Vice-Chancellor’s Welcome At the University of Western Sydney, we believe that everyone with the ability and drive to succeed should have the opportunity to study at university. For over 20 years, UWS has been opening up access to higher education for the people of Greater Western Sydney, because we know that higher education has the power to transform lives. We see that determination to succeed every day within our 42,000-strong student population who come from a diverse range of social, economic and cultural backgrounds. Fifty per cent of our students are the first in their families to attend university. We see a real sense of achievement and pride on the faces of the thousands of graduates who celebrate this educational journey with their families and friends at graduation each year. Helping our students to realise their career goals and life ambitions is something we are passionate about, which is why we developed our $45 million Making the Difference scholarship program. UWS scholarships are a significant investment in the educational future of the people of our region – in addition to rewarding academic excellence and leadership, they provide opportunity to those who might otherwise not have the chance to study at university because of financial hardship or other circumstances. We have a wide range of scholarships available for prospective or current UWS students, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, students with disabilities, and mature-age students. Our scholarship program is greatly enhanced by the generosity of our many supporters across industry, local business and other organisations within our community. UWS gratefully acknowledges the significant contributions from our donors who provide financial support for students through scholarships funded by their gifts. Without this support, UWS would not be in the position to offer such a broad range of scholarships to the many worthy candidates each year we are proud to call our students. I encourage you to take the time to read about the scholarships available at the University of Western Sydney, and I look forward to welcoming you to our university.

Vice-Chancellor & President Professor Barney Glover

SCHOLARSHIPS

The range of scholarships offered by the University of Western Sydney (UWS) reflects a strong commitment to academic excellence and opportunity for the students of Greater Western Sydney. UWS also provides support to students who have diverse interests and skills, and who make an active contribution to the broader community. UWS is more than obtaining an education. We encourage our students to get involved and make a difference not only in their chosen professions and careers but also in the communities in which they live and beyond. Naturally, a portion of our scholarships acknowledge high-performing students. These scholarships are open to those undertaking any UWS undergraduate degree, with many offering industry links. However, if you are a mature-age student, or from an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, rural or disadvantaged background, you may qualify for one of the wide range of scholarships we have on offer. Industry-related scholarships offered by UWS are not always based solely on academic achievement. We offer several scholarships which are sponsored by businesses, councils and individuals from Greater Western Sydney. UWS works closely with these people, and with the community, to ensure these scholarships continue to meet the growing needs of our student population. Industry-sponsored

4 Scholarships Guide 2015

scholarships provide our students with financial support while they complete their studies, and also give them the opportunity to establish professional relationships and networks before they have finished studying. Our scholarship donors are important members of the University of Western Sydney community. The funding they provide for specific scholarships adds to the student experience and the community contribution that UWS is able to make. We thank our donors for their ongoing support and commitment to our students. There are numerous scholarships available, so take the time to do your research and make the most of the opportunities. The number and standard of applications for our scholarships is always very high. Unfortunately we cannot offer all applicants a scholarship. However, should you miss out on a first-year scholarship, continue to visit our website at: uws.edu.au/scholarships as many of the scholarships at UWS are available to continuing students. There may also be new scholarships that become available throughout the year that you will only find online.

If you believe scholarships are only for academically gifted students, or for students experiencing financial hardship, think again.

Pragya Goswami Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery Vice-Chancellor’s Leadership Scholarship recipient Pragya Goswami says her scholarship funding has already benefited her university experience. ‘So far I have purchased a new laptop, which has increased my productivity exponentially, a lab coat and a stethoscope for my clinical training, as well as many textbooks. ‘Studying Medicine at UWS is bringing me one step closer to my dream of becoming a doctor, and being in The Academy means I can also expand my relationships beyond my course and age group. ‘I am looking forward to learning medicine in the very hands-on UWS approach and meeting the diverse range of people from all different walks of life in Greater Western Sydney. ‘I love the relaxed environment at UWS and the healthy work ethic from my cohort.’

DEGREES OF SUCCESS

For those considering studying Medicine at UWS, Pragya says, ‘Take the UMAT seriously! Don’t stress about it, but acknowledge its importance! And breathe.’

Raymond Kumar Bachelor of Business and Commerce (Advanced Business Leadership)/Bachelor of Laws Vice-Chancellor’s Leadership Scholarship recipient ‘Having a scholarship to UWS allows me to focus on my studies and achieve the academic results and understanding necessary in my prospective fields of employment. Moreover, it assists me in the purchasing of books, stationery and other products needed throughout my degree. ‘So far being part of The Academy has meant I have been given the opportunity to meet extraordinary people, both peers and scholars alike. Also, it has allowed me to interact and work with students from different disciplines to achieve common goals. ‘I choose UWS because I agree with the University’s aim of providing accessible education to Greater Western Sydney. This improves the social and economic development in the region and gives back to the community. This kind of goal led me to believe that UWS would invest in my education and guide me to use this education to make a difference within society.’

Sam Dessen Bachelor of Communication Vice-Chancellor’s Leadership Scholarship recipient ‘My scholarship has assisted me in different ways. It has helped me gain entry to The Academy, which provides me with really interesting extension opportunities that further my learning. It also assisted me financially by allowing me to save up for equipment that will help me in film and music production. ‘To anyone considering university, my advice is to lose your preconceived ideas. Attend as many Open Days as you can at different universities. Talking to the staff about course options and content, scholarships and leadership opportunities really highlights the differences between institutions. Go with your gut, not what people tell you, you should do. I have found the lecturers in Humanities and Communication Arts passionate, industry-experienced and very engaging.’
