who will be playing their first matches as a senior club in Division 4 this year.

The VAFA launched season 2013 in glittering style at the MCC Members Dining Room last Wednesday.

Guest speaker Gary March enlightened the attendees with a summation of how Richmond had endeavoured to transform their club from being unsuccessful both on and off the field to a club that had regained respect in the football community. To begin proceedings, the VAFA’s first full time General Manager, Peter French proposed the toast and this was responded to by first year president Michael Hazell.

Michael has had a decorated VAFA career, similar to his predecessor Bruno Conti, and with his various off field roles in business is well placed to lead the VAFA into our next phase. His speech highlighted the need for all our clubs to work together to improve the commercial capabilities of the Association to make us more capable of servicing our clubs and the community. This year Michael will be supported by our new vice president Tim Nelson, who played his VAFA football at Old Paradians.

The VAFA is delighted to accept and welcome two new clubs - Dragons and Masala. These names are not those normally associated with football as the clubs are born from cultural backgrounds.

The Dragons, with most players originally from Vietnamese heritage but now focussing on players from all South East Asia, originally played under the banner of Box Hill Nth in our Club XVIII before entering teams in the Southern Football League. After three seasons the club believed that the VAFA could better achieve their goals and ambitions. They will field three teams, two in Division 4 and the other in Club XVIII. Masala have evolved from the Indian team in the International Australian Rules Cup competition and will be playing a sole team in Club XVIII. We should feel proud as an Association that we provide a nonthreatening environment and competitions that allow novices to begin their Australian rules journey. A special mention also to Northern Blues

On the flip side we were disappointed to lose Rupertswood who have decided to play in the Riddell League. There are many reasons why the club chose to leave but we understand their decision. Of course the VAFA does not stand in the way of any club or player who prefers an alternative league. Most of the new clubs that enter our competitions are from the outskirts of Melbourne. These include St Francis Xavier in Berwick, Sth Mornington, Mt Lilydale and Point Cook to name just a few. The VAFA is keen to grow with Metropolitan Melbourne and provide those start up clubs with an alternative to the professional leagues. As a result a new regional sub committee is looking into the issues of both our current and emerging clubs outside our normal catchment areas.

The VAFA is delighted that this season 251 teams will compete in 26 different sections.

This is 13 more than 2012 with the under age competitions swelling to 58, our largest ever. The thirds competition continues to strengthen and consequently another 400 more players will pull on a club jumper this year.

At the top end the quality appears to be strengthening each year. Almost 2000 games of AFL experience will enter the competition this year hopefully providing Simon Lethlean and the other state coaches with more firepower as we defend the Brian Molony Cup against the VCFL. On the field there have been a number of law and interpretation changes. These include forceful contact below the knees, separation of ruckmen at stoppages and dragging the ball back under an opponent. For a more detailed explanation I would ask all players to visit our website.

So the battle for the twenty-six premiership cups begins today. One hundred and twenty six matches played in twenty-four separate councils of Melbourne. Good luck to the 6000 players who will run out today.

WELCOME TO THE 2013 SEASON On behalf of the Board of the VAFA I am very humbled to welcome in the 2013 VAFA season.

there are lots of great times, but when it is late at night or early in the morning and you are not sure why you are doing what you are doing and things aren’t quite going the way you planned, the mind can start wandering towards comments like ”I don’t need this”.

My association with the VAFA has been near on 20 years. As a player, senior coach, junior coach, committee member, runner, club sponsor, board member, and now President. It has been an incredibly fulfilling journey.

I would ask that when these times occur, remember when everything else is stripped away; the win / loss ratio, whether or not your best player is injured, whether or not the books are balanced, remember what you are doing is helping players and others involved at your club to make lifelong friendships.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our Past President Bruno Conti on your wonderful term as President and your overwhelming support for me. It is very much appreciated.

So I want to take this opportunity to say thank you for what you all do for the community. Be proud of what you do and appreciate its importance when things get hard.

I would also like to recognise the support and ongoing contribution of Michael Sholly, our CEO, and the support given to me by all our current and recently retired Board members as well as staff.

This brings me to my next point, the future direction of the VAFA. As leaders, we have the role of visionaries and future makers. We need all take this approach, so we shape our future rather than the future shaping us.

As we move into another VAFA season, I would like to take this opportunity to say a special thank you to everyone at our member clubs for your contribution to the VAFA; reminding you all to never forget the power of what it means to be a volunteer.

To all of us in the room, we all probably share more than a love of amateur football, or for that matter sport. What we share is a great desire and appetite to serve, and to serve the community.

As someone once said: “Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy.

You vote in elections once every so often, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.”

As a volunteer you give time. Time is the most precious resource in our lives. It’s not infinite. And you choose to donate it. Though I am sure you each have your reasons for doing what you do, we will all be poorer if we don’t remind ourselves constantly that the giving of time is outstanding.. But I know it doesn’t come easy. I want to assure you all that we know that work at club land is not an easy effort. It is hard and often thankless. Yes it is rewarding and 2

Without going into too much detail now, the one specific item I will mention about the VAFA’s future direction is the work currently being done in relation to the fundraising side of the VAFA, or what might also be called commercialisation.

My firm view is that this commercial area is so untapped for the clubs and the VAFA, and is fundamentally based on a principle that if we all work together - based on the guidance and leadership of the VAFA, that we can increase the pie of financial resources for us all. Please be assured that by trying to increase the pie of funds through fundraising, we at the VAFA are not about empire building.

However if we can make commercialisation work, then further possibilities will present themselves.

We can afford to help out more with affiliation fees, we can afford to contribute to facilities - club and VAFA, we can afford to continue to retain the very best people which we already have at the VAFA, we can afford to invest more into umpiring, we might be able to buy more insurances for players, we can afford to help with building the amateur brand in far reaching areas where the urban sprawl is happening THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2012

and where clubs are finding it difficult to retain players, maybe we could even afford to donate more to help in the community. Growing the pie for us all can create benefits for everyone in the VAFA.

• Seeing at a charity fund raising lunch last week members of one VAFA club walking around with tins raising money for a foundation. This is what defines the VAFA.

I also want to emphasise how in developing this commercial area, that we have been incredibly diligent in ensuring that we do not take our eye off the ball of our core objective, which is running a football competition. After all, that is our core purpose. Making sure we get 10,000 players plus coaches, volunteers and spectators each weekend get an enjoyable day of football in a properly regulated environment. This is our primary focus and our Football Sub Committee and Competition Integrity Sub Committees have been significantly boosted this year from last year.

• Umpires – not only do they make a positive contribution to the lives of people in the community, they have their own umpires association. A thriving organisation giving a sense of community to the umpiring ranks. This is what defines the VAFA.

Apart from commercialisation, the Board has a firm vision to continue to work very hard to retain what I consider to be the unique attributes of our competition and form the basis of our culture.

Attributes like: • Players playing for the love of the game. The main profits our players realise are found in high fives with teammates, the ache in their muscles the next day, the half- time oranges, or that evenings social activities with mates formed playing for the love of the game.

• Players, umpires and spectators being able to enjoy the game in an environment of mutual respect.

• Continuing to cultivate an environment where people have a place to bond and enjoy each other’s company.

Then there are some less noticed attributes we need to protect. The things I notice along the way which make me realise why I like what I do at the VAFA. Examples I have seen over the past 12 months: • Two new clubs entering our competition, Masala and the Dragons, clubs based on different cultural backgrounds, feeling comfortable to call the VAFA home. I marvel at the range of difference and the ability of people from so many backgrounds to share a dressing room. This is what defines the VAFA. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2012

• The VAFA’s long standing relationship with FIDA, Melbourne’s football competition for the disabled. The way the two organisations have worked together to assist each other for nearly 20 years is unique. This is what defines the VAFA. • Putting to the club Presidents the possibility of clubs taking out quadriplegia and paraplegia insurance in 2013 and there being overwhelming support for this occurring despite the obvious financial stress paying for such insurance puts on a club. This is what defines the VAFA. • The senior coach of a club asking his players and spectators who were watching the reserves game to cease heckling an opposition full back. This boy was being heckled because they thought it was funny to belittle his football ability. Of course, we don’t want to take out of our great game the engagement that happens between spectators and what happens on field, but we also want to make sure that we balance that engagement with a healthy dose of respect.

This is what defines the VAFA. I know that many of these attributes are not unique to the VAFA, but nonetheless they are attributes we must all continue to hold dear and fight to retain and develop further.

In conclusion, there will be different tunes in the 2013 VAFA season for all of us. I am also sure there will be plenty of ups and downs for each of you here. Sport does that. Enjoy the good times, but as I mentioned earlier when the down times occur, remember the higher purpose of why you do what you do.

PREMIER

Andrew Leonard At various times this preseason I have been bailed up by enthusiasts from the clubs that will fight it out in 2013. Bailed up might be a bit dramatic however if last week’s season launch is anything to go by then there are up to six teams that can win the premiership and no one is going to be relegated.

The followers and officials from clubs can be very persuasive. Welcome Beaumaris to Premier for the first time, welcome back Uni Blacks and can Collegians win three in a row? Many questions and I expect egg on my face with at least a couple of these predictions by season’s end.

Beaumaris are the first district side in the top flight for 2 decades and the magnificent achievement is one that should be greeted with great fanfare. With numbers coming into the club from junior teams as well as recruits of former juniors from other VAFA clubs, the Sharks have increased their depth in 2013 for their first assault on Premier football. Nevertheless it is a tough ask in your first year in the top section and Beauy will be up against it. Staying up the goal this year and a likely finish from 6th- 10th.

Collegians will suit up for one of the toughest campaigns in recent times. If there is nothing harder than maintaining motivation to go back to back then try retaining that drive for the threepeat. The player losses the club has suffered are countered by some astute recruiting and wealth of talented juniors the club has. Despite the loss of personnel you don’t lose class over a preseason.

Expect the Lions to be firing when it matters most at the pointy end although there will be a few more dropped games this season, 1st-4th.

De La Salle feel their time is now. A preliminary final loss that should have the entire list believing that a Premier Section premiership is viable for the first time since 1991. Trent Croad is the name that comes but how many games will he play? The losses will hurt too, (FieldsendVFL, Sheilds – retired, Eddy – SANFL, Harrison4

@ LennyVAFA country) and they have their usual compliment of players on VFL lists returning sporadically. If Croad is the replacement for Eddy then he only needs to play half a dozen matches to equal Eddy’s output from last year. 1st-4th Old Carey have lost key players primarily best and fairest winner Julien Rowe who goes to Port Melbourne with the club’s blessing. Have lost co-captain Tom Evans to work commitments & full forward Damian Yze however most of their ‘ins’ are direct replacements. Luke Crozier and Carl Peterson will play plenty of games after their VFL sojourns and former Woodrow Medallist Joel Rice returns to the Ammos from Perth electing to play on the western side of Bulleen Road. Again the question is depth and a possible new game plan under new coach Steve Cochrane. 3rd-8th Old Scotch have snaffled the services of Lindsay Gilbee from Uni Blues and picked up Ed Barlow of Sydney via the Ovens and Murray as well.

There were moments last year when Old Scotch looked like potential Grand Final side. Beat everyone except Collegians last year and with no serious losses are on the way to a better finish again in 2013. There is a lot to like about the Cardinals in 2013. 2nd-6th Old Xaverians have a virtually identical list to 2012. There are a heap of players on VFL lists as well, but expect them to be available for Xavs most weeks. Only 7 points short of another flag last year, its not like there is much change required. combined with former premiership player Dom Berry know what it takes to get this group the extra 8 points on the last day of the year. 1st-3rd St Bedes/Mentone Tigers believe that last year was an aberration and that 2013 is more likely to be a true reflection of the club’s talents. Again a raft of player inclusions from their juniors and players returning to the club after football tours to other pastures has an improvement in depth. Will rely on many of the same names, but are also in the 2nd year under Mick Dwyer and have the best home ground advantage in the section. Despite all this the horror start from last year and the relegation threat will be there until they are safe, therefore they could finish anywhere from 4th-9th.

St Bernard’s have recruited players with experience to compliment their high quality youth. Watching them a number of times last season there were often a third of the team still eligible to play U19s. Co-captains Tom Caven and Adam Bentick (formerly Carlton) have been named for the first time in the club’s history and the club celebrates its 50th year in 2013. The influx of experience will compliment the youth but they are still one more consolidation year away from a serious tilt. 5th-8th Uni Blacks will have a new skipper in Bede Mahon leading their first campaign in Premier for four years. The loss of premiership skipper Dan Costello to work commitments will be felt, but Mahon who won the Cordner Medal for the Blacks as the best and fairest in a premiership year has the respect and support of the playing group in equal measure. Have recruited tall with Brock McCauley and Adam Pattinson plus the surprise of Jason Johnson too. One of the better credentialed promoted sides of recent years, 5th-8th.

Uni Blues have recruited well and their top end talent is very strong, with the great news that former club favourite Ross Young returns after a stint in Perth where he won best and fairests and a Sandover Medal for fun. Nick Smith from Balwyn THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2012

The Footy Beard has surely reached the zenith of popular sporting culture. Your club probably has its fair share, B-grade beards seem to have sprouted over the pre-season quicker than the new TH King deck. They come in all shapes and sizes, from spindly little goatees and neat Ned Kelly trims to the full-blown Grizzly Adams catastrophe.

Are they a sign of strength and superiority, or just a ridiculous follicular cover over an inherent flaw or two? Some might say a little facial growth is ever so manly on a footy field: rugged whiskers framing handsome features, rough stubble over hard-earned scars. Ben Hudson’s bushy thatch is heralded as The People’s Beard, while others suggest a beard is really just a diversion from say, a weak chin, a harelip, a love of Florence Broadhurst wallpaper. And surely the bald head/beard combo (Chapman, McVeigh) smacks just a little of overcompensation? Melbourne’s ever-elongating goatees may be the least of Mark Neeld’s woes, but his team’s intra-beard competition may end up stunting his coaching career growth altogether.

As the season starts anew, we’ll stroke our chins and watch with interest the fortunes of both smooth and stubbled cheeks. In the meantime, here’s a snapshot of where we finished last year and some off-season movements.

Parkdale – Premiers Prem C Coach: Sam Radford The Vultures have made the double leap into B grade with back-to-back flags and an almost unchanged list runs out this weekend apart from travellers Rochford and Kelleher who may return mid-season. Spearhead Matt Boland will line up on release from Collingwood VFL duties, while some exciting under 19s will add to Parky’s power.

Another of Radford’s former Chelsea teammates joins the gang at Gerry Green, ex-Seagull captain Anthony Lewis. A three-peat possibility?

Fitzroy – Runners Up Prem C Coach: Michael Pickering The Roys have picked up NFL players Alex Ricco (Northcote Park) and Daniel Bisetto (Preston Lakeside) as well as handy country recruit Alister Green from Toora. Last year’s Best & Fairest winner 6

With three A grade flags at Old Xavierians and a development role at Aths Australia, O’Shaughnessy brings a heavy focus of competitive hardness to the Fields. Brother Ralph will lend strategic support, along with Dave Matthews plus strength & conditioning guru, Chris Jones. A number of ins from SFL and junior leagues, but outs include stellar names Carbone, Slevison, Scheetz and Perkins. Re-building.

Old Trinity – 9th Premier Coach: Adam Andrews Former team-mate Lucien Deane-Johns joins Andrews in the coaching box along with Gerard Sholly. It’s been a long and arduous pre-season but the Ts expect big improvement on last year’s meagre four wins in Premier. A good crop of unders and a number of experienced seniors return from injury and travel to add significant onfield depth in Old Trinity’s 60th year.

Well versed in youth development, Norton embarks on a spirited eighth year at the helm and a new phase with the maturing finesse of players such as Molivas, Harrington and impressive ruckman Bol Kolang. Gone are Huxtable, Morrow and Panayi but Trav Dean returns to the midfield and there’s always a Taylor, Pelar or Purton bolstering the lineup. The Tigers yielded their Soldiers Reserve fort a few times last year, but are surprisingly good travellers. Underestimate at your peril.

The other big name at AJAX of course is prize recruit Ezra Poyas (Richmond AFL/VFL, Sandringham, JJ Liston Trophy winner) who will steer the midfield. Consolidating year.

Old Brighton – 6th Coach: Simon Williams No new high profile names feature on the ‘Tonners list, but Nick Marston returns from overseas and on-baller Michael Karayannis has been prominent in pracky match wins over the Bloods and Nodders.

Williams’ second year has more cohesion, with Hendra, Perrett and Dickerson playing on, with front-end revelation Dan Anthony. An emerging core of third-year players will be the strength and future of this side. Expect a strong statement.

Old Haileybury – 5th Coach: Darren Seccull New and old faces add depth to the Bloods this year, although they lose prodigal son Brede Seccull to the SANFL. Mick Meehan will again pose a nightmare for defenders, on-baller Mark Collins arrives from Doncaster along with versatile Nick Salvatore (SFL) and Jonno Roberts (EFL). A huge coup for the Haileyburians is the acquisition of a new home ground at Prince’s Park. Practice match form saw them best Caulfield but lose to Brighton and St Bedes/Mentone Tigers. Will be at the pointy end.

OLD SCHOOL RIVALRIES REVISITED We’re back to that time of year when you find yourself traveling to suburbs around Melbourne you’ve never heard of, when the only thing you can smell in the rooms is Deep Heat and the South Melbourne Market dim sims are steamed again out at the Nodder’s Central Reserve.

The 2013 Premier C Section action will see a return to old school rivalries for many clubs as no less than five teams affiliated with AGS schools will go head-to-head ensuring old sparring partners are reunited on a weekly basis. The make up of Premier C was also affected by Rupertswood electing to join the Riddell District Football & Netball League in the off season, ensuring the ninth placed Monash Blues stay up in 2013.

MARCELLIN Having started last year 8-1 and top of the Premier C ladder, the Eagles didn’t finish their season as they would have liked, with a one-point semi final loss to Mazenod stopping them short of a quick return to Premier B. Jarrod Carlson won the 2012 Zachariah Medal as the section’s best and fairest and will be looking to continue that form on field under new senior coach Greg Freemantle who joins Marcellin from the Eastern Football League.

MAZENOD Last year’s third place Nodders will be hoping to go at least one better this year after succumbing to the promoted Fitzroy by 10 goals in the preliminary final. The club gained the services of AFL 200 gamer Heath Black which should bolster their midfield, as well as former Casey Scorpions Gus Patti and Michael Johnson. Having held practice matches with two Premier B sides over the last couple of weeks, they should be raring to go for a big round one clash with Marcellin.

OAKLEIGH The Krushers 2012 season never really got going in Premier B with constant injuries leading to 84 players being used in the seniors and reserves in their 18 games, underlining an unsettled squad. With former Hawthorn and Geelong star Aaron Lord headlining the list of recruits joining as an Assistant Playing Coach alongside Martin Stillman, they will be looking to build on the experience given to their 12 senior debutants last year to guide them back to Premier B.

OLD IVANHOE Having garnered only a solitary win from last year’s Premier B campaign, Old Ivanhoe have been working hard over the off season to ensure their first season in Premier C in 17 years is successful.

With their pre-season motto being “Nothing better than knowing you are fitter than your opponent then running them into the ground”, perhaps we can expect a fast midfield game plan under new senior coach and former Coburg VFL captain Travis Ronaldson. 2007 A Section Best and Fairest Hayden Heta also returns as captain.

PEGS PEGS would have felt unfulfilled having completed a winning season (11-7) yet missing out on finals by percentage after Mazenod saluted in the last round against premiers Parkdale Vultures. Trent Cummings returns for his third season at the helm and will be looking to VAFA U23 representative Cameron Livori to continue his 2012 form.

OLD CAMBERWELL The Wellers finished a half a game short of finals in mid table last year and farewelled Senior Coach Tim Killworth who has taken an opportunity at the Calder Cannons. Taking the reins is former Carlton and North Adelaide player Ben Robertson who will be looking to extract the most out of senior players Roh Kapoor, Damian McGuigan and Jack Duke up forward.

BANYULE Out at Banyule the Bears survived a grueling and injury ravaged year finishing well clear of the relegation zone but out of finals contention at 8 and 10. Craig Hayes takes over from Rick Brockwell as Senior Coach, bringing his experience as an THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2012

assistant coach at VFL side, Northern Bullants to the Bear Cave. They’ll again look to club B&F and Premier C leading goalkicker Adam Barclay to spearhead their attack in 2013.

MONASH BLUES Despite winning only three games and finishing in the dreaded ninth spot, the Ashes won a chance at redemption with Rupertswood exiting stage left in October. Could they go from being (almost) relegated to promoted within 12 months? New coach Hayden Stanton has been appointed from Mulgrave FC to help them take the opportunity with both hands.

NOBS/ST PAT’S NOBS/St Pat’s come up to Premier C after a huge year in Division 1, losing only one match on the way to their 18 point premiership victory over Peninsula at Trevor Barker Oval. Richard Peoples is staying on at the helm and will hope the form of two-time Pepper Medalist Matt Keown continues into the new year.

PENINSULA Another team to breathe a sigh of relief at Rupo’s exit would have been Peninsula as the trip from Mt Eliza to Sunbury would’ve surely been the longest in the VAFA. Peninsula’s strong 2012 has resulted in higher numbers at the club and added depth with their first ever thirds side taking the field this year. Senior Coach Brett McIlwraith will again have Division 1 leading goalkicker Shaun Payze causing problems up forward as well as J.W. Manton Medalist Nick Fisher around the ground.

Round 1 is shaping as a beauty and the match of the round will see a rematch of last year’s thrilling 1st Semi Final between Marcellin and Mazenod.

If the Marcellin defenders can keep Jayaweera quiet, they could be on the way to a first up win.

There’ll be no love lost in the Div 1 Grand Final rematch between Peninsula and NOBs-St Pat’s, with last year’s winner again being too strong here. In other matches I’ve got Old Ivanhoe snapping their losing streak against the Ashes, PEGS over the Wellers at home and the Krushers starting positively with a win over the Bears.

Notes from the offseason BEST OF THE BEST – VAFA SCOOPS MEDIA AWARD FOR BEST FOOTBALL COLUMN

Premier B Scribe Di Langton had reason to celebrate in the offseason as she took home the AFL Victoria Community Football Media Award for Best Football Column 2012. At the conclusion of the 2012 season AFL Victoria invited all leagues throughout the state to submit nominations for the AFL Victoria Community Football Media Awards for the completed season. There were 10 categories of which the VAFA were nominated in three. Whilst we missed out in the categories of Match Day Coverage and Non Match Radio show, we were happy to celebrate Di’s success. The good news is after a long summer our very own award winning scribe is back and fired up for another big season of VAFA Premier B footy. You can read Di’s prognostications for Premier B on page 4 of the Amateur Footballer.

AMATEURS IN AMSTERDAM Some of you might have seen the story in the Herald Sun Confidential Section during the summer where it was reported that Amateur Football is starting to resonate around the world. We have all read about the AFL’s push into foreign markets but little did we know that it is the VAFA that holds so much international interest. Last October AJAX currently playing in Premier B, advertised for a senior coach to 12

replace the legendary Bernie Sheehy. Club Secretary Peter Kagan managed to secure a good deal from a friend at Seek to advertise the role and whilst not a usual advertising channel for an amateur club, he decided to give it a go. The club was inundated with applications from far flung places like South Korea, Pakistan, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore so much so that he had to take the ad down. Why would applicants from these locations want THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2012

to move to Melbourne to take up the reigns of a suburban football club in the VAFA? It seems all the applicants presumed that the role was with Dutch powerhouse soccer team AJAX Amsterdam. The confusion didn’t end there though, when the VAFA tweeted the news that the successful appointment of the AJAX coach was former Old Trinity assistant Leigh McQuillen, the tweet was immediately retweeted by @UEFAnl the official UEFA twitter account for the Netherlands.

TURNING UP EARLY Still yet to complete a full season with the VAFA, Media and Communications Manager Andrew Leonard hasn’t quite learned the ropes of VAFA

office closure over the Christmas/ New Year period. Andrew had a New Year’s resolution to cycle to work and believing he was due back on Monday January 7th saddled up and arrived at VAFA HQ ready to start the 2013 year bright and early at 8am. The only problem was Andrew left his office keys on the car keys back at home, and had to wait for someone to arrive to let him into the building. By 9am a fear of being early had started to set in, and sitting on the hill at Elsternwick Park, Andrew made a few calls to learn that it wasn’t until next week that he was due back. Back on the bike for the return trip it was for Andrew and we have learnt that he decided to drive in the first few days back just to make sure there were people in the office.

COACHING CHANGES From any one season there are coaching changes at football clubs. Therefore the question remains not if there will be any changes but how many. Taking into account the two new senior teams we have into the competition this year we have calculated that there are 23 new senior coaches taking the reigns of an amateur club for 2013. Interestingly there are only 21 clubs with a new coach as two clubs (Elsternwick and Old Xaverians) continued the recent trend of dual coaching appointments.

This represents a turnover of over 31% of the head of football at each club. The biggest turnover was in Division 3 and Premier C where five clubs changed coaches coming into the 2013 season. We wish good luck to all new senior coaches plus the countless new assistants, reserves, thirds, juniors and Club XVIII coaches that are taking on a roll this year.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW CLUBS The VAFA would like to welcome to the Association the new clubs of Dragons FC (from the SFL) and Masala FC (new club) for the 2013 season.

Dragons will be playing in Division 4 of the competition after their appeal was upheld by AFL Victoria and they were granted a transfer from the SFL. The club is excited about entering the VAFA and expect to make Division 4 one of the most competitive senior sections of the competition. With the addition of Northern Blues as a senior team to Division 4 the race for the final four let alone a premiership is expected to be hotter than ever with finalists Eley Park Sharks and Point Cook having huge pre-seasons and the relegated Hawthorn are also confident of a strong year. The other new club Masala, will enter the VAFA with a team in Club XVIII Section 1. The team has its origins from the Indian Australian Rules team that competed in the International Cup, they will wear a menacing Tiger on their jumper and play in yellow and black.

CLIMB TO SUCCESS The long climb up the theoretical ladder to the finals has become one rung closer as teams complete gruelling pre-season sessions. This weekend five teams will take one step closer to a planned and wished for finals berth. For the other five, the metaphorical climb is halted by a week, playing catch up in round 2. Round 1 may not be “the be all and end all”, but all teams would take the four points on opening day.

I am not alone when I say Division 1 has an aura of excitement about it. Three new teams enter the section along with five new senior coaches taking the reins in 2013, bringing change and the unknown to the division and all will be vying for a top four spot.

Hampton Rovers will be seeking a better performance this year, having a season to forget in Premier C. With a new coach Guy Martyn at the helm, the change is looking a promising one. The return of Daniel Corp and Stuart Burggraaff and plenty of young talent, along with a replenished Boss James Reserve, the Rovers look to have an encouraging start to the season. They take on Ormond round 1 who has had a tight lipped pre-season after finishing 7th in 2012. Ormond could be the dark horse of Division 1, with a tough start to 2013, they could find themselves in serious contention for the finals.

MHSOB missed out on finals last year finishing 5th, with that they’ve gone in a new direction and appointed Luke Egan as senior coach and Kane Smith as captain for 2013. Egan brings new life to MHSOB and has made a significant impact in his short time, as has Smith who has been made captain after only one year with the club. The Unicorns look likely to push for a finals spot in 2013. Determining how a team will go 16

in a higher division is a tough task but I think Prahran Assumption will fit right in. They’re looking for their third straight promotion this season and don’t look like slowing down.

After losing the Division 2 grand final, Prahran Assumption have commenced 2013 with two big wins in the preseason. Preseason games can provide unreliable and unrealistic season predictions, a la Brisbane in the AFL, although Prahran Assumption are deemed consistent performers and I am expecting this side to push to the upper reaches of Division 1.

Another club that has remained hushed throughout preseason is Old Mentonians.

The Panthers have gone about their business quietly, bringing unknown possibilities of their performances in 2013. Bruce Waldron will again coach the Panthers who by last year’s rankings face a tough draw to start the campaign. Williamstown CYMS will visit Mentone Grammar Playing Fields round 1 with high expectations of improving on last year’s 8th spot. They have four of the first six games at home. Newly appointed senior coach Mathew Montebello has been entrusted with the job of returning Williamstown to its former glory with reassuring results in the pre-season. CY’s best and fairest winner Ben Gray has continued his 2012 form having the ball on a string throughout the practice matches. Will take some beating not to make finals in 2013.

Glen Eira, were re-promoted to Division 1, “to fill the void” as a result of a departing club in Premier C, although the Saints will be aiming to be much more than a filler in the upcoming season. With the inclusion of former MHSOB coach Paul Dodd, Glen Eira will be looking to impress, commencing at home taking on Old Geelong. Beating Old Geelong will be no easy feat as one of last season’s preliminary finalists are eyeing off promotion as a possible section favourite. They are looking to fly past last year’s 13 wins effort and put a stranglehold on the division. If Callum Wood’s half century of goals last season is anything to go by, this year could promise a high scoring affair for Old Geelong.

The 2012 Division 2 premiers Bulleen Templestowe are at home to Division 1 finalists Whitefriars and it shapes as the match of the round. Bulleen Templestowe were in Division 1 only two years ago and will not want to fall victim to the dreaded premiership hangover.

Returning coach, Anthony Palmer will be pushing the team for that round one victory, proving the Bullants belong in this section.

Whitefriars will aim to rain on the Bullants’ parade as the Friars aspire to march back into the finals for a third consecutive year. The Friars open the season with only two home games first half dozen. This looms as a potential opportunity to put their mark on the section as Whitefriars look to improve on last year’s form and be vying for promotion.

The journey up the figurative ladder has well and truly begun. Pre-season is over and it’s time for the formidable assignment of picking round one winners, my selections are Hampton Rovers, MHSOB, Williamstown CYMS, Old Geelong and Whitefriars.

OPENING ACT The days are getting shorter, the air is crisper, fog starting to settle in and the grass damper.

Autumn has rolled around and there is a buzz around Melbourne, finally after an arduous and demanding pre-season...Footy is Back!

Emmaus St Leos had a disappointing 2012 in Division 2, only managing three wins and subsequently finished ninth. Granted a stay in Division 2 due to the Rupertswod departure, Emmaus St Leos will be looking for stark improvement in 2013. The first goal will be to consolidate their position in Division 2 and try and get on the positive side of the win loss ledger. Emmaus St Leo’s do not have an easy start to the season with an opening match against last year’s Division 3 Premiers, Yarra Valley Old Boys.

Ivanhoe start Division 2 coming off an excellent 2012 season finishing second with 15 wins, playing off in the Div 3 Grand Final and seem poised to continue that form in 2013. Plenty of player movement in the off-season, both in and out of the club has Ivanhoe believing they have improved their list. Pre-season began in November and with miles in the legs and a good hit out against neighbours Park Orchards, there are positive signs for the season ahead commencing with a home game against Therry Penola.

Monash Gryphons pre-season hype surrounded the recruitment of high-profile, ex-AFL player Russell Robertson adding class and the occasional “hanger” to their forward line. The former Demon will be one of the high profile players in the VAFA this year, but will not be available for all games. After finishing fifth last year, just missing out on finals, the recruitment of Robertson has the Gyrphons well placed to make a tilt at the top four, if not greater glory.

Old Eltham had a great 2012 season albeit finishing prematurely with a loss to Prahran Assumption in the preliminary final. After a few solid seasons in Division 2 without achieving the ultimate glory, Old Eltham appointed new senior coach Jason McBean during the offseason. McBean was a highly respected player and coach in the Northern Football League and hopes to lead the club to greater success in 2013.

Old Paradians were fourth placed in Division 2 in 2012, being knocked out by Prahran Assumption in the first week of finals, Paradians will want sustained and then improved form in 2013. The club will focus on playing finals again but aim to earn a double chance that will give provide a realistic chance of jumping that final hurdle of winning the premiership.

A practice match against Therry Penola would have provided the club a gauge of how they will shape up against Monash Gryphons in Round 1.

St John’s Old Collegians were relegated from Division 1 and have appointed new coach Steve Ware to turn the club’s fortunes around in 2013.

With renewed depth at the club, from the return of premiership players and the recruitment of young talent the JOCS easily accounted for Emmaus St Leos in their first practice match.

Coming off a solid pre-season, which included a camp to Venus Bay, St John’s are in good form to face St Mary’s Salesian at Ferndale Reserve on 13 April.

South Melbourne Districts had a solid preseason and are quietly confident about their 2013 prospects. A few players have left the club but there has been noticeable improvement over the pre-season from a number of players.

Eighth last year they are looking to improve.

This was evident with three solid quarters against Hampton Rovers in a practice match.

Whilst eventually overrun by a stronger side, enough quality was shown. Will gun for a flying start away at Old Eltham.

St Mary’s Salesian finished seventh last year with six wins. After being in Division 2 for a few years this seems the year the club must improve. Through their scholarship program they have recruited a few payers from the Northern Territory Football League that are exciting prospects. With a strong showing against Waverley Blues (EFL Div 2) they look in good shape for 2013.

Yarra Valley Old Boys 2012 Division 3 premiers have added to their list over the summer, recruiting a dozen players, including dynamic and rugged midfielder Ryan Amos, who joins his brother and Bushranger’s cult figure James.

The club changed long-time captain Chris Beal after leading the club to premiership success and appointed Michael Wines as their new skipper. Grand Final success and promotion to Division 2, all signs lead to a successful 2013 starting against Emmaus St Leos away.

Therry Penola finished mid-table in 2012 but with new senior coach and favourite son Dennis Castaldi at the helm expect them to be a big improver. The pre-season focus has been on fitness, strength and basic skill work. In practice matches against Bulleen-Templestowe and Prahran Assumption, the players showed promising signs in adapting to the new game plan. After playing off the Grand Final in 2011, Therry will be looking to reach that level again after a disappointing 2012.

A NEW DAWN, A NEW DAY The dawning of a new season is upon us. Whilst the AFL has been plagued by talk of tanking, recreational and performance enhancing drug use and financial inequality, the VAFA remains a very content amateur league with thousands of enthusiastic players, officials and supporters.

The season marches through three different seasons: the last days of autumn, the bitter winter and the hazy days of spring until we reach the middle of September and crown the premier. In Division 3 it appears we commence without a clear favourite after the departure of the extremely talented yet rather panicky finals participants Yarra Valley and the true blue boys from Ivanhoe.

It has been a long preseason, from the November running sessions, the December and January delusion that the beers won’t hurt your waist line and the February wakeup call where the 2K time trials drain you of every ounce of energy are unfortunately a key part of our football life cycle.

March is about promise and potential before April arrives and we start to see if it was all worth it.

One of the big questions that I have considered over the pre-season is whether UHS-VU can win the premiership. Last season, their performance in the semi final against Aquinas was heroic as they turned around an 8 goal deficit to win by a single kick. Some smart recruiting and players of the ilk of Nicky Rowland and Captain Kirk himself should hold them in great stead for the season ahead. Albert Park is a consistent mid table side who require a real injection of youth to become Division 3 challengers. They deserve admiration for remaining competitive in one of the toughest regions of Melbourne in regard to retaining and gaining new players. However today it will be UHS-VU by 22.

South Mornington has entered Division 3 in turmoil after an historic season in 2012. They’ve lost their coach, many key players including goal kicking machine Jesse Albrecht, and according to the club transfer papers, have barely gained a single player. However, they maintain a very important advantage. LONG DISTANCE TRAVEL. The lads from Swinny are also from Division 4 with former UHS star Ryan Keeley joining gun players Jackson Manning and Ben Higgins. Swinburne suffered a heavy loss to Kew in their final practice match but could still prove a capable side. A toss of the coin for mine! Swinburne by 1.

The Snakes underachieved last season on the field however with their impeccable dress sense and strong recruiting, they will finish top four. They’ve suffered a few setbacks with the loss of big man Seb Angus along with key mids Luke Walsh and Ben Ryan. Nevertheless, with Sean O’Connor and Sam Brown returning and the arrival of Luke Carland at Centre Half Back, Elsternwick will not bother the Snakes despite being another consistent mid table side. I don’t expect the ‘Wick to feature in September but if Baz Prior and Lachlan Bedingfield can play full seasons, they may surprise. Richmond Central by 26 Willie Bee’s Clive Waterhouse Match of the Round Aquinas, my prediction for top of the table after the minor rounds, played in two heart-stopping finals last season. and the other was the catalyst for an infamous Mad Monday for the Ringwood lads. They are a young side with big ambitions and the news of an influx of EFL players being added to the fold only strengthens their claims to feature in the latter part of September. However, La Trobe Uni is one of the great unknowns this season. They are the only team entering from the wrong side of the tracks (Division 2), although a strong win over Yarra Valley in their final practice match is an impressive early indicator, having said that Aquinas by 10.

X-men star ‘Dimma’ Dimakopolous had another big year for the jesuits in 2012 and the talented Van Dam brothers will be keen to push for a spot in the top rungs this year. But do I smell an upset?

No. Power House was the worst performed side in Division 3 last season and with a new coaching team should be more competitive this year. They also have a large contingent of Irish footballers who are notoriously quick learners.

Still, St Francis Xavier pushed Aquinas in their practice match and will be too crisp, SFX by 45.

The Bears have a formidable record at the home, winning 8 and drawing one there last year and have had a very productive off season.

They’ve managed to retain League B&F runner up Ethan Roberts whilst adding more midfield depth to surround him. However, premierships are not won in March and losing Chad Watts to the fluorescent lights of Las Vegas may trouble ‘Beaser’ Aitken. From all reports, Old Westbourne has seemingly recovered from their disastrous 2012 but will need something special to threaten the Bears at home. Judging upon their transfer list, much needed youth has been added to assist in the climb up Division 2.

Today though it will be Kew by 32.

‘LET THE GAMES BEGIN’ At last, the footy season has returned and Division 4 is shaping up for an excellent season in 2013. The introduction of two new teams adds intrigue to the section, leaving us to ponder an exciting 2013 season.

Eley Park Sharks: After an impressive preliminary final appearance in 2012, the Sharks will be hoping to go one better in 2013 and challenge for the flag. The Sharks kick off their season against the Magpies at Whitehorse Reserve, and are looming as the team to beat in 2013.

Point Cook: With Saltwater Reserve as their new home ground, the Bulldogs will want to create a home fortress to defend against the teams making the trek down the freeway. A semi-final appearance in 2012 will hopefully lead to bigger and better things in 2013. With a strong youth program and the reigning league best and fairest in Jordan Lampi expect the Bulldogs to be firing come September.

North Brunswick: A fifth place finish in 2012 should act as motivation for North Brunswick this year. It is a realistic aim to strive for the top four this season. The Bulls have recruited heavily, poaching several players from other clubs as they look towards establishing depth within their squad. An obvious rivalry with West Brunswick adds some spice to the competition.

Manningham Cobras: Word from senior coach Anthony Pezzimenti is that the Cobras expect to play finals after a promising mid-table finish in 2012. They are aiming to do so with the development of several new leaders on the track following the departure of former cocaptain Stephen Rose. A focus on competitive drills during the pre-season will hopefully lead to a solid first up showing against Chadstone in round 2 as they have an extra week off in Round 22

1 with a bye first up.

West Brunswick: The Magpies have only one thing on their mind after a mediocre 2012 season, competitiveness. The ‘Pies’ believe they need to claim scalps against the better sides in order to make that leap into finals contention.

The competitive drive has been led by the teams leaders, who will need to have the boys primed for a tough first round encounter away to the Sharks.

Box Hill North: A first round away clash against Mt Lilydale will prove a stern test for Box Hill North, The Demons will be looking to make their climb up the ladder by knocking off a fellow up and coming team. Winning only five games in 2012 should spur Box Hill North on to greater achievements in 2013. They will be looking at climbing towards the six to eight win mark and improve on last years performance.

Mt Lilydale: An interesting first round encounter against Box Hill North at home will display the development of Mt Lilydale AFC. Given they finished very close to Box Hill North in 2012. With no major player transfers to report, Mt Lilydale will rely on a similar team to 2012 with the influx of more youth, however they will be hoping their fortunes change after a tough 2012 season, in which they only won four games.

Dave Cafarella, the club are ready to make that climb. Several senior players from 2012 have departed the club, which has lead to an influx of new blood. Unfortunately a pre-season injury to seasoned regular Adrain Steve has put him in doubt for the 2013 season, but Cafarella remains optimistic of the possibilities of his side in 2013.

Dragons: The Dragons enter the VAFA for their inaugural season, making the transfer from the Southern Football League. With a tough first round encounter away to the Hawks, Dragons will be intent on delivering a first round upset, and a slice of history. Whilst the Dragons may take time to come to grips with the standard of football in Division 4, they shape as a dangerous side in the 2013 season.

Hawthorn: After relegation from Division 3, the Hawks will be keen to bounce straight back and take all before them in Division 4. A strong season looms for the Hawks, who have recruited very well and will be looking to display some eye-catching footy early on in the season.

Although a first round home game against competition newcomers Dragons is a tough first up assignment for the Hawks.

Northern Blues: After a few seasons in the under 19’s and Premier C Thirds, the ‘Blues’ become an official senior team in Division 4 for the 2013 season, and will be keen to cap off their promotion with a first round win against North Brunswick at Preston City Oval. A stern test against the Bulls will be a perfect gauge on how the Blues might shape up in 2013.

CLUB WAREHOUSE RISING STAR 2012 Club Warehouse have been a sponsor of the VAFA’s Rising Star Award for a number of years and in 2013, they have renewed their sponsorship of this prestigious award. Each week a player under the age of 21 is nominated as the week’s Club Warehouse Rising Star. The winner of 2013 Rising Star will then be selected from the weekly winners throughout the season.

The award has a great track record in identifying young football talent playing within the VAFA, with many going on to receive higher honours.

The 2012 winner of the Club Warehouse Rising Star was Collegians’ midfield/forward Lachlan Ferguson who will play with Collingwood’s VFL side in 2013.

Ferguson joins an illustrious list that includes one player (Dan Nicholson) that went on to play

in the AFL, two Woodrow Medallists and many Big V representative players.

The winner of the award receives a trophy with the winning club to receive $1000 from Club Warehouse. Good luck to all the young players who are nominated for the Club Warehouse Rising Star award in 2013.

5 YEARS AGO – 2008 In A Section, the closest match of the day was at Brighton Beach between Old Brighton and Old Scotch. The lead changed numerous times before the Cardinals prevailed 15.9 to 12.19 and the Tonners’ inaccuracy was certainly costly. Best – Hildebrandt, Houlihan, Thompson, Kennedy, Eva, Aurel-Smith (Scotch) and Perrett, Ainley, M Gadsden, Jakobi, Mentiplay (Brighton).

10 YEARS AGO – 2003 Old Haileybury, with significant additions to their senior list, were far too strong for Old Ivanhoe in the opening A Section round, 19.20 to 13.10.

The Bloods led throughout the game and only some inaccuracy in front of goal prevented an even bigger margin. Best – Jenke, Brooks, Barker, O’Farrell (5), Corrigan (3), Bourke (OH) and J Weddle (3), Hope, Young, Spoor, Bereza, Roberts (OI). Senior coaches were Mick Dwyer (OH) and Paul Fahey (OI). Field Umpires were Richard Eastwood and Anthony Damen.

20 YEARS AGO – 1993 Ormond ‘s convincing win over Old Brighton placed them at the top of the A Section ladder.

The Tonners started well but faded quickly under typical Ormond pressure and run out of the backline. Best – Jobling, Orr (3), Sebo, Grace, M McDonald (5), B Connell (Ormond) and Hendrie, Mercer, Lennox (3), Brook, Phillips, Anderson (OB).

Field umpires were Richard Simon and Wayne Hinton. Respective senior coaches were Mike McArthur-Allen and Mark Parker.

25 YEARS AGO – 1988 It was a thriller in A Section between Collegians and North Old Boys with an outstanding first quarter by Collegians (10 goals straight) to NOBS’ 3.4. NOBS gradually made up ground and had snuck their noses in front by three quarter time 14.8 to 14.3. A great last quarter ensued before Collegians rallied sufficiently to win 17.8 to 16.9, a highly entertaining start to the season. Best players – Williams, K Parsons, Schober, Hibbins, Roberts (6), Conron (Collegians) and Boyd, C Hibbert (3), Alevras, Curulli, Millett, Egan (NOBS).

A Section field umpires were – Andrew McCrae, Cameron Swale, Paul Cherry, Kevin Segota, Ken 42

Coughlan, Greg Hardiman, Mark Bushfield, Steve Clinch, Justin Toohey and Steve McCarthy.

35 YEARS AGO – 1978 The start of the season saw two field umpires in A Section for the first time. It was to be a season of trial for the two umpire system. The introduction of the ‘interchange’ system in the previous season had proved so successful, it was decided in this season to add a further refinement; it was no longer necessary for interchanges to be effected during the time on periods or for the umpires to be notified directly. The home club was to provide a suitably attired ‘steward’ to whom the Club runners would pass on detail of any interchange. Reigning premiers in A Section, De La Salle, comfortably won their first encounter against University Blacks 15.10 to 10.15. Best players – Beddoe (4), Groves, Dienne, Connolly, Nugent, Maher (DLS) and Birch, Fisher, Holland, Allanson, Gill, Curtis (Blacks).

45 YEARS AGO – 1968 The season started with the announcement that the VAFA had secured a long-term lease of Elsternwick Park with plans for greatly improved ground facilities and amenities over a period of years. The admission of Old Mentonians to E Section brought the number of competing teams to 123. Reigning premiers in A Section, Uni Blacks, had a good start against Coburg to run out winners 14.6 to 9.13. Best players – Mitchell, Shackleton, Hunt, McGregor, Solly (3), Costello (Uni Blacks) and Galleson, Ebbage, Jebb, Condron, Merrick, Pearson (Coburg).

55 YEARS AGO – 1958 George McTaggart, Editor of The Amateur Footballer, anticipated further success for the VAFA in its second season of a ‘permanent home’ at No 2 Oval, Olympic Park. George also predicted a busy season for football administrators generally with the Australian National Football Council (ANFC) staging a carnival in Melbourne later that year to celebrate the centenary of ‘Australian Football’. In A Section, reigning premiers Collegians, immediately went top of the ladder with a strong win over Uni Blues, 18.14 to 7.4.

Best players – Mansfield, Bennett (9), Sunderland, G Daff, McDonald, R Daff (Collegians) and Shaw, Howdern, Langley, Hayden, Woodhouse (5), McMillan (Uni Blues).

U19 Premier with Kristy Slater @KristySlater

U19s is the most difficult level of football to predict.

Without detailed analysis of each side and how many of their bottom age players are eligible to go around again it is hard to determine who will be strongest. In Premier U19s eight of last years teams return with the usual suspects likely to feature in finals again.

On pure weight of numbers the sides with two U19 teams tend to be more prominent and given their recent histories expect De La Salle

and Old Xaverians to be thereabouts again.

The new teams, Old Brighton – premiers in U19 Section 2 and St Kevin’s enter the section and if they have retained their players from last season then will certainly be competitive. For that reason it is safest to go with the home team when making my round 1 selections. We will hopefully determine more by next week.

New players and teams, predictions are fraught but I am prepared to have a go. Werribee Predicted: 1st Seeking to avenge loss to Caulfield in the 2012 elimination final & many of last year’s gun U18s should play. Caulfield Grammarians 2nd Runners-up of Sect 2 will be thereabouts again this year. Parkdale Vultures 3rd Won 2012 U19 South and have added several players to their side for 2013.

Collegians 4th Premiers in Sect 3 in 2012 will

push for top four. Mazenod 5th Heartbreaking loss to Collegians in the Grand Final will fuel desire in 2013. Fitzroy 6th Down from Premier with only 2 wins, should be more competitive here. University Blacks 7th In the same boat as Fitzroy, should excel at this level. Old Trinity 8th Competitive in Sect 2 last year and will hope to improve. Old Carey 9th Proud club should improve after a disappointing 2012. Marcellin 10th Finished last in Sect 2 with only 2 wins, will be more competitive this year.

U19 Section 3 with Darren Dawson

There appear to be some interesting contests to kick off the Section 3 season, but the highlight looks to be the re-match of last year’s North section grand-finallists Old Geelong and Williamstown. Both teams should be thereabouts this season, but I am tipping Willy to draw first blood at the Fearon. Word has it that Whitefriars have enjoyed good numbers on the track over summer, and they should prove too strong for the visiting Ajax, who are 44

somewhat of an unknown quantity.

Haileybury and Xaverians, two ammos powerhouses, face off at Caulfield in what is sure to be a keenly fought contest. I suspect the Bloods may just end up with their noses in front at the end. To continue today’s theme of plumping for the home teams, I reckon Northern Blues will get over the line against La Trobe; and in what should be a cracker of a game, Old Camberwell to prevail over PEGS. Last year’s preliminary finalists Ivanhoe will battle MHSOB at Melbourne High.

The home side will be after a big improvement from 2012 after winning just one game. Both teams are unknown quantities heading into Saturday.

Old Ivanhoe will host Old Westbourne, with the ‘Hoes looking forward to a big season. Both sides have good numbers, with Sam Wilcox, Nick Kenyon-Smith and Callum Matheson tipped to star for the ‘Hoes, while ruckman Harley

Tunnicliffe vital for the Warriors. Finalists Therry Penola will duel St Mary’s Salesian, who have moved from the U19 South. Ben Andrews will lead St Mary’s on Saturday, while the Lions were competitive in their last praccy match.

St Bernard’s were last year’s Sect. 3 wooden spooners, and will hope their Under 18’s talent emerges when they meet Old Paradians at home. North Melbourne premiership player Ian Fairley is a big in as Paradians’ coach.

Monash Blues have an exciting new crop of Uni students for Saturday’s early morning clash with De La Salle. The Blues had some promising praccy match results, while 2012 runners-up De La had a thumping win last week.

Hampton Rovers will trek out to Peninsula on a high with a new coaching panel, and hopefully a full side. The Pirates should continue from a successful 2012, where they narrowly missed a Grand Final berth. Beaumaris and Old Mentonians will battle at Mentone Grammar. The Sharks will be looking to avoid consecutive wooden spoons, with the OM’s another unknown quantity.

I’M BACK! Leah: Macca, I’m back! Couldn’t take it that you were with another man and I’m sure neither could AD. However my presence will only be only kept to this page and from outside of the boundary line, so clubs and players can breathe a sigh relief that for the second year in a row I will not be blowing the whistle. So I thank the peacock, Cam Davidson for holding down the fort.

Macca: Great to have you back with the poison pen Leah, but sad to see that your foot injury is keeping you away from the action on the field this year. We look forward to your input to this column and of course your ongoing support to the up and coming umpires in your coaching role.

WHAT’S NEW? Well there are a couple of new interpretations this year.

1. The separation of ruckmen at stoppages, ruckmen must be 1 metre apart prior to the ball leaving the umpires hand. Umpires will constantly be reminding the ruckman of this.

Seems to have been going well during the practice matches.

2. Forceful contact below the knees, a player who makes forceful contact below the knees of his opponent (this does not apply to smothers with the hands or arms).

3. Dragging or pushing the ball back under an opponent; any player who drags or pushes the ball back under their opponent will be penalised.

Also the umpires at some stage will be decked out in new uniforms and a new colour! However that will be happening during the season.

INJURY NEWS Sad to hear of the serious knee injury to our president Dan Silfo who went down after a collision with a player a few weeks ago. Dan is still hobbling around but hopes to re-join us 52

on the field late in the year.Also, after a bit of a health scare, our Fitness Coach, the evergreen Wayne (Chuck) Hinton was laid up for a while with a kidney problem. He’s on the mend now and we’ll see him back out on the park very soon. He’s still managing to flog us on the training track though.

SPORTS SHORTS We welcome back Dave Anselmi after a stint with the VFL but he obviously couldn’t remember what he’d done with his old VAFA uniform last weekend. He arrived at the ground only to realise he had no shorts in the bag. Luckily his running partner Jayde Daly was able to lend Dave her spare pair. Yes, we know, so many lines we can’t use there. But thanks to Jayde for saving the day.

SEASON STARTS Last week was the last of the practice matches and now the real stuff happens, during the practice matches some umpires were given the opportunity to impress selectors by running in sections they hope to aspire to. Let’s hope that they took on board the hard work required to umpire these games, set goals to achieve higher sections or better still showed selectors that they can handle the challenge given to them.

WELCOME BACK This season sees a variety of clubs joining the Under 18 competition in 2013 for the first time.

Collegians enter a side into the U18 competition and will be out to prove a point in 2013. Kew are also new to the competition. With talented juniors will they be the surprise packet for 2013? Oakleigh were last year’s premiers will no doubt be looking to go back to back in 2013. Point Cook’s young Bulldogs are another new team to join the competition for 2013.

Glenn McAlpine is coach and they are built for success. Richmond Central are the final new side to join the U18s. Many players on the track should translate to a stellar debut at this level.

St Bernards are back following on from their competitive 2012 season, finishing top four, they have a strong chance to contend for higher honours this year. St Mary’s Salesian proved to be a competitive side in 2012 winning 10 of 16 games. Expect improvement on this record.

UHS – VU: A season to forget in 2012 winning no games. On field success could be aided by

the approved rule of allowing four overage players? Werribee were last year’s runners-up will be pushing hard for that premiership cup in 2013. The Tigers fell short on the last day but will be a force in 2013. Williamstown CYMS struggled to find the winning formula in 2012, will aim to turn it around in 2013. I wish all the clubs the very best for the season ahead.

3 SECTIONS, 22 CLUBS, IT’S GAME ON Another season begins today with the Club XVIII divided into three sections comprised of eight, eight and six teams. We welcome the new clubs to the competition in Masala and Dragons and hope that their tuck shops will put on some of the food from the cultures that these clubs were founded from.

We also welcome the new teams to the competition in 2013 with Fitzroy, Hampton Rovers, Whitefriars, Emmaus St Leo’s, Oakleigh and Ormond. We have lost some teams too from the competition and we say thank you.

To select winners today is an almost impossible task for many as it will be their first real hitout since last season. With fixtures only relased in the last week teams have had little time to scout their opposition in prcatice matches so as we commence the season I wish a general good luck to all sides.

SECTION 1 University based teams have the reputation of starting slowly as they introduce new players.

The home ground advantage prompts me to select Prahran Assumption to defeat Monash Blues. Two of the promoted sides clash at Como Park when Fitzroy travel to take on Old Geelong who will unfurl their 2012 flag and will be victorious on the day. Perennial finalists De La Salle and Old Xaverians at Darling Park.

In most of their clashes over many seasons, Old Xaverians have been superior and today I forcast another crocodile victory. St Bernards travel to meet Oakleigh and I believe the home side will take the points.

SECTION 2 Hawthorn who have set the minor round pace for some seasons and they travel to take on Emmaus St Leo’s. The Hawks will be strong enough and victorious. Bulleen Templestowe host Therry Penola, who are always competitive, but the Ants will take the points at home.

Ormond take the long journey out west to Williamstown where the prevailing winds can prove a nuisance to visiting teams and therefore I see the CY’s to start their season off with a win.

Hampton Rovers travel to meet Whitefrairs. Both these sides return to the section after a season break and at home Whitefriars will be to strong.

SECTION 3 Richmond Central will host new side competition Masala. It seems the snakes have gained some extra experience and as a result should field a competitive side. With Masala’s President (my namesake) I await their performance with interest, however, I favour Richmond Centrals to win. Eley Park should defeat UHS/VU whose two season involvement with the Club XVIII competition has not brought them much success on the field. The final game between the other new side the Dragons and Kew whose numbers were not great in 2012, I select the Dragons given their enthusiam and home ground advantage.

THIS IS WHAT WE PLAY FOR

PREMIERSHIP TABLE OFFERS SOME SURPRISES In the Premier Grand Final Record last September the words “This is what we play for” were emblazoned across the front cover. The words were sitting underneath an image of the LA Adamson Cup, presented to the winner of the Premier Grand Final. However the VAFA is more than a football competition. Whilst the players may not recognise it whilst playing, the relationships they form and networking they are doing by playing in this magnificent competition, will form the basis of friends, business opportunities and general enjoyment for the rest of their lives.

Ignoring all the fluffy stuff, the ultimate goal when it comes to football is to play in a premiership. They are notoriously hard to win, and all clubs if they don’t already, should cherish every single one of them. This year 74 clubs will field 251 teams across 26 football competitions of the VAFA. That means another 26 teams will finish the year as Premiers. A senior premiership holds a special place at a club and rightly so, but the VAFA rewards and celebrates the premiership players of Thirds, Reserves, Club XVIII and under age premierships (mind you so too do the players and people involved in that team).

Some clubs will win multiple premierships in a season as Old Geelong did last year when they collected three flags from their four teams. Three quarters of the club celebrated, however they missed out on the senior flag and that should drive Frank Dunell and his team in 2013.

On the opposite page are two tables showing the total number of Premierships won by current VAFA clubs. The table on the left shows senior premiership wins and the table on the right shows total premiership wins. It’s no surprise that the oldest clubs have won more premierships.

Of the top 10 for senior premierships only De La Salle have played in the VAFA less than 60 years.

Which means their third place on the total club premierships table even more impressive. St Bernard’s celebrate their 50th year this season and 60

are the youngest club inside the top 10 of total club premierships.

‘You have got to be in it to win it’ is a well known saying and when it comes to chasing premiership glory the clubs with the most teams tend to be near the top of the total Premierships table. De La Salle regularly field two U19 teams and have great depth at that level. Their recent record in U19s has been excellent with them claiming six of the last nine premierships in U19 Premier.

Their U19 Premier 2012 premiership takes their U19 premiership wins tally to 10. However, De La Salle sit one behind Ormond for junior flags. The ‘Monders claimed 10 U19 premierships prior to 1986 before claiming an 11th in 2005. Ormond have also saluted on the last day the most times in reserve level competition and comfortably lead all-comers with 19 reserve grade premierships.

Interestingly De La Salle sit second in this category too. De La jumped to 12 reserve flags when they won the Premier Reserve Section premiership last year, leaving the runner-up on the day Old Xaverians to share third place with Uni Blacks on 11. Old Xaverians have an unbelievable record when it comes to Club XVIII football. They have dominated the competition since it’s inception and sit comfortably out in front with 18 Clubies flags. The next closest are Old Brighton, St Bernard’s and PEGS all sitting on four.

Longevity on the competition doesn’t always bring success. Albert Park (out of ANZ Bank) are still chasing their first senior premiership although they do have three reserve flags in their rooms.

Peninsula Old Boys are also missing a senior pennant and added a seventh senior runners up finish to their resume last year, however they too have had some reserve grade success.

The other clubs still waiting for a premiership have all been in the VAFA for less than 15 years. Good luck to all 74 clubs chasing the ultimate in football this year because after all, this is what we play for.
