A Sensible Approach to Seafood By Leslie Clements The Virginia Aquarium’s Sensible Seafood Program loves striped bass. Known locally as rockfish, this local hero plays an essential role in the marine ecosystem and both commercial and recreational fisheries. In the 1980s, the striped bass almost disappeared because the demand for the fish was so high, but the stock rebounded fully by the mid-1990s. Striped bass made a comeback because our country has improved how we manage fisheries by using science to look at the survival of the species and the overall health of the ocean. You also make a difference in protecting this fish population by purchasing sustainable seafood. Currently, striped bass numbers are low, but with science-based fisheries management and your Sensible Seafood choices, the striped bass population can recover again. This year, the Sensible Seafood Program teamed up with The Ocean Project to tell the story of the striped bass to Aquarium guests. Members of the Program team encouraged guests to sign cards to our lawmakers. The cards showed our support for science-based fisheries management in anticipation of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act reauthorization next year. The Sensible Seafood Team also promotes oceanfriendly seafood with a Virginia-specific seafood guide, which points consumers to sustainable, local seafood. Buying Virginia seafood ensures fresh seafood and supports over 11,000 jobs for those who work in the seafood industry. Pick up a guide on your next visit to the Aquarium or download it online at VirginiaAquarium.com. Together we can make a difference to our oceans!

Mermaids
Around the World By Tanya Will
For centuries, mysteries of the water were explained with legends of magical beings, part-human, part-marine animal, passed down through generations. Some legends attempted to give meaning to tragedy, and others gave hope in times of distress. And, some appear simply to feed fanciful imaginations. Yet it is intriguing that mermaid-like tales can be found in cultures spanning the globe. While the earliest known tales are of the Assyrian goddess Atargatis, our modern depictions in the west of a strong-willed, vocally-gifted, blue-eyed red-head created in the minds of Disney® artists are anchored in Hans Christian Anderson’s timeless tale of "The Little Mermaid." Anderson himself was likely inspired by the Melusine of Celtic and French legends, now seen on almost every Starbucks™ beverage cup. Melusine are known for their beauty, innocent nature, and gentle relationship with humans. Similar comforting stories of an aquatic human originated in Africa of Mami Wata. She is said to be a caring mother-figure watching over humans from a nearby river’s edge and ready to intercede when needed. These tales later traversed the Atlantic on slave ships and continue to be a source of hope at Caribbean bedsides.
SPRING 2020 | VIRGINIA AQUARIUM QUARTERLY
7
Many cultures, however, tell many different stories of evil mermaid-like beings. The male merrow of Irish legends is said to be hideous and violently vicious, often attacking humans. In Brazil, there are horror stories told of Iara, who sits on the river’s edge using her melodic voice to lure Amazon River boatmen to her palace under the water. Some mer-like folklore characters are shape-shifters like the Scottish selkies. These creatures appear as seals while in the water but are able the shed their seal-skin mantles when they want to walk among humans. In Japan, there are stories of both the ningyo (“human fish”) and the kappa (part turtle). Legends say that anyone who eats a ningyo will receive great fortune but that catching one will also bring on horrible disasters. It is believed that the kappa, which looks kind of like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, will warn children to stay away from the water and its dangers. You can find signs near Japanese water’s edges even today depicting a kappa and warning children that he will grab you and tickle you until you drown if you venture too near. Also, warning children to stay away from the water, Russian children are familiar with stories of the lovely, but menacing and forlorn rusalka. They are believed to be women who died tragically and in death seek humans to join them in their underwater gloom.

Join us for Mermaid Mondays! April 6, 13, 20 & 27 | 6 - 8:30PM
In one culture, the need for imagined stories to explain the mysterious appears to be dying out even though artifacts belying their past influence remain. Stories of the marakihau, once told among the Māori of the Pacific islands, are hard to find, yet evidence remains in the intricate wood carvings found in New Zealand.
all active imaginations to come visit with a mermaid at the Ray Touch Pool or watch them swim gracefully in the Red Sea Aquarium. You will also be able to see mermaids throughout the Main Building, and enjoy exclusive mermaid puppet shows and live musical performances at these exclusive after-hours events.
Within the tapestry of cultures around the world is woven a common thread of the human mind, and right here on the shores of the Atlantic, we see the long-lasting impact these stories have had. From King Neptune guarding the coastline of Virginia Beach to the artistic mermaids dotting Hampton Roads, and our very own enchanting visitors here at the Aquarium, mermaids and legends of the sea will sail with us for generations to come, sparking our imaginations, not unlike the once-upon-a-time tales that tell of a “land far, far away.”
For those wanting to learn even more about mermaids, we invite our guests to participate in one of the Mermaid Behind the Scenes tours. All the young budding mermaids can experience a unique salon treatment fit for the sea at Mermaid Balee’s Bubblee Boutique. Here, children ages 4 to 10 will be immersed in the world of mermaids enjoying snacks that would entice any mermaid, and a chance to participate in all kinds of mer-activities. As a special bonus, each participant of Mermaids Behind the Scenes or Mermaid Balee's Bubblee Boutique will also receive a gift certificate donated by the Mermaid Factory! This certificate will entitle the bearer to a free mermaid or dolphin, including studio time, at the Mermaid Factory in either their Norfolk or Virginia Beach location.

The New Chesapeake Bay Exhibit Gallery Animals By Julie Levans
The Chesapeake Bay is a diverse ecosystem that provides an excellent nursery and is home to more than 2,700 different species of plants and animals. To highlight this great biodiversity, we opened four new habitats featuring some of the smaller plants and animals that are found in our “backyard.
Balance of Nature Every ecosystem needs a balance. Snakes such as timber rattlesnakes and rat snakes help to contribute to the balance by helping keep populations of small rodents under control. Check out our snake in this new exhibit located next to the hellbenders.

Life Above & Below the Mud Be sure to check out the fiddler crabs who can be seen waving their big claws to attract mates. This habitat is incredibly natural all the way down to the authentic smell of pluff mud that came from Owl Creek. The tide fluctuates throughout the day to create a natural environment for the crabs, snails, mussels, grasses, and anything else that may be living in the richly organic substrate.
Fiddler Crabs
Life Among the Grasses Seahorses and pipefish can found among the grasses of the Chesapeake Bay and are cousins in the syngnathid family of fishes. A quick reflex creates a suction in which these fishes suck up their prey consisting of small shrimps and plankton. Listen closely, and you can hear the click of the snick when they are eating. Did you know that these animals essentially do not have a stomach and therefore require eating throughout the day because of their quick digestive system?
Pipefish
The More the Merrier All life stages are essential in the vibrant ecosystem of the Chesapeake Bay. You will see a variety of different species on exhibit throughout the year in this habitat. Different seasons bring different temperatures, critters, and life stages to our waters, creating a healthy environment for all.

The Spotted Eagle Ray By Julie Levans
Spotted eagle rays can have a wingspan of up to 10 feet!
Listed as "Near Threatened" by the IUCN Red List, spotted eagle rays can be found throughout much of the world's temperate and tropical coasts and reefs even though their numbers are steadily decreasing. Named for their brilliant black and white spotted pattern, these beauties can soar through the ocean with wingspans of up to 10 feet in length. Often observed "flying" out of the water to evade boats or predators, these rays usually travel in small groups that travel long distances in search of food. Spotted eagle rays use their duckbill-like rostrums to sift through the sand in search of bivalves, shrimp, crabs, and even octopus. These rays have spines or barbs located near the base of their very long tail. They use these spines as a last chance effort to flee from major predators such as tiger sharks, lemon sharks, and hammerheads.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Spotlight on Doreen Cote By Shawn Reid Our very own Doreen "Dorie" Cote keeps swimming her way into everyone's heart with her infectious laugh, kind disposition, and always helpful manner. Doreen was born in Groton, CT and has lived in Virginia Beach since 1991. She has been married to her husband, Jim, for 29 years. Doreen is very close with their beautiful daughter, Tracy, who is 25 and getting married in August 2020! Doreen retired in 2010 after working 36 years as a civil servant with the Department of Defense. After the loss of her parents and her daughter going off to college, Doreen decided to volunteer at the aquarium on the advice of some friends who volunteered here. Doreen started as a Gallery Docent and is currently juggling Onsite Education, Sensible Seafood, Scout Programs, Special Projects/Events, and New Volunteer Orientations. Most of her volunteer hours come from the Aquarium's Dolphin, Whale & Wildlife boat programs. As if all her volunteer service is not enough, Doreen has also held various positions on the Volunteer League Board and is currently serving as their president. Besides volunteering at the Virginia Aquarium, Doreen has many other interests. Doreen is an avid reader. She also loves to travel to new and exciting places to experience different cultures and photograph all the natural beauty of the world. She hates to be late, and lives by the motto, "Don't ask anyone to do something that you wouldn't do yourself!" Doreen's favorite Aquarium exhibit is the sea turtles, as she finds them very beautiful and peaceful. Doreen believes that volunteering is rewarding and exciting. She truly believes that you get more out of volunteering personally then what she puts in and feels that it is heartwarming to make a memorable experience for a guest, something we should all strive to do.
