THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME A great start to the finals last weekend and already four teams are celebrating their promotion to a higher section. Congratulations to Old Brighton who return to the Premier Section after 3 years. Mazenod and Hampton Rovers are into Premier B & C respectively whilst Yarra Valley will be playing at their highest level, Division 1, since joining the VAFA in 1993. After this weekend they will be joined by another 8 teams who will experience the same thrill. Two preliminary finals in each of Divisions 3 and 4 add a new dimension to the finals series. VAFA finals are a great time for those who follow all of the sections not just those where they are competing. Last weekend the VAFA introduced home finals in the Under 18 and 19 competitions (except U19 Premier), and from all reports each game was a success. The AFL were keeping an eye on the matches, as they have followed suit and allowed Geelong to play a home final this weekend against Fremantle. With all of the sections excluding Premier now playing their semi finals in August should we consider playing all of these at home grounds? Finals revenue for the VAFA is a vitally important part of the year’s budget however if a club has the ability to close off its ground and charge, should they be given the opportunity to host a home final? The VAFA only charge for finals and representative football and whilst this is difficult to stomach for some, it should be more palatable considering that most other suburban and country leagues not only charge each week, but charge the players entry to the ground as well. If we were to offer home finals in the first week, the VAFA would still manage the match and organise the gate keepers but the higher placed club would get the benefit of having home ground advantage. Added to that I am sure they would get a larger crowd without the need to travel and the added financial

benefit of opening the canteen and after match bar. Most of our finals lose the intimacy of a VAFA home and away round. For some, the best part of the VAFA day is experiencing the camaraderie with the opposition. This includes a pre match lunch and other social activities that are not available when playing at independent grounds. The amateur experience is lost and the focus is solely centred on the match. At some of the grounds there is not even an after match where the players and supporters get together. This is what makes the whole package of the amateur football day so appealing. Traditionally all VAFA finals have been played on independent grounds. This was much easier to organise when most suburban grounds were fenced, however most fencing has been taken down to make grounds more accessible to the public. Most of the superior fenced grounds are used for the VFL, TAC Cup and by local leagues who generally get supported by their councils ahead of the VAFA. VAFA grounds that were fenced that no longer are include North Old Boys (Brunswick), Old Scotch (Camberwell), Oakleigh and Caulfield. Few remain and we have to go far and wide to find venues that are suitable to host our games. One venue introduced this year is Casey. This is a new ground with outstanding amenities for players and spectators when they get there, however the drive to Cranbourne is less desirable for some clubs. It is rare that we get two senior teams, let alone the reserves and thirds, all situated in the outer southeast. The same can be said for Craigieburn, which will suit some of the teams but not all. The notion of having home finals at grounds where clubs could secure their ground could add a new dimension to our finals series.

GETTING A KICK OUT OF THE SEASON Firstly thank you to those that didn’t let me know the errors I made with my selections in this year’s team of the year. With finals taking place all around Melbourne and little that could change in the positions of teams in Premier Section there was an air of anticlimax in the lead up to last week’s games. However when we looked at the live scores there was potential change taking place. Beaumaris were beating St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, and Old Scotch were on top of Uni Blacks. Could the Cardinals be teeing up a double chance and a crack at Old Xavs in the finals? Alas it wasn’t to be and there was no change to the premiership table in the places that matter. We can officially bid farewell to University Blues and Old Carey and will no doubt keep an eye out for their progress next year. For much of the match at University Oval, Old Scotch made Uni Blacks look slow. The Cardinals were first to the ball, played with more urgency and seemingly saw this match as more than just a warm up for next week. The fact that these two will meet again on Sunday added extra intrigue to the contest. How much of your hand do you show? Do you rest players? Do you try things? One examples was that it looked like that Matt Kempton had sent Charlie Richardson to Nick Jamieson in more of a tagging role than a head to head stoush. Not that it had much effect. Blacks didn’t kick a goal until the second quarter and Scotch were always in control. It’s difficult to read into too much of this game. If anything the most notable thing about this was Blacks failure to kick a score. De La Salle and Old Carey were playing for pride. Whilst Old Carey have battled this season De La had their own relative down periods where injuries and unavailability’s have taken their toll. It was Greg McLoughlin’s last game in charge at De La and his players fired up for a seven goal opening quarter. Dunshea Oval was bathed in sunshine and put many of this winter’s mud fests far from memory. With a 39 point quarter time advantage Old Carey were heading towards a fourth straight 100 point loss. However inspired by a group of Panther Legends (fresh from their Old Carey Legends match earlier that day) Old 2

Carey showed real determination and spirit that had been lacking in recent weeks. Sam Haslem had another great game and Charlie Haley continued to shine up forward with four goal. Michael Rainey bagged five goals for the home side as they went down to Premier B with their heads held high. Smarting from his omission from the Premier team of the year, Matt Handley kicked another five goals to rub salt into wound of my exclusion. Handley has been superb this year and is certainly deserving of a spot in the team. Brendan Goss rubber stamped his leading goal kicking efforts with five goals of his own as Old Xaverians completed the double over Collegians at the Harry Trott. Collegians looked weary and have certainly been wounded in 2013. They have clung on to a place in the section, falling from 1st to 8th in 12 months. A host of players got senior experience this year – the question will be can they rebuild to continue this era of lofty finishes? Old Xaverians had some handy inclusions in John Shaw and the previously mentioned Handley back for an important hit out before a more significant second semi this week. Uni Blues needed a miracle and they got one, albeit not one to keep them in Premier, but in the form of Aaron Harris who kicked a wobbly goal after the siren to secure a draw at the Snakepit against St Bernards. It was a bitter sweet end to the Students time in Premier as whilst a come from behind draw kind of feels like a win, the reality is there for all to see. Harris is a Kiwi with limited past playing experience, but did a manful job in the ruck all day. If Handley was rubbing the salt then Peter Summers was wrenching the wound open as he reminded everyone of his talents through midfield. For St Bernard’s a tumultuous year comes to an end. Gleeson (3 goals) has been a find and if Merrington (3 also), plus others, could have been on the park more then who knows where they might have gone. St Bedes/Mentone Tigers looked like dropping both games against Beaumaris for significant parts of this game however their ability to pile on quick goals was again on display in the final term as they ran out comfortable winners in the end. Beaumaris will be wrapped to survive their first season at this level and finishing 6th is no mean feat. Edmonds kicked 4 and Buckley 3 for the Sharks whilst Terrell and Mangoni had the same for the Tigers. The only disappointing thing about the end of this game was that the Tiger players couldn’t party on quite as hard with their neighbours in the after match – they have a final to play this week. Of the teams that leave us now, thank you good luck in the off season, here is my best guess at their Best and Fairest winners: De La Salle (5th) Jake Williams; Beaumaris (6th) – Tom Dean; St

Bernards (7th) – Adam Bentick; Collegians (8th) – Will Tardiff; Uni Blues (9th) – Ross Young; Old Carey (10th) – Lach McQueen-Miscamble. This weekend it’s finally finals for Premier. Old Xaverians and St Bedes/Mentone will be fascinating as these two are yet to meet on a big ground? Both have played good football on the larger grounds when given the chance and both sides like it in close. The feeling is a small ground favours the Tigers but they have move the ball with devastating effect this year. Xavs probably should win. For the casual observer the flag is theirs to lose. Old Scotch are building beautifully. Last week’s match will hold no bearing on this week, but given the slide of the Blacks, 3-1-5 in the back nine, it’s hard to see them winning this one. The Cardinals have the firepower, the run and edge in Sundays 1st semi.

TAKING YOUR CHANCE If a love for sport doesn’t pulsate through your veins then stay well clear of Melbourne in September, this it a city where a federal election plays second fiddle on the front page of the newspapers to the weekend’s big games and the weekday’s off field scandals. Whether it is the AFL or NRL finals series, the Sandown 500 or the beginning of the Spring Carnival there is always an event around to feed the appetites of all sports fanatics in Melbourne’s favourite month. Wedged between the headlines and bright lights of the big stage are the VAFA finals that commenced in earnest last weekend. Passionate supporters flock to the grounds drenched in team colours, hoping desperately to witness history being made by their local club before jumping on the train and heading to the G to watch their AFL team replicate those heroics. Old Brighton moved one step closer to that goal last weekend, securing a spot on grand final day and a place in Premier Section next season with a fantastic 39 point win over Old Trinity at Sportscover Arena. Brighton used a hot start to propel themselves to the win, holding the opposition to just four first half goals. Trinity fought hard in the third term to work their way back into the contest, but wayward kicking ensured Brighton had enough of a lead to hold on in the final quarter. Skewes was pivotal for Brighton, working tirelessly in the ruck to starve Trinity’s onballers from clean disposal around the stoppages. His superior ruckwork and communication with his midfield brigade helped Bruin nullify the influence of Trinity’s midfielders from having their usual impact on the game. Trinity had trouble reducing Karayannis’ impact, kicking four goals in the second term through a combination of fantastic pressure and crumbing skills. Brighton’s defenders – in particular North - were also influential in the contest, finding a nice balance of attack and defence to rebound the ball effectively into their forward half. Trinity received gallant performances from Team of the year inductees Wildsmith and Hamilton who worked hard all day, but will have a lot to work on if they want to take their revenge on 4

Brighton in the Grand Final. In the elimination final, St Kevin’s had their season prematurely ended by a fired up Old Melburnian’s squad to the tune of four goals. Nixon showed plenty of courage to inspire his OM’s teammates in the clash, returning from being knocked out in the first quarter to kick a goal in a seven goal onslaught in the third term. Poor discipline cost SKOBs; giving away two cheap goals in the third with a 25m penalty and a late hit that helped the Melburnian’s develop an insurmountable lead and momentum heading into the last. Borthwick was able to make his presence felt at the contests for Melburnians, despite having to shark off the dominant work of Lynch in the ruck, who was one of St. Kevins best on the day. Paule showed great leadership from half back to counter the fast ball movement of St Kevins, who were wasteful when going inside 50. Both Simpson and Shanahan can hold their heads high for the losing side, providing run and carry all day, especially against strong breezes in the first and third terms. St Kevins will rue missed opportunities in the offseason kicking 7.16 on the day, six less scoring shots than their winning opposition.

PRELIMINARY FINAL PREVIEW: Both sides will be hungry to take their place in the Grand Final next weekend with a win in the preliminary final at Coburg City Oval on Sunday. The two sides split their contests during the season; with Old Trinity smashing the Melburnians to the tune of 98 points in the opening round of the year and Melburnians taking the four points in an extremely low scoring contest in the wet round 13. The teams both have the added motivation of wanting a return to the VAFA’s top flight after being relegated in season 2011 and 2012 respectively. Trinity, who finished one game clear in top position, will need to return to their regular season dominance to ensure victory while the Melburnians will be happy to spoil the party and take the minor premiers down in straight sets. This game will be won and lost in the midfield battle, where both teams will be hoping to control the tempo of the game with and against the breeze at the blustery Coburg City Oval. The big ground should test the mettle of the mids THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2013

and prove who wants to work harder and gut run when the game is on the line. Iezzi will be a force to be reckoned with for the men in green after a quiet performance in the semi final and the Melburnians will look to throw several bodies at him in an attempt to curb his work at the stoppages. LOCAL RIVALS IN BIG PRELIM BATTLE With a home and away season spent toiling through the slog of a Melbourne winter over, those left to contest the Premier C premiership were treated to wonderful spring conditions that remind us that its finals time. In the 2nd Semi Mazenod brought their ‘A-game’, outplaying Marcellin from quarter time to sew up a deserved spot in the Grand Final. On Sunday Old Ivanhoe defeated a brave Monash Blues by 13 points to set up an enticing local derby Preliminary final against the Eagles.

2ND SEMI FINAL REVIEW Casey Fields looked resplendent as Mazenod and Marcellin battled it out for a spot in the Grand Final and promotion to Premier B. Kicking with a moderate northerly wind, Marcellin had the ascendancy in the opening quarter, resisting a mini Mazenod fight back before kicking two late majors to lead by a 13 points at the first break. Both sides appeared nervous with turnovers aplenty and with the Eagles sensing an upset, Mazenod Coach Adrian Connolly implored his charges to relax and settle into the game. From that point on, Mazenod produced their most commanding football of the year, piling on 14 unanswered goals from quarter time until 20 minutes into the 3rd quarter as they smashed the hapless Eagles all over the ground. Rob Mann was influential, Dave Chamberlain, Josh Cowan and Ben Phibbs took control in midfield while up forward Rees Thomas worked hard and Heath Black showed his class with 6 majors alongside 5 from fellow small forward Nick Jook. Mazenod’s reliable defence was also dominant in this period as they turned defence into attack time and again, helping their side to a 55 point lead at the last change. Eagles Coach Greg Fremantle wanted to see his side’s ‘spark’ back in the last quarter as the Eagles looked to salvage some pride. Their leaders such as Jarrod Carlson, Pete Augustin and Jake Symes stood up well in adversity, but Mazenod were upand-about and went on to post a hat-trick of seven goal quarters, eventually saluting by a massive 89 points. After the final siren the Nodders players gathered on field to recognise a job well done, 6

albeit not completely, while their supporters celebrated in acknowledgement of their side’s promotion to Premier B for the first time since 2006. The Eagles left the field vanquished and in need of a quick rebound if they’re to win a do-ordie clash with Old Ivanhoe in the Preliminary Final.

1ST SEMI FINAL REVIEW The northerly wind was much stronger for the ‘elimination’ semi-final between Old Ivanhoe and Monash Blues, which influenced the game plan for both sides. Old Ivanhoe got first use of the breeze but made a slow start as the Ashes’ Sam Walsh slotted the first goal before the Hoers registered their first after 20 minutes. Despite facing a 10 point quarter time deficit, Monash Blues’ large and loud group of supporters knew they’d had a great opening term, giving them a chance of blowing the game open in the second. Hoers Coach Travis Ronaldson put spare men in defence and urged his players to win the contested ball starve the Monash Blues of opportunity. His players heeded the call, as both sides forced stoppage after stoppage in a dour, intight arm wrestle. Monash Blues had the better of play but poor disposal going forward threatened to undo that work as Adrian Del Monte set up a Stuart Low goal for the Hoers before two late Ashes goals drew scores level at the long break. The third term was played almost exclusively at one end as Old Ivanhoe suffocated the life out of the Ashes running game. Despite dominating possession, the wasteful Hoers found it difficult to establish a match winning lead until a 55m bomb from Chris Johnson was followed quickly by another in time on time to extend the lead to 31 points as the Ashes were kept scoreless. Ashes coach Hayden Stanton sensed his side drop off in the last 10 minutes of the 3rd and roused his troops to earn respect back in the last. Andrew Hickey looked to lift the Ashes, but they were again frustrated by wayward possession, kicking 5 behinds before registering their first goal of the second half 22 minutes into the final PREMIER C — TIPS IN BOLD (YEARS TOTAL 66 / 73%) Marcellin v Old Ivanhoe

term. Ryan Smith added another but by then it was too late and the Ashes fairytale run came to an end in defeat by 13 points. Having won a tough battle, the Hoers had little time to celebrate as a preliminary final date with Marcellin loomed large.

PRELIMINARY FINAL PREVIEW At the final break and with the 2nd semi final all but lost, Greg Fremantle encouraged Marcellin to not be beaten mentally by the unfolding result against Mazenod. Clearly this Preliminary Final will be a test of character for the Eagles who need to pick up the pieces after last week’s mauling, and they may have to do so without handy forward Matthew Gasparini, who suffered an ankle injury. They could do worse than to look to their bright start last week where their work rate and intensity forced Mazenod into some uncharacteristic turnovers.

Old Ivanhoe’s victory over Monash Blues wasn’t pretty but their ability to absorb pressure and grind in adverse conditions got them over the line. They’ll need to summon those qualities once more if the last meeting between these sides is any indication, as Marcellin beat Old Ivanhoe in a tight, low scoring affair at Pine Lodge. Nick Butler and Chris Johnson were missing from the lineup that day, and their inclusion could be the added factor required to give Old Ivanhoe a big win to bounce straight back to Premier B. These clubs have a fierce rivalry and with the ledger from both 2013 matches at 1-1 tipping the winner is a coin toss. The outcome should be up in the air until very late but I’m going with Old Ivanhoe narrowly as they carry greater momentum into this clash.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

TAKING THE TEST

GATEKEEPERS JUST DOING THEIR JOB It was disappointing to hear that some of our gate attendants were harassed last week whilst manning the gates of our finals venues. The gatekeepers are not there for spectators to abuse if they don’t like the fact they have to pay to gain entry into the ground. The VAFA has always charged entry to finals matches – it is not a new concept. Club’s are aware of this and we would encourage all clubs to communicate to their supporters that they will have to pay to gain entry to VAFA finals venues. We understand that whilst we don’t charge during the season, we do make exception for finals and representative matches. When compared to other competitions that charge year round and even charge players on game day, it’s not too much to ask to pay a small fee. Often you will get to watch up to three games of football in a safe and friendly environment. Oh and be kind to the gatekeepers, they are just doing their job, often for the love of the game.

Benny is an Aussie at last. Unbeknownst to many, Brian ‘Benny’ Goodman has been living in Australia all his life as a permanent resident. That was until recently, as the former Scotsman Benny finally took the Australian Citizenship test and managed to pass. Benny received his citizenship in a ceremony with his family watching on. Whilst Benny got the question on Sir Donald Bradman correct we are yet to establish if he got the question correct on explaining the new interpretation of the holding the ball rule. Congratulations to you Benny and it’s good to know you are finally a true blue Aussie!

FINALS PRICES In line with what we said about the gatekeepers above – again here are the prices for finals. And remember gatekeepers will also deny access for any dogs to a VAFA finals venue, so to save any angst at the gate, please leave your pooch at home when coming to the football.

Congratulations to the winners of the Carlton Draught VAFA Tipping Competition for 2013. Each winner will receive a professional dart board (pictured) from our friends at Carlton Draught worth $250 RRP. The winner of the Premier to Premier C tipping comp was the VAFA’s man of mystery Max McGraw who established lead with about 6 rounds to go and never relinquished it.

Max almost won the double, but just missed out on the margin category to Panther who claimed the Division 1 - Division 4 tipping comp. Both winners can come into Sportscover Arena to pick up their prize at their earliest convenience. A list of the top 10 tipsters in each competition are below, well done to all tipsters and we hope you will all be back in season 2014.

FOR THE LOVE THE GAME

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SHARPSHOOTERS Well done to all the leading Goal kickers in each of the sections. It is a fantastic performance to win the Sherrin Sharp Shooter Leading Goalkicker Award. Interestingly there was a tie in Division 2 where Therry Penola Brothers Corey and Jarrod Bannister were waxing with each other in the final home and away round to ensure they finished equal on top with 77 goals each. It appeared that Old Brighton teammates Daniel Anthony and Tom Mentiplay tried the same trick in their last game. As Mentiplay’s 7 goals and Anthony’s 4 took them both to 59 goals for the year. Unfortunately for the Old Brighton boys, they didn’t count on AJAX’s David Fayman booting 9 goals in the last game to pip them both at the post with 60 goals for the year. There were the two centurions in Mitch Sweney (UHS-VU – Division 3 Reserves) and Aaron Cloke (Oakleigh – U19 South) who deserve plaudits. Also congratulations to Old Xaverians small forward Brendan Goss (pictured) who you could almost mark down for five goals each week as he bagged 73 goals for the year. The lowest winning total was in the U18 competition where St Bernard’s Jeremy Sullivan won the leading goal kicker with 35 for the year. 12

Kew’s versatile Jeremy Fultheim joined the U19’s in 2005 and was appointed Captain and then promptly won the VAFA U19 Best and Fairest Medal. Successfully moving onto the Seniors he is equally at home in attack, defence or midfield with his pace, attack on the ball and positive attitude.

As part of the celebrations of having a stand alone Premier Grand Final, the VAFA have decided to hold a Woodrow Medal and VAFA Awards night to be held at Crown’s River Room on Wednesday 18th September. The new status of the event will be to ensure this becomes a premium VAFA event.

This is part of a VAFA initiative to make the evening more player oriented. By hosting the Woodrow Medal night at a premium Melbourne venue, overlooking the city, our intention is for this to become a major event, with an ambition to have as many players and their partners attend as possible.

It will be the first time the VAFA have counted all 18 rounds of the Woodrow Medal in a first class location. Woodrow Medal Night will be a celebration of the season and both the mark and 2XU goal of the year will also be presented.

All other sections of the VAFA best and fairest counts will have been counted on 96.5 Inner FM as has been the case in the previous two seasons. The competition best and fairest winners from the other sections will be presented on the night.

ROVERS & MONDERS THRIVE BESIDE THE SEASIDE There were no upsets last weekend as Division 1’s final series kept to schedule. Prahran Assumption’s season came to an end after being eliminated by Ormond, while Williamstown CYMS get a second shot at glory after being trumped by a superior Hampton Rovers hand. Both matches were played at the blustery Trevor Barker Oval but it was the form of the Rovers who once again demonstrated their control and authority over the section in 2013, that caught the eye. In the second semi-final, Williamstown CYMS made the trip to Trevor Barker Oval in Sandringham to tackle top seed Hampton Rovers. In what was essentially a Rovers home game on the basis of the crowd and location, the CYs would have to fight all the way. Williamstown had the breeze at their backs in the first quarter, but couldn’t make the most of the advantage. The game started like any good finals matchup should, with hard hitting contests, not giving their opponents an inch, resulting in pressured, quick kicks and eventual turn overs as both sides adjusted to the conditions. In a back and forth quarter, Hampton struck first against the wind, Williamstown rallied late in the quarter but this trend of chasing eventually caught up to the CY’s. The second quarter was all Hampton, as the game opened up so did the Williamstown defence. Josh “Speedy” McPherson mirrored his nickname with a rundown tackle, then moments later, breaking from the pack with speed, finding Luke Dallas alone in the goal square. After getting touches across the back half in the first, Daniel Corp now made an impact up forward, kicking two in a row. The floodgates beckoned to burst open as the Rovers streamed through the middle at will, with Hampton winning nearly all centre clearances for the term. Hampton managed eight goals for the quarter along with keeping Williamstown scoreless to earn a 52-point lead at halftime. In the third quarter Corp again started spare man back against the wind. He was eventually manned up, but Hampton proved to handle the conditions better than their opponents as again, CY’s didn’t make the most of the wind. In what was an inaccurate term for Williamstown, they kicked 16

3.5 and were down by 44 with one quarter to play. You knew it was Hampton’s day when Daniel Corp kicked the luckiest of goals in an attempt to centre of the ball from the boundary line. The snap bounced like a Shane Warne leg break, evading teammates and opponents and rolled through for a miracle goal. From here the game was a formality, Williamstown dented the final margin with Ben Gray kicking three goals but it would be for nothing. Hampton’s defensive duo Rory Lynch and Jesse Lovig held Gray and the Williamstown forwards at bay for the majority of the match while Luke Dallas bagged five goals from the goal square. Mark Devereaux was awarded best on ground with his sublime effort in the midfield, as Hampton ruled the midfield battle to be victorious by 39-points and earn a spot in the Grand Final and a return to Premier C a year after being relegated from that section. The first semi-final on Sunday delivered what the previous day’s matchup couldn’t, a contest. Ormond and Prahran Assumption fought it out for the entire four quarters, although the skills at times were not aesthetically pleasing, the intent was. Prahran Assumption started proceedings with the five goal breeze, but Ormond hit the scoreboard first as the Monders were aggressive against the wind, daringly switching the ball which eventuated in a goal for Jordan Tabakman. Prahran Assumption were wasteful early, bombing it forward where Ormond’s full back, Matthew Oaten racked up the spoils and intercept marks. The Two Blues made use of the wind towards the back half of the quarter kicking the last four goals to take a 21-point lead. The second quarter started much the same as the first, as now Ormond struggled to make use of the wind butchering it when entering inside 50. Once the Monders eradicated the instinctive bomb from their game and opted for measured passing, they dictated terms kicking six goals in a row. Prahran Assumption chopped away at the lead late kicking the last two goals, with the half ending with Ormond ahead by three points. As the siren sounded there was a scuffle as players from both teams wrestled there way towards the rooms. A feisty second half was on the cards. Poor skills again riddled the matchup with the wind blowing a gale, making spotting up targets difficult. Sam Blandford showed run and carry was the opportune counter to the strong breeze, charging through the middle and hitting Matt Robbins on the chest. Prahran Assumption’s third quarter was a mirror image of their first, unable to establish a significant lead with the wind as Oaten was again a thorn in the Two Blues’ side with consecutive spoils and second efforts ending Prahran Assumption’s foray forward. The two sides kicked three goals apiece for the quarter, with Prahran Assumption taking a slender two-point advantage into the final change. The Two Blues kicked the first of the quarter extending their lead to eight points. Enter Matt Robbins. Ormond’s forward slotting three of his four crucial goals in the last quarter, carving up the Two Blues’ defence out of the goal square. Prahran Assumption mounted a comeback pulling the margin back to a solidary goal, but Alistair McCooke sealed the victory for Ormond in the dying minutes. Matthew Martinov controlled the midfield throughout the match, leading his side to a 15-point win in the 1st semi final.

DIVISION 1

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2013

This week, while Hampton has the weekend off, Williamstown CYMS gets their chance at redemption as they meet Ormond for a place in the Grand Final and Premier C alongside the Rovers. Williamstown and Ormond were 1-1 in their regular season outings, with the most memorable being the 95-point smashing the Monders gave the CY’s in round 12. Ormond ruckman Daniel Haysom was stretchered off with a serious injury in the first quarter last Sunday, which will undoubtedly affect Ormond’s chances as they are up against the best ruckman in the section, Stephan Puhar. Williamstown’s defenders struggled to contain Hampton last weekend, while Ormond was firing on all cylinders with multiple dangerous goal kicking opportunists, presenting worrying signs for the CY’s. Williamstown finished higher on the ladder but Ormond’s recent form makes them favourites. Ormond to win by 10.

DIVISION 2

Brenton Mann

@BrentyMann

BUSHRANGERS TAKE ROUTE 1 TO DIVISION 1 Semi-final week is done and dusted, and we learnt a bit more about each of the four sides. Yarra Valley put in the performance of the year, they pressured Therry Penola into submission, thus earning them a Grand Final spot and with it automatic promotion into Division 1. It is a monumental achievement after winning the Division 3 premiership in 2012, the Bushrangers now have their sights well and truly fixed on the 2013 premiership cup. For the Lions it isn’t necessarily back to the drawing board. They had a mare on Saturday and have the talent to carry them to greater glory. St Mary’s Salesian shocked everyone, including myself, and hammered Old Eltham into the Northcote Park turf. The Turtles limped into the finals, suffering injuries to key players in previous weeks, barely giving a yelp on Sunday and would have enjoyed Mad Monday. The 2nd Semi-Final held on Saturday between Therry Penola and Yarra Valley always promised to be a cracker...and it didn’t disappoint. In near perfect conditions, the two class sides of Division 2 played out the game of the year. The Lions started the better with Jarrod Bannister marking and goaling early, they looked set to put the Bushrangers to the sword. However after a victory over Therry Penola in round 17, Yarra Valley had the tools to pick apart the Lions’ game plan. Their key focus was to pressure the Lions all over the ground, but especially through the midfield. They denied the Lions’ midfielders time and space, everywhere they turned they saw not one, but two or three Bushrangers jumpers coming at them. The two split the points in the first quarter but it was the next two where the Bushrangers really turned up the heat. James Amos gave the Bushrangers’ midfielders first use at the stoppages, and they capitalised. Yarra Valley’s pressure in their front half was outstanding. They constantly caused the Therry Penola defenders to turn the ball over and then hurt them on the scoreboard. The Bushrangers put on four goals to one and went into the main break with a 22 point lead. It was much of the same after halftime 18

with Yarra Valley’s full ground pressure going up another notch. The Bushrangers ran over the top of the Lions, holding them goalless and piling on five of their own to hold a commanding 51 point lead. The last quarter was one of intrigue. It may have been a mixture of the Bushrangers spending all of their petrol tickets in the previous three quarters and Therry Penola capitalised when the game opened up. The Lions threatened to cause an upset but a nine goal deficit proved to be a bridge too far. They held the Bushrangers goalless, put on four of their own, three of those kicked by Cory Bannister, but ultimately failed by 28 points. The Bushrangers have the mental edge over the minor premier and a week to refresh, whereas Therry Penola face an inform St Mary’s side, determined to silence their critics. Finals regularly provide shock results and whilst St Mary’s Salesian beating Old Eltham wasn’t a shock, the way they went about it certainly was. The Saints were on from the start and the injury plagued Old Eltham crumbled under the finals pressure. In blustery conditions Mitch Adam gave the Saints midfield brigade - led by Heath Chipperfield first use at the stoppages and set the tone early. Saints’ forward Lindsay Moreen kicked two first quarter goals and the Saints had a very handy 23 point break at the first change. The second term produced much of the same with the Saints’ winning the contested ball through midfield at the same time applying immense tackling pressure. Inaccuracy in front of goals was the only mark against the Saints and if not for this they would have put the result beyond doubt earlier than they did. With a five goal advantage, the last quarter belonged to the Saints. They dominated through the midfield and with their back six as resolute as ever, the forwards reaped the rewards. Luke Childs banged on two last term goals to guide the Saints’ to a resounding 49 point win. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2013

PRELIMINARY FINAL This week’s Preliminary Final sees the Division 2 powerhouse Therry Penola taking on an in form St Mary’s Salesian. The Lions will be keen to atone for their disappointing Semi Final performance and the Saints will be looking to spoil their party. After last week’s results this game may be tighter than previously thought. The weight of expectation may have been a contributing factor to Therry Penola’s performance in the second and third quarters last week, or Yarra Valley may have uncovered a chink in their armour. If St Mary’s are any chance of causing an upset, then 120 minutes of fanatic full ground tackling pressure is a must. They must tackle, carrel, harass and make the Lions feel like they are playing in a phone box to have any chance of victory. For the Lions, they must bring their final term form from last week into this knock-out final, they have the talent but this week is about attitude.

AS NERVES DISSIPATE WE REACH FEVER PITCH One weekend down, two to go. On an unseasonably warm end of August/start of September weekend, we got what was expected. Kew (1st), UHS-VU (2nd) and Elsternwick (3rd) all won comfortably as we move onto the preliminary final weekend. The lucky loser, St Francis Xavier (4th) will play Kew on Sunday afternoon. Although Kew’s performance suggests SFX will be up against it come the weekend, the last result between the two clubs was a draw and as they say, September is a completely new ball game. UHS-VU and Elsternwick will battle it out on Sunday in a mouth-watering contest. For two clubs it will be the end of their time in Division 3 as they finally wander over to the grass on the other side. Some clubs are completely ready to move up; others are probably content in a smaller pond. Yarra Valley for instance was more than ready as they made the double jump to Division 1 with their win over Therry Penola on the weekend. Others like South Mornington, lost too much momentum in the off-season and have succumbed to the higher standard, wilt to the cesspool of Division 4 once again. However, this opportunity is too great to pass up. Each of the four sides will be hungry to achieve the promotion a grand final berth brings and the possibility of premiership success. UHS-VU took on the Richmond Chinos on Saturday afternoon at Central Reserve. The ground was in spectacular nick and Richmond looked the dominant side in the first quarter, leading by 19 points at the first change. From that point on, UHSVU absolutely dominated proceedings and sent a message to the rest of the competition. Their pace off half back and up forward was immense as Michael Fitzclarence and the two Beansteads were irrepressible. The sting was well and truly out of the contest by the last quarter and Mark Temming received a warm reception as he came off, completely exhausted. One of the toughest aspects of finals footy is adjusting to the bigger grounds and UHS-VU seemed to relish the more sizeable surroundings. For Richmond, Nino Bucci and Sam Brown continued their fine seasons providing plenty of run. The after-match refreshments were relatively subdued for a side who would have said at the start of the year that nothing less than a prelim final would do.

20

Aquinas came out strongly against the Kew Bears and kicked the first goal but from that point on they could only manage two more goals for the game. In front of a solid crowd at Ted Ajani Reserve, the Bears buried the ghost of 2012 with a comprehensive 54 point win over Aquinas. The two great rivals traded blows throughout as it occasionally looked the game was to boil over but with credit of the officials and the players, the game remained a ferocious battle within the rules. Michael Cochrane and Michael Matheson were sensational in defence for the Bears as Andy Brazzale kicked 3. Anthony La Marca was terrific in the midfield for the Bloods but the depth of the Kew XVIII was simply too much for a side who had struggled to maintain their consistency throughout the season. Kew’s celebrations were tempered by the desire to make this season a particularly successful one whilst Aquinas will be looking to go a couple better next season. At ¾ time, only 5 points separated Elsternwick and St Francis Xavier but an impeccable final quarter display by the ‘Wick saw them win by a comfortable 6 goal margin. Aaron Thornton kicked 5 and their forward line looked potent despite Justin Hunter missing once again. SFX’s big three (C Smith, Van Dam and ‘Dimma’) who I have spoken about so frequently throughout the year were again in the best few however it just wasn’t enough on the day. Andrew Oldfield continued his fine form as he looks poised to take out Elsternwick’s best and fairest whilst the big Irishman Declan Healy again patrolled their back 50 with great temerity. SFX count themselves lucky enough to fight another day despite the loss and will maintain they are a huge chance to knock off Kew after they drew with them in their previous fixture. WEEK 2: FINALS PREVIEW KEW V ST FRANCIS XAVIER @ CENTRAL RESERVE Although Kew shook the monkey off their back on the weekend, they find themselves in a far more vulnerable position this week in the knockout preliminary final. SFX is the major underdog in this contest and that will suit them. If Kew can shut out two of the big 4, they will more than likely win with their superior depth however if ‘Dimma’ can lead the SFX with a couple of goals and plenty of ball, SFX will find themselves looking at a shot at the premiership. The last time the two sides played, the game ended in a stalemate. The move from Saturday to Sunday will please most parties as a 6 day break would have really tested the bruised bodies on both sides. Kew by 12 points.

AND A QUICK LOOK AT THE 2s... Kew take on Richmond Central and UHS-VU face La Trobe. I expect the two strongest sides in the comp (the home sides) to both win but the added depth of Richmond Central due to their loss in the seniors will create great interest.

UHS-VU V ELSTERNWICK @ BILL LAWRY OVAL This shapes as a most intriguing battle. UHS-VU receive an extra day break but I believe that will be redundant considering every side is so used to getting back up after 7 days anyway. Thornton will be tough to match up on but UHS-VU’s defence is very impressive and hard to break down. The Prince of Uni High, Nick Rowland, worked his way back into form and along with Atherton and the Beansteads may prove to be too much for the slower, more battle-hardened midfield of Elsternwick. I see the two key matchups as Declan Healy on Rhys Kirk/ Mark Temming and Ben Atherton/Nick Rowland on Andrew Oldfield. UHS-VU by 18 points.

UNBELIEVABLE BLUES The Northern Blues have sent shockwaves through the Division Four finals candidates, after a 53 point dismantling of premiership favourites Hawthorn. Finishing in sixth place, the Blues surprised all on lookers including some of their own faithful at Ted Ajani Reserve. The challenge was met head on as they tackled the best performed side over the course of the home and away season, and they produced a stunning upset victory. In other results, Point Cook and North Brunswick were both knocked out of the finals series following losses to West Brunswick and Eley Park respectively. The three winners, along with the Hawks who can consider themselves ‘lucky losers’ now progress to week two of the finals. If Hawthorn are the lucky losers then Point Cook were the unlucky losers. Had Hawthorn won as many expected then the Bulldogs would have been playing this week. In the upset of the season, the sixth placed Northern Blues thrashed the top of the table Hawks. Whilst the Blues only lost by 8 points against the Hawks a few weeks ago not many people would have seen this coming and certainly not to the extent it did. The Blues looked on the from the start as their tackling pressure and run and carry was first rate. After quartertime, the Blues outscored the Hawks by 13 goals to 5 in a dominant display, with Scott (4 goals), Marcon (3) and Parkes (3) getting on the end of some excellent midfield work. The 53 point winning margin comes to a shock to the entire Division, no more so than to the Hawks, who had their sights firmly set on a dominant finals series. The Hawks will go on to play Eley Park in a make or break final, while the Blues will tackle West Brunswick in what promises to be a tantalizing affair. The ramifications of this result are huge for Eley Park who now face the top side instead of West Brunswick. In the battle between third and fourth, it was West Brunswick who emerged victorious from an elimination final with Point Cook. In an excellent game of finals footy, the Pies were only able to 22

break free from the Bulldogs fierce pressure late in the game, kicking three goals to none in the last quarter. For the first three quarters, the Bulldogs were well and truly in the game and probably deserved to be leading at threequarter time, with West Brunswick getting goals at crucial stages in the match to halt the Bulldogs momentum. For the Pies, Baker and Bull were solid down back, while Gibson and Beer provided plenty of gusto through the midfield. For the Dogs who will yet again rue their missed chances in a finals series, Ricky Munn booted three while Auciello and Phillps were both very good across the ground. A disappointing end to a promising season for the boys from the west. A seven goal to first quarter from Eley Park, plus the fact they kept North Brunswick scoreless was enough for the Sharks to overcome a determined Bulls outfit by 36 points. The Sharks booted 7.6.48 to the Bulls doughnuts 0.0.0 in the first quarter. However to the Bulls credit they outscored the Sharks for the rest of the game. Experienced in finals campaigns, the Sharks seemed to take the occasion in their stride, while North Brunswick appeared like a deer in the headlights after a first finals campaign in 10 years (not a good omen for Richmond this week). Best players for the Sharks were again Team of the Year standout Matt Corstorphin, while Viola and Pillay kicked three goals each. For the Bulls, Pat Notaro snagged two in a quiet affair, while Davis and Sansonetti were prolific across the board. North Brunswick say goodbye to senior coach Brad Martin who has devoted four years to the senior side, improving them dramatically. The Sharks move on to play the Hawks in what will be a huge match, and worthy of a GrandFinal. The Magpies have a date with the confident North Blues. For the winners a grand final berth and promotion to Division 3, the vanquished will have a summer to find that extra something to take them to greater heights in 2014. RETROSPECTIVE

Geoff Reilley

@GeoffreyReilley

5 YEARS AGO – 2008 Of all the many exciting finals at Trevor Barker Oval over the years, this C Section Preliminary was one of the best. It was a perfect, sunny, spring afternoon as Hampton Rovers faced up to Oakleigh. Every time the Rovers looked like breaking away in the first half Oakleigh fought back and held a slender but important lead at the final break. The Rovers lifted in the last quarter and Jason Zampaglione dealt the final blow not long before the final siren for a 9 point lead although Trevor Bromley brought it back to only 2 points with a goal on the siren – 15.17 to 15.15; a magnificent example of amateur, finals’ footy. Best – Zampaglione (4), Semmel (3), Deveraux, Carr, Lyall, Wynne (HR) and Doherty, Bennett, Hogan, Kitts, Rutter, McGarry (Oakleigh). Dom Napoli and Luke Holmes were the field umpires with Ben Halfpenny, Clayton Evans, Russell Davidson and Rebecca Brown covering the boundary and goals respectively. Old Geelong led North Old Boys/St Pats all day to win the D1 Preliminary 17.14 to 14.13 and were delighted to be competing in C Section for 2009. 10 YEARS AGO – 2003 In typical windy conditions at this time of the season, De La Salle handled the conditions better than Old Brighton to win the B Section first semi final, 11.11 to 9.14. Old Brighton had chances in the final term with the wind but overused the ball and were not direct enough in the opinion of the experts. In the C Section Preliminary Final, Beaumaris turned their form right around from the losing second semi and overwhelmed St Leos Emmaus 22.11 to 9.7. With 9 goals to nil in the second quarter, The Sharks had taken complete control of the game. 20 YEARS AGO – 1993 In the C Section Preliminary Final, AJAX appeared to have the majority of the ball in the first quarter but squandered opportunities. They trailed Ivanhoe by 10 points at quarter time but used the ball better in the second quarter to lead by three and a half goals. The ‘Hoes’ kept up their counter-attack in the third quarter and were only 6 points behind going into the last quarter. Early in the last quarter it was a real arm wrestle but 42

with Rozenberg controlling the ruck, the AJAX runners started to create mayhem and their three goals in a row broke the back of the brave Hoes, final score 20.17 to 16.17. Graham White (Kew) and Marcus Olive (St Kevins) were the winners of the C Section and D Section VAFA Best & Fairest Awards respectively. The D Section Preliminary Final saw a great win by Old Geelong over Old Ivanhoe 12.9 to 6.7 to entitle the OG’s to another crack at St Bedes Mentone Tigers in the Grand Final and automatic entry into C Section for 1994.

30 YEARS AGO – 1983 Collegians proved far too strong for North Old Boys in the A Section first semi final, 17.15 to 13.10. Collegians’ accuracy in front of goal was telling in the first half with 10.1 to 8.4. It was a fantastic first semi final in B Section with Kew just getting over the line by the barest of margins against Alphington, 13.17 to 13.16. Kew had trailed all day but were outstanding in the final term with 5.7 to 1.4. VAFA best and fairest winners for the season included A White (Therry) in D Section, R Morley (Bulleen United) in E Section and D Morrison (Old Geelong) in F Section. 40 YEARS AGO – 1973 In A Section, Caulfield Grammarians were too strong for North Old Boys in the first semi final, 13.16 to 8.9. In the B Section Preliminary Final, Uni Blacks defeated Kew 8.15 to 7.12. The Blacks survived a strong challenge from Kew in the final term. The field umpires for the weekend’s finals were announced – Bill Mason (A) and Daryl George (B), Ken Jorgenson and Colin Wills (C), John Posetti and Terry Gannon (D), David Jenkin and Trevor Rowe (E) and David Dressing and Darryl Hill (F). 50 YEARS AGO – 1963 Denis Dalton (Old Paradians) won the A Section best and fairest with 27 votes from Jocka Nelson (22) and Ian Turnbull (5), both from MHSOB, second and third respectively. Peter Scanlon (Coburg) won the B Section medal with 27 votes from Ian Redpath (Geelong Amateurs) on 23. Graeme Brewer (National Bank), Brian Chettle (Preston) and John Adams (NOBS) won the C, D and E Sections medals. UHSOB won the Preliminary Final in B Section defeating Coburg and Caulfield Grammarians won the C Section prelim against St Kilda CBC. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2013

UNDER 19

U19 Premier — with Olivia Crowe Finals football arrived and it is amazing what excitement it can bring. Ladder leaders Old Xaverians and St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers battled it out in the second semi for a grand final berth. The Tigers got off to a slow start on the scoreboard with inaccurate goal kicking (1.10), but came out a different side in the third term outscoring Xavs, kicking 5 goals to 1. Unfortunately it ended there for the Tigers, as the Xavs dominance continued going on to win by 25 points and sit one match from September glory. Harry Lachal kicked 4 for the victors, whilst Michael O’Connor had 3 for the

@Liv_Crowe Tigers. The first semi saw St Kevins and St Bernards clash in a close encounter. Both sides struggled to hit the scoreboard successfully but despite being inaccurate the Snowdogs were able to claim a 14 point win. Tom Soultanakis finished his year off strongly and had a day out with two goals and best afield honours for the SKOB’s, whilst Alex Boyse kicked 4 for the victors.

Prelim final time and what a fantastic match it should be between two good teams in St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers and St Bernards, both have had great seasons. It’s not an easy selection to tip, but the Tigers should bring it home in what will be a close encounter.

U19 Section 2 with Lewis Emmerson @LewisEmmerson Parkdale hosted an exciting while Parkdale’s Sean Hendricks continued to clash against Collegians. The showcase his creativity and skills. Parkdale held game was fast and ferocious on to win by 13 points. with neither side relenting their attack on the ball. A heavy A Grand Final spot was on the line in the wind created a definite scoring showdown between Werribee and Fitzroy. The end, nevertheless plenty of match lived up to the script until half time; Fitzroy goals were scored into it. The margin was tight up by only 3 points. Juxtaposed to the first half, the entire day, with Parkdale looking set for the game could not have been more one-sided. victory midway into the last quarter after a goal Werribee will be bitterly disappointed with put them 4 goals in front. The courage Collegians their second half, which saw them go down by showed next was inspirational, kicking the next 57 points. Werribee’s top line midfielder David 3 goals in quick succession to make the final 10 Briscoe could hold his head up high kicking 2 minutes as nerve racking as possible. Collegians while Fitzroy’s Luke Baker stood up as he has all Tim Phillips, despite being tagged, was brilliant season long.

U19 Section 3 with Darren Dawson —

It was not quite on a par with Black Caviar getting swamped down the straight at Flemington, but it was not far off. The enormity of Northern Blues’ 87-point 2nd semi thrashing was completely unexpected. From the bounce it was clear that it was to be AJAX’s day. The Blues’ forwards could not fire a shot, whilst their midfield was completely dominated. Brandon Joel was best afield for AJAX with seven goals, receiving excellent support from Lerner and Lewis. Edwards and Hull were best for the Blues. At the Fearon, Whitefriars withstood a second-half 44

@smokiedawson

challenge from Williamstown CYMS to defeat the home-ground favourites by 7 points. The Friars led by 27 at the main break, but the CYs threw everything at the visitors in the second half only to fail by seven points. Willy should be disappointed falling at the first hurdle. Best for Friars were Dinh, McGurgan & Hickey (4 goals), whilst Knight (3 goals) was bright up forward for CYs. After some mid-week soul-searching, I will be most surprised if last week’s big defeat does not spark Blues into playing their best footy today. On the expanses of Central Reserve, I am tipping the Blues to get their running game going against the Friars to win by 10 points. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2013

U19 North with Nick Duxson @nicholasjduxson

Old Ivanhoe have secured a Grand Final berth after holding off Ivanhoe by nine points at Chelsworth Park. In a low scoring game, the Magpies kept the ladder leaders scoreless in the opening quarter, before the ‘Hoes responded. Pierce and Valkanis both featured among Old Ivanhoe’s best with two goals each, while Treloar and McGregor impressed in defeat. The big guns fired up forward in a dominant St Mary’s Salesian display, as they ended Therry Penola’s season with a 108-point thrashing. The Saints kicked out to a strong lead early and

extended it at every change, Holmes and Gook both booting five and Andrews four in a beston-ground display. The Lions were held goalless after half time, but were well served as usual by Tatlock and Calafiore. This week… Ivanhoe have the double chance, and they take on St Mary’s Salesian bright and early at Bill Lawry Oval this Saturday. The ledger stands at one win each, with the Magpies escaping with a narrow three point win in their last meeting a month ago. In what has been an even season among the top five teams, both will fancy their chances – but the power-packed Saints forward line could prove the difference.

U19 South with Nick Duxson @nicholasjduxson

It was almost a formality, as the Krushers crushed St Bedes/Mentone to progress straight through to the Grand Final. Cloke snared six and Still five, as Oakleigh ran all over the Tigers in the second half to win by a whopping 85 points. Young played a lone hand for the Tigers, kicking three of their five goals, while Lever, Mase and Tate all featured prominently for the ladder leaders. Beaumaris continued their rich vein of form, comfortably overcoming Old Mentonians after quarter time. The OM boys held a five-point lead at the first change, but the Shark attack arrived

UNDER 19 Premier (YEARS TOTAL 64 / 71%) St Bedes/Mentone Tigers v St Bernards

and didn’t let up. Chamberlain slotted five goals in the win, while Hardeman and Snowden also featured among Beaumaris’ best players. Rossi and Oliver both kicked two for Old Mentonians. This week… Central Reserve plays host to a preliminary final between St Bedes/Mentone and Beaumaris on Sunday at 11.40 am. The Sharks won in Rd 18 against the Tigers by six goals, turning the tables on the Tigers’ big win in their other clash earlier in the season. Beaumaris have definitely struck form at the right time, winning their last five, while St Bedes/Mentone have suffered consecutive losses.

UMPIRES

Steve McCarthy & Leah Gallagher

@VAFAUA

Proudly supported by

East Malvern Community Bank®Branch 300 Waverley Road, East Malvern, phone 9563 6044

RUSTY OLD MILESTONE This weekend we see one of our all-time great field umpires in Russell Davidson clock up his 200th VAFA game. After quite a few games in the VFL and a premature retirement Rusty decided to join the VAFA. During those 199 games his list of achievements is huge as follows: 6 Premier (A) grand finals, 1 Premier B grand final, 9 Big V representative games (including a trip to New Zealand), 29 finals (including today), VAFA Umpire of the Year in 2006, VAFAUA President for three years, Pre-finals Dinner Co-ordinator for 5 years and of course only a few weeks ago he was inducted as a VAFAUA Life Member

PROMOTION TIME Congratulations to all teams that are playing off in grand finals next week and see themselves playing in a higher section next year. To the umpires who are running, enjoy the atmosphere of the big day, it’s not over yet! FINALS TIME Don’t we love this time of the year, weather was fantastic last week to commence the finals series. Umpires, umpire teams they have not seen before, and the teams say “who are these blokes, they’re not our usual umpires” and the fun begins for next three weeks. HERITAGE ROUND Round 18 in Premier saw the VAFAUA version of heritage round with three old boys getting a crack to turn back the clock and run again in A Grade (as it used to be called when they were last there). Mark Gibson returned after a three year break, Steve McCarthy after a seven year break, but what about Darren (Daggles) Dalgleish returning after a fifteen year break. There WAS a nine year retirement in there for Daggles. They all went back in time to relive some golden moments. Let’s just say the bodies are old and the minds and willing which can only sum up the performance of the trio. Any truth that wheelchairs were required to get home after the game? A fair bit of rehydration was required after the games. 52

DEBUTANTS With that last round in Premier we also had some debutants. Apologies to all the other debutants we’ve had during the year, but there are too many to mention. Last week Jayde Daly who only a couple of weeks ago umpired her first Premier B was given a taste of Premier with her appointment to the Collegians/Old Xavs game. Jayde makes it as only the second female field umpire to get to Premier grade (yes, Leah, we remember who the first was!) and here’s hoping that next year we can get Alex Anthony in there early next year. There were a few other debutants in Premier last week. Field umpires Warren Graham (oldest ever debutant?), Ben La Vale and Jayson Nooy, along with Johanna Bruinstroop running the boundary. Special mention to Johanna who finished her game after being pretty ill at quarter time. VFL/TAC FINALS ACTION Great to see so many former VAFA umpires performing at the higher level in finals last weekend. Field umpires Robert O’Gorman (VFL seniors), Brent Wallace (VFL Development League), Jarryd Barry and Dan Lawlor (TAC). Boundary umpires James Scully and Damien Cusack (VFL seniors). Goal umpires Steven Piperno and Anthony Kyrkou (VFL seniors), Chris Doyle and Matthew Dervan (VFL Development League), and Alistair Kyrkou (TAC). Shows that the VAFA is a great pathway. PREMIER GRAND FINAL DAY Don’t forget to keep Premier Grand Final Day (Saturday 21 September 2013) free. The traditional Premier GF lunch will kick off at 11:30am. Cost is $35 and includes entry to the ground, two course meal and a free drink! Tables are filling fast! More details to be announced shortly including a guest speaker. Following the Grand Final there will be presentations to the Premier Grand Final Umpires, cheap drinks, a free BBQ (thanks to Harris Family Butchers), a DJ and possibly an AFL Preliminary Final on the big screen. FINALS FOOTY As finals fever hit the section and the results went the way as I’d hoped for (with my successful tips) it produced one blowout and a match that went down to the wire. As dominate as they have been all season (and undefeated) the finals ball game didn’t affect the Giants as they easily accounted for their opponents Werribee by 140 points on their home turf. The Tigers struggled to get the ball down forward as they were only able to score three behinds and the Giants kicking 17 by the main break. Kew’s Callum Spencer kicked 4 for the victors as Tim Mallia was impressive with two for the Tigers. The win sees a grand final berth for the Giants, leaving the Tigers with another opportunity against Point Cook this week. It was a close contest down at Fearon Reserve between Point Cook and Williamstown CYMS and it certainly lived up to it’s expectations as only minimal points separated both sides at every change. The Bulldogs claimed the 3 point victory and a spot in the prelim. Paul Cutajar–Miloser kicked 4 for Williamstown whilst power forward Kurt Mayne kicked 3 for the victors. Unfortunately it draws a close on Williamstown’s season but I no doubt believe they will be a force come 2014.

taking. Either Werribee Tigers or Point Cook Bulldogs will have that relief of making the decider at the final siren. In what will be a physical contest it should also produce a stellar game of football. Both sides have had fairly consistent seasons, but as finals football is a different ball game the Tigers should have enough to take on Kew in the Grand Final the following week.
