It is a pleasure to be here once again at one of our most iconic events at this extremely exciting time for the sport. The Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 is revving up to be bigger and better than ever before with the Palaszczuk Government and council committed to delivering another world-class event here on one of the most iconic circuits anywhere in the world. In 2023 as well as our heart pumping Repco Supercars Championship races that will see the Championship go on the line between some of the sport’s biggest names, we will be bringing you three nights of performances on the Club 500 stage. World class acts The Presets, Client Liaison and Illy are joined by Havana Brown, Mashd N Kutcher, John Course and DJ Total Eclipse to bring you performances like no other. I would like to thank you, our fans, who have travelled from right around Australia and beyond to be a part of this great event once again in 2023. Last year we saw more than 200,000 fans walk through the gates over the three days and we are hoping to do

similar once again this weekend. I can guarantee you there aren’t too many trophies in the world of motorsport that are as coveted as the famous surfboards you will see our drivers lift aloft the podium this weekend. Supercars has one aim: to entertain our loyal fans with the most insanely competitive, doorhandle-to-doorhandle racing on the planet, where the best of the best are separated by just hundredths of a second, and to ensure every experience off track is as good as the last. The Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 has been an iconic event for the region, and the largest annual sporting event held here in Queensland, thanks to the great support we receive from Tourism and Events Queensland and Gold Coast City Council. THE Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 is back and, after another amazing Repco Bathurst 1000, there’s no better way to keep the good times rolling than a street race around Surfers Paradise. The street track is a famous circuit which has produced many great memories across the years. From the old IndyCar races that brought the world’s attention to the Coast, or when the Supercars took over as the main show in town, this event has always been a spectacle – regardless of what cars have been the headlining act. This year’s Gold Coast Supercars race comes at a crucial time in the championship chase, with a major fight brewing between the two big teams of 2023 – Erebus and Triple Eight. Who wins? Who knows! It’s Supercar time on the Gold Coast and I know from speaking with the drivers it will be showtime as they battle at speeds approaching 300km/h around the challenging 3km circuit. The Gold Coast is proud to welcome teams, sponsors, officials and around 200,000 race-hungry fans to our city. Organisers have again created a three-day festival calendar that appeals to families as well as diehard V8 enthusiasts. The success of this event lies in its appeal to families with free entry concessions for some age groups and a specially designed Kids’ Zone adjacent Raceway Alley on Macintosh Island. On-site activities include race day

experiences, merchandise stalls and the chance to meet the V8 stars up close. Our city enjoys a rich history in motorsport with this year being the 27th year we’ve hosted Supercars off the back of Indycars first racing in 1991. We are a proud home to some of the biggest race teams and we have a proven track record (excuse the pun) for delivering world-class events from Coolangatta to Coomera. A TALE OF TWO Two rounds, four races and 600 points left on the table. CONNOR O’BRIEN previews the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 as the title rivals square off …

he way the title contenders for the Repco Supercars Championship have been whittled down. Left standing is an out-and-out two-horse race. It’s the king of Gen3, Brodie Kostecki, versus arguably the new regulations’ biggest critic, Shane van Gisbergen. To say van Gisbergen is not a fan of the Gen3 cars would be an understatement. He’s had a bumpy year but somehow remains well and truly in the hunt for a fourth Supercars crown before departing at season’s end to chase the NASCAR dream. Helped by friend, compatriot and co-driver Richie Stanaway, van Gisbergen accrued more points across the Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000 enduro swing than any other driver to close to within 131 points of Kostecki. As it stands, only seven drivers have fourplus ATCC/Supercars Championships to their name. This is SVG’s chance to become the eighth. With 150 points up for grabs in each of the

remaining four races, all at concrete canyons, it will take just one slip up for Kostecki to suddenly become vulnerable. But the Coca-Cola Racing by Erebus star is not in the position he is by mistake. Kostecki has barely put a foot wrong all year – in fact, his last non-top 10 result was down to a mechanical failure which he heroically defied to finish 19th in Race 1 at Townsville. And as well as co-driver David Russell has served him, Gold Coast’s post-COVID status as a solo driver event means Kostecki is fully in control of his own destiny from here on in. Having each fallen out of contention, what role will Kostecki and van Gisbergen’s teammates now play? Every point might matter, so the opportunity for Erebus and Triple Eight to now deploy Will Brown and Broc Feeney, respectively, as chess pieces is real – although the teams’ title battle could deter any full sacrificial lamb ploys. Beyond the championship fight, the everobvious storyline is parity. The race at Bathurst was the final trigger to

Ford teams endured a tough weekend at the Repco Bathurst 1000. Chaz Mostert, above leading Thomas Randle at Bathurst, remains the highestplaced Ford in the pointscore. Cam Waters, below, will be aiming to bounce back from failing to finish at Mount Panorama.

“FOR THE 2023 EDITION OF THE GOLD COAST 500, THERE WILL BE A COUPLE OF NEW FACTORS TO WATCH OUT FOR” force a second in-season parity review and at the time of writing, it’s widely expected that Ford’s aero upgrades will finally be approved. How much of a difference that makes on the tight and twisty streets of the Gold Coast is debatable, but there is only one way to find out. It should be noted, however, that both of Ford’s wins this year have come on street circuits (one in Newcastle and the other in Townsville) so there’s genuine cause for optimism if you’re a Blue Oval fan. For the 2023 edition of the Gold Coast 500, there will be a couple of new factors to watch out for, too. One is the removal of the tyre bundles at the multiple apexes along the beach chicane. That move follows a massive pile-up last year and serves to protect the front bars of the Gen3 cars, while an upgraded system will give drivers instant feedback via the dash as to whether or not they have recorded a kerb strike. Also new will be a pair of full-field postpractice tests on Friday for a much-needed formal Safety Car slowdown procedure. Those sessions will be key towards a safer future for the sport in 2024.

Worth noting too is the end is in sight for several combinations. In fact, it’s the penultimate round for: Brown/Erebus, SVG/Triple Eight, Nick Percat/ WAU, James Courtney and Declan Fraser/ Tickford, Scott Pye/Team 18, David Reynolds/ Grove, Jack Le Brocq/MSR, and maybe more. Those ending dynamics are sure to be fascinating to watch in their own ways, with some divorces being amicable and others less so. All in all, Gen3 at the Gold Coast for the first time should be spectacular, as the Mustangs and Camaros climb kerbs at high speed and get pushed to the limits that are the city’s concrete walls.

THIS year has marked a major change for Nick Percat, his first season in the Repco Supercars Championship at the wheel of a Ford after 288 championship race starts exclusively driving Holden Commodores. This season is his second with Walkinshaw Andretti United however it’s simply not gone to plan and the 2011 Bathurst 1000 winner now finds himself moving on for 2024. Percat has two rounds left with WAU before he departs to join Matt Stone Racing for next year. The highlight of last year was undoubtedly his second-place finish as part of a WAU 1-2 in

Percat made his Supercars Championship debut at the 2010 Phillip Island 500 co-driving a Walkinshaw Racing Commodore and this year marks his 10th season as a full-time driver in the championship. This year marks Heimgartner’s eighth fulltime season in the championship and comes after a stellar 2022 with BJR. He finished 10th in the championship pointscore (the best of his Supercars Championship career) and had four podium finishes, including two on home soil at Pukekohe in New Zealand. MATTHEW Payne continues his rapid rise up the motorsport ladder with his first full-time season in the Repco Supercars Championship in 2023. The young New Zealander only raced a Supercar for the first time in November 2021, and this year is just his third full season racing cars since stepping up from karting. He graduated to circuit racing in New Zealand’s Toyota Racing Series, winning the three-race 2021 title and finishing third in the New Zealand Grand Prix. Payne was also the first recipient of the Team Porsche NZ scholarship under the tutelage of multiple Le Mans 24 Hours winner

He impressed with back-to-back poles at The Bend Motorsport Park and Townsville and put in an assured drive to victory at the latter round, finishing sixth in the standings overall. Payne’s form saw him recruited as the foundation driver of the Grove Junior Team in mid-2021, with the goal of graduating to the Repco Supercars Championship with the squad in 2023. The extra season behind the wheel of a second-tier machine paid dividends with Payne sharpening his skills. He led the points early in the season and eventually finished third in the series and won the Mike Kable Young Gun Award for his efforts as best first year driver in Supercars racing. To cap his graduation, Payne finally made his ‘main game’ debut at last year’s Repco Bathurst 1000, impressing alongside veteran Lee Holdsworth in finishing sixth in one of the Grove’s team Penrite Mustangs. Payne currently sits 16th in the championship points entering the Gold Coast.

SCOTT Pye is coming to the end of his fouryear spell racing with Team 18 as he’ll depart the team in the off-season and take up an endurance co-drive with Red Bull Ampol Racing for 2024. A year later Mostert was mounting a serious title challenge when a horror qualifying crash at Bathurst left him with a broken leg and wrist, sidelining him for the rest of the year. He returned for the start of 2016 and proved a regular front-runner for the Ford team over the next four seasons before moving to WAU in 2020. Winless so far this year, Mostert is the topplaced Ford driver in 2023, fifth in the points.

THE rise of Grove Racing in 2022 allowed David Reynolds to remind the Repco Supercars Championship of his reputation as one of its most formidable racers. Reynolds’ career to date is packed with success, winning the Australian Formula Ford and Carrera Cup titles en route to Supercars. THE 2023 season marks James Golding’s first full-time Repco Supercars Championship campaign since 2019, completing a three-year fight to regain a seat in the ‘main game’. A Formula Ford open wheeler racing graduate, he finished third in the 2014 national series and made his Dunlop Series debut at the end of that year in a Commodore after catching the eye of team owner Garry Rogers. He moved into karts aged nine and then cars at 15, becoming the youngest race winner in Toyota 86 Racing Series history before making the leap to Super3 and winning the series for ex-Supercars in 2019. He graduated to the Dunlop Super2 Series with Tickford Racing in 2020 and finished seventh overall in the COVID-impacted season before a switch to Triple Eight for 2021. THIS TIME LAST YEAR A title clinched, a massive shunt and controversy over kerbs. WILL DALE covers off all of the major items from the 2022 round at Surfers Paradise.

BACK ON THE STREETS The Repco Supercars Championship made its return to the Surfers Paradise streets in 2022 following a multi-year absence amid the COVID-19 pandemic. There were a few changes during the gap between events, most notably the format. The Gold Coast round had served as the third leg of the Enduro Cup since its creation for 2013 and had been a two-driver event since 2010, but became a single-driver round for the first time since 2009. The race duration changed accordingly, with the former ‘Gold Coast 600’ becoming a pair of twin-250km races to mirror the championship’s other ‘500’ street events.

BJR GETS THE GUN Wet weather at Mount Panorama forced a delay in the grand finale of last year’s PIRTEK Pit Stop Challenge, which instead took place at the Gold Coast event for the first time. Crews from Walkinshaw Andretti United and Dick Johnson Racing entered the semi-finals as the top-seeded teams, but both were knocked out by Triple Eight and Brad Jones Racing respectively. The Albury-based team blitzed the final, registering a 6.26-second stop to Triple Eight’s 6.84s to secure the Golden Rattle Gun Trophy for the fourth consecutive year, along with the $20,000 grand prize.

2022 FLASHBACK

CHICANE CONTROVERSY Many of the drivers were wide-eyed after their first flying laps on the Gold Coast streets since 2019, the tight confines of the concrete walls combined with the high-speed ride over the kerbs at the chicanes proving a shock to the system. “The first lap out I was like, ‘woah, where has this been?!’” said Mark Winterbottom. But the awe soon gave way to frustration over the track’s kerb sensor system, with drivers signing a petition to turn them off altogether after perceived inconsistencies during Friday practice. They stayed on for the rest of the weekend, but an updated system is in place for 2023.

ROASTED REYNOLDS Saturday was a golden day for Grove Racing, with David Reynolds claiming pole position in the Top 10 Shootout and converting it to a second-place finish in the race. However, it wasn’t without incident. Firstly, he battled a loose steering wheel during the opening stint, a problem that the team was able to rectify during a pit stop. The second was a problem with the cool suit system, which left Reynolds well and truly overheated by the time he took the chequered flag. “That was the hottest I have ever felt,” he said afterwards. “It’s not fun out there at all … it’s the absolute worst feeling in the world.”

GAME, SET, MATCH SVG Shane van Gisbergen put the 2022 title battle beyond doubt with a dominant victory in the Saturday race, passing pole man Reynolds on lap 15 and checking out to an eventual 16-second win. The victory was his 20th of the season. The Kiwi’s closest championship rival, Tickford Racing’s Cam Waters, was battling for third place in the closing stages when he spun exiting the first chicane. He resumed down in seventh place, but fell to 606 points behind van Gisbergen with a maximum haul of 450 remaining across the final three races of the season.

DAVISON’S DILEMMA Will Davison arrived at the first corner of the Sunday race fractionally ahead of pole man van Gisbergen but exited it several car lengths ahead, having shortcut the chicane entirely. A bump in the rear from Chaz Mostert unsettled the car just as he was about to turn into the corner, prompting the Dick Johnson Racing pilot to make a snap-decision. “(I was) heading towards a huge sausage kerb which breaks your car,” he explained. “So I just steered right and just thought I’d wait and see what was said (by the stewards).” Word soon came that Davison was cleared of any wrongdoing, which lit a fire under the man he’d passed…

SAVAGE SUNDAY SHUNT The beach chicane brought James Golding unstuck in the early stages of the Sunday race, triggering a multi-car pileup that forced the race to be halted. The PremiAir Racing driver was running in 10th place on lap 4 when he got sideways over the kerbs and ploughed into the tyre bundle that denoted the chicane’s final apex, firing the #31 car towards the wall on the right-hand side. The following cars had little option but to plough into Golding’s stricken car. All up, 11 cars sustained damage – including Thomas Randle, who was travelling right behind Golding and had the tyre bundle pushed directly into his path – and six failed to make the restart.

SVG’S SIX-PACK Van Gisbergen, fuming over the lack of penalty over Davison’s first corner short-cut, charged after the #17 Ford on the restart and took the lead on lap 11, before racing away to his 21st and final victory of the 2022 season. The clean sweep of the Surfers Paradise races marked the sixth-straight round in which SVG had been the top point scorer, a feat that hadn’t been achieved since Jim Richards topped six rounds in a row on his way to winning the 1985 Australian Touring Car Championship. The only driver to come close in the intervening years was Mark Skaife, who topped five in a row in 2002.

WO ROUNDS remain in the fight for the Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia Championship and the ledger is pretty much square in the fight to be Porsche King this year. Kiwi sensation Callum Hedge and swift Sydneysider Jackson Walls are split by just six points as the field returns to the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 this weekend with the gloves likely to be well and truly off in a title battle expected to go down to the wire. Walls had a challenging middle season stretch this year, however regained almost all the ground he lost with a strong weekend at Bathurst while Hedge missed the round, instead off chasing open wheel success in the United States. What was almost a full round’s worth of points disadvantage was reduced to just

six points heading to Surfers Paradise this weekend meaning the title race is very much well and truly alive. The spoiler in the mix is likely to be Harri Jones, the defending champion back for a second bout this year at the circuit on which he made his Carrera Cup debut in 2019. Behind Hedge and Walls, the fight is well on for third; Dale Wood, Max Vidau and Dylan O’Keeffe all split by just 37 points. Behind them, less than 100 separate Simon Fallon, Bayley Hall, Fabian Coulthard, Thomas Maxwell, David Russell, David Wall and Alex Davison in the fight for the final spots in the top 10. The Carrera Cup Championship is in a purple patch of competition with six winners from the last six rounds. A seventh – not outside the realms of possibility given the

unpredictability of the field this year – would equal an all-time Carrera Cup record. The Pro-Am fight is similarly intense: Sam Shahin’s lead having been whittled down to just 28 points by a resurgent Adrian Flack, with Dean Cook only 44 from the series’ lead in third. Recent ring-in Liam Talbot, who will continue to deputise aboard the car usually raced by Luke King, is likely to be the spoiler in the Pro-Am pack this weekend. Carrera Cup will tackle three races this at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 and if you expect the driver who qualifies on pole to win, it’s perhaps prudent to look back at 2022 as a form guide for this year. There, West Aussie Aaron Love qualified only 15th but after just 24 laps of racing found himself leading - proving that you can, in fact, pass on the streets of Surfers Paradise.

HE V8 SuperUte Series has been one of the true success stories of Australian motorsport in 2023 with solid field numbers and great racing quickly becoming the norm for the V8-powered class this season. The final round for this season on the Gold Coast should be no exception with 21 SuperUtes (the biggest field since the Sydney Motorsport Park round in July) set to battle it out around the concrete-lined Surfers Paradise street track. There’s a solid field of dual-cabs entered for this round, the last in the series’ sixstop nationwide tour this year as part of the support bill for the Repco Supercars Championship. An expanded fleet of racers represent Ford, General Motors, Isuzu, Mazda, Mitsubishi and Toyota in the series, which kicked off back in April at the Perth SuperSprint at Wanneroo Raceway. Unlike the early years of the category where

the field ran with turbo diesel engines, all V8 SuperUtes thesedays are equipped with a control 6.2-litre LS3 V8 engine, a powerplant that came into play in the category back in 2021. The racing has been tight this year with plenty of familiar faces and names mixing it up at the front of the field, including reigning series champion Aaron Borg. Borg won the last round at Bathurst to leapfrog back into the series lead, an impressive effort given he missed the round at The Bend Motorsport Park in August due to international commitments. He enters the Gold Coast series decider just seven points in front of Adam Marjoram with third-placed Ryal Harris just 26 points off the lead in third place. Harris is a two-time V8 SuperUte Series winner in 2018 and 2021 and sits 41 points clear of fourth-placed David Sieders. John Stephensen makes his return to the

series on the Gold Coast at the wheel of a HiLux that has been rebuilt since it was involved in a multi-car crash at The Bend, while former V8 Utes racer Matt Nolan takes over the HiLux that Harry Gray ran earlier in the year. Production car racer Amar Sharma will make his V8 SuperUte debut in the final round of the series, having purchased the Mazda BT50 formerly campaigned by Richard Mork. The V8 SuperUtes will be in action on the Gold Coast for four races across the event, with two on Saturday and two held on Sunday. The Gold Coast event may mark the last round of the V8 SuperUte Series this year, however it won’t be the last time the teams will be on track. It was recently confirmed the category will compete in a non-championship event as a support to the VAILO Adelaide 500 on the last weekend of November.

HE battle for the Precision National Sports Sedan Series is going to go down to the final round at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 and history is calling Western Australian Tony Ricciardello in his quest for yet another national-level crown. The V8-powered Alfetta driver knows all about winning national level championships and series in the class and could clinch yet another one on the concrete-lined jungle that is the Surfers Paradise street circuit. Ricciardello won the Australian Sports Sedan Championship four times (1998, 1999, 2001, 2002) and has won the National Sports Sedan Series seven times (2005, 2007, 2011, 2014-2016, 2019) since it was first established.

And he’s in the box seat to do it too, given he won the last round at the Repco Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama and sits 59 points clear of Jordan Caruso’s Audi heading into the Gold Coast round, with Ashley Jarvis’ Monaro just one point behind Caruso in third place. There’s still 135 points on offer at the Gold Coast round with 30 points for the win in Race 1, 45 points for the win in Race 2 and 60 points for the driver that comes out on top in Race 3 of the weekend. The field for Sports Sedans has a great mixture for the Gold Coast street circuit and it’s set to be full of cars of various make, models, eras and powerplants. From thumping V8-powered spaceframes

to rotaries and turbos, the category provides the opportunity for endless possibilities of vehicles to compete in the same race. This round marks the return of nationallevel Sports Sedan racing to the Gold Coast event for the first time since 1997, when honours were shared in the pair of races that weekend between South Australian Mick Monterosso’s V8-powered Escort and Tasmania Kerry Baily’s Toyota Supra. This round is the last of five rounds in this year’s Precision National Sports Sedan Series. Two practice sessions and qualifying will be held on Friday, two races will be held on Saturday and a final race late on Sunday morning.
