November, an interesting time of year to reflect on the many ways we can not only honour our veterans at Remebrance Day services, but how we can honour them for all they have done for our society on a daily basis. We honour them because they have made a difference, a difference to this town, this province and this country, they gave us freedom to live our lives the way we want. The kids of today learn about our Veterans from family and at School. From what I understand, Uxbridge Schools do a fantastic job teaching our kids about our veterans; coodos to all the teachers making the veterans legacy live on. Are our efforts enough, I don’t think so, but as residences of Uxbridge we all try. We all attend the Remembrance Day services, or certainly most of us, we buy poppies, we honour in the best way we know how. But we can do more, we can advocate for our veterans, send letters to our government, buy more poppies, volunteer. Every bit helps. When you see a story on Social Media share it, like our Legions Facebook page, or join the Legion. All of our Social Media options cost nothing but they all certainly help with public awareness. The Legion is not just a social hub for veterans, but so much more, there are services and resources available for our veterans young and old. The Legion in every community is critical. I speak a lot about the veterans and about our local cenotaph. Although I have no Canadian veterans as ancestors I do have British heritage, and wherever you are from in the world, there is one person who fought and risked their life, so we can live as we do now. So take a moment, walk to the Cenotaph and read the names, they sacrificed in unimaginable ways so that our future was a better place to live. Next time you walk past a veteran, stop, say hi and shake their hand, they are without a doubt our heros.

Novembers flower is the Chrysanthemum. They are beautiful coloured flowers that say goodbye to autumn and hello to winter. November’s birthstone is the Topaz which is also known as the “Healing Quartz”

November is Peanut Butter Lovers Month, time to celebrate our favorite food! Americans will celebrate by eating more than 65 million pounds of peanut butter during the month of November. Southern Peanut Growers, representing southeastern peanut farmers, started the celebration as Peanut Butter Lovers Day on November 4, 1990. November 4 marks the anniversary of the first patent for peanut butter, applied for by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg on November 4, 1895. It grew to a month-long celebration in 1995 when peanut butter celebrated its 100th birthday!

olunteers are not paid because they are worthless, but because they are priceless!

This month’s face is one that most of the residents have seen around town. You will see him at most every event as an enthusiastic volunteer. Let me introduce Darryl Picov.

smile and twinkle in his eye. I spent quite a lot of time discussing volunteering with Darryl and he remembers each activity with excitement. His resume includes being involved in the Trestle Event, volunteering at Canada Day, and raising funds for The New Animal Shelter. He also participated in the Terry Fox Run. The list is endless. When asked why he volunteers so much, Darryl simply says “because I love it!!!!” It would be difficult to find such a devoted volunteer around Uxbridge. I thought it would be fun to share with you a few things about Darryl you may not know; Darryl loves reading Stephen King books, is a musician playing the harmonica at Trinity Church every week, has very high moral values, but possibly the most important of all, is that he is a devoted Blue Jays fan.

Darryl is 48 years old and has been a resident of Uxbridge for 25 years. He resides in Uxbridge with his mom and beloved beagle ‘Ted’. Darryl is very family oriented and he spends as much time as possible with his siblings as well as nieces and nephews.

6

Around town, Darryl is an icon. He pops in and visits many of the merchants along Brock Street on his way to an event. He carries a cookie for the doggies he sees along the way and stops to share his latest project. As the official Torch Bearer of the Pan Am Games, you may have seen him proudly carry the torch for Uxbridge. He is so proud of that moment and he loves to share his experience with a big

Darryl is a giant of a man with an even bigger heart. The next time you see him at an event remember to thank him. Not only is he a tireless volunteer, but he sincerely cares about Uxbridge.

As promised, part two of our story on WindReach Farm, a facility devoted to ch a ng ing the lives of people who face challenges completing daily activities that many of us take for granted. The people at WindReach assist many with all types of disabilities to fulfill their dreams, improve trust and confidence all with the gentle animals, dedicated volunteers and a safe facility to teach, explore and train to compete. WindReach is a member of the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (CanTRA) and the Ontario Therapeutic Riding Association (OnTRA) with all instructors certified with Can TRA or PATH. Durham Therapeutic Riding Association (DRTA) also runs their own independent program at the WindReach facilities. The program at WindReach is a unique equestrian facility that is not only beautiful but has updated indoor and outdoor arenas. They have a strong Therapeutic Riding program that has a huge impact on those with a disability. Riding improves balance, reflexes, circulation to name a few, helps with confidence and helps to develop friendships and build relationships. I had the opportunity to chat with a Mom who was watching a session with her son, it was emotional for me to hear about the program and talk to the Mom about what the program

has done for her son. Silently entering the equestrian program, he has been to many sessions and now is vocal, showing confidence and developing a friendship with his incredible horse. The opportunity to observe this confirmed for me that facilities such as WindReach have to continue on at all costs. The equestrian program does not stop there; Can Praxis Equine program uses WindReach for their very important program for our veterans. This program is designed for veterans and their families suffering from PTSD. This program is a powerful and successful way to assist our greatest heroes, performed at a facility that is not only sensitive to the needs of this program, but dedicated in assisting. With all of these programs available I will once again urge you to look at the wonderful programs WindReach offers, for those wishing to donate, purchase “Horseshoes for Hope” to quote WindReach Farm, a place where their programs and services inspire hope in the people, and hope they do inspire. Although a registered charity, WindReach relies heavily on private funding. The legacy of founder Alexander J. Mitchell (Sandy) must live on.

peacefully productive

| how to find your authentic voice |

BY DARRIN DAVIS

(Spoiler Alert: This article will not help you find your authentic voice.) As a species, we humans really like to hand over our power. We do it all the time. We distrust ourselves so much that we’re constantly on the lookout for new and exciting ways to give our internal control over to others. Corporate advertising convinces us that we’re not good enough until we own THAT particular car, and smell like THAT particular strange combination of fruit and syrup and pine tar, and have a butt that will snugly fit into THOSE particular designer jeans. And we obediently lap it up like the good little doggies we are. All too often we also let others decide what our hopes and dreams should be. Without even meaning to, our parents, spouses and peers are busy at work carving out narrow, safe little destinies for us, because we’re too lazy, confused, or afraid to decide what it is that we truly want out of life.

backwards to me. I’m going to give you a little tip here that may save you loads of money down the road… You’ve always known your authentic voice. It’s been with you all along. It‘s the laugh that only ever comes out when you’re out for tea with your best friend. The one where you snort a little, and get a little bit of finely steeped Monk’s Blend Organic up your nose. It’s the way you talk to your dog when no-one else is around- in that elevated, sappy aunt voice. It’s been with you singing ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ in the shower, with your shampoo bottle as a mic. And your authentic voice is right there in the doodles you make while you’re waiting on hold for ‘Customer Retention’ to negotiate your mobile phone contract. So there’s the ticket, friends. You’ve already found your authentic voice. In fact, you never even lost it. You just needed a little nudge to help recognize it. Now that you’re reaquainted, it’s up to you to decide how you’re going to use that unique, authentic voice of yours to make something that matters… Have a great November!

We chase after the dreams that corporate shareholders have voted are the best ones for us to buy into. We let ourselves be coerced into following in the footsteps of what our parents wish they would have done when they were our age. We start to worry deeply about what our spouse would think if they knew we were contemplating quitting our day job to follow our passions.

His bi-weekly live music video series ‘Songs On A Pink Couch’ can be subscribed to at www.youtube.com/user/thedarrindavisband. Darrin hosts a weekly Sunday night Acoustic Open Mic at Colonel McGrady’s Pub, 44 Brock St. W. He lives in the wildwood splendour of Uxbridge, Ontario, with his lovely wife Amy, his darling newborn daughter Sadie, and his incorrigible pup, Dublin. All 4 are relentless Blue Jays fans.

As artists, we must sing with many different voices before we find our own. We stumble around in the dark for a while, grasping at unknown objects, until we slowly start to put together a catalogue of things that we actually like. Things that have meaning for us. I’ve said many times that we are the combined sum of our influences. And as we gradually build up our mental scrapbook of inspiration, we eventually start to piece together various intriguing attributes, ideas, genres, mediums, accents and nuances into a patchwork that starts to become ‘us.’ This is called ‘combinatorial creativity,’ and it’s the cornerstone on which many integral companies and inspired individuals have built their success. Steve Jobs was a master at this. By combining two things that were once considered completely separate (beautiful design, and top quality computers) Jobs created an iconic empire.

10

What empire would you like to create today? Do you know yet? Do you have at least some sort of idea of ‘what you want to be when you grow up?’ Of course you do! You’ve been loving things for years and years. You’ve been intrigued by particular causes and colours and combinations and characters and chord progressions all your life. And like those stunning Russian macro photos of snowflakes (you’ve seen those, right? If not, get thee to google immediately!) your own particular combination is completely unique. Sure, other people might be writing Hungarian Folk Ballads in minor keys featuring tales of Love and Murder and Investment Bankers. But no-one else is doing it exactly the way you are, with your whole entire charmed life of ecstatic highs and valleyed lows thrown into the mix for spice.

There are walls and walls of books written on the topic of ‘Finding Your Authentic Voice.’ But to me, that all seems a wee bit silly. If you need an ‘expert’ (who has never met you and doesn’t even know you exist!) to help you find your true voice, well… you may be in trouble. Why is that, you ask? Well, think about it. You’re buying a book (or going to a workshop, etc.) written by someone WHO ISN’T YOU, with the sole purpose of finding YOUR authentic voice. Seems a little

Lace Craft Show at the Goodwood Community Centre. Starting at 10 a.m., this holiday show will feature one-of-a-kind gifts made by talented craftspeople from across the GTA. Organizer Bev Northeast says the event, which has been running since the early 1990s, attracts an excellent turnout. “Usually the event raises funds for the Goodwood Community Centre, but this year, we’re donating the proceeds to the Thomas Foster Memorial restoration. The show benefits the artisans who display, as well as the entire Uxbridge community.” On Saturday, November 14th, you can enjoy the Uxbridge Rotary Christmas Home Tour between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Long-time lovers of this event will be thrilled that the Rotary Club of Uxbridge is bringing it back this year with a mix of urban and rural residences. Tickets are $25 and are available at UxbridgeChristmasHomeTour.ca/ or at Canadian Tire, Blue Heron Books, Present, Presents, Presents and Ron Noble Insurance. Of course, in November, Santa Claus starts making his special appearances, and in Uxbridge, he will be riding the York-Durham Heritage Railway train on Saturdays and Sundays from November 21st through December 13th. Seating is limited and by reservation only for these special Santa Rides, which last approximately one hour and feature on-board entertainment. Plus, the Jolly Old Fella himself will come around to the seated children, and the Trainmen will provide goodies to all the kids. Fares are $20 per person or 4 for $74. hey shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. ~Laurence Brown

As you look around, you see almost everyone wearing a poppy and being the most respectful teenager ever. After the moment of silence, we sit back down and listen to the student speakers introduce the veterans who came that day. The veterans get a chance to read a few of the popular Remembrance Day poems with their grandkids. While watching the slide show that the students and teachers have prepared, there is never one dry eye in the gymnasium.

We honour the veterans every year on the 11th month, on the 11th day and on the 9th hour because the 11th hour is when we are in class learning. When the tribute is over though, you feel like you’ve just left a therapist office or a lecture. What I mean is that you feel like a different person, you look at everything differently and realize that these few veterans that are still alive won’t always be with us. The emotional impact won’t be the same for the younger generations who will only be able to google information on their stories. It won’t be the same for them as actually meeting the veterans and hearing their stories.

Remembrance Day is that one day of the year when we all get together to remember the veterans that fought for us. I remember that in elementary school we would pay tribute by making class wreaths and present them at a school assembly. But at Uxbridge Secondary School we always go full out on this important day. Our tribute begins in early November, when we line the schoolyard with crosses of the veterans who died at war. In addition, we decorate the school with Remembrance Day art, poppies, poems and pictures of the veterans we’ve lost. Both students and teachers alike bring in photos of relatives that served and present them in our famous Remembrance slide show. The assembly is always hosted in the gymnasium from 9 am to 10 am and everyone is welcome! Once everyone in the school is seated, the veterans and their families walk down the aisle to their seats while the USS band plays Oh Canada and we have a moment of silence.

I never had the honour of meeting relatives that served in the war but the fact that I can see real veterans that fought for us is amazing! Even learning about the war in my grade 10 history class was incredible, hearing about what the soldiers went through and what they had to do to fight for our freedom If you are young and don’t really like going to your Remembrance Day ceremony, let me just say that if you just sit and listened about what these veteran did for our country you will see the world in a new way. You will realize that if it weren’t for them you possibly wouldn’t be here right now. Just remember that November 11th is the most important day for the month and that we should wear our poppies proudly and honour the one ones who fought for our country and for us.
