Making a difference with youth, one sale at a time Kelly Meek is a unique parent. At just 19, she gave birth to her son, and three years later found herself on her own as a single parent. Seventeen years later, she had her daughter. “What my son faced when he graduated 10 years ago is different than what my nieces and nephews are facing now, and will be different again when my daughter leaves school,” Kelly said. “Youth have a lot more battles than we ever faced.” This is what drew her to Young Life, a not-for-profit profit Christian organization with a chapter at Uxbridge Secondary School. Young Life’s mandate is to reach out to high school students of all backgrounds, regardless of economics, religion or race, providing them with a safe and fun environment in which to grow physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. In 2012, Kelly is donating 5% of her

commission from every sale to Young Life. She is a realtor with Royal LePage Frank Real Estate at 38 Brock St. W. in Uxbridge. “It doesn’t matter what walk of life you’re from,” she says of the group. “You can hang out and be together. Those divisions are gone.” Kelly attended an info night on Young Life and heard of a young woman who was suicidal; after just eight months in Young Life, she had a complete turn around. Stories like this don’t surprise Sarah Howe, 26, the area intern with the group at USS. “People are noticing a difference with kids we work with,” she says. “I’ve had parents come up and ask what happened to their kid...(they) have seen a difference. One of the biggest things we hear from our kids is that Young Life provides them a place where they feel they are accepted and loved.” Sarah’s involvement stems from a youth

pastor that made a huge difference in her life as a teenager. The group meets every Tuesday outside the school to sing songs, play games and talk about faith, then head to McDonald’s to hang out. “We live in a world where teens are craving genuine relationships,” she says. “So many kids feel lost and need someone to care.” It’s this enthusiasm that Kelly is so grateful for, and wants to support. “The focus is on being a teenager and being happy and healthy,” she says. “I love that this is available to our youth and helps break down all societal boundaries.” Kelly also pays homage to her time as a single mom of 13 years by donating a portion of what she makes to local single parents in Uxbridge Township.

Youth Finances: Be Smart With Your Money By Rachel Pavely

uxbridgetowntalk.com

// February 2012

Do I really need to buy this? How much is it? Those are just a few questions that go through my mind when I’m about to buy something. The same can’t be said about a friend of mine; she buys things because she feels good knowing they’re hers. When I spend money, I feel guilty even if it’s something small like shampoo. We are perfect examples of the two different kinds of people in this world: spenders and savers. When interviewing Michael Stewart, a local financial advisor with Edward Jones, he said spenders spend money because it makes them feel good. What they might be buying is not necessary but it could have colourful packaging or be the newest thing making them think they need it. A majority of his clients are older and

4

have landed themselves in major debt, he says. They lived a lifestyle they could not afford. Lack of budgeting goals caused them to be stuck in this situation. I feel spending habits have to start at a young age. My parents taught me cash accumulation is important and I always felt so proud going to the bank with a handful of cash I worked hard for. As my account started growing, I wanted to save even more. I started to understand what I wanted to do with my money. When I buy anything, I think about how much work it took to be able to buy that product. For example, if I want to buy a shirt for $50, I would have to work for five hours. To me, working five hours is not worth buying a shirt I may only wear a few times. Kevin Cochrane, regional director with Dominion Lending Centres, recently came

into our high school co-op class and spoke about young people and saving money. In his opinion, education is the key to success. He believes investing is a start in gaining financial wealth. Things like buying an investment property or bonds are a good way to put your foot in the door. Retiring was also a big topic. If we start saving now, we will be able to live comfortably when we retire. Cochrane brought up an interesting point which stirred conversation: save 10% off each pay cheque. Stewart also believes financial education for young people is beneficial. They need to identify how they want to deal with their money, what they will sacrifice to be able to live the lifestyle they can afford and to understand how to spend their money. I am fortunate because I know how to make choices regarding what I want and what I need. For spenders, they buy because it makes them feel good. When I save, I feel good. I feel like I have achieved something greater than having a lot of things and knowing my hard work is enabling me to come out of college with

less debt. Money does not grow on trees. Saving money is an important part of being able to live as snug as a bug in a rug. Knowing what you want and where you want to go with your cash is just the first step towards being financially secure.

Sometimes you just don’t know where to start when it comes to finances. Here are a few websites you may find handy and help understand the scary world of money: • moneysense.ca: dubbed Canada’s personal finance website, it’s packed with articles, calculators and resources for people of ages • redflagdeals.com: updated to the minute with Canadian coupons, online deals, special offers and a very active message board • moneyville.ca: the Toronto Star’s user-friendly site about budgeting, saving, borrowing, investing, retiring and more • practicalmoneyskills.ca: an online site for anyone looking for advice on money management. It has tutorials and lessons for kids, teens, and parents. • wisebread.com/resources: a list of 190 resources for saving money from budgeting to sites like Freecycle. Well worth the time to browse through.

Gypz Bzar, Oddities Novelties and Games Story and photo by Dana Kenedy

WHO: andrew and Michelle Hingston, owners of Gypz bzar, Oddities, Novelties and Games, 24 brock St. W. WHAT: Mainly hobby and table top games such as Magic The Gathering. “We provide a space for kids and adults to come and play table top board games,” says Michelle. “and provide a place for them to be social.” They also sell Magic booster packs, Pokemon cards, random trinkets, and games such as Quirkle, Talisman and Ticket to ride. HOW: Drop in during store hours for shopping, browsing or gaming. WHY: “We’ve wanted to open a store like this for 10 years,” Michelle says. Their type of store isn’t common in a small town so they recognized a need and seized the opportunity. “We wanted to bring a bit of downtown into small town,” explains andrew. “(People) can come here and embrace their inner geek and not be embarrassed about it. We learned that there’s a child in everyone.” BIGGEST CHALLENGE: Keeping the store running while also holding down part-time jobs. andrew is a “Jack of all trades” and does various odd jobs. Michelle is a chef at a local restaurant.

FUN: every Friday night Gypz bzar hosts Magic The Gathering games. They want to try and have tournaments once every three months. BY THE NUMBERS: andrew and Michelle opened the store about 1 year ago. Their customers vary in age, with the range being from about 8 to 80. CONTACT: 647 465 8414 gypzbzar@hotmail.com

BIGGEST REWARD: The people, they both say. “a lot of (the customers) have become really good acquaintances,” says Michelle. “It’s kind of like Cheers,” says andrew.

Shovel Snow Safely

How-to

By Dennis Milenov

Dr. Dennis Milenov is a Chiropractor at Begg Chiropractic & Wellness Centre. He lives in Uxbridge with his wife and two children. He hates shovelling snow.

// February 2012

• Don’t let the snow pile up: Frequent shovelling will allow you to move smaller amounts of snow. Clear snow early and often and work at a steady pace that is comfortable for you. • Warm up: Just like any other exercise, take the time to warm up first. A brisk walk for 10 minutes or some dynamic stretches, can increase the heart rate to prepare you for activity. • Pick the right shovel: Use a lightweight pusher-type shovel. If you are using a metal shovel, spray it with Teflon first so the snow won’t stick to it. • Push don’t throw: Whenever possible, push the snow to the

side rather than lifting and throwing it. That way you avoid lifting heavy shovelfuls of snow and sudden twisting or turning movements that are stressful on the spine and muscles of the low back. Do NOT throw snow over your shoulder or to the side! • Bend your knees: If you find you have to lift a shovelful of snow, use your knees, hips and leg muscles while keeping your back straight. Take a light load that you can lift easily and turn your feet in the direction you’re lifting. Keep the load close to your body. • Take a break: Shovelling can be hard work! Take a break if you feel tired or short of breath. Stop your activity immediately if you experience sudden or prolonged pain in any joint or muscle. If you have chest pain that is severe, seek medical attention immediately. • Avoid slips and falls: A fall could leave you with more than just a sore back! Watch for ice patches and uneven surfaces and make sure you wear shoes or boots with slip resistant soles.

uxbridgetowntalk.com

We’ve been lucky so far this year as snow accumulation has been minimal, sparing our backs in the process. But, there is still more winter to come and likely more snow that will need shovelling! Keep in mind that shovelling snow can require a strenuous effort, especially when moving wet and heavy snow. Loading a shovel (more than 1kg) with about 5kg of snow (which is about average), every five seconds and you are moving a load of over 70kg in one minute. Repeat for 15 minutes and you have shoveled 1000kg of snow! Each year we see many patients in our chiropractic office with low back complaints related to snow shovelling. Here are some tips to consider when shovelling that can minimize the risk of a back injury:

Spotless community-based cleaning

905 852 9419 www.uxbridgecleaning.ca

We are proud to say that Uxbridge Cleaning was founded in 2011. For ten years, Sharie Heise cleaned homes, and offices privately to allow more time with her daughter Harmony. She met business woman Stephanie Coy, mother to Kelsey, Jackson, and Wesley, and they began working on an innovative approach to cleaning. We are local girls who are driven to succeed. Our goal is to create a community based business that employs hardworking women in Uxbridge. We are a perfect pair. Our passion for business and dedication to superior customer service has built a sturdy relationship between us. We want every client to be satisfied so they will tell their friends about our ser-

vice. Word of mouth is the best way for our business to grow. We welcome feedback. We are always trying to improve. We laugh lots, and have fun everyday. We treat our staff to coffee, sing while we work, drive around the roundabout while screaming, and try to create an enjoyable working atmosphere. Cleaning houses is hard work, but we want to make it fun. As we continue to expand, we are met with new challenges and opportunities. We currently do real estate, commercial, residential, and construction cleaning. We support local groups, and look forward to doing more charitable cleanings this year. In the future, we would like to expand our business into neighboring communities.

Changes to curb side scrap metal collection service

12

Durham Region introduces changes to its scrap metal residential collection services in Ajax, Pickering, Clarington, Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock. Starting February 13, Durham Region is making important changes to its residential scrap metal curb side collection services in the six municipalities that it services. These changes should result in more materials being diverted from landfill to recycling markets. Metal goods such as appliances, in addition to porcelain items including toilets and sinks, and unwanted electronic waste, will now be managed through a “call-in” service. To have these types of items collected, residents are asked to call 1 800 667 5671 and schedule a collection. Collection dates will be assigned by Regional staff based on a pre-determined

collection schedule. There is no limit to the amount of metal goods, porcelain or e-waste that can be set out – the more you set out... the more we recycle but you must call for collection. Collection of bulky items such as furniture does not change in these municipalities. There is still a two-item per set out limit for bulky items. Residents are not required to call in to schedule collection of bulky items. Residents of these municipalities will receive information about these service level improvements in late January or early February. For more information on these service level improvements including complete listings of acceptable metal, porcelain and electronic waste, please call the Region of Durham at 1 800 667 5671, visit the Region’s website at www.durhamregionwaste.ca, or email the Region at waste@durham.ca.

Where Does The Name Come From?

“Air Marshal is the Batman of air travel. It’s up to him to stop the bad guys. He’s the guy, there’s no one else. But I think that everyone kind of believes that they could be that guy. We all wonder, if it came down to it, would we up for the task? Stories like Flight 93 from 9/11 propel these thoughts, I think we all like to believe we could have taken control of that plane from terrorists and landed it safely. “So the name Air Marshal Landing comes from some of these ideas. The ‘landing’ part assumes that Good wins in the end. And you know what? It does,” says Matt Simmonds.

Uxbridge is home to rising stars Air Marshal Landing. The group started in 2008 where the band’s three members, Matt Simmonds, Cory Adrian and Graham Drummond were attending university. Simmonds and Adrian are long-time friends who first got together to jam in 2005 while attending Uxbridge Secondary School. Upon graduating from USS, Simmonds and Adrian left Uxbridge to attend the University of Western Ontario and the University of Waterloo, respectively. As such, their musical careers were placed on hold while they focused on their studies, only getting together occasionally to play. While at Western, Simmonds met Waterdown resident and drummer Drummond. Simmonds is keyboard and bass guitar, Adrian is on lead guitar and vocals, and Drummond provides the beat. However, the newly-formed group still had a huge distraction to contend with: school. “While attending university, we could only get together maybe once a month to practice,” recounts Simmonds. “Usually we only had time to rehearse during the day of a gig,” he adds. Upon completing their university degrees, the three young men could now focus full-time on their musical careers. Presently, Uxbridge serves as a perfect place to base their group. “It’s a nice community in the country with access to the city…a perfect half-way point,” admits Adrian. In addition to that “smalltown feel,” and his family living just outside of town, Simmonds adds his parents’ garage serves as an ideal place where they can rehearse. “We can make lots of noise without bothering any neighbours,” laughs Simmonds. And of course, “money is an issue if we lived in Toronto.” While their music appeals to teens and young adults, the three agree it first must appeal to themselves. Their main focus is to produce music they personally enjoy. “If you can’t do it for yourself, then there is no sense playing at all,” explains Simmonds. One of their keys to success is the ability to record their or jam sessions…with their iPhones! A big part of their marketing involves social media through Facebook, Twitter, and their official website. “We’re as social as you can get,” Adrian says. “If you are not on social media, you’re not going to make it,” adds Drummond. The future for Air Marshal Landing appears to be quite active for these three fun-loving guys. They have a number of performances planned on the university circuit, an appearance at Canadian Music Week slated in March 2012 in Toronto, and their first full-length album to be released in late spring 2012. The band will also perform at the Uxbridge Skate Park Fundraiser on Feb. 18 alongside Whosarmy and Lauren Malyon. “We also hope to make an appearance at NXNE (North By Northeast, a music and film Festival) in June,” adds Simmonds.

Grammie’s Jammies by Carly Foster

M

y mother-in-law (my kids’ Grammie) doesn’t bake very often, but when she does, it’s often these delicious jam sandwich cookies. They taste so good dunked in tea that I usually hide at least half of them in a secret part of the freezer away from the rest of my family. The cookies are crispy when they’re cooked, but once you add the jam in the middle, they’re soft and chewy – and spreading the jam is a great kid activity. I think they’d be a delightful treat for a special someone on Valentine’s or Family Day.

Ingredients

• 3/4 c butter, softened • 1 c lightly packed brown sugar • 1/2 c granulated sugar • 1 egg • 2 tbsp water • 2 tsp vanilla • 2/3 c all purpose flour • 3/4 tsp baking soda • 1/2 tsp cinnamon • 3 c quick cooking oatmeal • 1 1/2 c raspberry jam*
