MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR VISIT
For visitors to V8 Ranch, this book serves as a companion for what we hope will be one of the best days of your Brahman adventure. Here are a few ways to use this guide to help you remember everything you see and learn.

FINDING THE MUST-SEE HIGHLIGHTS AT V8
1 The V8 Wall of Grand Champions (in the V8 Showbarn office): Originally built by Luann’s father, Gene Johnston, after our first National Champion in 1976, the wall has grown beyond anything we could have ever imagined. Every V8 Ranch National or International Grand Champion is commemorated here.
2 The Carved V8 (near the V8 Showbarn): A woodcutter who frequently works at the ranch surprised us many years ago by carving this now iconic V8 symbol into a stump at the ranch.
3 The Ebony Tree (near The Carved V8): Paying homage to his dark color, the ebony tree near The Carved V8 marks the burial site of +Mr. V8 380/6.
4 The Sendero (straight from the cattleguard past The Ebony Tree): In one of our pastures, there is a thick forest that prevented us from penning the cows for years. It never failed, they would get into the brush and hide. In 2020, we cut a path through the brush, and much to our surprise, we discovered a hidden clearing the cows had been bedding down in for years. The Sendero is several degrees cooler than the rest of the ranch in the summer due to its shady pathways. On Sloan’s last day out on the ranch, he rode through The Sendero for the first time. His comment: “This is really something.”
5 Copperhead Corner (the bend in the ranch road after the sendero): This particular bend is a frequent crossing for Copperhead snakes. We’re wildlife aficionados, but nobody on this ranch likes Copperheads!
6 Treat Bags (any Mule or vehicle at V8 Ranch): We place a bag of “treats” in nearly every vehicle on our ranches because our friendly cows love treats! Shake the bag of treats and prepare to be surrounded by a whole bunch of new friends!
7 The Swinging Tree (located in the calving pasture): The oldest and largest tree on the ranch, this giant oak tree is called The Swinging Tree because every child in the V8 family has sat and swung on its low-hanging limbs. Expectant mothers often lay down near the tree to birth their calves. Jim clearly remembers the day, back in 1985, when (+)Mr. V8 202/3 was born under The Swinging Tree.
8 (+)Mr. V8 202/3’s Resting Place (the circular driveway at Jim's house): (+)Mr. V8 202/3 is buried near the circular driveway in front of Jim and Luann’s house on the Boling ranch.
9 The Painted V8 Barns (throughout the ranch): As you pull into V8, you’ll notice that the ends of our barns are all painted with the V8 brand. The entire family enjoys the painted V8 barns, but Mollie Williams loves them the most.
10 The Living Legends (on both ranches): Keep your eyes open for some of the most famous Brahman herd bulls in the world. At any given time, you may see Sloan, Yeti, or Man of Steel roaming around our Boling and Hungerford ranches. They love meeting visitors, getting attention, and receiving scratches.
11 The Roller Coaster (you’ll know it when you feel it): Another treat on the ranch roads, this hill and valley make a natural rollercoaster if you drive fast with your hands up in the air!
12 The Mesquite Tree (on the Caney Creek banks)Jim’s favorite tree is a mesquite tree, and you can imagine his great happiness when, a few years ago, one began growing on its own accord. It is our tradition to take an annual photo of Knox (the youngest V8) by The Mesquite Tree on Knox’s birthday to document how much he, and the tree, have grown. Perhaps you’d like to join in the tradition and take a photo by The Mesquite Tree each time you visit V8 Ranch.

ONE FAMILY • ONE HERD • ONE PASSION
NOT YOUR AVERAGE COWBOYS
When you meet any member of the V8 family, you'll soon discover that we're far more than the stereotypical ranchers that folks outside of the business might make us out to be. It's true: we live, eat, and breathe Brahman cattle, but we didn't become one of the world's most decorated Brahman cattle ranching families just because. Learn about our other skills and passions on our Instagram highlight, “The V8 Family.”

Like anything worth doing, our annual Herd Reference Guide is a labor of love. For some, these guides may just appear to be a compilation of photos and stats for goodlooking cattle but read closer and you’ll find that it’s actually a detailed family history –for the cows, the bulls, and the people who live and work on V8 Ranch.
GETTING VALUE FROM THIS GUIDE

This year, while still mourning the loss of our great patriarch, Sloan Williams, we decided to include more history, more anecdotes and more V8 lore than ever before. It’s important information for our customers and Brahman enthusiasts, and it’s also important to us. The pedigrees and family trees are impressive in their own right, but we view them with an added dimension because we greeted these cattle in the morning light; walked the ranch with them by day; watched them graze lazily from our front porches in the evening light. For us, each and every identifying number represents a face, a gait, a memory. Their existence meant something to us. And the rich, textured history of each cow family is intertwined with the history – and the memories – of our own family. By recording

this history, we honor the generations before us who pioneered the lives we are so blessed to live today.

Ask Jim Williams about a particular cow, and he can rattle off her dam, her sire, and her performance stats the way a sports commentator spouts trivia. But, he’ll also recall even the tiniest nuances and details particular to each animal: “She had little ears and held them close to her head”, he might say. Or, “She had a small mark on the right side of her tailhead.” He remembers the exact location where each calf is born as well as what the weather was like on that day. It’s more than just business; it’s meaningful, purpose-filled, and personal.

This book was written for you. We hope you’ll find value in the explanations, history, and breeding connections we outline herein. But this guide was also written for us. Each year, as we compile the guide, we learn a new anecdote or realize a connection between two animals that has never been highlighted before. As you peruse this guide, we encourage you to take notes, ask questions, and dream big. It’s our goal to help you achieve your Brahman goals, to help you build a herd that means as much to you as ours does to us. Please seek out any one of us for more details on specific animals, or with any questions about our philosophy and our practices on the ranch.
YOUR FRIENDS FROM THE V8 FAMILY,

THE MARK OF EXCELLENCE
THE STORY OF V8 RANCH

When Sloan and Mollie Williams decided to gamble on their love of livestock and buy V8 Ranch in 1971, they knew just what they were doing. And it's quite the story, too.
Sloan and Mollie Williams both come from deeply rooted Texas ranching families. Sloan’s family had been pioneering ranchers in Millican, Texas for more than 100 years. Mollie grew up on the J.D. Hudgins Ranch, and today, we still keep a special place in our hearts for our cousins at J.D. Hudgins.
HOW V8 GOT ITS START
Before we can tell you how we got V8 Ranch, we have to tell you how it came to be such a catch. V8 was established back in 1944, long before Sloan and Mollie bought it. It was founded by Howard Parker of Center, Texas. Parker was a Ford automobile dealer and named his cattle ranch ‘V8’, after the engine. Over time, his herd became well-known throughout the country for its outstanding cow families with gentle dispositions. It’s no surprise that today, more than 75 years later, the guiding force behind V8 breeding is still its legendary cow families.
BECOMING V8: A CALL FROM DESTINY
In 1971, word got out that Parker was looking to sell the V8 herd, brand, and ranch in Center, Texas. It was just one week before Christmas when Sloan heard the news. Even back then, V8 was known as one of the better Brahman ranches in the United States. The cattle were good cattle, and Sloan knew it. Not only was the ranch on the market; Parker wanted the deal to go through before the New Year! Problem was — Sloan was out of town, in New Mexico, on his first (and only) Williams family ski trip.
These were the days before e-mail and cell phones. Communication was going to be tricky, but this was destiny. And, when destiny’s calling,
you call back. Sloan negotiated the million-dollar deal via a pay phone in Red River, New Mexico. He recruited investors to purchase the real estate from the ranch but acquired the registered cattle herd and V8 brand himself. After his vacation, Sloan relocated the herd to our Allenhurst Ranch in Matagorda County for a brief stay, prior to moving them to our headquarters in Wharton County, where they’ve lived ever since.
BUILDING V8 RANCH: A FAMILY AFFAIR
Building a world-famous ranch takes hard work, sleepless nights, and unwavering dedication. Sloan knew that as the owner of V8, he would need to draw on the talents of his wife and family. After all, ranching is a family tradition, and everyone was happy to help out with the effort.
In 1976, Jim Williams graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in animal science, and he and his wife Luann returned to the ranch. Jim began work as manager of the purebred Brahman herd, and Luann took over ranch office duties.
Jim has a keen eye for cattle breeding and a passion for Brahman herd improvement—two qualities of a successful cattleman. He quickly began implementing the strict selection and culling guidelines that we still follow to this day. He adopted performance record keeping. He began to assemble what has become one of the most detailed and complete cow herd production histories available on any herd in the United States.
Sloan Williams had the vision to make the ranch internationally known. He and his wife, Mollie, traveled to South America, Central America, Thailand and Australia, building strong relationships with other ranching families that we maintain to this day. Jim and Luann Williams continued that work as international ambassadors for Brahman ranching, traveling worldwide in the 1980s and 1990s.
THAT V8 STYLE: OUR RAPID RISE
V8 has always known a high level of notoriety dating back to its foundation in the 1940s. When Sloan and Mollie (Forgason) Williams purchased V8, we were blessed with a great combination of family connections, skill, and luck. In those early years, Lanier Forgason and his two sons (Mollie’s brothers) allowed us to use their best two-yearold bulls; we’ve always been grateful for the ability to use JDH genetics for new blood and outcrossing as we worked to develop and strengthen our line-breeding approach to females.
We exhibited our first National Champion Female in 1976 and our first National Champion Bull in 1979, but it wasn’t until the early 1980s that the ranch really exploded onto the worldwide Brahman scene. Under Jim and Sloan’s expert breeding, V8 Ranch developed a reputation for its outstanding cow families.
But what really made us ‘famous’ was our remarkable ability to consistently breed and market large volumes of cattle specifically produced for fertility, conformation, Brahman breed character, and structural correctness. By focusing our energy on developing these characteristics, we unconsciously developed something else: an unmistakable V8 look, carried by our females, that’s become recognizable the world over. Breeders everywhere claim they can identify a V8-bred animal without even looking at their brand or pedigree. “It’s that V8 style,” they tell us.
We hosted our first ranch production sale in 1981: “The Golden Gate Sale.” It was a runaway success, breaking six world records for Brahman sales. From then, the popularity of V8 Ranch skyrocketed.
Always passionate about improving the herd, Jim spent a great deal of time studying the U.S. Sugar Corporation’s cattle, and when the herd dispersed in the mid-1980s, we purchased their top animals. One of the females we incorporated into the V8 herd produced (+)Mr. V8 202/3, an elite Vanguard sire and the winningest U.S. Brahman bull of all time. 202/3 launched our legacy of producing championship cattle, one right after the other. Since then, several bulls have had their own eras of success and influence on our herd, including:
• +Mr. V8 287/5 “Superstroke,” born in 1998, a six-time undefeated International Champion Get-Of-Sire Winner (2001-2006).
• +Mr. V8 380/6 “The Machine,” born in 2006, the #1 Sire of USA Champions from 2011-2018 as reported by The Brahman Journal. In 2021, 380/6 moved into the number one position of all time in the Register of Renown.
• +Mr. V8 146/8 “Sloan,” born in 2017, the breed’s only three-time International Champion. One of, if not the, youngest bulls to enter the ABBA Register of Renown, we feel that he is leading the next generation of all-time great V8 sires.
SALES AT V8
After our first Golden Gate Production sale, we hosted 1986’s Visions of The Future Sale, and 2000’s Power of Production Sale, which grossed more than $1 million dollars from buyers spanning the globe. In 2015, we embraced the online sales platform and returned to public auctions. Since then, we have consistently broken Brahman records with the highest-averaging female sales. In 2021, we sold onehalf interest in Miss V8 472/9 for the record-setting price of $150,000. Currently, we host two online sales per year (our “Made for Magic” events) where we sell our top-end heifers.
SHOW RING SUCCESS
Since 1976, the ranch has exhibited more than 100 National, International Grand or Reserve Grand Champions. We’ve won the prestigious HK Memorial Trophy for Premier Exhibitor of the International Show 14 times.
REACHING NEW HEIGHTS TOGETHER
Sloan and Mollie Williams achieved their lifelong dream of ranching together, and now that dream includes their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. At the ranch, on any given day, you’ll find at least three generations of family members working side by side.
Having marketed more than 19,000 head of purebred Brahman cattle worldwide, the Williams family takes great pride in being a hands-on, working family ranch. Today, Jan
WE BELIEVE IN BRAHMAN CATTLE AND THE PEOPLE WHO RAISE THEM.
Williams Powell (Sloan and Mollie’s daughter) and her family live and work on the Hungerford Ranch and manage the ranch’s 2000+ commercial cattle. Jan heads up the ranch’s horse division. Jan’s daughter and son-in-law, Payton and Joe Dodge Jessee, are responsible for our sale bulls and supervise the ranch’s hay operations. Jim and his family live and work on the Boling Ranch which houses the purebred Brahman cow herd and show barn. Jim and Luann’s daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Luke Neumayr, are the art directors behind all of V8’s marketing materials. And little five-year-old Knox Neumayr, 8th generation rancher, already has a role caring for and managing the ranch’s keeping heifers (with an assist from his parents, of course!)
A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE
At the ranch, the entire family knows not to drive mules on the roads when they’re wet. The tires make unsightly ruts in the roads when they dry – Jim’s biggest pet peeve! He takes great pride in V8’s pristine paths. At shows, every detail is considered – from the booth décor to the design of the brochures. If we had a coat of arms, our motto would be: excellence. Whether you’re breeding cattle or setting up a stall party, it takes commitment, care, determination, and extra effort to excel. We believe hard work is worth it. That philosophy is ingrained in each and every generation from the day they can toddle in their
first pair of cowboy boots until the day they make the big jump.
SHARING THE SPIRIT OF EXCELLENCE
At V8 Ranch, we raise Brahman cattle every day of the year. We know them well, and if our cattle fail to function in our pasture, there is no need for them in yours. Dedicated and sincere in producing sound, common-sense cattle, every member of our family is honored and humbled to show our program to potential customers. For us, there’s nothing more gratifying than driving through our pastures and visiting about many things, especially Brahman cattle. In doing so, we have the opportunity to meet and become friends with many of the finest people in the world.
John W. Gardner said that excellence is “doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.” Our success lies not only in striving for excellence on our ranch, but in helping our customers achieve excellence in their own operations. As such, we’re always willing to guide and counsel customers when they have questions and concerns.
Our pledge to the future will continue to be one of honesty and integrity with you and ourselves with the goal of producing an honest product that proves profitable for all phases of the industry.
Why do we do it?
Because we believe in Brahman cattle and the people who raise them.

HISTORICAL TIMELINE
Some aspects of ranch life never change — animals will always need care; fences will always need fixing; barns will always need cleaning; grass levels will always need monitoring. Yet in the midst of the enduring chores that constitute the lifestyle of rancher, there are new developments, exciting discoveries, devastating losses, exhilarating wins, and many magical moments. Here are few of our favorite memories from the V8 Ranch history books.
1839
Mollie Williams’ family ranching heritage began in Wharton County, Texas. The family ranch, J.D. Hudgins, Inc. is still a leader of the Brahman breed worldwide.

1932
Knox T. Williams “KT”, Sloan’s grandfather, settled in Millican, Texas where he ran a large commercial cattle operation.

1944
V8 was established long before the Williams family bought it, back in 1944. It was founded by Howard Parker of Center, Texas. Parker was a Ford automobile dealer and named his cattle ranch ‘V8’, after the engine. Over time, his herd became well-known throughout the country for its outstanding cow families with gentle dispositions.
1967
Sloan and Jim started “Sloan Williams & Son,” a red Brahman cattle business.
1971
After selling his rodeo business, Sloan continued his family's heritage of ranching with purchasing V8. Sloan negotiated the million-dollar deal via a pay phone in Red River, New Mexico.
1981
We hosted our first ranch production sale in 1981: “The Golden Gate Sale.” It was a runaway success, breaking six world records for Brahman sales. From then, the popularity of V8 Ranch skyrocketed.

1976
The ranch exhibited its first National Champion, +Miss V8 104/2 in Shreveport, Louisiana.
1986
When the U.S. Sugar Corporation's herd dispersed in 1986, V8 purchased their top animals. Jim, Luann,
and Sloan were in attendance at the two day event. We brought home 39 of our top 40 Sugarland females to V8.
2000
After a 14 year hiatus from production sales, the Power of Production Sale was held in Wharton, Texas. This historic event featured over 220 lots. The sale was standing-room only and grossed more than 1 million dollars with buyers spanning the globe.
2008
2015
V8 Ranch completed a historic shipment of the first live cattle to be exported from the USA to South America since borders closed in 2003.

2020
+Mr. V8 146/8 set the record as being the first to win Grand Champion Bull at Houston three times in a row.

2021
+Mr. V8 380/6 moved into the number one position in the ABBA Register of Renown.
1988
Our investment in Sugarland genetics paid off with the record-setting championship run of (+)Mr. V8 202/3, who was out of a Sugarland dam.
For the first time in 24 years, the World Brahman Congress was held in the USA. +Miss V8 464/6 was named Grand Champion Female.

2018
Jim judged his third World Brahman Congress in Colombia. He previously judged the show in 2006 (Mexico), followed by 2010 (Brazil).

OUR HISTORY OF
MAGIC MEMORIES

COW HERD

THE V8 RANCH COW HERD:
POWER OF PRODUCTION
What does a celebrated 19th-century English novelist have in common with 21st-century Texan ranchers? A guiding philosophy. Mary Ann Evans, known by her pen name, George Eliot, wrote Silas Marner, a Victorian-era novel that explores themes of societal rank and station, belonging and relationships. In the novel, Eliot quotes a saying from the local farmers – “Breed is stronger than pasture.” It’s akin to our own axiom: “The magic is in the cows.” Like Eliot, we believe good breeding matters more than external assists like money, fame, or the “quality of the pasture”.
In the following pages, you’ll see how the foundation females in the V8 cowherd have influenced our current animals hailing from their respective cow families. Just like many Native American, African and Southeast Asian tribes, we trace the kinship of our cattle through the female line. Whether bull or a female, an animal belongs to the cow family of its dam. Often, we will breed animals from prominent cow families with bulls who boast the power from one of our other cow families. The result is what we call a Superblend™.
OUR SUPERBLENDS
By focusing on our legendary foundation females, V8 Ranch has succeeded in establishing consistency and predictability in our cattle. We also believe it’s important to give credit to the cow family represented by the sire. As you explore the pedigree of our cattle, you’ll notice the blending of multiple cow families across generations of cattle. While the primary designation for our cattle is always determined by their dam's cow family, we have created a Superblend™ label to recognize animals hailing from a blend of two exceptional cow families. For example, +Miss V8 33/8 in the Rose cow family (Rose is her maternal grand dam) also blends with the Claydesta 203-807U5 cow family through her sire +Mr. V8 191/7. Look for the Superblend™ icon to identify cattle that represent a mix from more than one cow family.
THE MAGIC IS IN THE COWS.
JIM WILLIAMS
THE V8 RANCH MATRIARCHS

COW FAMILIES
Experts cite many matriarchal societies in the animal kingdom - honeybees, killer whales, Bonobo apes, and elephants, to name a few. At V8 Ranch, we respectfully add Brahman cattle to that list. Brahman bulls might command the most attention in the show ring, but behind every impressive bull, there is a strong cow family.

Since 1944, the V8 Ranch breeding program has focused on cow families. As we like to say, “the magic is in the cows.” Why? Because they’re powerful producers of consistent, award-winning progeny. We line breed to cow families and trace the kinship of our entire herd through female lines, respecting and honoring the contribution our dams make in creating superior Brahman cattle.
For us, these dams are like Brahman royalty – queens with noteworthy genetics and storied pedigree. It’s why we commissioned renowned Colombian artist Natalia Tamayo to paint official portraits of our matriarchal dams. And it’s also why we often breed animals from one prominent cow family with bulls who boast the power of another important cow family; we call the result a V8 Superblend™.
We invite you to learn more about the V8 cow families by visiting the ranch or our website, v8ranch.com.

HOW TO FIND
PEDIGREES ON V8 CATTLE
Our ear tags tell you everything you need to know about an unbranded calf. For a full explanation of how to read V8 Ranch ear tags, see page 162.

Many of the Brahman cattle you’ll see in person are also featured in this guide. The index (in the back of the book) gives the page number where you can find each animal’s photo and pedigree. We group our herd by cow families, so when you find a cow, her relatives will be pictured nearby.
Looking for an animal not featured in this guide? Visit our website, v8ranch.com, and enter the brand number in the search bar.
Visit the ABBA website, brahman.digitalbeef.com, for extended five-generation pedigrees, performance data, and EPDs. Under the “Animal Search” section, select “Name” to search the ABBA database. All V8 cattle are named Miss V8 or Mr. V8 followed by their private herd number. Examples: Miss V8 279/9 or Mr. V8 891/8.
+MISS 3X MUCHO GRANDE 60/5

ORIGINS
BORN AT 3X RANCH IN 1975 • ESTABLISHED AT V8 IN 1982
Miss Priss, a stunning Guzerat-type female, was the 1978 Reserve National Champion Female. She sold for the recordshattering price of $25,000 to the Vineyard family in Texas. When the Vineyards decided to get out of the Brahman business in 1982, they called Jim and offered him a deal: he could pick any of their 3X cows for $1,750 each. Jim thanked the Vineyards but told them that he really had his eye on Miss Priss. He continued: “I know you paid $25,000 for her, but I
just can’t afford that price.” Mrs. Vineyard replied, “Jim, you can have Miss Priss for $1,750, just like all of the other cows.” You see, the Vineyards loved Miss Priss, too, and they wanted her to go to a good home. Jim brought her back to Boling and took her straight to the front pasture at V8 where she spent most evenings soaking up affection from Jim and Luann’s daughters, who were delighted by Miss Priss and her docile temperament.
MODERN INFLUENCE
MISS PRISS
A mainstay cow family in the V8 herd for nearly 40 years, the influence of Miss Priss was carried by her daughters, +Miss V8 287/3 and +Miss V8 933/2. In fact, +Miss V8 933/2 produced the Reserve National Champion, Miss V8 8/4. More than 2,500 animals have pedigree tracing back to Miss Priss, and her descendants are just as active as they have ever been, producing some of our most notable animals including headliners like Mr. V8 604/7, the 2017 International Champion Bull, and Miss V8 483/8, the 2019 National Champion Female.
LINEAGE
Born May 3, 1975, and bred by Emily Dial, Miss Priss carries the 3X prefix. On the top side of her pedigree, she traces back to one of the very first V8-branded cows, Miss V-8 14th, who was born in 1944.

+MS. CLAYDESTA 203-807U5

ORIGINS
BORN AT CLAYTON WILLIAMS' RANCH IN 1986 • ESTABLISHED AT V8 IN 1988
In the 1980s, Brangus breeder and Texas oilman Clayton Williams established an elite herd of Brahman cattle. All of his cattle were named with the prefix “Claydesta”, which was created by blending Clayton’s name with his wife’s name, Modesta. The Williams hosted a special event sale at Houston

in 1988, and it was there that we purchased +Ms. Claydesta 203-807U5 for $5,000. We’d call that a smart investment, considering that we’ve seen over $2 million (and counting...) in cattle sales from this family.
CLAYDESTA 807U5
MODERN INFLUENCE
807U5’s daughter, +Miss V8 188/5, sired by +Mr. V8 700/3, is one of just two cows at V8 to produce two different International Champion daughters. +Miss V8 831/5 and +Miss V8 464/6 both hold that title. A daughter by Charley, +Miss V8 80/5, has an extraordinary 101 progeny recorded in ABBA. A third direct daughter of 807U5, +Miss V8 504/5, was also a Register of Renown Female.
LINEAGE
+Ms. Claydesta 203-807U5 is the daughter of two Houston Champions, (+)WR Mr. Suva 203 and the famous female International Champion +Miss Diamond T 432.

ORIGINS
Born and raised on the ranch in Boling, Texas, +Miss V8 805/6 was sired by +JDH Sir Avery Manso 159/7, a Liberty son that Jim purchased from J.D. Hudgins, Inc. Avery was bred to our best V8 cows, creating a tribe of powerful females, including
our beloved 805/6. A heavily muscled, deep-sided, and very feminine cow, she is the mother of national and international champions. In fact, her influence has carried worldwide through her son, three-time Houston Champion, +Mr. V8 146/8, “Sloan.”
MODERN INFLUENCE
LINEAGE
+Miss V8 805/6 boasts a pedigree that is a unique blend of Avery, Liberty, Datapack, and Imperator. Her mother, +Miss V8 827/4, also raised an International Champion Bull, Mr. V8 612/5 (sired by Powerstroke).
In early 2019, we lost +Miss V8 805/6 at the age of twelve, which means this cow family is relatively new. At this writing, the second generation is entering prime production with an already wellestablished reputation for producing a legion of power bulls and females. This family is one of the most sought after in our herd, yet we rarely offer cattle from this group for sale because we keep so many of them. +Mr. V8 146/8, +Miss V8 805/6’s son, is the breed's only three-time International Champion. At this writing, the V8 cow herd carries more influence of 805/6 than any other cow family.
Although +Miss V8 805/6 is a star in her own right, we cannot forget her two very impressive living full sisters, Miss V8 952/6 and Miss V8 71/7, both important contributors to this cow family.

If you asked Jim Williams to name his top three all-time favorite cows on the ranch, chances are he’d include +Miss V8 495/5. +MISS V8 495/5 "ROSE"

ROSES ARE RED
THE V8 ROSE COLOR STORY
People often ask us how Rose and her descendants got their interesting rusty red color. It's in their genes! Jim Williams explains: “In the 1970s, I was looking for an outcross line of cattle. Bubba Sartwelle and his family at Sartwelle Brahman Ranch had concentrated and linebred the Imperator bull in their herd for years. He gave us the pick of the cows on his ranch. We picked three dark pigmented cows. One of the cows was SBR Imperator Joy 349/4, Rose's maternal great granddam. She was the
most intensely linebred cow on the ranch to Imperator, known for his dark (sometimes, even black) pigmentation. Rose’s paternal grandsire, (+)JDH Dakota Manso 599, was also known to sometimes sire red-pigmented cattle. When we mixed the Imperator bloodline on Rose’s dam side with that of (+)JDH Dakota Manso 599, who Jim also thought was the sire of some of the best females at J.D. Hudgins, the result was the unique red tinge we now call ‘V8 Rose Red’.”

+MISS V8 410/6

A Louisiana girl, +Miss V8 410/6 was born at Watson Land and Cattle. At the time of her birth, us and the Watsons were constantly looking for powerful females to add to our partnership that has spanned decades. Mr. Hilton Watson said, “I have some good 800 calves over here,” and he sent them our way to see if we thought they would be good enough to add to the partnership. 410 was near weaning age when she unloaded off the trailer with her recip mother. The first impression was memorable! Jim recalls, “She was a knockout
when we first saw her. Daddy (Sloan) looked at me and said: ‘I don't think we have a better heifer here at V8 this year.’” That day, she was branded V8 and assigned number 410/6. Although never a national or international champion, +Miss V8 410/6 went on to become a highly decorated winner on our show string, and a family favorite. It was clear she had a promising future as a donor female and breeding piece. In 2020, at the age of 16, she passed peacefully from old age in the V8 front pasture.
MODERN INFLUENCE
Her sons: Ocho Cinco, Megastroke, Omega and 715/7 are all siring calves at V8 Ranch today, and her daughters and granddaughters are currently working, too. One daughter is Miss V8 463/6, the 2011 Reserve National Champion under Judge Pasquale Swaner. She has exceptional progeny sired by +Mr. V8 146/8 such as Miss V8 277/9. We are confident this line will be a mainstay for decades.
SHE WAS A KNOCKOUT WHEN WE FIRST SAW HER.
LINEAGE
The +Miss V8 410/6 pedigree blends some of the best of J.D. Hudgins, Double J Ranch of Johnny Jeffcoat, and V8. She goes back to 202/3 on the bottom side, the second winningest bull in the breed’s history, behind +Mr. V8 146/8 “Sloan.”

OUR COVER GIRL
+Miss V8 410/6 was undeniably one of the most photogenic cows V8 Ranch has ever produced. She was a particular favorite of Manuel Amparan, who often photographed her when he came to visit. One of Manuel's photos of +Miss V8 410/6 was even featured on the cover of The Brahman Journal. It just so happened that Manuel was at the ranch the day 410/6 passed away; we like to believe she waited for him to visit one last time so she could say a proper ‘goodbye’.

+MISS V8 165/4

BORN AT V8 IN 1990
Born in 1990, +Miss V8 165/4 is an example of the outstanding daughters produced by +Mr. V8 666/3. Her dam, +Lady Bevo 910, joined our herd from the Herman Beville Ranch in Florida. Mr. Beville’s cattle had about a quarter to a half of Indu-Brazilian blood, and when the industry shifted to a preference for larger-framed animals, his cattle were right where they needed to be. Our good friend, Marcus Shackelford, was familiar with the Beville herd, and he identified 910 as its top heifer. He and Sloan bought her for the V8 herd, and the rest is history! +Miss V8
165/4 was selected as the 1992 National Champion in Dallas, Texas, under Guatemalan breeder Neil Potter. In Houston, Judge Johnny Jeffcoat of Louisiana selected her as the 1993 International Champion. In total, +Miss V8 165/4 produced 55 offspring recorded by ABBA. A spinal injury during her early days as a donor female resulted in +Miss V8 165/4 living the rest of her life in isolation at V8 Ranch. For years, Jim and Luann's view from the window above their kitchen sink was of the majestic 165/4 in her pen. She weighed over 2,100 pounds at maturity.
MODERN INFLUENCE
Three daughters of +Miss V8 165/4, each sired by a different bull, were International Champions. The next generation produced an International Champion bull, Mr. V8 730/5, “Tomcat.” Today, the third and fourth generations are carried by the outstanding donor females +Miss V8 829/6 and Miss V8 997/6 and their sons. In 2021, Miss V8 472/9 “Magic,” a great-great granddaughter of +Miss V8 165/4, sold for the record setting price of $150,000 for one-half interest to Walters Livestock in Made for Magic IV. In 2022, she was named the Reserve National Champion Female.
LINEAGE
We’ve traced this cow family back to our original 1944 herd, beginning with Miss V8 9th, the 9th Brahman female to wear the V8 brand.

A MAGICAL PARTNERSHIP
MISS V8 472/9 “MAGIC”
It was October 2021, and we were preparing for our Made for Magic IV sale. Val Walters and Rodney Finch of Walters Livestock wanted to make the short drive down to the ranch from Brenham, Texas to look at the heifers. Jim was branding cattle that evening, so Catherine met with them to show them around. “What would you like to see first?” she asked them. They didn't have a preference, so she said “I'm going to show you the one I think you'll like best, first.” They drove the ranch roads until they arrived at the

pasture behind Catherine's house, and found recipient number 1193. The moment Val saw the fancy, red-tinged heifer calf at her side, it was love at first sight. A few weeks later, Walters Livestock Enterprises outlasted many bidders to purchase one-half interest and partner with V8 Ranch on Miss V8 472/9. Val christened the female with the perfect nickname – “Magic.” A little over a year later, Rodney showed “Magic” to the USA Reserve National Championship. And we believe, the best of “Magic” is yet to come.
“IF YOU WERE TO ASK ME, AFTER ALL THAT WE'VE BEEN THROUGH, “STILL BELIEVE IN MAGIC?”
YES I DO. OF COURSE, I DO.”
COLDPLAY
MISS V8 539/6

ORIGINS
It’s common knowledge that our beloved family patriarch Sloan Williams simply could not resist a group of Brahman cattle for sale. This deal, in particular, has achieved legendary status on the ranch. In 2004, longtime V8 customer Bert Steindorf had a group of cows for sale that included several with the VM prefix. This prefix represented Vic and Buck Maspero, lifelong friends of Sloan from his days as a rodeo producer, and highly respected South Texan friends who used predominantly JDH and V8 bloodlines. Sloan purchased the group, which had been exposed to Mr. V8 736/5, a bull Jim
MODERN INFLUENCE
had sold to Steindorf years prior. One dam, with a beautiful udder, was pregnant when the group came to V8. At weaning, the dam’s little fall-born heifer, 539/6, was selected by Sloan as a keeper out of appreciation for her mother’s features and admiration for the outcross of Maspero genetics. At this writing, 539/6 is eighteen years old, and a V8 Ranch icon. The influence of her cow family will forever remind us of Sloan’s talent for wheeling, dealing, and spotting the best of the best.
The impact of 539/6 has increased exponentially in the past few years as her daughters, granddaughters, and grandsons have entered prime production. Her flushes to El Rey and 380/6 produced key donors who have done just what we hoped for – like their mother, they have outproduced themselves at V8 Ranch.

WINNING IS JUST
THE BEGINNING
In 2020, the Miss V8 539/6 cow family produced its first National Champion in Miss V8 203/9, “Dreamgirl.” From birth, this heifer was a family favorite. Payton started calling her “Dreamgirl,” and the name stuck. We had high hopes for her future as a donor cow, especially after she set a new sales record in our July 2020 Made for Magic Online Sale when one-half interest sold to GKB Cattle. It felt like a fairytale ending (or beginning!) when, subsequently, Judge Doug Pierce selected her as National Champion as a calf.

A LIVING MATRIARCH
MISS V8 906/2

For years, in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Jim traveled to Sugarland every two months for the weaning of the heifers. (Sugarland’s manager was a good friend who let Jim get first pick.) In the spring of 1980, Jim selected Ester of Sugarland 78, the dam of Miss V8 906/2. Born in 1982, 906/2 had only 5 daughters and 4 sons in her lifetime. She was never flushed, so all of her progeny are natural calves. It’s a common misconception that embryo transfer calves are superior to natural-born calves. Yet, Miss V8 906/2
MODERN INFLUENCE
It's interesting to note that Miss V8 630/5, a foundation female in the modern group of producers in this family, was sired by +Mr. V8 189/4, meaning that she is linebred to Miss V8 906/2. Today, granddaughters and grandsons of 630/5 carry on the family tradition of excellence, which is only increasing in notoriety.
is a matriarch who dispels that very notion. She is the foundation cow behind one of our biggest groups of cattle on the ranch, a group that features many show winners and top-selling animals. Like many greats who were overlooked in their lifetimes (think: Bach, VanGogh, Thoreau), Miss V8 906/2 is just now rising to fame for her incredible contribution to the breed as a non-flush cow. Her cow family is proof that the V8 Ranch “bench” is deep, and that even our non-flush females are superior producers. 906/2

Like so many of our cattle, the Sugarland female lines combined so impressively with the V8 sires. Her sire, Mr. V8 622/2 was a grandson of +Miss V8 218/1, who was the dam of +Mr. V8 347/2, our first national champion.

When asked why he made this not-soevident choice, Jim replied: “You have to be a visionary.”

BRAHMANS WIN BIG IN 2022 BEST OF THE BARNS

Search any list of the most popular cattle breeds in the U.S., and you’ll find superstars like Black Angus, Charolais, Hereford, Simmental, Red Angus, Gelbvieh, Limousin, Highlands, Holsteins, and Texas Longhorns. You might, on occasion, see Brahmans make these lists, but not nearly as often as we think they should!
That’s why V8 Ranch was delighted to be nominated by our peers for the 2022 Best of the Barns Awards. Created by The Pulse and sponsored by Sullivan Supply, this prestigious awards program is a highly anticipated annual event amongst those on the showring circuit. Being grouped with some of the cattle industry’s most respected leaders was an honor –and an opportunity to bring more attention to the Brahman breed. When we told fellow Brahman enthusiasts about this opportunity, they rallied, casting 9231 votes to a secure a win for V8
Ranch as the 2022 Best Show Cattle Operation
To demonstrate just how firmly we believe Brahmans belong in the shortlist of top U.S. cattle breeds, we offered up the unthinkable – wearing burnt orange to College Station if V8 Ranch won the title. As diehard Aggies, we can think of no greater sacrifice than donning the color of the Texas Longhorns; it’s our way of showing just how much it means to see Brahmans take centerstage amongst so many other worthy breeds and cattle operations. Thank you to everyone who supported the ranch and the Brahman breed. We’ll see you at College Station!

ORIGINS
BORN AT J.D. HUDGINS, INC. IN 1998 • ESTABLISHED AT V8 IN 2004
Before Marri Holly was known as the big grey cow grazing in our pastures, she was known as a powerful show female that was difficult to get around in the show ring. In fact, in 2000, when Judge Marcus Shackleford slapped her as National Champion in Dallas, we were right there with Miss V8 716/5, that year’s Reserve Champion. Raised by the J. Boone Koonce family of J.D. Hudgins, Inc., this JDH female carried the T brand on her right shoulder. We’re most closely linked to our cousins at the J.D. Hudgins Ranch by the Forgason and
Koonce families. The T brand stands for Temple Koonce. In our family, we knew him as “Uncle Temple,” Mollie's uncle. Sometime after Marri Holly's show career, Johnny Joyce brokered the sale of this popular female to Watson Land and Cattle. After keeping her at the Watson ranch in Jennings, Louisiana for about a year, Mr. Hilton Watson, longtime business partner of V8, said, “Send the cow to Jim.” Marri Holly returned to Wharton County to stay, and her outcross genetics continue to make an impact today.

ORIGINS
BORN AT J.D. HUDGINS, INC. IN 2002 • ESTABLISHED AT V8 IN 2008
+JDH Ms. Water Manso 239 was born in 2002 at J.D. Hudgins, Inc., and raised by Adrian and Karen (Mangum) Gubert, who branded the XL shoulder brand. When the Mangum division decided to sell their cows, of course, Sloan was there waiting. He could never resist a group of cows for sale, so imagine his excitement when it was a group of JDH cows from right down the road! Sloan picked up Jim, Luke, and Catherine and drove them to the “Herding Ground” pasture at JDH to size up the group, but he’d already made up his mind, and he could barely contain his excitement. Sloan bought the entire group of about 75 females. Bubba
Hudgins had allowed Adrian and Karen to breed their cows to (+)JDH Sir Liberty Manso; he had even advised them on which cows he thought would mate best with the bull. The deal was that Bubba would get to keep any bull calves, and the Guberts would get the heifers. There were three daughters of Liberty in the group, and Water was our top pick. She came to V8 as a five-year-old cow and her first flush to +Mr. V8 287/5, “Superstroke” resulted in +Miss V8 138/7, one of our top donors today. But it was the flushes to +Mr. V8 380/6 that produced quality in volume and cemented her place in the history books at V8.

+MISS V8 571/3

At V8, our respect for the Brahman females has always been based on keeping females that produced daughters better than themselves. Our goal has always been to develop and breed the best set of females in the breed. One of the cornerstones of the now famous signature V8 look is +Miss V8 571/3. Born and raised on the ranch, she spent her lifetime at V8 producing great females time and time again. She was a dark pigmented female, one of the first in
our herd, and a front pasture cow who was the definition of femininity. This cow and her offspring have spread throughout the world and those that owned them wanted more. She was inducted into the ABBA Register of Renown in 1993. Throughout her lifetime at V8, we retained 8 replacement females. We sold 17.5 sons and daughters out of her, which at the time of her death in 2003, averaged $15,750 each.
MODERN INFLUENCE
Today, the +Miss V8 571/3 female line is mostly carried by descendants of her daughter, +Miss V8 606/5. The fourth generation, Miss V8 674/8 is one of our top young donors. Two daughters of 571/3, +Miss V8 600/4 and +Miss V8 606/5, each produced International Champion Females. In her lifetime, her dark pigment, which was very unique at the time, was always a conversation piece. Often, someone will say they have a dark pigmented V8 animal in their herd. We can almost always predict that in some way — it stems from +Miss V8 571/3.

+Miss V8 571/3 can be traced back to original ABBA foundation stock, originating with foundation cow Martha Ann 147.

HEIFER SALES

In 2020, we began hosting our Made for Magic Online Sales. Twice a year, in July and October, we select and feature the top cut from our heifer calf crop. These females are the cream of the crop at V8: elite genetics from our most sought after cow families and sires.
MAGICAL INVESTORS' CLUB
What do the buyers of Made for Magic cows have in common? More than just the highest bid. They believe in cow families. They value strong genetics and V8's discerning eye. They are passionate about the Brahman breed and see themselves as stewards of the animals and resources entrusted to them. They share a strong work ethic, entrepreneurial grit, and a vision for the future of their herds and the industry at large. They’re actively invested in the ‘here and now’, but they’re also thinking ahead. They see the value of a strong investment. And most importantly, they respect a cattleman’s culture where community and generosity of spirit foster mutual success.

THE GOLDEN GIRLS
At V8 Ranch, we produce performing cattle, but that doesn’t mean we shy away from buying cattle that meet our standards. On the contrary! Our most famous cow family matriarchs, like Miss Priss and Claydesta 807U5, underscore the positive influence outside genetics bring to our program.

THE POWER OF THE
OUTCROSS

We’re continually searching for an ideal outcross female with the potential to be a foundation cow for the next great line of cattle. As such, we’ve brought in replacement females from a handful of outside ranches, and in the future they may join these powerful donor females. Although the following donor females (and their progeny) do not trace back to the core V8 cow families, don’t underestimate their importance; they are promising test plots for future matriarch status.
As with our breeding choices, we use our highly trained eyes to select for phenotype, first and foremost. Then, we consider pedigree and/or any unique traits such as color, disposition or being polled. When mated with V8’s strong, award-winning sires, we’re confident that these cows will also make magic.

V8 RANCH PRIVATE FACEBOOK GROUP
Everyone at V8 Ranch loved the idea of bringing our Brahman-loving friends and fans together into a space where we can chat about all things related to Brahman ranching. At this writing, the V8 Ranch Facebook group has 2700 members. One of the most popular features is the “Ask Jim” series – private video chats with Jim Williams where he answers questions submitted by members of the group. Want to join the conversation? Want to ask a question? Have something to share? We hope to see you on our private Facebook group, V8 Ranch - Fans and Friends.

A BRAND THAT MEANS SOMETHING
Behind those two simple characters — a letter and a number — there's a century-old history of pure bloodlines, skilled expertise, and uncompromising standards. V8 is shorthand for a host of sought after traits. It is also the symbol of our singular focus on producing one of the world's most exceptional Brahman herds.
FAMILY MATTERS
For four generations, V8 Ranch has remained steadfastly independent and family-owned. That gives us the flexibility to maintain an old-school commitment to our skills, training, and history. We only employ skilled tradespeople who are as passionate about Brahman cattle ranching as we are. Our staff has become a part of our extended family, and they deserve accolades for making the V8

brand a highly revered name in the Brahman cattle industry. But, V8 Ranch family members are the only individuals authorized to brand a cow or bull with the V8 stamp of excellence. Why? Because the meaning behind the process is so very important.
THE POWER OF THE BRAND
The V8 branding iron represents an original bloodline that now roams six continents. It reflects the passionate men and women who have devoted their lives to creating a superior Brahman breeding process and selection program. We stake our reputation on each animal we deem worthy of the V8 brand, a symbol of our guarantee, our commitment, and our promise of integrity.

WHAT DO THE BRANDS MEAN?
A NUMERICAL NECESSITY
Branding time at V8 resembles an old western replete with cowboys, campfires, and cattle. But branding cattle is more than just a romanticized ranching tradition; it has purpose and meaning. In order to enter the Herd Register, the American Brahman Breeders Association requires that both a visible ownership brand and an individual number be branded on each animal. The “V8” branding you’ll find on the left hip of our cattle represents the ownership brand; the numbers branded on the lower rear of each leg identify the individuals.
ASSIGNING BRANDS TO EACH ANIMAL
To mark our individual animals, V8 Ranch uses a chronological sequence of numbers based on calving dates. The first V8 animal was branded as 1. Number 2 followed, and we continued sequentially until we reached number 999. The sequence then followed with branding as 1/1
(read One over One), with the bottom number representing the thousands. So, animal 123/4 (One Twenty-Three over Four) is the 4,123rd animal born on the ranch. Heifers and bulls have their own set of numbers, which means there is a Miss V8 123/4 and a Mr. V8 123/4. As of this printing, the next available numbers are 815/9 for a female and 381/9 for a bull.
TO 999/9 AND BEYOND!
What happens after the 9,999th bull or female is born on the ranch? This has been a recent topic of discussion within the family. Should we continue with 0/10 for the 10,000 heifer or bull? Or should we roll over and start again with 1? We’re still undecided and we’d like to know - what is your preference? To learn more about our branding process, visit our Instagram page, @v8ranch, and look for the “Q&A Branding” highlight.
THE SHOULDER BRANDS OF V8
Initially, when Sloan purchased the herd, all the cattle carried the V8 brand on their left hip. This tradition still holds true today. Because Jim was older when the herd was purchased, his cattle are branded the same way as Sloan’s, using the same V8 brand. However, as the family grew, Sloan & Mollie wanted to find a way to make sure all their children and grandchildren would be able to continue their heritage as Brahman breeders.
So, they gave each child and grandchild the best heifer calf of that year’s calf crop. Sloan and Jim decided to come up with a way to let the children know which cattle were theirs when they drove through the pastures. They decided on shoulder brands, named for each of their granddaughters and great-grandchildren, which can now be seen on a number of the ranch’s cattle. C P K

THE
REMARKABLE REGISTER OF RENOWN
EXPLANATION OF SYMBOLS IN A REGISTERED NAME
EARNING THE REGISTER OF RENOWN PLUS SIGN SYMBOL
The ABBA Genetic Merit Award program uses the plus symbol (“+”) in front of a cow’s name to designate her Register of Renown status. Designed to recognize the sires and dams of showring winners at ABBA-approved shows, Register of Renown points are accumulated beginning January 1 through December 31 of each year. A minimum of 75 points must be earned by two or more of her produce for a dam to achieve Register of Renown status. Points are awarded for Individual Classes, Champions, Get of Sire and Produce of Dam classes (both natural and embryo). Register of Renown inductions are announced during the annual Membership Meeting held at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
In addition to the “+” symbol, you may also notice a few other symbols as part of the ABBA Genetic Merit Awards:

HERD SIRES

HEADS OF OUR HERD
COW MAGIC + BULL MAGIC = THE KEY TO SUCCESS
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: “The magic is in the cows.” Behind every one of our great V8 Brahman Bulls, there is a great Brahman cow. We’re proud of their pedigree. And we work hard to uphold our reputation as a top seedstock provider of high-performing, structurally sound Brahman bulls. Bred to represent the best of both worlds, each bull comes with documented performance and breeding guarantees. These bulls are able to handle heat and drought conditions, yet they still have desirable carcass traits. They are strong, yet gentle. And, they are muscular, yet still able to move well thanks to our focus on structural quality.
Although we have established a tradition of selecting a Bull of the Year that we expect to impact the Brahman breed, we don’t do so to build an image of just one bull. All of our bulls are part of a breeding program and they are designed to complement one another in both pedigree and appearance.
Breeding truly superior livestock is no accident. Genuinely outstanding genetic contributors can nearly always be predicted, but you have to start with known qualities and reliable material. Our program is designed to grow, develop, and adapt to the constantly changing industry. This results in progeny that improve with each generation.
It’s why we’re passionate about selling semen on every bull in our battery (unless limited by inventory). It’s also why we make it a point to have sons and daughters from our top bulls available for purchase at every sale. We believe in sharing our genetics as a way to contribute to the entire breed's future.
Never before has it been more important to properly select the herd bull you’ll use on your cows. There is one overriding constant, both in the pasture and in intelligent AI and ET programs - it takes the use of outstanding herd bulls to accomplish herd and breed improvements. In short, exceptional herd sires are essential to any program’s success.
WE BELIEVE IN SHARING OUR GENETICS AS A WAY TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE ENTIRE BREED'S FUTURE.
+MR. V8 146/8 SLOAN
2018, 2019, AND 2020 INTERNATIONAL CHAMPION 2020 BULL OF THE YEAR
#9 BULL IN THE BREED FOR DOCILITY
+Mr. V8 146/8 entered the Brahman scene with a bang, becoming the first and only Brahman bull to win the International Brahman Show three times. He brings thickness and muscle, power for days, soundness, and excellent breed character all while maintaining acceptable birth weights on his calves. “Sloan’s” calves are consistently high quality, with excellent feet and legs, muscle, thickness, and style.
After years without a name, in early 2021, we decided to name him after our beloved patriarch, Sloan Williams because both he and +Mr. V8 146/8, were the best of the best. In 2022, +Mr. V8 146/8 was inducted into the ABBA Register of Renown. He is one of the youngest bulls to ever receive this honor. Also, in 2022, his progeny won the National Champion Get of Sire.

One of the most impressive sons of +Mr. V8 458/7 “Noble”, Mr. V8 179/8 “Big Mack” could be one of, if not the, heaviestboned bulls we’ve ever raised at V8 Ranch. Visitors to the ranch fell in love with “Big Mack” after seeing this darkpigmented bull breeding cows at the ranch, a bull we have heavily bred and flushed to at V8 Ranch.
In addition to his muscle and eye appeal, “Big Mack” has a clean sheath and a strong, level topline. We see him making a big impact. His mother, Miss V8 363/6, was the 2005 National Champion Female and was one of our most impressive donor females with plenty of length of body and style. POLLED CATTLE

V8 RANCH POLLED CATTLE
POISED TO POLL
V8 Ranch is no stranger to polled cattle. Our first polled female to gain notoriety was Miss V8 490/3 (P); she was the first polled International Champion Red Female in 1989. At the time, the fact that she was polled wasn’t considered noteworthy; it was her quality that made her special. We stumbled into polled cattle by selecting for quality decades ago.
As Jim Williams puts it: “We’ve been looking to develop polled cattle for quite some time but haven’t rushed it because our primary concern is quality polled cattle, not just polled cattle.” You see, when polled cattle first became popular, anything polled would sell. In some ways, people were single-trait selecting for polled, which meant quality was not the top priority. We refused to do that. Over the years, however, breeders have course-corrected, and today there are many good polled cattle out there. In fact, the polled market is very competitive. It’s more important than ever to produce outstanding polled cattle and that’s exactly the space we want to be in.
For many years, V8 Ranch has primarily been a closed herd – we didn’t buy outside genetics. In fact, we hadn’t actively and systematically sought out cattle since the purchase of our original matriarchs when the U.S. Sugar Corporation’s cattle dispersed in the mid-1980s. After carefully studying the herd, Jim, Luann, Mollie, and Sloan Williams purchased their top animals, incorporating females including the one that produced (+)Mr. V8 202/3.
A generation later, Jim, Luann, Catherine, and Luke harnessed the same level of focused research, dedication, and determination to build a foundation of polled Brahmans that is second to none. One of the major concerns with polled cattle in the United States is that these cattle are very closely related, tracing back to several lines of cattle. In addition to adding genetics from top USA polled breeders, the strategic purchase of NCC Municipal, who hails from one of Australia’s very best Brahman breeders, brings a few distinct advantages for USA based Brahman breeders. Jim Williams explains: “Municipal’s sire was an International Grand Champion bull, out of one of J.D. Hudgins’ top bulls, Woodson. I don't think any of those Woodson cattle have been incorporated into the polled line. And, Municipal’s dam is a full Australian animal, so she would be a complete outcross to any of the lines in the United States.
“At V8 Ranch, we’ve always been focused on the future of the breed. It’s how we created the progressive V8 signature style, and it’s how we’ve bred for optimal productivity, adaptability, and performance,” explains Jim Williams. “At present, less than 5% of our herd is polled, but it will be growing. Ultimately, we plan to poll cattle from each of our cow families to create entirely new families. Without question, the demand for polled cattle here in the United States will only increase, both in purebred and commercial markets. We’re thrilled to see the results of combining our award-winning genetics with these outcross strong polled genetics.”

Municipal offers excellent breed character, depth of body, and good muscle shape. He's very balanced and both he and his sire have a tight, clean sheath. Being sired by Clanton, he is an outcross to every V8 Ranch female and 99% of the polled cattle here in the United States. His genetics offer polled breeders a chance to incorporate the Woodson genetics into their herds. His sire +Mr. V8 279/7 (P) stems from one of the original V8 polled cow families, Miss V8 491/3 (P), from Sugarland breeding.

THE REAL HEROES OF THE SHOW CIRCUIT: THE PASSIONATE, CARING NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL BREEDERS WE ARE LUCKY TO CALL FRIENDS.

SHOW CATTLE
MOVING IN THE RIGHT CIRCLES
We love standing in the show ring. It’s an exhilarating feeling getting to showcase our cattle to the public and share examples of the quality females and bulls who will eventually play starring roles in our breeding program. We also appreciate the competitive nature of livestock shows because, whether we place or not, each show pushes us to continually elevate our game in our quest for excellence. But there is something even better than standing in the show ring, and that’s connecting with the ever-widening circle of friends at these events. Whether reuniting with old friends or meeting newcomers to the world of Brahman breeding, the conversations, laughs, hugs, and occasionally even tears, create invaluable bonds that last a lifetime.
Often, you’ll hear us rattle off the stats from our V8 show string, the top Brahman cattle from our herd that we select to exhibit each year at the National Brahman Show, the Houston Livestock Show, and the

ABBA Approved Point Shows in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Since 1976, we have exhibited 28 National or International Grand Champion Brahman bulls and 37 National or International Grand Champion Brahman females for a total of 65 National or International Grand Championships. This is the highest number from any one ranch in Brahman history, and we’re proud of that achievement.
But we’re equally proud of the relationships that have been born or nurtured at these shows – a circle of support, knowledge-sharing, and camaraderie that endures beyond those fleeting moments in the show ring. If you’ve got an hour or two, we’ll gladly share just a few of our favorite stories about great times with the real heroes of the show circuit – the passionate, caring national and international breeders we are lucky to call friends.

V8 RANCH REIGNS SUPREME
AT 2023 CATTLEMEN'S CONGRESS
The Third Annual 2023 Cattlemen’s Congress showcased over 10,000 beef cattle - 28 breeds from 42 states and 4 Canadian provinces. We were overwhelmed to finish our day in the show ring with four champions, including the Supreme American Female and the Reserve Supreme Champion American Bull, all carry the V8 holding brand on their hips.
Miss V8 279/9 was selected as Grand Champion Brahman Female. Her bull calf, Mr. V8 333/9 “Edgar”, completed the championship pair. Miss V8 279/9 then went on to win the Supreme Champion American Female title. Mr. V8 891/8 “Pathfinder” was selected as Grand Champion Brahman Bull. Co-owned by V8 and Gary and Kathy Buchholz of GKB Cattle, “Pathfinder” then went on to win the Reserve Supreme American Bull title. Competing against the best breeders and cattle in all other American breed categories, this is the first time that purebred Brahmans have earned Supreme titles at Cattlemen’s Congress.
Mr. V8 910/8 “Axel”, owned by Stafford Cattle Company and Walters Livestock Enterprises, was
selected as Reserve Grand Champion Brahman Bull. Miss V8 532/9, sold in Made for Magic V and owned by Gary and Kathy Buchholz of GKB Cattle, was selected as Reserve Grand Champion Brahman Female.

The Grand Champion Cow, Grand Champion Bull, and Reserve Grand Champion Bull are progeny of +Mr. V8 146/8 “Sloan”. Miss V8 532/9 is sired by +Mr. V8 322/8, 2020 National Champion and 2020 Grand Champion Bull at the Cattlemen’s Congress.
These wins, however, aren’t just for the people you see standing in the event photos. There are many dedicated people – in our ranching operation and beyond – who play crucial roles in bringing these cattle to the show ring. We celebrate this achievement with the fine folk who deliver our feed, our embryologist, and even our banker. Most importantly, we celebrate with you; seeing Brahmans highlighted in a Supreme Drive is truly a win for everyone passionate about the breed.
STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE
ART AND SCIENCE: THE ULTIMATE SUPERBLEND™
Animal husbandry is also known as animal science. We’re proud that the practice of breeding and raising livestock is rightfully recognized as a scientific discipline. But the word ‘science’ denotes a cold, impartial, data-driven approach that doesn’t pay justice to the heart – and the art – of cattle breeding. Just like how a great chef is more than a ‘food scientist’, a talented breeder brings a passion, instinct, and unique eye to his work that goes beyond genetics and performance record data.
To breed great cattle, it takes a blend of both art and science, which is why our main focus is on phenotype. Our very own cattle master, Jim Williams, said it best with this quote in 1988:
At V8 Ranch, we don’t just raise cattle; we’ve raised eight generations of ranchers who, from an early age, have been – and still are – continually mentored by a master on how to visually select cattle; how to correct the faults in one animal with the strengths of another; and, how to breed superior bulls and females with the special X (or dare we say, V8?) factor that cannot be replicated with mere data analysis and numbercrunching.
Yes, we monitor and measure cattle from conception through their productive life. Yes, we analyze genetics to achieve maximum performance. But we also, measure our animals on a subjective basis. We don’t just exhibit our production for promotion, we exhibit to see where they stand within the breed. The goal is always to ensure that whether they remain in our herd, or serve as seedstock for someone else, our cattle are superior in every possible way.
Over 30 years later, those words still ring true. Technology and automation have their place, but they cannot replace a well-trained rancher’s discerning observation and judgment.
First and foremost, great chefs, artists, designers –and, yes, ranchers – know the ins and outs of their craft. Then, they use that knowledge to work with a signature passion and style. Ultimately, it is the public who sets the value of what they produce. We are honored that industry experts, judges, and our customers all appreciate and value the cattle we produce using our uncompromising V8 Standards of Excellence.
To better understand the V8 Standard of Excellence, we asked Jim Williams to explain what he looks for when making breeding selections to produce the ideal V8 Brahman cow or bull. His selection criteria follows.
THE DAY MAY COME WHEN THE ART OF BREEDING CATTLE CAN BE AUTOMATED, BUT TODAY, THE EYE OF THE MASTER STILL PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN PEDIGREED LIVESTOCK.

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE
The V8 Standards of Excellence don’t end with the traits we look for in the preceding diagrams, we also assess cattle for maturity, overall structure, movement, and pigmentation.

MATURITY
At V8, we raise cattle with performance in the long run. We embrace the youthful appearance of our young calves knowing they will gain more thickness and muscle with maturity. As calves, their heights and weights may record lower than our competitors, but they have the performance they need at maturity. Typically, too much maturity in a juvenile calf indicates that the animal doesn’t have long-term growth potential.
V8 Ranch has strong visual parameters for what cattle should look like during each monthly growth stage. For example, one of our National Champion Females, Miss V8 425/5, got the gate at her first show because she didn’t show as much condition and maturity as the others in her class. Two years later, at maturity, she was the National Grand Champion in Dallas.

It takes years of experience, and a trained eye, to project how cattle are going to grow. Over time, we have learned which calves will get better as they age, and which ones will work best when young, but lack competitive edge as they mature. Consider two of our sires who were full brothers: Mr. V8 191/7 and Mr. V8 194/7. Both bulls were outstanding, but different in type. As calves, 194/7 would win the class and 191/7 would stand about fourth. But at 18 months, the trend reversed. Whereas 191/7 was overpowering as a mature bull and practically unbeatable, 194/7 consistently placed third or fourth in the class because with his quicker maturing pattern, he had a more moderate size at maturity. Conversely, Mr. V8 191/7 was a very impressive mature bull; the last time we showed him in Houston, he was named Reserve International Champion.

STRUCTURE AND MOVEMENT
At V8 Ranch, we place a strong emphasis on structural correctness and integrity. We want our cattle to walk and travel well with a good length of stride. When viewed while walking away, an animal should show base width. Observable base width in a traveling animal indicates natural thickness and muscle. When viewed while approaching, cattle should be correct on their front legs, too. Jim elaborates, “A slight outward toeing out doesn’t bother me too much; I am far more critical about toeing in because cattle that are pigeon-toed tend to be out at the knee as well as the shoulders.”
Finally, when traveling, cattle should also demonstrate a smooth length of stride while maintaining a level top and spine. Short strides indicate structural problems that interfere with longevity. When an animal is on the move, its topline should stay level and not raise up or roach in the middle. Roaching is indicative of a structure problem originating at the feet and legs. A steep rump usually indicates a lower pin setting, and causes cattle to be sickle hocked and travel with their feet up under their body. Poorly structured animals do not have durability and, therefore, have no place in our pastures or yours.
QUALITY ABOVE ALL ELSE.
JIM WILLIAMSAt V8, we view pigmentation like ice cream flavors – everybody has a different preference (white, red-tinged, or dark), but it’s all ice cream. And we care less about the flavor than about the quality of the ice cream. In other words, quality is our #1 selection criteria. Our pigmentation preference is for a moderately colored animal with a dark black nose and a good, black long switch. Here is what we don’t find acceptable: a light-colored nose (also called a split nose), which has white pigmentation up the middle of the nose; white eyelashes; white at the top of the tail switch that fades into the black switch. Once lighter pigmentation issues are eliminated, personal preference comes into play. At V8, much of our herd has darker pigment, because we like that coloring. Red spots or a little bit of speckling are to be expected with darker pigmented cattle sometimes; these variations are part of that color pattern. Also, if white pigmentation is the preferred color, you can easily cross darker pigmented animals to a snow white bull that can keep the offspring white. +JDH Sir Avery Manso never sired a dark pigmented calf. All white with a few light red areas on their head and back. Ultimately, quality matters more to us than pigmentation variation.
PIGMENT
New technologies, DNA markers, genomics – there are a lot of exciting developments defining the future of Brahman breeding. But it doesn’t change the need to breed a durable animal that is sound on its feet and legs and able to live a long life in the pasture. Thus far, there are no scientific markers for identifiable traits like feet and legs. There is an EPD for ‘stayability’, but that doesn’t distill “sound” or “not sound” into a simple scientific question. The goal may be to get more economical cattle that require less maintenance, but the process is not based on absolutes. Some big cattle are easy-fleshing; so are some little cattle. Some little cattle are hard-keeping; so are some big cattle. On the whole, large-framed cattle aren’t as easy-doing in the pasture, and smaller-framed cattle don’t have as much performance about them. We believe in building a herd with moderate cattle (and some just a tick larger than moderate), because nature keeps pulling the cattle back down to a smaller frame. That one larger-framed animal can change a generation by improving the frame score one level.

FOR BEING A V8 VIP
If you’re reading these words, then you’ve probably already read much of the text featured in this Herd Reference Guide. Thank you for your interest in our livestock, our ranch, and our history. We consider our customers and loyal fans to be V8 VIPs, and we do our best to spoil them every chance we get. If you’d also like first dibs at stall party prices, special gifts, and invitations to our special events and parties, we encourage you to join our mailing list at v8ranchvip.com.
An animal from V8 is more than just a Brahman — V8 cattle represent an original bloodline that now roams four hemispheres. It reflects the passionate men and women who have devoted their lives to creating a superior Brahman breeding process and elevation program. Our family stakes its entire reputation on each head of cattle we deem worthy of the V8 brand. It symbolizes our guarantee, our commitment, and our promise of integrity.
Sure, there are quicker, cheaper ways to bring cattle to market, but that's not what we're about. In an ever-growing and competitive beef industry, V8 Ranch has always gone out of it's way to occupy a spot unto ourselves. It takes extra effort to breed, raise — and yes, even to buy — our cattle, but we think it's well worth it. Our customers think so too.
Owning a V8 makes you a part of the extended V8 Ranch Family, and that means much more than just a bill of sale or a registration paper. We open our homes and our hearts with the hope that clients leave our ranch as friends. Our goal is to not only create opportunities to buy, but more importantly, opportunities to connect.
We look forward to helping you, The Williams Family and the V8 Ranch Team
