September & VAFA Finals – Where else would you want to be?
Brett Connell - VAFA CEO
Divisional Finals kicked off last weekend and congratulations are in order to Preston Bullants (Division 1), Whitefriars (Division 2), Aquinas (Division 3) and St Francis Xavier OC (Division 4) for winning through to their respective Grand Finals – exciting times.
While we appreciate the “need to know” aspect from clubs regarding finals fi xtures each week, we are also mindful we need to be 100% certain of venue availability before this can be released.
To Preston Bullants, Whitefriars and Aquinas the added bonus of gaining promotion to the higher section goes with the victory, with St Francis Xavier OC flagging with the VAFA an impending move to the Southern Football Netball League in 2020.
Please note that ground availability can become a problem across finals particularly if we have inclement weather – all grounds are subject to availability and hence some venues are not known until early in the week leading into the games.
With crucial Divisional Preliminary Finals this weekend, the heat is on for not only a shot at the 2019 title but also promotion into a higher section in 2020.
We are also looking to include new technology in our 2019 finals series to create effi ciencies for entry into grounds. The new system allows spectators to pre-purchase entry tickets through the Intix app (at a discounted rate) and carry their ticket electronically – you can purchase tickets for multiple venues should you wish to watch multiple finals– each barcode is unique to the purchase too. Clubs and players are also using the e-ticketing system.
All the very best to UHS-VU/Peninsula (Division 1), Brunswick/NOBs (Division 2), Manningham Cobras/ Emmaus St. Leos (Division 3) and Albert Park/Elsternwick (Division 4) – big prizes on the line this weekend. We would also like to thank all of those clubs who have finished up for the year, given our Premier sections closed out their home & away seasons last weekend. To each and every club and their volunteers finished for the season, thank you for your dedicated energy, passion and drive – without you all we would not be in the regarded position we are across community football in Victoria.
So, as we hit the exciting time of the year please remember that no alcohol is to be brought into VAFA finals venues, respect the venues, officials, players and one another and let’s have a cracking finals series.
Speaking of promotion and relegation, in July we met with our Divisional clubs and the strong message from the majority was that we need to get back to (10) team divisions across the board. With this in mind the likely divisions for 2020 could well look like this:

Recent finals rivals renew hostilities Semi-Final 2: University Blues vs Old Xaverians
Semi-Final 1: Collegians vs St Kevin’s OB
For a spot in the big dance. All eyes will be on Elsternwick Park this Saturday as ladder-leaders University Blues will go for their first William Buck Premier Grand Final appearance since 2005 when they clash with Old Xaverians. The Blues have had a grip on top-spot for eight of the 18 rounds this year, claiming an average winning of 57.4 points per game and staking their claim as one of the most dominant sides in the competition this year. After beginning their year like a house on fire with nine wins from their first 10 games by an average margin of 64.2 points, Xavs had many believing 2019 was another year for Paul Satterley and co to add their fourth flag since 2010. Four losses from their final seven games was a less than impressive way to end the year, however, but September football is an entirely different ballgame and the Xavs know that more than anybody. Uni Blues claimed wins in both outings earlier this year, with a 35-point victory in Round 6 and a 63-point drubbing in Round 13 at Toorak Park. Old Xaverians have had the wood on the Blues in the past when it comes to finals however, claiming Premierships in 2005 and 1995 against them, while winning Semi-Final 1 in 2011 and a Preliminary Final in 2016. Despite the Blues having lost their past fi ve finals and the September monkey being well and truly on their back, expect the Blues to right their wrongs and crack the final Saturday in September for 2019.
Even though they won’t be facing on the grandest stage of all like they did in 2017 & 2018, Collegians and St Kevin’s OB will once again square off at Elsternwick Park this Sunday afternoon, vying to keep their season alive. SKOB have their eyes on a potential three-peat in William Buck Premier, an achievement that has only been done 10 times since the VAFA’s inception in 1892, with one being made by their opponents on Sunday in 1957-1959. Collegians will be fighting to keep their aspirations of a third flag since 2011 afloat, as well as returning to the Grand Final stage for the seventh time since 2008. Much like Xavs, St Kevin’s final month of football left a lot to be desired, claiming just one win from their final four matches, but alas still managed to grab 11 victories for the year by an average margin of 48.6 points. Also finishing the year with 11 wins (and one draw), Collegians managed four victories from their final fi ve games, with their memorable Round 18 win over Xavs enough to keep them above the circling Old Brighton. SKOB were the victors in both clashes this year, with a dominant 51-point win in Round 1 and 11-point win in Round 13, extending their winning streak over Collegians to three entering this weekend. Despite SKOB’s form being less than ideal, September football in William Buck Premier has been tinged with the navy blue, green and gold for the last two years, and it would take a brave soul to believe that won’t continue.

PREMIER B PREVIEW Jake Morris
Beauy outduel Bedes for fourth, Fields’ send OGs C-bound opening term, eight in the second, eight in the third and 11 in the last to set a club record for most points scored (223) and largest margin of victory. Fields’ forward Julian Dobosz also captured the goal-kicking award with 48 goals from just 10 games, with the big man set to go against Scotch giant Tom Downie in what is sure to be a mouth-watering contest. Old Geelong will return to C grade for 2020 after just one season in Premier B, looking to bounce back and potentially secure the premiership that eluded them in 2018.
On the back of a Sunny Brazier first-quarter masterclass, Fitzroy have survived the relegation cull to return to Premier B in 2020 after they downed Beaumaris 11 points. Despite sitting in the bottom two for 16 of the 18 rounds this year, the Roys managed back-to-back wins at the end of the season to lift themselves up to 7th and finish their year with a respectable six wins. Brazier’s four-goal first term set the wheels in motion for Fitzroy as they burst out of the gates to an insurmountable 39-point lead at the opening break, a lead they wouldn’t squander as the day continued. Despite the defeat, Beaumaris still managed to cling to fourth spot and will now travel to Box Hill City Oval to face a scorching hot University Blacks in Semi Final 1 on Sunday afternoon.
Joining the OGs in Premier C will be Monash Blues as they failed to get out of the gates against an impressive Old Haileybury to go down by 69 points, ending their four-year stay in Premier B. Despite a slow start which saw them trail at the opening break, the Bloods booted 17 of the next 20 goals to cruise past the Blues and do more than enough to return to the competition next season. Corey Rich bagged six in just his third game for Haileybury while first-gamer Brede Seccull kicked three en route to their largest margin of victory for the year. Premier C will be a challenge for Mark Passador’s young side, but they are certainly classy enough to warrant a return in 2021.
As the Sharks advance into September, it was St Bedes/Mentone Tigers the unlucky ones to come up short, with Old Scotch refusing to allow their fellow 2018 William Buck Premier side feature in finals action with a comfortable 34-point victory. After a Ben Dance major to begin the final term brought the margin back to just four-points, the Cards’ would kick the next fi ve, with a Tom Downie to Conor O’Beirne special from a stoppage in the dying stages the final nail in the coffin for the Tigers year. Scotch finish their home & away season with the best goal-kicking percentage in the competition at just under 55% in front of the big sticks (267/487) and will need all of that as they square off with ladder-leaders Caulfield Grammarians in the second Semi-Final at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday.
Our final clash for the home & away season witnessed Parkdale Vultures almost pull off a remarkable upset as they pushed University Blacks right to the edge but ultimately fell short by 13 points. The Vultures kept the inaccurate Blacks at bay for the opening three quarters, before falling victim to the class of one of the premiere sides of the section in the last, conceding 7.6 to 3.2 to get overrun in a fantastic contest. A Will Fordham major at the 29-minute mark of the final quarter tied the scores, before Daniel McCollough and Joel Ernest each kicked a major in the final six minutes to secure their sides eighth win in a row, setting up a “do or die” clash with Beaumaris on Sunday afternoon at Box Hill City Oval.
Rounding themselves into form that could see them re-enter William Buck Premier for the first time since 2012 was Caulfield Grammarians, as they produced a record-breaking 171-point victory over Old Geelong to secure the minor premiership, increase their average winning margin to 72-points and knock their counterparts into Premier C. PREMIER C PREVIEW Alisha Min
A Rovers return, a Jackas showcase & CYs day out With the top-four set as we welcomed the fi nal home & away round for 2019, it was the question of relegation which lingered amongst Premier C’s following – would it be Hampton Rovers who move back down to Division 1, following their promotion from said section at the end of 2018, or Old Camberwell?
with his good run of form, Thomas Johnstone was named best for Williamstown, while Jackson Green and Sebastian Beale impressed most for Marcellin (7th ). PREVIEW Semi-Final 1: Ajax vs Old Ivanhoe
After a compelling three-point victory in their favour over Old Mentonians, kudos to an upstanding performance by Christian Carnovale (3), as well as teammates and James Prosser and Josh Broadley, Hampton Rovers sealed their fate for another Premier C bout in the new year. With 23 scoring shots to the Panthers 15, the Rovers had ample opportunity to put this game away, a result ultimately made possible via the nine majors evenly contributed by Sam Bradford (3), Carnovale (3) and Campbell Hetherington (3). For the Mentonians, who fi nished in sixth after eyeing off a possible fi nals campaign not two weeks ago, Comrey Edgeworth was deemed best.
It will be Ajax’s fi rst fi nals appearance since 2011 this weekend, and you’d be hard pressed to fi nd a team in the competition with greater resolve than this Jackas line-up. Having won in both clashes during the season, Ajax would appear to have the more compelling argument when discussing their approaching encounter against Old Ivanhoe at Trevor Barker Oval on Sunday afternoon. With a 31-point margin in their favour in Round 2, and an improved 79-point win in Round 15, the Jackas Dov Paltiel and Nick Lewis provided plenty of headaches in the more recent clash, while Trent Weber and Richard Skok were irrefutable in the former. Though the Hoers have demonstrated their superiority over lower ranked sides during the year, beating teams below them on nine out of a possible 12 occasions (factoring in a Round 10 draw against Hampton Rovers), the only fellow fi nals contender they have managed to best is Ormond in Round 13. Nevertheless, Old Ivanhoe’s ability to convert up forward, an ability which puts them second in the section with an average of 83ppg, and their top-end talent – including Michael Mitris, Oscar Mcintyre, Sam Keough, Jack Welham and Michael Del Monte – is as good as anyone’s in Premier C, and a strong showing from them could very well see them progress to the Preliminary Final.
Despite stringing together their fi rst two consecutive wins for the year in Round 16 and Round 17, Old Camberwell fell just short of saving themselves from the Division 1 drop after succumbing to Mazenod by 23 points at Central Reserve. Trailing for the match majority, despite Scott Kaiser (6) and Simon Bennett’s (2) utmost efforts up forward, the class of the Nodders Liam Welsford (3), Jarryd Raffa (3) and Matthew Tighello proved too much for the fi ghting Camberwell to contain. The win sees the Nodders conclude their season in fi fth place, trailing Old Ivanhoe (4th ) by six premiership points, while the Wellers have landed in ninth.
Semi-Final 2: Williamstown CYMS vs Ormond
On a mission to prove they aren’t just making up numbers in the fi nal-four, Old Ivanhoe posted a ten-goal victory over tenth places PEGS in front of the Hoers faithful at Chelsworth Park. Only leading by 11 points at the half, Old Ivanhoe went on to outscore the Division 1 bound Bombers 13.6 to 5.5 in the latter half to put the result beyond doubt. With four goals off his own boot, Michael Mitris subsequently claimed his second BOG accolade for the year, while teammate Jack Welham kicked a game-high six goals. With players like Andrew Frazer and Brett Hannah in their midst, PEGS are sure to rebound in their 2020 campaign in Division 1.
Having only locked heads recently in Round 15, and with the result going convincingly in Williamstown CYMS’ favour following their 104-point win, Ormond will need to have pulled-off some signifi cant legwork in the last month if they harbour any hope of reversing that outcome this weekend – a feat certainly not beyond them. Averaging just over 20 goals each week, compared to the rest of the sections average of 69ppg, while their back-six lets-up 52ppg on average, a fair deal more stringent then the sections typical 77ppg against, the CY’s stats sit head-and-shoulders above the rest; a wholly unsurprising comment considering their unblemished run. With enviable talent in the CY’s ranks, including the reigning 2018 Lou Zachariah Medallist, Yuma Hemphill (who has had another stellar season), while four teammates have tallied 20+ goals for the year, led by Lachlan Fairley with 39 majors, envisaging Williamstown’s downfall is diffi cult. Ethan Hanley, Max Kennedy, Simon Buckley and Dae Szydlik have all had memorable seasons for the Monders so far this year – can they rally the troops and trump the section’s favourites, progress to the Premier C Grand Final and lock in a Premier B promotion for 2020 along the way?
Winning nine of their last 10 matches, you’d be a fool to not take Ajax as a serious contender in this year’s fi nals series – with their 39-point win over second placed Ormond over the weekend sending a real warning to the rest of the silverware focussed clubs as we approach September. A 60-point to 19-point opening quarter made things nigh-on impossible for the Monders from the get-go, despite managing to outscore the Jackas in the remaining three quarters (7.6 vs 6.10). In the Jackas best for the day were Benjamin Krongold and Elliot Debinski, while Ormond’s Ethan Hanley and Dan Szydlik were admirable in defeat. The perfect home & away season greeted Williamstown CYMS on Saturday evening after they accounted for Marcellin by 133 points at Marcellin College. Booting 68 points in the fi rst quarter, comparatively to the Eagles 1.4, an incredible 13 individual goal scorers contributed to the CYs impressive 24-goal total for the day – with Jack Noonan topping the lot with four. Club Retirements As the last remaining round of the home & away season across the competition drew to a close on Saturday afternoon, so too did the coaching and playing careers alike of some memorable personnel within the VAFA community. On a coaching front, the longest serving senior coach in our competition, Nathan Brown (Old Melburnians – William Buck Premier), announced he would be stepping down following his side’s Round 18 match against University Blues, while reigning Premier B premiership coach, Mark “Bomber” Riley (St Bernard’s – William Buck Premier), and fellow 2018 Premier B Grand Final coach, Michael Tarrant (Old Carey – William Buck Premier), also publicised their retirements from their current roles. All with notable success during their tenures, the VAFA congratulates each of these coaches, and all the other coaching staff across the sections, who have dedicated their time, energy, expertise and passion to our association. Amongst our coaching retirements, several playing retirements also surfaced during the week including De La Salle club champion, co-captain and 244 gamer, Jacob Gotch, as well as the impending retirement of Big V representative and SKOB stalwart, Anthony “Plugger” Lynch (pictured on cover). Though retirement will be far from the eight-year senior captain, triple premiership player and 2x club B&F winner’s mind this weekend, as St Kevin’s OB prepare for their knockout Semi-Final against Collegians, the VAFA would like to take this initial opportunity to thank Anthony for his contribution to both the club and the association through his remarkable 17-year stint. To all the other players who have decided to hang up their playing boots come the end of the season, we congratulate you on your playing careers in our competition.

Tan in the spotlight Old Geelong’s Vicky Tan was in the spotlight in the Herald Sun this week following her remarkable BOG performance in the Oggette’s Premier B Reserv Grand Final victory over Old Geelong in August. Standing at just 4ft8, Vicky was a star in the team’s maiden Premiership win – kicking three of the side’s four majors for the afternoon en route to the history-making victory. Congratulations again, Vicky!

Rising Star Nomination Mitchell Scott – Old Trinity M Mitch joined Old Trinity during the 2017 season, and is a product of Trinity Grammar School. Mitch plays like Ryan Burton from the Port Adelaide football club - a dashing defender, who is good at ground level and in the air as well Bu as a great ball user by foot. Mitch is a fantastic character around the club. He is super polite and loves getting ar around the boys on social events.

MILESTONES
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done! Photo: Anthony Pearce
400 GAMES! The VAFA extends its congratulations to Peninsula OB’s SHAUN PAYZE on reaching his 400 game milestone this weekend. Kicking his 1000th senior goal this year, and with the Pirates progressing through to the Division 1 Preliminary Final this weekend, it’s been a huge year for the club legend! Here’s what the club had to say… “Hard to comprehend how the big fella has managed to skate through to this many games, with so few missed. Normally, I’d assume it says something about how hard the player goes in… but we know that’s not the case with Payzey.” “His commitment to our club is unmatched… as are his achievements… as is the effort he brings to training on Tuesday and Thursday nights. That’s what’s always impressed the most. For all the bravado (and there’s a lot of it), he still works like he might not get selected next week.” “That work rate has made us the club we are today.” “He turned off the ‘I can’t’ button a million years ago and that’s why he’ll stand where few have on Saturday... on the step of 400. But truly, we all know the milestone means very little to him without victory on Saturday.” “One of the greatest Pirates you could ever play with, let’s do this mate and roll into our GF.” - Decks.

Congratulations to University Blacks’ HAROLD KING on reaching 100 games - Harv arrived a portly young lad in the Blacks golden age of 2014. Half a season in the U19s was all Harv needed before conquering the height of VAFA heights, the Premier A Reserves Premiership. Harv’s highlights include two seasons of BlackSpot bumpers, Chief of Tin, and now social committee chairman. Fog em up Harv! Congratulations to Old Scotch’s BEN QUINT on reaching 50 games - Ben joined the club from our affiliate Camberwell Sharks Junior Football Club in 2017, playing in U19 premier for two years, including the 2018 Grand Final. This year Ben has played a mix of 2nd & 3rd XVIII and Under 23s. Well done Ben on reaching this significant milestone.

Bullants burrow into GF as Pirates quest continues. Semi-Final 2: Preston Bullants vs UHS-VU
and their lowest total score since Round 16 2015, the Bears will rue their Round 18 loss to Therry Penola that snatched away their double-chance, and set-up this clash with one of the in-form sides of the competition.
For the first time in their short history in the VAFA, joining in 2011, Preston Bullants will feature in Premier C after they won through to the Division 1 Grand Final via a 34-point victory over UHS-VU. Earning their 12 th win in a row and now in the box seat to secure their fourth VAFA premiership since 2013, the Bullants used a ferocious third term to create space between them and the Vultures, booting 6.4 to 1.3 to extend their 10-point half-time lead to 41. Jack Sammartino made it 50 majors for the year with his three-goal effort, while Connor Howard and Matt Holmes received the votes in what we’ve come to expect from Preston; a clinical performance. Producing their second-lowest total for the year (45) and being held scoreless for the first time on record in an opening quarter, Uni High were thoroughly outclassed by their counterparts from siren-to-siren, and will now have to go the long way to create history and win their third consecutive Premiership. Esubalew Ramsay was the only multiple goal-kicker with a double while Isaac Brambley was named his sides best.
PREVIEW Preliminary Final: UHS-VU vs Peninsula Though the Vultures are filled to the brim with finals experience, this will be their first Preliminary Final since 2013, where they went down to Elsternwick by 31 points in Division 3. Peninsula’s last Preliminary Final was in 2016 when they defeated Caulfield Grammarians by 16 points in Premier C to advance to the dizzying heights of B grade. The Pirates have claimed victories in both outings earlier in the year, a 17-point win in Round 8 and a 13-point win in Round 14 at the fortress of Brens Oval. The Vultures enter this clash averaging 91.1 points per game on the year, while the Pirates manage 94.8 points per game, leading the competition. Sam Glenn has booted six goals against UHS this season, while Stefan Barbour, Will Harbinson and Ronald Raworth have each kicked fi ve. Brandon Jackson leads the Vultures with six goals on the season against the Pirates, while Nick Devereux kicked four in one afternoon in Round 14. Two high quality outfi ts that have largely played their footy at different ends of the grading spectrum, with UHS-VU not featuring in any Premier grade since the 1970’s, while Peninsula have been a regular in Premier C since 2012, even climbing into Premier B without a single Premiership flag in tow. The Pirates are riding a wave of momentum towards returning to Premier C and should get the job done this weekend as UHS’ dreams of a triple crown may well be coming to an end.
Semi-Final 1: Kew vs Peninsula Awaiting UHS for a spot in Premier C in 2020 will be Peninsula after they continued their rich vain of form in a 44-point win over Kew, ending the Bears rollercoaster of a season. Much like the Bullants, the Pirates used a dominant third-quarter to create some space between them and Bears, booting 5.3 to 0.0 that term to turn a nine-point advantage into a 42-point lead entering the final stanza. In just his fi fth game of the year, George Fletcher played a vital role in the win with three goals while club stalwart Stefan Barbour also kicked three en route to their sixth win from seven matches and eighth win from 10. Ladder-leaders for six-weeks during the home & away season, the Bears aspirations to end their two-year stay in D1 will have to wait another year as they produced a disappointing performance in Saturday’s defeat. Held goalless in the opening quarter for the first time since Round 16 2018, THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2019

Whitefriars Whitewash, Melbourne on a High Semi-Final 2: Whitefriars vs Brunswick
The loss marks the end of a strong home & away season for Glen Eira, who will stay put in Division 2 next year. Ashan Wijayakumara was best for the Unicorns with two of the seven team goals. For Glen Eira, Chad Kadish was BOG.
It was full steam ahead as Whitefriars completed a massive 143-point beating of second-placed Brunswick NOBS, to book their place in the Grand Final and also promote themselves back up to Division 1, where they came from at the end of the 2017 season.
PREVIEW Preliminary Final: Brunswick NOBS vs MHSOB
The Friars booted a colossal 30 goals to reach almost 200 points, to Brunswick’s seven majors, their biggest loss of the year. It was all action down the Friars end as they ended their first quarter with nine goals to two, kicked by a variety of six goal kickers. The Nobbers struggled from the outset to shut down one key forward, as the well known multi-facetted Friars forward-line really exposed their opposition in the first term. By halftime, the Friars had not only booted 105 points, but had an impressive spread of eight goal kickers. The Friars took a 116-point lead into the final term and the Nobbers began to rest players for their all-important knock out Preliminary Final next week, as the margin was too great to make up.
This game, which many would not have predicted, is showcasing the second-placed Brunswick and the surging Melbourne High School in a do-or-die Preliminary Final. These sides will be playing for Division 1 promotion, with a chance to take on the all-conquering Whitefriars in the big dance. The goal for the Nobbers? Simply bounce back from last week’s horror loss. They’ve got the depth and the game plan to beat MHSOB. On both home & away outings this season, the Nobbers have come home victors, in Round 2 by 99 points and by nine points in Round 12. Obviously, the Nobbers first outing saw them flex their muscles and prove their ability and strength, but their telling win in the wetter month of the year shows they can and should be able to weather this storm against the Unicorns. On paper, the Nobbers, behind Whitefriars, are the best defensive side, as they have only allowed the Unicorns seven and four goals in previous meetings. The issue, however, lies in the midfield for both sides, as the game will be decided through the middle. Last week, James Tran and Wijayakumara were seen bursting through the packs in the middle, proving their fi tness at the pointy end of the season for MHSOB. At the other end, the Nobbers are wiping the slate clean and should bounce back quickly from their loss. Dom Sullivan, Jacob Adkins and Chris Ford and ready to apply major scoreboard pressure against a smaller MHSOB side. The one benefi t for the Nobbers may also be their experience on bigger grounds, but don’t be surprised if Melbourne High turn the game into a condensed midfield battle, forcing the Nobbers to win every contest instead of playing their typical wing run-and-carry.
Sam Kieseker’s five goal haul awarded him BOG votes, while James Perrin was amongst the best with his six. For the Nobbers, Nick Burgin was awarded best with one goal. Whitefriars are rightfully on their way back up to Division 1 and look to continue their perfect form in the Grand Final. For the Nobbers, it’s back to the drawing board to regroup quickly, as they face a resurgent MHSOB in next weeks’ Preliminary. Semi-Final 1: Glen Eira vs MHSOB A plucky Melbourne High side have come out shock 11-point victors over a highly-fancied Glen Eira in an impressive Semi-Final battle at Trevor Barker Oval. The Unicorns got off to a bang with the first of the match, but the Gryphons ended up having six scoring shots to the Unicorns four in the opening term - but they struggled to capitalise and take an early runaway lead. The Unicorns had all the power in the second quarter, but ended their domination with 11 points from their 14 scoring shots. It was set up to be an intense second half as the score lay at 29 a piece at half time, as the Unicorn’s managed a game-high 13-point lead in this term before the rain hit hard and heavy and the game slowed right down, with both sides readjusting their styles to lock the ball in. Trailing by three points at the final change of ends, Melbourne High’s Wijakumara burst through the pack in the first 40 seconds of the last term to take his side out to a 10-point lead. His goal would be the only one for both sides in the final term, as the defensive battle ensued to carry the Unicorns over the line in this gusty win.
Will James Tran from the Unicorns dominate the midfield and force the Nobbers to play a slower game? And will the Unicorns continue their red-hot form they’ve been in? Or will the Nobbers come back as if their loss never happened?

Cobras v Animals – who will meet the Bloods? Preliminary Finals week is upon us with Manningham Cobras and Emmaus St Leos clashing this Sunday 8th September at Whitefriars College. The winner of this match will play against Aquinas in the Grand Final, after the Bloods progressed straight through to the big dance following last week’s Semi-Final after they upset the minor premiers by 11 points.
Maghamez proved to be a handful for the Animals defenders with a bag of seven goals. Ben Arnold was adjudged best afield for his impact in the midfield for the Cobras, so the Animals will need to nullify his influence in the contest on Sunday. Cobras forward Anthony Raso has been impressive all season, finishing fourth overall in the leading goal kickers, so if the Animals can stop the forward duo of Raso and Maghamez they will go far in knocking the minor premiers out in straight sets.
The Cobras will be determined heading into this weekend’s “do or die” match, as they will not want to go out in straight sets particularly after winning the minor premiership at the end of the home & away season.
Beluszar will need to continue his strong form up forward for the Animals that has seen him lead the goal kicking at his club, and finish eighth overall in the division. Beluszar will be determined to make his mark on the match, especially after he had a quiet afternoon in Round 16 - one of only three goalless occasions for the year. Also, the Animals will hope that for the second consecutive week, Matt Hill and Jesse Collins make a significant contribution up forward (they knocked three goals last week against Canterbury).
Manningham won both times they have played Emmaus St Leos this season. In their most recent encounter, the Cobras blew the Animals out of the park by 52 points in Round 16 at Koonung Reserve. The dominant performance for the Cobras was won by Jake Cawsey and leading Division 3 goal kicker, Kane Maghamez, as they both kicked four goals apiece alongside Michael Muller who was the Cobras BOG. If the Animals have a chance of causing an upset, they will need to stop Maghamez and Cawsey’s influence in this final to progress through to the ultimate clash in a week’s time.
The Animals will also look for big games from Paul Baranello and Michael Davis, two players who were adjudged best afield for them in their two clashes against the Cobras this season.
In Round 5, the Cobras defeated the Animals by 23 points in a high scoring affair at Bennettswood Sports Ground. Chris Beluszar was the star on that day for the Animals with four goals to his name and
Expect both teams to come out firing and to give it their all with the excitement and thrill of playing in the big dance at the forefront.

Wickers win and an X-Men triumph Semi-Final 1: Elsternwick vs La Trobe University
The result sees the X-Men through to the big dance, while Albert Park face off against Elsternwick in the Preliminary Final this weekend. St Francis Xavier were led by 11 goals to the Coe Show, as Harrison kicked seven and Marcus four. That wasn’t enough to earn them a place in the bests, as Jonathon King claimed top honours for the near unanimous premiership favourites. James Brick was dominant for the Falcons, kicking three and being named their best, while Thomas Wilson was also a hard battler for the Falcons.
Third placed Elsternwick ran rampant over La Trobe University in this knockout Semi-Final match on Sunday afternoon. The Wickers came out firing in the first quarter, booting six goals to one, leading by 30 points at the first change. An even second quarter saw one goal apiece, and Elsternwick hosting a 32 point lead at the main break. Another dominant quarter saw Elsternwick again increase their lead, going into the final change with a comfortable 54-point buffer, before a quiet final quarter saw the final margin 62 points in favour of the Wickers. Julian Yeatman was back at his best for the Bombers, kicking four goals, while Scott Carter also kicked two. Lachlan Lloyd was the pick of the bunch for the victors, who progress through to the Preliminary Final next week. The Trobers ended their season with no multiple goal scorers, but were led by Andy Castles, who was prolific on the day as he has been all season.
PREVIEW Preliminary Final: Albert Park vs Elsternwick Albert Park and Elsternwick’s epic seasons has one final twist, as the two sides who finished just four premiership points apart do battle for the chance at promotion, and more importantly, a premiership. The two match-ups between the two teams during the home & away season saw two victories go the way of Albert Park. The first contest, in Round 8, was a thumping 62-point win to the Falcons. Three goals to Alistair Lupo were the catalyst for the Falcons, while Justin Hunter also played his part for the Wickers, kicking three goals himself. The second contest was a much closer affair, as Albert Park overcame the Wickers by 11 points. Nicholas Lowrie booted two for the Wickers that day, as did Julian Yeatman. The Falcons were led by four goals to James Brick and two to Thomas Wilson on the day.
Semi-Final 2: St Francis Xavier OC vs Albert Park A seesawing match for a place in the Grand Final and a chance for promotion up the lengthy VAFA section ladder. The first quarter saw the premiership favourites, St Francis Xavier, take a two goal lead before a resilient Albert Park fought back to take the lead at the major break. The X-Men exploded out of the blocks of half time, smashing through nine goals in the third quarter to the Falcons one, leading by 33 points heading into the final quarter. The final quarter was full of excitement, as Albert Park now had control of the scoring end. The Falcons held the X-Men goalless for the final quarter, but just couldn’t kick enough goals, in the end going down by 14 points.
The contest will be enthralling, and will go down at Waverley Oval at 2:30 pm on Sunday afternoon.
