SCHOLARSHIPS 2018

The range of scholarships offered by Western Sydney University reflects a strong commitment to academic excellence and opportunity for the students of the University. Western also provides support to students who have diverse interests and skills, and who make an active contribution to the broader community.

There is more to Western Sydney University than an education. We encourage our students to get involved and make a difference not only in their chosen professions and careers but also in the communities in which they live and beyond. Naturally, a portion of our scholarships acknowledge high-performing students. These scholarships are open to those undertaking any undergraduate degree, with many offering industry links. However, if you are a mature-age student, from a rural or disadvantaged background, or identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you may qualify for one of the wide range of scholarships we have on offer. Industry-related scholarships are not always based solely on academic achievement. We offer several scholarships which are sponsored by businesses, councils and individuals from Western Sydney. Western Sydney University works closely with these people, and with the community, to ensure these scholarships continue to meet the growing needs of our student population. Industry-sponsored scholarships provide our students with financial support while they complete their studies, and also give them the opportunity to establish professional relationships and networks before they have finished studying.

SCHOLARSHIPS 2018

WELCOME TO WESTERN SYDNEY At Western Sydney University, we believe that everyone with the ability and drive to succeed should have the opportunity to study at university. For over 25 years, this University has been opening up access to higher education for the people of Western Sydney, because we know that higher education has the power to transform lives. We see that determination to succeed every day within our 44,000-strong student population, who come from a diverse range of social, economic and cultural backgrounds. Many of our students are the first in their families to attend university. We see a real sense of achievement and pride on the faces of the thousands of graduates who celebrate this educational journey with their families and friends at graduation each year. We are passionate about our students. Through our scholarship program, the University has committed a significant investment in the educational future of the people of our region. We are determined to provide not just financial support to our students but access to a range of programs unique to Western Sydney University, such as The Academy. This program offers high-achieving students, opportunities to gain the intellectual, emotional and practical skills needed in a world that is moving at an unprecedented rate. We also encourage our students to take advantage of opportunities abroad through our partnerships with international universities, with many of these exchanges being supported through scholarships. In addition to rewarding academic excellence and leadership, our scholarships provide opportunities to those who might otherwise not have the chance to study at university because of financial hardship or other circumstances. We have a wide range of scholarships available for prospective or current students, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, students with disabilities, and mature-age students.

SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION Scholarship applications require some preparation, so please ensure you familiarise yourself with the criteria and requirements and dedicate enough time to complete the application form and obtain all the supporting documents. Applicants must provide the required certified documentary evidence to support their application. Please note: ≥≥ Documents must be certified, and scanned and uploaded to your application ≥≥ The person certifying the documents must sight the originals, then authorise and sign one set of copies ≥≥ Further details on certifying supporting documentation can be found on the application form(s) ≥≥ Points to consider when preparing your application: ≥≥ For school leavers, ask someone such as your teacher, parent or careers advisor to read over your personal statement ≥≥ For mature-age applicants, ask someone such as a work colleague or friend to read over your personal statement ≥≥ Submit your applications by the due date – we will not accept late applications. We recommend that you keep an eye on our website at westernsydney.edu.au/ scholarships for further opportunities throughout the year.

Our scholarship program is greatly enhanced by the generosity of our many supporters across industry, local business and other organisations within our community. The University gratefully acknowledges the significant contributions from our donors who provide financial support for students through scholarships funded by their gifts. Without this support, the University would not be in the position to offer such a broad range of scholarships to its students. I encourage you to take the time to read about the scholarships available at the Western Sydney University, and I look forward to welcoming you to our University.
