Season Preview

As UW-Stevens Point women’s basketball head coach Shirley Egner enters her 29th season at the helm of the program, she is faced with another first in her career. The Pointers have seven new faces among the 13-player roster, the most in her tenure. UWSP lost four players to graduation and three other key contributors from last year’s team. “This is the first time ever that I have had more newcomers than returners,” stated Egner. “It’s fun. It’s a challenge, but we are going to figure it out. We are young, we have things to learn, we’ve got great energy and we are moving in the right direction.” The Pointers bring back a trio of seniors to the 2017-18 season. Taylor Barrett returns after an All-WIAC campaign a season ago. Her interior presence will be key for the success of both the Pointers’ offense and defense. She started all 25 games that she played in while averaging 8.6 points per game and swatting a team-high 46 blocks on the defensive end. “We need Taylor to stay healthy and be able to play through her,” said Egner. “Taylor is an important piece, but not the only piece.” Fellow seniors Mickey Roland and Lexi Roland will also play pivotal roles for the Pointers this season. Both averaged 5.7 points per game last season. Mickey started 15 games and was second on the team with 46 assists and 146

rebounds. She led UWSP with 56 offensive boards. Lexi started 11 games and led the Pointers with a .361 threepoint shooting percentage. “What we need from our seniors is consistent play and really good decision making,” continued Egner. “We have so many new players, we ask that they bring that effort every day and then just make solid decisions while out there on the court.” Juniors Caitlin Broberg and Olivia Pawlak have developed into solid role players and will provide valuable experience with the addition of so many new players. Pawlak has the size to compete down low, but continued improvements on the defensive end will correlate to her minutes on the floor. Broberg is a spark and excellent role player that helps the rest of the players on the team develop to reach their potential. Carly Cerrato returns for her second season as a Pointer. This season, she will be looked upon to contribute on the offensive end after the loss of several key offensive players from last year’s team. But filling up the bucket will not be her only role as Egner says her contributions on the defensive end will be just as important in 2017-18. Freshman Brooke Geier headlines a plethora of newcomers.

The all-state star from Kewaunee, Wis., is penciled in as UWSP’s starting point guard. Her development and ability to transition to the collegiate game will be crucial in the team’s early success. Fellow freshmen Bailee Collins, Taylor Greenheck, Ashley Leiterman, Erin Moran and Kellan Schmidt are finding out that the competition at the collegiate level is bigger, stronger, faster than at the high school level. They are progressing and learning and Egner says it is a process. “Our new players are doing a fantastic job thus far,” stated Egner. “Until we get that game experience under their belt and that we can’t take possessions off offensively, and more importantly, defensively, it is a process. They have coachability, attention to detail and they will help us, it’s just going to take time to adjust to what this level, especially in the WIAC, is like.” Transfer Ellie Kummer has a season of college action under her belt. She played for Cardinal Stritch two seasons ago, so her return to the court this year could be tempered by a bit of rust from not playing for a year. UWSP has scheduled a tough slate for the upcoming season. The level of competition, including top teams in the

CCIW and IIAC will help groom the team for the rigors of conference play. “There are no gimmies when it comes to the WIAC,” Egner said. “I am hoping we can learn from every game and move forward in the right direction so that we are ready to go when we get to conference play on Jan. 3 at River Falls.”

Shirley Egner Head Coach 29th Season Shirley Egner is in her 29th season as head coach of the UW-Stevens Point women’s basketball team and is the all-time winningest coach in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history. Egner has compiled a 526-229 (.697) overall record through 28 seasons with the Pointers. Over the last 17 seasons, Coach Egner has guided the Pointers to an average of nearly 23 wins per season and the team’s 377-110 record over that span is the best mark of any WIAC team.

UW-Stevens Point won back-toback WIAC titles in 2003-04 and 2004-05. In 2003-04, the Pointers also captured their first-ever WIAC tournament crown and Egner was named the conference’s Coach of the Year. In 2007-08, the Pointers finished third in the WIAC regular season standings, but became the first non-No. 1 seed ever to win the WIAC tournament crown with wins at Whitewater and at Eau Claire, as Egner was again named Coach of the Year.

On November 16, 2014, Egner earned the 600th win of her coaching career as the Pointers defeated Martin Luther.

Egner came to UW-Stevens Point from Nicholls State University in Thibodeaux, La., where she served as a graduate assistant.

Egner is a four-time WIAC Coach of the Year honoree, earning the award in 2003-04, 2007-08, 200809 and 2010-2011. In 2010, Egner was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Egner was also named the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division III Women’s Coach of the Year 2010, 2011 and 2012.

A native of McFarland, Wis., and a 1980 graduate of UW-La Crosse, she began her coaching career as head girls’ basketball coach at Shiocton (Wis.) High School. After a one-year stint as the girls’ freshman coach at Monona Grove (Wis.) High School, she became head girls’ coach at Waunakee (Wis.) High School, where she led the Warriors to a five-year record of 115-40, including conference titles in 1985, 1986 and 1987 and state tournament appearances in 1986 and 1987.

In 2012-13, the Pointers posted a 24-6 record and won the WIAC Conference Tournament for the fifth consecutive season. Egner led the Pointers to the 2001-02 NCAA Division III title with a 67-65 win over St. Lawrence (N.Y.). As National Champions, the Pointers finished with a 30-3 record and became the eighth team in NCAA Division III history to win 30 games in a season. Along the way to the championship, Egner guided the Pointers to a 66-60 victory over four-time defending Division III champion Washington (Mo.), snapping the Bears’ 70-game home winning streak.

Following the 1986-87 season, she was named the WBCA District Five Coach of the Year and was chosen to coach the Class B South Team in the WBCA All-Star Game in Madison. Egner, who was the chair of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball committee from 2006-08, is the senior women’s administrator for UW-Stevens Point Athletics.
