welcome
Welcome from VAFA President Michael Hazell Congratulations to players from both the Victorian Amateur Football Association and the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country combined football leagues for their selection in today’s representative games. Congratulations also to the coaches, volunteers and staff of both organisations who have helped make this day a reality.
their careers. The drive required to bring the best out of yourself in a more demanding environment of a one off match or series brings these games to a new level. The change of focus from week to week club competition to the intensity of a representative match breathes new energy into each participant, driving the players to greater heights..
For the VAFA, this day is truly one of the highlights of our calendar. For players, it is an opportunity to test yourself against the best of the best. An opportunity to challenge yourself in front of the broader community. And for most players, it is an opportunity to play at a level which is as close as they might get to AFL standard. If you are involved, these are opportunities to be cherished.
I was reading with interest a quote from a current rugby player who said that “the magic of the Lions supersedes all prejudices and appears to bring the best out of all the players involved”. I think this nicely encapsulates what representative games at any level are all about. Good luck to everyone involved today.
To ensure the continued relevance and prominence of today’s games I think it is vital to remember the real reasons why these representative games are important and must be maintained. Notions of the old VFL state of origin and the history of the Big V jumper, whilst important to representative football, are secondary to the need to give our young men in the community an avenue to aspire to reach their absolute potential. It is worth noting that right now we have two very big representative fixtures taking place in Australia, namely the Rugby Union (British Lions Tour) and Rugby League (State of Origin). I watch with awe the passion and commitment displayed by the players picked for these games. It would not matter whether there were 100 or 100,000 people in the crowd, the players would still be treating the match as one of the defining points in
Leigh Fletcher will be a key mover for the Prem B- Div 4 side today

welcome
Welcome from AFL Victoria Country General Manager Grant Williams On behalf of AFL Victoria I would like to congratulate players from both the Victorian Amateur Football Association and WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country’s affiliated leagues for being selected in their respective sides. As was the case in the 2011 when these representative teams last played, we are expecting three great games of football, played in terrific spirit. When the Brian Molony Cup was last awarded it was the VAFA who prevailed over AFL Victoria Country No.1 by six points. While the country boys were big winners in the Challenge Cup (AFL Victoria Country No.2 v VAFA Prem B – Div 4), both sides will be desperate to secure bragging rights this year. Sunday’s games mark 20 years that the two competitions have met bi-annually at senior level. Prior to that matches were played irregularly, with U19 matches being played annually. At U19 level, AFL Victoria Country (formerly the VCFL) has triumphed in the past two encounters with strong wins in 2011 and 2012. With AFL recruiters now searching far and wide to secure the best talent, players from all sides have the chance to possibly take their footy to a new level, just as Matt Taberner did last year. After being named best on ground in the U19 match for the VCFL, Taberner, from Myrtleford, was eventually selected by Fremantle in the NAB AFL Rookie Draft and only a few weeks ago made his debut at the elite level. Other players to also have gone on to the AFL from these matches include Sam Dunnel (Old Melburnians/ VAFA – St. Kilda), Ariel Steinberg (Imperials/Sunraysia FNL/VCFL - Essendon) and Daniel Nicholson (University Blues/VAFA – Melbourne). Regardless of who wins on Sunday, representative matches are wonderful opportunity for players to test their abilities at higher standard and an experience that they will remember long after their playing days are over. WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country’s three sides are selected after the WorkSafe Country Championships which were held in May 2
and saw 36 leagues compete. Our WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country coaches, Peter Knights (No.1 side) John Cossar (No.2) and Damian Sexton (U19) and their experienced team of selectors have been hard at work selecting each of their sides. We are delighted to have the service of the three experienced coaches and we wish them the best in leading their chargers on Sunday. We would like to thank the many volunteers, including selectors and support staff who help make this event possible. In particular, we thank Michael Hazell (President) and Michael Sholly (CEO) of the VAFA for hosting the matches and the respective Operations Managers, Tim Noonan (VAFA) and Gerard Ryan (WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country) for coordinating the day. We would also like to congratulate the umpires from WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country’s V/Line Academy that have been selected to officiate in the three matches. The V/Line Academy was established to develop and coach talented young umpires and this experience at representative level will be an important step in their on-going development. In closing we wish to particularly thank WorkSafe Victoria for their wonderful support of AFL Victoria Country and its associated programs, GrainCorp for their sponsorship of the AFL Victoria Country No.2 team and EnergySafe Victoria for their continued support of the country U19 program. All the very best and may the best teams win.

The Senior VAFA team after their win in 2011
Continuing a tradition The history between these two teams dates back to the early 1980’s when representative football was big and players threw themselves into contests as if it was a matter of life and death. That the VAFA and AFL Victoria Country (formerly the VCFL) still put representative football on a pedestal is testament to the way these two sides have battled against each other in recent times. The players and coaches of both teams must be applauded for entering these contests with the intensity and focus that they do. The past three meetings at senior level have produced margins of 6, 4 and 1 point respectively. Whilst the Country lead the VAFA 7-6 in the senior head to head ledger today’s match is the sixth meeting 12
of the teams in Melbourne and only the second time the sides have played at the Junction Oval. The VAFA currently hold the Brian Molony Cup courtesy of their win in Shepparton in 2011, however AFL Victoria Country hold the trophies for the Premier B – Division 4 versus the Number 2 Country team and the U19 trophies. Whatever your allegiance today, there is no doubt that this is a contest we can continue to look forward to in years to come as both the VAFA and the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country administrations, players, coaches and supporters all see the benefits of representative football.
