ONCE MORE UNTO THE BREACH… This will be our 111th season of VAFA football. Not many sporting organisations can boast survival over such a long period. More importantly, few have prospered for as long and continued to play a meaningful role in the lives of so many people. We should all be very proud of this. The VAFA continues to be an association admired greatly by the wider football community. What stands out is the quality and depth of football talent, the size of our competition, the diversity within our community, the standards of behaviour right across the Board, the respect both for and within our Association and above all else our players “play for the love of the game”.

an invitational U18 team played in New Zealand in October and won both of its games against a New Zealand U20 representative team. Earlier this month we played two games against the Eastern Football League: our C-D4 team went down by 17 points and our Senior team came from behind to win in a hard fought contest. All of the players representing these teams are to be congratulated for their commitment. Twenty-eight of our clubs had players participate on this day and I thank all of our clubs for continuing to support the Big V program. The Board has just completed a 3 year Strategic plan for the VAFA. The broad strategic goals associated with this plan include the following: Competition Integrity - To vigorously uphold the “Amateur” ethos and provide a safe and respectful community environment.

I am really proud of our current Administration and Board as well as previous Administrations and Boards for their role in shaping our Association into what it is today.

Football Growth and Development - To maximise participation and develop the frameworks to ensure the highest possible standard of football is attained.

Similarly I am very proud of the role our clubs have played. We continue to be aided by high quality people who serve their clubs in an honorary capacity and I take this opportunity to again thank all of the volunteers who generously give their time. If you get the opportunity, please go out of your way to thank the volunteers at your own club. It will make their job just that bit easier knowing the time they commit to their clubs and to the VAFA is truly valued.

Commercial - To develop the commercial and administrative operation for the benefit of the competition.

Much has happened since the end of the last football season and one area I would like to highlight is our representative football calendar. In October of last year, we sent a senior VAFA team overseas. I was really proud of the fact that our twenty-one players represented fifteen different clubs across five sections. Additionally

Facilities - To ensure all grounds and amenities reach the relevant approved AFL standard. Our vision, mission and values remain unchanged but there are many new initiatives designed to assist us in meeting these strategic goals. The plan will bring a sharper focus to the activities of the Board and Administration and I look forward to sharing with you the progress made. Good luck to all of our clubs. I wish all of you a successful and rewarding season. Bruno Conti President

NO ROOM AT THE INN? Collegians’ supremo Wayne Dyer hugged the LA Adamson Cup for the final time at the Lions’ season launch last week before returning it to headquarters. Now the Purples begin the defense of their crown and are the favourites to be prowling around the dais again in five months time. But they’ll have plenty of opposition. However, I don’t see much room at the top to accommodate the aspirations of the improvers, with Colls, Xavs and Blues very difficult to shift from the four. The Brindisians appear vulnerable despite a massive home ground advantage. I fancy De La Salle to take their September spot. In fact, I am predicting (albeit, with no great confidence) that De La will chalice and end the drought that began in 1992. So let’s look at the ten contenders: CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS: (Last year, 1st in Premier B.) Despite tearing up Premier C and Premier B over three seasons, the Fieldsmen refuse to budge from their “wait and see: one week at a time” approach. To watch them in full flight is to get quite excited about their quality, but the Navy and Whites stay calm. Steven Lawrence has proven a fine mentor thus far and in their first season since 1986 in this company, they will not look out of place. Some really good ones, among them Perkins, O’Sullivan, Garrubba and Scheetz, but can they threaten the big boys? Biggest acquisition: Declan Reilly (North Melbourne): Biggest loss: Nil. Breakout Year: James Shanahan. Finishing range: 5-10 COLLEGIANS: (1st) They will squeeze a few new ones into their lineup as they regenerate their list. Have an excellent farm system with Wesley College churning out good players. Boast perhaps the competition’s best player in Sautner, a raft of gifted midfielders in Bull, Strachan, Ferguson, Ries, Zimbachs and recruit Cam Lee, plus a no-nonsense defence and some boom recruits. It’s a pretty nice time to be a Wesleyan. Biggest acquisition: Cam Lee. Biggest loss: Harry Croft (overseas). Breakout player: Courtney Hylton. Finishing range: 1-3 DE LA SALLE: (6th) Their 2011 campaign stalled when the injuries to star players piled high. The 2

upsides are that they blooded many more players than perhaps they would otherwise have done and that most of their injured players are back on the park, including Moloney, Eddy, Harrison and Moore. Biggest acquisition: Matthew Hine (Collingwood): Biggest loss: Sam Nethersole (overseas). Breakout year: Damien Hale. Finishing range: 1-5 OLD CAREY: (5th) An impressive first year in the top tier, but taking the next step is going to be tougher. Woodville West Torrens premiership player James Rimington will be enormous for the Panthers. Big V skipper Cam Howat will also toss the coin for the his club and he has some class around him in Julian Rowe, Steve Freemantle and Al Parton. Biggest acquisition: Rimington: Biggest loss: Luke Crozier (VFL). Breakout year: Matt Parker. Finishing range: 3-6 OLD SCOTCH: (8th) The Cards have toned down the red in their uniform and have concentrated on building from within while re-establishing stronger links with the school. Veterans are fit and firing and plenty of young talent including Sherwen, McKinley and Bowden. It could be an interesting year for the Caledonians under new coaches Dean Anderson and Stuey Powell. It may not happen overnight, but it will happen. Biggest acquisition: A fit Rob Ferraro and Mark Passador. Biggest loss: George Dick (injury) Breakout year: Nick Jamieson Finishing range: 6-10 OLD TRINITY: (7th) The chatter around town has the Greens included in almost every Demotion Double. There have been few headlines over the summer and second year coach Adam Andrews is seeking a greater consistency and perhaps fewer injuries as springboards to greater performance. As in other years, depth could be the issue. Iezzi, Humann, Walsh, Healy, Howell, Pohl and the evergreen Ramsden can play with the best of them, but the Greens need others to emerge if the oddsmen are to be proven wrong. Biggest acquisition: Mason Cole. Biggest loss: Jake Walsh (NFL punting). Breakout year: Christopher Riggs. Finishing range: 7-10 OLD XAVERIANS: (Last year 4th) Xavs peaked in the first half of their first semi-final last year, playing the scintillating football that had eluded them all year. But their form vanished in an instant and they were dumped in the Prelim final. Have recruited mainly from the list of Barkers Road alumni while preparing some impressive grads of their U19 premiership for senior football. As a group, much fitter than in 2011. Biggest acquisition: Ben Kennedy (Box Hill). Biggest loss: Marcus Allan (Overseas) Breakout year: John Shaw. Finishing range: 1-5 ST BEDE’S/MENTONE TIGERS: (2nd) Stunned Xavs in the prelim but most of the news since has been about departures. Hellier, Garside and Holden might be irregular with VFL duties taking priority and many of the older brigade have departed. New coach Mick Dwyer is a great developer of younger players and it would surprise if a goodly bunch of these don’t step up to help out the Wintles. It could be a tough year, however and a finals finish, though not beyond them, would be a mild surprise. Biggest acquisition: Blake McGrath. Biggest loss: Hiwad Shakaib (injury). Breakout year: Patrick Kean. Finishing range: 4-9 ST BERNARD’S: (Last year, 2nd Premier B) The Snow Dogs are back, and their return has been much anticipated. They’ve had a massive load of new players come in to bolster their list and have lost but a few. Their depth will be excellent but we are yet to learn about their quality. Biggest acquisition: Liam Wilksinson: Biggest loss: Tate Pearson Breakout year: Ryan Schroder Finishing range: 6-10 UNIVERSITY BLUES: (Last year 4th) Blues have installed Fergus Watts as coach and signed former Sandy great Peter Summers and U23 All-Australian Jonno Nash as well as a swag of players from their traditional country zones. Should contend again, though star veterans Andrew Lowcock and Matt Torney have not enjoyed the best of pre-seasons. Biggest acquisition: Summers: Biggest loss: John Meagher (retired) Breakout year: Richie Langham Finishing range: 1-5 I don’t see much room at the top to accommodate the aspirational and the improvers, with Colls, Xavs and Blues very difficult to shift from the four. The Brindisians are vulnerable and I would fancy De La Salle to take their September spot. In fact, THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2012

I am predicting (with no great confidence, albeit) that De La will chalice. THIS WEEK: Traditionally, Xavs have trouble at the Marles, but should be sharp enough to trip up the Ts. De La should have too much for Old Scotch, Old Carey will find Brindisi Street a tough proposition, Caulfield to raise the flag but might lower their colours to the Snow Dogs, while Collegians traipse to Uni Blues to renew acquaintances with Fergus Watts in the match of the day.

FAVOURITE SONS, OLD AND NEW Years of loyal service, camaraderie, personal milestones and premiership glory may entrench a man to his club, but it doesn’t necessarily make him a leader. Or a strategic mind. Or a stirring motivator. Buckley knows it’s not all beer and skittles, Ratten may be breathing a little easier but it hasn’t happened overnight. Oh it’s a ruthless game, this playing for your mates business. Chris Scott took his pedigree elsewhere and struck immediate gold. Premier B sees six new coaches this year and a clear message from clubs: we want success, we want promotion …and we want it now. There is a common trend of replenishment and revitalisation, plenty of youth, a steadying core of experience and a sprinkling return of the wise old stager. Here’s a snapshot of where we finished last year together with off-season movements. Ajax – Premiers Prem C Bernie Sheehy’s boys surprised with a smashing grand final victory, but a number will be travelling this year; expect only guest appearances from Routman, Steinberg and others. Pinch-hitting ruckman Adam SpencerLaitt will be missed, but Jason Samuel and Danny Freed are looking likely and Jason Tendler arrives from Balwyn to stir up a bit of Jacka chatter. Werribee Districts – Runners Up Prem C In a decade of Amateur footy the Tigers have moved from D4 to Premier B with coach Kirk Norton steering a swag of talented juniors for the past six years. The loss of Zachariah medallist Cam Lee (Collegians) and prolific forward Nathan Black (EDFL) will be sorely felt, but plenty of class returns in the guise of Josh Bellegante and Alex Taylor. Old Haileybury – 10th Premier The Bloods’ forward line gets an injection from Johnny Nicolopoulos (DLS) and Nick Gooda (Mornington) while defender Corey Millard 4

returns from Collingwood’s VFL list. Following the club’s misfire in Premier, newly installed coach (and past premiership captain) Darren Seccull has adopted a youth focus, although brother Mark may go again. Son Brede will wear the guernsey (if and) when released from the Pies. Old Melburnians – 9th Premier Former Demon Nathan Brown takes the Redleg reins after a stint at Cheltenham, with lots of exuberant Grammar youth replacing an outgoing dozen of varying levels, including rookie-listed Sam Dunell (St Kilda) and Tom Campbell (Bulldogs). Brown has implemented a hugely physical pre-season program to lift the overall fitness of the group. Beaumaris – 8th An undeniable off-season horribilis for coach Mifsud will be a faint memory as he ponders just WHO will fill the gaping defensive hole left by retiring club favourite Mark ‘Dougie’ Ensor. On the upside, the Sharks welcome back 2010 grand final lynchpin Tommy Dean from overseas and Wilba Murton looks set for a stellar year. Uni Blacks – 7th The Students have a new Master in 2006 Moore medallist and two-time winner of the Brendan Keilar medal, Matt Kempton. Along with the usual country imports watch for Cameron Roberts from the Northern Territory Thunder. Captain Mark Bolton has retired, as have John Kosch and Anthony Evans ...big Batas to fill indeed. Old Ivanhoe – 6th A Scribe’s dream; a club with endless alliteration potential! Coach Hunter welcomes Hayden Heta back to the Hoers and holds high hopes for a heady start from Chris Harder across half-back. The Big H will co-captain with Jarrod Gieschen (limited this year due to work commitments) and the 2007 Woodrow medallist has already set a high benchmark on the training track. A big loss is Simon Fragiacomo who returns to the Razorbacks. th

Oakleigh – 5 Bucking the old-boy trend, career football administrator Martin Stillman clutches the Krusher clipboard after an assisting gig at Canterbury. Three-time club B&F winner and last year’s Moore Medallist Mick Harold was primed for the Big V pre-season hitout and while Tim Edwards & Dion Lucas have departed, the Krushers welcome Kev Holden to the fold. Gabby Irons looks set to continue his excellent late 2011 form. Old Brighton – 4th The ‘Tonners have also gone for the favoured son in the top job: Simon Williams played 221 games, won a B-Grade flag and holds the record as the club’s longest-serving captain. James North returns with dash from Port Melbourne and Ben Austin will cause headaches for opposition forwards. Last year’s club B&F winner, Nick Marston heads overseas. St Kevins – 3rd The tri-colours will be pushing hard for promotion; such is the expectation of a club run as expertly as this one, but it’s gotta translate on-field. Dan Harford brings a dynamic combo of caché and credibility, Captain Ben Dowd is in scintillating pre-season form and John Liston returns to the backline after a few years overseas. Daniel Mahoney is tipped for big things however spearhead Mick Giansiracusa exits the lineup. As ever your match summaries, thoughts and feelings are heartily encouraged. PREMIER C

BIG YEAR AHEAD It’s always difficult to predict what is going to happen in what is affectionately referred to as ‘Crunch’ Section. The stakes in Premier C will be high, there will have been a few butterflies ahead of this week’s games and we’re all no doubt delighted that VAFA footy is finally (it’s nearly May, for crying out loud) back in our lives. While promotion is undoubtedly a great achievement for any football club, when the seniors go eighteen and zip in the home and away rounds and then miss out on the silverware, it’s a disappointing conclusion to the year, which should serve as a huge motivation for the upcoming season. This is what faces Banyule as they step up a level in 2012. Adam Barclay kicked eight in the recent Premier C-Division 4 Big V match and looks likely to be a constant thorn in opposition defence’s sides. Consolidation should always be the first priority when making the step up and, with that in mind, Banyule will be keen to get some early wins on the board. The optimism is high out at Brunswick Street, which is not surprising when a former AFL premiership player headlines a stellar list of recruits. Luke Ablett will undoubtedly provide the Roys with some additional class in the midfield and it’s clear that Fitzroy will be a strong contender at the business end. The Rovers will be Premier C’s nomads for the first few weeks of 2012, as some upgrades are finalised to Boss James. That won’t be the only obstacle to contend with though, with some noteworthy departures from last year’s team, as they drop down from Premier B. Their new skipper, Leigh Fletcher, will again provide plenty of drive out of the middle.

in C Section. The net has been cast far and wide, as recruits from all points of the compass have made their way down to Bulleen Road. Steve McPherson will be expecting the Eagles to be very competitive and with three of his players earning a Big V guernsey in the preseason, the talent is certainly there. Ben Phibbs and Ryan Power arrive at the Nodders from St Bede’s/Mentone amid plenty of fanfare and they will be looking to make a significant mark on Premier C. Mazenod generally seems to be thereabouts at this level and they will be looking to make the most of the Central Reserve fortress as they remain a team to watch. Luke Egan has joined Tim Powell’s coaching staff at the Blues, and the Monash people are very impressed with the football knowledge he has brought to Frearson. There will be the standard sizable list of comings and goings associated with a university team, but the word from the Ashes is that some of their young guns from last year’s U19s, particularly Ben Cailes and Martin Beecroft, will be causing opposition sides some headaches this season. The Rifleman, Mark Williams, had a cup of coffee with the Wellers, before ultimately deciding to head to the bush in 2012. Nevertheless, last year’s finalists may only need internal improvement from their returning players to take the next step. Preseason form has been solid and Killer has every reason to be confident heading into round 1. SPORTS INJURY CASUALTY - Get back in the game

The Vultures are back in Premier C, after claiming the flag in Division 1. The whispers around the league however, are that they are far from satisfied with that win and are expecting to hit the ground running at the higher level. Zeke McCarthy was vice captain of the Big V side and was joined in the team by Mitch Grant and Paul Groves. It has been an offseason of change for the artists formerly known as Old Essendon. In a move that is sure to strengthen their bond with the school, the club is now known as PEGS and has made a switch to the traditional school guernsey. Trent Cummings will be at the helm again in 2012 and there is an air of anticipation over at Wright Road that it could be a big year. Rupo will be very hopeful that their steady influx of recruits will be enough to offset the loss of some prime movers. Still there usually seems to be an abundance of talented underagers ready to step up and this should ensure that the trip to Salesian will not be a happy hunting ground for Rupo’s opponents. So, on to the predictions. I think Old Camberwell will get home (just) against Mazenod; the Roys in to upset the Vultures’ flag unfurling; Marcellin to knock of their old foes, PEGS; Banyule to make a successful start back in Premier C; and Rupo to outlast the Rovers.

ALL ABOARD!! The fine-tuning has all been completed. And now the Division 1 train is about to leave the station. Four new teams are on board (Ormond, MHSOB, Glen Eira and St. John’s), but no-one really knows where this journey will end. The only certainty is that, as of this morning, all ten teams were on an equal footing. However, come 4:45pm this evening, five of those teams will have stolen a march on the others and be one win closer to a finals berth. From experience, practice-matches are never really a hugely reliable form guide. Plenty of tinkering takes place, not all players are available, and it’s a last chance for coaches to check out new players and try a few different strategies. I am excited about what this section promises, as there appears to be plenty of teams “on the up”. On that basis alone, I expect that competition for the top four will be fierce. Last season’s beaten finallists North Old Boys-St. Patrick’s (3rd in ’11) and Whitefriars (4th) will both be eager to turn the pain of September defeat into something more positive come the pointy end of the year. Really, it is a no-brainer that both NOBs and Friars, both with excellent depth and returning coaches Richard Peoples and Theo Vlahos at their respective helms, will be at the forefront of teams vying for promotion. Williamstown CYMS (5th) last season missed out on finals action by percentage only. Despite the loss of a couple of key players, a focus on fitness during pre-season under new coach Ian “Chops” Rickman should ensure that the CYs are better placed to run games out. Pre-season wins against Anglesea and Ormond mean that expectations are high at the Fearon, as are those 8

of their fierce rivals the Pirates. Peninsula (6th) was surprisingly lack-lustre for long periods last season, and this ultimately cost them a place in the finals. A strong run home was not enough to make up for ground lost early on, so I would think that they will hit the ground running from the get-go. After starting 2011 like a house on fire, Old Geelong (7th) ran out of steam just as quickly and had a most disappointing second half of the season. With some solid practice-match form under their belt under new coach Frank Dunell (a familiar name in Ammo footy circles), look for the Oggers to be much more competitive this year. As the old tune goes, for Old Mentonians (8th) the only way is up. The Panthers are looking to “restore the roar” following a horror season which was somewhat salvaged by a fighting win in the final home-and-away match of the season. A talented young list could translate into more wins than losses. For me, the unknowns are the new teams. Ormond won six matches in Premier C last year, and had the sixth best percentage. Talk about being stiff to be relegated! Rumour has it there has been a clean-out at Gunn Reserve, and depth may be tested. MHSOB will be looking to bounce straight back to the more familiar premier grades, but the Unicorns will definitely not find the going any easier this season. However, from all reports pre-season TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD North Old Boys/St Pats v Old Geelong Ormond v Glen Eira Williamstown CYMS v Old Mentonians MHSOB v Whitefriars St Johns OC v Peninsula OB

training has been strong and coach Paul Dodd is confident. Glen Eira was the surprisingly beaten favourite in the ’11 Division Two decider, and the subsequent loss of some key players could see the Saints struggle early on. The big question is how well the new recruits will fit into the team. St. John’s will be keen to avoid the dreaded premiership hangover, and will need to if they are to be competitive in this higher grade. A purely speculative top four at season’s end: NOB-SP, Whitefriars, MHSOB, Peninsula. With Ormond and Williamstown the other main contenders. But enough prognosticating…let’s get to this season’s kick-off. Picking winners for today’s matches, with no form guide other than the intangibles of scratch matches, is fraught with even more danger than usual. The conservative, lazy, unimaginative tipster would merely plump for the home teams and be done with it. Some would say that describes me to a tee! But sometimes I can surprise; here are my winners for today: NOB-SP, Williamstown, MHSOB, Peninsula, Ormond. So hang on to your seat, this train is leaving the station. 2012 promises to be an enjoyable, but sometimes bumpy and unpredictable ride.

A DANGEROUS GAME As Rex Hunt once voiced, a closed mouth catches no foot but doesn’t pay the bills either. Or something like that. So here are my predictions for the season upcoming. And for those who may disagree, don’t get mad, get even. As someone else once said, the last shall be first . . .

close to their chest this season but providing they kept Sabastian Ciavola in cotton wool and adequately hydrated over the summer months, there should be no reason to bein finals contention. I’ll pencil them to finish in 4-6.

The Saints administrators have had a busy summer, recruiting from far and wide to bolster their stocks coming off a less than satisfactory season in 2011. After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, SMS on the back of some decent preseason form are poised to catapult themselves upwards. I’m predicting 7-9.

After a lamentable 2011 in Division 1, the Bullants will unquestionably be looking to improve on their solitary win from the seasons past. Boasting an impressive 100% winning record in this years pre-season, including a resounding victory against the highly touted Banyule Bears, all signs are pointing to a far more enjoyable time at Ted Ajani this season, finishing 7-9. Old Paradians Joining Bulleen in a step down in class this season, Old Paradians, too, should find the going a touch easier in Division 2. While 2011 yielded marginally better results than their demoted counterparts, (4 wins) the demotion has left a sour taste in the mouths of the Paradian faithful and will undeniably be the catalyst behind their predicited success in 2012. With coach David Boundy at the helm and coupled with some extensive recruiting, I’ve got Old Paradians finishing 1st 1-3 at seasons end. South Melbourne Districts History tells us, when a club remains tight lipped through summer, they usually have something to hide. (Did someone say Fevola?) If the lack of information coming from Lindsay Hassett this preseason is any indication of South Melbourne’s form this year, the Swans will be looking to improve on last year’s 6 wins. While the Fevola allegations are unfounded, South Melbourne’s unrelenting spirit is not, I have them finishing 5-7. Eltham Old Collegians Coming off a successful 2011 campaign and boasting arguably one of the most significant home ground advantages in the VAFA. Simalarly to South Melbourne, Eltham have kept their cards 10

St Mary’s Salesian

Therry Penola Showing debatably the strongest pre-season form, and a 2011 season that netted a preliminary final appearance, Therry have the goods to be the side to beat in 2012. Add the arduous trip down the Tullamarine for most sides; they shouldn’t lose many games at home. While I’m pencilling them in between 2 and 4 , and anything could happen come finals time. Monash Gryphons After clawing their way to a Grand Final from 5th position last year, Monash have the undeniable spirit, culture and the tenacity to mix it with the big boys. Time will tell if their “stocky” midfield have the talent to mix it with the best of division 2, but with the likes of Munro, Wells, Baxter and Cherien, I’m predicting they can, finishing 4-6 at season’s end not out of the equation. La Trobe University After missing out on finals action by a mere draw last season, the Students will be throwing everything at Division 2 in 2012. clubs who have chosen to implement protection to their pre-season recruits similar to the codes for nuclear warheads, I’m a touch hesitant to make a prediction. Nonetheless, I’ll go with 5-8 Emmaus St Leo’s Unfortunately in all ladder predictions, there must be the Cellar Dwellers of the season. While I enjoy giving out the term as much receiving as a Tetanus shot, my eyes are on Emmaus St Leo’s. My prediction is not a statement about their list but rather the competition they will be pitted against. Prahran-Assumption Rounding out the Division 2 competition, it’s Prahran-Assumption, the undisputed champions of Division 3 in 2011. Boasting a playing list probably more suited to Premier, I see it inevitable that the 4-Blues join Old Paradians at the top of the table this year. The twin towers in Peter Cristoforo and Adam Sleight to kick 150 goals between them. Looking towards opening weekend, I’m going with Monash over the Swans, Old Paradians to touch up St Mary’s, while Therry will send Emmaus St Leo back down the Tullamarine without any points. Eltham will take the chocolates over the Students away and Prahran to account for the Bullants easily. To assist me in making my outlandish statements more accurate, I would be more than happy to receive any match reports, milestones and praise to rich@scoopon.com.au.

DIVISION 3

NEW SEASON, NEW OPPORTUNITIES Cass McCombs sang “Love thine enemy, but hate their lack of sincerity”. I can almost assure you that no coach will be using this quote as a way to ‘rev’ their team up this weekend. That being said, I feel it wise to have a little bit of love for thine enemy come round one.

action in Division 3. New recruits Shane Lowry (Golden Square) and Nino Bucci (Mt. Pleasant) will try their best to fill the void. I’m backing Elsternwick to come away with the suburban beverages today.

Aquinas v St Francis Xavier

Albert Park has made the finals three years running now and will be a major challenger come September. The Falcons will be looking for a big win as to enjoy their season launch. I hear DJ David Guetta will be special guest at the lavish event.

Aquinas Coach John Le Grand was so obviously annoyed with his teams performance last year, that he put them through a vigorous pre-season that included a Tactical Advantage Bootcamp. Rumour has it he deliberately scheduled it on the hottest day in February. I expect Aquinas to be a threat this year with Captain Nick Morrison-Story leading the way. 2011 was an extraordinary year for the X-Men, who finally won their first senior premiership. They should be strong again with not much movement in their camp. However the step up could prove difficult and I imagine it will be today. Bloods too strong. Elsternwick v Richmond Central Elsternwick were a bit out of tune last year, just missing the finals. I’m tipping this year will be different. Declan Healy has had a hand in recruiting a number of Irish lads to help on and off the field. The nice people at The Wick Hotel and Bistro have informed me they are struggling to cope with the unprecedented spike in Guinness consumption. To add to this follically challenged young gun William ‘Skull’ Christian is looking to have a break-out year. Richmond Central had an impressive 2011 and whilst there have been seven retirements in all, including former skipper Sean ‘Irish’ O’Connor, their defeat in the Division 4 grand final will no doubt whet the appetite for some similar 12

Ivanhoe v Albert Park

Ivanhoe is another interesting prospect this year, with a couple of solid wins in the lead up to round one it will be ready to rumble. Although I can’t see Leigh Cole’s men making the finals this year, they will definitely be around the mark. Albert Park to win this battle of the birds. Hawthorn v UHS-VU New coach Rick Barkla is injecting plenty of enthusiasm down at Rathmines Reserve. New recruit Scott Timmins will add to the sensational depth the Hawks possess. For some, picking the Hawks B&F winner this far out would be near impossible. However, not so for Luke ‘Buckles’ Barkla who admits it will be “probably me”. David “Fatty” Wallace steps up as senior Coach for UHS-VU this year, and the fat man will have his hands full. There were pleasing signs over the pre-season with plenty numbers attending all sessions. are expected to build on solid seasons last year and will need to if UHS-VU is to be competitive again this year. Hawks to swoop. Power House v Yarra Valley Power House will be trying hard to stamp their authority onto Division 3 after a middle of the range 2011. I am excited to see how they progress this year. However I am predicting that they may be the victim of four very strong sides being introduced into the Division and falter. Here’s hoping that new coaches Tony Miller and Jeff Scotland can prove me wrong.

Old Westbourne had a horror season last year, but with Coach Roger Hand at the controls they seem a much improved and more confident collective. There are a number of impressive kids that have stepped up over the pre-season including Harley Tunnecliffe and Tim Davidson that look to be bringing back the wonder years. Kew to open their account at home.

You could forgive Yarra Valley for taking it easy over the pre-season after a solid year, but it was not the case, in fact quite the opposite. Ironically the Bushrangers lived up to their name when Coach Drew took them on a 50km sprint/hike through ‘Kelly Country’. Ross Little impressed on the hike and will be looking to bring that form into round one. Yarra Valley to win, photo for second possibly Power House. Kew v Old Westbourne Kew will be hoping to make it a grizzly opening for the relegated Old Westbourne. With Ian Aitken at the helm looking to keep the “Kew flame burning” there are high expectations for the Bears. Six figure men Aaron Carmen and VC Michael Cochrane will be pivotal if the Bears are to snaffle a finals birth.

DIVISION 4

HERE WE GO AGAIN Well, here we are again. The dawn of a new football season is upon us and it looks like Division Four might once again bring plenty of excitement this winter. With the nature of this competition seeing the two top teams from last year stepping up the Ammo’s ladder into Division 3 and two teams falling down, there’s sure to be a hotly contested battle at the top. The two teams coming down, West Brunswick and Mt Lilydale will be tough to beat as they fight to get back into the higher grade, whilst Swinburne Uni and the Eley Park Sharks will be looking to build on their impressive form last year and try to win the ultimate prize. Let’s take a closer look at the teams. BOX HILL NORTH: (Last year – 9th) Despite only winning five games in 2011 the Demons showed plenty of promise throughout games, however their inconsistency ultimately lead to them finishing the season in second last place. With a new jumper being launched in the off-season and some new recruits heading to Elgar Park, 2012 could provide Box Hill North with a more competitive output this season. Finishing range: 6 – 9 CHADSTONE: (Last year – Wooden Spoon) Winless in season 2011 means one thing for the Synners this year – they can only go up. At least that will be the plan. The coaching staff at Chadstone put a line through 2011 as soon as it ended and have put the work in on the track over the summer to ensure that this season is a lot more prosperous. Finishing range: 8 – 10 MT LILYDALE OC: (Last year – Wooden Spoon, Division Three) The Rams have spent the hot months working hard on rectifying the faults that lead to the poor season in 2011. Only five 14

wins in the home and away season resulted in them taking home the wooden spoon and joining Division Four. Mt Lilydale Old Collegians will be moving heaven and earth to force their way out of the VAFA’s cellar dweller. Finishing range: 1 – 4 NORTH BRUNSWICK: (Last year – 8th) Things are changing down at Allard Park or ‘The Tip’ as it is more fondly referred to. A new jumper and new logo have brought with them high expectations for 2012. One thing is for sure; winning only six out of eighteen games again won’t be acceptable. The offseason has seen several new signings joining the Bulls and with arch rivals, West Brunswick, being relegated to Division Four the emphasis has been lifted. Finishing Range: 3 – 6 POINT COOK: (Last year – 7th) The word from Dunnings Rd is that actions will speak louder than words this season. Another mid-range finish will not be the answer this year as the Bulldogs are firmly aiming for a finals berth come the business end of the season. The team from the far west will be hoping to improve their ability to use their home ground to their advantage and make it as hostile as possible for visiting away teams making the large trip down the highway. Finishing range: 6 – 9 SOUTH MORNINGTON: (Last year – 5th) After just missing out on the finals last season, the Tigers will be gunning for a spot in the top four. The Peninsula side have acquired several TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Box Hill North v Chadstone Mt Lilydale OC v North Brunswick Point Cook v South Mornington West Brunswick v Eley Park Sharks Swinburne University v Manningham Cobras

handy recruits over the off season and could be one of the big improvers in season 2012 if they can improve their troublesome goal kicking efficiency. Finishing Range: 3 – 5 WEST BRUNSWICK: (Last year – 11th, Division 3) The magpies have come down from the higher grade and will be desperate to return to form this season after last year’s disastrous output. Their demotion sets up a tantalising derby against local rivals North Brunswick. Anything less than promotion back into Division 3 will be a failure for the black and white in 2012. Finishing range: 1 – 3

MANNINGHAM COBRAS: (Last year – 6th) The Cobra’s inconsistency in 2011 hurt them deeply and would surely have been a strong focus over the summer. A string of new names joining the Cobra’s have many predicting an improved season is imminent. Form away from Bulleen was a worry last season, so hopefully Manningham can lift their game in this important area. Finishing range: 6 - 9

ELEY PARK: (Last year – 4th) One of the more exciting sides running around in this division, the Sharks will be aiming to build on their impressive 2011 campaign. The Box Hill based team narrowly missed out on the double chance last year on percentage. Another finals appearance must be the goal for the Sharks in 2012. Finishing range: 2 – 5 SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY: (Last year – 3rd) After finishing second at the end of the home and away season in 2011 the Razorbacks couldn’t continue their form into September and bowed out of the finals in straight sets. A summer spent dwelling over the missed opportunity should see the Hawthorn side frothing at the opportunity to make amends for last years melt down. Finishing range: 1 – 4

BIG V

BIG V TRIUMPHS OVER EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE The Big V triumphed over the Eastern Football League by 12 points in a tough contest at Bayswater on 1 April, reinforcing the reputation of the VAFA as the most successful representative outfit in our great game. After struggling to kick straight early and then losing momentum, the Ammo team appeared likely to finish second, but with great determination and resilience, the visitors thundered home to a memorable victory. Coach Simon Lethlean, a former Big V captain who had worn the famous jumper in many important victories, praised the efforts, character and resilience of his team. Julian Rowe was named best afield, while his Old Carey teammates Cam Howat, Lachy McQueenMiscamble and newcomer James Rimington showed plenty of class too. NOBSPC newcomer Matt Firman also showed polish. In the final term, needing big efforts from the forward line, Andrew Merrington and Matt Handley re-asserted their influence, while Nick Sautner broke Eastern hearts with two precision kicks as the clock went into time-on. Ben Dowd and Tommy Simpson flew the flag early, getting plenty of service from John Shaw, but the

EFL kicked the first goal of the game. And while the Easterners displayed confidence and moved the ball with aplomb and hurried help back to combat the VAFA’s aerial threat, they never broke the backs of the Big V team. Mistakes wee made by the visitors, gifting a couple of easy goals, but the spirit never waned. Jack Bull, playing his first senior game in the jumper and the seasoned Ryan Colbert came into the game as coach Lethlean demanded quicker ball movement. In the end, it seemed that only one team was running and while the home team came back from a goal down late in the piece, Sautner strutted his stuff again to seal an emphatic victory. EFL

BIG V Premier C-Division 4 vs EFL Divs 3 and 4. In the curtain-raiser, the EFL defeated the VAFA Premier C – Div 4 team by 15 points in a highly entertaining contest. Banyule’s Adam Barclay booted eight for the Big V in a brilliant performance, but could not get his team over the line. Skipper Gareth Snow won the toss for the VAFA and kicked with a slight breeze. The Ammos held sway early, but might have registered a few more scores given their forward entries. The Easterners had an unhappy time in front of the sticks but straightened up to dominate the middle part of the contest, booting ten goals to five in the second and third terms. The last quarter was a shootout but the visitors couldn’t get closer than 9 points despite the THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2012

mercurial Barclay and a supporting cast that did everything possible to steal the game. Coach Dean Matthews suffered poor luck when he lost Rob Chisholm and Ben Phibbs before the game and Paul Groves soon after the first bounce. EFL:

RETRO

Geoff Reilley

12 MONTHS AGO – 2011 In a stunning opening to the season, Caulfield Grammarians trounced St Bernard’s at St Bernard’s in Premier B by 119 points, 25.21 to 7.10. The stalwarts at St Bernard’s were dumfounded but promised a much better showing in the return game. Best – Shanahan, L Price, Meredith (6), L O’Keefe, T Sundberg (3), Pelchen (Caulfield) and A Stapleton, M Stapleton, Sullivan. Madden, George (3), Cooke (St Bernard’s). It was a low scoring and dour struggle in Premier C between Monash Blues and Old Essendon. Still anyone’s game at three quarter time, it was Monash who got over the line, 9.9 to 7.4. Best – McKenzie, Bartram, Smyth, Main, Davidson, McCart (Monash) and Wilson, R Jones, Ryan, Stewart, B Jones (Essendon). 5 YEARS AGO – 2007 VAFA CEO Michael Sholly welcomed two new clubs, South Mornington in D4 and St Francis Xavier in Club XVlll. South Mornington met a pumped up Box Hill North and after an even first quarter succumbed to BHN’s pressure and all round ability, 24.12 to 10.19. Best Hood, R Ball (5), Odza, Irvine (3), Riscalla, Manno (BHN) and Brower, Welsby, Sissons, Ryan, Kemp, Bolger (SM). St Francis Xavier had a great start against Mazenod Old Collegians 18.23 to 10.7. Best – Russo, A Pryor, B Pryor, Lenders, Gargan, Cunningham (StF) and D McMullin, Crameri, Hawkins, Fahey, Buszard, S McMullin (M). A Section senior coaches were Andrew Kenneally (Collegians), David Madigan (De La Salle), Greg McLoughlin (Old Brighton), Peter Nicholson (Old Haileybury), Gerard Sholly (Old Ivanhoe), Barry Price (Old Scotch), Phil Gaut (Old Trinity), Barry 36

Richardson (Old Xaverians), Simon Madden (St Bernards) and John Kanis (Uni Blues). 10 YEARS AGO – 2002 Whitefriars commenced their season with a strong performance against Collegians in C Section and won 12.14 to 8.13. Best – Kennedy, C Carrigg (6), Carbone, Duffy, Pasqualotto, Janson (Whitefriars) and Hosking, Piasente, Heneberry, Cooper (3), Thomas, Woolhouse (Collegians). St Leo’s Emmaus was too strong for Bulleen Templestowe in D1 Section, 11.16 to 8.8. It was only in the last term that its strength took over however and there hadn’t been more than a goal in it until the final change. Best – Fennel, Dinicolantonio (3), Krebs, McKenzie, Ristrevski, Donavan (ESL) and Prior, O’Donnell, Williams, Tehan, Schneider, Smith (BTemp). D4 Section coaches were John Ahern (Albert Park), Peter Armstrong (Box Hill North), Angelo Lamanna (Bulleen Cobras), Brian Doody (Eltham OC), David Keast (Mt Lilydale), Ange Sammartino (Nth Brunswick), Ashley Casperson (Old Westbourne) and Tony West (Rupertswood). 20 YEARS AGO – 1992 It was the centenary year of the VAFA and the introduction of a 25 metre penalty to replace the former 50 metre was one of the major changes. St Bernard’s and Old Xaverians returned to A Section at the expense of Uni Blues and Old Melburnians and the State team would play the South Australian amateurs as a curtain raiser at Waverley Park before the Hawthorn V Adelaide game. St Bernard’s made a great start with a comprehensive victory at Old Scotch’s expense, 16.15 to 6.12. Best – Calthorpe, Overman, Walsh. Egan, Purcell, Carey (StB) and McCall, Reddish, Brady, J Hart, Smith, Fuller (Scotch). THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2012

Power House’s Peter Stewart reached his 150th along with Rod Bertram at Clayton. Ron Verma (MHSOB) and Mark McColl (Kew) both played their 50th. Ormond’s Damien Casey began playing with the Monders in 1990 and will reach this Senior milestone 22 years on. Along the way, Damien has won the U19 and Reserves Best and Fairest and has played in two Reserves Premierships. Despite retiring four or five times from the game, Damien continues to come back. Well done Damien.

Old Geelong’s James “The Chief” Hope-Johnstone arrived at the OGs in 2003 but persistent hamstring injuries have meant he’s into his 10th season before bringing up this milestone.

AJAX’s Evgenie Routman played with the U19s and was a runaway winner of the club best and fairest. Since then Evgenie has been a regular senior player. In 2010 and 2011 he has often shown his brilliance and is one of the excitement machines at the Jackas. Certainly the highlight of his AJAX career would be the 2 medals he won last year as the Michael Ritterman medallist as best on ground in the winning AJAX premiership. Congratulation Evgenie.

UNDER 19 Another season of U19 football begins today. For so many, it is the first toe in the VAFA waters, the first venture in what may become a long career with an Ammo club. We look back ten years to see those names on U19 playing lists and we can ask “where are they now?” of most. But a significant number are still with us, stars for their club and in the Big V, doing well in a profession, business or trade. Ben Carboni of Caulfield Grammarians, Leigh Fletcher of Hampton Rovers, Jack Healy of Old Trinity spring to mind.

NORTH: AJAX; Emmaus St Leo;s; Ivanhoe; La Trobe University; MHSOB; Old Geelong; Therry Penola; Williamstown CYMS SOUTH: Beaumaris ; De La Salle; Hampton Rovers ; Monash Blues; Parkdale Vultures Peninsula OB; St Bedes / Mentone Tigers; St Mary’s Salesian

In recent years, De La Salle has consistently been the power club at this level. Old Xaverians has been nipping at its heels and last year won the U19 Premier flag as well as the U19 South premiership. However, U19 football can change quickly, with players graduating to senior ranks, being lured elsewhere or retiring through lack of senior pathways. Sadly, in recent years, more than one club has won a premiership at U19 level yet failed to field a team the following season. In 2011, North 1 and South 1 became Sections 2 and 3 in the mid-year, which reduced the incidence of blow-outs. Accordingly, this year the competition comprises three sections graded according to strength and two according to geography. This is how it looks, with my stronger possibilities in bold: PREMIER: Beaumaris; De La Salle; Fitzroy; Old Melburnians; Old Scotch; Old Xaverians; St Bede’s/Mentone Tigers; St Bernard’s; University Blacks; University Blues SECTION 2: Caulfield Grammarians; Marcellin OC; Old Brighton; Old Carey Old Haileybury; Old Trinity; St Kevin’s; Werribee Districts SECTION 3: Collegians; Mazenod OC; Northern Blues; Old Camberwell; Old Xaverians; Ormond; PEGS; St Bernard’s 42

UNDER 18 Changing football priorities has left the U18 competition a little short on teams, though there is no doubt that this age level is a very important part of the strategy of some clubs.

The seven teams are: Oakleigh; Rupertswood; St Bernard’s; St Mary’s Salesian; UHS-VU / Flemington; Werribee Districts; Williamstown CYMS

Once again, we expect some fearsome competition among the VAFA’s youngest players. With a bye built-in, there is an opportunity for players to test themselves at higher levels, whether U19, Reserves or for the very best, seniors.

UNDER 18 GRAND FINAL

The clubs competing this year are mainly from the west/north-west, a hot-bed of junior football. However, watch for St Mary’s Salesian, who have had great numbers at training in the pre-season and hope to get off to a good start.

UMPIRES

Steve McCarthy & Cam Davidson

WELCOME BACK! Great to be back with a new season finally upon us after the longest preseason ever. Macca: Just like to start off by acknowledging my co-scribe Cam Davidson on recently completing the Tough Mudder Challenge at Phillip Island. He needed a big rest after that and we’ll see him return from overseas very soon. Cam: Thanks Macca, great to be back. Tough Mudder was tough but I wish you well and of course big brother Rusty as you both compete in the Oxfam Trailwalker over 100 km. Rusty’s team will be flying along hoping to finish in about 16 hours, whilst Macca’s team is hoping to amble along and finish in about 25 hours. Hopefully both will be fit and well for Round 2. Changes at the top. We’d like to welcome a couple of new assistant coaches to the ranks as well. Neil Woods and John Booker will assist Robert Sebbens with the boundary umpires Peter Teasdale will assist Mark Gibson with the D2 to D4 field umpires. Milestones We start with a couple of big ones. At Glenhuntly in the Clash between Caulfield Grammarians and St. Bernard’s, both goal umpires will be hoping for a great day. After stints as a field umpire and boundary umpire, Life Member Craig Brajtberg celebrates 350 VAFA games. At the other end we see a slighter bigger milestone as the legendary Dom Napoli celebrates his 400th VAFA game. Both have had fantastic careers with plenty of finals and grand finals along the way. Hope you guys have a great day and a few people can call into the after-match at Caulfield to give them the respect and recognition they deserve. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2012

Pre-Season Review Plenty of news coming out of Elsternwick Park in the early stages of pre-season. We have dozens of new members (thanks largely to the Bobby Sebbens Recruitment Drive continuing from last year), and some returning faces (Michael Hooper from WA, amongst others). Bowled Over A fantastic social night was enjoyed by all at the Elsternwick Bowls Club recently. Well done to President Luke Holmes for this initiative and the large numbers in attendance. Great shot of Lionel Katz as the most formal bowler we’ve ever seen. (Photo attached) A Snag, Beer and Mortgage From Our Sponsors… The VAFAUA is proud to announce the ongoing association with our major sponsors Orca and Personal Mortgage Managers. Boags have kindly agreed to assist us with match day polo shirts (minus the logo for those underage umps!), and there will be further announcements to come regarding their involvement. Finally, the good folk at Harris Family Butchers (73 Mackie Rd, East Bentleigh) have done a fantastic job in providing us with meat for our regular BBQs.
