AFL AVOIDS VAFA CLASH The weather gods smiled on us as the divisions and under age sections took to the fields in the first weekend of finals. Already we have had three teams promoted and a draw which resulted in overtime and a pulsating two point victory to Old Geelong. Sportscover Arena hosted the two closest games of Week 1 of the finals series. The second semi final in Division 1 saw North Old Boys/St Pats win by just 2 points over Peninsula and are now reentering Premier C. North Old Boys combined with St Patricks, Ballarat in 2006 and were relegated to Division 1 in 2007. Mergers can take a period of time for integration to occur and with this year’s president hailing from the St Pat’s half they are reaping the rewards and a whole new opportunity awaits for this club. Our new extra time rules were put into place for the in the first semi final in Division one between Old Geelong and Whitefriars. At the end of normal time the teams were locked at 11.10.76 each of two. Both clubs went into a huddle and the captains summoned into the centre for the coin toss to select ends. Previously it was a straight swap of ends but this rule was changed last year. Two five minute halves of time on were played out and Old Geelong celebrated with a 2 point victory. For the record if the scores were level after the second half the timekeepers are instructed not to blow the siren until the next score. Congratulations also to Bulleen Templestowe and South Mornington who have gained promotion to Divisions 1 and 3 respectively. Bulleen Templestowe, a former A Section club, responded in the best possible way after being relegated last year. South Mornington entered the VAFA in 2007 and this is their first promotion after building a base following their success in securing the

Two sides have the opportunity to go through the sections in consecutive years - Parkdale Vultures and Prahran Assumption. They are endeavouring to win through to Premier C and Division 1 respectively after winning premierships in 2011. What is interesting to note is that both of these clubs are merged clubs similar to NOBS/St Pats in Division 1. In 2004, Parkdale Vultures commenced as a merge between Mentone Amateurs and Parkdale from the Southern Football League. This is the second year of the successful Prahran and Assumption College amalgamation. This is on the back of the outstanding success St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers had winning three consecutive flags in Premier C, B then A from 2006 - 08. The success of these clubs must have other clubs pondering such a move. The Premier Sections enter the finals this week and we have six blockbuster semis played at Sportscover Arena, Box Hill City Oval and Trevor Barker Oval, Sandringham. With the AFL making the strategic move of placing their finals at night so as not to take on the VAFA’s finals head to head, all focus will be on VAFA matches during the day. For the second year we had the vote count completed live on 96.5 INR FM last Tuesday and Wednesday. In 2009, after a successful senior career at Richmond, Cam Howat returned to his schoolboy team Old Carey. In his four years in the VAFA, he has been a part of Old Carey’s 2010 Premier B premiership, toured Ireland in 2011, this year captained the senior Big V and on Wednesday was announced the winner of the Woodrow Medal as the Best and Fairest in the Premier Section. NOW FOR FINAL EXAMS What have we learnt from 18 rounds of football? The home and away season concluded last week and with studying over it’s time for exams. Do we have a premiership favourite? Who will pass the final exam with the best mark in 2012? On pure statistics you would have to say that the ladder positions are an accurate reflection on any market if one was to be framed When crunching the numbers of win/loss record against the other finalists Collegians come out on top with a record of 4-2. Old Xaverians and De La Salle both have a 3-3 record whilst Old Scotch is 2-4 against their finals opponents. What does it tell us? The answer is nothing. Finals are a different beast and for that reason Collegians can be happy with a win against Old Xavs last week, but it would be dangerous to expect the same again. Old Carey finished their season on a high with a win over De La Salle at home. Carey always match up well against De La and the Panthers led all day and were intent on ending their season on a happy note. There is no doubt they have enormous talent but losing three games by under a kick has ultimately cost them a place in September. Damien Yze kicked three to go top of the Sharp Shooters table and despite a late De La Salle fight back, Old Carey hung on to win their final game of 2012 by 14 points. Uni Blues were on the cusp of breaking their Brindisi Street hoodoo when they lead St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers by 14 points at the final change. St Bedes/Mentone Tigers proceeded to rattle on five unanswered goals in the final term to just two behinds from Uni Blues. Darcy Holden finished with five goals into end the Tigers season on a high. Both clubs will be keen to reset for a stronger showing in 2013, particularly earlier in the season. Old Trinity and Caulfield Grammarians played out an entertaining contest in their last game in Premier Section for at least a season. The relegated sides were both looking to end the season with a 2

smile and most observers were probably hoping that the Fielders could salute for the first time this year. Alas it wasn’t to be as Old Trinity kicked away to win by 38 points with four goals to Brett Howell and three to Andrew Ramsden to take him level with Old Carey’s Yze to share the goal kicking honours. Caulfield become the seventh team to record a winless season in the top section but the lessons learnt this year should keep them in good stead for a massive tilt at the Premier B premiership in 2013. For Old Trinity the question remains will Rambo play on? Old Scotch have found some devastating form in recent weeks. The come from behind win against Old Carey has lifted their confidence levels, trust and belief in each other to all time highs. They are playing fast, exciting football and it was on display against St Bernards at Camberwell last Saturday. A nine goal second term was merely the centerpiece in a display that should have De La Salle checking the video this week. Lach Hill was on the end of five goals and Matt Burns four as the Cardinals sourced multiple avenues to goal. St Bernards would be happy with their season, for a time they were a chance of playing finals before injuries took their toll. Five goals to Andrew Merrington was a good return and winning the last quarter with six goals to one is a fond memory to take into pre-season. Collegians were pleased with the win over Old Xaverians but won’t be taking it for granted. Collegians had 10 more scoring shots, had three players kick 4.11 between them and prevailed by 10 points. The highlight of the day was the mark of the year that wasn’t. Collegians backman Will Tardif flew above the pack on the goal line to haul down a Shaun Smith like screamer only for the goal umpire to adjudicate that Ben Kennedy’s kick for goal had crossed the line for six points. was just a mock exam, the real stuff happens this weekend. Collegians v Old Xaverians Collegians should be confident that they have the game to defeat Old Xaverians. Old Xavs on the other are either foxing or have some question marks on their form. It’s always hard to tell how a side’s form is going when they have been locked in to a double chance for a few weeks. Perhaps Xavs have been coasting? Both sides have players to return to their best 22 and both have injury clouds over key players. Jon Mercuri rolled his ankle and doesn’t look a likely starter but Matt Handley should return from a week off. Whether they get balance out of that swap is a question for Andy Gowers and his match committee. Trent Zimbachs also seemed to roll an ankle last week but he should play. They also have Jack Bull to return and a certain Nick Sautner who is almost right. So to a prediction, if the game is anything like last week then we are in for a treat. win by 13 points. De La Salle v Old Scotch De La Salle’s form line is a harder read than the Art of War. One week they are up the next they get beaten. De La had a great quarter against Old Xavs sandwiched by losses to Old Carey and St Bedes/Mentone. More worrying was their last match against Sunday’s opponents Old Scotch. Yes, there were players out and yes, De La have virtually had the last few weeks knowing they were playing finals but the lack of consistency make them hard to tip. Old Scotch are the complete opposite and in recent weeks have been building their form to a finals like standard. On form alone I lean to Old Scotch by 24 points but who knows, finals are a different beast.

THE FINAL FOUR, THE SILLY SIX With no cinderella stories rising from the last home and away fixture, the final four remains unchanged. Blacks take minor premiership honours, Skevs hang onto the double chance, Beauy tuck into third and OMs make up the quaddie. There are probably a few fairy stories however coming from the Silly Sunday and Mad Monday exploits of those who have once again pulled on tu-tus, tiaras and fishnet stockings. Nothing wrong with footballers letting off steam and bonding in harmless post-season nuttiness, but why does it usually involve dressing as women? And petite women at that? Nuggety onballers swathed in feather boas, power forwards mincing about in Kylie Minogue hotpants while burly backmen pirouette and squat in drunken grande-pliés a la the Black Swan. Men are so weird, we’ll never understand you! OLD HAILEYBURY finished with eleven wins and a full sail, claiming a juicy SKOB scalp last weekend. Another year establishing some consistency in B grade should help their next tilt at Premier, Gooda was a terrific pickup this year and young Seccull electric when free to ply his trade. OLD BRIGHTON also finished on the right side of the ledger with ten wins following a very strong back nine. Austen and Bruin were solid throughout and Anthony made a welcome return to senior footy. Coach Simon Williams will be getting his lads’ preparation underway much earlier for season 2013, watch for them next year. AJAX coach and popular Amateur journeyman Bernie Sheehy announced his retirement last weekend after four years at the Jacka helm. The incomparable Bernie steered his lads to a muchcelebrated Premier C flag last year and a safe berth in B grade for 2013. The step-up in class didn’t faze Team of the Year full forward David Fayman, who also wins this year’s Sharpshooter Award (60 goals). Fayman takes out the double4

double if you like, considering he claimed those same two honours last year in Premier C. WERRIBEE Districts avoid the bounce-back to Premier C, a feat in itself given an horrendous list of early-season injuries. Still, it meant blooding talented youngsters such as Bol Kolang. With a solid junior club connection and a robust winning culture the Tigers should reassert themselves in 2013. OAKLEIGH will be disappointed with relegation after finishing fifth last year however coach Stillman also had to contend with an endless stream of injuries, running 48 players through the seniors. Losing Holden and Jetta didn’t help – but Harold, Cleary and Lamb showed class. OLD IVANHOE struggled with just the solitary win but pushed a few sides. Hayden Heta made a welcome return, Nick Butler and Michael Delmonte toiled hard but the ‘Hoes are all tip and no iceberg until they recover from the pre-season raid that decimated their young ranks. SECOND SEMI FINAL PREVIEW After the loss to Old Haileybury last week St Kevins will be disappointed with their form coming into finals: the tri-colours were challenged through the midfield and inefficient with the ball, however their backline was very impressive - Sam Bishop in particular played a beauty. Skobber fans will be relieved to see a number of playmakers return to the line-up this week. Uni Blacks stitched up the minor premiership with a 22-goal drubbing of Old Ivanhoe; not really the best prep for finals either aside from kicking practice and a chance to TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD

rest a few aches and niggles. Mahon and Lahy are coming into great form and Levi Kalms’ raking left foot adds x-factor grunt to the Black’s silky band of finesse players. St Kevin’s coach Dan Harford has some heavy expectations on his shoulders (and a few tricks up his sleeve) while Matt Kempton would like nothing better than to hip and shoulder Uni Blues grasping the holy grail of Premier promotion. Both sides will be spurred on, don’t miss a brilliant showcase of quality amateur talent: Saturday at Box Hill City Oval. Blacks for mine in a thriller. Mind you, Lachie Bennett’s tenacity and James Beaumont’s creativity all around the ground will be difficult to counter. It’s all or nothing on Sunday at Trevor Barker Oval, expect to see everything left out there on the field in this sudden death showdown. FITZROY GOALFEST SECURES SECOND SPOT With all five Round 18 games in Premier C having direct implications on the composition of the top four, spies from Fitzroy, Marcellin, Mazenod, PEGS and Old Camberwell would have been scattered at the different grounds, reporting back to HQ with exactly what their clubs needed to get to the promised land. In the end, the big winners were the Roys and the Nodders, who claimed second and fourth spot respectively, with great wins. One positive for Mazenod was that the number crunchers weren’t required. The equation was simple: win and they stayed in; lose and it would take a miracle. In front of a partisan crowd at their beloved Central Reserve, they booked their spot in the first semi final. The Nodders started well, but were inaccurate, with 19 scoring shots to eight only translating to a 26 point margin at the half. The inaccuracy continued through the third quarter, but the Nodders were in complete control, with the game over at three quarter time. From there, the sting went out of the contest and the game meandered towards the final siren. David Regan was Mazenod’s best player, while Ben Phibbs was back near his best and Chamath Jayaweera bagged five. For the Vultures, the loss was disappointing, but they finished clear on top for a reason and they will regroup in time for the highly anticipated clash with Fitzroy. Mark Kidner was their best. PEGS certainly did everything they could to make it to the top four, chalking up a big win at Monash. It was a polished display from the Grammar, who won all four quarters to finish the season on a high note. Chris Goullet capped off an outstanding season with another dominant performance, while Brett Hannah’s form, since promotion from the under 19s, has been another 6

highlight. For the Ashes, George Smyth, Andrew Hickey and Sam Baring again stood up. Old Camberwell needed Mazenod and PEGS to lose, along with winning its own game, to get back into fourth and they managed to hold up their end of the bargain, getting home in a cliffhanger against Rupertswood. Warren Carlyle and Rohan Kapoor starred for the home side in the win which ended a frustrating year on a high note. From Rupo’s perspective, the usual suspects all stood up: Leigh Brennan with six, Lachlan Baddeley, Mitch Gaunt and Matthew Quigley. As the Eagles made the short trip to Brockwell to take on Banyule, they were well aware that they needed to win big to give themselves a chance of hanging on to second spot. Unfortunately for Marcellin, the Bears had other ideas and, with scores from Brunswick Street no doubt being relayed through, the cue needed to be put in the rack. Tom Jones has blossomed for the Eagles and Jarrod Carlson had another great game. For Banyule, Ryan Hay was their best, kicking four. With half a percent separating Marcellin and Fitzroy after Round 17, it was basically a case of the Roys needing to beat the Rovers by more than Marcellin beat Banyule to take second spot. And after a pretty pedestrian first stanza, Fitzroy produced three of the finest quarters any team has displayed this season, ramming home 28 of their 32 goals and pushing the margin in the vicinity of 200. Parkdale Vultures v Fitzroy The finals commence on Saturday, with the second semi between Parkdale and Fitzroy at Trevor Barker Oval, in Sandringham. It’s hard to know how much to take out of the performances in Round 18, as the importance of their games to the teams’ final standings were at opposite ends of the spectrum. Sandringham is a tough ground to play on and it’s often blowing a gale down there, so the team that adapts quickest to the conditions will have a distinct advantage. but I think the Roys might turn the tables and be the first team to earn promotion to Premier B Section for 2013. Marcellin v Mazenod Mazenod and Marcellin will do battle in the first semi on Sunday at Box Hill. The Nodders have had a fantastic run after a 1-4 start and have a real belief that they can beat anyone. Meanwhile, Marcellin has been one of the standout teams all season and they were also able to knock off the Vultures in the past month. It will be a starstudded contest between two proud clubs and it should go right down to the wire. I’m tipping Marcellin to just get up in a thriller.

Cam has been playing off the back flank for Old Carey this year setting up and creating their attacks with his precise left foot kicking. He was also made Co-Captain of the club in 2012 and was a runaway winner of the Woodrow this year with 21 votes, seven votes clear of his nearest rival.

With 20 votes Charlie beat out his teammate Andrew Willingham to the Moore Medal by two votes thanks to a best on ground display in the final game of the year. The ruckman Willingham had been putting the ball down his throat for most of the season but Richardson was all class every time he got the ball.

Jarrod has led from the front for Marcellin’s push into the finals as they look to make their way back to the upper echelons of amateur football. DIVISION 1- THE PEPPER MEDAL MATT KEOWN – NOBS / ST PATRICKS The skipper has been phenomenal this year in leading his side to a 17-1 season and a monumental come from behind two point win in their second semi final last weekend. Keown is now a back to back winner after being a joint winner of last year’s Division 1 Pepper Medal. Matt won this year more comfortably with 23 votes giving him three votes of breathing space this time around.

DIVISION 4 – THE MEEHAN MEDAL JORDAN LAMPI – POINT COOK Jordan has been a dynamic player for Point Cook as they pushed towards a first finals campaign. A regular midfielder who has drifted forward, his skill and poise under pressure have been a highlight in 2012. FREUDIAN SLIP Staying with Inner FM we turn our attention to a piece of commentary we heard at the start of the third quarter on Saturday. Broadcasting the Old Xaverians versus Collegians, commentator Andrew Leonard had a slip of the tongue he would rather forget. With Collegians looking to clear the ball of their halfback line we will hand over to Andrew: “Handpass goes

to Harvey who has time to s**t, ah to sit and deliver beautifully to Kondarovskis”. Obviously there is one extra letter there that turned the word ‘sit’ into something else. It drew an interesting response from the rest of the commentary team amongst the giggles for the next passage of play.

He was a key member of the 2011 Reserves premiership team, and was a member of the senior grand final team in 2009. James was awarded as the U19 most consistent in 2006, Reserves most consistent in 2010 and runner up in the Reserves Best and Fairest in 2011.

De La Salle’s Sam Pickett is one of the best forwards in the competition and certainly one of the most exciting. A brilliant high mark, Sam is almost unstoppable on his day. In addition to his marking and goal kicking feats Sam is known for his courage and attack on the football. A crowd favourite at De La Salle, he is an U19s premiership player, VAFA representative, senior leading goal kicker in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and has several best and fairest placings.

Marcellin’s Tom Jones has been a mainstay of the Eagles senior outfit since his first game at the club in 2007. Playing various roles due to his size and strength, Tom has been extremely adaptable and has now found himself leading a very strong Eagles backline as they head into the finals. Besides being a leader on the ground, Tom has been a leader off field as well helping run the day to day operations and social events the club offers. Tom is integral to ensuring the continued off field successes of the MOCFC.

Fitzroy’s Tom Cheshire joined the club in 2007 after playing for the Fitzroy Juniors, and played in the U19 Premiership that year. Tom played four seasons of U19s and in 2010 ‘graduated’ into the Seniors where he won the club’s Rising Star Award and has played nearly all of his football. He has also played a handful of Reserves games.

Oakleigh’s Tim Doherty first played with the Seniors against Mazenod in round 14, 2008 and has now established himself has a consistent senior player.

Oakleigh’s Pat Ioannidis first played with the Krushers against Beaumaris in round 2, 2010 and was also a 2010 Under 19 premiership player.

Fitzroy’s Max Oliver has celebrated his 50th game for the club. He joined the club in 2009 and has played U19s, Clubbies and this year Thirds. Max has also on a number of occasions this year donned the white and was a field umpire for the club’s Clubbies games.

A WEEK-END FOR THE AGES Last week-end was truly a showcase of amateur football. Perfect footy weather, excellent conditions at Sportscover Arena, and above all, four clubs determined to give their all in their respective semi-finals. With all these factors in play, is it any wonder that both semis were decided by two points? Furthermore, both of the victorious teams overcame three-quartertime deficits, with one game going into extra time. It was a week-end for the ages; one which has set the stage for a thrilling preliminary final today. Second Semi review: On Saturday, North Old Boys – St Patrick’s hit the ground running, controlling possession for most of the first quarter but failing to hurt their opponents on the scoreboard. In fact, that inability to score goals was a pattern which would continue – for both teams - throughout the day. NOBs’ midfield was on top, but the seven-point lead at the first break was not reflective of their dominance to that point. Given their quality, it is not surprising that Peninsula Old Boys worked their way back into the match, with their midfielders taking control and providing good supply to the forwards. A four goal to one term saw the pendulum swing in favour of the Pirates. The third term was a tough grind, with the defences of both teams well on top; one goal for the quarter was all either team could manage, with poor conversion still continuing to be a factor. However, it was during this period that I felt NOBs on-ballers were beginning to claw their way back into it. At the final break, the Pirates held a handy (in a low-scoring affair) 14

ten-point buffer. And when Peninsula scored the first goal, it was suddenly difficult to see NOBs winning – another goal would probably have sealed it, but some gettable chances were missed. But all of a sudden the game started to open up: Hosking at half-back took a telling grab from a kickout, the hard-working Brady was finding space as were Cassell, Ezard and Porter. The ball was now spending plenty of time in NOBs forward half. Keown also took three telling grabs to keep the game alive. NOBs began peppering the goals but it took the nerveless Horsley and Ryan, with back-toback majors, to edge their team into the lead shortly before the final siren. It was a mostdeserving victory, which will long be talked about at Gillon Oval. Best for Peninsula were the tireless Stefan Barbour, who kept getting up after being crunched, Cade Bannister and Stuart Grigg with three goals. First Semi review: Who would have anticipated that Saturday’s quality and excitement would be bettered in Sunday’s encounter? Although a little blustery, conditions were again excellent. Whitefriars took advantage of their early use of the breeze, and booted 5-5 to take a handy 22-point lead into the quarter-time break. Although Old Geelong had plenty of the ball in the second term, they recorded up to a dozen turnovers, which meant they could make scant inroads into the deficit. have taken huge strides this season under seventh-placed also-rans to being on the cusp of Premier C. It would be a huge effort to come from those depths to win their way through to the grand final. HHaving “done the double” over Peninsula this season, they will head into today’s match full of confidence. But the Pirates are a hardened finals outfit, and have a steady hand at the tiller in coach Brett McIlwraith. Last week’s despair may be the extra motivation they require to reverse those two home-andaway losses. Doubtless it will be another thriller. But for me, the experience of the Pirates will be telling, and they should prevail by around ten points.

OH WHAT A LOVELY DAY Much like the sun soaked day that greeted us on opening day way back in April, the remnants of the long, miserable winter made way for beautiful opening day of Spring. Fortunately for Eltham, Bulleen and Prahran, a similar weather pattern is forecast for our 2 remaining Saturday’s of the season. For Old Paradians, the blooming flowers and the unfamiliar tingle of sunlight on ones neck would be a double edged sword, their season coming to an expected, yet abrupt halt.

Despite the notable size difference in grounds, the windy conditions at Central Reserve would play into Old Paradians type football, a season spent on the smaller, grassless Garvey Oval putting them in good stead for a low-scoring, defensive game.

Keeping Eltham goalless in the second quarter, and with a handy 30 point buffer, Bulleen went on to further extend their lead, sending a frightening message to either Prahran or Eltham in the process.

Kicking against the breeze in the first, Old Paradians drew first blood, setting the scene for at least the first half, strangling the two-blues and forcing them wide. A return of 1 goal, 8 behinds their just reward. Trailing by 16 points at the half, the crowd were treated to the competition conquering twoblues we’ve all become accustomed to over the past 2 years, erasing the deficit, and then creating their own 8 point lead at the final change. With momentum, and as expected, the two blues were unstoppable, despite kicking into a stiff breeze, they pulled away. Efforts from Dempsey, Simpson, Musster and Sleight simply sensational, steering Prahran-Assumption to their yet another preliminary final.

Across the pond, the contest was not as rigorously fought, Bulleen Templestowe annihilating Eltham by 59 points. Squashing calls that the minor premiers had been in a form slump leading up to the finals, the Bullants lead from the first bounce, the usual suspects in Florance, Khouri and Chaerbakof dominating.

Joining the aforementioned in the best for Bulleen Templestowe was Rob Edsall and Daniel Dynon while for Eltham Johnny Laver, Matthew Crooks and Ryan Foo who deserve a mention. Old Eltham Assumption

THE SUBURBS In the suburbs I, I learned to drive. And you told me we’d never survive. You always seemed so sure, that one day we’d fight in a suburban world. In a suburban world, your part of town gets minor. Sometimes I can’t believe, that these suburban worlds are already colliding, the four sides that battled it out this weekend showed how valuable suburban wars can be. In what was possibly the nicest Melbourne afternoon in about four months, a sizeable crowd gathered at Northcote’s Bill Lawry Oval to see two suburban giants battle it out. Yarra Valley, waiting for the victor. Ivanhoe came ready to start, while it took their opponents UHS-VU a while to get going. The Hoers set about their task with open minds and it seemed as though it would be a blowout from the outset. Moose Close and Lachie Roberts headed the early assault, at quarter time Ivanhoe lead by a handy 19-points. After a lack lustre opening term Uni High’s big guns, Mark Temming and Declan Barlow, stood up and gave the Uni a bit of much needed dash through the middle of the ground. Uni High managed to draw the margin to within a couple of good kicks. Unfortunately that was as close as they got as Ivanhoe’s midfield took charge. Justin Harty and Paul Harris began to dominate the centre clearances, the former doing some of his finest work up forward. The late second quarter surge set the wheels in motion for what was to be a real confidence-boosting win for the Hoes. The second half started in a similar style to the first as the Hoes continued to push. Uni High 20

could only watch as the game as the lead drifted away from them. The margin blew out to 40 plus and that’s where it remained for the rest of the match. The always-impressive Moose jagged seven and as usual looked dangerous all day. Ryan Fort was excellent in the ruck, putting in a real old school performance, taking just about every contest without a rest. A closer game was held at another suburban arena, only a few postcodes over. Aquinas and Kew had arguably more on the line, the battle that ensued was indicative of that. Aquinas started the match better; their structures through the middle of the ground standing up under the immense pressure of finals football, not allowing Kew any time or space to play their running brand. The Bloods’ forward line was moving well and creating space, goals came easy as they skipped away to four-goal lead at the first change of ends. Kew having wasted vital opportunities in front their own big sticks found it difficult, but didn’t look out of it. In every game every team gets its chance. The difference between winning and losing, so often, is taking those opportunities especially when they come early in the match. Unfortunately for Kew the second quarter brought more of the same inaccuracy, but at least they managed to break even with the TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD

WE’RE SET FOR A CLASSIC After six long months finals football arrived on the weekend. In sublime conditions that would have had any footballer licking their lips, the two semi finals were played out under sunshine and blue skies. From early in the season, it always seemed that these four sides were destined for September football. In reality, Swinburne Uni, South Mornington, Eley Park and Point Cook were heads and shoulders above the rest of the competition in 2012. From as early as May the fate of the remaining six sides were already set. Although Manningham did improve significantly as the season wore on, and North Brunswick were always thereabouts, none of the non competiting sides were realistic finals contenders this year. Pristine conditions greeted the Tigers and Razorbacks clash on Saturday as the two top sides met for the second time inside seven days and for the third time this season. After two spiteful clashes both teams had claimed honours with the ledger one a piece. Saturday was where it would really count. After going down the previous week by the smallest of margins, South Mornington came out all guns blazing kicking the only two goals in a tight opening term. Swinburne let the top seeds off the hook kicking five behinds in the first stanza to waste several opportunities to get into the game. By half time the margin was only a couple of goals in the Tigers favour and it didn’t extend to greatly before the final siren. After a lean second half of the season mainly due to injury and close 22

attention, Tigers spearhead, Jesse Albrecht, found his niche inside the arc to post three majors in a telling contribution for the yellow and black outfit. The sound of the final siren told the story that we have thought of all year. Not much will split these two sides and it will come down to the final minutes of the final game of the year to determine the premier. A single goal was the difference in the end with Nathan Brodie and Scott Smith instrumental in the victory. On Sunday in the first semi final held at Scammell Reserve, third vs fourth met for a spot in the preliminary final. A date with Swinburne Uni was on the menu for the victor of the match, whilst for the vanquished it would be season over. Eley Park and Point Cook were the combatants in similar conditions to the previous day albeit slightly more windy, however compared to recent weeks both sides were given an opportunity to advance to the next stage in ideal conditions for football. The first quarter of this elimination final was as exciting as we could have hoped for. Six goals to five tells the story and by half time there was only a goal in the contest and it looked destined for a classic. How wrong this prediction was. Eley Park came out after half time and belted the Bulldogs. Their six goal to one third term setup the victory beautifully with Edlich, Barry and Viola all finishing with four majors. the difference was 11 goals and should have been far greater with the Shark’s 29 behinds hurting them greatly. 51 scoring shots to 25 told the story after the game. The Sharks are a big chance to challenge the Razorbacks in next week’s preliminary final. Michael Viola was simply sensational for the home side with four goals and a haul of disposals. For the Bulldogs, their successful season didn’t quite last as long as they would have liked but they have plenty to work on in 2013. Today at Scammell Reserve: Eley Park have advanced into the preliminary final where they will face stiff opposition in the form of Swinburne University. As impressive as their performance was on the weekend, the Sharks will have to take their game to another level if they are going to seriously challenge the Razorbacks. I’m predicting a tight affair with the Sharks taking a lead into the final term before being overrun by Swinburne Uni in a classic.

12 MONTHS AGO – 2011 Collegians made up for missing the “minor premiership” by moving straight into the grand final in Premier A by defeating St Bedes/Mentone Tigers 16.8 to 7.16 in the second semi final. Collegians took a firm hold early in the game and maintained control despite the Tigers kicking 2.10 to 1.2 in the third quarter. Best – Holst, Ries (3), Taft (4), Inglis, Croft, Dixon (Coll) and Anstey, Phibbs, Hellier, Shakaib, Collins, Tyquin (StB). The Old Xaverians kept in the race for the flag with and convincing victory in the first semi final over Uni Blues 17.7 to 12.12. Best – Lynch, Handley (7), Goss, Wynne, Rogerson, Purss (Xavs) and Monteith, Hayes, Torney, Maddocks, Watts, Paterson (UB). Caulfield Grammarians firmed into favoritism in Premier B when they stormed home in the final quarter with 7 goals to 1 and a final score of 13.13 to 10.9 against St Kevins in the second semi. Best – Slonim, Shanahan, L O’Keefe (4), Parsons, Wood, Perkins (Caulfield) and Edgar, Keogh, Wissell, Waldron, Marchesani, Murphy (StK). St Bernards were too good for Old Brighton in the first semi 16.15 to 11.13. 5 YEARS AGO – 2007 The Old Xaverians were into another A Section Grand final following their second semi win over Old Brighton. The Xavs had a chance to hold a considerable lead by quarter time but kicked inaccurately (4.6 to 2.1). The final score of 14.18 to 11.12 was clear enough to suggest the Xavs would be very hard to beat again in two weeks time. Best – Johnston, Sapuppo, Handley, Arnold (4), Colbert, Beardsley (OX) and Talbot, Heath, Olliver, Dickerson, Jakobi, Phelan (OB). Uni Blues easily defeated Old Ivanhoe in the first semi 13.14 to 8.7. Uni Blacks were into the B Section Preliminary Final with a strong win over St Kevins 14.7 to 9.13. The 5 goal lead at quarter time was significant for the Blacks. Best – Purcell, M Kempton, Evans (3), Mortenson, P Kempton (3), Lacey (UB) and 42

St Bedes Mentone Tigers were far too strong for their main rivals, Old Essendon, 29.18 to 17.7 in the second semi. Best – Waters, Neville, Groves (7), P Wintle (6), Phibbs, Anstey (StB) and Goullet, Velardo (4), Baddeley, T Biggs, Towner (OE). 10 YEARS AGO – 2002 In a fantastic A Section second semi final, St Bernards led for the majority of the game before a spirited fightback by Old Xaverians made the game a thriller. Trailing by over 7 goals at three quarter time, the Xavs big guns lifted with 7 goals to 1 in the final term before St Bernards held on 15.16 to 15.10. Best – Fielding, D Jordan (7), Smith, Byrne, Thomas Ashton (StB) and Clarke (5), Ford, Blood, Ockleshaw, Landrigan, Wood (OX). It was a much larger margin in the B Section second semi as Old Melburnians defeated Old Haileybury 20.10 to 9.8. Best – Mulquiney, Hawkins (4), Hazell (4), Roberts, Hicks, Mulligan (OM’s) and Carson, McMahon, White, O’Donnell, D Lay, Brooks (OH). St Bedes Mentone Tigers defeated Caulfield Grammarians in the C Section preliminary final 9.10 to 7.13. Best – P Wintle, Beasley, Hecker, Hayes, McColl, M Wintle (StB) and Pearce, Widjaja, Pennycuick, Baxter, Liddell, Fallu (CG). 20 YEARS AGO – 1992 Collegians led De La Salle all day in the A Section second semi final to win 13.15 to 11.13 and seemed primed for a strong tilt at the flag in two weeks time. De La were valiant in the final term but could not penetrate the strong Collegians’ defence often enough to win. Best – Mount (7), Irvine, Hibbins, Galbraith, Schober, Wallace (Coll) and Ronchi, Tully, Campbell, McClounan, Hunter, Mackintosh (DLS). Collegians also won the reserves second semi over St Bernards. Old Brighton were very impressive in the B Section second semi overcoming Old Melburnians 14.11 to 7.6. The Tonners’ second half was power plus. in the D Section Grand Final 13.13 to 11.18 and had to come from behind at three quarter time. It was a special celebration evening for Mazenod who gained the double as the reserves defeated Old Ivanhoe 12.12 to 6.5. Brunswick defeated North Brunswick in the E Section Grand final 7.17 to 6.6. Best – Cross, McCulloch, K Waterson, Hall, B Waterson, Stevens (Brunswick) and Keay, Tirchett, Grimaldi, Thorpe, De Marco, Lirosi (Nth Brunswick). Old Essendon won a thriller in the F Section Grand final over Old Carey by 1 point, 9.7 to 8.12. Best – B Panagiotopoulos, J Panagiotopoulos, Bishop, McEndroe, Souter, McKenzie (OE) and Hughes, Harris, Hickey (4), Daniels, Birti, Hughes (OC). 30 YEARS AGO – 1982 Thomastown were too strong for Balaclava in the E Section first semi 27.14 to 16.15. With 12 goals in the final term Thomastown proved themselves worthy challengers in the weeks ahead. Best – Pace (12), Bell, Tistevski, Steele, Harisiou, A Fellows (Thomastown) and Gregory, Darvall (3), S withers, Crottie, Lotherington, Rafferty (Balaclava). Commonwealth Bank won the F Section first semi against Brunswick 21.17 to 19.17. Best – Collins (5), Baker (6), Rowland, Jewell (4), G Matfin, Van Der Kraan (Com Bank) and Owens (4), Drapac, Bugden, Carroll, Quigley, R Robertson (Brunswick). Best and Fairest winners were – A Section- T Mason (Old Scotch), B Section – A Balcombe (Ivanhoe), C Section – I Rogers (Old Camberwell), D Section – G Griffiths (Parkside), E Section – G Rosewarne (Elsternwick), F Section – L Swann (Clayton). 40 YEARS AGO – 1972 In A Section Old Paradians, after a slow start, defeated Coburg in an entertaining first semi final 22.22 to 16.8. Paradians missed some easy shots on goal but their display in the second half gave every indication of their ability to be a real threat in the remaining games. Uni Blues beat Ivanhoe 13.12 to 7.9 and their stars were Peter Bevilacqua, Bill Maling and Mick Egglestone. Elsternwick defeated Coburg in the C Section second semi final 9.8 to 7.13 and St Kevins took out the premiership in D Section with 10.12 to Caulfield Grammarians 8.14. Old Brighton, were in the end too strong for St Kevins, but they were given a good run for their money the first and last term. Old Brighton did not waste the ball whereas St Kevins had plenty of it but you could have built a house if the wastage was in timber! Both sides had nine goal kickers each but Old Brighton had Charlie King who kicked five. Not sure if he is being called “the difference” by his teammates just yet, perhaps it will be common if he repeats the performance in two weeks time.

Xaverians and then the red and black stormed home to win by 10 points. If you haven’t seen it yet – check out the Old Xavs boys rendition of the song on VAFA TV. De La stormed clear in the second quarter with 7.6 to 0.2 and the game looked done. By three quarter time there had been a seven goal turn around, Old Xavs kicked 9.8 to 3.2 to take a nine point lead into the final change. Seb Gotch back from the seniors snagged six goals for De La with Charlie Haley slotting three but Xavs had more multiple goal kickers in an enthralling battle. Perhaps De La can exact revenge in the Grand Final but they have a Preliminary Final to negotiate first. St Bernards will be De La’s opponent this week as they thrashed St Bedes/Mentone Tigers last week to end their season in the other semi final. The Tigers were within striking distance at half time but the Bernies piled on 8.4 for in the premiership quarter to put the game beyond reach. The margin was an even 10 goals at the final break before it was extended to 81 points at the final siren. Jack Solomon was a handful and also kicked a handful of goals whilst Matt Hutchesson also kicked four and Sam Wood had plenty of footy. St Bernards will go into the Preliminary Final confident and together. They have had a tough year as a club and noting brings you closer than adversity. Good luck to the Bernies today. 44

Werribee v Caulfield Caulfield are in form at the right time and accounted for Werribee’s gun midfield in their 45 point win. Drew Dickson was impressive and Jackson Small kicked five in the win that ends the Tiger’s season. Can the Fields go one further and make the grand final? They face a St Kevins outfit who are up against the wall, but they usually rebound strongly. This week: St Kevins v Caulfield The matches between these side this year have been great value for money. St Kevins have won the three so the good money goes on them but the Fields are hungry and the future of the club is on display so expect a close one. Caulfield will look to Butler, Easton, Stewart, Wren and Malone for drive around the ground while the Skoberrs will want solid games from Holland, Eva, Cellini, Gambaro and Keely. These games bring out the best in Under 19 players and expect a bigger than usual crowd at Central Reserve. Following this game is the Premier Under 19 Prelim and it does not get any better than De La Salle v St Bernards- a classic catholic school hit out with no prize for second! SPRING TIME Ahh! We love it. Spring is in the air which of course means finals. The time for us to put all that hard work of pre-season and cold winter nights into practice and strut our stuff on the big September stage. Just a few tips for some of those more inexperienced umpires stepping into finals action for the first time. First of all, READ BENNY’S BULLETINS. Important information will be there every week with procedures into drawn games etc. Check your appointment carefully. During the finals we play some games at unusual times and venues and they are on BOTH days. On match day arrive early. Be aware that during finals there will be more spectators than you have seen during the year so parking and traffic may be an issue. Seek out your Duty Officer. The Duty Officer needs to be aware that all umpires have arrived at the ground – ON TIME!! Prepare yourself well and ensure you know your team on the day as its likely you’ll meet umpires you haven’t run with during the year. Switch on and focus on the game at hand. If you’ve experienced disappointment, focus on today’s game and NOT the game you think you should have been appointed to. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. Soak it up. The Old Boys We all know that the VAFA is an Old Boys Football Association. Well, it applies to the umpires as well. The geriatrics took the field on Sunday in a D3 final at Box Hill City Oval; Peter (Tugger) Pullen & Paul Jones in the field with Dom Napoli & Anthony Damen in the goals. As we know, appointed goal umpires are supposed to let the field umpires know when they are due back on 50

field after a break, so when Tugger asked AD, (the new boy waving the flags), “how long??” and he noticed that he didn’t have a watch, Tugger asked how are you going to let me know when to come back on when you don’t have a watch? AD responded, “the way Tugger and Jonesey are umpiring I don’t need a watch, I could time it with a Sundial.” Love it!!!!!!!!!!! The New Boys A couple of young boundary umpires were chatting to a couple of learned field umpires on the weekend. “Do we get paid more for doing finals?” “Yes you do.” “Great, do we get paid more for doing grand finals?” “Yes you do.” “Hmm. I suppose we’ll have to start coming to training then”. New gear We had it confirmed last week that we will be sporting new uniforms in 2013. Reserves, Under 19’s & Under 18’s The successful applicants will have a passion for coaching and mentoring a young list with the aim to teach and develop our players into senior footballers.
