PROMOTION AND PREMIERSHIPS Contrasting conditions greeted the players on the weekend. Saturday was cold and windy with cross breezes at the north-south venues used in the VAFA finals. But Sunday was a calm, sunny afternoon allowing players to display their skills in front of large crowds. Congratulations to Uni Blacks, Parkdale Vultures, Peninsula, Prahran Assumption, Ivanhoe and Swinburne University who have gained promotion to Premier, Premier B and C and Division 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Peninsula entered the VAFA in 1980 in the old F Grade and has generally oscillated between Division 1 and 2. The win on Saturday got them into Premier C for the first time. They have played in 6 grand finals and, whilst they have gained promotion, have never raised the premiership cup. Their match against NOB / St Pats promises to be a close encounter after a slender two points separated them in the second semi and each had one win apiece in the home and away season. Parkdale Vultures has shown a resurgence since Sam Radford has taken over the reigns as coach. Brilliant winners in Division 2 last year and convincing winners of last Saturday’s second semi, they have made the double jump and will compete in Premier B for the first time. Prahran Assumption has similarly completed a double promotion after being unbeaten last year. Two successful amalgamations. Premier Section welcomes back University Blacks after a brief appearance in 2008. From all reports they are much stronger than their previous venture and will be looking to make a huge impact next season. However we know the jump to the highest section is the biggest hurdle and in my opinion the standard and depth of clubs in Premier will be at an all time high. Expect continued improvement from Carey and St Bedes

Mentone Tigers, St Bernard’s and Uni Blues will not be satisfied with their positions on the ladder from this year. On Saturday at Sportscover Arena Beaumaris and St Kevin’s will compete for the right join the Blacks in Premier Section. St Kevin’s haven’t won a final since 2004 and Beaumaris have never played in a Premier B preliminary Final since they entered the VAFA in 1995. If successful they will be the first stand alone district club to play in Premier since Ormond were relegated in 1996. Collegians proved they are the team to beat in Premier with a come from behind victory against Old Xaverians. After an initial burst of four goals by Xavs, Collegians outplayed their opponents to eventually run out 38 point victors. Eleven goals to three after half time is evidence of their superiority. De La always held the upper hand against Old Scotch and eventually ran out 20 point winners to gain the right to play Old Xaverians in the Preliminary Final. These two sides have played some tense matches in front of huge crowds in recent years. Whilst the form guide may read better for De La, the side coming off the second semi loss tends to have the better record. We will wait and see on Sunday. The two final promotion matches are in Premier C between Fitzroy and Mazenod and Division 3 between Yarra Valley and UHS-VU. Fitzroy made remarkable progress about 5 years ago and if successful will progress to Premier B for the first time. The loss to Ivanhoe was only Yarra Valley’s second for the year and they will go in as strong favourites to return to Division 2. There are some clubs with real momentum and others reaching their highest sections. Two sides being promoted and relegated really allows clubs who have this impetus to progress through the sections quickly with their current crop of players. However those players cannot shoulder the responsibility forever and new players need to be added to ensure a club survives in the upper echelons of the VAFA.

AND THEN THERE WERE THREE Temptation to jump on board the team that wins the cut throat semi final and abandon the vanquished from the second semi final is strong no matter what level of football you play. De La Salle looked very good accounting for Old Scotch and Old Xaverians didn’t look so good as Collegians kicked away in the last quarter. The problem is the statistics alone tell us that we should never write off the second semi final loser and more so when that team wears red and black. I copped a bit of criticism on twitter last weekend when I tweeted that Old Xavs can’t kick a score. The insinuation was that I had written off Old Xavs this year. That was far from the truth, what is the truth though it that Old Xaverians have failed to kick more than 10 goals in their past five matches. The game against Caulfield in the bog was never going to be a goal fest but after kicking four goals in the opening quarter last Saturday, Old Xavs kicked only five more for the game. What an opening burst it was too. Old Xaverians came out firing and piled on 4.4 to lead 28 to zero inside 20 minutes of the first quarter. Collegians couldn’t get their hands on the ball and players with normally sure hands were fumbling under first, the real pressure and then, the implied pressure that Xavs had created. John Shaw, Matt Ball, Ryan Colbert, and Michael Darvell were winning the centre clearances, and the pressure was applied by the Xaverians forwards to lock the ball in and create scoring chances. Unfortunately they only managed 4.4 in this period of dominance and everyone knew Collegians were never going to go away. At half time there margin had reduced had been cut to 11 points and we were set for a frenetic 2

second half. This is when Collegians made their move. Kicking six goals to three to assume a seven point break with a quarter to play. Old Xavs needed something, but nothing came. Nick Sautner back from a broken leg was getting on the end of everything, Nick Ries continued his prolific season with another three goals and double that in score involvements, and Shura Taft converted twice more for Collegians to take the margin to 38 points at the final siren. Xavs were held to just a behind in the final term as they were restricted greatly by the Lions running backmen of Tardiff, Hylton and Kamenar. De La Salle and Old Scotch looked like being a classic, down to the wire encounter until De La kicked clear in the final quarter. The margin got out to 38 points before three late goals to Old Scotch brought it back to rest at 20 points as the siren sounded on the Cardinals’ season. It was what the least they deserved as Old Scotch were more than a handful all afternoon but the small break that De La Salle established in the second quarter after Old Scotch missed chances in the first term was never really able to be bridged. De La Salle believed they had their best side on the park for almost a year. There were 10 changes from the last time these sides met when Old Scotch humbled the La Sallians at Camberwell a few weeks back. Most of those changes were in the better performers on the day as De La Salle’s disposal wasn’t always perfect, but found targers at critical times allowing them to first alleviate pressure then build an attack, with Brett Eddy, Sam Pickett and Nic Roberts on the end of many moves. Old Scotch fought to be within 11 points at three quarter time and the first goal of the final term would be crucial. up in the arms of Hamish Dick who reduced the margin to a goal. But that would be as close as they got. The sides traded a goal each but the margin was still eight points. A burst of points was followed by a series of goals for De La Salle as they piled on five goals in a row to blow the margin out to 38 points. Old Scotch kicked three late goals to get it back to 19 points but time was their enemy. The final margin finished at 20 points and Old Scotch’s season ended with plenty to look forward to next year.

There is something about a Preliminary Final that conjures more in the imagination than a grand final. We see it in the lower sections of amateur football for the reward is two-fold (promotion and a Grand Final), but in Premier its all about getting a crack at the top prize in the game. Old Xaverians are on a three game losing streak and you would be a brave person to tip them to lose a fourth game in a row. De La Salle returned their up and down season, to the heights of a great team performance and win last week, whether they can hold that performance another week will be the question. Their formline is an unpredictable WLWLWLW.

Back to statistics is the only solution, for that reason Old Xaverians will win on Sunday by 7 points in a low scoring game.

THROUGH TEMPEST AND CALM, FINALS ARE HERE Last weekend’s semi finals were about as contrasting in nature as the weather. Saturday’s ominous black clouds dumped a brutal and systematic pounding over Box Hill City Oval while the warm, still conditions on Sunday at Trevor Barker Oval were close and quite breathless really. The haters might bag Melbourne’s unpredictable climate, but at this magical time of year it heralds what we love the most. Footy in Spring. Last month’s skinny trees have thickened with blossom, there’s the buzz of lawnmowers (pushed by blokes who missed the finals), the trains are chockers with tribal scarves and kids with showbag pride. Green Moon’s running in the fourth at the Valley, there’s a sizzle down at Bunnings and a line of cars snaking into Sportscover Arena. It’s the weekend, in September, in Melbourne. Where would you rather be? OLD MELBURNIANS bow out of the finals race after Sunday’s fighting loss to Beaumaris. Coach Nathan Brown would be gladdened by their vastly improved output over the year with players growing in strength and confidence. Healthy signs for season 2013. SECOND SEMI The Box Hill deck is considered one of the best around town, but conditions were tough and certainly foreboding for St Kevins. The game went according to Uni Blacks’ script; their bigger bodies and power through the rucks and scrimmages forced the footy forward, better equipped as they were for the blustery wind and heavy bursts of rain. Willingham in particular put the ball out into space and followed through in a performance that would have won him the G T Moore had he shown 4

up in round 18. Ahh, coulda-shoulda-woulda! SKOB fought hard regardless but poor ball use added undue pressure, giving their forwards little hope. The backmen were their better contributors, Keely a standout and Brick doing a job on B&F winner Richardson. Sam Bishop kicked their solitary goal in the second term but they never looked like getting a run on. Batten and Delahunty were impressive for Blacks, along with waves of impetus provided by Mahon, Weekley and Lahy. Foster (3) presented well but I daresay there was some cue-inrackage; the eventual eleven-goal margin a moot point with no need for either side to risk injury when the result was beyond doubt. FIRST SEMI In the streaming sunshine and still conditions, a number of crucial Shark inclusions ran out onto TBO to take on Old Melburnians in a thrilling game of end to end footy. Callan Buckley probably shared best afield honours with the evergreen Desi Haynes, while Rob Cathcart’s grunt work and electric final term were pivotal. The first half was tense and pressure-packed; but once the jitters subsided conditions were perfect for a fabulous display of skill and strength. OMs nudged a slight first term advantage, breaking the arm wrestle in the second with a goal to Marangon from a free and 25m penalty. Paule intercepted a handball and slotted another before the main break and OMs looked solid going into the sheds 13 points up. de Fegely had a day out. But the lead was not enough, the quieter Beauy forwards roared out of the blocks with a pair of majors each to Murton, Gower and McBain. Game on, but OMs answered via Bennett (3) powering out of the goal square like a locomotive. Two points split them at the final turn, the huge three-quarter time huddles deafening as they urged their lads on. Petering snapped the first and Hywood responded quickly. The willingness on field was palpable; Petering kicked another, then a snap from Cathcart. Beck got one back but Cathcart slotted his second to effectively seal the game, Beauy into the preliminary final with a 21-point win on the day of the club’s 50th anniversary.

Beaumaris would have to be the in-form favourites for promotion and the right to square off for the silverware, but St Kevins pose an unknowable threat with high-calibre players desperate to return. They are one-all this season: SKOB in a one point thriller in round six, the Sharks winning the return bout in round 12 by three goals. I’m tipping Beaumaris but closer than most expect. Ignore the result at Box Hill, frankly, I’m going with the Sharks because I’ve

PARKDALE EARNS PROMOTION; EAGLES BOW OUT Rarely are the highs and lows of football more evident than when September rolls around. No matter how confident all four teams are of raising the cup, one always has to go home after the first week. On the other hand, another team gains promotion and a week off to recuperate before the grand final. In a wet and blustery day on Saturday at Trevor Barker Oval, it was the Roys who continued their great form from the previous week, to hold a nine-point advantage over the Vultures at quarter time. But from there, it was all oneway traffic, with Parkdale kicking 8.5 to zip in the second quarter, to turn a slight deficit into an almost unassailable lead in thirty minutes. It’s that kind of precision that not only confirms why this team finished on top of the ladder after the home and away rounds, but also gives leaves their shell-shocked opposition wondering what they can do to stop the onslaught. It did slow down in the third quarter, but the scoreboard was still ticking in the wrong direction for those who were hoping for a comeback, or even a tight contest. Lachlan Oakley, in only his third game for the season, reminded everyone why he is such a dangerous player at this level. The Roys simply didn’t have an answer for him, or Matt Boland, who both kicked six goals. At the other end, the Fitzroy forwards were starved for opportunities, going goalless again in the third quarter. The Parkdale machine continued unabated in the final stanza, the class of players like David Robbins and Mark Kidner was evident, as they continued to build on the lead .The Roys live to fight another day and while the performance of players like Josh Vansittart, James O’Reilly and Rory Angiolella is hard to question, they’ve now 6

seen the level that they need to get to, firstly to get another crack at Parkdale; and secondly, if they want to win the flag. The Roy Boys would have been very interested observers in the proceedings at Box Hill. Marcellin and Mazenods had different journeys to reach the first semi final; with the Nodders making their first appearance in the top four on the eve of the finals, while the Eagles were permanent residents after round 4. A difficult game to pick a winner between two very evenly-matched sides, something the final margin indicated. Marcellin got off to the better start, earning a seven point advantage by the quarter time break. They were able to improve on this in the second quarter, with Joel Crimmins, in seasonbest form, leading the assault. He was joined by the recently-crowned Zachariah Medallist, Jarrod Carlson, who was in everything. At the other end, Tim Bourbon was dominating for Mazenod and Stuart Inglis’ best game of the season was coming at the right time. Inaccuracy cost the Nodders, with only one goal from seven scoring shots in the second term to hand the Eagles a 14-point lead at the main break. With the match still very much in the balance, Adrian Connolly urged his troops on and they responded in the premiership quarter, winning their share of the contests and, importantly, converting their chances. The lead was theirs, as they headed into the huddles with the momentum on their side. The final quarter was a classic struggle, everything finals footy TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD

With Marcellin making a final charge, it was a desperate Nodders defence, led by Byron Bonner, that managed to hold tight and keep the score in their favour, when the siren sounded, signalling the end of Marcellin’s premiership dream. Jake Symes, Matty Gasparini, Ash Viney and Peter Augustin were their standouts, though the Eagles failed to find a multiple goalkicker on the day. Last week’s results leave us with Fitzroy and Mazenod fighting for survival, in what should be another epic at Sandingham. They haven’t met in over two months, with the Nodders handing out a nine-goal belting on that occasion, reversing the result from earlier in

the year. Recent form is all with Mazenod, having knocked off two of the top three sides in the past two weeks, while the Roys have the advantage of having the extra day to prepare, along with the experience they gained from playing at Sandy last week. After a horror final three quarters last Saturday, it will be interesting to see if the Roys’ forward line can get back on track, or whether the Nodders will be able to keep the clamps on. With my exposed form on the tips suggesting that both teams would be keen for me to pick the other, my apologies to Fitzroy. I think they will bounce back with a win and book their spot in Premier B for next year.

MUSASHI VAFA TV STRONGEST MAN ANNOUNCED On Monday night three gentle giants of the amateur game descended on Musashi’s state of the art gym in Notting Hill to record the final of VAFA TV’s Strongest Man competition. Will Oakley from Old Geelong was a late call up after a promising lift earlier in the season was restricted to 110kg due to the lack of weights at Old Geelong’s Como Park. Mitch Dupljanin from Eley Park Sharks was the club house leader for a while with a qualifying lift of 130kg and was fired up for a big performance after he had recovered from injured ribs. Stefan Davis from Mazenod was

the last qualifier and set a target of 150kg with his powerful lift. Before the final the players were taken on a tour of the high performance gym including a look at the Bod-Pod and the High Altitude room. The final was contested in an athletics field event format with each competitor allowed three attempts to do three reps of a weight they thought would win it. A CLASH OF TWO TITANS In what seems like the blink of an eye, we have arrived at the season’s denouement. Was it really six months ago that the 10 Division 1 clubs were winding up their pre-season programs, full of hope for the year which lay ahead? The season has whisked past us so quickly. Preliminary Final review: Last week’s penultimate game of the season turned into a disappointingly one-sided affair from the outset. Peninsula’s defence was at its meanest, denying Old Geelong’s powerful forward line any latitude, whilst its midfield was on top of the Hoops’ throughout the contest. Despite triumphing in their two previous meetings, it appeared as if the Oggers had played their grand final in the thrilling over-time win over the Friars, and subsequently had nothing left in the tank. In the blustery conditions at Central Reserve, OGs just could not get into the game, despite the tireless efforts of midfielder Mick Rockefeller. Had the Pirates kicked straighter, their win would have been much greater. Coach Frank Dunnell and his charges would have been left lamenting that Old Geelong had come so far only to cop an 8-goal belting, but the OGs have made giant strides this season, and will now enter 2013 as one of the legitimate Div 1 flag contenders. Today: And now here we are, with the two stand-out teams of the season, both deservedly promoted to Premier C, primed to do battle in the decider which most of us have long expected to take place. Both North Old Boys – St Patrick’s and Peninsula Old Boys have an excellent blend of experience and youth, and 14

boast depth right down to the 22nd player on the interchange bench. This grand final promises to be a corker. 2012’s three previous meetings between the competition’s titans provide interesting reading. The results have produced results which have fluctuated wildly, and do not offer any pointers to today’s contest: Round 2: Peninsula 22.17.149 d NOB-SP 8.13.61. This was NOBs’ only loss for the season, but what a loss it was! Pirates forwards Payze (6 goals), Coghlan (3), and Grigg (3) all managed to get off the leash in this romp at Mt Eliza. Two paltry first-half goals ensured NOBs day was done at half-time, whilst Peninsula stamped themselves as the real deal. NOBSP coach Dick Peoples quickly consigned this game to the dustbin and moved on and his team have not lost since. Round 11: NOB-SP 9.11.65 d Peninsula 3.7.25. NOBs gained revenge for their round 2 loss with a convincing win at their boggy Gillon Oval fortress. The Pirates were surprisingly impotent in attack, managing only three majors for the match. Again, the pattern of the game was set in the first half, with NOBs nullifying any Pirates scoring opportunities. Second semi: NOBSP 8.17.65 d Peninsula 8.15.63. finale with a tough come-from-behind victory in which they booted the last three goals of a tight contest. It was a typical final: not a pretty contest, but tough and uncompromising. Both teams had heaps of opportunities to steal a break, but neither could produce any efficiency in front of goal until NOBSP finally capitalised on a few late chances. Grand final: Thus, the stage is now set for a titanic clash at Trevor Barker Oval. And it could well be across the NOBs half-forward line that the match is won or lost. It will be vital for the Piratesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; chances that their defenders keep NOBs forwards Matt Firman, Todd Patterson, Scott Sleep and Matt Keown (the comp best and fairest) under control. Nothing separates the ruck divisions, led by Peter Shepherd (NOBs) and Brett Brisbane (Pen) respectively, although

the former was crucial in the latter stages of the semi. Likewise, the midfields are evenly matched, and both run deep. Stefan Barbour is a gun, and looms as a real key for the Pirates if he can cap off an outstanding season, whilst for NOBs, sweeping defender Adam Oakley sets up many forward thrusts with his pinpoint kicking. Both teams are well-balanced, and are guided by well-prepared coaching units. Prediction: Amazingly, your scribe has correctly predicted the result of the three finals to date. This grand final has warranted much more deliberate contemplation than the two previous weeks, and I admit to have been swinging back and forth like a pendulum. But I have settled on the refreshed North Old Boys â&#x20AC;&#x201C; St Patricks, just, in a clash which promises everything.

FROM OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE SPECTRUM Separated by an entire division, the 2011 seasons of Bulleen Templestowe and Prahran Assumption couldn’t have been further apart. In Division 1, a 50-point thrashing from Williamstown CYMS would draw a close to Bulleen Templestowe’s worst season in the club’s illustrious history. A solitary win against Old Mentonians standing out among a sea of 100-point thrashings and scoreless quarters. The very real prospect of Bulleen Templestowe completing the maligned “Double Drop” in 2012 seemed all but inevitable. Meanwhile, down in Division 3, a formidable alliance formed in a dusty boardroom the previous year had paid immediate dividends. The amalgam of Prahran Football Club and Assumption College completing a rare flawless season, capped off with the 2012 division 3 premiership flag. In 2012, the clubs would meet in round 1, one club mounting a realistic challenge to play Division 1 football while the other on the brink of absolute catastrophe. Despite an entire division separating the two the previous year, little hope was given to the former Division 1 inhabitants, almost all (this scribe included) predicting a PrahranAssumption Win. What ensued was anything but predictable; Bulleen Templestowe, seemingly in a declaration of their disgust from the previous season, annihilated the Two-Blues by 92 points, putting the competition on notice in the process. While Prahran-Assumption would recuperate 16

from their round 1 and subsequent round 2 losses to (the now relegated) Emmaus St Leo’s, their perceived pre-season hype and dominance had been diluted, their early season form a mere shadow of their 2011 brilliance. In contrast to Prahran-Assumption’s brutal Division 2 hazing, the Bullants had a fairytale start, a loss to Old Paradians the only blemish in the first 9 rounds of the season. The perceived inevitability of a “double drop” replaced with a far more positive notion, colloquially known as the “yo-yo” in VAFA circles. Bulleen Templestowe seemed destined to rejoin their Division 1 counterparts after a brief hiatus. And as it so often does, the season flashed before our very eyes, Bulleen rounding out the regular season in the same fashion it started, a 91-point victory over La Trobe University, a pleasant yet unexpected turnaround from just a meagre 12 months ago. A shock loss to South Melbourne, and a pair of defeats at the hands of Old Paradians the only blights on an otherwise extremely successful season. Bulleen’s Semi Final against Eltham would be a mere formality, on paper, on history and on form, victory was assured for the men in yellow and blue. A comfortable 59-point victory the outcome. On the other end of the spectrum, PrahranAssumption’s gruelling finals campaign has been anything but a formality, forced to come from behind in both matches to snatch victory TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD

BEFORE TODAY It’s fair to say that the quote “finals footy brings out the best in football teams” is an overstated one. So I’ll change it up a bit. I can only liken the brilliance that has been served up so far in the Division three finals campaign to a delicious lamb cutlet, served with a side of minted potato salad and a glass of heavily malolactic fermented red. Easily the best game was played between Uni High and Aquinas. It came down to the final kick of the day. No matter the amount of rubbish I write in my column this week, nothing will come close to describing exactly what went down. Regrettably time has come to send Aquinas on their way, while Yarra Valley would want to be careful, a repeat of last seasons finals performance may just tip a few over the edge. I feel the Bushrangers can take solace in the words (Aerial Pink) Rosenberg blurted, in his 1999 classic ‘Round and Round’“I’m afraid, you’re afraid. And we die and we live and we’re born again, turn me inside out”. What can I say? And so under bright-lit blue skies Uni High and Aquinas competed in one of the better games of the season. I’m sure no one would have predicted the game to come down to the final kick of the day, but as so often happens in finals neither team could land a fatal blow until the very end. Aquinas’ John Jess lined up. The kick had a lot riding on it. One team was to go through to a preliminary final and the other to ‘Mad Monday’. This isn’t life and death, but sometimes, in games like this it sure feels like it. Unfortunately for the Bloods JJ hooked it to the left, leading to jubilant scenes from the Uni team. Ironically it had been a day that had started so accurately for Aquinas. They flew out of the blocks kicking eight goals straight in the first 20

quarter, while Uni could only manage 4.4 from their eight scoring shots. It was more of the same in the second, Uni wasting opportunities, while Aquinas kicked truly. The game was well into the second half before Uni began to peg back the substantial difference that the Bloods had put between them and they managed to get within a kick at the final change. The last quarter was a finals classic. Both sides had a chance to sink the other, but couldn’t get the job done. The lead changed several times and when Jack Price kicked his third it looked as though the Bloods would hang on. But a few behinds from Uni pinned the lead back their way. Thus, a final kick was taken and the rest, history. I should’ve known by now that Uni High would be on my list. The pundits had been spruiking them for a while, “let me show you, how much I care”, they said. I hope they’re not too offended by my Port Adelaide circa 2001 comments last week. In the other game Ivanhoe re-wrote the script with an amazing final quarter. Yarra Valley have been the flag favourites from about round four, but on Saturday, their seemingly untouchable status took a hammering. It was pretty stock standard Yarra Valley up to three quarter time. They lead at the half by 23-points and held Ivanhoe to a four goal to two third quarter despite Ivanhoe kicking with a three to four goal breeze. TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD

The Bushies looked for all money to be sailing to a grand final and a promotion to Division 2. But the Ivanhoe boys had other plans. Kicking into that disadvantageous breeze in the last the Hoers rallied, but with only ten minutes to play they were still two goals down. Brandon Flowers once sung, “when your chips are down, when your highs are low, joy ride”. Whether the Ivanhoe boys have heard that tune or not, joy ride they did, they managed to use these words to overcome the giant that is Yarra Valley. Two quick goals saw Ivanhoe draw level and then another saw them take the lead when the last whistle blew. It really was amazing stuff. With usual suspects Close, Harris and Harty firing, Ivanhoe will be very hard to beat in two weeks time. This week: What can I say? I can’t see Yarra Valley getting beaten, even though UHS-VU has been so impressive through this finals series.

THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE WINNER After eighteen home and away rounds, three finals and a total of 93 matches, we have finally reached the two hours that matter most. We know what many of us thought all year South Mornington and Swinburne Uni were by far the best two sides in Division Four. Regardless of what happens on Saturday, they will both be promoted into Division 3 in 2013 come the final siren. These two sides have already battled on three separate occasions in 2012 with the most recent only being two weeks ago in the first semi final where the Tigers got the job done by only six points. For the majority of the year, South Mornington has been the front runners. Seemingly unbeatable after winning the first twelve games of the season. Yet after two losses in the final six games, the boys in yellow and black from down the Peninsula looked a little bit fragile. Whilst they have seemingly reclaimed their ascendancy after their win in the semi final, the Tigers form is not quite as devastating as it was earlier this season. As for their grand final opponents Swinburne University, the Razorbacks have appeared to gather momentum as the season progressed. Not simply by the number of victories they accumulated but rather by the manner in which they chalked up their wins in the second half of the year. In Saturday’s preliminary final, the students ran over the top of Eley Park in the second half to book their place in the grand final. The Razorbacks led by only two goals at half time before kicking away in the premiership quarter. Seven goals to just two behinds was enough to do the damage. Another five to one in the final stanza was simply the icing on the cake as the Sharks simply had no more to give in a disappointing display. 22

The 86 point belting doesn’t do the Sharks justice for the sort of season they have had. In fact, they have transformed from an inconsistent side capable of producing moments of brilliance into a consistent four quarter team that can match it with anyone. Unfortunately it just wasn’t their day and I’m sure they will return next season and be a massive premiership contender. South Mornington and Swinburne University have met three times this season. In round nine, the final round of the home and away season and in the first semi final. The Tigers hold the edge over the Razorbacks with two victories to one. In their first meeting back in June, the unbeaten Tigers knocked off the students in a comfortable fashion by 44 points down at Citation Oval. It was a different story in round eighteen but only by the smallest of margins. By the end of the home and away season, the Tigers form had begun to waver and they were caught out at St James Park. After leading by as much as five goals in the opening term, the Tigers were left to lick their wounds on the way back down the coast. In the semi final, only a week after their final round showdown, South Mornington got the better of their rivals in a tight tussle at Scammell Reserve. Inaccurate goal kicking almost hurt the yellow and black on that day but they were good enough to get over the line by a kick to advance straight to the grand final and earn the week off. CLUB WAREHOUSE RISING STAR 2012 WINNER OF CLUB WAREHOUSE RISING STAR Lachlan Ferguson (Collegians) Nominated in Round 17, Lachlan had been putting together a brilliant season to that point and could have been nominated any number of weeks prior. In 2012 he played 14 games in 2012 and has averaged more than a goal a game this year in the top team in Premier section, being named in the best players multiple times. Lachlan is a product of Wesley College and was a standout player in their 2010 APS premiership side. Throughout 2010 he was given a number of opportunities at Collegians when school commitments allowed and played some very good football in the senior side. In fact he was very close to being selected in the 2010 A Grade Grand Final side. In 2011 he carried on his good work and despite a hip problem became a very dangerous half forward capable of winning a game off his own boot. He played in the 2011 Premiership side and was one of the best on ground with three great goals. A hip operation over summer saw a delayed start to the season, but early form warranted Senior Big V selection for the game against AFL NSW where he won the coveted spirit of the Big V award. He followed that up with selection in the Vic Under 23 side and but for injury would have been selected in the Vic Under 19 side. He is on track to play an integral part in Collegians 2012 defence of the Premier Section Premiership. * to be eligible for the club Warehouse Rising Star, a player must be born no earlier than 1991 and playing his first full season of senior football. 12 MONTHS AGO – 2011 The C Section preliminary final was a blow out when AJAX played magnificently against Old Camberwell 28.16 to 10.5. Best – Steinberg (3), Lew (9), Jankie, Winograd, Routman, Measey (AJAX) and Tolson, Deev, Le Cerf, Kapoor, Killwirth, Carlyle (Old Camberwell). Parkdale Vultures were too good for Banyule in the Division 1 Grand Final 16.8 to 8.14. It was all over by three quarter time. Best – Hayward, Kelleher, Redmond, Oakley (7), Ryan (5), Grant (Parkdale) and Cusack, Christian, Dillon, Shepherd, Barclay (3), Brown (Banyule). Luke Holmes was voted “Umpire of the Year” at the VAFAUA’s annual dinner; Jayde Daly was awarded the “Most Promising Umpire” award. St Johns won the Division 2 Grand Final 11.18 to 6.10 and the result was a shock to many who thought Glen Eira to be a certainty. Best – Phaedonas, O’Connor, Gaget, Dyker, Scott (5), Chalk (StJ) and Mills, Spink, Waras, Carstensen, Diamond, Higgins, King (GE). 5 YEARS AGO – 2007 Old Brighton defeated University Blues to gain another crack at Old Xaverians in the A Section Grand Final. The Blues trailed by 5 goals at half time and the difference increased as the game wore on; final score 13.15 to 6.12. Best – Hendra, Hughes, Jakobi, Pirrie (5), Gadsden, Dickerson (OB) and McKinnon, Knowles, Steele, Gleeson, Watts, O’Riley (UB). Uni Blacks earned their spot in the B Section Grand Final when they won the preliminary against Old Essendon 18.13 to 13.5. Best – Batten, M Kempton, Vanderloo (5), Costello, Symon, Purcell (Blacks) and Skurrie (6), Day, D Biggs, Goullet, Ward, Clifton (OE). Oakleigh won the D1 Section flag against Hampton Rovers 19.10 to 8.11 and probably had the game sewn up at quarter time with 8.2 to 2.4. Best – Britt, Harold, Bromley (6), Counihan, Holden, Fitzgerald (Oakleigh) and Dallas, Malthouse, Duddy, Carr, Zampaglione, Deboer (HR). It was South Melbourne Districts’ year when they defeated Aquinas Old collegians in the D2 Grand Final 18.16 to 10.12. The Districts’ 8 goal first term was the difference. Best – Aquilina, Jess, E Costello, Mahoney, Cronan (3), Cheevers (SMD) and J Jess, Olarenshaw, Toomey, Williams, Cooper, Lorkin (Aquinas). 42

Old Westbourne were the deserving D3 Premiers following their great win over Ivanhoe 14.20 to 7.11 after trailing at half time by 3 points. Best – Connors, Hunter, Pavez, Connors, Fairfield, Smith (OW) and Crapper, Lynacoln, Rawley, Brown, Meredith, Pye (Ivanhoe). 10 YEARS AGO – 2002 The U19 Section 1 preliminary final between Old Brighton and Old Xaverians was a very tight contest until half time with Brighton holding an eleven point lead. Brighton broke away in the third term with 7 goals to 2 and despite a fight back from the Xavs, Brighton won 12.5 to 8.10 and would meet St Kevins in the Grand Final the following week. Best – Hughes, Mentiplay, J Salem, Ryan, Peel (4), Adamis (OB) and Fox, Hardwick, Lourie, Bowen, Doxey (4), Heeley (OX). The A Section preliminary final looked headed for an upset at half time as Old Scotch led Old Xaverians 8.6 to 4.7. The third quarter was all Old Xavs with 8.7 to no score by Scotch. Despite having the advantage of the wind in the final term, Scotch could not make up the 7 goal deficit and with a 14.18 to 10.9 victory, Old Xaverians would have the opportunity in a week’s time to become the only club in A Section to win 7 out of a possible 8 premierships at the top level. Best – Ockleshaw, Dillon, Brushfield, Landrigan, Richardson (6), Orlando (OX) and Finocchiaro, Breisch, Saunders, Crow Nettleton (3), Ross (OS). Peter James and Mark Gibson were the central umpires. It was a similar situation in B Section with an even game in the first half before Old Haileyburians turned up the heat on North Old Boys to charge to a 15.18 to 6.16 victory in the preliminary final. Best – Bourke, Brooks, Jenke, S Lay, O’Farrell, Armstrong (OH) and Collison, Hosking, Eastaugh, Sanders, Fitzclarence, Faraci (NOBS). Whitefriars Old Collegians won the C Section premiership 20.14 to St Bedes Mentone Tigers 13.15 in a high standard contest. Best – Northey, R Pawlik (3), A Pawlik, Pasqualotto, Power, Swain (Whitefriars) and A Hayes (3), S Kidd, P Wintle, Beasley, M McCraw, S Hecker (StB). Tim Sutcliffe and Wayne Hinton were the central umpires. Matthew Power was the Michael Ritterman Medalist for his best on ground performance. Michael Ritterman from the AJAX Amateur Football Club was a champion player who won VAFA Best and Fairest awards in B, C, D and E Sections as well as having been a member of the Victorian Carnival team in 1976 and a dual premiership captain for his club. 20 YEARS AGO – 1992 De La Salle jumped St Bernards and were never THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2012

headed in an entertaining preliminary final in A Section. Pat O’Callaghan was the tall target for De La and worried the Bernie’s defence to finish with 3 goals. Craig Wright was dashing as usual across half back and although Andrew Ronchi battled hard, he found it difficult to handle Wayne Carey’s expertise in the ruck. Luke Gollant was strong for St Bernards but the three quarter time advantage of five and a half goals would be difficult to overcome. And so it was as De La ran out winners 13.11 to 11.8 and gained the right to challenge Collegians the following week. Best – Wright, Campbell, Fiume, Ronchi, Toohey, Hunter (DLS) and Carey, Mallia, Walsh, L Gollant, Comito, Overman (StB). Old Trinity won their way into the B Section Grand final when they defeated Old Melburnians in a low scoring affair 5.10 to 3.12. Best – Hedley, Hopkins, Beardsley, Alibon, Hudson, Dunn (OT) and Rose, Nelson, O’Brien, Teal, Bryan, Webb (OM’s). The talented Fawkner team easily won the C Section Grand Final against Bulleen Templestowe, 16.17 to 6.5. Fawkner kicked 14.10 to 3.5 after quarter time. Best – Lawson, Mitchell, Hoare, McMahon (3), Hall, O’Leary (Fawkner) and Cumming, Harisiou, George, Philpots, Driver, Tulloch (Bulleen Templestowe) 30 YEARS AGO – 1982 In A Section strong rivals North Old Boys and De La Salle staged a typically tough yet fast and furious affair in the second semi final. NOBS led by 4 points after an exciting first half but it was De La who finished the stronger to win 15.13 to 10.17 at the final siren. Best – Maher (4), Williams (3), McDonnell, Bourke, Franetic, Greene (DLS) and Welch, Griffin, O’Rourke (3), Clark, Conti, Ryan (NOBS). The B Section second semi was a game of two halves with Old Melburnians leading 10.4 to 8.7 at half time and Ivanhoe taking out the second half and more importantly the match 19.13 to 17.10. Best – McDonald, Balcombe, Simondson, Field, Hoare, Stewart (Ivanhoe) and Morphet, J Thompson, Mitchell, Brown, Knight, Trumble (Old Melburnians).

Reservoir Old Boys continued their rise up through the ranks with a resounding victory in the C Section Grand Final over Assumption Old Collegians 18.13 to 11.9. The 10 goal second quarter by Reservoir broke the back of the Assumption defence. Best – Devlin (6), Bates, R Shepherd, S Aston, J Paulka, Dowell (ROB) and Lewis, Duro, Phillips, Kelly, Avery, Nugent (Assumption). Parkside won a thrilling D Section Grand final over Old Brighton 15.12 to 14.17 in a match with never much more than a goal in it. Best – Ridd, Sammut (4), Graham Dryden (3), P Harvey, Eames, Elliot (Parkside) and Watkins, Mullett, Templeton, Agar (4), McBriar (4), Kemp (Old Brighton). 50 YEARS AGO – 1962 Melbourne High School Old Boys won their way into the A Section Grand final with a convincing win over Collegians in the A Section preliminary final with a strong finish 8.13 to 6.7, four of their goals coming in the final quarter. Best – Turnbull, Birch, Macdonald, Pascoe, Nelson, Hance (MHSOB) and Rowe, R Daff, Evans, G Hibbins, Sanders, R Walduck (Collegians). Kew won the C Section premiership with a score of 6.19 to West Brunswick 8.3 in the Grand final. Best – Williams, Fletcher, Taylor, Blay, Haigh, Winton (Kew) and Nash (5), D Strachan, Tuner, Park, Grinter, Johnston (West Brunswick). Fairfield won the D Section premiership 7.14 to Old Carey 3.2. Best – O’Dwyer, Collier, Rodwell, Pearce (3), Urobst, Hume (Fairfield) and Edwards, Dunshea, Linthorne, Poole, Sedman, B Murray (Old Carey).

Old Paradians defeated Caulfield Grammarians in the A Section preliminary final 13.27 to 10.14 and Paradians inaccuracy in front of goal was highlighted by their 5.11 in the final term. Caulfield had actually led at the first three breaks due to Parade’s poor ‘sharpshooting’. Best – J Tudor, Carroll, Bahen, Duke, Lyons, Tomkins (Paradians) and Williams, Lester (3), P McLaughlin, G Tootell, Long, Fox (Caulfield).

Uni Blues led all day to win the A Section preliminary final 16.9 to Commonwealth Bank 11.9 and would meet Ormond the following week.

The B Section preliminary was won by Ivanhoe at the expense of University Blacks 18.10 to 11.22. Best THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2012

MHSOB defeated Ivanhoe in the B Section Grand final 6.11 to 5.7 and had come from behind to win the premiership. Elsternwick defeated East Malvern in the C Section preliminary final 9.9 to 7.13 and Old Scotch defeated Ormond in the Juniors Grand final 13.9 to 12.6. 43

For the 4 year in a row, the Under 19 Premier Grand Final will be contested between De La Salle & Old Xaverians. The two powerhouses of VAFA junior football have got a great history against each other and this Saturday’s final will no doubt add another great chapter. Will Xavs go back to back or will De La get revenge for their loss in the 2011 Grand Final. De La Salle won through the the Grand Final in comprehensive fashion with an 87 point win over St Bernards in last week’s Preliminary Final. Hugh Nicholson was the star up forward with nine goals with Dan Convery showing good form around the ground. For St Bernards it is the end of the line in 2012, but it has been a very good season with the last weeks all about honouring their lost mate Harry Overman. Grand Final Preview – De La Salle v Old Xaverians The Xavs and De La have met three times this season, each game being decided by fewer the 3 goals with the Red & Black saluting each time. In two of those games De La have been in match winning positions, leading by 6 goal margins but Xavs have clawed back into the contest and managed to snatch victories, the most recent of these of course in the 2nd Semi Final two weeks ago. The match will see two quality midfields to lock horns, for the Xavs, Denton, Batten & Pat Monti against Harry Haley, Gotch & Hamilton. De La’s ruckmen, Paul Johnson will look to give his midfield first use of the ball and Xavs will need to be at their best to counteract this. 44

Both forward lines are also in good form, with Nicholson kicking nine and Howard bagging four against St Bernards in the Prelim, then there’s Charlie Haley winning the leading goal kicker medal and being on of the premier players in the competition. Robbie Ralph has a had a great year and will be heavily watched by the De La backmen and Nick Sharkey, who kicked 6 for the Xavs in the round 18 clash will need close attention too. It will be a cracking game out at Central Reserve on Saturday afternoon with the two powerhouse teams of this competition fighting it out for the ultimate prize. My tip is for De La to reverse the result of two weeks ago and take the flag by 16 points. UNDER 19 Premier GRAND FINAL De La Salle v Old Xaverians

Section 2 During the season the sides met three times and the Skobbers won all three in tight finishes. What a game - a very high standard in all areas and played in great weather. Both sides had opportunities to take control. Caulfield led by eight points at quarter time, St Kevins by nine at the main break and eight at three quarter time. The last quarter was amazing - the Skobbers kicked one goal then Caulfield came and came and came again – kicking nine goals to the Skobbers three, to run out 24 point winners. To add insult to injury the Skobbers kicked 11.21 and had 32 scoring shots to 26. St Kevins had every chance to put them away but just could not nail them. on both sides but Caulfield deserved the win and will take on Old Brighton in this week’s Grand Final. Grand Final Preview – Old Brighton v Caulfield

Final with the two inform sides of the section. Northern Blues will be wondering where it all went wrong after a dominant season fell away at the end. Grand Final - Mazenod v Collegians

By The Phantom: This clash is a bit like the Geelong v Fremantle clash - All the money is on Old Brighton but Caulfield could get up in a fairy tale finish from fourth spot. In every game everyone has a chance, in this case Old Brighton hold the cards but Caulfield are into ‘take a chance and see what rolls out.” Both sides are loaded with talent but Caulfield are in form with two great final wins and will run the game out. It’s important to be trained for the moment and the Fields will certainly be primed for the day! Josh McCahon has done a great job and should be Section 2 coach of the year, for getting to the grand final from 4th spot! Old Brighton have been the form side all year but the punters love an under dog finish so I am going for Caulfield.

The Grand Final pits two sides against each other that are very even, so much so that scores were level at the final siren in a night match in round 9. After leading for most of the game, Collegians gave up a lead but Mazenod couldn’t get the points. In the second meeting it was and 11 point victory for Mazenod as they got over a Collegians side that was short on their key movers that day. So where does that leave us? Mazenod have had the easier ride into the Grand Final but Collegians have been coming for the past few weeks too. Considering some of the talent on display this should be a ripping game starting at 11.15am at Scammell reserve on Sunday, and I lean to Collegians by 12 points.

As expected in this column last week, Collegians accounted for Northern Blues in the Preliminary Final to set up a Grand Final clash with Mazenod. Collegians trailed by 2 points at the first break but turned it on in the second quarter to run out winners by 39 points. Nick Blackney kicked three goals and Lindsay Apted two with best afield honours to setup a Grand

It’s hard to believe that Ivanhoe have gone out in straight sets but now that it is on paper it must be true. Ivanhoe dropped three games for the year then lost two in a row going down to Old Geelong in the Preliminary Final by three goals. The OG’s now have the right to secure the club’s second premiership this season when they take on Williamstown CYMS in the

It’s hard to get a read on how the final will go but I tend to lean towards the hooped men who are riding the wave of club success this year. South De La Salle thrashed Peninsula in the Preliminary Final to move into a Grand Final match against Parkdale Vultures at Central Reserve at 9.15 Saturday. De La led the Pirates all day with Matt Hogan kicking four goals and Jack Hanley three. The Grand Final will be an interesting battle as Parkdale and De La Salle have both handed out their fair share of thrashings for their opponents this season. Parkdale won the last battle between these sides in the second semi a fortnight ago by 18 points. NEARLY THERE The VAFA was engulfed by finals fever last weekend and of course, us umpires were in the thick of it. As the clubs strive for premierships and promotion to a higher grade, the umpires strive for that grand final medallion. The aim is usually to achieve something a little better and more rewarding than the previous year. There are always plenty who miss out because quite simply there are not enough grand finals to go around. But to those members who have put the whistle or flags away for the summer we thank you for your involvement this year. If you’ve had disappointment, don’t spit the dummy.

Come back, work hard, listen to your coaches and see where it takes you. We hope to see you back in 2013 striving to reach that ultimate goal. As we mentioned last week, ensure you read BENNY’S BULLETINS. Important information will be there that shouldn’t be missed. Grand Final Lunch As usual the VAFAUA will be holding its Grand Final Day Luncheon in the social rooms. It kicks off at 11 on Premier grand Final Day September 23rd. Guest speaker will be Carlton premiership player and current GWS backline coach Peter Dean. We’re sure all the Carlton supporters in the room will re-live that third quarter smother against the Cats which turned the game and handed the Blues a big win in the 1995 AFL Grand Final.
