The Academy is unique to the University of Western Sydney. It offers high-achieving students opportunities to gain the intellectual and practical skills needed in today’s ever-changing world. Focusing on ethical leadership within an interdisciplinary environment, The Academy provides extension-level academic development, community engaged service learning opportunities, international and national experiences and a range of professional and personal development workshops. If you enrol in any of the degrees listed, you will automatically be accepted into The Academy and given access to all the experiences and advantages it offers. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The Academy offers internships, community engaged service learning, volunteering opportunities, and industry links as well as real life experiences with employers. This will provide you with the skills and contacts for a wide range of careers. For specific career opportunities, see the relevant Areas of Study career guides on the following pages. APPLIED LEADERSHIP AND CRITICAL THINKING DEGREE The degree can only be taken in conjunction with existing Bachelor degrees listed in the Areas of Study in this brochure. It is not a stand-alone program. The degree is only offered at the Parramatta campus. Please check the location of the single degrees when applying. Any student who enrols in a UWS Advanced Degree will also qualify for admission to the new Bachelor of Applied Leadership and Critical Thinking as part of a double degree, if they wish to take up that option. Selected units within this degree will be available over the Summer teaching period in order to accelerate the program and shorten the standard timeframe. 4

ARTS An Arts degree has the potential to open career doors to the world. Your degree will be supported by academics that are internationally recognised. You will find yourself immersed in Cultural and Social Analysis, Interpreting and Translation, Psychology or International Studies, to name just a few major areas of study. Combine your studies to broaden your horizons into Law, Teaching, Science, ICT or Medicine. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Study in the humanities is designed to develop communication and personal skills, creativity and capacity for independent thought, adaptability to new situations, and problem-solving skills. ENGINEERING, INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY Enrol in an Engineering, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) or Information Systems degree at UWS and enjoy learning and working with one of the most advanced robotic assembly systems in the world unique to an Australian university. FORENSIC SCIENCE Analysing blood spatter, finding single strands of hair and locating hidden weapons, are just some of the tasks our students will be undertaking in the new forensic science facility on the Hawkesbury campus.

Crime scenes that will be created in the Joint Facility for Forensic Science Research and Training include a bedroom or living area of a residential home, an illegal drug lab, a garage with motor vehicles and an outdoor area where evidence (including pig carcasses) is buried.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES As a graduate, you may seek a career as a forensic scientist, scene of crime officer (SOCO), accident and private investigator, researcher and academic, or a drug analyst. Because of the wide skill base offered in this degree, you will also be able to work in analytical chemistry and microbiology laboratories, quality control and assurance, biochemistry and molecular biology, the chemical industry, education, and undertake scientific research. Students will engage in a range of criminalistic topics including forensic photography, hair and fibre comparison, footwear and tyre impression evidence, fingerprinting, blood spatter interpretation, tool mark examination, biological evidence, drug identification, DNA analysis, explosive residues, GSR (Gun Shot Residue), and buried evidence.

HEALTH AND SPORT SCIENCE UWS offers a broad range of innovative programs to prepare graduates for professional careers in health. The clinical health science programs cover Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Paramedicine, Podiatry and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Further programs target Health Promotion, Health Services Management, Therapeutic Recreation, Sport and Exercise Science and Health and Physical Education (HPE). As a graduate, you will have a solid grounding in evidence-based practice and lifelong learning skills which are highly regarded by the health industry. All programs include valuable work experience where you can build professional networks. The innovative National Institute of Complementary Medicine (NCIM) is located at the Campbelltown campus, as is the UniClinic, a therapeutic health practice where treatments are provided by students under the supervision of qualified clinicians. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Depending on which course you undertake, you may find a career in the public or private sectors, for example in hospitals, ambulance services, the defence force, rehabilitation centres, insurance companies, schools, large corporations, private practices and in government policy units. LAW UWS Law degrees are global in outlook and integrate academic content with professional skill development experiences such as mooting, legal drafting, court advocacy, client advising, alternative dispute resolution role plays (legal negotiation, mediation and arbitration) and clinical legal placements. Law programs are offered at the Campbelltown and Parramatta campuses. Both offer excellent facilities, including moot courts for practising advocacy skills, a comprehensive library and computerbased law research facilities. In 2016, you will have even more options to study law and combine your studies with another degree. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES In UWS Law programs, special emphasis is placed on professional legal skills. As a graduate, you may find employment in legal practice as a solicitor or barrister, roles in the banking and finance sector, accounting firms and management consultancies, corporate management, education and publishing, government departments and regulatory authorities, marketing, human resources and telecommunication industries.

MEDICINE As a graduate of the Medicine and Surgery degree, you’ll be more than just highly skilled; you’ll be ready for your internship and further specialist training. Based on an innovative curriculum that is tailored to the Greater Western Sydney context as well as providing opportunities to experience rural medical practice, the program combines problembased learning and intensive clinical practice with leading research. You will learn your skills using state-of-the-art equipment, and learning spaces, including a new technologically-enhanced anatomy laboratory, and clinical schools located at hospitals and communities in Greater Western Sydney and across NSW. Graduates are eligible for registration by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, and may be able to apply for registration in overseas countries. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Examples include medical practice (either general or specialist), medical administration, medical research and medical education. Most medical graduates undertake further postgraduate vocational training before starting independent practice in their chosen area. In NSW, internships are administered by the Health Education and Training Institute (HETI) and equivalent organisations in other states and territories. ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER COURSES BACHELOR OF COMMUNITY AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT This is a three-year undergraduate program available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Students develop the skills and knowledge for work in welfare and advocacy, community leadership, development and community sustainability. The course is offered at UWS Penrith campus in block mode supported by online learning. Students will have the opportunity to undertake relevant placements in the field. Note that students enrolled in the block mode Bachelor of Community and Social Development at Penrith campus can exit early from the degree with the Diploma of Community and Social Development. Students are required to attend three residential sessions on campus per semester, each lasting approximately one week, with a total of six weeks. Travel, accommodation and meal costs to attend workshops are funded for Abstudy approved students. DIPLOMA IN COMMUNITY AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT This is a one-year undergraduate qualification available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at the UWS Penrith campus. The Diploma provides students with initial skills and knowledge for working in community and welfare organisations as well as providing an introduction to Indigenous Australian studies. The Diploma is designed to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students entering university study and opens up pathways to further study in UWS undergraduate courses.

BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (PRIMARY) – ATSIE The Bachelor of Education (Primary) – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (formerly AREP) is a four-year undergraduate program. This degree gives you the skills and understandings to teach effectively across the Kindergarten to Year 6 curriculum range. It comprises a full suite of foundation, primary curriculum, and school-based subjects, including a range of professional experiences, as well as subjects that focus on extending your personal literacy and numeracy skills and cultural perspectives. The course is offered at the Bankstown campus in block mode. The practical component is undertaken in schools in students’ home communities and in Sydney. This block mode is designed to afford students the capacity to remain in their community to fulfil their family, community, career, cultural and social responsibilities. To study a block mode program requires students to attend four to six residential schools per year, each lasting approximately one to two weeks. Travel, accommodation and meal costs to attend workshops are funded by Abstudy approved students. BACHELOR OF MEDICINE/ BACHELOR OF SURGERY Students with an interest in being a doctor and helping others with medical care are strongly encouraged to apply to the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery. The School of Medicine recognises the large Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in Greater Western Sydney as well as across rural and regional areas and the need for more Aboriginal and

Torres Strait Islander doctors. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants should have successfully completed at least the equivalent of the NSW HSC. It is desirable, but not essential, to sit the UMAT (Undergraduate Medical Admissions Test). The most important criteria for admission will be assessment of the applicant’s desire to study medicine and their likelihood of succeeding in the course. These will be determined by the School of Medicine on a case-by-case basis. Students may also be eligible for ITAS tutorial assistance. The Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS) enables Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to receive individual or group tuition with qualified tutors. As a full-time student on campus at UWS, you should expect to spend 12–16 hours each week in lectures or tutorials between 8am and 9pm, Monday to Friday. Practical courses will require out of hours involvement and some courses require off-campus placements.

WHAT CAN I DO IF I DON’T GET THE ATAR I WANT? There are a number of alternate pathways available, for example UWSCollege, UniTrack and STAT. There are bonus points available through the UWS Advantage. You may qualify for Regional Bonus Points, and/or Subject Bonus Points up to a maximum of 10 Bonus Points. HOW LONG ARE THE TEACHING SESSIONS? Most degrees are taught in two sessions – the Autumn session from March to June and the Spring sessions from July to November. UWS also offers an optional Summer session from December to February, during which students can undertake additional units if they are available. WHAT IS UNIVERSITY LIKE?
