WHAT IS A V8 SUPERBLEND? Whether bull or a female, an animal belongs to the cow family of its dam. Often, we will breed animals from prominent cow families with bulls who boast the power from one of our other cow families. The result is what we call a Superblend™. As you explore the pedigree of our cattle, you’ll notice the blending of multiple cow families across generations of cattle. While the primary designation for our cattle is always determined by their dam's cow family, we have created a Superblend™ label to recognize animals hailing from a blend of two exceptional cow families. For example, +Miss V8 33/8 in the Rose cow family (Rose is her maternal grand dam), also blends with the Claydesta 807U5 cow family through her sire +Mr. V8 191/7. Look for the Superblend™ icon to identify cattle that represent a mix from more than one cow family.

FINDING MAGIC IN A WORLD FULL OF ADVERSITY Welcome Friends, At this writing, we’re experiencing severe drought, sky-high gas prices, inflation, and more. But even when we’re world-weary, there are reasons to feel good about the future. I’ve always believed in taking an aggressive, progressive, and positive approach to our breeding program, no matter the external conditions. It’s good to rest, just not on one’s laurels. In our last sale, Miss V8 472/9 “Magic” sold one half-interest for a record-breaking $150,000. She is now one of the most popular, well-loved Brahman females on the national circuit with multiple division wins in her first year. “Magic” isn’t a fluke; she’s the result of an intentional, strategic program that responds to – and sometimes creates – the most sought-after traits and trends within the Brahman breed. For this sale, we hand-picked heifers with the genetics that will serve your herds now, and well into the future. I hope you’ll visit us on the ranch so we can share our long-term vision, and explain, in detail, why we selected these females to shape the next phase in the evolution of our breed. Right now, we could all use a little bit of magic. We guarantee you’ll find plenty right in our front pasture. Yours truly,

Jim Williams

We always order our sale lots by birthdate, and it’s especially exciting when a heifer of this caliber leads the sale. Sometimes you just get lucky, and I sure did when I bought the dam of Lot 1 from my cousin, Lana Jo, at J.D. Hudgins. Although Lot 1’s dam was 11 years old at the time, I knew she was special and that I could mate her to Mr. V8 322/8 for some outcross genetics. Phenotypically they were a great match: she has a lot of depth of body and he has tremendous length and a straight topline. When her first flush produced this knockout of a heifer, it confirmed that she’s going to have a bright future as a donor cow at V8.

Lot 1, Miss V8 532/9, is sired by our 2020 National Champion, Mr. V8 322/8, who is a son of +Mr. V8 380/6 of the Rose cow family. An incredible show bull, he’s proving to be an even better breeding bull; in his first calf crop, he sired the popular Miss V8 472/9 “Magic” who sold for one-half interest at a record setting $150,000 to Walters Livestock. “Magic” has gone on to enjoy an impressive first season on the tanbark.

Over the years, we’ve had considerable success with blending V8 and JDH genetics, and this heifer is exactly why the combination of the two historic bloodlines works. She has the striking profile, length of body, style, and balance that are paramount at V8, combined with an abundance of thickness and muscle. We believe the “magic is in the cows” and there are some legendary females in Miss V8 532/9’s history. But there's also three different Vanguard sires in her three-generation pedigree that complete her unique genetic portrait. Her EPDs for seven different traits place her in the top 10% (or better) for the breed; she ranks in the top 1% for weaning weight and the top 3% for yearling weight. These performance-oriented traits are perfectly balanced and complemented by a CED (Calving Ease Direct) of 6.81 (top 5%) and a total maternal EPD of 29 (top 1%.) If you only want to own a few good ones, think seriously about making Lot 1 one of them. She’d be an asset to any herd in the world.

THE POWER

OF THE OUTCROSS At V8 Ranch, we produce performing cattle, but that doesn’t mean we shy away from buying cattle that meet our standards. On the contrary! Our most famous cow family matriarchs, like Miss Priss and Claydesta 807U5, underscore the positive influence outside genetics bring to our program. We’re continually searching for an ideal outcross female with the potential to be a foundation cow for the next great line of cattle. As such, we bring in females from a handful of outside ranches. Although the outcross donor females (and their progeny) do not trace back to the core V8 cow families, don’t underestimate their importance; they are promising test pilots for future matriarch status. As with our breeding choices, we use our highly trained eyes to select for phenotype, first and foremost. Then, we consider pedigree, performance records, and/or any unique traits such as color, disposition or being polled. When mated with V8’s strong, award-winning sires, we’re confident that these cows will also make magic.

Lot 2 has all the makings of a front pasture cow. Beautifully balanced and attractive from the profile, she’s been a standout with visitors this spring, with many singling her out based on her phenotype. She is very feminine and moves with grace and authority, keeping her head up and her neck extended for that elegant look. Visitors become even more excited when they realize she also boasts a royal pedigree. Miss V8 538/9 is a V8 Superblend™, blending the +Miss V8 165/4 cow family with Rose through her sire, National Champion Mr. V8 322/8. Her dam, Miss V8 997/6, is the dam of our herd sire +Mr. V8 933/7 “Yeti.” If you know V8 females, that bottom line of cows (997/6, +58/6, +73/5, and +165/4) is just about as good as it gets. Miss V8 997/6 has generated over $465,000 in sales from her direct sons and daughters, +Mr. V8 380/6 and she’s still in production today, working alongside 8 of her daughters that we have kept for MR. V8 322/8 replacements. +Miss V8 33/8

S: D:

Look at a photo of 997/6, and you can envision what this heifer will look like as a cow. A mainstay in our front pasture, she is one big, powerful female, weighing in at nearly a ton. The +Miss V8 165/4 cow family has produced five different International or National Champions, including V8 legends such as “Magic,” “George,” and of course, Lot 2’s maternal sibling, “Yeti.”

(+)JDH Karu Manso 800 MISS V8 997/6 +Miss V8 58/6

Please study Miss V8 538/9’s noteworthy EPDs. She ranks in the top 15% for eight different traits including the top 1% for WW, YW, TM, and CW, with a low birthweight. She may be the greenest heifer in the sale (thanks to a poor milking recip), but if you know V8 cattle, they just get better with time. Based on the predictability of her cow family’s history, we’re confident that this heifer will be a pleasure to own and breed.

Lot 3 is a sale attraction, both in pedigree and presence. A beautiful, yet powerfully designed female, she has that hardto-find combination of muscle and style. A V8 Superblend™, Miss V8 543/9 comes from the +Miss V8 410/6 cow family, blended with the +Miss V8 805/6 family through her sire, +Mr. V8 146/8 “Sloan.” The pictures and documentation presented on these pages should paint a clear picture of the potency of the great +Miss V8 410/6 cow family; we all know what an enormous impact the three-time Houston Champion, +Mr. V8 146/8 “Sloan”, has had on the Brahman breed. Blending the two produced this masterpiece.

The “Sloan” cattle are the real deal - not just at V8 Ranch, but worldwide. At a young age, “Sloan” has produced an impressive list of high-sellers and show winners of both sexes; he is here to stay. Miss V8 543/9’s dam is a big, impressive daughter of +Mr. V8 380/6, out of our past Reserve National Champion female, Miss V8 463/7. 77/8 is a young donor female, but she has already produced two daughters we have kept as replacement females. A ¾ sister to this heifer, Miss V8 277/9, is one of the leading heifers on our show string, winning Grand Champion at San Antonio, Cattlemen’s Congress, and the Belton Heart of Texas show in 2022. She will be a contender at the National in the fall.

Miss V8 543/9 has a light birthweight of 65 pounds, and her EPD’s tell a story of top-shelf performance, ranking in the top 2% for WW and top 1% for YW. We lost the +410/6 cow in 2020; it is now up to her descendants to carry on the family line. With females like this, it shouldn’t be difficult.

Selling one-half interest. You could say that this heifer is a dream that has been 50 years in the making. I’ve always loved solid black cattle, dating back to Miss V8 914/1, one of the original V8 cows we moved here from Center when we first purchased the V8 herd in the early seventies. Since then, I’ve been on the lookout for good black cattle with the goal of breeding them. When I became aware of +JME Mr Suva Crat 225 (P), who sired some beautiful black females for the Candlers in Florida, I immediately ordered a shipment of his semen for our fall flush.

S: D:

I flushed three of our best dark-pigmented donors to the bull to try him out. What better female for the test than our magnificent donor Miss V8 507/7? Sired by +Mr. V8 380/6, she is out of +Mr. V8 146/8’s dam, the incomparable +Miss V8 805/6. She makes up a group of full siblings that includes CSCC Mr. Suva Didor 163 the National Champion +Miss V8 293/8 and Mr. V8 365/8 “Tank,” among others. It was the +JME MR SUVA CRAT 225 (P) confidence I have in the cow families at V8 that pushed me to take a chance - breeding a new +JME Ms Manso 7 (P) bull in the hopes of realizing my longtime dream of creating a line of black Brahman cattle. +Mr. V8 380/6 We had two black heifers born from the mating of 507/7 and 225. Peas in a pod, we called MISS V8 507/7 them Midge and Smidge. After this flush, we have decided to breed this bull to many, many +Miss V8 805/6 more V8 donors. Miss V8 554/9 “Smidge” is a stand-out female – a sharp-featured, feminine heifer with sound structure. She combines length, style, and balance with a unique, attentiongrabbing black color. She is horned, but carries polled genetics from her sire. To top it off, “Smidge” has a wonderful, easygoing disposition and impressive, balanced EPDs. Although I like black Brahmans and dark pigment, I’ve always stressed choosing quality over color. I waited decades for black V8’s, and this heifer is V8 quality. Selfishly, we’d very much like to keep her all to ourselves. However, when we see the results of our planning and dreaming being utilized by our colleagues, the sense of pride and accomplishment we feel for the breed far outweighs our desire to hoard our best genetics. We look forward to partnering with you on what we believe is “the next big thing.” Let’s make some new magic together.

A DREAM THAT HAS BEEN 50 YEARS IN THE MAKING. For a long time, I've thought about building a herd of black Brahmans. Not that we're going to change anything in our current herd, but at 67 years old, sometimes you like a challenge, and that's what I'm going to do. As we've always done at V8 Ranch, the number one selection criteria will be quality — just like we're doing with our new polled line of cattle. We are keeping a part of Miss V8 554/9 because we feel like she is going to be a good foundation and building block for this herd. Fifty years ago was the first time I saw Miss V8 914/1. I didn’t just see her; I also realized the potential for black cattle to become popular. After all those years of having this idea in the back of my mind, the cattle are finally here. There's going to be a lot of upside potential with these black cattle. I haven’t been this enthusiastic about a black Brahman in decades.

It seems we can’t ever produce enough of these good V8 red-tinged females. Over the past several years, our red-tinged heifers have been the first to be chosen from our private treaty sale pens, and the demand for this color is only growing, especially in Asian countries.

V8 146/8 During this time, Mr. V8 736/5 sired the National Champion, Miss V8 100/7 (P), who is the +Miss V8 805/6 dam of +Mr. V8 458/7 “Noble.” Another V8-raised female from the +Miss V8 4/5 cow family, (+)JDH Karu Manso 800 Miss V8 775/7, is the dam of the 2021 International Champion Female. Miss V8 639/6, the MISS V8 639/6 dam of Lot 6, passed away last year, making these genetics rare. In her lifetime, she produced +Miss V8 14/6 outstanding show and sale cattle, most recently the popular Miss Red V8 284/9, a full sister to this heifer, owned by Razorback Farms. Miss V8 567/9 is long bodied, balanced, upheaded, and very sound and elegant in her movement. To put it simply, she’s what we’re always hoping to offer to the Brahman breed. Her EPDs put her in the top 15% of the breed for ten different traits (more than any other heifer in this offering). With all these boxes checked, there are plenty of exciting ways to breed, promote, and market a female like Miss V8 567/9.
