Social Media: A Guideline for Students

INTRODUCTION We know that social media is a big part of how you communicate, whether it is to find out about what is happening at uni, to talk to your uni friends and staff, or find out about important news. The University uses social media to create an open environment where information is shared and constructive conversations can occur. To ensure you stay safe and keep things friendly, the following advice may be useful.

Social Media: Get Involved

GET INVOLVED We encourage open conversations with our students on social media about all types of things to do with the University. We know that sometimes we won’t agree with each other, and that is fine. As long as those conversations remain relevant and civilised it can be a great way to communicate. While we enjoy engaging with students anytime, we particularly like to hear about your positive experiences at Western Sydney University. We want to see life at university through your eyes, so we invite students to share photos and videos with us on social media using #westernsydneyu and #unlimited.

Social Media: Protect Your Privacy

PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY When using social media, you should be aware of who you are sharing your personal information with. Depending on your privacy settings, it may not only be your friends who can see your profile information. This can include things such as where you live, your email address, birthday and other contact details. Make sure you share this information with people you choose. Only accept friend requests from people you know and check your privacy settings regularly. Some social media sites change their rules without notifying you, so remain vigilant!

Social Media: Keep It Friendly

KEEP IT FRIENDLY The same rules apply online as in everyday life. Being abusive, bullying or harassing others online is not acceptable and will be taken seriously by the University. Make sure you read the house rules of each social media site you post to so you know what is expected of you and don’t cross any boundaries.

Social Media: Protect Your Reputation

PROTECT YOUR REPUTATION What you say on social media isn’t always only shared with people you know or who follow you. It is now commonly known that employers are using social media to evaluate potential candidates. We keep track of what people say about the University on social media, and so does your potential future employer. Make sure that the photos and opinions you share is something you can defend. Sending embarrassing photos or stories about yourself or others to anonymous accounts to post on your behalf may also put you in a vulnerable position. Even though the general public won’t know who you are, the page administrator does. Can you trust someone you don’t know to uphold your privacy in future? We ask our students to refrain from posting information that is defamatory or discredits the University. While having your say is fine, overstepping the boundaries could be in breach of the University’s policies and could lead to academic misconduct proceedings in some cases. You are encouraged to read the University’s Policies and Guidelines for further information.

Social Media: Follow the Rules

FOLLOW THE RULES It is important that you are aware of the expectations the University has on students when using social media as well as your responsibilities as a part of the University community is important. We recommend you read the relevant University Policies and Guidelines to ensure you don’t end up regretting any of your actions.
