MASTER OF
EDUCATION Offered by the School of Education
THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION THE MASTER OF EDUCATION (MEd) DEGREE is organized under the umbrella of the School of Education at UW Tacoma. Within that framework, prospective educators may earn a residency certificate. Prospective principals and program administrators may also earn a residency certificate. For practicing educators we offer a M.Ed. with study options including Curriculum and Instruction, Social and Emotional Learning, Student Academic and Social Success (SASS), Special Education and Teaching English Language Learners (TELL). We have a special advisory process to help educators become highly qualified, earning new endorsements. Programs vary in length, focus and requirements. Some are part-time and some are full-time. Upon acceptance, all students are assigned an advisor to find the most reasonable and efficient means of reaching their desired goal.

MEd K–8 TEACHER CERTIFICATION
WITH SPECIAL EDUCATION or ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS
The Master of Education Program with a focus on K-8 Teacher Education features an introduction to teaching in all areas of the elementary and middle school curriculum, preparation for non-curricular aspects of the teacher’s role, reflection on contemporary issues in education and frequent supervision. Mentor teachers and university faculty work together to provide students with a program that ensures integration of course content with hands-on experience. Candidates will begin their Autumn Quarter Clinical Practice the first day of public schools, or earlier to attend building orientations or professional development days. Please note you may need to start your Clinical Practice as early as mid to late August. Students earn certification in K-8 Elementary Education with a Special Education or English Language Learners (ELL) endorsement. Admitted students progress as a cohort community through five quarters of full-time (mostly day) study beginning in Summer Quarter. Upon completion of all certification requirements, students may be recommended to the state for a teaching certificate. The second year is a part-time evening course of study that is conducive to a working teacher’s
