INSPIRATION FOR YOUR SUCCESS

It doesn’t matter what your dream is, UWS will give you the knowledge, tools and experience needed to achieve them. Have you ever imagined yourself as the producer of a major Australian television series? Perhaps you have dreamt of being a Chief Executive Officer at the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia, or representing a major farming group in the United States or an international art critic living and working in exotic Bangkok? UWS graduates had these dreams and have achieved these incredible successes. As you read each success story, imagine yourself in their shoes. Think about your own career possibilities and all that you could achieve with your UWS degree of success. Remember, success is all about making your mark!

Jet Wilkinson Bachelor of Arts (Communication Studies) Photo courtesy of Channel Seven

RUNNING THE SHOWS As a kid, Jet Wilkinson loved watching ‘behind the scenes’ shows on TV. Now, as a Sydney-based director and producer, she is the one running the show behind the scenes. Since completing a Bachelor of Arts at UWS, majoring in Communications with a specialisation in media studies and film theory, she has worked consistently in the Australian industry for the past 18 years, directing Australian television drama series such as Wentworth, Wonderland, Packed to the Rafters, Mr and Mrs Murder, Crownies, City Homicide, All Saints, Home and Away, and Neighbours.

Now regarded as one of a new wave of young directors making their mark, Jet began her career as a production runner on Home and Away. ‘Having that degree certainly helps to get your foot into the door, and then you work your way upwards,’ she says. ‘You have to know what you want and work hard to get it.’ ‘I’m proud to have gone to UWS. It’s nice to feel part of a really fresh, evolving university,’ Jet says.

Jet has also spent time in the non-stop world of live TV, as senior producer for Foxtel’s Channel [V], where she spearheaded live-to-air shows for music events like the Big Day Out, Homebake, the ARIAs and WaveAid.

Justin Scarr Bachelor of Education CEO, Royal Life Saving Society

SAVING LIVES THROUGH PREVENTION Justin Scarr loves a challenge. Even after 15 years working with the Royal Life Saving Society Australia (RLSSA), first as Education Manager, then as Chief Operating Officer and more recently as the Chief Executive Officer, fighting the ongoing battle against drowning has lost none of its importance. ‘I get hooked on finding a solution to an issue and preventing drowning is a very easy issue to get hooked on, particularly as it relates to children,’ he says. It is no wonder that Justin has an affinity for helping children, considering he began his career as a primary school teacher.

16 University of Western Sydney uws.edu.au

After receiving a Diploma in Teaching in 1991 and then a Bachelor of Education in 1993 from the University of Western Sydney, he was selected by the Department of Education to join a group of graduates given job placements straight out of university. Snapping up the opportunity, Justin found himself in charge of 32 five-year-olds at Auburn West Primary School, some of who had barely spoken English before. Justin says his time at UWS was valuable to his career. ‘Many of the skills I refined during my time at UWS are used daily, such as the foundation skills of communication, planning and working with diversity. They all assist to achieve our organisational goals.

‘I’m very pleased to see how UWS has grown its reputation, particularly through the work of the research institutes and centres.’ Justin’s work with the Royal Life Saving Society has taken him all over Australia, including to remote Indigenous communities, as the organisation looks for ways to improve water safety.

Andrew West Bachelor of Arts (Applied Communication) Master of Arts (Creative Writing) International Art Critic Photo taken by Maximilian Westphal

AN INTERNATIONAL CAREER Bangkok-based art critic Andrew J. West never expected the University of Western Sydney to have such a huge impact on his life. But there’s no denying it has shaped his future. UWS was where his passion for Thai art was first ignited; connecting him to a country that would allow him to pursue his dream and build a successful career as a writer and artist. Andrew graduated from UWS in 1989, and over the following years made many trips to Thailand to visit his friends. He went back to UWS to do a Masters in Creative Writing, but job opportunities were opening up in Thailand. Since moving to Thailand in 2003, Andrew has had hundreds of pieces of work published, including in Bangkok Post, and he is now a contributing editor for Photo Art Magazine. He has also written three books including an art fiction novel and two non-fiction art books. In another exciting career development, Andrew turned from art critic to the critiqued at his first-ever exhibition, Three Worlds, which launched in January at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. Andrew loves the hectic hustle and bustle of Bangkok and these days calls Thailand his home. He encourages graduates to look outside of Australia if they are struggling to gain a foothold in their industry. ‘I would recommend to anyone who is graduating from UWS or any university that if you can’t use your skills in Australia or you’re not able to leverage yourself, go overseas. There are other places that need you.’ study@uws.edu.au Study at UWS 2015 17

David Inall Bachelor of Applied Science (Systems Agriculture) Senior Vice-President United Egg Producers USA

TAKING THE OPPORTUNITIES ‘I have enjoyed amazing career opportunities since graduating from the University of Western Sydney in 1990. My first job was as Policy Officer for the NSW Dairy Farmers’ Association. Following this I moved into national and international careers working for Livecorp, Meat & Livestock Australia, the Cattle Council of Australia and now United Egg Producers in Atlanta, Georgia.

18 University of Western Sydney uws.edu.au

My position at the Cattle Council was as the Chief Executive Officer, a position I was honoured to hold for almost eight years. I was in this role during the Indonesian live export crisis, which was a unique pressure test for all of us who had to face this unprecedented public outcry and political fallout. I am indeed fortunate to now be working in the US for the national farmer cooperative representing egg farmers across America.

Being an Australian working for and with US farmers and representing them in Washington DC is certainly a fascinating and unique experience. My time at UWS taught me lifelong skills around analysing and compartmentalising agricultural problems, a technique that has helped guide me to where I am today.’

TEACHING AND LEARNING SUCCESS

SUCCESS THROUGH ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Our lecturers are industry-trained professionals whose goal is to ensure you are career-ready when you complete your degree. They are also outstanding achievers in their own fields, maintaining an excellence in teaching that has been recognised within and beyond the University. In 2013, no less than nine UWS lecturers were recognised with prestigious Office of Learning and Teaching (OLT) Citations for their contributions to student learning. Our lecturers want to see you achieve your future success by giving you the benefit of their experience.

UWS ACADEMICS TOP THE NATION UWS academics took out the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award for Australian University Teacher of the Year in 2011 and 2012. INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED RESEARCH The University of Western Sydney nurtures a distinctive, high impact research culture. The quality of our research has resulted in 36 areas being listed as ‘at or above world standard’ in the Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) exercise. This includes five-star rankings for ‘evidence of outstanding performance well above world standard.’

Boasting four research institutes, UWS is attracting international, national and local interest. The Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment (HIE) is a multimillion dollar research institute dedicated to investigating the impact of climate change on native trees and forests. At the MARCS Institute, researchers examine, explain and enhance human-human and humanmachine communication through behavioural, neuroscience, and computational investigations. The Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) builds on the proven track record of the Centre for Cultural Research (CCR), carrying out research on the transformations in culture and society in the context of contemporary global change. The Institute for Infrastructure Engineering (IIE) is building on the work of the Civionics Research Centre (CRC), promoting the concept of ‘Smart Engineering’, which has developed through research into smart structures and smart materials.

HAWKESBURY INSTITUTE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT Growing more food and fibre for an expanding population is a major challenge for Australia as we face a changing climate and competition for land and water resources. The Hawkesbury Institute’s team of scientists are meeting this challenge by discovering how crops, grasslands and forests and the animals that live in them are responding to environmental and land use change. Equipped with leading-edge facilities, the Hawkesbury Institute is the ideal environment for researching our managed and natural ecosystems. For example, an ‘ecological time machine’ that uses a gigantic structure over an intact mature forest ecosystem is providing a look into a future, high CO2 world. This EucFACE experiment allows scientists to study the response to high CO2 of the entire forest ecosystem. Research at the Hawkesbury Institute is having a global impact and our scientists are renowned for their work

The Diploma is designed to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students entering university study and opens up pathways to further study in UWS undergraduate courses.

The practical component is undertaken in schools in students’ home communities and in Sydney. BACHELOR OF MEDICINE / BACHELOR OF SURGERY Students with an interest in completing the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery are strongly encouraged to apply. The School of Medicine recognises the large Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in Greater Western Sydney and the need for more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants should have successfully completed at least the equivalent of the NSW HSC. It is desirable, but not essential, to sit the UMAT (Undergraduate Medical Admissions Test). The most important criteria for admission will be assessment of the applicant’s desire to study medicine and their likelihood of succeeding in the course. These will be determined by the School of Medicine on a case-by-case basis. Please contact Cris Carriage, Indigenous Program Officer, School of Medicine, at c.carriage@uws.edu.au or call the Course Information Centre on 1300 897 669 for further information. The School of Medicine website is located at uws.edu.au/medicine with information for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants available at uws.edu.au/mbbsindigenous

PATHWAYS TO MENTORING UWS students have the opportunity to mentor Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students, helping their mentees to broaden their horizons, feel more confident, and achieve educational, personal and career goals. As well as mentoring sessions, mentees take part in academic and cultural enrichment workshops at UWS and the cohort at each school devises and implements a group project, with mentors facilitating that process. Mentors can be Indigenous or non-Indigenous, and studying for any UWS degree. The program gives them the chance to develop their own personal and professional skills, as well as raising their awareness of Indigenous culture and the educational barriers faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, or for further information, please contact: Pathways To Dreaming Project Officers: Josh Mason – Western Sydney Schools 0404 598 275, j.mason@uws.edu.au

INDIGENOUS GRADUATE ATTRIBUTE The Indigenous Graduate Attribute adds Indigenous-specific content to elements of study for existing courses at UWS. UWS graduates will gain an appreciation of the history and culture of Indigenous Australia, as well as knowledge and skills, which can be applied through productive work in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. These skills and knowledge will also be equally important across a wide range of career paths. UWS is the first university in the country to commit to incorporating formal study and assessment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australian histories and cultures in its courses, which is a major achievement for the University.
