Season Preview

Head coach Ann Ninnemann begins her 12th season at the helm of the UW-Stevens women’s hockey program and has a solid base of returners going into the 2017-18 season. She returns all three goaltenders and five defenders, including All-WIAC selections up-and-down the ice.

Cara Lemirande returns up front as the go-to goal scorer. The junior has been a first-team All-WIAC pick in each season with UWSP. Last season, Lemirande led the Pointers with 17 goals, 26 points, six power-play goals, 105 shots and was a team-best +10.

UWSP top stopper Sydney Conley returns for her junior season after earning all-conference honors in each of her first two seasons. Last season, Conley posted a .923 save percentage with three shutouts in 19 games in net. Goaltenders Lisa Fowle and Marit Larson are also back with the team after each saw action and posted solid number last year. Larson went 4-1 with a 1.52 goals against average and Fowle picked up a win. Returning blue liner Ellie Punnett is back for her senior season after back-to-back All-WIAC honors. Last season, Punnett posted four goals and tallied 17 assists. Four other defensemen return with collegiate experience under their belt. Juniors Allison Karrmann and Lauren Smith along with sophomores Alex Grubbs and Maddie Monroe give UWSP a strong, experienced defense. Grubbs and Smith scored five goals apiece a year ago with Karrmann and Monroe also adding points. “Every team that has been successful for us has started from the defensemen out and goaltending out,” said Ninnemann.

UWSP boasts a trio of senior forwards as well. Ali Biagini was second on the team with 10 goals and 103 shots and was an all-conference selection as a freshman. Fellow seniors Lexi Englund and Maddie Schlossmacher combined for eight goals and 10 assists a season ago. Juniors Logan Harper and Mackenzie Kratch along with sophomore Emma Paravola combined for 28 points and provide experienced depth. Eight new faces appear on the bench that will impact the team this season. Lilly Johnson will join the defense and the Pointers add seven as forwards. These additions give the Pointers five even lines for practice, which will create competition that Ninnemann hopes will make the best players step up. The 2016-17 season saw the Pointers lead the country in power plays. UWSP loses just one piece off that unit in Meredith Ingbretson. Ninnemann believes it’s going to be a team effort again this year and working as a unit of five will be key.

“It’s a pretty impressive feat to go over 30% on the power play,” continued Ninnemann. “We lost a key part in Meredith but we have players with experience that can fill those shoes,” said Ninnemann. UWSP starts the season with three home games and Ninneman says it is important to help the new players get comfortable. “Especially with so many new players, it’s very important and often comforting to start off at home so they know what to expect at home compared to on the road,” said Ninnemann. The conference preseason poll released last week and the Pointers are picked where they left off last season in third place. “Our conference is very impressive, one of the toughest with only four teams, it makes in unique to the conference. I don’t forsee us finishing in third place and our new people will help bring us where we want to go this year,” said Ninnemann.

ann ninnemann Head Coach 12th Season Ninnemann is in her 12th season as head coach of the UW-Stevens Point women’s hockey team in 2017-18. In her tenure the Pointers have experienced several successful seasons including a national third-place finish in 200607.

teams posted a 70-42-17 mark in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) and have gone 17-11-5 in the highly-competitive WIAC over the last two seasons.

National success is nothing new for Ninnemann, who experienced plenty as both a player and assistant coach. In fact, she is one of the only people ever to both play and coach in a Division III Frozen Four. She also was an assistant coach in the Frozen Four and became just the third female head coach ever to lead a team to the national semifinals.

Ninnemann was UW-Stevens Point’s first All-American player in 2001-02 and captained the Pointers for three straight seasons from 2002-05. She totaled 55 goals and a school-record 69 assists for 124 points, ranking second in school history for goals and points. Ninnemann was named to the all-tournament team in 2004 when she led the Pointers to a national runner-up finish. She also assisted former UW-Stevens Point head coach and current North Dakota head coach Brian Idalski for one season with the Pointers in 2005-06, resulting in a third place national finish.

Under Ninnemann’s direction the Pointers have posted a 176-9732 overall record (.630) and her .630 winning percentage ranks ninth among active NCAA Division III coaches and 19th amongst coaches at all three divisions. Her

The Pointers earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament in 2013-14.
