Brainstorm words, phrases and collect objects/images based on the theme of surfaces. Record all your ideas and thoughts on a series of A3 layout paper sheets.

Develop a brief based upon possible graphic responses to the theme. Create thumbnails to explain your ideas.

Collect items, objects, materials relevant to your chosen brief (packaging, logos, illustrations etc).

Take photographs relevant to your design brief.

Document the design process, through both written and visual means and present in your portfolio.

AO2 ANALYSE & evaluate images, objects and artefacts, making informed connections with the work of others

Focus your initial web based research at sites like Typography Served and the Behance Network. This initial phase will direct you towards the designer/design team website.

Investigate the processes designers use to create their work.

Contact the designers who interest you the most for more information. Remember be polite, explain who you are and what you are doing. Ask relevant, pertinent questions. The worst that can happen is they ignore your email!

Reference the images and information you have gathered from books, journals, magazines and websites. Use Easybib or Zotero to help you correctly cite your sources.

Produce three pages of research printed on A3 sheets. Present in your portfolio.

AO3 DEVELOP and explore ideas, using a variety of media and processes that are appropriate to intentions

Based upon your research, select the style which interests you the most.

Think about what you can do with the technique/style.

Experiment with some of the techniques you have discovered using your own ideas.

Develop your own ideas from initial thumbnails to final developments and roughs.

Document the processes involved in the experimentation. Explain difficulties encountered and decisions made to overcome these problems on three A3 pages.

Produce final roughs of your ideas and final digital resolutions. Review and make any necessary changes before the final work begins.

AO4 REVIEW and refine ideas, modifying work as it progresses, before presenting a coherent personal response

Create your final design.

Photograph your final completed work if its in a 3D form.

Produce a digital file for final printing.

Print both digital and photographic prints, mount and present in your portfolio and as separate pieces of work.

Produce a final evaluation. Reflect on the positives and negatives of the project.
