THE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY & MILGARD SCHOOL OF BUSINESS THE MASTER OF CYBERSECURITY AND LEADERSHIP (MCL) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON TACOMA develops leaders who can effectively identify and promote solutions that protect an organization’s cyber systems. Designed for professionals and military personnel with a technical background and a minimum of three year’s work experience, the MCL leverages the resources of Institute of Technology and the Milgard School of Business to enhance students’ technical and leadership skills for career advancement in the field of cybersecurity. THE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY is UW Tacoma’s home for computing-centered academic programs, faculty, research and curriculum. The Institute addresses the increasing demand for well-educated, highlyqualified technology professionals in the state of Washington. Strong and wide-ranging partnerships with local employers help students gain practical work experience and meet continually changing industry needs. THE MILGARD SCHOOL OF BUSINESS offers a world-class education that is tailored to the workforce in this region and beyond. Originally established in 1994, the Business Administration program was renamed the Milgard School of Business in 2003. Milgard’s graduate programs encourage managers to develop a strong mix of leadership, technological, financial, analytical, relational and communication skills needed to lead organizations facing an increasing pace of change. The school is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

THE MCL DEGREE / MCL serves as an educational foundation for invention, innovation and entrepreneurship. It is designed for professionals seeking a competitive advantage for advancement and leadership positions in cybersecurity operations in the private sector, the military or government agencies. The program hones students’ managerial skills and competencies essential to lead technology professionals and organizations in the 21st century. Ideal candidates for the program include IT managers, military personnel with an accredited bachelor’s degree and professionals with at least three years work experience who can demonstrate proficiency in computer network administration and architecture. The MCL is particularly well suited to military personnel, active and veteran, soldier and civilian.
CURRICULUM The Master of Cybersecurity and Leadership is a non-thesis, 40 credit-hour cohort based program that balances a technically-oriented curriculum focused on understanding the basic operations and functionality of cybersecurity systems and information assurance with a more behaviorally-oriented curriculum focused on the management of technical professionals and organizational leadership. Eight 5-credit courses will be offered over four quarters commencing in Autumn 2017. Instruction will be held twice a week, with a mix of evening and Saturday classes. MCL graduates leave with a practical understanding of operational cybersecurity, including the principles of data protection, network security and information assurance, as well as the skills to manage technical professionals and lead strategic change their organization.
PROGRAM LEARNING OBJECTIVES COMMUNICATION SKILLS / Our graduates are effective interdisciplinary communicators who can integrate the technical aspects of cybersecurity with the strategic and managerial concerns of their organization. RISK MANAGEMENT SKILLS / Our graduates are diagnostic problem-solvers who can evaluate the information security needs and design strong cybersecurity
capabilities in their organization. They can use risk assessment concepts and methodologies to determine proactive measures in protecting organizations from critical data exposure. LEADERSHIP AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS / Our graduates are changesavvy managers who can effectively coordinate activities and lead individuals and teams.
ONE-YEAR MCL PROGRAM OF STUDY / Each quarter, students will take two 5-credit courses. One course will be taught through the Institute of Technology and the other course will be taught by the Milgard School of Business. These courses set the foundation for students to complete a team-based capstone project with a local organization in the last quarter of the program. AUTUMN COURSES:
