2008/2009
ANNUAL
REPORT
OUR MISSION To improve the lives of people and their families by mobilizing and uniting the caring power of our community.
HISTORY OF UNITED WAY United Way began 120 years ago in Denver, Colorado with a handful of community leaders working together to raise resources to help children and families and became known as the Community Chest. Over the years we have operated under a number of names and our expertise and focus has always been in human services. Your local United Way of Sarasota County was formed in 1947.
UNITED WAY’S UNIQUE ROLE Today we continue our work to advance the common good by focusing on Education, Income and Health. These are the building blocks for a good life—a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health. • We focus on just one thing, health and human services. • We give you an accountability level involving your own community leadership that monitors results; and brings other supporters to the kind of causes you believe in. • United Way is able to leverage your gift. For every dollar you give to United Way, we are able to leverage additional funding from other sources.

LETTER FROM CHAIR AND PRESIDENT This past year has been a tremendous challenge to our community, a challenge that has impacted the personal lives of thousands of families in our community. We’re extremely grateful to our partner agencies that have worked so hard to meet the increased demands, to our donors that rose to the occasion and continued or increased their support, and to our volunteer leaders who made the difficult decisions needed to change funding priorities to reflect the economy. We are very proud to have partners who insist on the highest level of quality in the work we do for our community. For hard-working families, that means sustaining food and shelter; for parents, it means finding quality child care; for the disabled, it’s about participating fully in life; and for those facing a crisis, our partners work year-round to protect people and help them regain control of their lives. Marc Lazarus Chairman of the Board 2008/2009
Alexander L. Young President and CEO
United Way’s focus on health and human service issues, our record of accountability, and our willingness to partner with organizations and individuals from all sectors of our community allow us to make the best use of the contributions of our citizen’s time, talents, and generous financial support. Those partnerships over the years have led to the creation of United Way 2-1-1, a region-wide service handling over 50,000 calls for help last year, to the ongoing work of Success By 6, our community's effort to ensure children are ready for school and life, and to other efforts like ‘Building Strong Families’, our program to prevent homelessness which has been adopted in seven other communities in Florida and Ohio. Our Board has adopted the Financial Stability PartnershipTM as a longterm effort to help hard-working people and their families achieve financial independence. Through efforts focused on increasing families’ income through programs like the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance service, participating in the creation of the Manatee-Sarasota Workforce Partnership, and a process designed to support financial education, we are moving forward to create a better quality of life for everyone in our region. Your compassion and generosity have made the accomplishments highlighted in this Annual report possible, and for that we say, “Thank you”!

INCOME.
IMPACT.
United Way of Sarasota County is passionate about offering hard-working individuals and families the opportunities to move toward financial independence!
The Financial Stability Partnership™, a new initiative of United Way, focuses on the goal of transforming the financial tightrope that many families face in Sarasota to solid ground where households can access financial education programs, find resources/services to manage their money, and save for the future and build assets. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program increases the number of residents applying for EITC (Earned Income Tax Credits) and CTC (Child Tax Credits) with free tax preparation sites. In the first year United Way operated 2 permanent tax preparation sites in Sarasota and Venice with mobile outreach to Englewood, Nokomis and North Port. 43 trained VITA volunteers helped clients receive $578,044 in total refunds. Building Strong Families through Crisis Prevention was initiated in 2003 by Tocqueville Society members, Al and Barbara Siemer. Families facing homelessness due to medical illness, employment loss or reduction, domestic violence etc. enroll with Jewish Family & Children’s Services to address the underlying causes of their problem. The main goals are to continue children’s education in their originating school while addressing the families’ immediate crisis and re-establishing housing stability.

LETTER FROM THE CAMPAIGN CHAIR
I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for your generous support this year. It was a tough road during this economic down turn, and all of you pulled together as a team making sure that everyone had an opportunity to advance the common good in our community. It has been my honor to chair this campaign, and working with all of you to make this community a better place is most rewarding. United Way of Sarasota County’s corporate and community donors are two of the most important pieces to our successful fund-raising campaigns. Through workplace, community campaigns, and in-kind donations the extreme generosity of each of these partners is displayed. This year’s campaign raised over $2,900,000. Thank you for your commitment and active involvement in United Way. Your support is greatly appreciated. Sincerely,

The Tocqueville Society recognizes local philanthropic leaders and volunteer champions who have devoted time, talent, and funds to create long-lasting changes by tackling our community’s most serious issues. Membership in Tocqueville Society is granted to individuals who contribute at least $10,000 annually to United Way. Our local Tocqueville Society was established in 1989 under the leadership of Alex and Betty Schoenbaum, and continues today through the leadership of our Tocqueville Growth Committee and the following extraordinary individuals whose collective gifts raised more than $640,000 for the hard-working families of Sarasota County. In addition to their annual gift, several of our Tocqueville members have also endowed their gifts to ensure their support in perpetuity.
Barbara and Al Siemer focus their philanthropy on education, prevention of homelessness, and the arts. In addition to their volunteer leadership with the United Ways of Central Ohio, and Sarasota, Barbara is also on the boards of the New Albany Foundation, Columbus Museum of Art, and Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota. In 2004 the Siemer’s initiated the Building Strong Families program in Sarasota, designed to reduce student mobility and enable families to stay in their homes. They are working with United Way to expand this program to additional communities in the states of Florida, Ohio, and eventually across the country.

Janet and Don* Hevey began giving in the early years through payroll deductions, and as they prospered their gifts to United Way grew. As loyal Tocqueville Society members, the couple’s passions include helping children, preventing homelessness, and supporting hard-working families. Janet made this very generous gift to United Way in memory of Don who passed away last year. The gift funded Women’s Initiative Childcare Crisis Scholarships, Building Strong Families program, and funded the launch of the Financial Stability Partnership™ program providing free tax preparation for low income families.
Virginia Toulmin is the former president of Central Pharmaceutical Co. (now Schwartz Pharma) in Seymour, Indiana. She has served as president and board member of several nonprofits in Dayton, Ohio, and Sarasota, Florida, and is currently president of the Sarasota Orchestra Board. Virginia believes United Way is the best way to give to local causes and feels it is a sound investment because United Way investigates every agency that it helps. She likes to give unrestricted gifts so it can be used where it is most needed.

UNITED WAY FOUNDATION An investment in the United Way Foundation provides an opportunity to benefit children and families in our community. Donors can focus their gifts on specific areas they feel passionately about and insure their support in perpetuity. The purpose of these gifts is to:
Major General Raymond E. Mason, Jr. and Margaret E. Mason recognize United Way as the best way to make an impact in Sarasota. Their special interests include assistance to disadvantaged children, families and individuals, and youth development activities.
• Create a reserve for capital, special initiatives or other expenditures not ordinarily covered by annual gifts • Supplement annual giving to sustain projects during challenging economic times • Accommodate wishes of donors who want to make a long-term impact for their special causes and meet their personal financial needs The following are some of the ways that local people have made their gifts: Gifts of Cash, Equities, and Real Estate. Charitable Gift Annuities, Remainder Trusts and Lead Trusts. Bequests from a Will or Trust, and naming United Way as beneficiary of retirement plans, life insurance, or annuities.
MARGARET A. SANDERS A Legacy of Giving 1910-2009
For more than 65 years, Margaret worked as an advertising designer, writer, air traffic controller, photographer and international yearbook representative. Since her retirement in 1994, she devoted much of her time to charitable causes, and she made the Foundation for United Way her primary charitable beneficiary. In 2001, Margaret established a scholarship foundation through the United Way Foundation of Sarasota County to serve the international schools in perpetuity. As Margaret said, “I give to the Foundation for United Way because it is a well established organization with a good reputation and it makes a difference to people from all walks of life – from the giver to the receiver.” We will miss Margaret who passed away June 5, 2009, but her legacy of giving will live on in the lives of many and on the Margaret A. Sanders, United Way building.”
