the project When I graduated high school there were about three things I wanted to become. First of all: a Graphic-/Web Designer, second of all: a music video director, and third: a Layouter for a magazine. Well, the third is pretty much the same as the first, but there’s something special with magazine layouts and somehow InDesign became one of my favorite programs to work in. Now, this is mostly a first draft where I play around with the idea and development making myself a template, this is not even close to the real deal of turning my blog into a monthly summarized magazine. I’m not a pro, and I’m not saying I can do this better than the thousands of magazines out there (though I would like to). This is just a dream of mine, and in lack of other occupations I’d like to experiment, learn and get better. This magazine will change, and probably someday be an example in my portfolio that gets me my dream job. My inspiration comes mostly from Nylon magazine, because in my opinion it’s one of few fashion magazines
that gets graphic designers wet dreams. It’s just the perfect magazine you could ever possibly read based on the graphics. I also get some inspiration from Urban Outfitters newsletters. Odd, I know! But if you’re a design nerd you see the layouts, colors and fonts, not the text that says, “Sale!” I’ve also become familiar to the grid-system and how to use it. But It will probably take years until I master the skill of using it. I’m hoping that in time this project of mine will be just as enjoyable reading as Nylon magazine, without being a copycat. I will truly try to make this my own and in the process maybe find myself in it. ■

CRUSH & BLUSH All three are loved by consumers and have very high ratings. photographed by isabel salo
These are the three blushes I vary between. I use a Laura Mercier Cheek Colour Brush in travel size that works well with all of them.
Start off with Smashbox:
I was going to buy it in the colour Flush that’s more of a rose-colour than peach, but somehow I played it safe and got Chiffon instead, which flatters most complexions and is said to resemble Nars Orgasm. At first look the shimmer may put you off, and if you’re going for just-colour-look you may go elsewhere. I for another hand like the shimmer, it works a little bit like a highlighter and I don’t think it’s too much. The blush is buildable and very sheer. The lasting of it on the cheeks is questionable though, if you rubb your face a lot there’s a big chance anything will wear off eventually. So touch-ups can be required. Otherwise the powder per se is very long lasting, I use the Smashbox almost everyday, and I think this spring it turns 2-3 years. The packaging I love, it’s compact with a little swivel mirror, fits great anywhere. And I’ve dropped it a few times and to my surprise the powder didn’t break (or maybe I’m just lucky). I’ll definitely buy it again, and probably in another colour.

Clinique:
This is actually my mom’s that I stole from her ‘cause she doesn’t use it and I think it’s too good to not use it. It’s the most expensive of the bunch, probably because you get a brush with it. Now, I’m usually very skeptic to follow-along-brushes, and even if I got my LM brush with this one it actually works best to just use the brush that the blush provides you with. The colour looks similar to Smashbox’s Chiffon, but this one has less shimmer in it and it’s more pink than peach. This one also goes well with all skin colours and gives you a fresh I’ve-just-come-homefrom-running-a-mile kind of blush. It’s buildable and long lasting. The packaging is maybe a little big, but I like the double mirror, and the easy-to-use brush that comes with. All in all it’s worth the price and I would definitely buy it again, even the same colour!
Nars:
I got this one imported from a friend who lives in the US before I even knew you could buy Nars products at ASOS. Even here, as with Smashbox, I was going for two shades different from each other, I really wanted Deep Throat (peach with shimmer - also, naughty name!) but somehow I ended up with Torrid (coral with shimmer) when it was too late to change my mind. Torrid is supposed to be a darker shade of orgasm; I read that it’s a great shade in the summer matching up with your suntanned skin. Well, to be honest I don’t use it frequently, only in the summer, if I use it in the winter I look like a clown. It’s extremely pigmented, not sheer like the other ones. Everyone seems to love Nars blush which makes me feel a little uncomfortable complaining about it. My biggest issue with it is that the powder kind of gets very hard and compact leaving hardly anything on the brush. I usually take some paper and rub the surface until the powder gets loose, but then I get too much on my brush. Not ideal. Clinique has the same problem, but not this severe. Or maybe I just don’t use it enough? Packaging is ok, nothing to complain about. Even though my problem I will probably buy it again, but next time in a different shade. I’m thinking of Deep Throat or Sex Appeal. ■

Tips on how to keep yourself in shape and keep the motivation up: - Have a realistic and healthy role model that you would like to look like. Do not turn to Thinspiration, but choose a celebrity or someone else with a similar body shape to yours that you think looks good and you feel that you can achieve similar results. - Do something you really like and enjoy. For example, I like sports where you move your whole body, such as aerobics and swimming, I also love to jog. But strength training and other monotonous workouts puts me off, but I try to combine it in my usual routine. - Always take the stairs instead of the elevator/escalators. Make it a sport: who finish up first. The truth is that it takes just as long to go up the steps as it takes to ride the
MO TIV ATION escalator - and if you have time, go up the escalator it’s a
really good workout! And try to take the hard road home with steep hills if you can.
photographed by isabel salo.
- Work out in the clothes you think you look good in.
Now maybe I’m too much friends with myself and my body, but one thing I usually do to motivate myself that works really well is to work out in a bikini or suchlike. It makes me think of summer and the beach, which I love. Also, you get a preview of how good you will look.
- X = * your choice *. Maybe not the smartest way to get
fit, but the carrot trick works really well. I do not excercise to lose weight, I feel happy with where I have come. Only, I exercise to feel good, look good and be able to eat those extra carbs my body doesn’t need. But it doesn’t have to be food in general; it can be a garment, a journey, a new furniture. X may be pounds, minutes, centimeters, kilometers, whatever your target is currently. And everyone deserves something good when they’ve reached their goal!
