UW Tacoma’s Business Administration program was established in 1994 and renamed the Milgard School of Business in 2003 in recognition of a generous endowment of $15 million from Gary E. Milgard, the Gary E. Milgard Family Foundation and James A. Milgard. The Milgards shared a vision of helping to build an outstanding business school at the University of Washington Tacoma. Their gift supports our quest for excellence in all that we do.

ACCOUNTING CAREER OPTIONS / Auditor Certified public accountant Cost/budget analyst Forensic accountant

Accounting focuses on recording and reporting financial transactions and students in this option develop the financial and quantitative skills necessary to succeed in today’s fast-paced business environment. Specific areas covered within the accounting option include:

Management accountant Tax specialist

Recording and reporting of financial data under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) Understanding tax law and its effect on business decisions Auditing financial statements using GAAP The importance of accounting information systems

Understanding the composition of consolidated financial statements

Gathering and using cost data for planning and control decisions

Elective courses provide extensive studies in corporate and nonprofit accounting, forensic accounting, and taxation. The Accounting option provides a pathway to a great career in accounting with the potential for you to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Milgard also offers a specialized Master of Accounting degree if you are looking to continue your accounting education and/or earn the additional credits required to sit for the CPA exam.

Finance – the indispensable discipline for the future. An understanding of finance and how it, together with time, can be made to work for you and your employer is the major goal of the finance option. Whether you are managing your own money or others’, whether you are running your own business or involved with the financial affairs of a corporation, a comprehensive understanding of finance together with the ability to apply it in your decision making is critical to your future wellbeing. Specific areas covered within the finance option include: Financial decision making and interest rates How corporations use financial tools to achieve their goals Financial securities such as bonds and stocks Risk and its relationship with return Portfolio management

Using your knowledge of finance to secure your own financial future

The structure of the Finance option allows you to prepare for the Level 1 exam of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program.

Want to get a degree in business, but have flexibility to mix and match courses from a variety of business disciplines? The General Business option is for you! Combining courses from management, marketing, economics, finance, and business data analytics you have flexibility in course selection allowing you to customize your skill set. The General Business option is designed for the student interested in a broad perspective that draws from multiple disciplines. Upon completing this option, you will be prepared to do anything from running your own business, to leading in a large organization where your expertise will provide support for cross-functional projects and teams. General Business graduates are prepared for employment opportunities in finance, marketing, public relations, sales, management, human resources and more.

How do you manage and be managed in the 21st century? The Management option enhances your ability to get work done with and through other people in a variety of workplaces. This option prepares you for entry-level management positions and management training programs, as well as administrative, planning, project team and coordinating roles. You will learn how to be a critical thinker, use the best available evidence to make your managerial decisions, and how to enact your decisions with ethical principles in mind. Specific areas covered within the management option include: Building effective teams

Human resource management tools such as recruiting, hiring, performance appraisal and reward systems Decision making within an organization Motivating people towards common goals

Interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate well with others from diverse backgrounds

Managing conflict, navigating difficult conversations and negotiating with others

DIRECT ADMISSION The Milgard School of Business Direct Admission program is an opportunity for exceptional freshman applicants to be admitted directly from high school into the business program at UW Tacoma.

FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN

Milgard Direct Admits qualify for special merit scholarships, receive personalized support from business advisors, and are able to engage with the Milgard Success Center throughout their whole four years at UW Tacoma.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Admission to the Milgard School of Business is capacity-constrained and there is a formal application process. Applicants are evaluated based on:

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE Completion of at least 60 college-level credits (minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA) Completion of an English composition course (minimum 2.0 grade) Completion of the business prerequisite courses (minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA* in these specific courses) Financial Accounting I Financial Accounting II Managerial Accounting Statistics

Macroeconomics Microeconomics Business Law

*A minimum 2.0 grade is required in each prerequisite course. Business prerequisites may not be taken P/F or S/NS. Applicants to the Accounting option must earn a minimum 2.5 in each accounting course and a cumulative 3.0 across all accounting courses.

At the time you apply, English composition, financial accounting I, microeconomics-or macroeconomics, and two additional business prerequisites from the above list must be completed with a grade on your transcript and ALL business prerequisites must be completed prior to the start of the quarter of admission.

RESULTS OF THE WRITING SKILLS ASSESSMENT (WSA)

The WSA is an in-person writing test required for admission to all UW business schools.

F-1 visa holders and select domestic students may submit official TOEFL or IELTS scores in lieu of taking the WSA. Please email business@uw.edu to confirm eligibility.
