Your Neighbourhood Summer Streeter

August. The height of summer, with hot, lazy days, cottages, backyard pools, barbeques, parks and lots of play. We hope you’re soaking it all in on our tree-lined streets and getaways. The lemonade on our front cover is very symbolic this month – not only as a favourite summer drink, but it recently helped a 6-yearold raise more than $1,300 for a very special little boy. Read all about it and other great things our young people are doing on the Tidbits page. August also marks the one-year anniversary in our office at 24 Toronto St. N. When we moved in, it was a goal to help revitalize the downtown in our own small way; we have now painted the entire building outside, plus our interior, installed an energy-effecient outdoor solar light, window decals, planted flowers and laid mulch. We’re proud to have made a contribution to the betterment of the town we love. We wanted to spend a bit more time with our families this summer and focus on planning the next year of issues for you. So we present a small but mighty magazine with tales from Uxbridge’s doppelganger, readers’ take on summer, the best guacamole recipe ever, and of course another packed events calendar you’ve come to rely on to plan your days. Enjoy!

town talk tidbits Mini help for Cooper
Here’s another another reason to love Uxbridge: the outreach of our community’s littlest people in support of Cooper Lotton. In June, Cooper was in a tragic lawn mower accident. On his own initiative, Creative Director Kirsty Kernohan’s 6-year-old son, Liam, one of Cooper’s classmates, set out to raise $500 for his buddy via a lemonade stand at the Uxbridge Farmer’s Market. Uxbridgians flooded the tent and donated an incredible $1,306.84. The same week, the Minor Peewee and Minor Atom Uxbridge Stars (ages 9 and 11) raised $4,600 for the Lotton family during a bottle drive, learning how to give back to their community, says manager Jim Jamieson. And Goals for Cooper one hot night in July saw all the U6 youth soccer teams donate $1 for each ball through the unmanned nets.

Story and photos by Dana Kenedy
I
travelled 6,000 kilometers only to end up in Uxbridge again. Uxbridge, England, that is. The large town haunts and skews my Google searches whenever I look for a place to eat or shop. So, when my boyfriend and I took a trip to England and Wales in May, I just had to visit our English doppelganger to see what all the fuss was about. Upon exiting the subway station at the end of the Piccadilly line, we began our journey through the other Uxbridge. It was like stepping out of the wardrobe and entering Narnia for the first time. I didn’t know what to expect. The atmosphere was completely different from that of the small town of Uxbridge, Ont. It had not one, but two malls, right across from each other, separated

High Street. Uxbridge’s oldest building is located on it: St. Margaret’s Church, with parts of the building dating back to the 14th century. However, it has been a place of worship since the 12th century -- almost 1,000 years! It’s definitely much older than our Uxbridge, which was founded in 1806. Philip Sherwood writes in his book, Around Uxbridge: Past & Present, that the first recorded mention of the English town was in 1107 under the name of Woxbrigge, and by the 1800s, it was one of the most important market towns in the area. While it differs vastly in many respects, it was a delight to take a look around the town I always get results for in Google, to see the big sister of our charming, tranquil town.

only by a street wide pedestrian walkway bustling with people. A glaring difference was the amount of people. While our quaint town has a population of about 19,000, according to the 2006 Statistics Canada survey, our English counterpart has more than 85,000. Standing between the two malls, I could feel a sense of urgency from those around me as they dashed to catch their train or hail one of the many London black cabs lined up in front of the station. Every 10 minutes an iconic red doubledecker bus came bumbling down the street with Uxbridge as its destination -quite a surreal sight. Around the corner from the modern shopping area is the narrow and winding

From mY mom’s kitChen Ingredients
• 2 ripe avocados, pitted and diced • 2-3 minced cloves of garlic • 2 green/red/yellow peppers and diced • 3 green onions or 1/2 red onion finely diced • 1 tomato seeded and diced • 1 cup whole kernel corn (defrosted frozen or fresh cooked off the cob) • 1 hot pepper, diced (optional) • juice of 2-3 limes • 1/4 c. finely chopped cilantro • lots of salt and pepper
Chunky guacamole
directions
• Wash and dice all veggies and combine in a bowl. • Let limes rest at room temperature for a while, then roll them on a cutting board to soften (this makes them easier to juice). Juice two to start, adding more to taste. his is my friend Shelley Macbeth’s famous recipe. You might know her • Toss veggies with lime juice, adding salt and pepper and from Blue heron Books, and if you do, you’ll agree she is colourful, surprising and often the life of the party just like this appetizer. i’ve been trying cilantro. • Chill for at least an hour, even overnight, for the flavours guacamole for years, but the creamy texture has always been problematic to combine. for me. This version, with tons of diced yummy veggies and fresh lime juice, • Serve with tortilla chips or served on tacos or fajitas. is absolutely delicious and perfect for a summer afternoon.
