Courtney Read How long have you been modeling for? I’ve been signed with Chadwick for a year now. Before that I had slowly been getting into the industry for about 2 years.

What has been your favourite modeling project Which movies or TV shows do you find yourself so far? It would have to be shooting with Sivan Miller in Cape rewatching? Town, South Africa. When and why did you start sewing? Mum made me attend after school lessons in year 6; I wanted to die - but then I realized I could make ANYTHING I wanted. That prospect of ‘ANYTHING’ was pretty great to me. What’s the last garment you bought? Trousers by Dress Up.. I can’t even explain. What are your favourite designers? Giambattista Valli is a newy for me; amazing tailored womenswear that I can’t stop looking at. Other than that, it has always been Chloe and Stella (McCartney) for ultra feminine outfitting, Calvin Klein for lingerie. Another two designers I admire are Margaret Howell and melbourne designer Stephanie Downey. I find I relate to their aesthetics best. What is your favourite blue thing? The sky is pretty great. It’s the same everywhere you go. What does Grade offer to it’s customers? I try to start any design brief with ‘what do I like’, ‘what do my friends like to wear’, as well as keeping in mind the staple classics of womenswear. I always think about what I want from clothes in terms of aesthetic and function. Those are really important to me. ‘How do you want people to see you in your clothes, and what do you want your clothes to let you do?’ - thats why I think those classic womenswear pieces are so important. Donna Karen told us that with her essentials collection. Classics remain classic for a reason; they fulfill both aesthetic and function to a level that women relate to through out their lives. That’s my favourite part of fashion. Do you remember the first thing you made? What was it? I bought an 80s pattern and asked my sewing teacher to help me make it. It was a straight bodice with a gathered drop waist and no sleeves. It didnt fit me at all. I thought it was really great. What is your favourite fabric to wear? A tight angora jumper feels like its worth the expense. Plans for the future? More travel. I need to be in those scandanavian lands. Any upcoming collections? I’m working on a lingere line. Real basics; no lace and no padded bullshit. Find more from Grade here

MOISTURISER I’m always a little wary of rubbing new things on my face; it’s probably because I have sensitive skin and am extremely scared of any negative reactions (that generally do occur); but whatever the reason, new products and I don’t usually mix. So when I was given Mario’s Buttermilk Moisturiser to suss out; I was hesitant. Regardless, I rubbed that shit all over my face. I must say; I’m pretty impressed. It’s light, smells good and absorbs quickly so is great for when you’re in a rush. Made with carnation oil so it won’t block pores, Azulene which calms and soothes tired and sensitive skin and Allantoin as an anti-inflammatory. It’s pretty much perfect for anyone with sensitive or combination skin. Available @ Kit Cosmetics.
MOROCCAN OIL TREATMENT The idea of oil in your hair didn’t sound very appealing, until this wonder ingredient, Argan oil (the main ingredient in Moroccan Oil), appeared on the Western beauty market a few years back. Unlike other oils it doesn’t leave a residue or oily build up, and only the smallest amount is needed to achieve visible results. I have wavy hair that has been bleached to oblivion and so tends to get pretty frizzy after washing/ sleeping/any physical activity; but using Moroccan Oil enhances moisture and shine, making it easier to manage and less like a lions mane. Argan oil contains Vitamin E which reduces breakage and is said to stimulate hair growth, as well as providing UV protection. It can be used on wet and dry hair, before or after styling so it’s a great all in one product. And it smells pretty good too. Available @ www.moroccanoil.com

VAL TOKIC Your illustrations are full of intricate detailing and refining, do you think these aspects reflect your personality? Yes, I’m very meticulous in real life. I like to see how far I can take one idea. What are you currently studying? Double Major in Sound and Game Art/Design. So this isn’t your only creative outlet. Tell us what you’ve been working on lately. I’ve been working on a progressive metal album for the past 6 years. Where do you find the inspiration for your illustrations? Science Fiction concepts of progress and trans-humanism. Narrative extrapolations of what is likely to happen to civilizations such as ours. What is your favourite blue thing? Nitrogen What is your favourite material object? The Milky Way Galaxy Plans for the future? Conquer space. What is your favourite animal, and which 3 traits do you like best about them? The domestic dog. They listen to you, care about your interests and love to work and be part of a team. Every animal has its charm but nothing can beat the symbiotic relationship we have with canines. I don’t think we could have survived the last ice age or developed animal husbandry without dogs to help us track and guard. A Study of Birds Dying in their Natural Habitat by Mitchell King
It was mid-January and the winter had eaten its way through most of the woods. The harsh wind and snow
picked the remaining trees dry and left them without flesh, only alive at the core. From the ridge of nearby mountains they stuck out heavy grey on the white backdrop and a red figure trudged alongside the river. Ben walked heftily towards the trap he had placed by the rivers open throat. It was 2 miles from the road and he had covered most of the way by now. His lungs ached and pulled at each other and he felt as though he might give way and crack in the middle at any point, letting sawdust and broken ribs spill out and leaving him hollow. The trap was just out of sight but he grunted to a stop to feast at the crisp air a while. He was staying indefinitely in a cabin, a close drive away. In the past two months there, his arms had begun to fill his heavy flannel shirts .The gut he’d brought with him was lost somewhere on his daily trudges. A thick beard had eaten away the remaining youth from his face, and he rustled his fingers through it now as he stood to continue on the snowy path. Ben stumbled as he came upon a painfully beautiful sight. A red robin was caught in the snare, panicking as a white-tailed eagle picked and scratched at the wire cage. As Ben watched, it threw its wings and cawed deafeningly. It turned to take flight but found its feet caught in the wires. Ben was still fifty feet from the trap when he noticed and reached his fingers into his beard and scruffed slowly. It was too beautiful a creature to waste. Primal thrill welled up in him. His boots bit the snow underfoot as he took fresh steps on the bird. It swung its neck towards him and perched completely still. Its eyes were focused and Ben saw no fear in them. It hardly struggled as he approached, seizing a burlap sack from his backpack, and he wondered if the bird knew what was coming to it. He wondered if it could see the housefire raging in his eyes. He thrust the sack over the eagles head and swept it from its feet. The momentary struggle left the robin laying ripped apart in the trap. Once he’d made it to the road he lowered the bird to the ground a few feet from his car. He reached through the back window and picked up a short hose pipe and a cigarette from the center console. The bird was now wailing and kicking a few feet behind him in the snow. He dragged it to the rear of the car and pushed one end of the hose deep into the exhaust pipe and the other through the top of the sack. He then reached into the front seat, started the engine and switched into neutral. He wedged the steering wheel lock between the seat and the accelerator and took a step back. The car drew smoke up from its stomach and heaved it into the sack. Ben lit his cigarette and watched. The bag writhed and screeched as the bird inside swallowed lung upon lung of smog. A claw thrust through into the cold and Ben watched. The talon curled rhythmically against the white floor and Ben looked down at his own hooked fingers. They were curled against his chest. He exhaled hard, pulled the ring from his third finger and tossed it into the snow, the ring that had kept him in bed at night with a stranger. A stranger whose middle name he knew, a stranger who saw compromise as a good thing, a stranger who for 14 years insisted these two people were perfect, or at least good enough. He had hoped that somewhere along the next 14 or 20 or 35 he might actually have been convinced. “Four months...” Those two words cut every wet string that Ben imagined crawled from his chest to her mouth. He pulled hard at his cigarette but was caught mid-drag. A hot syrup drew itself up from his stomach. It took him to his hands and knees. It melted the snow beneath him. His teeth and fingers were red and velvety. He watched his trembling hands in the snow and listened to the ebbing screams of the eagle. Walking through the cabin door and breathing much too heavily, Ben dropped the sack into a freezer filled with the other lesser birds and some rodents. In the work bench was a drawer filled with orange containers marked “MR BENJAMIN R CONLON”. Ben opened it and scooped up the whites, yellows and reds he needed; his dailies and his weeklies and the one bi-weekly. He shoveled them into his mouth with a biscuit, crunched them down and gargled some milk from the bottle he’d left sitting out this morning. He shed his skin and collapsed into the old red velvet arm chair. His eyes had whittled down to less than an ember now. His breaths were short and had begun to rattle in the stale frozen air of his cabin. After ten minutes like this, Ben took to coughing violently. He swallowed down a mix of milk and brandy, took off his shirt and stepped heavily over to his work bench. Scratching his beard, Ben picked up his Piranta-Edge knife and got to work on an unfinished dear mount.

MOVIES Reviews by Amy Ruth Gibbs
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) Here is a lengthy 141 minute film, which when acquitted with your full attention is what I can wholly say to be a complete Masterpiece. A very big call to establish, yet directed by fine-eyed Stanley Kubrick and starring Kier Dullea as protagonist Dr. Dave Bowman; this film is magnificent in it’s every artistic way to present the human’s voyage in the chasm of our understandings of life. Magnificent in its picturesque shots, and aligned with an epic instrumental soundtrack that dominates the entire movement of the film; with very little dialogue to signify silence over the spoken word. ‘2001’ is divided into four major parts and is based around the amazing sci-fi writer Arthur C. Clarke’s short story ‘The Sentinel’; not the novel series of the same title for which it is often mistaken. The film plot builds itself around the human dealings of multiple enigmatic monoliths which they encounter across many periods of time. It’s an adventure of evolution with visuals that will pierce you. Hard to believe the age of this film, as it is a timeless piece with an aura of complete quality. (10/10)
Boys Don’t Cry (1999)
Is a tragic story based on true events, directed and written by Kimberly Pierce; co-written by Andy Bienen. The story follows the struggle of a transgendered teenager named Brandon Teena, played by Hilary Swank. Her story unfolds in the film as her preference to live life as male, nailing the identity almost completely and convincing others around her. It’s not until a few unfortunate events that her true biological factors are reluctantly revealed, and from that becomes an unwanted situation only turning for the worse. Heartbreaking and unfair, this independent drama film is worth a watch. 7/10
Blade Runner (1982)
An excellent 80’s cult sci-fi classic directed by Ridley Scott and written by Hampton Fancher and David Webb Peoples. Starring Harrison Ford as main character Rick Deckard, a blade runner who’s job is to hunt down manufactured artificial intelligence known as replicants, who appear identical to humans. The story is based on Philip K. Dick’s novel ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ and follows Deckard’s reluctant venture of his last detective assignment to hunt down recently escaped replicants, hiding in the future set dystopia of Los Angeles. The film raises culturally and morally complex questions, an entertaining watch. 8/10
Female Convict 701: Scorpion (1972)
A crazy Japanese film directed by Shunya Ito and written by Fumio Kônami and Hirô Matsuda. The film revolves around female prisoner Nami Matsushima played by the legendary Meiko Kaji. It is the beginning of a seven part sequel that follows the story of Matsu the Scorpion who finds herself in a terrible woman prison after being brutally set up by a corrupt detective she had mistakenly fallen in love with. Definitely some amazing shot’s with that great 70’s color you can only capture with film, along with some truly terrible sound effects and dubbing. But hey, it’s Japanese, with a super-babe-killer. Highly entertaining. 7/10

Reviews by Amy Ruth Gibbs
Seinfeld (1990-1998) Is a famous comedy series that lasted nine seasons throughout the 90’s. Created by Larry David and Jerry Seinfield, the show is set around New York comedian Jerry Seinfeld’s apartment, Upper West Side Manhattan. Accompanied by his diverse group of friends and acquaintances, the humor is built upon all their individual neurotic behaviors; including Jerry’s role of a fictionalized version of himself. Once hooked with the show’s underlying absurd, nihilistic humor and hilarious quotable characters, it’s hard to find an episode that doesn’t make you laugh. Most approvingly funny. (10/10)
JAM (2000)
Immediate warning - if dark comedy isn’t in your books, then don’t bother to try and endur this. But if you have a history, then get right on board. Jam is a brilliant, well cast show built upon multiple sketches, filled with disturbing dialogue and acquainted by most suitable imagery to excel the dark humor. Directed and written by wonderful English satirist Chris Morris, previously seen in ‘The Day Today’ and heard in the 90’s radio programme ‘On the Hour’. Jam contains episodes that can leave you feeling terminally ill after a few sketches, but all-in-all that’s it’s surrealistic approach, on top of some amazing ambient background tunes. 9/10
Black Mirror (2011-present)
Is a seriously well filmed British drama mini-series containing only three episodes within it’s first season, created by Charlie Brooker. Each episode has it’s own different reality, with a separate cast and setting. Even though different in many ways, each episode exhibits parallel themes in the sense that it triggers a disturbing uneasiness for our contemporary outlook on our modern and advancing world. A show which will leave you in a pensive, contemplative state, definitely worth viewing. 8.5/10

DISGRACE by J.M Coetzee (1999) Set in post-apartheid South Africa, Disgrace introduces Professor David Lurie, a divorced middle-aged man who is subsequently fired from his profession as a teacher of romantic poetry after sexual misconduct with a student. Lurie believes that he has ‘solved the problem of sex rather well’, with regular visits to a prostitute, until he runs into Melanie after a class and falls head over heels in lust with the lithe student. After a brief fling with the girl; in which Luries’ feelings weren’t reciprocated and instead Melanie was an apathetic subject to his advances, a complaint is lodged to the university and Lurie finds himself shame faced in front of the academic committee, and the local press. Given the chance to repent and feign guilt for his approaches onto the girl, he declines and instead accepts his termination with his pride seemingly kept in tact, although shunned by the community. Left unemployed, Lurie makes the decision to visit his daughter, Lucy, in rural South Africa, where she makes a living selling flowers and vegetables. Life on the farm is simple, but Lurie and his daughter clash over certain subjects, particularly Petrus; the farm hand also living on the property who seems to believe the land belongs to him. However their world is quickly turned upside down after a violent incident leaving Lurie frightened for Lucy’s, and his own, safety on the farm; and the division between races becomes all too clear to Lurie once the newcomers are segregated from the community due to fear and embarrassment. Disgrace is beautifully written, a novel that depicts difficult subjects in a way that enthrals the reader to want to know more. Definitely worth the read! 8/10
A Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwell (1985) “A Handmaids Tale” is a story set in a dystopian United States of America, called the Republic of Gilead. The Republic was created by a Christian fundamentalist group that assassinated the president, and set to dominate and suppress women’s rights, beginning by taking their jobs and cancelling bank accounts; only allowing the men to have access and control of money and living. As the group gains further control over the states, a hierarchy is developed in which fertile young women are forcibly employed by ‘commanders’ and their barren wives, to become ‘handmaids’, who are raped by the commanders; the officers of Gilead nearing the top of the hierarchal scale. The handmaids only purpose is to reproduce, they are required to keep themselves covered at all times with habit-style clothing. Status depends solely upon gender and fertility, and once the handmaids are unable to procreate they are deemed unnecessary burdens which are disposed of. The text follows Offred (a name given to her by the Gilead, literally meaning ‘of Fred’), a woman who had her daughter taken from her before being forced to become a handmaid. She understands that the republic is not a place for women to be, however she complies with rules and regulations for fear of losing her life if she doesn’t. That is until she meets Luke, a man working for the commander who also rebels against the constraints of the society, and who wants to help her gain her independence back. “A Handmaids Tale” is an interesting, but brutal, novel of how society could turn if a misogynistic force was to take control. 9/10
T
he Saint Peter of Earth: too much of a glutinous pig that he doesn’t even realise that the gates of heaven are obstructed by his disgusting inhuman mass. Nevertheless the Saint Peter Police Pig is still far from immobile, but soon he will be. Humans ever weakening grip around the voluptuous wrist of the riot police will be completely compromised once the monetary system takes these men under its wing. Riot police will soon be rubbing shoulders with NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation), Pharmaceutical companies, ANCD (Australian National Council on Drugs) and many more, as Pig populations reaches an all-time high. Pigs force the monetary system to make decisions instead of humans. Instead of using a logical scientific approach to solving problems, we do whatever it is that the monetary system rewards. Inviting the monetary system to make decisions in the place of men has been the single biggest mistake ever made by man. It makes decisions on all levels - as high as government and, as low as personal levels, but throughout it makes Pigs of us all. No man would ever come to the conclusions this decision making system arrives at. Only something so inhumane could decide that: NATO was to drop explosives on civilians, pharmaceutical companies were to withhold effective medication, and governments were to pay teachers so poorly. It will be the same decision making process that will elect to police us like children, discipline us like dogs and value us only tools. As surveillance technologies become more popular alongside the privatisation of prisons and popularisation of sometimes lethal “non-lethal weapons, man will find it impossible to free
himself of the ill thinking of his fathers. As this monetary system has decided that it is law that the powerful stay powerful and the weak stay weak, forever perpetuating the status quo. With protesting turning out to be one of the only industries not fated to destruction by technological unemployment the system will quickly turn its attention to this important sector. Not only birthing a Gestapo like paramilitary force to keep freedom fighters unconscious or in solitary confinement, which is effectively murder, but also by continuing to intentionally misguide man’s efforts to help humanity through change with false charities and initiatives. A more than perfect example of this is the Kony 2012 initiative, which wrongfully redirected mans energy from a very humane direction to a disgusting pseudo-charitable sub industry of the capitalist market whose main goal is to thwart anything humane for monetary gain. Freedom will die as governments begin to subsidise “Non-lethal weapon” manufacture to keep the masses employed only because the monetary system will dictate so. The new paramilitary Gestapo police force of Pigs will be called to deal with any and every known antiestablishment conversation in a desperate attempt to keep these men occupied, and henceforward paid, because the monetary system is largely happy as long as about 30% of the population is getting paid. To this date the most impressive magic trick is the act that turns a man into a Pig. Tragically, it’s one of the simplest and widely used tricks, as only Pigs do what is illogical and immoral in the name of the monetary system. Pigs can be smelt out almost anywhere you go; salesmen acting like strippers and bouncers that act like criminals, the world smells more and more like a farm. It’s these pigs that would proudly take off their name badges and slide their hands down black woollen sleeves, bring their shoulder boards to their shoulders and button their lapels together so that the entire world can see the “ ” either side of their chin. Then the saddest thing in the wold would happen, they would think to themselves, “I’m just doing my job,” as they will begin to shoot civilians in the streets. Oink Oink.
