welcome to the kootenays Many of you don't need any introduction to this beautiful region, but for those who do, welcome! With Kootenay Pride in its seventeenth year, I couldn't be more proud to be a Nelsonite and Kootenay boy. And what an honour it is to be producing the second annual Official Kootenay Pride Guide 2013 in association with V-Rag Magazine, the largest monthly LGBTTQ publication west of Calgary. For those who have supported Pride for the last nearly-two decades, this year proves to be the most inclusive and most Kootenay-wide Pride yet, with events happening in Nelson and Castlegar. For all you newbies, you're in for a real treat! Nelson and the Kootenays have a spirit and atmosphere that's almost tangible, an amazing sense of togetherness and acceptance that makes me proud to call it home. Our annual event is what a Pride celebration should be, a diverse and upbeat festival that brings our community together and invites everyone to join in on the celebration. So if you're a local or a first-timer to the area, I hope you have a fantastic time at this year's 17th Annual Kootenay Pride! K
The Kootenay Pride Guide is produced by V-Rag Magazine, Vancouver's monthly LGBTTQ arts and culture magazine. t's hard to believe that Kootenay Pride is 17 this year! Almost legal, everyone! And as we mature into our late teenage years, our reach is getting larger and larger. As we all know, the Kootenays includes a broad and diverse cross section of all communities, and reaches far past the boundaries of Nelson. As such, our Pride kick-off party will take over Castlegar at the stunning Element Nightclub (292 Columbia Ave.) on Friday Aug. 30th for a historic event. Cirque de SoGay brings a wild circus theme to this year's festivities with local acrobat Connor and hula-hoop artist Kassandra joining host Conni Smudge in the greatest little show on earth! Worried about driving to and from Castlegar? Don't be! A shuttle from Finley's Pub (705 Vernon St.) in Nelson leaves after the Meet N Greet BBQ Dinner at 9:15pm and 10:45pm and returns 12:30am and 2:15am for those wanting to party all night long.

After tonight, you'll have gotten to know all your Pride friends, old and new. Don't sleep in too late on Saturday as the festivities begin again promptly at noon, with an all ages Open Stage Coffee House event at Kootenay Expressions (554 Ward St.). After that, head over to The Eagle's Hall (641 Baker St.) for this year's Book Study. There you can brush up on The End of San Francisco by Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore, copies available at Otter's Books. A quick disco nap might be in order to get your boogie on Saturday night for the Livin' Da Life dance, where we turn The Eagle's Hall into the hottest nightclub in the Kootenays for one night only. DJs Coleo (of Vancouver Pride and CeCe Peniston's opening DJ) and Tatcat will keep the party pumping into the early hours of the morning. Sunday will of course be the 17th Annual Pride Parade, the centerpiece of the Koote-

nay Pride festival. Wear your rainbows and cheer on those in your community making a difference. Please note the parade route has changed, this year beginning at Cottonwood Falls Park, going up historic Baker Street and ending at the Nelson Commons Parking Lot (formerly Extra Foods). There, you'll find the The Little Rally That Could featuring vendors, spoken word, food, live music and DJs all afternoon. Don't go anywhere, once 6pm rolls around, the rollers come out. The Vagina Slamologues Roller Derby Scrimmage take over the old Extra Foods building with a beer garden and after-party at Finley's Pub. Monday is sure to see a few hangovers, but that's to be expected with a weekend of this much fun. Some hair of the dog at The Hume Hotel (422 Vernon St.) for the Pride Mimosa Breakfast should help with that headache. Now let the festivities begin! K

www.facebook.com/kootenaypride we all know that story! I think that as you get older, how you feel about yourself is really vital and that's what makes the difference. If you feel good about yourself, people are generally quite nice. Words of advice?
conni smudge interviews
To have as much fun as possible. Fun is a concept I've grasped as I've gotten older. I didn't really understand it. If you had asked me 10 years ago if I'm happy, I would've found the question a bit baffling. Whereas now it's something I invest a lot of time in. One thing I've found is happiness is really in the mundane. The big stuff is kind of a bonus, but happiness really is about getting up in the morning, having your breakfast, and being with your friends. All the really mundane things are what really make you happy. K
boy
george I
f you don't know who Boy George is, then where the hell have you been? OutLook TV's intrepid reporter the unstoppable Conni Smudge got a chance to catch up with Boy George in preparation for his upcoming October 4th DJ set with Marc Vedo at The Element Nightclub. If you're here for Kootenay Pride, you're going to want to come back for this legendary Culture Club dance icon. Check out the full interview at www.youtube.com/user/OutLookTVSHAW. Quick question off the top of my head here. So when you're playing a gig, you have a set list... No, never! It's random. Sometimes I'll play things I've never heard! Ask Marc (Vedo), it freaks him out! [laughs] Sometimes I'll play stuff and I'll have heard it briefly, but I'll think 'I wanna play all new stuff tonight'. So I'll just take a risk; usually it works, sometimes it doesn't work. But I think it's exciting, I think that's what makes it fun! Breaking through the myth... Meeting people and knowing that they're not just out to meet Boy George, but understanding who George is... How do you do that? When I was very young, I was obsessed with people liking me and I think for a lot of famous people, that was the starting point. You start in this business partly because you want to feel loved and you probably equate mass hysteria and attention with being loved. And then you kind of realize that doesn't fill the void and you look for other things. And
conni smudge Who is Conni Smudge? Mz. Smudge is a people pleaser. She is an ambassador for the gay community. She is an entertainer, a leader, she is an original. And most importantly she is unstoppable! Why do you think Pride celebrations are important in smaller rural communities? I think it is a way that we can literally come out. Step out of our comfort zones, our cozy homes and neighbourhoods, gratefully filled with supportive friends and family that share our same views. To get out and about and meet new friends, like minded people. Showing everyone that our similarities out number our differences. What does Kootenay Pride mean to you? It is a time to rejoice! A celebration of our mosaic. A time when all of our shapes and colours are acknowledged and appreciated. It is also a yearly reminder to carry that Pride with us 24/7, 365. Conni Smudge will be performing at The Element Nightclub Friday Aug. 30th and at The Little Rally That Could Sunday Sept. 1.

SPIRIT BAR, NELSON
element nightclub, castlegar
While Spirit Bar resembles a nightclub you might expect to find in an urban, cosmopolitan centre, it is infused with a spirit that is distinctly Nelson; inclusive and diverse by design, Spirit Bar is Nelson’s entertainment hub, hosting established and upcoming acts both local and international, the space segmented into zones for lounging, catching up with friends, or dancing the night away. The vibe is friendly, and, taken in with an impressive LED lighting array, killer sound system, and slick finishing, cements Spirit Bar as Nelson’s preferred nightspot. Have a drink there or in one of the two other bars situated in The Hume Hotel, Mike's Place and The Library, home of the Pride Mimosa Breakfast.
Thanks to Element Nightclub, Castlegar is hosting its second Pride event! That's right, Kootenay Pride is no longer confined to Nelson, but has expanding out into the rest of the region for a historic night on Friday August 30th, Cirque de SoGay. The 600 seat award winning resto-club in downtown Castlegar features a state-ofthe-art sound system and light show that needs to be heard and seen to be believed. With nightly DJs and live entertainment, Element is a slice of inner city life dropped into the heart of the Kootenays. For over 5 years, the venue has seen the likes of Mark Farina, Benny Benassi, Naughty By Nature and K-OS. Thanks for adding Pride to the list!

lakeside park, NELSON
red sands nude beach, nelson
After a night (or several nights) of partying, there's nothing better than collapsing onto a pristine white sandy beach nestled on Kootenay Lake. Definitely the epicenter of the summer tourism boom, Lakeside Park has it all. Tennis courts, lawn bowling, a labyrinth, picnic tables, a concession stand, soccer fields and a gorgeous waterfront walkway. Oh yeah, and that beach! While it can get fairly busy on a hot sunny day, you'll always be able to find a spot to sunbathe, people watch and enjoy views of the lake and the Big Orange Bridge (affectionately known as Bob). The park is a short walk from downtown, and worth enjoying a cool post-Pride dip in the lake!
For the more adventurous traveller, Red Sands Nude Beach offers just that... beautiful red sand, warm private water and a place to bare all. At the end of Bealby Point Road, just a short stroll through a forested area will reveal an all-natural oasis that looks more Caribbean than Canadian. Although Red Sands is considered one of the best nude beaches in British Columbia, it's remained undeveloped and true to the spirit of the 1960s. It may be well-known among locals, but it will never seem crowded or overly busy, even on a hot long weekend afternoon. Of course, all are welcome, nude or not, and the beach is worth seeing just for its incredible views of the North Shore.
