Inspiration for your success
Najeeba Wazefadost
Have you ever imagined yourself as the Executive Director of a major charity foundation making a real difference in the world? Perhaps you have dreamt of winning the Archibald Prize or Walkley Award or becoming the chief innovation officer in a global advertising firm? UWS graduates have achieved this success. As you read each success story imagine yourself in their shoes. Think about your own career possibilities and all you could achieve with your UWS degree of success.
Najeeba Wazefadost Amnesty International Ambassador 2011 Young Woman of the West award winner Bachelor of Medical Science Before she came to Australia, Najeeba Wazefadost wasn’t able to access education. ‘I came from a country that was all in dark, where I did not have one single good memory of childhood,’ she says. ‘I came to Australia with a hope that I was going to start a new life with peace, security and safety. Then when I was placed in a detention centre, I started to get a very negative image of Australians, and began judging everyone the same.’ Going to school, and particularly university, changed those perceptions, as she found many different people from a variety of cultures. ‘Spending time at UWS, I could see the sharing of different cultures between people, the sharing of experiences and stories regardless of race, country, colour, religion – everybody was giving each other a chance to learn. This is what I admire about UWS, this is what I love about UWS, because you can see people getting along with each other,’ she says. Najeeba completed her UWS Medical Science degree in three years and now has her sights set on becoming a doctor.

Dr Genevieve Nelson
Dr Genevieve Nelson Executive Director Kokoda Track Foundation
Dr Genevieve Nelson, KOKODA TRACK FOUNDATION
Bachelor of Psychology (Honours); Doctorate of Philosophy (Educational and Cross-Cultural Psychology) For Dr Genevieve Nelson studying at UWS provided the opportunities to forge an incredible career and life. ‘My studies at UWS provided me with an extremely strong platform for the development of my career. Without the first opportunity to walk the Kokoda Track through a UWS scholarship, I would not be in the position I am in today. ‘I completed my PhD within three years and was studying “what makes students learn” in village, rural, and urban Papua New Guinea. Through this experience I was invited onto the board of a not-forprofit organisation, the Kokoda Track Foundation. In 2009, I was appointed the executive director of the Foundation,’ she says. ‘UWS was an excellent place to study psychology. I was fortunate enough to experience the exceptional teaching and instruction from both sides – first as a student and second as a tutor. I witnessed firsthand the exceptional knowledge and experience that many of the lecturers and tutors have in their respective fields as well as the care and commitment they give to their students,’ says Genevieve.
Mark Renshaw
MARK RENSHAW Chief Innovation Officer Leo Burnett Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) As chief innovation officer of global advertising firm Leo Burnett, UWS graduate Mark Renshaw helps some of the biggest brands in the world to shake up their communications and marketing strategy. Mark’s career has seen him freelancing for big name advertising agencies while still at university, co-founding an interactive production company as the internet gained momentum, and starting Leo Burnett/Arc’s interactive division in Sydney. He then broadened his horizons with a regional role based in Singapore, before making the move to the US. One of the secrets to his success has been never really fitting into the traditional ‘creative’ or ‘strategy’ boxes in the advertising world – but instead, being able to bridge these two paths to drive fresh solutions and new thinking. Now based in Chicago, he travels across the US and globally to consult with Leo Burnett’s clients – including McDonald’s, Whirlpool, Samsung, and Kellogg’s. So what’s the key to innovation? ‘It’s knowing that creativity and innovation are two sides of the same coin. Being creative without using innovative ways to execute an idea is a missed opportunity.’

The MARCS Institute conducts research on auditory perception and cognition with a specific focus on speech, music, communicating and hearing. The Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) builds on the proven track record of the Centre for Cultural Research (CCR), carrying out research on the transformations in culture and society in the context of contemporary global change. The Institute for Infrastructure Engineering (IIE) is building on the work of the Civionics Research Centre (CRC), promoting the concept of ‘Smart Engineering’ which has developed through research into smart structures and smart materials.
Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today, but understanding just how ecosystems may be affected and how they will adapt to factors such as higher temperatures and increased periods of drought is critical to inform our response as a society.
Equipped with leading-edge research facilities, the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment is the ideal environment for investigation of issues such as the impact of climate change on carbon cycling and storage and biodiversity in terrestrial ecosystems, and how we can improve the management of plantation and natural ecosystems to support sustained carbon storage. Research at the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment is having a global impact. Institute researchers are nationally and internationally renowned for their work in ecology, biodiversity, and sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems; soil science and molecular microbial ecology; and plantanimal and plant-insect interactions. Plant biology research undertaken by the HIE was labelled ‘well above world standard’ in the Australian Research Council’s Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation in 2010. The UWS research achieved a score of ‘5’, the highest ranking possible. To learn more about the Institute and scholarship opportunities, visit www.uws.edu.au/hie

MARCS Institute
UWS is undertaking research to help us understand, interpret and meet the challenges of this changing social landscape.
The way we live is changing at an unprecedented speed. Economic instability, rapid developments in technology, and environmental crises are just some of the major global trends which will transform culture and society in the years to come.
Based at Parramatta Campus, the Institute champions inter-disciplinary, engaged and collaborative scholarship in the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. It takes a contemporary perspective to bring the opportunities of the digital age into all aspects of its research. The research themes of the Institute cover such dynamic areas as intercultural dialogue, transnational culture, institutional governance, economic and cultural globalisation, heritage, creative industries and city cultures. The high calibre of these researchers was recognised in the 2010 Excellence for Research in Australia (ERA) audit, with the University of Western Sydney awarded a ‘5’ rating – indicating ‘well above world standard’ – in the field of Cultural Studies. study at the University. You do not need to have a HSC or other qualifications to apply to study at UWS via the alternative entry program. The program includes two options: a two-day assessment workshop which allows you to demonstrate that you meet the minimum and essential criteria for the course , and the Badanami Tertiary Entry Program (BTEP), which consists of literacy preparation. Application forms can be downloaded from the UWS website www.uws.edu.au/ indigenous_edu/education/access
Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme The Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS) enables Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to receive individual or group tuition with qualified tutors in essay writing, study and research skills. Indigenous School Student Mentoring ProGRAM UWS students have the opportunity to mentor Indigenous high school students, helping their mentees to broaden their horizons, feel more confident, and achieve educational, personal and career goals. As well as mentoring sessions, mentees take part in academic and cultural enrichment workshops at UWS and the cohort at each school devises and implements a group project, with mentors facilitating that process. Mentors can be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders or non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and studying for any UWS degree. The program gives them the chance to develop their own personal and professional skills, as well as raising their awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and the educational barriers faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.
Former mentor and UWS graduate Amy Appleton said, ‘My involvement was a highlight of my year ... it was such a pleasure to interact with a terrific group of students and mentors. The training I received in mentoring combined with education surrounding Aboriginal culture has greatly enhanced the overall value of my degree.’ Revadhi Chelvarajah said, ‘With this initial experience, I am inspired to continue working with the Indigenous community both as a volunteer and in my professional career ... (it) instilled the belief I could make an impact on and help someone else as I could see the results of my mentoring first hand.’
ACHIEVE YOUR DREAMS WITH A UWS DEGREE OF SUCCESS
Other mentors have said, ‘Being a mentor in this program gives you a happy feeling that you are contributing to a positive change in your local community’, ‘Great program for developing negotiation and communication skills’, ‘It is very rewarding’ and ‘It was such a positive experience’.

Helping you PASS Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) is a student-centred learning program.
Peer Assisted Study Sessions
In PASS you will work with other students to understand the content of your unit/s and develop various study strategies to help you improve your academic performance. Through actively working together with other students, you will find that you are more engaged with the content and that your understanding deepens. You will also get to meet other people in your course. Each PASS group is run by a facilitator who has successfully studied the unit previously.
PASS is free and voluntary. PASS is open to all students studying in the unit who want to improve their understanding of course material and their academic performance. It is highly recommended for all students whether you are striving for a high distinction or a pass. Attendance at PASS does not replace tutorials or lectures. Rather, it supplements them through providing the opportunity to review, consolidate and clarify the course content. PASS sessions run for an hour each week throughout the semester. Multiple sessions are offered in larger units and students can attend as many sessions as they wish. If you have any further enquiries please email pass@uws.edu.au
