Ho ho hos! It's our second annual Jancember double issue, which means you'll have two full months to immerse yourself in the fabulousness that is Miss Kylie Minogue! That's right, the Impossible Princess, my personal queen of pop (sorry Madge) spoke with us about her latest live CD & DVD set, Aphrodite Les Folies Tour 2011. We also got a chance to catch up with Berlintransplant and fellow Kylie mega-fan DJ Dickey Doo, who is currently working with everyone from Peaches to R.E.M. Our travel correspondent Charlie David took a much needed break to bring us an interview with model/athlete/designer/ HIV activist Jack Mackenroth, who both educates and titillates. December 1st is World AIDS Day and Mackenroth is truly an inspiration. If you're reading this before December 24th, make a point to go down to the Vancouver Playhouse and see the amazing production of La Cage aux Folles. We spoke with La Cage's Associate Director Cameron Mackenzie, as well as his gorgeous "sister" Isolde N. Barron. What a pair. That's it for this year boys and girls. Keep your eyes peeled January 1st for our very special Best of 2011 V-Rag featuring interviews with Ace of Base, Grace Jones, Rick Mercer and Mike Ruiz! Xoxo! January is gonna be a real drag. For the 4th year, RuPaul’s Drag Race is set to make its premiere just after the New Year with a whole new budget, and a bunch of new queens. Some are already famous, some have major careers, and for the first time in two seasons, we’ve got a major breath of fresh air in the cast. Two in fact! One thing that I’ve noticed this year is that there are quite a few queens from Chicago. That’s neither here nor there for me, but I’m wondering if we’re going to get a different kind of winner this season, or if we’ll get the same tall skinny dark fierce queen that we’ve gotten the past three seasons... Let’s meet the girls shall we? Alisa Summers @AlissaSummers Age: 23 Tampa, FL
Chad Michaels @ChadMichaels1 Age: 40 San Diego, CA
Alissa hails from Tampa, FL. After creeping her profile on Facebook, I noticed that she’s giving off a major Alexis Mateo vibe. Is she gonna make it to top three?
Chad is already known through the US as one of the top Cher impersonators in the world. Seriously, he’s big time. Is this gonna give him an edge during competition?
Kenya Michaels @Kenya_Michaels Age: 21 Dorado, Puerto Rico
Lashauwn Beyond @LaShauwnBeyond Age: 21 Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Our first queen from Puerto Rico in this season! I don’t know, ever since Nina Flowers, they’ve all paled in comparison. Hopefully she can spice it up a bit.
THE. BEST. NAME. Honestly, if this show were judged on name alone, LaShauwn would be in the finals. LaShauwn has a history with pageants, so we’ll see what she brings to the table.
milan @DwayneMilan Age: 36 New York, NY Born in North Carolina, living in New York City! I’m not sold on Milan, I kinda found her a bit boring. She doesn’t jump out at me, but I’ve been wrong before.
6
Phi Phi O'Hara @PhiPhiOhara Age: 25 Chicago, IL Bad boob contour, but she's well spoken and can build a queen from the ground up. I really respect that. She reminds me of JujuBee a lot!
V-rag
Do you recognize Willam? I do! From LA, she’s been on a bunch of TV shows, a bunch of Jessica and Hunter videos, and she’s all over the place. Fishy, bitchy, catty… just what we love on TV. Dida Ritz @HelloDida Age: 25 Chicago, IL This is just one of three queens from Chicago. She refers to herself as a mixture of Kimora Lee Simmons, Beyonce and Carrie Bradshaw. That’s a pretty eclectic mix. Latrice Royale @LatriceRoyale Age: 39 South Beach, FL Here’s our first BBW! She’s the only one who mentioned circuit parties, and you know how much I LOVE a circuit queen. I watched her on Youtube, she’s pretty sickening! Sharon Needles @Sharon_Needles Age: 29 Pittsburgh, PA This isn't Sharon Needles from Project Runway, this one is from Pittsburgh! She is always in character, always hilarious and a welcome to this show. My favourite this season, she’s so completely different. Jiggly Caliente @JigglyCaliente Age: 30 Queens, NY Jiggly is from NY, she's friends with Sahara Davenport (season two) and Manila Luzon (season three), and to me she always sounds so bored. A little energy please!
The Princess @TheDragPrincess Age: 32 Chicago, IL Bald! No hair! Thank you Jesus! Finally something different to the show. This is breath of fresh air number one! I am living for The Princess. Madame LaQueer @MadameLaQueer Age: 29 Carolina, PR Another great name! Her intro interview made me laugh, she’s a bit busted... But I got a major chuckle from her. RuPaul's Drag Race Season 4 airs every Monday at 10pm on OutTV starting January 2012. www.outtv.com www.logotv.com

irst off, I have to say this interview would have been a lot less terrifying if I weren't such a crazed Kylie Minogue fan. When I was given 12 hours notice that I'd be chatting with the all-time Queen of Pop (and yes, she does have the title now), it was definitely a mix of excitement and pure terror. Luckily Kylie is just as sweet and approachable as she seems in concert. And it's her latest world tour, Aphrodite Les Folies, that has us all gagging for more. With the release of her London show on DVD/BluRay and double CD album, everyone that missed one of her nearly 80 tour dates can watch it at home. Kylie adds "we actually filmed it in 3D. So if you have a 3D TV, you're in luck." And we should be so lucky! The concert and tour is an amazing spectacle, a $25 million stage production that marks Kylie's first mega pop tour, one to rival the Britneys and the Gagas. Riffing on the Aphrodite theme of her last album, the stage abounds with Greek gods, armoured sweaty men, and more water features than Kath & Kim's townhouse yard. The live show even featured a "splash zone" in which you could pay for the privilege of a towel and a poncho. "They want to get wet. Go figure." I asked the pint sized Princess about the styling of her latest venture, and she agrees that this is the most extravagant tour to date. "[Aphrodite] is a great launch pad for the visuals. Greek mythology, over-the-top, classical sculpture, Fellini films… And the movie Ziegfeld Folies – I love that movie and that time in film. My show has some of that, so we called it 'Aphrodite Les Folies'. William Baker and I thought we were both mad for doing this." It was indeed a risky venture. In a market which sees most tours suffering financially, coupled with an album that wasn't exactly a commercial success, putting on an expensive
10
world tour was a tough sell. "There’s always one difficulty or another in this business. Currently it’s selling tickets." So how did Kylie manage to make her biggest tour happen with an album that featured some of her lowest charting tracks in years? "I put a lot of money into this show, my pockets are empty… But you can see where it all goes. The dancers, the choreography, the set decoration... It's all there." And it turns out that this gamble paid off big time. The tour was the 6th biggest of 2011, earning over $50 million worldwide. Yay Kylie! After so much work, I was curious about the behind-the-scenes of a mammoth like Aphrodite Les Folies. What does it take to prepare for a tour of this magnitude? "Between the rehearsals, the preparation and the actual tour, it was overall the better part of a year. Wow a year..." Watching the spectacle unfold, it seems impossible to think that this was done several times a week in countless countries and continents. But then again, she is known as the Impossible Princess. "Backstage there's always a little bit of drama. Sometimes the quick change is interesting since all of the venues are so different. I come off stage and someone has to literally push me in the right direction, otherwise I don't know what's going on. And I have eight costume changes!" Despite all the craziness and confusion behind-the-scenes, the tour was hailed by critics as one of the most intimate and classy affairs of its kind. Not to put down Lady Gaga or even Madonna, but pay attention ladies... This is how it's done. The thing that really sets her apart from other pop divas is her humanity. She was quick to remind me that as Aphrodite Les

Folies was being released, another much more personal milestone was being celebrated; five years free of cancer. "It feels great, we had a small celebration and brought out the bubbly." Kylie's 2006 breast cancer scare was a very public one. The paparazzi hounded the pop star, but Kylie always played role of the fighter, never showing a sign of weakness. Even when photos of a fragile and sick Minogue were splashed on tabloid covers, Kylie maintained that she would beat the disease. I asked her how she stayed so brave during the ordeal. "You might have seen the bravery… I stayed indoors and it was my family that supported me through that dark time." Kylie's family has always been her rock, from fellow pop star sister Dannii Minogue to her parents, who she cites as her greatest inspiration. Another source of inspiration? Her hunky Spanish boyfriend, Andres Velencoso, 10 years her junior. The beefy model joined her every night on tour – he appeared on screen wearing gold underwear during the song "Cupid Boy". "He kindly agreed to be filmed for the screens in a song called and Willy [Baker] and I tried to get him into a fig leaf... And Andres wasn't having any of it. But we did get him into little pants!" Damn, that means all the man meat on display wasn't exclusively for the gays. Although Kylie admits without her gay fans, she wouldn't have a career. Duh. "There are a lot of gay fans. And in a strange way, I feel like I'm home. It's very comforting to see the gay fans, and they,
12
along with the rest of my audience, help me to try and deliver the goods. And I just want to say that my gay audience, back when times were not the easiest for me, just showed so much support. It was like having an army behind me." An army of Kylie, I'd be the first to enlist! After a year touring, you'd think Kylie would be exhausted, but she sounds bubbly and excited for the future. Of course, I had to ask her what all impatient greedy fans want to know... Is she working on a new album? "I don’t know how soon I would rush in to doing another pop album," she sighs. "I’m definitely looking into opportunities of collaborations or different performances that will keep fans satisfied, keep my interest up. Definitely I'd love to do acting. I don't where or how... But you know, I'm scratching around and seeing what's available there." One of the projects she's been musing about is an all-acoustic tour featuring B-sides, covers and reinterpretations of her hits. That's our Kylie, always changing, always staying fresh and reinventing herself in new exciting ways. She adds "I remember being asked about reinvention for so many years… And I always found it kind of a difficult question because it comes so naturally to me. And it's more about growth and change than it is about 'I'm going to reinvent myself and go from black to white'." Even after her next reincarnation, to her fans Kylie will always be our Aphrodite. ickey Doo is a familiar name on the West Coast (and especially in Vancouver) when it comes to his legendary DJ career and music production throughout the '90s and 2000s. Now he is blowing up in Europe. For a year and a half now, Mr. Doo and his Dix Mix Studios have become ex-pats living in the bustling cultural epicenter called Berlin, Germany. Dickey fell in love with the city easily, remixing, producing, DJing and now living and working it full force! As I visit, he shows me the sites and ways of the Berliner... Let's hop into his colourful Bohemian world. How is life these days? Very very exciting! It's awe-inspiring how much goes on here, and also very hard to keep up on it all! There is always something going on and somewhere to go, many times over, pretty much every night. I think the hardest part is narrowing down what to do and having the energy to do it all. What gives Berlin such a cool factor?
14
Well, aside from the fact that freaks from all over the globe have kind of assembled here, I especially love the overall rejection to the corporate brainwashing of what is supposed to be popular. The rules are written in a city like this,

not duplicated. There is a ton of serious talent here and people that really know what they're doing. Competition is fierce, which keeps you at the top of your game. It's incredibly free here. Clubs stay open for 3 days, you can stay out till 9 a.m. any night of the week, drink in public, smoke weed in bars, and people are very respectful and behaved. It's very civilized. How is the club scene in Berlin? The club scene is huge and incredible. There is a ton going on pretty much all the time, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. It really never stops. There are many nights where there are so many choices, it's insane. The clubs and bars are not contained to any one area, so you can do a lot of traveling in the course of a night. Musically it's incredibly smart. People really know music, and I am not talking pop charts. Underground music prevails no matter the style, and you would never hear radio fare at a club unless it was stated that it's a "pop" night. They do have a few, for the tourists haha. Tell us about your latest forthcoming remixes. Well I just finished R.E.M. and Peaches' single "Alligator Aviator Autopilot Antimatter" with Larry Tee and A3. Warner Bros. s the first television personality since Pedro Zamora to be vocal about his HIV status, Jack Mackenroth has quickly become the most visible, out HIV+ advocate and educator in the country... if not the world. With the release of his 2012 calendar, he hopes to raise both money and awareness for AIDS research, and to show through his photographs that a person living with HIV can be in top physical form, healthy and sexy. All proceeds from the calendar will go to amfAR to help find a cure for AIDS. Mackenroth has been living with the disease for 22 years. Designer, athlete and HIV/AIDS activist and educator Jack Mackenroth has had the privilege of shooting with some of the best photographers in the business. Each month of the 15 month calendar will feature a different photographer with a very different style. Jack is a role model to many people in the HIV community and a fitness model that many aspire to emulate. I recently rang up the handsome activist for some coffee talk after placing my own calendar order. Bright, comical and driven Jack left me impressed. What’s the most exciting development recently from your perspective with HIV Research? I think the tangible reality that a cure is a possibility is very exciting. Many of us have heard about the man who was cured with stem cell transplants from a woman who just happened to be immune to HIV. I hear there are a lot of stem cell studies going on now as a result. To me that's a game changer. It's not just about staying alive, it’s about eradicating AIDS. You’re donating the profits from the calendar to amfAR; why has amfAR inspired such generosity? I've just always thought amfAR was a progressive, global organization that has been able to motivate a lot of people to get involved. I wanted to pick an organization that was not localized to one particular area but benefited the entire HIV community. Plus I loved Elizabeth Taylor.
You’re a successful fashion designer, athlete, model and activist. Was it a difficult decision to be public about being positive? Not at all. I've been positive for 22 years and I had been public and open about it for many years long before my appearance on Project Runway. I also knew that the HIV community was severely stigmatized and needed a public role model that they could see was living a happy successful life. Do you still face stigma about being positive in your life? Of course. People are wildly uneducated on the subject. I know there are people who wouldn’t even think of dating an HIV+ person. And of course there are the religious crazies that think it's god's wrath for being blessed with amazing taste and flair. They are laughable. So that's what I do – laugh. However for the most part it doesn't bother me. What message would you like to convey to a young person who may have recently found out they are positive? First of all don't freak out. It's not the death sentence it once was. There are a lot of people just like you who are doing really well. Find a good doctor that you trust and educate yourself. Get your blood work done regularly and make sure your viral load stays undetectable. There are so many great treatment options now, hopefully some of the fear is gone. And don't be ashamed. You are still amazing and deserving of love. It’s no one's fault. And ask for help and support if you need it. Tell me about Making Lemonaids. Making Lemonaids is the memoir I am almost finished writing that is a no-holds barred glimpse into the most outrageous parts of my life. Of course I talk about my HIV diagnosis and struggles but it’s not an HIV-centric book. It's been a hoot to write. I'm sure I will win a Pulitzer. V Jack Mackenroth's autographed calendar is on sale now. All proceeds benefit amfAR. www.amfar.org www.jackmackenroth.com/blog

ne of these things is not like the other... Most people will recognize Isolde N. Barron as the Queen of East Van, 2010's Entertainer of the Year, a fixture at Queer Bash or the star of her weekly Cobalt show Apocalypstick. For the past few years, Isolde has built up a small empire of drag royalty and has one of the most loyal fan bases in Vancouver. Let's face it, if you can find a group of fiercely devoted followers in the gay community, you must be doing something right! But the man behind the femme fatale isn't as widely in the public eye. I'm not talking about her fiancé, fellow drag diva Peach Cobblah, but Cameron Mackenzie, Isolde's talented alter ego. Some may be surprised to learn that Mackenzie is also comfortable directing the attention, as well as receiving it. With an impressive career directing productions of What a Drag!, Tiny Replicas, Nelly Boy, Jocasta, My Funny Valentine, and Whale Riding Weather, Cameron is the founder and artistic director of Vancouver's Zee Zee Theatre. It's Cameron's current work that's garnering him even more critical praise, as Associate Director of the Vancouver Playhouse's production of La Cage aux Folles. I had the pleasure of catching up with both Cameron Mackenzie and Isolde N. Barron to get their take on such different careers. Can I say I killed two Birdcages with one stone? 5 QUESTIONS FOR ISOLDE N. BARRON Hello fabulous! Great to chat with you. What has been keeping you busy and beautiful these days? Being beautiful keeps me busy darling! I've also started a monthly queer film series at the Rio Theatre on Broadway called The Friends of Dorothy. We screen an older queer classic with a newer one in a similar theme. There's my weekly show every Sunday at the Cobalt – on, I might add, the only day off I get from working with my girls and the lovely Maxy poo at the Playhouse.

by Cole Johnston Apocalypstick has been even more popular than ever before, why do you think people are embracing it so much? Any secrets for upcoming Apocalypstick nights? We have gone to a new format with two guests every week. I have loosened my grip on the reigns by letting East Van's Hip Hop sensation Peach Cobblah host once a month with her HipHopAlypstick which gives me that time to catch up on my gardening and macrame. You helped brainchild the upcoming production of La Cage aux Folles. What can we all expect from that? Well I had a delicate tasteful hand in ensuring the authenticity of the production. Max [Reimer] and I conceived of a way in which this production could be done using the talented Queens from our very own community. I hear your lovely fiancé Peach Cobblah will also be in the show? Yes, I never leave home without her... Actually she did a fabulous job of auditioning for us and in fact has many years acting experience. She plays Hanna from Hamburg - a dominatrix with a penchant for whip cracking - I approve! What do you think of the Associate Director Cameron Mackenzie? Any dirt? Oh he is so handsome! I mean for a man of his age... I usually don't go for older men... unless there is wealth to back them up of course... but for an old artist he's quite lovely! 5 QUESTIONS FOR CAMERON MACKENZIE Congratulations on your upcoming Associate Director position for La Cage aux Folles! What personal stamp are you planning to put on this Vancouver production? I think what will make our production shine is our attention to the heart of the story. What I always hone in on as a director is the beauty of the truth of any moment.

VANRGAZine #29 You're no stranger to stage direction… What have been some highlights of your career thus far? Yes... I run a theatre company called Zee Zee Theatre. I think the highlight of my career was founding the company and producing my all time favourite play – Whale Riding Weather – a script I had wanted to direct for many years. It was our first show and we pulled off a full scale professional production without any government assistance. How did you become involved with the Vancouver Playhouse? The artistic Managing Director Max Reimer actually approached me because of my work with Zee Zee Theatre and the Queen of East Van Isolde N. Barron. After La Cage aux Folles finishes its run, what do you plan for Zee Zee Theatre? We are gearing up for our 4th production. A new script by prolific Vancouver playwright Dave Deveau called Lowest Common Denominator that explores gay intergenerational relationships. What do you think of East Van's Queen Isolde N. Barron? I hear you two are close. Is your fiancé jealous? Isolde is like a grandmother to me... Don't tell her that, she imagines herself more of a little sister! V La Cage aux Folles runs until Dec. 24th at the Vancouver Playhouse. Check out Isolde N. Barron's Apocalypstick every Sunday at the Cobalt. www.vancouverplayhouse.com www.zeezeetheatre.ca

o I was taking a twirl through Scruff today. There, I've said it! I fessed up! Despite being really bad at finding a boyfriend, I never stop trying and will even chip away at my dignity, bit by bit, trying to find one by any means possible. You have to kiss a lot of toads to find a prince right? For those who don't know, Scruff is a gay men's hook up application that boys with iPhones use to find out exactly(ish) how far away the man you are looking at, flirting with and or showing your ass and penis to, is. Whilst there, I was treated to several hundred pictures of some very handsome guys, some rather unattractive fellas, pics of just men's torsos (queen please!), bulges in underwear, ass cracks and some rather desperate pics of guys with their dogs (will the dog be joining us?). I was baffled by profiles of guys wearing nothing but a jockstrap, a leather vest and their best bedroom eyes whose bios indicated that they were "partnered" and only "looking for friends" and (ahem) "workout buddies".
I read a bunch of the profile bios that boys had created which are designed to let other guys know what you do, who you are into and what you are looking for. Some were very sweet. Many just want what we all want... someone to share their lives and love with. Some were a little desperate, and many were quite quite rude (it's fine that you are not attracted to men of Chinese or African decent, but saying "no Asians or blacks' depicts you in a way that speaks volumes about why you are still single). All in all, I learned that almost everyone is looking for a well hung, masculine muscle boy who enjoys long walks, going to movies and working out. Best of luck with that! Then, a recurring theme kept popping up. In bios, and while chatting, a lot of guys made it perfectly clear that they were only looking for "clean" guys. I did not get it at first. I took umbrage in the fact that someone might think I have dirty pits or dirt under my nails. I suddenly realized that "dirty" meant HIV positive. Really guys? Dirty? HIV/AIDS is as much a part of this community as Grindr, Gaga and Glee. All of us know people who are HIV positive and most of us, weather we or even they realize it or not, have slept with someone positive. The millions of HIV positive gay men and women in the world are part of our family and our tribe. To demean our fellow gay brothers in this way is behavior I thought was saved for right wing evangelical homophobes. Yet, literally hundreds of guys use the term. December 1st is World AIDS Day. Do better, open up your heart, be your better self and always remember... if a guy asks you if you are clean?. He is the one who is dirty. V Check out more of Joan-E's Rag on www.v-rag.com

Let's get to know this week's gay: Philip! Facial hair or clean shaven? On me, always stubble. I look fourteen years old when I shave. I love a little 5 o' clock shadow on guys, too. Goals for 2012? I want to begin the first stages of world domination and start doing Moksha yoga again. Body hair or bald eagle? Body hair‌ but can we please keep her a little more trim than natural? You can buy clippers at the drugstore, y'all. Facebook or Twitter? Twitter! (@PhilipTetro) New Years Resolution? To be more grateful, gracious, and giving. Fave gay icon and why? Â

Madonna is the Queen of the entire Universe as far as I'm concerned. She's a powerful, hard-working, beautiful, strong, talented, creative genius who has never stopped believing in herself or her art. She was the first person
to teach me that being different is good, and I'm forever thankful to her for that. What is currently on your iPod? Florence and The Machine, Rihanna, Drake, Lana Del Rey, Janet, Enrique Iglesias, Cher, Henry Mancini and Justin Nozuka. Fave fashion designer? David Robert, our good friend Jason and I walked by Marc Jacobs in New York City, so Marc Jacobs. He wanted us (not really). If you had a super power what would it be? I would love to be able to turn straight guys gay for just one night. I may or may not have already started developing this power. Best advice to give a youngster for coming out? You are fucking amazing! The ones who judge you are more insecure than you are. Love every part about yourself and what you believe in. The people that make your life hard now won't matter in six months anyway! V New episodes of 1 girl 5 gays air every Friday at 11pm on MTV Canada. www.mtv.ca www.logotv.com

he media constantly portrays domestic violence as a heterosexual experience. The terms 'domestic violence' and 'violence against women' have seemingly become interchangeable. As a result, people who interact with victims frequently are unaware of the existence of domestic violence in the gay community. The surprising fact is that the percentage of domestic violence in queer relationships is higher than in heterosexual partnerships. Without education, many gay men may stay in dangerous or lifethreatening situations due to the inability to label their experience. For this reason, professionals who interact with victims need to be aware of the reality of domestic violence within the gay community. 1 in 4 gay men have experienced domestic violence; 1 in 7 gay men have been in physically violent relationships; only 1% of gay men list the police as a resource for gay male victims. Domestic violence in all intimate relationships is essentially about power and control, irrespective of the label used to describe the relationship. It occurs when one partner tries to control, dominate, or have power over the other by using psychological and/or physical violence. There are many forms that domestic violence may take. Physical Hitting, punching, slapping, pushing. Sexual Rape, indecent behavior without consent. Verbal Put downs, name calling. Financial Withholding access to money, not allowing you to earn your own money. Social Isolation from friends and family. Many people who are victims of domestic violence say that it is often not the physical abuse which hurts most but the fear and emotional
HEaLT + wellness by Jason Keller
pain inflicted on them by their partners. Violence may not be perpetrated directly on a person; but also on their pets, family, and property. ‘Indirect abuse’ is still abuse and those that use it are committing an act of domestic violence. So what should you do if you are reading this article and you realize you are a victim of abuse? This is where it gets tricky. I have written this article largely out of frustration with the lack of awareness and lack of resources available for queer individuals experiencing domestic violence. There is a need within our community to pull together to develop safe shelter, assistance, and support groups for individuals who do not feel comfortable accessing safe houses for women, homeless shelters, or fast paced medical environments. The most important thing is to seek help from someone you trust. Obtain trusted medical supports, if necessary, and establish safety with this person. Domestic abuse is a crime. You should know that the Vancouver Police Department has been working hard with community stakeholders in educating their officers and creating a diverse work force. The VPD is likely to take your concern seriously and make an effort to assist you should you reach out to the police. British Columbia has a very helpful victim’s assistance program which the VPD can assist you to access. The next step may be to seek counselling. Counselling, in the face of domestic violence can help victims gain perspective and hope, a healthy view of their future selves, build resilience, and take care of subtle but important internal factors such as acceptance, and optimism. There are services within our community which are making an effort to create safe and accessible medical, counselling, and support services. If you don’t find the services you need here, you will certainly find friendly faces and good advice. FILm:notes Hugo D: Martin Scorsese
Margin Call D: JC Chandor
Hugo Cabret is an orphan who lives a secret life inside the walls of a Parisian train station, meticulously tending to the many intricate clocks. From his hidden home, he observes the minutiae of humanity in the station whilst trying to fathom the mystery of a mechanical man left behind by his late father. His investigations lead to a complex relationship with a bitter old timer who turns out to be the father of narrative cinema, George Méliès (a superb Ben Kingsley). Hugo is a quiet, lovely marvel; at once a stylish tale of childhood wonder, an intimate love letter to the movies and a deeply existential allegory. This is legendary director Martin Scorsese’s first PG movie in 18 years, and it instantly stands alongside his all-time greats. Film lovers will fall head over heels for its affectionate, whimsical charms. Film geeks will be seduced by the stunning recreation of some of early cinemas most defining moments. And aficionados of art and beauty will be blown away by the knockout production design and the strong message about the preservation of art history. Unlike the gimmicky use of 3D in almost every other movie, Hugo utilizes the method beautifully to enhance its story and themes. This is easily the most effective use of the medium since Avatar. In a time when vapid dross like Alvin and the Chipmunks and The Smurfs post astronomical box office numbers, here’s hoping this excellent movie finds its audience. Essential holiday viewing.
Hours before the great financial crash of 2008 is when Margin Call takes place. A fantastic cast that includes Kevin Spacey, Demi Moore, and Stanley Tucci play various members of a brokerage firm that stay up all night trying to figure out what the hell to do in lieu of some terrifying numbers that Tucci’s character crunched, predicting the looming crash. All signs point to a great film, but for some reason it didn’t wow me. Perhaps because Canada wasn’t affected that badly by the crash I can’t relate. Perhaps my brain has been permanently wired for the Hollywoodization of film, and the stark realism of the movie disappointed my pleasure centre. Perhaps it simply pales to the turbulent Occupy Movement happening right now as a result of those times. I don’t know. So the movie as a whole didn’t wow me, but there were some nice finer points. All the characters are fantastic. They weren’t just a bunch of one-dimensional greedy financial geniuses. Each character has different reasons to be on Wall Street. Some crave money; some status; some just love the thrill of trading. All this is revealed in well crafted dialogue. Director JC Chandor also finds the beauty in an office in the sky, the hard lines of desks and doors complement the soft glow of city lights. And even though I longed for it, there was no explosive drama, crazy fights, or secret twists. Just plain old reality. Clearly the problem is me, and not the film.

Florence & The Machine ceremonials
Traci Lords last drag
Sneaky Sound System from here...
by Pop Trash Addict Mike
by Mumbles
Did someone scream power ballad? Because that is exactly what Ceremonials is: one brilliant album of big bold power ballads. Florence Henderson basically proved she’s a powerhouse diva last year at the Grammys when she belted out Aretha Franklin’s "Think" at top volume. In her newest release, she’s channeling the best and brightest of '80s brit pop, namely one Annie Lennox. Every single song is chocked full of thundering toms, synthy strings and, yes, full choral arrangements, along with some great African tribal sounds. Lucky for us Henderson has the vocals to back—ahem—front them. You’d think after hearing two or three giant songs like these in a row you’d be sick of the album. But no, it just gets better and better. I’d like to name some specific tracks but I can’t seem to choose favourites here. I was worried that Henderson’s post-Dog Days launch into the spotlight (thanks Julia Roberts) might take her in the wrong direction. Nope! With Ceremonials Florence has made a loyal fan of me.
Traci Lords is back with new music! A stunning turn of events that will no doubt overshadow Madonna's comeback and force poor Rihanna into retirement. The underage-porn-star-turnedcult-actress is a true underground pop icon. Her 1995 opus "1000 Fires" remains one of my favourite dance albums of that decade and has rightly won a loyal following due to the 43-year-old's unusually dark and depressing lyrics. "Fallen Angel", in particular, holds up as brilliantly evocative anthem. One listen and I'm back holding a glow stick at a rave party! Traci gave up on music in the mid-'90s to concentrate on acting but has released a couple of singles over the years, including a cute interpretation of Missing Persons' "Walking In L.A." – a song which Margo also covered last year. After a four year hiatus, the star of John Waters' Cry-Baby is back with "Last Drag". The track finds Traci in an unusually mainstream mood with a catchy pop/rock chorus and amazing smoking metaphors. I love it and am pleased to hear that it's already a #46 Billboard club smash.
Anyone who is familiar with SSS knows that their albums play out like a house party in full throttle. With barely a moment to catch ones breath, the hooks and beats come fast and furious, fused together by Connie Mitchell's infectious vocals. With the bands third album, the recipe remains primarily the same with one notable new ingredient – restraint. Though the band sounds just as polished and pop-tastic as ever, the hooks may not beat you over the head as they have in the past. Is this a bad thing? Not at all. These songs are still catchy as hell, Connie's harmonies still as sublime and the instrumentation provided by band mate Black Angus are just as expertly produced as ever. Songs like "The Colours", "1984" and "Remember" are immediate standouts while the rest of the album demonstrates a kind of subtlety that is rarely found in pop music. On From Here To Anywhere, SSS's raging house party is nowhere near over. As the night rolls on, only your closest friends remain up and still dancing. And that's when the real fun begins.

BOOK:notes At Home bill bryson
The Man Who Folded Himself by david gerrold
I’m a Bill Bryson fan; his books are laughout-loud funny and incredibly informative. His new offering, At Home: A Short History of Private Life, is no different. His aim was to “write a history of the world without leaving home” and this is just what he’s done. Bryson, an American, now lives in a church rectory in the English countryside, and his book takes you on a room-by-room tour of his house. It’s a relaxed and rambling stroll through history, where he dishes up little-known facts and fascinating insights into an array of topics: why do we live in houses? Who invented the lightbulb? Why was the Eiffel Tower built? What almost kept Darwin from boarding The Beagle? Why do blazers have buttons on the cuffs that serve no purpose? While the book is filled with random trivia, it also covers the industrial age, world politics, famous figures, diseases, historical events, and more. Like all the best teachers, Bryson gives you an education without appearing to do so. As one reviewer stated “if this book doesn’t supply you with five years’ worth of dinner conversation, you’re not paying attention.” So invite me to your next dinner party or, better yet, buy the book yourself and learn something new.
There are few pleasures better than curling up with a great little science fiction novel and fantasizing the day away. I'm usually a sucker for operatic space sagas (or at least anything with a spaceship) but David Gerrold's narrative on time travel, The Man Who Folded Himself, sucked me right in. Nominated for a Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1973 and the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1974, Gerrold explores the psychological, physical, and personal challenges that manifest when time travel is possible for a single individual at the touch of a button. When Daniel Eakins, a young college student, inherits a time travel device from his uncle, the first thing he does is take himself out for a day at the races and a night on the town. As time haphazardly flows by, he gets far more than chummy with himself. He lives a life of luxury and whim. There is a constant poker game in his apartment and a party in his mansion solely attended by himself from different times. He, as I defiantly know I would, falls in love with himself and spends a good portion traveling trough time getting to do what we all wish self-love was. My ultimate fantasy played out before my eyes. Hooked on the Doctor Whoian complete disregard for linear time and you can't wait for the Christmas Special? Then The Man Who Folded Himself should help you get your fix – minus the great music.

Q&A DJ
TOP TEN
dj t Although she hasn't been around for a long time, DJ T is quickly establishing herself as one of the leading ladies on Vancouver's queer music scene. She has been instumental in the success of several parites, including Slut Puppy, Lipstick Jungle, Jetgirl and Vancouver Pride. With her loyal fan base of underground hip-hop junkies, and her fiancé on her arm, things are looking good for this local talent. DJ T (aka Teairah Guy) will be one to look out for if you're at all interested in smooth sounds, rough beats and dance floor rocking! When did you start DJing? My first nightclub gig was a night called Girlfight at Atlantis. What kind of music do you play? I don't know really... I like to call myself a dancefloor rocker. I play hip-hop, top 40 and if the mood strikes I'll play some Motown too. Rock star moments? When Celebrities first re-opened, I was DJing there weekly and I decided to take this girl on a date. We walked past a half block line-up and walked in with no cover. It was a wicked feeling. What's playing on your iPod right now? Haha I still listen to CDs in the car! My jams right now are Beyonce's "Love On Top" and

"Countdown", Amy Whinehouse's "Valerie", and Bad Meets Evil's "Lighters". Musical inspirations? Fat Man Scoop and Crooklyn Clan! They make some of the best remixes ever played. Favourite places to play? I love Five Sixty, but it's the promoters that make the events for me. House of Venus, Crema Productions and Lisa Klein always treat me with great respect and hold parties that I have had the most fun at. Future plans? Looking forward to many more years of Djing. My business partner and I are looking into holding events in and around the city; keep a look out for Real Soul Productions. Other hobbies? I love watching movies with my fiancé, going dancing on the weekends, and playing basketball. V DJ T will be all over the scene in the New Year. Look up DJ T on Facebook!
