All Premierships have been decided in our Men’s sections and our Women’s competitions with a huge congratulations to all those who tasted victory and commiserations to the runners up.

The returnedcompetitionMen’stoafullseasonin2022andhasbeenagreatsuccess.

If that is not enough, 5 days later the Premier C Grand Final will be decided in the historic Friday 23rd September clash between Monash Blues and the victor of this weekend’s Preliminary final which sees Hampton Rovers do battle with Old Geelong.

The Men’s competition returned to a full season in 2022 and has been a great success. Since 2019, the impact of Covid has seen our men’s registration numbers reduced by around 9.5% which is far below the impact felt by many other competitions and other sports.

Our Umpire’s Awards Night was held recently at Marvel Stadium and was a wonderful celebration of the VAFAUA’s community. Much work still needs to be done in the recruitment and retention of umpires with a key focus in growing participation for women umpires. To enhance this we are looking to source funding to build a new facility for our male and female umpires at Elsternwick Park that would combine meeting rooms, change rooms, press box, scoreboard box and spectator amenities.

We are now into the last 7 days of the 2022 VAFA season, the William Buck Premier Men’s Grand Finals. Saturday will see University Blacks take on Old Haileybury and on Sunday, the minor premiers St Kevin’s will face Old Brighton who will be contesting the Premier A-Section Grand Final for the first time since 2007. Fighting for the right to claim the title of the best Amateur team in the competition.

Good luck to all clubs.

Sunday morning will also see Old Brighton and Old Xaverians play off in the prestigious Holmesglen Under 19 Premier Men’s decider.

In front of a large and engaged crowd, one of the great finishes of the season was played out with Ivanhoe AFC winning an epic battle by a point to win their first premiership in over 50 years. A magnificent feat indeed by a club that has had its own journey but for me the real highlight was the wonderful aftermatch Onepresentation.teameuphoric

To the VAFA Board, my many thanks for your continuous work and enthusiasm. We have only been together since April this year and yet we have achieved many things, some I have mentioned above but I will further highlight others at the AGM later this year. Many clubs have told me that they have been delighted in seeing their Board members at their grounds this year, listening and looking to discuss how we can do better as a VAFA Finallycommunity.spread

George Voyage – VAFA President

It is also our intention to bring back “the match of the round” to Elsternwick park in the future and play football under lights which will add another dimension of player and supporter Fromexperience.aBoard update, the Governance group is working on the final stages of the new Constitution with a view of consulting with our members shortly.

I take this opportunity to thank all volunteers at our clubs for your efforts throughout the year and to recognize all our staff and especially our VAFA CEO’s Mr. Brett Connell, Mr. Peter Grant and Mr. Jason Reddick for your tireless work and for making it all happen as we negotiated our way through Covid and now into the future.

after such a victory, the other crestfallen, it was the words of the two captains which caught my attention as both clubs were so humble in recognizing the performance of each other. The behaviour of the crowd was exemplary. Both the players and spectators respect for the umpires made it an even more memorable occasion and highlights everything the VAFA stands for in sportsmanship.

I would like to highlight the Division 2 Men’s Final played last Sunday at Sandringham, between Ivanhoe and West Brunswick. As the match approached its end, the game was in the balance and with dark clouds descending, the last few minutes were played in dark murky conditions with either side giving a quarter.

A new and succinct Board charter is ready for implementation along with the much awaited Affiliation fee review well under way. Finally a detailed Strategic Plan will soon be ratified providing us with the strategies direction and plans for the next 5 years for our VAFA community.

The VAFA was successful in securing funding of $1 million from the State Government for new lighting and spectator facilities at Elsternwick Park and these will be implemented as soon as possible.

As part of this direction it is our intention to incorporate the landmark State Government Fair Access Policy Roadmap in our plans to ensure that the VAFA will always provide environments that are welcoming, accessible and inclusive for

Oureveryone.Commercial team are working on exciting media outcomes to increase our audience reach, a partnership with Newscorp over the finals series through live streaming on their platform KommunityTV. New sponsorship and stakeholder opportunities are also being explored at the same time acknowledging the continued support of our wonderful long term partners especially William Buck, Holmesglen Institute, Sherrin, Anytime Fitness, Mecwacare and BJS Insurance Brokers, to which we thank them enormously.

On to the Grand Finals. Good luck to all.

Tom Blamires isn’t overawed by anything or anyone at his age. Neither Jordan Segar in the forward line. Darby Hipwell and Sam Collins (both on VFL lists) have both turned 20 this year. While Oscar Lewis is one of the most exciting prospects across the half back flank.

Old Brighton is a freight train stopping at no stations. Three consecutive knockout games in a row, their pressure at the contest, and score on the board has stood up.

The middle of the ground is going to be fascinating. Cam Hodges, Luke Winter, Tom Jok and his best mate Goy Lok will lock horns with Darby Hipwell, Max Kennedy, Tom Fisher and his best mate Harry Hill.

In the forward line of St Kevins Paddy Kerr, Shaun Kennedy and Phil Edgar will have to compete against Will Lewis, Quintin Montanaro and Alfie TheJarnestrom.backsix

The rising stars

The wiley veterans of the St Kevins side - Sam Critchley and Will Coates, both men know what’s needed today. Old Brighton don’t do veterans, they are the Benjamin Button team of the VAFA, the average age seems to get younger but Tom Yorgey is one who will relish a contest like this. As will Petrus Olivier.

They’re everywhere. The next crop of talent to drive these sides to further Lukesuccess.Winter is on the radar of AFL clubs such has been his influence in the St Kevins midfield. Jack Darmody is dangerous around the goal. Ben Mansfield has found a regular spot in the team. Al Richards and Cal Jones are both 22 with plenty of upside.

Both sides in 2022 are stacked with home-grown talent. Almost all players either graduated from St Kevins College or Brighton Grammar. A feather in the caps of both clubs.

Here we are. Grand Final Day for 2022.

of the 18-man press will be led by Conor Ross, Michael Pisker and Josh Tynan. Hoping to curb the influence of Anthony Zimmerman, Michael Karayanis and Jordan Segar.

For all the twists and turns of the world in the last three years, and for all the twists and turns we’ve had throughout this home and away season. We’ve got the best two teams left standing in William Buck Premier. The powerhouse of St Kevins. The youthful exuberance of Old Brighton.

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S PREVIEW

Joe Pignataro

These sides have been on similar paths across the previous 15 years. Playing in the same section most of those years. Premier B, or William Buck Premier. Never crossing paths in a final. The last time they met in a Grand Final was 1997 in Premier B, Old Brighton secured the title.

St Kevins, celebrating their 75th anniversary, are here for the fourth consecutive season. Two titles in 2017 and 2018. Runner up medallions in Old2019.Brighton, featuring in an A-Grade Grand Final for just the second time in the club’s 55 year history. One Grand Final, in 2007, a loss to Old Xaverians. They’ve had success in Premier B twice in the last decade, but this is a different kettle of fish.

Will Lewis has become a full-forward turned full-back. Jackson Paine, Xavier Richards, Dave Mirra. Paddy Kerr awaits as his next challenge. Paired up with his brother Oscar, they’re a lethal pair coming out of the Tonners backline.

Can the #1 defence in the game hold out a team that’s riding high on momentum? Not much more needs to be said about the 18-man press. It has worked all year. Minor Premiers. 16 wins this season, an average score of 51.1 points kicked against them.

Led by Anthony Lynch, a St Kevin’s and VAFA legend, in his debut season as coach. It’s been remarkable the way this team has maintained its excellence at the top of the ladder week in, week out.

It’s been 1,093 days since we last had a William Buck Premier Grand Final.

GRAND FINAL CLUB REVIEW - SKOB

St Kevins are in rare air. Heading into the 2022 William Buck Premier Grand Final, no team in more than 40 years of A-Grade VAFA football has produced a defensive number like they have.

Paddy Kerr is the key pillar up in the forward line, he has kicked 43 goals this season. Tom Jok loves the wide expanses of Elsternwick Park, expect to see him roaming up and down the grandstand wing. Luke Winter has put his name in lights in 2022, in strong contention for this year’s Rising Star, the grunt work in the midfield.

6

Stalwarts of the side Cal Matheson, Conor Ross, Sam Critchley, and Will Coates. All Premiership players that know what’s required of them to get over the line.

It will be the telling factor in this year’s title.

The powerhouse that was Ormond in 1989 is the closest numerical comparison. 1,099 points against, at an average of 61 points per game. This SKOB side only conceded 51.1 points per game in the home and away season 2022.

Who are the players to watch?

St Kevin’s 15 wins, 3 losses | Points For: 1539 | Points Against: 920

In the clubs 75th anniversary season, they are staring down the barrel of a dynasty which puts them in line to be compared with the Uni Blacks of the 1950’s, Old Paradians of the 1960’s, De La Salle and Ormond of the 1980’s, and Old Xav’s of the 1990’s.

What’s more impressive is they don’t play the dour, slow, boring football. They score heavily the other way, Paddy Kerr, Phil Edgar, Jack Darmody and Shaun Kennedy have a license to shoot when in range. They’re names you want to get the ball in quickly to, and it shows being the #1 side for inside 50’s in 2022.

A brick wall in defence, rank #1 for intercept marks, lethal kicks with the ball in hand on the turnover.

Paul Roos’ mantra of ‘defensive wins Premierships’ definitely rings true for the boys from T H King Oval.

The season started on the right foot under Anthony Lynch in his debut season, six wins on the trot. A fortnight of losses gave him his first look at different challenges. The club was quick to stabilise again, nine wins from the final 10 home and away games handed them the minor premiership.

Where will it be won?

In defence. The 18 man press. Implemented in the pre-season, using a now famous drone. It will be on show, and it will be magnificent to watch. In the second semi-final, Collegians, despite kicking six goals in the second term, finished the game with 52 points. 1 point above the average St Kevins has conceded all year. Harry Hill. The #1 captain in the game. He single handedly wills himself and his team over the line most weeks. Be it a ground ball clearance, a snap goal or a bone crunching tackle. Hill sets the tone for theTonners every weekend. Away from Hill, Anthony Zimmerman is the Darren Jarman of the finals, silky, classy, a marvel around goal, and supported by Michael Karayannis.

Where do you start with the team that plays footy the exact way finals football was designed to be played?

Will Lewis, known for his talent up forward, during this ‘knockout’ finals run, he has been deployed to full-back, stopping the likes of Jackson Paine, Xavier Richards and Dave Mirra. Also, picking up 25 touches himself in games.

They are the #1 rank side in all areas you want to head into a Grand Final ranked first in: contested possessions, clearances, hard ball gets, tackles and the one percenters.

GRAND FINAL CLUB REVIEW - BRIGHTON

During the ‘wobbly’ period through the home and away season, Greg Hutchison has had to call on 46 players to get to today. The most of any team in the top four. The continuity and consistency was tested as the world went back to normal, European holidays and injuries part of the make up of Old Brighton.

Basically three knockout finals to still be alive in 2022. They are now one win away from achieving the clubs inaugural A-Grade Premiership. A feat that is 55 years in the making.

1203

Nothing overawes these brash, young, confident kids. They do the grunt work on the inside, complemented by the class on the outside. You have to see it to believe it.

Where will it be won?

In tight. Contested. No one ranks higher than Old Brighton in the hustle and bustle of the contest. It’s a surge mentality, it’s the mental fortitude to hit one pack after the other after the other. Make it a scrap. Break even in the first three quarters, they may be holding a trophy on Sunday night.

Leading into Round 18, they had a must win battle with Old Melburnians (then fourth) to swap places on the ladder and play finals. Box ticked. In the first semi-final, against Old Xaverians to advance to the Preliminary Final, again, they had to play do-or-die footy. Box ticked.

The powerhouse of St Kevins holds no fear for them, in fact, they relish it. Four of their last five matches with SKOB have been decided by 4 points or less, three of them have fallen in favour of the Tonners.

Who are the players to watch?

The Tonners were inside the top four right up until the end of Round 17. The sure things at Brighton Beach Oval had become wobbly. The fortress was starting to crumble. Or so we thought.

Against Collegians, a team who showed them up during the home and away season at BBO. They weren’t leaving this game to chance, playing Russian roulette with their season, and a spot in the Grand Final on the line. Box ticked.

As the game wore on the pressure came from the middle with the barometer in Brede Seccull working tirelessly for the ball, allowing Noah Gown and Brodie Steele to get to work in front of goal. The Sharks stepped up their intensity with goals to Sam and Josh Gibbins keeping them in the game. Meanwhile Conor Murphy’s run and carry on the wing and handy goal helped nudge the Sharks in the right direction. However, Old Haileybury found all the answers, working cohesively to extend their lead to 47-points.

Despite their season ending there, the Sharks have lots to look forward to in 2023 with a young group coming through, including Tom Spencer, who’s return to footy on the weekend gives Beauy fans lots to look forward to. Beaumaris are likely to be Premier B front runners next year alongside Old Trinity, St Bernard’s coming down from A grade. On the other side of the coin, it was an emotional ending for club champions Matt Petering, Rob Cathcart and Scott Gower playing their final game in the blue and yellow.

Eliza Wright

The Sharks Fall Victim to the Bloods’ Finals Rampage

GRAND FINAL TIP

From there Old Haileybury ran away with the game as Samuel Loewe’s speed and football IQ saw no sign of wavering, recording fourth goals for the day. A fifth goal awarded the way of Jack Lonie well and truly closed the curtains for The Sharks 2022 season. A final score of Old Haileybury 17.11-113 to Beaumaris 4.9-33 sends Old Haileybury into the 2022 Premier B Grand Final and promotion into William Buck Premier in 2023.

Having won the week off and a ticket straight into the big dance, no doubt the Blackers will be gearing up for a tough battle. The Uni Blacks long awaited return to A grade is finally here, after their 2017 season saw them relegated to Premier B. Since then, this side have improved by leaps and bounds with their defence being second to none. This season they’ve conceded an average of 42.4 points, an exceptional feat rarely achieved by teams. The Blackers will be hoping their finals experience will put them in good stead with 10 players including Josh Steadman, Jordan Quaile, Cam Moorfield and Hugh Curnow using the 2018 and 2019 prelim finals heartbreaks as their motivation for victory.

This is set to be fiery with a heavily contested game on our hands.

10THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

It was all downhill from there for the Sharks, with their tentative game style not enough to keep up with Old Haileybury. Despite this, a commendable effort to Lewis Diggins, remaining determined for the footy and holding down The Sharks defence alongside Jak Nardino putting his body on the line for Beauy.

This appetite for victory showed from the first siren to the last with momentum certainly in Old Haileybury’s favour. The Bloods got out to a 38-point lead with Kye Turner bringing the backline heat early, restricting Beaumaris to a single point for quarter. Jack Lonie capitalised on this pressure, booting three goals to start his tally.

Finals footy is well and truly alive at Elsternwick Park and Saturday’s Premier B semi-final against Beaumaris and Old Haileybury had us all ready to go. Coming off a 32-point loss against the Uni Blacks in round one, Beaumaris had their fingers crossed to keep their finals campaign alive. As for Old Haileybury, their come from behind win and never say die attitude in last week’s semi-final had them hungry for the footy. Having not beaten the Sharks in the home and away season, the Bloods had everything to play for and nothing to lose.

Old Haileyburyv University Blacks

Additionally, Old Haileybury will enjoy 7 VFL players returning to their side, enhancing their line up even more. This marks the first time since 2011 that Old Haileybury have been in the William Buck Premier Division, having climbed the ranks since their 2017 C grade premiership.

Preview University Blacks v Old Haileybury

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER B MEN’S PREVIEW

Old Haileybury have been the only team to defeat the University Blacks throughout the year, overpowering the Blackers by 46 points in round 11. This coupled with their current form will act as a catalyst to their game style.

As for Old Haileybury, their forward line is the heartbeat of their side with an average winning margin of 93 points across the last five games of the home and away season. Among this group is Durras Seccull, who has kicked a huge 60 goals for this year, leading the goal kicking by 14 goals.

They kicked four goals for the term, but again Old Geelong managed to score at the defensive end of the ground. It was only one goal, but a vital goal it was as it stopped Mazenod’s charge in its tracks and just gave them too much to do. When the siren sounded to end proceedings, it was Old Geelong that lived to play another day, by seven points.

Nick Peck played a great game in defence for Mazenod, as he has all season. Caspersz finished with four majors for the afternoon, and Tom Warby and Liam Welsford were strong. For the victors there were none better on the day than Jack Sheridan, whilst Nick Freeman and Will Horsfall let no-one down.

Blues finished with 14 goals for the day to win by 66 points. Leading forward Nick Darling kicked four goals for Monash Blues, Tom le Lievre three, and Mitch King and Riley Smart two each. Macgregor Cameron gave another masterclass for Monash and James Flett was also excellent. Oscar Roberts, Joel Melnjak and Harrison McIntyre were best in a well-beaten Hampton Rovers side that showed good endeavour but were outclassed on the day.

The Rovers made all the running in the opening ten minutes, but where they needed goals to create pressure, they could only manage behinds: six of them without registering a goal in the first term. Monash Blues found the big sticks twice to lead by seven points at the first change.

Old Geelong ended Mazenod’s season in a fascinating and fluctuating first semi-final at Ford Park. The tale of the tape was that there was a definitive scoring end, with 24 of the match’s 29 goals coming with the aid of the Belfield breeze and Old Geelong using the conditions marginally the better, particularly in the second quarter. The Geelong boys had the first use of the breeze, and whilst Mazenod went forward into the breeze early they were unable to capitalise on the early territorial advantage.

Monash are not the types to let loose their grip on a side once they have established a measure of control, and this trait was not going to change with a grand final berth on the line. Hampton managed their first goal during the second quarter, but that was all whilst Monash kicked four of their own to lead by 25 at the half.

The contenders get serious

PRELIMINARY FINAL TIP

Monash Blues became the first side into the Premier C Men’s Grand Final after a comprehensive victory over Hampton Rovers at Frearson Reserve. The Rovers came into the match short on some of their key personnel, and short on form, and they needed to be right on their game against the competition’s pacesetters.

Theend.

third quarter, Old Geelong turned their four-goal half-time deficit into a four-goal advantage turning for home. Even though leading goalkicker Chris Hatzis was kept quiet, Connor Dixon and John Simson stepped up with four goals each for the day. Both contributed to a dominant Old Geelong term in which they kicked eight goals to Mazenod’s two behinds which threw down the challenge to the Nodders in the final stanza.

PREMIER C MEN’S PREVIEW

Hampton Rovers now takes on Old Geelong on Saturday at Trevor Barker Oval in Sandringham, with the winner to advance to the Grand Final against Monash Blues.

The second quarter though is, in effect, where Old Geelong won the match. They kicked three goals into the wind, and given that only two further goals were kicked to that end for the rest of the day those three majors were

The first week of Premier C Men’s Finals saw Mazenod’s season end, whilst Monash Blues staked their claim for outright premiership contention.

Old Geelong kicked three goals to Mazenod’s one in the first term and there was the school of thought that said that was not a great enough lead in the conditions, especially when the Nodders started scoring from the jump in the second quarter. Luke Caspersz began to gain a foothold in the forward half, and he brought the other forwards into the game with him, with the result being nine Mazenod goals for the term.

Old Geelongv Hampton Rovers

If the Rovers were to be any chance, they needed a quick start to the second half, and unfortunately, they did not get one. Monash were to only give up one goal in the third quarter and one more in the fourth in a clinical defensive display. They did not give the Rovers a sniff and were able to play at their own pace in attack without fear of being overrun at the other

Chillie started with the VAFA in 1978 as a 17-year-old boundary umpire. After a season on the boundary, he moved to the field, where remained until 1994. From 1995 through to the present day he struts the goal-line of VAFA venues. Chillie has umpired countless grand finals, including the 1987 A section, and the 1987 representative match at the Adelaide Oval. That 1987 A-section Grand Final saw Ormond prevail against Old Xaverians by 17 points, is on top of the list for Segota when it comes to ranking the games he’s been involved in.

In his debut all eyes were on the youngster in the number 48 jumper. Old Melburnians proved no slouch as an opponent, but the Xavs debutant kicked seven goals with his first seven kicks in senior football. He’s achieved more than most – senior premierships in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2013, and 2016; a Big V player, captain, and Ireland tourist; four times the leading goalkicker in the Premier section, and a dozen times or more the leading goalkicker for the Red and Blacks, with a goal tally just shy of 900. Such is the esteem in which he is held at Toorak Park that last year he became the club’s first-ever active player to be elevated to life membership. Over a decade and a half, Chopper has earned the unqualified respect of teammates and opponents.

One of the VAFA’s all-time legends, Matthew Handley, the Lion of Toorak Park, takes the field for his 300th game with Old Xaverians in the Premier Reserves Grand Final. The big then-blond turned out for the Old Xaverians U19s in 2005 and had a strong season in front of the sticks. In round 1 the following year, he returned from Bali to debut for the Reserves, snapping a late winner against Uni Blues.

For the record it was Bailey who finished with 2 goals. PEGS walked away with the points, but it was a day to remember nonetheless.

Pistons began playing for Ormond in 1995, and since that time has played 39 Senior games, 190 Reserves games and 170 Thirds games. Along the way he has enjoyed team and individual success: a Reserves premiership in 1998; and Reserves BnF in 1996 and 1999.

Old Camberwell’s resurgence was supported by Riley Verbi who managed to register three majors for the afternoon while Ben Hart and James Allen were also key pillars in trying to keep Old Camberwell in the contest. The half time break saw the Wellers equal to the challenge as they tried to lean on the momentum generated in the second quarter.

For PEGS it’s party time as they celebrate their premiership season success while for Old Camberwell Grammarians they are left to regroup after a tough loss and prepare for Premier C action next year.

VAFA DIVISION ONE REVIEW

Saturday’s grand final saw PEGS start their own typical way, playing with speed and scoring power as they kicked the first six goals of the game to build a quarter time margin of 39 points and leaving Old Camberwell goalless in the first quarter.

The Division One Grand Final has been run and won with PEGS taking out the premiership, defeating Old GrammariansCamberwell by 27 points to cap off their remarkable season.

PEGS have finished off the season with only one loss and their dominance has been one of the most impressive team performances throughout the VAFA competition this year. It’s been a near perfect season for them with a plethora of positives to take to their next challenge in Premier C.

The second half however saw PEGS pull away. Like they have done throughout season 2022 their defence strangled Old Camberwell and their forward line chipped in with a busy afternoon in front of the goals. Jack Fenner was once again sensational with four goals added to his name for the afternoon alongside Riley Simmons who

With PEGS only conceding an average of 39 points against throughout the season, it was going to be challenging to break through their defence, but Old Camberwell did in the second quarter with two goals on the board and bridging the margin back to 25 points before the main break. They also restricted PEGS in front of goal as they kept them goalless in the second quarter, something that most teams haven’t been able to do against the standout team of the year.

Likewise, the Wellers have had an unbelievable finals run to also advance up a division to Premier C. Both teams will certainly build up a world of confidence next year and it seems their quest to work up the grades has begun.

Old Camberwell Grammarians have had a sensational finals series journey to get to last weekend’s grand final, mirroring what Old Brighton have done in the Premier division. They finished the season in fourth position and against the odds defeated Glen Eira in the first week of finals and then in the preliminary final upset Kew to advance to the big dance.

In the battle of the black and white stripes it was West Brunswick who came out all guns blazing, hellbent on making life difficult for the Hoers who’ve been the form side of Division 2 all season.

One point ahead. Crowd at fever pitch. The ball camped at centre half forward for West Brunswick. One last ditch effort. A flying shot to the top of the goal square, bodies crash in, the ball fisted away. Sent back in, as it’s going towards the goal face the siren sounds, the ball falls short and Ivanhoe AFC are Premiers bringing home their first title in 53 years.

A moment to savour, a moment to cherish for Ivanhoe AFC

Congratulations to Ivanhoe AFC, the best side of Division 2 all season. Commiserations to West Brunswick, sometimes footy doesn’t deserve a loser, they produced an incredible performance, coming so close to pulling off an incredible heist. Division 1 awaits both these sides next year and without doubt further tight encounters will follow.

The five point quarter time lead by the Magpies was extended to 25 points at half time. Everything that could go right was going right. Billy Hutchins was hitting the scoreboard, Luke Buckler kicking goals. Regular members of the best players Turnbull, Risstrom and Ferrier all ‘running on top of the ground’.

Joe Pignataro follow

Even at three quarter time, a 20 point lead was the gap between the two sides with the Hoers unable to make a real dent in the half-time deficit. However, as has been the sign of the Magpies in the AFL, the Magpies in the VAFA, 20 points is within touching distance.

The first goal of the final quarter came at the 3.30 minute mark through Close. The West Brunswick reply came thirty seconds later through the very next clearance. The 2021 J Fullerton Medallist Wayne Schultz was enormous from there roving every tap from ruckman Gerard Williams. Scott Selwood across half back, and Vivian Blackmore-Moore providing drive off the half back flank.

Wayne Schultz walks from the ground with a Premiership medallion and best on ground honours. An incredible return from the man who came to the club in 2021 just to have a kick with his mates.

22 VAFA DIVISION THREE REVIEW THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

You are South Melbourne Districts and you are both Division 3 Men’s and Division 3 Men’s Reserves Premiers. There are medallions around your necks and you’re off to Division 2 Men’s next year!

In front of goal for South Melbourne Districts and arguably five of their most important players, George Dixon (3) and, unsurprisingly, Oliver Dufficy (2) were the multiple-goalscorers, while Jamie Brooker and Leigh Sfetkidis also got on the board.

Let’s set the scene. It’s the end of the 2021 season, and it’s just been cut short, which means no finals. You’ve finished second on the Division 4 Men’s ladder, by percentage only, and you’ve been winning games by enormous margins, even in your Reserves games, where you’ve finished the year on the top. You get promoted to Division 3 Men’s for 2022 – a whole season is played where you spend most of your time flitting between positions on the ladder until you solidify top spot for the better part of the last eight games.

Commiserations to Parkside, who admirably fought it out until the final siren, and congratulations to South Melbourne Districts, it appears red and white does look better on you.

To say this year has been a dream run for the Bloods in an understatement of the largest degree. It took them a while to steady the ship, but it was obvious from the beginning that they had the potential to go deep into the year.

The same could be said for Parkside, who peaked at the right time after a rollercoaster start to the season to hold tight onto fourth spot on the ladder, despite pressure from all sides. A competitive 2021 also saw them lose out on the opportunity to contest at finals, finishing second on the ladder by a sliver of percentage

After 18 rounds and 2 weeks of finals, the Division 4 Men’s season came down to two teams, Swinburne University and La Trobe University. Both had met earlier in the year three times with La Trobe having a dominant win by 115 points on the first occasion. Their second meeting however was much closer with La Trobe only narrowly defeating the Razorbacks by 22 points. In the first week of finals, La Trobe won convincingly by 80 points. This match was truly anyone’s for the taking however, the Trobers would be considered Bothfavourites.teams got off to a slow start with only 2 goals kicked for the quarter however both of those goals were kicked by La Trobe seeing them get out to an early 13-point lead at quarter time. The second quarter saw both teams start to attack with both sides kicking 3 goals in the second quarter. Heading into half-time, it was the Trobers that maintained a small 14-point lead.

La Trobe will now go up to Division 3 Men’s for the 2023 season in what will be a major step up, however after an incredible season it will be good to see how they fair. For Swinburne, if they go up to division 3 they too will be taking a major step up in competition however if they remain in division 4 they will go into next season being premiership favourites, hungry to raise the cup after the final siren of the seasons’ final match.

Heading into the third quarter, the Razorbacks knew that if they were to be a chance, they had to have a huge third quarter and that they did. Swinburne dominated for the full 20 minutes with a 6-goal to 1 quarter, gaining momentum and taking a 17-point lead into the final term. La Trobe was on the back foot and after such an incredible season, they just needed to find another level for the final quarter and that they did. The Trobers took the game back, kicking an unanswered 5 goals to run away with the game and securing promotion and the club’s first 2009.premiershipseniorsince

St Kevins and Kew were the best two teams of the season, so it was fitting they got to face off for the first premiership in three seasons. The game started tight with high pressure from both teams and lots of stoppages. Tackles were the theme early, with both teams not giving the other any room for possession.

The penultimate clearance would go the way of St Kevins, this time it was Sarah Cameron who was going for goals and despite her earlier troubles in front of goals she nailed this kick to guarantee the victory for St Kevins. The last center bounce of the game was also won by St Kevins and with just a few seconds to go, there was a free kick that once again saw Sarah Cameron kicking for goal, it was another goal to sweeten the win and see St Kevins come away with a 23 point win to claim back to back pppremierships.

Kew kicked off the second quarter with a strong clearance, but the possession was quickly taken away by St Kevins who transitioned well into their attack. This was an indication that St Kevins were again ready to step up a notch and take the game on. Kew were fighting hard to get the ball out of their defensive line, but were unable to find targets to clean possession. St Kevins were everywhere early in the quarter, not willing to give Kew an inch and keeping the ball locked in their attacking half. The tackling from Kew did not let up, the players doing all they could to keep St Kevins away from goals and to get momentum swinging their way.

MCC joined St Bede’s, Beaumaris, and Hampton to become the fourth Premier to complete a perfect 2022 season. The Cardinals were the only women’s team capable of claiming ‘back to back’ premierships, having defeated Old Brighton for the 2019 Division 1 title. And, they’ve come out on top against Fitzroy coming from behind with four goals in the second half to snatch victory from the Roys.

When the teams lined up and the Australian National Anthem was played, it was a ‘shivers down your spine’ moment for sure. Rovers were seven points up going into the final quarter, but it seemed like Albert Park had all the momentum. The Rovers were able to withstand the onslaught from the Falcons to hold on by 2 points when the siren sounded.

Albert Park have performed incredibly well after being elevated in Round 3 from Division 3 to Division 2. It was an historic day for the club winning their first senior women’s Premiership.

Their opponents, Parkdale, know all about winning streaks, having risen up the ranks from Division 4 where they were 9-0 at the end of the 2021 abandoned

Fitzroy finished the season on top of the ladder and had beaten Old Scotch twice this season, by 6 points and 4 points.

Beaumaris completed the perfect season of 16-0 beating Old Camberwell who made the grand final from third spot, overcoming 2019 Division 2 Premiers Therry Penola in the first semi by 2 points, and then upsetting Old Haileybury in the Preliminary Final.

Old Scotch made the grand final from 4th position after a stirring last quarter full of goal highlights last week against Old Brighton.

GRAND FINAL TIP Old Xaverians v Old Brighton By 16 points f the st not seen

The key for this Xav’s outfit will be to mitigate the run and flow of this Old Brighton side who took the chocolates in a round 17 battle, and if they are able to release players like Sammy Noonan and Hayden Woodhouse, they could pull off a memorable heist not seen in recent years for the Under 19’s.

Old Xaverians are aiming to finish off their demolition season having only dropped one game for the entirety of the year, a feat rarely seen in the modern game.

It’s no secret that Xav’s boasts an almighty core to go with their elite senior side. Eddie Kennedy has kicked 57 goals for the year, Thomas Dunne and Hugh Basset running riot around the ground. Their hard nosed brand of football is tough to penetrate and even harder to score against, with their average points against across the season 36 points.

They’re strong, fast and flashy… but are they enough to beat the best?

Old Brighton aren’t here to take simply take part, but to take over. Sending Old Scotch packing a fortnight ago they backed up their exciting brand of football with a big win over Williamstown in the Preliminary Final. We are set for a show stopping conclusion for this 2022 season.

Collegians extended their lead to 79-points in the premiership quarter as speed and agility from Oscar Glover and Curtis Collins kept the pressure

Old Xaverians walked off Elsternwick Park triumphant over Old Trinity by 23 points. Having lost just one game for the season the red and black mafia were stunned in the second semi-final by Old Trinity going down by 59 points and having to go the long way around to get to the Grand Final.

Peaking at the right time, they eliminated Mazenod convincingly to advance to the Preliminary Final, took redemption over PEGS whom they hadn’t beaten this season and then kept Parkside to their lowest score of the season when it matters most en route to an unlikely but pleasantly rewarded Premiership.

The margin remained close in the second term with Hamish Gee nudging Old Brighton closer to the lead. Despite the 1-point deficit leading into the third quarter, Old Brighton couldn’t keep the pressure up with Ivanhoe risking and rolling their way to a 27-point lead.

The Ivanhoe forward line was firing on all cylinders with 7 goal kickers pushing Ivanhoe to victory, including Lucas Keyhoe and Declan Cremasco both kicking 2 and tirelessly pursuing the ball. At the sound of the final siren, scores read Old Brighton 12.11-83 to Ivanhoe 12.11-83.

It was friend against friend on Saturday, September 10 with Elsternwick Park set for an all-Old Xavierians’ Grand Final between the Blacks and Reds. The Reds were crowned the minor premiers for the home and away season, finishing on 60 points, followed closely by the Blacks on 56 points. After the first round of finals saw the Blacks trounce the Reds, the Reds were forced to take the scenic route to the big dance, overpowering

Thomas Paul and Finn Mccombe also earned a spot among the Black’s best, determined to keep their side in the lead. The Reds fought hard until the dying seconds of the game trailing by 13-points mid-way through the last quarter. Despite the best effort of the Reds, the final siren saw the Blacks in front by 8 goals, with a final score of Blacks 5.12-42 to Reds 5.4-34.

The Reds got going as Lucas Agnoletto and Michael Dowdell helped decrease this margin to 3-points. Sensational effort from Daniel Condon, kicking 2 goals and working hard all day for the Black’s forward line.

The stage was set at Elsternwick Park for the Premier Thirds as Old Xaverians went head-to-head with Old Melburnians. With both sides finishing the year on 40 points, there was no denying this was set to be a cracking game.

It was a close first quarter as Old Melburnians trailed by 3 points at the first break. Oliver Silk and Joshua Hanger continued their hard work for Old Xav’s, making the most of their time with the footy. Old Melbournians got going in the second with plenty of run and carry from Stewart Madsen urging them to a 7-point lead.

It was a grandstand finish to the 2022 Mecwacare Masters season. Oakleigh held off a fast-finishing De La Salle to claim the title. The inaugural title in the Mecwacare Masters by 3 points. It was the men in yellow and blue who started off stronger kicking three goals in the opening quarter to go into the first change with a 10 point lead.

Division 3

The green, blue and purple monster of the Old Paradians lifted the trophy against Parkside in a low-scoring tight affair. Having lost the final two home and away games (one of those to Parkside), the Paradians had to settle with third place going into the finals.

Down by 12 points with 90 seconds left in the first half, Oakleigh took momentum of De La with Ryan Tily earning a free kick 75m out from goal and sending home a monster bomb. Followed up by Doherty, right on the half-time siren with scores all level.

Making it there is one thing. To own the game is another. The T’s put up a fight early on in the contest before the brute strength of Xav’s overpowered them in the Premiership quarter. They played out the final quarter knowing the Premiership was in the bag and the celebrations began to kickstart the finals campaign for the boys of Toorak Park.

Thirds

A five-point deficit confronted Oakleigh but was gone 60 seconds into the final quarter with a quick fire goal from the first stoppage, followed up by another goal. Then it was hold on for dear life as De La did everything they could to snatch back the line.

Williamstown didn’t let that stop them with the might of Liam Watson inspiring their side to remain in the game, heading into the halftime break trailing by 1 point. This momentum forged on through the third quarter as Beau Coyle and his three goals contributed to CY’s 33-point margin. Sunday was not the day Mazenod would go home wondering as Tim Heuston and Vincent T Arena did what they do best in front of goal, booting 4 and 2 for the respectively.

Trevor Barker Oval played host to the battle between Williamstown and Collegians on Sunday the 21st of August. The Purple Army came out in full force, controlling the momentum of this game from the first bounce, getting out to a 33-point lead.

The UA President Benjamin McWiggan and his committee have led by example this season, ensuring great advocacy, social and support mechanism were available to the umpiring group. The sense of community and family that is displayed after each Wednesday night training is a credit to the culture that has been established in the umpiring group. Umpires look forward to joining their colleagues after training to learn where they will be umpiring that weekend and share a meal with each other. VAFA HQ thanks the Umpires Association for our strong working relationship and partnership to improve all aspects of the umpiring experience in this competition.

Stephen PriviteraVAFA Umpire Operations Manager

The many hours of on field fitness training, recovery sessions and off field video coaching analysis has prepared the umpires to perform at a high level. Each umpire is committed to developing their knowledge and performing on matchday, whether that be on the ground as a field umpire, running as a boundary umpire or in between the big sticks as a goal umpire.

UMPIRES CORNER

I look forward to seeing the outstanding Grand Final performances this weekend and celebrating the contribution of our umpires to this great competition.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 36

The VAFA Umpiring Department and umpiring family is looking forward to this weekend’s Men’s Grand Finals. Our hard working and dedicated umpires have been aspiring to officiate in grand finals since their first day of pre-season training. It will be a great reward and honor for all umpires that have been selected to officiate in the big one – the 2022 William Buck Premier Men’s Grand Final on Sunday at Elsternwick Park. They have been supported throughout the year by their colleagues at training and by the expert coaching panel.

The VAFA Umpires Association (UA) has been a great support to all umpires, especially those who will be officiating on the big stage.
