ABSTRACT

For many years, the process of globalization has been observed all over the world, which affects to all fields of human activities. As one of the consequences of globalization, in order to find better work and quality of life, people move to live to bigger cities, thereby creating the basis for another phenomenon, urbanization. Both of these processes, which parallel to each other cover the whole world, have both advantages and disadvantages. As a result, today there are many cities that have lost their former identity, which are not attractive for life, they do not develop, and therefore the level of unemployment, pollution and other problems in these cities and settlements increases. For many years to solve these kinds of problems, both in architectural and urban practice, there are many tools and methods that experts use to make cities and architectural landmarks more attractive, which are branding, rebranding, restudy, revision, revival, regeneration, etc. These tools are directed to bigger cities and community centres. However, has appeared recently practice, named revalorisation. According to this method, cities, settlements, can return lost value, identity, attractiveness, which they lost under various existing circumstances. This research thesis aims to create a new strategic vision for Galciana, a historical town near Prato, which lost attractiveness for residents, with method of revalorisation. In order to develop approach of revalorisation, I would like to divide work to several phases, and for each of them to work in different scales, from metropolitan to detailed architectural drawings. Each of phases have contribution to social review, by interviewing residents of town, in a way to familiarize myself with their opinions, needs and preferences. From stratigraphically analysis, is important to understand main existing functions of town and later to detect main lacks. All amalgamated analysis will transfer me to architectural scale, to find correct architectural concept, with influence of contextual and existing situation. I believe, that passing through all of these analyses, in different scales, it will be possible to create harmonious urban environment, revive and adapt historical town with forgotten identity to the contemporary requirements of nowadays life.

2. SEARCHING FORGOTTEN IDENTITY

KEYWORDS Nowadays, in the century of globalisation and increasing urbanisation some cities experiencing number of difficulties, regarded to social or economical factors. Especially we can consider little cities or settlements, which have been lost their own identity, former attraction for residents and future generation. The general view of these cities is negative, fragmented and very often neglected by government and other official responsible. However, architects, urban planner always thinking about history meanwhile about future, as a bridge between time. It is not secret, there are special ways to re-discover and revision cities through special methods, as rebranding, restudy, revival, regeneration, restoration, redeveloping, revalorisation etc. The last one (revalorisation), one of the recent, less known method, which can be used for revival historical cities, which have own legend and story, history and traditions, and finally IDENTITY. After finding a special way to revalorise specific settlement or town, imagination can change to the positive side, to be more social, attractive, liveable and innovative.

SCHEME OF KEYWORDS 10

11

METHOD In my own research, after acquaintance with determinative literature, I divided my work to key phases, especially 11 phases which can be planned by architect and urban planner in design process. The first step is historical and contextual analysis. In which is important to familiarize yourself with existing situation, with urban texture of the town, with history and traditions. After all urban analysis, next step is stratigraphically analysis, in which is important to collect all data of commercial and residential background, to do layers of functions etc. Furthermore, is important to collect data about residents, their lifestyle, priorities, need, daily routines, clarify important spots and lackness of the town. The next step is strategy, which should be according urban and social data. Meanwhile, it is possible to start to think about the concept for possible future architectural integration, and after all routine with investment, general evaluation, starting implementation in construction site, supervision and finally grand opening for residents of all area.

MADE IN PLEYEL A MINI METROPOLIS

Architects: Office of Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) Ambitions are nothing new to Pleyel. The potential of this area was discovered as early as the 1950s, when a radical modernization plan – an ensemble of four tall towers – was proposed for the area. The current Pleyel Tower, immediately north to the site, was the only one ever realized. The plan is a typical example of twentieth century utopianism: large chunks of the city for a single user, designed by a single pair of hands. Today, the issues are different: how does a small site accommodate large ambitions without being overrun by the type of singular vision, which will inevitably set it apart, and thus isolate it, from the surrounding neighborhoods. Is it possible to entertain large ambitions, without entertaining the large scale? More than fifty years after the Pleyel Plan, we know too well that the city only emerges from a joint effort. A vibrant urban quarter inevitably solicits the participation of many: users and designers alike. We propose a dense configuration of buildings, with different uses and of different scales. Small towards the existing neighborhood, and larger as they get closer to the railway tracks. The loose pattern of individual buildings allows for a seamless integration of existing buildings that are worth preserving. Each new building stands on its own, but in close proximity to the next, creating a fine grain of circulation in between with a maximum of street frontage, which in turn allows for a maximum mix of uses. SEOULLO SKYGARDEN Architects: MVRDV Seoullo, the Korean name for Skygarden translates to ‘towards Seoul’ and ‘Seoul Street’, while 7017 marks the overpass’ construction year of 1970, and its new function as a public walkway in 2017. The pedestrianised viaduct next to Seoul’s main station is the next step towards making the city and especially the central station district, greener, friendlier and more attractive, whilst connecting all patches of green in the wider area. In central Seoul, a true plant village has been realised on a former inner city highway in an ever-changing urban area accommodating the biggest variety of Korean plant species and transforming it into a public 983-metre long park gathering 50 families of plants including trees, shrubs and flowers displayed in 645 tree pots, collecting around 228 species and sub-species. In total, the park will include 24,000 plants (trees, shrubs and flowers) that are newly planted many of which will grow to their final heights in the next decade. From the start, MVRDV engaged with this need to change the forgotten and existing infrastructure into a green symbol that will become a catalyst for a greener quarter for Seoul. Together with the municipality, local NGO’s, landscape teams and city advisers are committed to accommodating the biggest diversity of flora into a strictly urban condition. New bridges and stairs connect the viaduct with hotels, shops and gardens.

Welcome to URBAN Wellness! Architects: ESTUDIO LUNAR The current situation of Gjilan is not the result of a controlled planning, it has been the consequence of multiple historical and, also recent, events that induced to the emergence of urban figures that were answering to the immediate needs but not responding to a planning with an idea of future for the city. The central point of the city is a roundabout for cars were the city jail is also situated. We could define the current situation as an “urban sickness” or a point where the city of Gjilan cannot evolve more without a correction. The city is only a limited extent product of conscious planning; largely it is the result of rules and forces originating far beyond the realm of planning. A city’s development is shaped by the consequences and side effects of laws, funding programs, markets, and technological progress. Relevant interventions in urban development upon changes in the social parameters, such as in cultural investment, property laws or economic development measures. Nobody can offer the perfect planning solution for the overall city and future growing of Gjilan area without solving first the current issues; we offer a urban vision to create a totally new healthy image of Gjilan city, changing the character of its central spine and creating a new Central Square of Culture, dominated by new buildings that will situate Gjilan as a urban reference in its area. We’ll create a new starting point for a great future of this city and area by systematizing its public space.

Agricultural Park as a principle of urban transformation Architect: Bogdan Peric

The implementation of a linear agricultural park in order to redevelop the existing abandoned area into the new attraction point of a public interest merged with the headquarters of the Slow Food organisation and the product on-site consumption Starting from the very first analysis of the San Cristoforo area of transformation, which was one of the several areas proposed by the educational initiative Re-formare Milano, it was made clear that the main target of the work would be based on the integration of different natural and infrastructural systems emphasising their existing urban relation. Thus, this specific project offered me the possibility to develop the new masterplan by generating the complex transformation approach followed by the specific division of the analytic issues into the four-scale research regarding the strategic allocation of the major structural systems. Thus, disregarding the importance of a transversal axis connecting the scattered urban elements together. The main concept of my proposal is inspired by the two-directional development, that would establish the balance not only to the urban quality of the city and blur its margins with the rural surroundings, but would also give the capability to create an important infrastructural visual node, which would help to determine the new attraction point for the local people and visitors.

ONCE IN URBAN TRIP Do we know metropolitan Florence? This synthesis of mental maps were done by ten persons, who live in Metropolitan Area of Florence. The main aim was identified some of the main spots of the area. During that test, all of the people, show correct configuration of metropolitan area with main three cities as Florence, Prato and Pistoia. All of them identify Florence as Art centre of the area, while Prato as industrial centre. Most of participants draw trainway from Florence to Pistoia, and identify location of IKEA and Airport. Four persons (about 50%) showed Galciana for one the main metropolitan hospital.

MAIN SPOTS OF FUNCTIONS

After Mental map, I start to own observation on this area, from google map and official data from website of Municipality Prato and Florence. These resources help to understand better main function of the well-known cities, towns, and settlements with their functions according to the surface of land. I was searching for 5 important functions, which are culture, education, health (sport, hospitals and pharmacy), commercial and industrial areas.

SHAPE OF THE CITY NANCY

Since the ancient time, people were trying to develop their location of residence close to the rivers and green areas, to provide food and other needs. Nowadays, most cities, especially medieval or historical have common shape, according to develop of urban texture, from central area to periphery, around natural resources. Regarding to these 2 facts, today we have recognizable shape of cities, with historical, central areas and residential periphery. This helping us to not get lost in the new and not familiar cities, where we have trip, holidays or any other visits.

URBAN VIEW During zooming of Metropolitan Area of Florence, especially near Prato, it is possible to note urban island or urban satellite of Prato, which is abandoned and connected in the same way – Galciana. According to urban sprawl between Florence, Prato and Pistoia, and position of train way, Autostrada, this little village or town start to be blocked from all the sides, what made that area almost closed and independent. Between historical centre of Prato and centre of Galciana there ar 55 minutes by the walk in direction east-west. It is not so much, if we will have pedestrian road, however there is highway between Prato and Galciana, what makes almost impossible to walk between cities. Moreover, northern from Galciana passing trainway, which completely blocks any connection with close settlement- Maliseti. It is important to note, that all of these aspects intrigue me, to start observation of this area. In starting day, I went from Florence SMN to Prato Centrale by train. I started my trip with one empty notebook and pen. According to my previous experience at the University, I was planning start from interviewing people, about absolutely new area for me. I start immediately after arrival to Prato Centrale. In each interview after a little presentation of myself I started ask some easy questions, about place of living, school, work some leisure activities etc. As usual first several interview were not so successful. But after, with more experience or with arriving fortune I met more interest people. The most interesting person was Matteo, 40 years old, which told me that he is from Galciana(!). It was first and the most unbelievable sign about identity of Galciana as city, by it resident! Later I went to Galciana, I met more people as Matteo, which were surely telling that they are from Galciana, and Galciana is not Prato. For insure myself from future fail, I went to other villages near Prato, as Maliseti, Capezzana which are next to Galciana, however residents of these villages identified themselves as they are from Prato or their neighbourhood is a part of Prato, but I did not meet even one person, who will tell that she or he is from Maliseti or Capezzana. All of these aspects, give me feeling about Galciana as invisible city. With own identity, probably forgotten or lost.

4. SPIRAL OF TIME

SPIRAL OF TIME After primary observing the Galciana, I started study history of this settlement, for me was important how this settlement was born, growing up and how came to the existing situation. I wanted understand structure of this area, its background and traditions. Furthermore, I had found an amazing books and articles about history of Galciana, in Oblate library and Library in Galciana (DECENTRATA OVEST). The name of that book is ‘’Galciana.History and events of a village from its origins to 1945’’ by Gabriele Badiani and Emilio Bogani. Author writing about hypothesis of Galciana’s development from Palaeolithic time, and it should be noted, that he has weighty argument. So, as he argued, during excavations in Prato and Galcetti, was found remains and ruins by red jasper, the most using material during Palaeolithic time. As it is visible by diagram below, today we can have hypothesis that also in the territory of Galciana can be some traces of that time. Later, we can also purpose location of some villages of Etruscan civilization in the territory of Galciana, as well they had a lot traces in the territory of Tuscany, especially in this area. It is important to note, that in Maliseti (close to Galciana), were discovered Bronze Vow. During the Roman Empire, were built famous road, Via Cassia-Clodia, which connected Rome with Lucca, through Florence, Prato and Pistoia. Nowadays, we can also identify a hypothesis in which this road passed through territory of our research area. In addition, on 8th September of 1040 year, Galciana was first time written as settlement near Prato, with two main roads (which are look like cardo and decumanus). However, in that resource is written settlement, and not city, because for that time there was not church. Later, during XII century, was built a First Church – San Pietro, in the central part of Galciana and after this important event Galciana had chance to be a city. However, in 1348 Europe has mastered the desease of black plague, which came from Asia, through Russia Empire and Ottoman Empire. It was catastrofa for all the Europe, and also for little settlement-city as Galciana. More than half of population was died, building were burned, according to historical source. During the Renaissance time, with spectacular development of Prato, Galciana had one of the best time for development. Some of artists and writers had house in Galciana, but worked for Prato. Between 1850-1860s was build railway of Maria-Antonia, which connected Florence and Lucca, through other big cities as Prato and Pistoia. However, this railway blocked Galciana from one side, for future development. As you can see below, there is a big spiral, which representing evolution of Galciana during 20th century till today.

5. EXISTING SITUATION. PHOTO SURVEY

Galciana now has about 3700 families. A small town over 12000 inhabitants, mostly coming from outside, with the risk, unfortunately, of transforming it slowly into a dormitory location. I believe that the functions of Galciana is determined by several factors: good logistics services, hospital facilities, proximity to major roads, a seemingly quiet location.

The original community that has given so much to the history of the whole territory and which at various times has been a protagonist in the cultural, political and associative historical events is therefore fading. I said weakening, but not disappearing, because the central core is and remains the driving force of the Galcianese community.

6. STRATIGRAPHY ANALYSIS

URBAN VIEW

This hapter represent by itself synthesis of urban analysis, existing situation of Galciana in different layers. First layout showing existing environmental situation, with river, marks of relief and behaviour of sun during the year. According to sun-path analysis, it is clear that during June and July sun on highest point, while on January and December on the lowest point. Next scheme represents hierarchy of the roads with three qualifications as main road, secondary road and path road. According to this scheme , is possible to understand transportation system of Galciana, and connections with other neighbourhoods. Analysis of Figure and Ground showing to us texture of the city. Analysing this map we can observe some fragmented parts of Galciana, but the most interesting part that all together they create joint system. We can clearly understand historical part of the city, as well more contemporary buildings. Furthermore, down part of the board, showing synthesis(overlapped) of the main urban layers, buildings and functions. Historical district, which colored to darker color showing the primary direction of development, axes on the sides giving to us orientation about location of other big cities as Florence, Prato and Pistoia. Other colors represent other the most important functions and building of galciana, as commercial buildings, educational buildings, industrial buildings, residential building, cultural and health (sport, hospital, pharmacies) centres. As it is visible on this map, Galciana surrounded by urban green areas and mountains, also important point and reason of not developing of Galciana. We able to observe, that all functions located fragmented. Another important part of analysis, is identification of social active spots by the zoning, in this way we can understand most using functions, commercial centres etc.

7. SOCIAL REVIEW

SOCIAL DATA

This chapter represent synthesis of various social analysis, as mental map, flow of people, daily routine of residents, social active spots, statistics of residents, interviews etc. This kind of general view to social life giving to us a great opportunity to understand behaviour of people in the best way, for create exact vision of strategy. Mental map vs flow of people. First time I have an experience with mental map several years ago, after reading extremely interesting book ‘’Image of the City’’ by Kevin Lynch. In that book, K. Lynch had a brilliant experiment in centre of Boston, where divide zones by path, by landmarks, node and district. Mine experience in Galciana has a bit different approaches and consist by several steps. First step, is creating a mental map by residents. In that experiment was participated 8 people, which draw a center of Galciana by memory, with identifying most useful zones, shops, bars, green areas, central street etc. The next step was done by me, where during the afternoon (3 days) I was considering several central streets according to approximately number of people. I was alone and for me was impossible to calculate each of the people, but I tried show my view into the map. The map below showing synthesis of my steps.

Further, I have chosen three the most important and visited urban spots, which are Square of Church, Square of Library and Circolo of Galciana and identified them according to three group of people (by age). In this way, I had first group- from 0-30 years old, second group - from 30 to 60 years old, and finally from 60 to the end of the life. That groups of people had been observed by me during weekday and weekend during 24 hours (in different time). Diagram below, showing time, weekday and weekends, important spots and dayly routine of residents of Galciana. After these analyses, I saw that in Galciana living a lot of foreigners people, which are speaking in different languages etc. For being sure about demographical base of Galciana, I used official data from he website of Commune di Prato, where I check all important demographical information, which are also below. The lowest map on the board is existing situation in 1:1000 scale and showing also synthesis of functions, analysis of stands of people and interview. During all of these analyses I met so much new people, moreover I had been collected important and useful information for future vision of the project.

8. STRATEGY

BACK TO THE FUTURE

The process of developing future strategic vision of Galciana started by SWOT analysis, where were taking into account strengths, weaknesses, possible opportunities and threats of the neighbourhood. It is important to note, that among positive factors (strengths and opportunities) there are factors as heritage, existing textile manufacturers, base of fashion industry, social identity etc. While for negative factors (weaknesses and threats) is neglection by government, geo-location, pollution etc. After identification of all of these factors, even information from previous boards, I had been drawing a first scheme of strategic vision, where there were chosen several key areas of the district, along the historical urban axes (in red line). According to my strategic vision central street (Via Andrea Costa, Via Giovnni Pieraccioli and Via Lorenzo Ciulli start to be pedestrian, without any entrance of car, as it was several decades ago. This solution will stimulate to create commercial street with different functions, as shops, gelateria, offices etc. Moreover, except commercial functions, along central axe there are several leisure areas, as pavilion for young people, urban amphitheatre, greenery, community garden, urban furniture etc. The next important purpose is continuing historic axes closer to the Tuscan hills and railway, and deign there are new community and multifunctional centre, with museum of Galciana, coworking spaces, auditorium, bar, leisure spaces and art gallery. There was well thought also future entrance to the community centre, for metropolitan needs. As it was mentioned before, near Galciana there is new hospital of Prato, with metropolitan function, for entrance to the hospital there is special road, which will be continue to the site of community centre, to have one entrance for all metropolitan functions. Moreover, important addition is to involve to Galciana some contemporary systems, part of digital life. Digitalisation is new trend, without which will be impossible to live, probably even in next decade. I suppose to add an easy system, as smart buildings, WIFI along the central axe, sustainable system for buildings, community gardens etc. I believe, that, it will be possible to create harmonious urban environment, revive and adapt historical town with forgotten identity to the contemporary requirements of nowadays life.

9. ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT BACK TO THE FUTURE

TRIP IN TIME

I have been mentioned in my abstract, that all amalgamated analysis will transfer me to the architectural scale, to find correct architectural concept, with influence of contextual and existing situation. This board, which consist by 4 important graphical interpretation of concept should explain the main idea and concept in the clearest way! After historical analysis, about Galciana’s historical axe I decided to continue that axe to the side of the Tuscan hills and railway, which are the main reasons why Galciana blocked in the development. According to my concept, Galciana, city, village or settlement with 12000 of inhabitants, should develop, should think about future, with remembering of strong identity which already has. To implement idea of the future, I decide to divide my architectural project to three mental time, which are past, present and future. They can exist in the real life, just with collaboration. To interpret the past, I decide to have ramp with 5% of slope, by the which future guest will be able to enter to community centre. On the final part of the ramp they will have spiral shape staircase, which has to lead to present, ground level. All the ground level will have glass faced, which will be symbol of present, of transparency. From ground level, future visitors will have bridge, will connected with symbolic tower of future, which is 30 meters height, and exist by semi-transparently façade. As it is visible from the masterplan, future community centre well connects with existing environment, roads and general situation. There are special roads which connect project building with historical part of Galciana, there is new road which connect hospital with metropolitan function with community and multifunctional centre, in this was giving a chance to the new building to be New Metropolitan Landmark. Around the building there are community garden, with greenhouses. There community gardens, will be service by the all inhabitants.

MASTERPLAN 103

LET’S START OUR TRIP Finally, after all synthesis of analysis we arriving to the architectural level. Conceptually, underground level is representation of past, to which we arriving after 5% ramp. In general, all level has area of 1300 msq. There are several functional zones, and three independent entrance. Moreover, well thought emergency and evacuation system. On underground floor, we have auditorium for 100 guests, it is important to note, that regarding to the close location of metropolitan hospital, it is possible to use auditorium for various conference, presentation, also for hospital. The next, important function is community centre, where Galcanian, as well residents from close districts can come to work to big coworking space, with library, necessary furniture etc. Moreover, on the entrance part to the community centre, there are reception desks, library, wardrobe, and bar. Furthermore, there is pavilion of Galciana, which have to introduce history of Galciana to all visitors, on the end of which will be tower, as symbol of future. Conceptually, we can not have entrance to the tower from underground level (it is impossible achieve future from past, without present), that is why was planned little lake around the tower. Also, there are toilets, for men, women and disabled visitors, offices for managing and storages. As element of connection, between underground level and ground there are to staircase, interior and exterior, as well for disabled visitors there is elevator. On the façade there was using pigmented red concrete, glass façade, and semi-transparent polycarbonate panels. All metal element is by brass. .

UNDERGROUND FLOOR PLAN 104

105

FACADE 106

107

NOWADAYS If on the underground level we have a lot of functions and services, ground level represents by itself art platform, with space for exhibition and gallery, absolutely calm atmosphere, which also showing to visitors existing situation of Galciana. As other functions, there are two staircases interior and exterior. Moreover, there is bridge which pathing visitors to the tower levels. In general, we have 880 msq of space, 6 meters height ceiling and 20 meters of cantilever part. Well thought system of evacuation, with direct exit to the street.

LET’S ZOOM IN On the board of ‘’ Lets’ zoom in’’ I would like to speak about structure of cantilever part. Generally, all the building has mixed structure with pigmented concrete and steel structure. 10. OPINION OF RESIDENTS

“” I saw favorably the initiative of the young student Uzeyir Gasimov from Azerbaijan, who proposed a project concerning to the territory of Galciana. A perspective that I favorably favor for the beauty of the images, for the concreteness of the project and for the culture behind it. It represents a past, a present and above all a future that does not allow to foresee cultural absenteeism, but vivacious of views and perspectives. I ask You to represent it as a garrison of public utility and gathering services, as well as an element of completion of a territory already rich in works of art, but which needs an ulterior push to complete an urbanistic design that, starting from the future construction of the new Church of the Visitation, locality Trebbi, ends in a well-defined project that ends in the opposite part of Galciana as to give breath to an ideal connection between Church and Civil State. “

‘‘...utopia, ma sei giovane fai bene a sognare! Forse pero a Galciana ci sarebbe bisogno di un po piu di concretezza! .’’

‘‘...it is utopia, but you’re young, you’re right to dream! But maybe in Galciana we would need a little more concreteness! .’’

Working on this thesis project was extremely interesting and important for me and my future, since analyzing the historical context of an almost abandoned city and creating new services and functions according to the design of 21st century with respect all urban and historic analysis, allowed me to understand what cities of the future needs. During the course of my work, Professor Laura Andreini and Professor Giulio Giovannoni gave me tremendous support. I am immensely grateful to them for their help and manner of work, to look for new, alternative solutions, and to express my thoughts graphically. I am immensely grateful to my family, especially mom and dad, who supported me in the most difficult moments and were always with me, even if physically between us hundreds of kilometers. I am grateful to all my friends who were always lose to me for comment my work, namely, Elena Catalano, Roberto Cappuzzello and Lesya Mihailenko! Just with them I was able to finish my work alone and being still alive :) ! Deepest grateful to all residents of Galciana, with who we were working together during several months in developing of strategy vision, especially to Sauro Giuseppe Bessi, Gabriele Badiani and Leonardo Rosati.
