THAT ONE DAY IN SEPTEMBER After this week, approximately half the teams will have concluded their 2013 season. For the other half there is much expectation as they approach September with optimism. Whilst this always adds extra stress to the match it should be a time for enjoyment and celebrating another great year. Every player, coach, umpire, club official and supporter has contributed to the success of the VAFA and added another layer to the rich history of the VAFA. However, this is only the penultimate round of Premier in a move that will have our Premier Section Grand Final as a stand alone event. Traditionally Premier and Premier B Grand Finals were played on the same weekend and in recent times this has also included Premier C and Division 3. This year will be different. Not only is it standing alone, but the Premier Grand Final will be played on a Saturday for the first time in my 35 year involvement in the VAFA. It is a step that was made to try and highlight the premium event on the VAFA’s calendar.

competition and bring the status of the evening to the status it deserves. This event has the potential to be Victoria’s premier sporting medal night with a focus on the players. Along with the upgraded presentation evening, the VAFA is endeavouring to have more events that will involve the whole competition and ensure there is a bigger and better build-up to our showcase event. With all sections having completed their season there is no reason why all of the competition shouldn’t come to watch our Premier Grand Final. It is curious to me that all the metropolitan and country leagues have far bigger crowds attending their respective grand finals than what we do in the VAFA. It is a well-known fact that we are the largest competition and I don’t think that there would be any group prouder than VAFA supporters, yet we have very little external support to the grand final other than from the participating club’s supporters and the players’ extended family.

Whilst we are always mindful of ensuring all sections are given equal prominence and consideration, it is time for our Premier Section to be highlighted as a stand alone event. The week leading up to the Premier Grand Final will have an increased focus on the build up to our biggest game of the year, as well as allowing us to celebrate the winners of the other 25 premierships in 2013. As part of this build up, the Woodrow Medal and VAFA Awards Night will be held in the River Room at Crown Casino on the Wednesday of that week.

We will be offering discounted prices to all players in the competition through their clubs that will make the day more affordable. We would like to think that all clubs are aspiring to play in higher sections and whilst Premier may not be an achievable section for everyone each year, all VAFA players should come and see how good our players are at this level.

On Woodrow Medal and Awards Night, each of the section’s best and fairest winners will be presented with their medals, while a full count of the Woodrow Medal will be conducted. Hopefully this event can be supported by all the players in the

CUE THE FAT LADY It’s doubtful many Uni Blues supporters will have been to see to any opera this week. A stereotypical ‘fat lady’ on stage might have been on to all but confirm their fate. Had she been at Banksia Reserve last week, then she certainly would have received her cue to warm up. Whilst it ain’t over til it’s over, you’d be a brave person to be so unequivocal about Uni Blues extending their stay in Premier for a 20th straight year. The task is win both their final matches by significant margins and rely on St Bernard’s losing once badly or Beaumaris losing at least once. Collegians whilst still vulnerable have a whopping 26% to play with on any Blues miracle. What makes the challenge even more daunting is that Blues face 2nd placed St Bedes/Mentone Tigers this week and then travel to the difficult Snakepit of St Bernards who may also require a win to be safe. So if the dye is cast on Blues’ relegation then it is another example of the need to for a team in Premier to be the sum of all its parts and not just the top liners. Just like Old Carey, Uni Blues have some of the top notch talent in this section, yet it is the ‘bottom six’ that has meant that quality players like Young, Watts (x2), Summers and the young talent of Eade and Rippon were often left to do too much. The most disappointing thing about a Blues relegation is that again we will have to wait for more University derbies. Blues started well against Beaumaris in what was arguably a relegation rumble. However despite the chances they created Fergus Watts missed a couple of set shots. In the second term Blues were about to line up a set shot at goal when some indiscipline in the middle of the ground saw a free kick paid 100 meters away. The result was a Beaumaris goal. The next 3 minutes were mayhem as the Sharks goaled again and again. Tom Buckley was on the end of many of the goals and didn’t he love every one of them? Buckley would finish with 7, Beauy carried all the momentum into the second half and made a mockery of their ladder position, perhaps highlighting where Blues are. 2

Down the road at Brindisi St, another monumental battle was unfolding. Xavs were not about to let St Bedes/Mentone Tigers enter a finals campaign having beaten them twice in the home and away season. Old Xaverians played their consistent deliberate game whilst the Tigers were playing burst football. The Tigers are one of the most exciting teams to watch when they get going and whilst they threatened at times, they could never get out of third gear. How good is Luke Howard? The 200+ game veteran keeps on delivering in big games. Goss keeps on kicking bags of goals and Handley was plucking grabs at will. Speaking of grabs check out Luke Wintle’s mark early in the 4th quarter! It was a cracker. St Bedes/Mentone wont be too disheartened by this performance, it makes for a fascinating finals series in a few weeks. University Blacks were forced to host St Bernard’s at Sportscover Arena due to the condition of University Oval. Whilst the Blacks missed a chance to return to second spot, they did get a chance to run around on the expanses of the home of this year’s finals. What they weren’t expecting was a fired up St Bernard’s side who came from behind to pinch the game in a thriller in the last. Tom Gleeson (3 goals) was again brilliant in the absence of Merrington and is there a more consistent defender than Tom Caven at present? Batten and Lacey kicked three each for the Blacks but importantly they and the team were held goalless in the last. A great win for the Snowdogs, an important learning experience at Sportscover for Blacks. De La Salle were looking at five straight defeats when they hosted Collegians at Dairy Bell. Luke Semmel has been fantastic this year and Jacob Williams has arguably been the most consistent footballer in the comp. Both produced as De La Salle extended their advantage at every change. Charlie Haley is as an exciting small forward as there is and fourteen individual goal kickers is incredible. It’s hard to know what to make of Collegians this year? So many players used, so many injuries to key men, however they had 11 premiership players in their side Saturday and four others that just missed out last year. Old Scotch could only do themselves damage when they travelled to Bulleen to take on Old Carey. That they came away with a 100 point win and Mark Passador in brilliant form kicking 7 goals was a great result for the Cardinals. What’s more, Old Scotch are still a chance top two. Whether they would want that and a tilt at Xavs is another question. Old Carey’s good players

played well but the Cardinals good players were better. Jamieson had another 30 plus touches and all the visitors needed to really celebrate was a goal to 200 gamer Sam Thompson. Alas it wasn’t to be as the fullback’s move forward in the final quarter was only to net him three behinds. Tipping winners has not been my forte this year. Another abysmal performance of 1 last week. Form has dictated my tipping more than anything else and with that, there doesn’t seem to be any valid reason to change. Therefore Beauy will beat Carey, Xavs should be too good at home for Blacks. The Tigers are a better side than Blues but I do fancy an upset here. Old Scotch should beat Collegians and shut the gate on De La Salle’s faint finals hopes despite the fact that they will be St Bernards.

THE FINAL HURDLE The last round of the season is upon us and the four teams lucky enough to have cemented their place in the top four only need to run with the ‘one week at a time’ cliché once more before they can get down to the real business of finals football. It’s hard to shake the feeling of something special building for those squads, as the anticipation of the unknown builds butterflies in even the most seasoned veteran’s stomach. A four way battle remains for the Premier B leading goal kicker title with one round remaining. Teammates Daniel Anthony (55) and Thomas Mentiplay (52) lead the pack while David Fayman (51) is still a chance to take top spot despite missing six games due to representing Australia in cricket at the Maccabi Games. Travis Ridgway has 49 goals to his name and will have to kick a bag against Old Brighton to give himself a chance to make up ground. In round 17 action, Old Brighton ran rampant over a depleted Werribee Districts side at Brighton Beach Oval by 130 points. Karrayanis was impressive in the demolition with 5 goals, four of them against the wind in the second term, while the ‘Tom-Toms’ - Jakobi, Clarke, Mentiplay and Skewes - were dominant all day. Old Brighton regained second place on the ladder with the win, jumping Old Melburnians into double chance standings. After a fantastic win in Round 16, AJAX suffered an agonising 3 point loss at the hands of Fitzroy at Brunswick St Oval. Despite the Jackas being in a comfortable position headed into the last term, Fitzroy were able to fire and capitalise on their opportunities to come home with a hard fought victory. Poyas and Ludksi racked up the ball in the middle for AJAX in the loss but it wasn’t enough to account for Pickering who caused headaches up forward for Fitzroy with four majors. The loss now eliminates AJAX from the finals race, stuck in fifth position, the Jackas were reliant on St Kevins losing in their clash with Old Melburnians to sneak into fourth spot. 4

Parkdale Vultures almost caused an upset against ladder leader’s Old Trinity at Gerry Green Reserve, going down by 22 points despite leading by 1 point heading into the final quarter. The Vultures who are desperate to remain in Premier B next season led the men in green to the ball for most of the afternoon but in the end couldn’t do enough to fight them off in the last quarter. Old Trinity were again well served by Iezzi and Hamilton who set the standard for a number of late inclusions while Parkdale received valuable contributions from both Welch and Boland in the forward half, who combined for seven goals between them. At Glenhuntly Oval, the Old Haileyburians outpointed Caulfield right across the ground to come away with the four points. The Haileyburians kicked an astonishing 26 behinds in the win, a statistic that kept the Grammarians within striking distance for most of the afternoon. Caulfield got their usual output from Nixon and Shanahan who did their best to stem the flow, but classy performances from both Nicolopolous and Nash saw to it that Old Haileybury would stave off the home side. Caulfield now sits perilously close to the relegation zone and will need to defeat AJAX in the final game of the season to avoid relying on the misfortune of Parkdale and their percentage to remain in Premier B. Premier B’s clash between finalists didn’t disappoint, with St Kevins coming away with a one goal victory over the Old Melburnians at TH King Oval. Blustery conditions made for an interesting contest between the sides, with neither hesitating to throw numbers behind the ball against the breeze. St Kevin’s held off a late last quarter barrage from Old Melburnians, with both teams giving it all with plenty to play for. Brick wore OM’s skipper Paule like a glove all day to limit his usual output while Nash led brilliantly in defence. Both De Steiger and Seccull continued their great form for Old Melburnians in the loss, leaving nothing out on the ground. PIRATES PRIDE AS PENINSULA CONSOLIDATE Momentum is just as powerful for a club in a match as it is over the long term – once you have it, the key is to maintain it. At Peninsula Old Boys, 2013 has been a milestone, playing in Premier C for the first time in the club’s 30-year history, but their momentum would be lost if they didn’t consolidate their 2012 promotion. On a proud day for the Pirates, who celebrated club legend Shaun Payze’s 300th game, they did just that, defeating Banyule by 6 goals. The Bears are again in 9th spot with only one round left after Old Camberwell defeated hapless NOBS-St Pats by 75 points. At the top end of the ladder Marcellin were the big winners, jumping from 4th to 2nd after a hard fought win over Old Ivanhoe and a heavy defeat by Monash Blues at the hands of Mazenod.

Mazenod looked to give their loyal supporters a big send off for their last home game of 2013 against Monash Blues. Jace Kelly, Johnson and Inglis were in great touch from the start as the hosts bolted out of the blocks to lead the Ashes 5.6 to 0.1 at the first break. Smyth, Davidson and Hatch helped stem the Nodders momentum to win the second quarter for the Ashes but they still trailed by 4 goals at the long break. Mazenod then wrestled back the ascendancy, although inaccurate kicking saved the Ashes blushes as the Nodders kicked 4.14 to 3.3 in the second half to extend their winning margin to a healthy 43 points. Since winning their first 8, the Blues have lost 5 of their last 9 to drop to 4th while Mazenod’s winning streak now stands at 16.

While their fate has been sealed for 2013, the mood was buoyant at the NOBS-St Pats Presidents Day lunch where nearly 100 past players, supporters, officials and life members gathered before their game against Old Camberwell. Fourth gamers Tom Schipper and Harry Crothers sparked the Wellers into action, but their side’s inaccurate kicking kept the Nobbers in it at halftime. The home side suffered a harsh blow with three game-ending injuries and they eventually told, as Hillier, Allright and Hart combined for 13 goals to register a vital percentage-boosting 75-point victory for the Wellers, who now sit 5% above 9th placed Banyule.

Peninsula’s clash with Banyule at Mt Eliza was billed as one of the Pirates’ biggest in their history with a chance to seal Premier C football for 2014 on offer. Stefan Barbour struck first for the home side but the Bears got a couple of their own to trail narrowly at quarter time. The second term was almost a repeat of the first as the Pirates missed opportunities while the determination from Bears such as Langford and Truefeldt saw the visitors go into half time level with the hosts. The ferocity increased in the third and the lead changed 7 times before the Pirates edged to a slender 10-point advantage at ¾ time. Peninsula’s game then clicked into gear as forward Jeremy Gleeson benefited from great work of Grigg, Whitty and Sansom in midfield to see the home side prevail by 34 points. Having led the Pirates into Premier C, Brett McIlwraith is passing the baton on, announcing that this would be his last season at the helm after the game.

Marcellin was out to grab the double chance against Old Ivanhoe in front of a healthy crowd at Pine Lodge. While both sides are known for potent attacks, defence was the order of the day as the half-back lines for both sides dominated the contest. The hard work of Blanch, Symes and Carlson helped the Eagles edge to an early lead but Dean Heta took several contested marks to keep the Hoers in the contest at half time. James Moio got a quick goal to snatch a lead for the hosts in the third, but Marcellin kicked the next 4 majors to open up a handy buffer. The visitors lost two rotations early in the last but Old Ivanhoe couldn’t capitalize as their forwards were well beaten by the Marcellin defence. Matt Gasparini kicked the sealer before two late goals trimmed the margin to a respectable 18 points. 6

All of the VAFA community was saddened to hear about Therry Penola’s Ricky Bannister and his tragic accident earlier this year when he fell from a horse to break is C5 vertebrae that has left him quadriplegic. VERY LONG LUNCH The VAFA is very proud of its association with One in Five. As our official charity partner the VAFA support One In Five’s work to raise funds to assist in the treatment and study into mental illness. Two Saturday’s ago One In Five held their biggest fundraiser of the year, their ‘Very long Lunch’ at Hawthorn’s Leonda. The VAFA were invited as guests of One In Five and with close to 500 people in the room and with some aggressive bidding on the many Auction items, the day was a huge success. Look out for the story about the lunch in this week’s edition of VAFA TV. 10

In the past month over 150 VAFA footballers have been luck enough to get an inner sanctum tour of Collingwood’s Westpac Centre by Dane Swan. Swan is one of the spokespeople for the Be a Wingman campaign and he spoke for about half an hour to each group about anything and everything including his own personal experiences from his past where he could have chosen to be a wingman rather than get involved in a scuffle in Federation Square that saw his name 12

Old Camberwell’s favourite son JORDAN HEFFERNAN first played for the Wellers in 1996 whilst still at school. He played his first Senior game in 1997 and in 1998, won the U19 Best and Fairest. He won the Seniors B&F in 1999, runners up in 2000 and is a dual premiership player (2001 + 2007). In 2012 he broke the club record for most amount of games (280). He has been a member of the committee for years and a valuable member of the on-field leadership group. A highly respected member of the club and a stalwart on the field.

When Joey first started playing in 1998 he struggled to even kick a footy, however, due to his hard work and commitment, he has made himself into one of the more reliable players at the club for such long time, across both the seniors and reserves side. If a hardball is to be won, Joey will be the first person to put his body on the line in and under the packs. There is no player more determined to win the footy or beat his opponent. If he gets knocked down he bounces straight back up and onto the next contest. No player at the club over his time has worn his heart on his sleeve more than Joey, always giving 100% commitment to the Cobras every time he puts on the jumper and steps onto the field. He probably holds the record at the club for most coaches awards, most likely because of the wonderful example he sets for his younger team mates with his commitment, leadership, and determination. Over the years he has had a number of accomplishments including, captaining the reserves, many years in reserves leadership group, and top 3 in the reserves B& F on multiple occasions. He has also been a regular member of the senior side for many years. Joey has been a wonderful servant of the club helping out in many areas. However, probably his most memorable off field role is as the official torch lighter that kicks off the Cobras most traditional event “the Gift”, which occurs after the last game of every year.

De La Salle’s TOM MOLONEY is one of the clubs most popular, durable and respected players. Tom was Reserves Most Consistent in 2003, Senior Most Consistent in 2009 and 2010, runner up in the Senior Best and Fairest in 2011 and VAFA senior representative in 2010. As a key defender, Tom has always given away height and weight to position forwards but is rarely beaten. Tom has once again been amongst the teams most consistent performers in 2013.

Hawthorn’s PHIL AVERY is one of the extraordinary Hawk success stories, Phil is probably the equal oldest player in D4 VAFA, yet is still the most amazingly gifted and attacking back man who can read the play exceptionally well and tends to take more marks than his direct opponent and run off them repeatedly like a teenager, turning defence into attack. Only the third modern day Hawks player to reach the 200 game milestone and is a very popular player with Hawk supporters

Old Camberwell’s ROHAN KAPOOR first played for the club in 1999 and captained his side to a U19 premiership, whilst also winning the VAFA Section B&F. In 2000 he started playing Seniors. Rohan moved to Perth in 2006 but returned to the club in 2010, winning the Senior’s B&F in 2012 and runners up in 2011. A fierce competitor on the field, Roh is an integral member of the Senior’s backline but has been known to sneak a few goals up forward from time to time. Off the field, he was a finalist in the Men’s Health man of the year competition and made the cover of August 2010.

MHSOBFC’s MATTHEW HAMILTON-HO diligence with his preparation, aggressive with his play and often freakish with his skill, he is universally respected and admired. One of the most talented and versatile players at the club, the ‘Chief’ has often proved to be a match winner at either end of the ground. Whilst his contributions to the 2010 and 2012 Reserves flags should never be understated, Jack’s contributions to the Blacks social scene are legendary.

Hawthorn’s PAUL NUNAN is a tall attacking defender who strolled into training as a local lad looking for a kick. Very athletic, he plays an attacking back man’s game always looking to move the ball on quickly to give the forwards a great chance of out marking their opponent. In his 9th Hawks season, his teammates are glad his fashion sense has gradually improved in recent years.

SKOB’s LIAM DUNNE started his SKOB career whilst still a student playing 2 games in 2006, he went on to play two more great seasons in the unders winning the 2008 B&F and also getting his first senior games during the year. Liam’s team first attitude was rewarded with the reserves coaches award in 2009 and he had a brilliant 2012 winning the runners up award in the reserves B&F, an amazing effort considering he played over half the season in the seniors.

Richmond Central’s TRENT WOODBERRY has quickly established himself as a quality full back who could spend time in the ruck. Strong in the contest, excellent in heavy traffic and a thumping left-foot kick, his efforts made him Club Champion in 2010, and he is a key component in this season’s push for the finals. Trent’s teammate, Robert Wood is the first member of our Club XVIII side to reach this milestone. Always dependable in the back half of the ground and a great team man.

TWO BLUES WON’T DIE WONDERING Two weeks ago Prahran Assumption looked set on finishing fifth with finals beyond them, fast forward a fortnight and that underdog status has shifted to odds on favourite. The Two Blues’ upset of the in-form Ormond last week, along with top four competitor Whitefriars losing to Williamstown CYMS, ties the two on 40 points apiece. Whitefriars’ 13% advantage may reap no reward as they require a win at Hampton Rovers to consolidate their finals position, while Prahran Assumption travel to Old Geelong, opening a window for the Two Blues to steal fourth spot in the last game of the season. Prahran Assumption were at the crossroads before their Ormond match-up, win and keep top four hopes alive, lose and miss the finals, and they answered in emphatic style. Throughout the first 3 quarters the margin never exceeded two goals, with any advantage quickly shut down by the other team. To this point the Two Blues had wasted opportunities with seven more scoring shots. Facing a three-point deficit at three quarter time, Prahran Assumption rallied to kick three goals in the last quarter and held fourth-quarter experts, the Monders’ to 1.1 for the term to win by 13. Adam Sleight’s four goals and Liam Hunt’s best on ground performance helped Prahran Assumption end Ormond’s six game win-streak and draw ever closer to a top four spot. Whitefriars were not as fortunate as their finals rivals, Williamstown CYMS won back second on the ladder. Williamstown created the an advantage early in the first, kicking five goals to three as they had complete control of play with the wind. The Friars responded with authority in the second and made it count on the scoreboard, with the breeze at their backs they kicked five unanswered goals for the term and took a 15-point lead at halftime. The CY’s closed the gap by three quarter time to just the solidary point before blowing Whitefriars away in the last with six goals to end the game 15-point victors. Josh Vanderloo’s bag of nine and Zachary Read’s four displayed the class and attacking nature of Williamstown CYMS, finals competitors take note. 16

Hampton Rovers finals guarantee was sealed and delivered months ago, but recent blunders put a mark on an almost perfect record. The Rovers still managed to defeat MHSOB, although their killer instinct remains marginally adrift, as they endeavour to ripen for the finals. The Rovers had the ascendancy early with a five goals to one first quarter, MHSOB strung multiple goals together in the second term, but the Rovers still managed three of their own and a halftime lead of 20-points. They stepped up a gear after the long break with seven goals for the quarter, thus ending the contest. Previously, the Rovers would continue to ramp on the pressure and convincingly beat their opponents, nonetheless MHSOB won the quarter but lost the match by 36-points. Jesse Lovig was best on ground for the Rovers. Old Geelong’s late season revival will be unrewarded come seasons end, but it’s always better to end on a high note as they continued their rich vein of form against Bulleen Templestowe. The first half was all the OG’s, kicking 10 goals and a lead of 27 before the main break as Old Geelong were seemingly home and hosed. The Bullants ended any early celebrations after halftime with six goals for the term to find themselves down by 4-points with one quarter to play. The OG’s regained momentum after the third quarter scare to run away 17.9-111 to 14.9-93 victors. Tristan Mountjoy was deemed BOG for his six goals and dominance in the forward 50. Old Mentonians secured their place in Division 1 for 2014 with a 99-point win over Glen Eira. The Saints look more than likely to end the season winless. Glen Eira’s mad Monday couldn’t come sooner as they were put to the sword in the first term. Lucky for them OMFC had pot shots from everywhere in the second and that inaccuracy resulted in one goal for the term. The Panthers returned to unselfish football in the third and fourth quarters, with Ben Robertson (8) and Luke Hull (6) sharing the dividends. LOCKED AND LOADED It has taken 17 rounds but the top four is locked in. Therry Penola, Yarra Valley, Old Eltham and St Mary’s Salesian will fight it out for the Division 2 flag and all four can lay claim to being a legitimate contender. Therry Penola deserve top billing, but after falling to Yarra Valley on the weekend the Lions still have some work to do. The Bushrangers are flying at the right time of the year and could be looking at a second flag in as many years. St Mary’s Salesian cemented their finals’ spot with an encouraging win over Old Eltham and with it, quelled thoughts that their form isn’t as good away from Ferndale Park. The two sides will now face each other in week one of the finals, in what is now a flip of the coin game. St Mary’s face another massive test this week against Yarra Valley at home, who after last week’s win are the yardstick of Division 2. Old Eltham face the sporadic St Johns away and will want to use the game as a tune up for future weeks. The Turtles’ form has been up and down this year and won’t want to limp into the finals. The JOCs will want to finish their 2013 on a high and finish with 10 wins for the year which is marked improvement on a solitary win in 2012. Therry Penola has the chance to prove that last week’s loss to Yarra Valley was just a blip on the radar when they face Ivanhoe at home. The Lions’ form this year has been outstanding and their ace/aces in the hole will be the two best key forwards in Division 2. The Bannisters could prove their full worth in the next month and help deliver Therry Penola the ultimate glory.

Ivanhoe are in a precarious situation. Even after knocking over Monash last week, they are still face the possibility of being relegated. It will be an inspired effort to jump the hurdle that is Therry Penola at home. A win would require their best effort for the year, but a “nothing to lose” mentality is needed to dodge the relegation bullet. The bottom two sides on the ladder face off this week in a game that Monash must win and earn enough percent to leap-frog Ivanhoe to avoid relegation. After such hype over the pre-season with the recruitment of Russell Robertson, the Gryphons’ season has been a disappointment. For Emmaus St Leos this game presents a chance to end 2013 on a positive note and put this season behind them. After one miserly win for the year and plenty of disappointing losses, including two after the siren and an agonising draw, this has been a very disappointing year. Bragging rights are on offer in the match between South Melbourne and Old Paradians. They sit 6th and 7th on the ladder respectively with only two points separating them. It has been an interesting year for both sides, their form has hit peaks and troughs and they will be better for the run in 2014. For South Melbourne they will want to also put behind them their agonising loss to St Johns last week, in a game the JOCs had no right to win. A SQUAD TEEMING WITH TALENT So this is it. The final round of the regular season is upon us and September is just around the corner. La Trobe require divine intervention to gain sixth spot so it is very likely that the current top 6 will enter the Colosseum to fight to their figurative football deaths or more politely put, footballing hibernations. The season has been filled with upsets, bags of goals, hot pies, cold beers, long road trips and exhilarating football contests. It is the closest season in Division 3 in a long time with little separating the top 4, let alone the top 6. With that being said, my team of the year accompanies this write up. I am sure there are many apologies to make for near misses and errant selections but I must say that the side looks pretty delicious on paper. In saying this, Ricky Costanzo, Tim Allman, Tom O’Halloran, Richard Lugg, Ben Price, Sam Demeo and Dave Burnside are among the many players who can count themselves very unlucky. Thanks to all the teams who submitted nominations and for all the players and officials who have made both playing and writing in the division so enjoyable. Aquinas started the afternoon of games with a comprehensive smashing of relegation bound South Mornington sending a message to the rest of the competition. Aquinas, who look set to play Kew in the first of the finals for the second consecutive year, has made a fantastic turnaround to a season which looked dead in the water at the halfway point of the season. Andrew La Marca kicked 5 for the victors with 4 each to Phil Jurkovsky and Zac Parr. Kyle Debernardi kicked 3 for the Tigers who face Kew in their final game for the year. UHS-VU did enough to secure the points against Swinburne, led again by the outstanding backline which includes both Asher Kirk (CHB in the team of the year) and Ben Atherton (Back Pocket). The big frames of Ben Higgins and Richard Gates kept Swinburne in it, but the class of the quality UHSVU unit has been enough to steer them to a 2nd place finish and there is great belief that they can take it all the way this season. Now I don’t usually talk myself up but I did tip Richmond Central to cause a boil over and knock 20

off the highly fancied Elsternwick. Okay, let’s not analyse my self-absorbed behaviour and focus on the performance by the Snakes. Their desperation throughout the contest is a hallmark of their game and is a good reason not to write them off come September. Jason ‘Shooter’ Sutas kept Aaron Thornton to 2 goals and Woody Bucci turned around his errant kicking from the week before with 6 snags. Andrew Oldfield continued his fine season for Elsternwick and will be hugely important over the next month. Albert Park put a huge dent in the finals aspirations of La Trobe with an 11 point win at home. La Trobe desperately needed to win the game with a tougher draw than Aquinas but not even 5 from Jack McMeel could get them over the line. La Trobe trailed all day and clearly struggled in the biting wind and were exposed by the ferocity of Adrian Snowden and Hayden Turner. Rupert Sangster was again excellent for La Trobe but unfortunately for the Uni lads they may be joining Swinburne at a few uni pub nights next week. The convincing nature of Power House’s win over St Francis Xavier appears to be a little more than a mere aberration in a bitterly disappointing display on the eve of SFX’s return to the finals. Chris Smith kicked 5 and Dimma feasted yet again however an inspired performance by Ricky Webb kept Power House in control throughout. Webb kicked 4 as his brother Michael paraded around in front of a confounded SFX unit. Power House has plenty to be pleased about and may emerge as a finals contender next season. On the back of a visit from VAFA TV, Kew wanted to continue making a good impression on the football world and kept up their strong run with a 94 point thrashing of Old Westbourne. The umpires managed to maintain control of a game that appeared to be quickly dissolving into a glorified cage match. Brazzale kicked 5 and Fultheim snagged 3 for Kew whilst Darcy Spencer gathered plenty of ball on the wing. FIVE TO SAY GOODBYE North Brunswick ran into some hot form before the finals with an 83 point win over Mt Lilydale. After a relatively close first half, the Bulls ramped up the pressure with an 11 goal to one second half. ‘Jumping’ Jimmy Davis was the best player on the ground in a swingman role, Gallagher yet again notched up a bag of six while Jason ‘Big Red’ Harkins and Davor ‘Mailman’ Lucevic were terrific down back. For Mt Lilydale who sit in ninth place with one round to go, Brendan Byrne was easily their best player. Chadstone ended their disappointing season with a 131 point loss to the Bulldogs at home, a sad note to a sorry season. After a slow start to the game, Point Cook clicked into gear and piled on the pressure to a Chadstone team lacking skill and class. Herbertson (5 goals) and Hegarty (4) combined for nine goals up forward, Andrew Auciello was good in midfield chipping in with two goals. For Chadstone who end the year winless, Tom Lines, Cisco George and Sean Sceney were again very good, and probably should be leading the best and fairest count. For the Dogs, a tough finals campaign awaits. The Dragons torrid second half of the season continued with a six point loss to Manningham at home. Manningham got off to a flyer and led by 22 points at quarter-time, which was critical away from home. The Dragons pegged them back gradually, but the Cobras still led by 15 points at three quarter time. In a frantic final term that was a defensive deadlock, the Dragons outscored the Cobras two goals to one but still fell short of a win. Scott McPherson was the Cobras best player, while James Kerse was excellent for the Dragons. A strong pre-season and a few new recruits could mean the difference for both sides come season 2014. One of the games of the season saw the Hawks yet again fight off a challenger, with the Blues this time succumbing to the Hawks class. The Blues led the Hawks through the first half, but a three goal to none third quarter by the Hawks saw

them regain ascendancy and they were never really troubled from then on. Hawthorn ended up two goal winners, but the Blues will not be discouraged by the performances they have put in over recent weeks, knowing they can trouble just about anyone come finals time. Piccolo (4 goals), Brown (3) and Rossoukas combined for 10 goals for the Hawks, while Pritchard and Davies were excellent across the ground. For the Blues, Scott booted three up forward while Carlucci and Edwards were solid contributors in the middle. Special mention to milestone players from the Hawks, Alex McPhie 50 games, Josh Lee 50, games, Paul Nunan 150 games, Jason Jackomos 150 games and Phil Avery 200 games, all were able to celebrate their milestone with a win. Eley Park piled on a massive 34 goals to demoralise Box Hill North by 169 points at Whitehorse Reserve. The Sharks booted ten goals to zero in the first quarter and never took their foot of the pedal, powering on in a ruthless fashion that will be dangerous in finals. Eley Park maintained a high intensity all game, with a dominant midfield allowing Baehson (9 goals) and Perkins (6) to get on the end of some top notch delivery. Lindsay, McCabe and Brown were also very good in a team that now has solid contributors in every position. For Box Hill North, goalkicking dynamo Daniel Penny was held well by the Sharks defence, meaning the Demons struggled to find other avenues to goal and were choked up by they Eley Park team defence. Congratulations to those that made the team of the year. It is always a challenging task.
