexi (Ahrens) has been a huge surprise along with Holly (Krey),” Crow commented. “I think we could end up starting as many as four freshmen and possibly more. Once they get used to the difference in speed of play, I think they’ll be able to withstand pressure, which is something we’ve worked at.” Crow’s ultimate goal for 2015 is to make the conference tournament and she believes she has the team to do so. “I think there’s enough fire that it could be done but, in this conference, nobody is going to give you their spot’” she said. “I think we have a group that can get us back there and surprise some teams. How much they clue into the finer points of the game will be the biggest thing that dictates how well we will do this fall.” UW-Stevens Point held 11 of its 18 opponents to one goal or less last season and Crow believes the back four will be a strength this season.

“I absolutely love our back four of Lexi (Ahrens), Holly (Krey), Kelsey (Blob) and Kara (Herr),” she said. “It looks like they’ve worked together forever. Kara also came in fit and can run all day. Lexi and Kara both want to get up the sideline and provide us some more width. They’ve done a phenomenal job.” In her first season, Crow is focused on daily improvement leading up to the season opener at St. Thomas on Tuesday, Sept. 1. “Our big thing is we want to improve every day,” Crow said. “The more they buy into the competition of practice and what we are getting out of it, the better. Our goal is to make practice hard so the game slows down and gets easier. The girls are very hungry and want to prove people wrong.” Crow hopes that the 2015 season is the start of rebuilding the reputation of UWSP women’s soccer. “We are looking to change the mentality of the program again,” she said. “We want to make UWSP relevant in the world of women’s soccer and I think it can be done.”

dawn crow Head Coach first Season Dawn Crow, a four-time national champion at Division I powerhouse North Carolina and former U.S. National Team player, has been named the third head women’s soccer coach at UW-Stevens Point. Crow will also assume administrative responsibilities for UWSP athletics, providing assistance with NCAA compliance, eligibility and academic services for Pointers student-athletes. Crow brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience at the Division I level to the Pointers’ program, one that has 14 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) championships and 15 NCAA Tournament appearances to its credit in the last 23 seasons. Crow comes to UW-Stevens Point after being the head girls’ soccer coach at Plano East Senior High School, one of the largest high schools in the country, in Plano, Texas from 2007-13. There, she was a two-time District 9-5A Coach of the Year and was the runnerup for the District 8-5A Coach of the Year in 2012. Crow’s 2008 team was the program’s first-ever state finalist and 30 student-athletes she coached at Plano East went on to play at NCAA Division I programs. Her teams also earned the NSCAA Team GPA Award six times. Prior to her time at Plano East, Crow spent seven seasons at the Division I level as either the head coach or an assistant. After starting as a volunteer assistant at Virginia Commonwealth (1996) and UNC-Wilmington (1997), she spent three seasons in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) as an

assistant at Mississippi State (1998) and Alabama (1999-2000). From 2001-02, Crow was the head coach at Duquesne and she went on to serve as an assistant at Fairfield (2002-2003). In addition to her collegiate coaching experience, Crow was a youth coach for FC Dallas of Major League Soccer (MLS) from 2005-14. In that role, she was the runner-up for the 2009 FC Dallas Club Coach of the Year and was recently a nominee for the Double Goal Coach Award from the Positive Coaching Alliance in 2014. She helped the FC Dallas Red 93 team move up three groups in the classic league and spent the last four seasons coaching the FC Dallas White 98 and FC Dallas 98 Premier squads.

aving won 14 conference championships in the past 22 years and made NCAA Division III tournament appearances 12 of the last 18 seasons, the list of accomplishments by the UW-Stevens Point women’s soccer team is astonishing. Here’s a look at the team’s impressive history: * The Pointers now have an 191-74-19 record over their last 284 matches, a winning percentage of .706.

Consecutive Winning Seasons Yrs Team From To 32 Ithaca (N.Y.) 1982 present 31 Rochester (N.Y.) 1982 2012 30 William Smith (N.Y.) 1984 present 24 Emory (Ga.) 1989 present 24 Macalester (Minn.) 1989 present 23 UW-Stevens Point 1988 2012 20 Mary Washington (Va.) 1986 2005

* The Pointers have won 14 of the 23 all-time WIAC championships and own an amazing conference regular season record of 141-21-7. They had the longest conference winning streak in NCAA history from 1997-2003 at 70 matches (including tournaments) and have outscored their WIAC opponents 810-103 all-time. * UW-Stevens Point has won 14 of the 23 all-time Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournaments. The Pointers are 45-2 all-time in tournament play and have outscored opponents 176-24. * The Pointers have had 10 of the 17 17-win seasons recorded all-time by WIAC teams. * UW-Stevens Point had a 378-123-32 all-time record from 1988-2012 and the 2012 season was its 24th consecutive winning season, which was the fourth longest current streak in Division III at the time. Only Rochester (N.Y.), Ithaca (N.Y.) and William Smith (N.Y.) have more consecutive winning seasons and all of them had their streaks begin before UW-Stevens Point added women’s soccer in 1987. * UW-Stevens Point has a 16-14-2 all-time NCAA tournament record in 15 tournament appearances over the past 21 years. Until 2005, UW-Stevens Point was the only WIAC school ever to play an NCAA postseason contest. * UW-Stevens Point’s eight NCAA Division III tournament appearances from 1997-2004 was the secondlongest streak in the country. Only the College of New Jersey had more with 14 straight.
