RANGE POLICIES EYE AND EAR PROTECTION All people on the range property must wear eye and ear protection — no exceptions. If you do not have eye and ear protection of your own, earplugs and safety glasses are available at the registration table. COLD RANGE All firearms on the range are to be unloaded and carried in a holster or case unless in a safety area, or at the specific command of a range officer on the line. There will be a designated area(s) for function firing and firearms handling. SQUAD SCHEDULE The shooting schedule will be adhered to. If a contestant arrives after their designated squad has concluded shooting, they will either fire the stage with the last squad of the day or be put with a later squad. This will be subject to the discretion of the Match Officials. The shooter may NOT reassign themselves to other squads of their choice. PHOTOGRAPHIC RELEASE By entering or attending the Steel Challenge, each participant authorizes unconditional use of his/her likeness, name and match results for purposes of advertising and promotion without compensation, consideration, notice, review or consent. PREPAREDNESS Contestants are to go to the line prepared with the appropriate number of magazines, or speed loaders and needed ammunition, so as to not cause unnecessary delay. A contestant may have an assistant to help them in reloading if needed. ROUND COUNT Competitors may fire as many rounds as they deem necessary for each string of fire. There are a minimum of 195 shots fired for the eight stages. USE OF TENTS AND CANOPIES There will be designated areas for function firing and firearms handling. The shaded holding area (canopy) at each stage is primarily for competitors. Friends and family members are allowed in this area only if not needed by competitors. Please respect the competitor’s efforts by keeping the noise to a minimum. Anyone appearing to disturb a competitor’s concentration will be asked to leave. 15 2018 STEEL CHALLENGE

LOOKING BACK
LOOKING BACK TO 2017
STEEL CHALLENGE WORLD SPEED SHOOT CHAMPIONSHIP BY CAROLE BRYANT, L3600
L
ocated halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, The Hogue Action Pistol Range in San Luis Obispo, California, was once again host to the USPSA World Speed Shooting Championship. May 4th though 6th saw more than 145 competitors from around the world competing with 320 pistols and rifles in the 8 stages of Steel Challenge. During the 2016 World Speed Shooting Championship (WSSC), wildfires inched close to the range as the smell of smoke hung in the hazy air, while the 2017 USPSA WSSC dodged the flooding which drenched its neighbors to the north. While Mother Nature’s plans may be impossible to predict, you can always count on a great match if Art Leach, Troy McManus and Zack Jones are involved. Art returned as Match Director and Troy was back as Range Master, while Zack, newly appointed as Steel Challenge Shooting Association National Program Coordinator, managed stats. Created by Mike Dalton and Mike Fichman over 35 years ago, each of the eight all-steel courses of Steel Challenge offer a different test of shooting skills. From 35-yard shots with movement on Outer Limits to a seven-yard hosefest on 18x24” rectangles
on Smoke & Hope, one won’t leave disappointed. B.J. Norris captured another World Championship, finishing only 0.16 seconds ahead of second place Max Michel, Jr., with K.C. Eusebio placing third. Norris had first place finishes in Open, Limited, Production and Single Stack, but it was his Limited division score that set a new world record. In the history of the Steel Challenge, no score below 80 seconds had ever been recorded

until B.J. laid down an impressive 79.39, less than three seconds off his winning Open division time of 76.63. Jessie Harrison-Duff secured the Ladies World Championship title for the seventh consecutive year, finishing 19 seconds ahead of second place Ashley Rheuark, with Janae Sarabia in third place. In his last major competition as a junior, Kolby Pavlock led the field to win High Junior. Steel Master Award is a special recognition for the competitor with the lowest aggregate score in a combination of three matches, Rimfire Pistol and each of two entries in Center Fire Pistol. The Rifle Master Award is based on the combination of scores from any one Rimfire Rifle division and any one PCC division. Revolver Master, a new category recognized this year, is the combination of scores from Centerfire Optics Revolver, Centerfire Irons Revolver, and one Rimfire Revolver. The results: 2017 Steel Master is B.J. Norris; Rifle Master is Trenton Mitsuoka; Michael Poggie is Revolver Master. In addition to the eight Steel Challenge stages, this year’s match offered three side matches – a

shotgun plate rack speed shoot, a .22 rifle speed shoot and a tomahawk-throwing competition. Mike Foley and B.J. Norris dueled it out with shotguns with Mike edging out B.J. for the win. KC Eusebio won the rifle speed shoot while James Gaston used his tomahawk throwing skills for the win in that event. No match can be successful without a good staff and great volunteers. This was certainly the case at the 2017 USPSA World Speeding Shooting Championship. Besides Art, Troy, Zack, the ROs, score keepers, and the many volunteers, including Janet Leach and Donna Jones, there is one volunteer whose star seems to always shine a little brighter – Michael Brooks. Recognized at the 2017 Optics Nationals in Florida and again at this match for his hard work and willingness to always go that extra mile, Michael Brooks is an asset to every match he works. Thanks to all for their hard work and for another great match. If you want to compete with the fasted steel shooters on the planet, give the World Speed Shooting Championship a try.
