The University of Western Sydney will offer a Bachelor of Applied Leadership and Critical Thinking in UWS Summer. This unique degree can be taken in combination with a cross-section of Bachelor degrees, including Communication and Design. The Bachelor of Applied Leadership and Critical Thinking combines a cross-section of courses with a focus on high-level critical thinking and innovative problem-solving practices. ADVERTISING MAJOR

Advertising is a dynamic, diverse, challenging and rewarding profession, encompassing all media from billboards to television, newspapers, websites and internet search engines. No matter how much the promotional vehicle changes, business and government will always need to get their advertising messages out. The Advertising major of the UWS Bachelor of Communication gives you a thorough grounding in the general principles of communication, as well as practical skills in advertising through internship placements and project-based learning. No matter what your advertising career aspirations, the Advertising major will give you the skills, knowledge and contacts you need to succeed. Offering an ideal balance of advertising theory and practice, the course focuses on real project-based outcomes and includes studies in digital and social media communications. You will gain valuable industry experience working with business and community organisations as part of your major studies (through an internship), and you will also be encouraged to pursue your own workplace-related projects and to produce a portfolio of final material. JOURNALISM MAJOR

The Journalism major of the University of Western Sydney’s Bachelor of Communication gives you the skills and experience you need to succeed in modern journalism. It integrates an understanding of how communication works with real-world experience in broadcast, print and online journalism. In this area of study, students develop broadcast, print and online journalism skills and expertise for newspaper, magazine, internet, radio, television and corporate and community media contexts, and explore news-team participation and management. MEDIA ARTS PRODUCTION MAJOR

Behind every award-winning program there’s a team of talented and dynamic production professionals. The production team brings together the pieces of the program puzzle, endowing it with meaning, flow and the power to move its audience. The Media Arts Production major of the UWS Bachelor of Communication gives you excellent production skills and knowledge, complete with practical, hands-on experience. In media arts production you develop a range of conceptual and production-oriented skills in digital media, including video, camera, sound, non-linear editing, visual effects, and production management. You will work across a range of media genres including short-form documentary drama and transmedia platforms and contexts. PUBLIC RELATIONS MAJOR

The Public Relations major of the UWS Bachelor of Communication gives you valuable skills and knowledge in public relations including consultancy, media relations, event management, issues and crisis management, as well as campaign development. The course focuses on the role of the public relations practitioner or advisor, and provides a theoretical framework of the industry. It also develops a strategic understanding of the public sphere from national and international viewpoints. The UWS Public Relations major is very practical. You will have numerous opportunities to consolidate your public relations knowledge with an internship and through project-based learning with employers and industry. You will also be encouraged to engage in your own workplace-related projects and produce a portfolio of final material. UWS Public Relations students have been successful in obtaining internships at Edelman, Australian Fashion Week, Saab Australia, Professional Public Relations, Hill and Knowlton, and Burson-Marsteller. EDWIN CONCUBIERTA Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication) ‘If you are interested in design, the UWS course offers everything you would want to cover and more. UWS has an abundant amount of resources for design work. There are plenty of Mac labs with all the latest Adobe software, professional photography studios, SLR cameras and video equipment that we can book, and a professional design studio. All these resources prepare us for the workforce. ‘UWS also ensures students have a level amount of fundamental design studies so you will cover various disciplines like photography, illustration, digital design, interactive media, plus important theory. The tutors and lecturers are professionals in their field. You know you are being taught and guided by people who are leaders in design. The final year is either an honours strand or professional strand, so you will be prepared to find a graduate position with a role that is second nature to you.’

The Bachelor of Design (Dean’s Scholars) delivers practical and theoretical skills and knowledge in graphic design. In years two and three, you will choose to specialise in the key areas of illustration, interactive media and/or photomedia. You may also study elective units in advertising, journalism, media arts production and public relations. The design program features our awardwinning in-house studio where you will gain experience in a professional team-based environment. In addition you will gain entry into The Academy and have the opportunity to research and create a major project working closely with expert supervisors. Your study will include individual and team-based project work, extensive use of advanced design software and applications, and access to our well-equipped creative studios.

An ATAR of at least 90.00 is required for entry into this course and you will be required to maintain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0 throughout the duration of your studies. Graduates are eligible for membership of the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) and the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA). PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE Throughout your degree you will engage with design briefs that enable you to develop an understanding of professional practice and how your developing areas of interest sit within the contemporary visual communication landscape. In fourth year, the program is linked to a unique in-house design studio where you will gain experience in a professional environment. You will also develop a major design project and industry-standard portfolio in your chosen design specialisation.


BACHELOR OF DESIGN (VISUAL COMMUNICATION)

Rapid changes brought about by globalisation and new developments in information and media technology are reshaping visual communication design, and raising exciting challenges and opportunities for those playing a creative role in this design area. The University of Western Sydney’s Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication) gives you fundamental skills and knowledge in the constantly changing area of visual communication. Underpinned by a foundation of graphic design, the program is delivered through a mix of creative and professional design approaches. Through a series of practice-based and theoretical units you will develop a range of creative, intellectual and technical skills and an understanding of the historical and cultural influences that continue to develop and inform the wide reaching discipline of visual communication. Throughout the course of the program you will engage with both individual and teambased projects, develop your conceptual thinking skills, gain experience and understanding of studio practice, and use an extensive range of digital technologies. CORE UNITS AND ELECTIVES To graduate with a Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication), you will be required to complete core units, two pairs of practice-based units, and four electives. The core units you may study in this degree include those that introduce you to key areas of practice within Visual Communication such as: web design, illustration, photomedia, typography, branding, packaging, publishing, design history and information design. The two practice-based ‘unit pairings’ that you choose will allow you to develop specialisations in areas such as illustration, photomedia, game design, app design, motion design and data visualisation. There are up to six electives within the Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication). You can select from other practice-based units or choose a sub-major in a variety of other discipline areas. For example you may choose to build on your disciplinary focus by choosing electives from other ‘unit pairings’, or you may decide to submajor in a complementary field such as advertising. A key strength of the program is its close relationship with the Bachelor of Communication degree, so you can also choose units such as Advertising Creative, Animation and Visual Effects, Screen and Sound Practices or Photo Journalism, giving an edge to your design experience. There are also opportunities for you to take further electives or sub-majors from other programs within the University, for example, Marketing Communications, Brand and Product Management or Indigenous Australian Studies, and Sustainability.

If you are interested in becoming an innovative, articulate musician who contributes to the music community and today’s culture, the Bachelor of Music (Dean’s Scholar) will provide you with the right opportunities. An advanced-level program, the Bachelor of Music (Dean’s Scholars) offers you the chance to significantly focus and develop your practical skills and theoretical knowledge beyond the scope of the Bachelor of Music degree. It offers high-level training in music, music performance, composition, sound technologies, music theory, musicology, arranging music and music analysis.

The program is offered in well-equipped studios, and in a lecture/workshop/ tutorial environment. Skills in music performance, composition and sound technologies are augmented by intellectual, theoretical and contextual studies. Direct entry into The Academy, in-depth research, and hands-on involvement from an active staff of music academics will support you as you build toward the production of a major project. An ATAR of at least 90.00 is required for entry into this course and you will be required to maintain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0 throughout the duration of your studies.

Music is a universal art form. It transcends geographical, national, political, cultural and racial boundaries, and can evoke the full spectrum of emotions in listeners. Music encourages introspection, inspires social awareness and unity, and has even been known to inform policy. The UWS Bachelor of Music takes an eclectic, modern and inclusive approach to music repertoire, performance and sound design. It gives you an opportunity to develop your professional and creative potential in making and appreciating a range of different types of music. You will focus on repertoire and media of the 20th and 21st centuries and also study music from earlier historical periods. You will have opportunities to use our recording studios, multimedia and MIDI laboratories, and digital audio/video suites.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS You will be selected on an interview/ audition basis in which personal aptitude, experience and educational qualifications are taken into consideration. Peer Assisted Study Sessions

Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) is a student-centred learning program. In PASS you will work with other students to understand the content of your unit/s and develop various study strategies to help you improve your academic performance. Through actively working together with other students, you will find that you are more engaged with the content and that your understanding deepens. You will also get to meet other people in your course. Each PASS group is run by a facilitator who has successfully studied the unit previously. PASS is free and voluntary. PASS is open to all students who want to improve their understanding of course material and their academic performance. It is highly recommended whether you are striving for a high distinction or a pass.
