“I HAD A HEADACHE AND A TOOTHACHE.” For my heart, I choose Redmond. Portia
Heart Attack Survivor
Portia never suspected a toothache and a headache could be symptoms of a heart attack. When she also began to sweat and have chest pains, she decided it was time to go to the ER. The emergency team at Redmond quickly diagnosed her two arterial blockages that required a cardiac stent. After her procedure and cardiac rehab, Portia is feeling better than ever and using her story to inspire others at church and at work.

Youngsters Decoded: THE TEXT FILES Here & Now WITH NINA LOVEL
READER BEWARE: This article contains language that may be unfamiliar to you. It is intended as a service to empower your understanding of commonly used words and parts of speech encountered in text messages and conversations with your grandchildren. The content herein is to be used ONLY to inform your personal one-way translation of the young’uns’ output. Do not attempt to actually use this language IRL. The subtleties of meaning and context are vast, and an attempt at use will inevitably result in screenshots of your loving missives posted online for the world to see, introduced with proclamations such as #textingwithgrandma, #funnyseniorcitizentextingcodes,
#pawpawhattheheck, #tellmegrannydidntmeanthat
I mean, how humiliating would that be???
#HASHTAGS These funny little wordages starting with # are called “hashtags”. The “#” is a decades-old computer programming symbol called a hashtag (and you always thought it was a pound sign), but in today’s lexicon, when it precedes a clump of letters accompanying a photo or online post, the whole thing is called a hashtag. Popularized by the micro-blogging site Twitter (#ifyoudontknowtwitterbynowyoumustliveunderarock) as a way to label and search for topics, these little buggers are everywhere now. And as quirky as the practice is, I’m actually okay with that. They make it easy to convey a complete thought without any concern for sentence structure, capitals or punctuation, and reading them can be fun, if you approach the task like solving a word puzzle. B/c that’s what you’re doing, actually. NVM the writers are not getting the practice they need in traditional composition; in the same way we say “I remember when you had to actually put your finger in a dial and rotate it to make a phone call,”, our children will say, “The olden days weren’t so great; remember 8

that pasta salad, well um, ok no worries, it’s cool, we’re good (but I’m really tired of that pasta salad…)”. LOL
WORD
THANK YOU, MOM.
It’s not just that words are being smooshed into little run-onword-sentences; their very meanings are going off the rails. Take the word “word”, for example. It is now a word that means more than just a word. The word “word” is no longer simply a thing you read, write or say or mince (or not); these archaic uses of the word “word” require that it be present in a sentence and surrounded by other, um, words to give it meaning. Today, the word “word”, like the Cheese in The Farmer in the Dell, stands alone. “Word” is now a complete sentence unto itself, used informally to express agreement or affirmation. (Talk about going astray!) If your granddaughter replies to your text with the word “word”, she means something like “well said”, “that’s true”, or “I heard dat!” Examples: You text “It sure is hot outside!” Granddaughter replies “Word.” If you’ve had an adventurous day, you might text your grandson “A storm was coming so we got off the river fast!” He should reply with, ‘Thank heavens, I’m glad you’re safe!” but he may just say “Word.” Don’t be offended; after all, he *did* text you back… Because this use of the word “word” has already made it into the dictionary, imma give you a pass here. Once you have encountered it IRL a few times (and only when you feel confident in your understanding), be brave and try it out. Please keep paragraph one in mind, however; I accept no responsibility for an inappropriately used word.
Of the many things for which I am grateful, my mother was tireless in ensuring that I grew up knowing how to talk right. Oops, speak correctly. Okay, I totally was *not* grateful for it at the time; that has had to come with age. Mom’s consistent answer to my childhood question “Where’s David at?” was, “Behind the at”! That was such an irritating reply, I prolly never said it more than twice, and I totes never had the energy (or the nerve) to point out the fact that David had actually been BEFORE the at. Today, people are still lurking around those “ats”. Though I could never pen “WYA” myself (nor are my children likely to; I made sure to pass on that hilarious retort), I’m pretty sure that were I to receive that question I’d have to reply “BTA”. FRFR. SORRY, NOT SORRY. It’s not easy to bring this one up but here goes. Another correction came from mom when I said, “me and Anne want to go swimming”. Which was immediately met with “Really? Is Anne really mean? Why would you want to go swimming with her if she’s mean?” It was way too annoying to hear that again, so I may have been one of the first three-year-olds to use “Anne and I” in the subject of a request. It took until fourth grade, however, before I sorted out the difference between “Anne and I want to go swimming” vs “The teacher gave extra homework to Anne and I.” She did? She gave extra homework to your eye???” Okay, to Anne and me. To me. I get it, I finally got it, and now I cannot let it go. This is not such a great thing. Because the grammarof my childhood is starting to stray. McWhorter explains that language evolves a little bit with each generation, and from my now-grown-up vantage point, I see how he’s right. He describes rules such as those above as “blackboard grammar”, and it is still recommended by linguists to be used in formal and high social situations and taught in school (yay). Disconcertingly, however, he also states that “Many of these rules…are more discussed than actually observed today.” Hmmmm. OK that explains a lot. So, words literally are on the move, and IMHO some of them have gone astray. It’s all good, though; I’m glad to have lived long enough to see where some of them are landing.
LOL Originally used as an abbreviation for “I’m laughing out loud”, LOL has been tossed around way past its meaningfulness. In fact,it has been described by John McWhorter in his new book “Words on the Move: Why English Won’t—and Can’t—Sit Still (Like, Literally)” as “an expression that imparts meaning”. In writing (yep texting is writing), appending “LOL” is now usually a means of softening or easing the statement just made. Think of it this way: were this to be a verbal exchange, one might say “Well I was late to the meeting again, heh-heh” (heh-heh being a self-effacing chuckle), but because heh-heh is too dorky (and long) to put in a text, LOL to the rescue! It can also indicate that kind of quick laugh that dismisses or moderates, as in “Are you bringing pasta salad again? LOL.”, which translates to “if you bring TEXT DECODING KEY

GRAND COLUMN D COMFORCARE considered, such as one’s current and future medical needs, family support system and budget. Since 90 percent of people age 65 and older want to stay in their home as long as possible, home care is a popular option. Many people assume that home care is covered under Medicare, but unfortunately Medicare does not pay for longterm home care services. Medicare covers short-term home health care prescribed by a physician. These services include skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. Assistance with bathing, feeding and other personal care may also be provided while a person is receiving home health care.
HOW MUCH DOES HOME CARE COST? In-home elder care costs can vary depending on where you live and the particular needs that each client may have. According to Genworth’s 2016 Cost of Care Survey, the median price for private-pay home care is $20 an hour. At that rate, it would cost about $41,600 per year for 40 hours of in-home care a week. To compare, the average cost for a semi-private room in a nursing home is $82,125 a year and $43,539 a year at an assisted living facility. According to Genworth, the average cost of long-term care is expected to rise between one and four percent over the next five years.

PAYING FOR CARE AT HOME – WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS? In-home care is typically paid for out-of-pocket. However, that’s not always the case. Here are seven other ways you may be able to cover long-term care costs:
1 Long-term care insurance is a supplemental policy purchased through a life insurance company. Long-term care insurance reimburses policyholders a set amount per day for home care services. Check with your or your loved one’s insurance carrier about coverage or contact ComForCare for free insurance eligibility verification.

3 Catastrophic auto insurance acts as a personal-injury protection or “no fault” insurance, which can cover home care expenses.
4 Workers’ compensation may cover home care costs associated with an illness or accident on the job.
5 Reverse mortgages are available to people 62 and older who own their home. The funds can be received in monthly installments or a lump sum. Check with your bank, or your loved one’s bank, for eligibility requirements, terms and conditions.
6 Medicaid may cover home care services through various waiver programs. In Northwest Georgia these waiver programs are coordinated through the Area Agency on Aging’s Gateway to Community Resources. ComForCare Home Care of Northwest Georgia is proud to be a provider in the CCSP and SOURCE Medicaid wavier programs. If you would like to know more information about these waiver programs please give us a call and we can make a referral to the program on your behalf.
7 Family funds can be set up among siblings and other family members to cover the cost of home care for an aging parent or relative. Be sure to clearly spell out the terms of the agreement and consult an elder law attorney for guidance.
Paying for home care is just one part of the long-term care process. If you have additional questions or would like to schedule a free in-home consultation, call 706-622-3065. ROME HEALTH AND REHAB D GRAND COLUMN
Lisa Thomas, Denise Champagne, Jennifer Haislip-Lynn
My Eyes Have Seen the Glory Where Amazing Things Happen WITH ROME HEALTH AND REHAB AS A VOLUNTEER at Rome Health and Rehab, I was provided the opportunity to witness and be a part of the facility on an intimate level. From the exceptional nursing and dietary care to the therapy and activities programs, Rome Health and Rehab encompasses the elements that make an inspiring and skilled nursing facility, creating a positive experience for both patients and family members. One of the most notable aspects of RH&R is the nursing care, where treatment extends well beyond standard medical needs. In addition to the nurses providing timely and professional medical assistance, the resident care specialists compliment those efforts with special touches of their own, such as the administration of manicures, hair trims and makeup applications to name a few. This special touch further illustrates the unique nature of the facility by placing emphasis on patient wellbeing medically, as well as personally and emotionally. In addition to the nursing care, the dietary program of the facility is a second stand out. As a volunteer, I sat alongside the patients during numerous meals that were noticeably prepared with individual needs in mind. Each meal featured different foods with little repetition throughout the week, allowing patients to
enjoy a diverse and healthy menu. Moreover, family members who came to visit patients at the facility were awarded the same treatment, as they were encouraged to enjoy an equally delicious meal alongside their loved ones. Accompanying the positive experience from the dietary department, Rome Health and Rehab excels in its activities programs. In an effort to keep patients engaged, entertained and witty, the facility incorporates a myriad of games and events including art projects, music classes and most notably, Bingo! Not only does RH&R pull from inside help to create engaging activities, but art volunteers from the Rome community are welcomed to spend time with patients as well, creating even more diversity and outside engagement for the patients. Finally, assisting the nurses, cooks and activities directors, the therapy department uniquely aids in the synergistic efforts to reestablish health for the Rome Health and Rehab patients. As with any physical therapy program, the physical therapists at RH&R work enthusiastically to bring patients back to their previous state of function, if not better. Beyond that, however, the therapists operated in such a way that allowed each patient to feel optimist concerning his progressing health as well as educated in how to sustain this new level of wellbeing. After completing my time as a volunteer, I can firmly say that each department of the facility offers its own unique approach to uplift each patient both physically and emotionally. If you want a chance to feel inspired about your health and that of others, I highly suggest awarding yourself the same opportunity I did and volunteer at the truly inspiring nursing facility that is Rome Health and Rehab. Rome Health and Rehab is located at 1345 Redmond Circle, Rome, GA 30165. You can also contact their offices at 706-234-8281.

Hooray for Seniors! Where the Heart Is WITH RENAISSANCE MARQUIS
7 Practices for Seniors I CHUCKLED WHEN I heard him say it. Maybe you have heard it, too. “If I’d known I was going to live this long; I would have taken better care of myself.” We smile as we realize the truth of that statement. While we cannot go back and change anything, we can adopt a few practices that can make the days ahead better for each of us. For those who are “Senior” adults here are seven practices that can make a positive difference in your life.
Start your day with words of comfort, hope and encouragement. 1
Words are powerful! A great way to start your day is by reviewing words of hope and encouragement. Some like to begin the day with positive affirmations like: 1. I am blessed. 2. I am feeling wonderful today. 3. My mind is strong and my memory is clear. 4. I am grateful to learn new things today. 5. My age refines me it does not define me.
How you start your day has an effect on how the rest of your day goes. I encourage you to begin your day with positive and encouraging words!

Express Thanks.
Being thankful improves your life in many ways. Begin or end each day by listing three things you are thankful for. A gratitude journal is a great tool to use. Get some type of notebook and write three things you are thankful for each day. In time your attitude of gratitude will begin to make a significant impact on your life and the lives of others.
3
Live in the present.
We can’t truly live in the past but we can learn from the past. Now is what matters. If you live in the past it will hinder you, if you learn from the past it will help you and others. What you have gone through; what you have experienced has prepared you for NOW, for this moment. Now is your time to share your insights and experiences with others. Now is the time to make a difference in the life of others. Now is the time to call that friend that's been on your mind. Now is the hour to write your loved one. Now is the only time you are sure of so make the most of this moment... right NOW.
Invigorate yourself by moving. 4
A body in motion tends to stay in motion. If you are able to get up and walk around, do so. Walking is one of the easiest and most effective exercises you can do. It is also fun to walk with a partner. If you have a cane or a walker don't look at them as a limitation; but see them as a tool to allow you to stay in motion. Move more today and see if you don't feel better than you did yesterday.
5
7
Serve someone today.
Serving others opens you up to greater joy, more blessings, and feelings of significance. It is sad to grow older and have the mindset that “I am to be served.” It makes your world way too small. When you serve others you learn you are able to do more than you thought you could do. Serving others energizes you. Serving others allows you to be part of something bigger than yourself. So look for ways to serve others; you will find opportunities if you look for them. I recently read a Native American proverb that said: “When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a manner that when you die the world cries and you rejoice.” I like that! I believe these seven practices will help me and you to live such a life. Renaissance Marquis is located at 3126 Cedartown Hwy. SW, Rome. Visit renaissancemarquis.com or call ahead for an appointment at 706-295-0014. Contact him to schedule a visit at the Renaissance Marquis or to have him come speak to your group. mellis@renaissancemarquis.com
Be original.
You are the only YOU there is so be the best YOU you can be; everyone else is already taken. You are an ORIGINAL, one of a kind person and the world NEEDS you to be you. We need your gifts and abilities so don't hide them; use them for the good of others!

easy to react but it is far better to respond. It seems the older we get the quicker we are to react. It is so important to be careful with our words because once they are spoken they can only be forgiven; not forgotten. We would all do well to THINK before we speak. GRAND COLUMN D NINA LOVEL
We are Rome A SENIOR PROFILE STEVE KIGHT JUMPS nimbly onto his mountain bike with the excitement of a child and disappears into the woods at Garrard Park in West Rome before the photographer in the chase truck can catch him. When he finally slows down it is to point out one of several bridges that he helped build on the trail, and then he demonstrates how much fun it is to ride across. His confidence on the bike seems to convey a lifetime in the saddle, but the fact is, he is 66 years old and has only been riding for four years. A career electrician, Kight’s work kept him physically active but after retiring at 62 and remodeling the house he and wife Leanne had chosen for retirement, he sat back for some well-earned relaxation. It wasn’t long before that relaxation saw the unwelcome arrival of some extra pounds. Determined not to let those pounds feel at home, Kight quickly discovered the unfortunate truth that, “at our age, diets just don’t work.” He took up running in an attempt to work them off, but the extra weight made it difficult to run and Kight was uninspired. Then one day he drove past a bicycle shop, stopped in and bought two mountain bikes. While Leanne enjoyed riding with him, she was still working so Kight had more time to play. With their house within a stone’s throw of Berry’s back campus, Kight ventured onto the trails there; soon the weight fell off and Steve Kight had a new passion. It wasn’t that easy at first. The most common issue for new riders occurs where the saddle meets the seat, and 16

encountering this, Kight was determined to get past it. “One of the most important things a biker needs is a relationship with a good bike shop that can adjust your bike’s fit, where they’re knowledgeable and carry an assortment of gear (pedals, brakes, handlebars, saddles, helmets, etc.). You don’t have to start with the high-end stuff; it’s okay to take your time and find what works for you. You can always change up your gear.” This helped Kight with his saddle issue. A crescent-shaped saddle allowed him to concentrate on his riding, and once his legs gained strength he returned to the traditional style. He has since shared that crescent with other new riders. Cyclists are like that; they are friendly, happy to exchange ideas, and they love to mentor newcomers. Kight has also found a way to serve the off-road biking community. For more than a year he has invested countless
hours helping to clear and construct the GE Trails at Garrard Park. That’s how he disappeared into the woods so quickly; he had cleared the trail himself. When a newly-chunky 62-year-old can climb onto two wheels, enjoy the outdoors, find new fitness without pounding the pavement and have lots of fun while doing it, this must be a lifetime sport. If you’re wondering whether you, like Kight, might prefer a mountain bike over a road bike (or if you weren’t aware until now that there is a difference), your choice will depend on the type of ride and surroundings that you prefer, and the way you enjoy your fellowship. If you enjoyed riding your childhood Schwinn across yards, ditches and your grouchy neighbor’s flower beds, you’re probably a mountain biker. Mountain (aka off-road) bikes are compact and sturdy, have wide knobby tires for traction and shock absorbers that serve both comfort and safety. Built for adventure, they have many gears to accommodate all types of terrain, the rider sits fairly upright in the saddle and the handlebar grips are cushy. While off-road riders are sociable and do develop group riding friendships, the narrow nature of trails dictates that riders go single-file, and safety dictates that ample space be maintained in front of and behind each bike, so mountain biking is a rather solitary sport. A mountain bike can transport you to adventure or to solitude in peaceful, remote areas to commune with nature. You may already have made your decision, but read on just to be sure. Cheryl Burch, a happily retired school counselor with a lifetime commitment to fitness, is a veteran road-biker. She started out as a runner, and in a theme that becomes familiar when talking to cyclists, the years of repetitive impact took their toll and she underwent spinal fusion surgery in 2001. This might have slowed a lesser woman down, but Cheryl saw it as an opportunity for change and started shifting gears, first on a mountain bike and later finding a road bike to be more comfortable. A few years later, she met and married Dr. Joe Burch and as they merged their lives; they also merged his love for swimming and skiing and her love for road biking. Together they have pedaled thousands of miles on group rides over FA L L 2 0 1 7

northwest Georgia’s rolling backroads and across several states on guided tours. The joy that they share in riding and in life is perfectly clear: they always sport matching bike kits (those bright spandex jerseys and shorts worn to decrease wind resistance), even down to their socks. Emotion shines through as Cheryl, seated at the kitchen table in their beautiful new Fence Post Farm describes her love for riding. “In a car, there are so many things you miss; the wind on your face, the sun on your skin, the smells of pastures and fields...I have seen so much beauty from my bike.” She and Joe ride together whenever possible, but because he is still working, Joe gets in 2-3 pre-dawn rides a week with friends who roll out at 5 am for a fast seventeen-mile loop through the streets of Rome. They’ve had a great workout before the neighbors even turn on the coffee. After her morning strength workouts, Cheryl often takes her bike from its ready-to-roll garage rack and rides down the beautiful Kingston backroads at the end of their driveway. Sometimes they join one of several weekly 30-50 mile group rides around town, and sometimes they just wait until Joe gets home in the evening and have a pedal-date to the nearby Dollar General. No matter the destination; they love the journey and one another, happy together on pedals, skis or just working on the farm. Today’s road bike is highly-evolved: strong, light and singular in purpose: to convert energy from the rider into forward motion as efficiently as possible on a paved surface. The bike’s narrow treadless tires, inflated to a psi that would explode the ones on your car, do a great job of minimizing resistance, but they can quickly become a liability if a patch of gravel, a deep mud rut or (heaven forbid but it happens) a squirrel gets in the way. The most important factor in selecting any bike is that it must be the right size for you. Even if you start with a used bike, take it to a good bike shop and ask to be measured on it. There may be some cost involved, but it’s an investment in comfort and safety and you’ll be glad you made it when
you’re halfway through a 40 mile trip with your newfound friends. Once you have your fit, your next best investment will be in the quality of the frame composition. Saddle, pedals and handlebars can be upgraded later, but you want the best frame you can afford, because road bikes do not have shock absorbers; the frame itself serves that purpose. Get the bike with the best combination of strength and flexibility in the frame. As much for safety as fellowship, road bikers tend to travel in packs. Many local groups meet each week, notified through the Facebook group “Rome Rides a Bike” and an email list server. The messages bear brief descriptions such as “Ride from airport tomorrow at 8 a.m. 14-16 mph. Around 50 miles. No drop.” (That would be a long, fast expert ride; don’t sign up for it yet). Cyclists love their sport and are welcoming to newcomers. If you’re not ready for a 50 mile ride but want to

Dr. Ben Pridemore skids his left-fork Cannondale into a sideways scratch-stop, then quickly asks the photographer “Did you get it?” He knows what to ask a photographer; he is an accomplished one himself, with collections from 51 countries and all 50 states, many of which bedeck the walls of his orthodontic office, a stunning gallery of lifetime travels and passions. A semi-retired orthodontist who has practiced in Rome for more than fifty years, he keeps his bike on the back of his car and rides it nearly every day after leaving the office. At eighty-one, Ben Pridemore is a man of indomitable focus and energy; he’s been like that all his life. He began working at age eleven, worked throughout his school years, and even as a full-scholarship football star at MTSU he worked nights and weekends to cover living expenses. He then volunteered for Vietnam, afterwards completing dental school with an orthodontic specialty, supporting himself with hard work the whole time. He even worked in Rome for months before moving here. During his residency in Memphis he flew to
Rome every weekend, saw patients all day on Saturdays and by the time he moved here he already had a thriving practice. Pridemore’s explanation for his choice of a mountain bike has common threads with Cheryl’s story. An athlete all his life, once he settled down to practice in Rome his activity of choice was running. He joined (then) Redmond Park Hospital’s physician relay team and competed against HCA teams around the south. When, like Burch, he developed back issues from running and had a spinal fusion, he became a road biker with a vengeance. “After work I would leave my farm on Old Dalton Road and ride alone for 50-60 miles. I would push myself, but it was also relaxing to me. One day I realized that some of my friends had gotten in cycling accidents that were not their fault, and I decided that off-road biking would be safer.” Knowing that mountain biking would be more strenuous on his back, Pridemore sought the advice of a physical therapist who recommended strengthening exercises to prevent injury. “Some people are afraid to become active because they’re afraid they’ll get hurt. But if you get the advice of experts, listen to what they say and start slowly, you’ll be surprised at what you can do.” FA L L 2 0 1 7

GRAND FEATURE D PEDAL PUSHERS Intimately familiar with the trails at Berry from his years of running, Pridemore took his bike and his strengthened back into the woods. He climbed, jumped and skidded, and he maintained an incredible level of fitness and agility. His wife Colleen won’t bike with him (“she says I go too fast”), but they enjoy taking their horses on long trail rides in the Smokies, and they snow ski several times a year. Ben Pridemore is a grateful man. “On every ride I find a place of peace and beauty and I stop and say how grateful I am to be there. Every day is a gift. If you stop moving and sit down, things go away fast, and there’s still so much to do…I don’t want to miss a thing!” Clearly, biking is a lifetime sport. It is muscle-building cardio that does not pound on your joints. There are flavors from which to choose and fellowship and fresh air to be enjoyed. Now you have the back-story on those colorful groups you’ve seen on Texas Valley, Floyd Springs and Kingston Roads, and now you’ll understand the destination of that car with two muddy mountain bikes racked on the back. Look closely the next time you (carefully please) pass any of these and you’re likely to notice some grey around the temples of those helmets. Turns out that an empty nest can be the birthplace of a fresh new passion, a new road to friends and a lifetime of fitness. If you have an interest in biking, you will find a mentor nearby. Cycling evangelist Chris McCormick has coached and encouraged scores of riders through the years. She’s also made Rome a destination by growing the annual Up the Creek Without a Pedal ride, attended by hundreds of riders from all over the south. Julie and Trey Smith have worked with TRED to add miles of trails through and around Rome, and they also happen to have a bike shop that would love to fit you out. Three years after choosing a mountain bike, Steve Kight conquered the “36-mile gravel grinder” Assault on Curahee Mountain and continues to build trails and explore new ones. “I’d like to see older people get a vision for their health,” he says. “Don’t think you can’t do it, because you can.” Cheryl and Joe Burch celebrate togetherness on the road. “Biking is part of who we are as a couple. It allows us to nurture our physical and spiritual health.” To someone considering the sport, Cheryl says, “It’s a low-impact sport that’s good through a lifetime. It’s so important to be a good steward of your body; if God gives you something you must take care of it.” Ben Pridemore keeps his body tuned, his heart grateful and his skidding skills intact all over the trails at Berry. “Nothing is free” he says, “especially your health. If I can inspire just one person by sharing my story and the gifts God has given to me, that’s what I will keep on doing.” Energy. Courage. Health. Fellowship. Gratitude. Cycling. You? 22
