Historic Tacoma, the South Tacoma Business Association and the University of Washington Tacoma present a walking tour of the South Tacoma neighborhood.
South Tacoma is one of Tacoma's most intact historic commercial business districts. From the opening of the Northern Pacific Railway locomotive and car repair shops in 1890, the neighborhood boomed into the twentieth century.
This walking tour was conceived by UW Tacoma lecturer and Historic Tacoma board president Caroline Swope. The publication was developed from research compiled by students Shurvon Haynes, Scott Neff, Sean Panzer, Kirk Redal, Brian Rybolt, Darren Takagi and Brittney Thomas. Special thanks to Brian Kamens at the Northwest Room, Tacoma Public Library, and to Darlyne Reiter for research support.
