BIG V FACE STORM WITH VALOUR For those who escaped the Melbourne winter for warmer climes over the two week break, you can be assured that the wind, rain and sub-ten degree temperatures were all alive and well in Hobart and Bendigo for our representative games. And whilst success on the field proved evasive at both venues, the players who wore the Big V did so with pride and distinction in all games. Our U23 squad played four carnival matches in Hobart: three abbreviated games at North Hobart Oval and a full game at Blundstone Arena. In the three shortened games we played Tasmania on Thursday, followed by Western Australia and South Australia on Friday. In slippery conditions we accounted for Tasmania, but were outplayed by both Western Australia and South Australia, which relegated us to the Saturday play-off for third against our hosts. In our play-off for third place at Blundstone we relished the conditions and the longer format, running out winners by 101 points. And in the main game, South Australia remained undefeated in the carnival with a comfortable victory over Western Australia. We congratulate five of the squad for making the All-Australian team: Simon Caven, Gabe Hamilton, Kelvin Williams (St Kevin’s), Tom Quinn (University Blues) and Josh Cowan (Mazenod). Josh Cowan deservedly won the Spirit of the Big V award. And congratulations must go to Tom Windlow, who was named the All-Australian umpire at the carnival. If we thought it was cold in Hobart, we were in for a rude awakening when we took three sides up to Bendigo last Saturday to play AFL Vic Country teams. The rain started falling in the U19 game at 10.15 and didn’t really relent until the conclusion of the open game at 6.30, which finished under a dark and miserable sky. Unfortunately, in all three games the VAFA was outplayed by well-structured
and talented Vic Country outfits. In the U19 game, the coaching team and the on-field leaders did well to keep the spirits and endeavour of the players up and the 49 point deficit at game’s end was not a true reflection of the difference between the two sides. The Spirit of the Big V went to Michael Caven. In the Premier B to Division 4 match against the second Vic Country team, the final score-line (a 29 point win to Vic Country) once again did not reflect the intensity of the game, especially around the seemingly never-ending stoppages. It was incredibly pleasing to see 15 clubs represented within the side. Anthony Lynch was a worthy Spirit of the Big V recipient. And in the main game, Vic Country was again too strong, winning by 62 points after kicking away in the third quarter. The Vic Country full forward kicked seven goals in an outstanding display of wet-weather football and ex-AFL player, Dean Polo, was named as the opposition’s best player. Gabe Hamilton capped off a wonderful two weeks by winning the Spirit of the Big V award. Mention must also be made of the three VAFA representative field umpires at Bendigo, Matt Clinton, Peter Bailes and Merv Monty; along with the boundary umpires, Liam Kelliher, Hamish McCartney, Damian Laing, Jack Punshon, Sam Beer, and Matthew Watkinson; and the goal umpires, Michael Driver, Clayton Evans and Patrick Dwyer. Special thanks to the many support staff who gave of their time to the representative program, including team managers, trainers, watercarriers and time-keepers. And thanks also to the numerous parents, partners and friends who braved the elements in Hobart and Bendigo to support our players.

LOOK OUT, HERE COME DE LA It’s been a long time between drinks for those of us yearning for club football. The two-week break requires a reality TV style recap. A few columns back I consigned De La Salle to Premier B footy in 2016. It still may prove correct, and yes it’s dangerous to make an early call on a club’s future in William Buck Premier, but it’s better than having splinters in your backside. Isn’t it? De La Salle has shown great guts and determination in the past fortnight in trying to extract themselves from the bottom two. Goal 1 has been reached with De La moving from the bottom of the table, leapfrogging Beaumaris as they recorded back to back wins for the first time this year. De La Salle’s win over University Blues was no surprise to many of our radio brethren, as all foresaw a victory for the visitors on Clash Jumpers on Saturday morning. Coaches will guard inhouse secrets like Fort Knox, but one thing remains the same, scoreboard pressure. In the past fortnight, De La Salle has scored more goals after half time than they had in the first half. De La Salle, have proven to be good starters this year –Beauy the exception – often leading more fancied teams at the main break before a second half capitulation. Again they started well and more importantly carried on after the break to beat Blues on their own patch. Forato has been immense the past few weeks and he shone again here. Equally Ross Young has had a purple patch of late and again he tried tirelessly for Blues. In the end, De La’s midfield exerted their influence over Blues and that was that. Old Carey’s hold on third spot had been weakened in recent weeks and a loss at Old Xaverians would have seen them slip from the four. The game was played on the Roche Oval of Xavier College and Xavs have been almost unbeatable in recent seasons when they have returned to school. Matt Handley created problems for the Old Carey defenders and where he was taking marks, Carey’s forwards weren’t. A half time lead of four goals crept to almost five at one point but a late Carey goal before three quarter time had them within range. Old Carey’s pressure on the 2
ball carrier lifted in the second half and shone like a beacon in the final term as they piled on five goals to none to steal a win that kept them locked into third spot. Sam Cust set up much of the play for the Panthers as they stormed home, whilst Rimmington and Howat were responsible for much of that increased pressure. In a sad note, Luke Ball – playing his second game – hurt his knee in the final term as an opponent fell across it. His own analysis on 3AW on Saturday night was that it was a minor medial strain, but scans will reveal more. Here’s hoping that his Xavs career is not over just yet. Beaumaris took the game to St Bernards early at the Aquarium before the Snowdogs ran riot after half time to record their biggest win of the year. Tom Sullivan was a standout with five goals fro midfield, whilst Chad Jones wreaked his own havoc with four goals. It was the consummate performance from Anthony Rock’s men. Holding the Sharks to four goals, whilst maintaining their own attacking form at the other end. Beaumaris will be disappointed; two second half fade outs in two weeks has not been their habit this year and a two week break comes at a good time for them. If there were any question marks about Old Trinity, it was that they hadn’t really buried a side this year. Well you can strike that from the record now. The T’s blew Collegians off the Daley Oval with a fifteen goal to seven second half as they kicked their biggest score of the year. Ed Weatherson kicked four goals, but it was again the team performance that stood out. Eleven Old Trinity players kicked goals. Andrew Kyriacopoulos has lifted his game in the absence of Iezzi and again more new names featured in the best players as a new batch step up to take the load. For Collegians, their form run was rudely interrupted WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER — TIPS IN BOLD University Blacks v Old Trinity Old Carey v Beaumaris Collegians v Old Xaverians St Bernard’s v Uni Blues De La Salle v Old Scotch

by the Queen’s Birthday and perhaps the next break might see a reverse in fortunes again. University Blacks again fired strongly in the first quarter and the only surprise was that Old Scotch weren’t prepared for this. Since Blacks commenced winning again, they have only lost one first term. In their last three matches, Blacks have averaged at least five goals in the opener. The fact the Cardinals won the game after quarter time should not be lost on Old Trinity who the Students confront after the mid season break. Alistair Robbins again shone with four majors, whilst Simon Hogan distributed plenty of football through midfield for Blacks. Sam Barnett did his utmost with four goals of his own and Jack Bull is playing his best footy yet for Old Scotch, he is just one or two mates short at this stage.

So whom does the break suit? If you are a good enough player you might not have had a break at all. The U23 Carnival in Tassie has been run and won, and the VAFA’s full card of representative matches against AFL Vic Country experienced a miserable Bendigo afternoon. Well done to all William Buck Premier players that represented the Big V. Well done to all those that managed an overseas escape to warmer climes. I’m not sure really what it will do for our premier ten. There will be winners and losers and no doubt the break will be used as an excuse or a rejuvenation depending on your circumstances. All we know is there are seven weeks left save yourself, make history, or lock in your best possible chance of making a run in September. It’s great to have the footy back.

SKOB RISE AND RISE AGAIN AS THEY DISMANTLE TIGERS Round 11 saw some old-fashioned beltings handed out in Premier B, as three of the four top sides flexed their muscles. Now that we are entering the latter half of the season, teams are starting to play each other a second time around, and it is always fascinating to watch to see if the result will be any different. So far, out of ten rematches, eight have been won by the same team twice. Mazenod and Hampton faced off at Central Reserve, having both lost their last three games. The Nodders were looking to avoid a repeat of their previous meeting, which was a 69-point victory to the Rovers in Round 1. Mazenod went into the game missing two of their regular goalkickers Jarrod Dalton and Jeremy Devlin. The Rovers got off to a dream start, posting their highest first-quarter score of the season and setting up a seven-goal lead. The Rovers debuted four players and got good value from Harry Hill (two goals) and Christian Carnovale was also among the best. Unfortunately for the Rovers, they were unable to follow up their big first quarter. They only managed one goal in each of the next three quarters and the Nodders slowly chipped away at the deficit but could not quite bridge the gap, leaving them in ninth position, one game clear of Caulfield. Ben Phibbs (three goals) and Josh Cowan again stood up for the Nodders. I’d imagine the folks at Brunswick Street would have been in good spirits during the week after the Roys fantastic, yet unsuccessful, effort against Premier B leaders St Kevins in Round 10. Having said that, they would have been keen to back it up when they travelled to take on AJAX, who have had an inconsistent month and are proving hard to tip. The Roys fell three points short of the Jackas when they met in Round 3. Geoff Measey and Richie Simon, both of whom had good fortnights, were out of the Jackas team but they had a couple of handy “ins” in Adam Caplan and Jake Lew. Lew ran riot against the Roys on this day and kicked six goals. Fitzroy struggled to find an avenue to goal, and failed to kick a goal in the first half while the Jackas kicked nine, to lead 57-3 at the main break. The Roys narrowly won the second half but finished 4
on the wrong end of an eight-goal result, which would have been disappointing as it stopped the momentum they had been building up over the last month. David Fayman and Alex Wollan were influential again for the Jackas, and the win moves them up to sixth. Old Melburrnians had won two in a row coming into Round 11 and looked to continue their winning form at home against Parkdale, no doubt keen to atone for their Round 4 match, which saw the Vultures triumph by two goals. The game looked like being a shootout, as the two teams went to quarter time having kicked 11 goals between them. The rest of the game belonged to the OMs, thanks largely to a season high eight goals in the second quarter. They added ten goals to four in the second half to run out with an 87-point victory and outright second on the ladder. Gus Borthwick (3), Tom Hywood (2), Josh Freezer (1) all returned for the Redlegs and made an impact, while Tim Taranto and Nathan Peterson contributed four goals for the Vultures in their first games for the season. St Kevins hosted their nearest challenger St Bedes/ Mentone in a top-of-the-table clash, the return fixture of the Round 1 game where SKOB claimed an exciting four point victory. The ladder leaders opened up a small advantage at quarter time, and unleashed an eight-goal blast in the second quarter to hold a six-goal halftime lead. The Tigers won the third quarter but were still a long way back at the last change. Unfortunately for the Tigers the SKOBs did what they have done so often this season and found an extra gear in the final term, kicking nine goals to one to claim a 92–point victory. The SKOBs again had multiple contributors with twelve individual goalkickers. There were also several handy inclusions, with Steven Salopek returning to be best-on-ground and big man Gerard Gleeson PREMIER B — TIPS IN BOLD Old Brighton Gr. v Hampton Rovers Fitzroy v Caulfield Grammarians Mazenod OC v St Bedes / Mentone Tigers Parkdale Vultures v AJAX St Kevins OB v Old Melburnians

kicking three goals. Pat Tyquin and Tim Doherty (three goals) were again among the Tigers best. Making light of their injury list, Old Brighton Grammarians dined out on a similarly undermanned Caulfield Grammarians and claimed a mammoth eighteen-goal victory in their Round 11 clash at Glenhuntly. After piling on eight goals in a highly impressive second quarter, the Tonners produced a withering ten goal assassination in the third term. It was a SKOB-esque performance, with fourteen players finding the score sheet. The first quarter was a competitive affair, with the home side grabbing the early lead after Michael Dewar kicked the first goal of the match. From that point however, the Fields simply couldn’t match the Tonners’ speed and efficient ball use. The defence won first use of the ball with timely interceptions and better judgement. Tim Fogarty again quietly locking down his opponent, while Dylan Verney and Riley Cummin stayed involved, linking up as though programmed to know each other’s every

move. The second quarter launched the onslaught from the moment Stewy Hooy brilliantly burst from a pack to thump through the first goal. Although held early, Charlie King nailed a couple as did young Michael Slater, and Ben Jakobi cleverly snapped a goal that sent us to the sheds with a 49 point advantage. After halftime, three times Ollie Cavallaro charged forward, marked strongly and drove the ball through, his opponents unable to cope with his brute strength. Nick Coroneous dobbed his third from a tight angle, and kicked four for the day in his first match in 2015. All of a sudden the Tonners had kicked ten straight goals before a minor score. A hapless home side returned from their oranges to face the music again and finally the Tonners missed a few, but still ran away with a 108-point victory heading into the doublebye. Caulfield were missing in-form contributors Dominic O’Keefe and James Shanahan, and were well served by William Barker (three goals), Tim Nixon and Hugo Gates.

TOP WIN EARNS EAGLES TOP SPOT Marcellin’s monstrous 109 point win over Old Camberwell pushed them straight to the top of the table replacing Old Ivanhoe in the prime position. The Hoes dropped two places with a loss to Monash Blues at home. While all three sit 9-2 in the win-loss column, Ivanhoe are losing ground on percentage. Elsewhere, Peninsula’s 10 goal second quarter boosted the Pirates to a victory over Williamstown CYMS; Old Haileyburians edged past PEGS who stuck fat until being run over in the final term; and Oakleigh came back to defeat Therry Penola after a lapse in the first quarter. Marcellin didn’t give Old Camberwell any breathing room from the get go as the Eagles slotted eight goals past the 9th placed Wellers in the first quarter. And after a lacklustre second term Marcellin put its foot down once again to skip the halftime margin to 56. The Wellers were truly outmatched as they managed just one goal in the first half and only secured four for the game. The Eagles added another eight majors in the third and topped off the big victory with three in the last to extend the final margin over 100 points. Jeremiah Antypas led the force with eight goals in a best on performance. Old Ivanhoe had the chance to lock in top spot while stifling another’s hopes, but Monash were not to be outgunned. And by halftime the Hoes were well aware as it faced a 35 point deficit against the Blues. Ivanhoe made a play in the third term reeling the margin to 25, but Monash’s domination across all facets was too much to handle. Monash slipped four more goals past Ivanhoe in the fourth quarter to earn a 45 point victory. Best on ground Nicholas Petering kicked his second bag of five in as many weeks in the win. Peninsula slept in a little too long on the weekend, which almost ended their finals chances. Williamstown CYMS made Peninsula pay in the first quarter with four majors and keeping the 6
opposition goalless. Unfortunately for the CY’s, Peninsula emerged and belted Williamstown in the second term kicking 10 goals to reverse the margin. The dragon that was Peninsula’s ballistic second term went back to sleep as the Pirates continued on in normal fashion with seven goals in the second half to end 44 point victors. Stefan Barbour was B.O.G again for Peninsula with a seven-goal haul. PEGS were up for the fight when the Bombers travelled to Old Haileybury last weekend. PEGS, still on the hunt for its first victory of the season, took it to the Bloods in the first three quarters. The two went toe to toe up until three quarter time, as the margin never exceeded two points at each break. The fourth placed Bloods lifted in the last quarter with seven goals to take the points at home. PEGS showed promise and can take only positives into the rest of the season having matched it with a finals contender. Despite the honourable effort, they remain winless and in increasingly dangerous territory. Captain Peter Gleadhill was best on for Old Haileyburians and capped off his efforts with two goals. Therry Penola came out blazing in Corey Bannister’s 250th game against Oakleigh with five goals to one in the first quarter. However, highlights for the Lions ended here with a 50-point turn around in the second quarter at the hands of the Krushers. Nine goals to one for the term gave Oakleigh the advantage, and the home team carried on to victory from here out. With another 10 goals in the second half Oakleigh extended the final margin to 49. Aaron Cloke topped the goal kicking with six for the PREMIER C — TIPS IN BOLD Williamstown CYMS v Therry Penola Monash Blues v Old Camberwell Marcellin v Oakleigh Peninsula v PEGS Old Haileyburians v Old Ivanhoe Gr.

Krushers while Shane Borland was named best on ground. This week, Williamstown CYMS and Therry Penola clash, Therry walked away with the points in the Division 1 Grand Final rematch earlier this season and tipping the Lions to do so again. Monash Blues host Old Camberwell, the Blues will be hoping for an extensive victory to get the percentage boost to reach top spot. Marcellin plays Oakleigh at home and I’m predicting Marcellin to hold onto first place with a win. Peninsula faces PEGS, and the Pirates should secure the points. Old Ivanhoe travels to Princes Park to take on Old Haileyburians. I am predicting Old Ivanhoe to squeeze past the Bloods.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME
VALE PHIL WALSH
The entire football community has been in mourning since the tragic death of Adelaide Senior Coach Phil Walsh, which occurred two weeks ago on the morning of July the 3rd. The details of his death are sketchy and desperately unfortunate, however it has been the overwhelming response by the football community that has once again illuminated just how much the game, and the figures who love and respect the game, means to us. Phil Walsh was a pioneer tactician, a respected player, celebrated assistant coach and had thoroughly earned his tenure as senior coach of the Adelaide Crows. The VAFA community mourns along with the rest of the Australian Rules football community in one of the game’s darkest hours. There were a number of fine tributes in Phil’s honour throughout the leagues of Australia, including during the matches played between Masala and Canterbury and Richmond Central and St Johns. Our thoughts and prayers are with Phil’s family and friends during such a bewildering and tragic time.

COLD AND MISERABLE FOOTY IN BENDIGO FOR BIG V
On one of those bone-chilling July afternoons in downtown Bendigo, three VAFA teams represented our league against Vic Country. Whilst we did not take home the chocolates in any of the three games, it was not through a lack of effort and pride in the Big V Guernsey. With half the preparation as the Vic Country squads and midseason injuries playing their role, the three sides simply couldn’t match it with the impressive Vic Country squads. In the Under 19s game, Vic Country coped with the brutal conditions better than our youngsters who could only manage one goal in their 49-point loss, such was the effect of the howling wind and walloping rain. Captain Michael Caven and Kew’s Kyle Margaritas were amongst the best. For the Premier B-Div 4 squad, a brave effort by the Big V kept them in it for much of the match until Vic Country 2 kicked away for a 29-point win. Dan Garside (St Bedes/Mentone) was named best afield for the VAFA. In the senior game, a startling first half effort of 4 goals for Gabe Hamilton kept the VAFA’s hopes alive, however Vic Country was just too good across the board on the day. Harry Tinney (Old Trinity, pictured above), Jack Bull (Old Scotch) and Hamilton (Old Trinity) all played courageously in menacing conditions. Congratulations to all selected and a huge thank you to the coaches, support staff and interested parties who braved the conditions! THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015
UNDER-23S DO THEMSELVES PROUD IN AAFC CARNIVAL
A terrific squad of the VAFA’s finest Under 23 year old players flew into Tasmania for the 2015 AAFC Carnival (2nd July to 4th July) to take on Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia. The side, led by Simon Caven (St Bernards) and Gabe Hamilton (Old Trinity), opened their campaign with a 25-point win over Tasmania in a shortened Round Robin game. Their next two clashes against Western Australia and South Australia respectively ended in narrow losses that left Victoria reeling in the minor final against Tassie. Played on the bigger Blundstone Arena, Victoria smashed the home side by 101 points.
ALL AUSTRALIAN HONOURS FOR WINDLOW AND FAB FIVE During the Under 23s AAFC Carnival there were some magnificent performances by individuals, none more noteworthy than the brilliant job done by VAFA umpire Tom Windlow. Tom (pictured below), umpired with poise and nuance and was able to build strong rapport with his fellow umpires and the players. As such, Tom was able to snare the much sought after position as the All-Australian umpire of the carnival. Additionally, there were 5 VAFA players selected in the squad. The players were VAFA captain Simon Caven, Vice-Captain Gabe Hamilton, Kelvin Williams, Tom Quinn and Josh Cowan. A magnificent effort from six quality young men.
One of the freakish incidents of the carnival was Ruckman/forward Dustan Mills (Old Mentonians) going down pre-game in a collision with the water boy that left him with numerous stitches and a painful stint on the sidelines. His loss left Victoria undersized in their crucial contest against South Australia, which the Big V lost by 8 points. Although the Big V could not knock off our fiercest rivals, it was a venerable effort from a group of very talented young men. Once again, we greatly appreciate the support from all coaches, support staff, parents and partners. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

LOVE THE GAME FORFOR THETHE LOVE OFOF THE GAME
UNDEFEATED: GOOD THING OR BAD THING? One of the most overused clichés in our great game is the notion that every team needs to lose a game in a season or risk falling down when it matters most. It’s not a baseless theory considering how long and arduous a year of footy really is. To not lose a game in the regular season is akin to the risk of flirting with complacency, nerves and the notion that nothing is perfect. With conflict and loss comes a desire and determination to right those wrongs. How wonderfully poetic football can be. There are still 13 sides that remain undefeated in 2015. They are listed below: SKOB (Prem B and B Reserve) Old Xaverians (Premier B Thirds and Club XVIII 1) Marcellin (Premier C Reserve) Kew (Div 1) Ivanhoe (Div 2 Reserve) Emmaus St Leos (Div 3) West Brunswick (Div 3 Reserve) Canterbury (Div 4) Old Westbourne Grammarians (Div 4 Reserve) Peninsula (Under 19 Section 4) St Francis Xavier (Club XVIII 2)
more. Canterbury arrived from the EFL and has developed a stronghold in the bottom division. Emmaus St Leos (below) has shrugged off the grand disappointment of surprisingly missing promotion last season to storm into the hottest of hot favouritism, and finally SKOB (St Kevins Old Boys), the club that has had a host of near misses looks likely to return to the top section for the first time since 2005. However, in celebrating these magnificent starts to the respective seasons of these teams, we also acknowledge that things can very quickly go awry come September… Just ask Therry Penola who went 18-0 in 2014, only to be beaten twice in the finals series by eventual premiers Williamstown CYMS.
Of the 13, 4 of the sides are senior teams and they all brandish very interesting backgrounds. Kew has come off back-to-back premierships on their way to Division 1 and appears hungry for
NOW A LEGEND Bill Deller, President of Williamstown CYMS, was elevated to Legend Status of the AFL Umpires Hall of Fame on Monday 29 June. His exemplary service for the association has led to Bill’s ascension to legendary status. His tireless work, his professionalism and his genuine love for the game have led to better conditions and a more professional organisation for the umpires who have followed Bill’s lead. Bill was originally inducted into the AFL Umpires Hall of Fame in its inaugural induction in 1996. He has led a long and illustrious career in the game, starting with umpiring in 251 VFL/AFL games, including five Grand Finals. Since those heady days, Bill was the VFL/AFL Director of Umpiring from 1982-1997 and CEO of the AFL Umpires Association from 2004-11. Most relevantly to our great competition, Bill has held an official post at Williamstown CYMS for almost ten years and shows no sign of slowing down! We congratulate Bill Deller on a magnificent achievement and a wonderful career. 12

Congratulations to Old Xaverian ANDREW NOLEN – ‘Roo’ joined the club in 2000 and has been involved in 6 Crocs Premiership teams (5 as a player and 1 as coach). With any luck this year could be lucky number 7. Roo’s countless hours on and off the park have been a major factor in the success of the Crocs over the last decade. His tireless will to win and ferocious attack at the ball are trademarks that have earned him enormous respect from his teammates. Congratulations Roo on achieving this fantastic milestone and all the best for rest of the season.
200
Congratulations to Old Xaverian STUART SKIDMORE – ‘Thick’ joined the club in 1998 after a successful schoolboy career, representing the U19’s in back to back Premierships in 1998/99. Stuart was vice captain in 1999, winning the B&F. One of the toughest players to pull on a red and black jumper, he made his Senior debut in 1999. He played in the 2001 Reserves Premiership and captained Premierships in 2006/07, winning the B&F in 2006. After finishing his Senior football career, Stuart is now an integral part in helping the Crocodiles go for 4 flags in a row.
150
Congratulations to De La Salle’s DANIEL CLOSE – Dan started with the U19s in 2005 and made his Senior debut that same season. After a swag of awards at Reserves level, including a Best & Fairest and two Premierships, Dan is now one of the first selected in the Seniors and is playing some of the best football of his career. A tough inside mid fielder, he demonstrated his talent and value to the club when he finished runner up in the 2014 Senior Best & Fairest.
150
Congratulations to Canterbury’s SHAUN KELLY – Straughnie started playing with Canterbury in 2006. His commitment to training and playing football is unmatched and his attendance at social functions is just as committed. The Reserves Best and Fairest winner in 2012, his on-field efforts are second to none and he leads by example.
100
Congratulations to MHSOB’s RON SHELL – A hugely popular member of the playing group, congratulations to Ron on reaching his 100 game milestone. Prone to the odd meltdown, Ron is a great clubman that makes a strong contribution to the community off-field. On-field Ron is all business, combining disciplined play with a terrific work rate. A dashing rebounding defender come wingman, Ron has developed into a pure footballer.
100
Congratulations to North Brunswick’s BRAD DANCER – A former Reserves Captain, Brad’s bullocking style of football, whether in defense or attack, is legendary. A committed clubman, he is well respected and admired by his peers. The fact that he loves a goal means that he prefers to spend his time up forward, but never questions his coaches on where to play. In the midfield his ability to feed the ball out to the runners is great.
50
Congratulations to SKOB’s BILLY KANAKIS – Billy commenced at SKOB in 2013 from SKC where he was a member of the 1st XVIII Premiership. Playing 13 Senior games in his first year, Billy was selected in the Big V U19 side. The silky skilled on-baller has become a valued part of SKOB’s Seniors in the midfield and across half-forward.

Congratulations to North Brunswick’s GREG McMONIGLE – Well done to ‘Craig’ for reaching 50 games for the Bulls. A no-nonsense, hard at it defender, Greg always makes the ball his objective. A popular clubman, he is well respected and great company.
Congratulations to St. Marys Salesian’s MICHAEL HOWARD – Commencing as an under-age player, ‘Rowdy’ was a member of the Saints 2013 U19 Premiership team. Able to play successfully on ball, back or forward, Michael is a terrific team player and has impressed with his determination and football skills.
Congratulations to Oakleigh’s CHRIS PEARSON – Chris played his 50th game against De La Salle. Recruited from Mt Waverley Blues JFC, Chris played his first game against Ajax Thirds in Round 1 2013 and has continued to play in the U19’s.
Congratulations to MHSOB’s KIEL PUMPA – Since joining the High School in 2012, Kiel has gone on to win the Reserves Coaches Award in 2013, the Reserves Best and Fairest in 2014, and in 2015 has gone on to Captain the Reserves. His development is testament to his diligent preparation and incredible work rate. Congratulations Kiel. Congratulations to MHSOB’s JACKSON WOOD – A player blessed with natural talent, Jackson has had to overcome a number of injury hurdles to achieve his 50 game milestone. DIVISION 1
William Balme
CRYSTAL BLUE PERSUASION Coming out of the bye and into the final third of the season, it is the appropriate time to get out my handy-dandy notebook out and hypothesise the eventual state of the wonderfully challenging landscape of Division 1 in 2015. With 12 rounds in the book, I must say that my initial prediction, which fortunately for my dignity and standing in the community (not that it is particularly high anyhow), was not posted publically. I envisaged NOB/St Pats to be in the top 2 with Ormond, with a mixed bag of the new kids on the block (Kew and St Mary’s Salesian) and the old firm of Prahran Assumption and Old Geelong to be pushing top 4. As we have seen, Prahran Assumption will likely look upon 2015 as the year that could have been. Kew sit on top at 12-0 and St Mary’s Salesian is the hot and cold side that will likely fill that awkward 4th spot. NOB/St Pats is a side that has simply not produced against the best and with their percentage the 2nd worst in the comp; it is unlikely that they will bother the scorers in September, despite sitting 5th. Old Geelong has had a wonderful season and seems to be hitting their straps at the right time. I maintain that Kew and Ormond are the teams to beat and will come 1 and 2, but I would not be surprised come preliminary final time if Old Geelong pulls one out of the hat to become a Premier C team. Last weekend, Bulleen Templestowe and Whitefriars played off in a virtual final to remain in the Division. I expected BT to win but the young squad comprehensively smashed them. I reluctantly am condemning the Bullants, alongside Yarra Valley, to Division 2. My tip for the LS Pepper Medal? Colby O’Brien from OGs, followed by Sidney Jones (SMS) and Kyle Margaritas (Kew). Andrew Brazzale (Kew) to win the goal kicking. Round 12 wasn’t a particularly satisfying round of footy. It was cold, miserable and the results reflected a round of pretty uneven contests. The only game that lived up to the bill was Prahran Assumption and Old Mentonians at Toorak Park, a reissue of the earlier season clash where OMs came out by 1 point. This time, Prahran Assumption said goodbye to the relegation zone and jumped into 16

6th spot with a 16-point win. Paul Donahoo was at his bullish best for the home side, enforcing himself on the contest and allowing Timmy Maya to snag a couple in his 101st game for the club. The hyphenator, Smith-Cameron was at his blistering best off halfback and Edgeworth kicked 3 in Dustan Mills’ absence on tour with the VAFA, but it wasn’t enough to halt the improving Two Blues. Kew maintained their winning streak with relative ease, despite another strong start from NOB/St Pats who led at quarter time. From that point on, in wet conditions at Alec Gillon Oval, Kew kicked 15 goals to 3 to win by 77 points. After a slow start in the middle, the Bears found winners in ressies captain Will Delbridge, the rugged Ethan Roberts and an effusive display from utility Max Waters. They were too strong up forward for NOBSPC, with the usual suspects chiming in for 7 between them. I’m talking VAFA reps Brazzale and Maibaum of course. For NOBSPC, Chris Ford was dangerous up forward and Gerrard Bence was strong down back, but the Kew juggernaut was too much to handle. It was a bizarrely similar story at Doncaster Reserve, as Yarra Valley started strongly only for the class of Old Geelong to engulf them from that point on. The second most dominant forward combination in the comp (on goal tallies) in Wood and McMeel joined up for 6 goals, setting up a most enticing battle between the two duos in the Como Park derby. Colby O’Brien firmed as the LS Pepper Medal favourite with another bullocking performance as the OGs midfield unit dominated contested ball. Simon Donald kicked 5 of Yarra Valley’s 9 with Pask and Pollard again the dominant mids for the winless Bushrangers. In an anticlimactic Clive, Ormond monstered the undermanned St Mary’s Salesian at E.E. Gunn to come away with a steady 50-point win. Martinov was superb with 4 goals, supported by Chisholm and Tahana with 2 each. Blair Atkins continued his sparkling form in the middle, simply smashing the St Mary’s side missing Jones, Strangward and Tanner amongst others. Ben Andrews thrived with his greater role in their absences, but their forward line inefficiency cost them any chance of staying with the Monders. Minus their aberration against Kew, Ormond remain in the eyes of many punters to be the side instilling the most fear in the rest of the competition.
and potent in attack. Andrew Daou kicked 6 and was surrounded by a host of quality mids in Sean Currie and Jason Spencer who were part of the unit that simply dominated first ball use. Bulleen relied on Cherbakof and Considine for their goals but they couldn’t inspire a higher work rate from the rest of the side. It was a particularly disappointing afternoon for a side that generally thrives in the wet. Their prospects for survival have become that much more difficult with this result.
In the most interesting result of the round, Whitefriars may have just secured their place in Division 1 next year with an inspired smashing of Bulleen Templestowe by 88 points at Whitefriars College. BT only had two goal kickers all afternoon, and couldn’t manage more than one a quarter. Whitefriars on the other hand appeared confident
Although Clive likes an underdog battle, it is impossible for the big fella to avoid the pull of the Como, a couple of (post-game) tins, and a clash between 1 and 3 between Kew and Old Geelong. It is Brazzale and Maibaum taking on Wood and McMeel. How scrumptious. US band Haim calls ‘down to the wire’ and so does Clive.

EDWARDS SOARS AS ST JOHNS TAME SNAKES St John’s banked back-to-back wins as it held off a determined Richmond Central side and ground out a 26-point win at Thomas Carroll Reserve. After consecutive losses to ladder-leader Ivanhoe and finals aspirant Northern Blues, the JOCs needed to climb out of their rut, and did so, albeit in ugly fashion. The Snakes’ faint finals hopes hinged on victory last Saturday, but unfortunately too much was left to too few, as they couldn’t combat St Johns’ much vaunted on-ball brigade. Inaccuracy plagued the JOCs in the first term as their forwards simply couldn’t capitalise on the good work done up the field. Both sides slotted four goals in the second quarter but it was the Snakes who had all the running. St Johns struggled to by-pass Richmond’s loose back, which gave the Snakes plenty of drive, with the majority of their goals launched from defensive 50. In the third, the JOCs again couldn’t make the most of their opportunities and consequently kept the Snakes within striking distance heading in into the final term. The last quarter was a scrappy affair, with both sides searching for a spark, for the JOCs it came in the form of key-forward Tim Edwards. The classy forward soared in what was arguably the mark-of-the-year and converted to seal a gutsy win. Coming off the bye, St Johns head to Garvey Oval to take on an in-form Old Paradians whilst the Snakes host the Northern Blues in what is a must win. Old Paradians put in their best performance of the year and in doing so may have sealed consecutive finals appearances with a commanding 37-point win over Eltham. It was a classic eight-point game, which now sees the third-placed Raiders two games clear of the fourth-placed Turtles. After back-to-back losses, Eltham’s top-four spot hangs in the balance with Northern Blues nipping at their heels. Parade’s form on the road has left a lot to be desired but that may have turned it around after putting Eltham to the sword. The Raiders held the Turtles at bay in the first-half and then 18
tore the game apart with a seven-goals-to-two third term. The Turtles offered stern resistance in the final term, but it was simply too little too late. Parade was led superbly in attack by Boundy and Kandilakis who combined for seven goals and will prove a handful for St Johns this week. If the Raiders can overcome the in-form JOCs, then it would all but seal their top-four spot. Eltham needs to get its season back on track as it faces a plucky Monash side desperate to avoid relegation. Northern Blues kept its stellar home record intact as it thumped Elsternwick to the tune of 79-ponts. Fans were treated to a shootout at W.R Ruthven Reserve with both teams combining for 40 goals but it was the Blues spread of goal-kickers that proved the difference. Blues forwards Marcon and McRedmond bagged five goals apiece and were well supported by Holmes (4) and Higham and Passey with three each. The Wicks were riding on the high of their win over Eltham a week prior and despite the final margin, they were far from disgraced. After an inaccurate first term, Northern held a handy three-goal lead, but pushed that out to 43-points by halftime. Both sides traded blows in the third term, with six goals apiece as defence was not high on the priority list. Northern stormed home in the last with 7.10 as the Wicks ran out of gas. This week, the Blues face Richmond Central with a percentage boost needed to jump into the top-four. Elsternwick has a chance to exit the relegation zone as it takes the luckless South Melbourne. win over Monash. Gryphons’ forward ErwinRoss stole the show however with an eightgoal haul but unfortunately it was to no greater purpose. “Panda” Hawking bagged four for the Unicorns and was well supported by Toman and Svirskis with three apiece. With a mere five goals separating the sides at quarter-time, Melbourne High held the Gryphons goalless in the second and took a three-goal-lead into halftime. Much like the opening term, the third was an arm wrestle, with both sides bagging five goals apiece. The Unicorns did what they needed to in the last to secure a much-needed win. They face a sterner test this week however as they welcome ladder-leaders Ivanhoe to Melbourne High, in what looms as season defining. Monash however is a legitimate chance to take its biggest scalp of the year as it faces hot and cold Eltham at East Caulfield Reserve.

The game at Lindsay Hassett Oval went according to script as first-placed Ivanhoe thumped lastplaced South Melbourne to the tune of 60-points. The first three quarters were a slugfest with the Hoes putting the Districts to the sword with a scintillating seven goal final term. Kaldawi and Lovell were electric up forward for Ivanhoe combining for nine majors. South Melbourne will be heartened by something of a three quarter performance against the in-form team of Div 2 and will fancy their chances against Elsternwick. Ivanhoe will go in warm favourites but should not underestimate the plucky Melbourne High.

CEMENT SETTING ON TOP 6 On perhaps the coldest day for the year, the Reserves copped the rain and the main games were very slippery. The top six are a game clear, as are the bottom two. The Sharks fell short again. Swinburne is struggling and the Saints bubble got burst. Emmaus St. Leo’s are looking at South Melbourne Districts spot. To the games:
on ground and “Ranchy” worked hard running both ways. Devan Healey was impressive for the Hawks again and is moving into good form. Goal kickers were spread out with 2 each to Richard Ogge, “Incey”, “Groma” and “Pritch”. Mick Manning was outstanding for Swinny booting 4, as was Ashley Woodhead.
AQUINAS DEF. GLEN EIRA Slippery conditions made at Aquinas College made the Bloods/Saints match arm wrestle. By 12 minutes in, only one point had been scored before Glen Eira struck. It took another 12 minutes before the Bloods were able to strike back and hold a slim lead at the first change. It was a struggle again in the second quarter but Aquinas maintained the lead. Come the “premiership” quarter, the Bloods 5-0 dominance jumped the lead to 40 and that’s where it stayed. Callum Buchanan had his best game for the year for the Saints. Stephen Tibb was BOG, booting 2 goals.
POWER HOUSE DEF. LA TROBE UNI La Trobe Uni travelled to Powerhouse in the hopes of claiming consecutive wins for the first time this season and move a game clear from the bottom. Unfortunately, in wet and muddy conditions Powerhouse kicked 4 goals to 0 in the second quarter, which proved too large of a deficit for Latrobe to chase down in the conditions. Power House was able to build each quarter. Powerhouse ran out 43-point winners. Josh Gibson was best for the students. Luke Stubbs equalled his season-high with 5 goals and Adam Collett was BOG.
ALBERT PARK DEF. BY EMMAUS ST. LEO’S A scrappy, slippery game up at Albert Park saw the Animals form a lead by as many as 21 in the first quarter. The Falcons hit back in the second with the wind to narrow it down to a 3 point lead to the Animals. The Animals coach Al Sutherland gave the team a big rev up which resulted in an 8 goals to 1 quarter with Ryan Harding kicking 4 of his 6 for the day in the period. The Animals led by the Baranello brothers continued in the last quarter to take out a 74-point victory. Ryan Want and Jack Amies were best for the Falcons HAWTHORN DEF. SWINBURNE UNI At Rathmines Rd, both teams were struggling there too. Despite kicking with the wind in the first, the Hawks squandered their chances to put the game away early by kicking 1-8. Swinburne then did the same in the 2nd kicking 0-6. By the 4th, the Razorbacks were without a bench and some injuries to key players but still managed to win the quarter, despite being 22 points in arrears and losing the crucial fixture. For Hawthorn, Dave Pritchard was clearly best 20
ELEY PARK DEF. BY UHS-VU After jumping out of the blocks, the Sharks were looking like doing some damage with David Viola (4 goals) and Declan Mitchell taking some big marks in the forward line. It seemed as though whoever’s midfield could get the ball forward more, would win the day as both sides had dominant forwards. The Sharks went into the half with a 16-point buffer. The third quarter was a struggle with both sides scoring 3-1. Nonetheless, the Vultures went on a rampage, outscoring the Sharks 46-13 and running away with the match. Josh “Big Hands” Beasley was the Sharks best. Vultures, Ben Collins enjoyed his 1st senior game for the year with 3 goals and Lachlan Allen had his best game for the year as he took home the BOG honours.

PREVIEW With a week off for the rep game, round 13 needs to be lucky for some. What we will expect to see is the bottom 4 sides to be 2 games behind the top 7 and Swinburne overtake the Saints for 6th. Some one-sided affairs this week: Aquinas (3rd) host Eley Park (11th). The Sharks are getting players back and a week off will help to make this a close one but it will be Aquinas at home. Strangely enough, the Bloods/Sharks could be the match of the round however I’ll give that honour to Uhs-Vu (4th) hosting Albert Park (8th). The Vultures at home.
DIVISION 3
Lastly, Power House (9th) host Hawthorn (5th). A win for the Hawks will see them 2 games clear of 6th. Swinburne (7th) has the bye and should move up a spot before they have a massive game travelling to Albert Park.

HE, WHO LAUGHS LAST, DRINKS LOUDEST. At the start of any given season, clubs have a blank canvas to work with. An opportunity to create their masterpiece beckons. For some clubs, their masterpiece will be merely to compete with the rest of the competition while for others; only the ultimate success will quench their thirst. It only feels like yesterday when teams were training in the brutal summer heat, players opting for the comfort of a pair of Nike Frees rather than their customary puma kings, and for a select confident few, training with the rig out. And with the winter solstice now in the rear view mirror, we find ourselves with only six games remaining to play. For a handful of clubs, their season is over, the last six games of the season provide the platform to improve, and attempt to lay foundations for another crack in nine months’ time. But for those on the top rungs, the hardest work is yet to begin. Performances earlier in the season count for little come finals time. The slate is clean, and for those that stumble at the pointy end of the season, a summer of regret looms. The adage goes “man makes plans and god laughs” and whether you’re a man of the church or not, in dusty selection rooms across the country, they’ll be countless coaches shaking their heads, wondering where it all went wrong. After a relatively successful 2014, equipped with some talented recruits and a more than capable coaching panel, Manningham were destined for greatness. Or so they planned. A culmination of injuries and ill-timed South East Asia holidays have crippled our Bulleen dwelling brethren, and their season continues to go from bad to worse. And while recent form would suggest they were never expected to topple the high flying Westbourne Grammarians, at the season’s start you would have thought this would be a cakewalk for the Cobras. Westbourne led from start to finish in a scrappy affair, and ran out victors by 39 points. Dale Collins was again solid with four goals, although was held better than in recent weeks and Mitchell Ferrie was back to his best. For Manningham it was Daniel Mott and Tommy Bell who fought hard all day. 22

The Canterbury faithful headed to unchartered waters again this week. This time the Range Rovers headed due east to Noble Park to tackle Masala. And as expected, the juggernaut that is Canterbury made humiliatingly light work of Noble Park, coughing up an early solitary goal for the entire match. Keen to get some run in the legs of a few rookies, Coach Mick Harper took a markedly different side into the game from the week before. The spherical Charlie Acutt impressed on debut, and Andrew Winn put in his best performance for the year. Masala, who found it incredibly tough going were buoyed by performances from David Crkvenac and Matty Decarne. Box Hill North, the crowd favourite of Division Four continue to impress coming into the pointy end season, and reports from Elgar Road suggest the possibility of a long finals campaign are very much a reality. On recent form, a close game had been predicted, a prediction that came to fruition, for at least the first half with the sides heading to the sheds with a mere kick between them. But after the long break, it was a different story, with Box Hill jumping out of the box early, and showing off the talent that has earned them their underdog status. Dylan Liistro had his considerable cheer squad in a frenzy, racking up touches at will as the mountainous Drew Howlett kicked four sausage rolls. While the conditions at Jordan Reserve weren’t great, you couldn’t help but notice Point Cook’s modest victory over Chadstone. While it’s obscene to call a 100 point win modest, in this instance, it’s unfortunately applicable. Point Cook, until recently have been billeted as the only faint hope against the Canterbury juggernaut, and Chadstone, well, to put it lightly they’ve been struggling a bit. Mason Kip, as always was sensational for Point Cook and Ricky Munn and Daniel Sidwell had a DIVISION 4 — TIPS IN BOLD North Brunswick v Manningham Canterbury v Box Hill North South Mornington v Chadstone Parkside v Point Cook Westbourne Grammarians v Mt. the chocolates over Westbourne, with the task of keeping Dale Collins at bay the key here.
Five weeks ago, before Mount Lilydale acquired every free agent in the outer East, the game against South Mornington would have been pretty interesting. Alas, Mount Lilydale, equipped with their new arsenal made incredibly light work of the Tigers, running out winners by 175 points. Liam Bull kicked a ‘Michelle’ in a best afield performance and Brandan Spencer helped himself to six majors. This week, I’m picking North Brunswick to whack the hapless Manningham Cobras while Canterbury should do the same to the wellsupported Box Hill North. South Mornington should sault passed Chadstone while Point Cook will make light work of Parkside. In the game of the round, I’m predicting Mount Lilydale to get

CLUB WAREHOUSE RISING STAR 2015 TOM QUINN – UNIVERSITY BLUES We congratulate University Blues forward/midfielder Tom Quinn who has been nominated as the VAFA Rising Star for this round. Tom Quinn came to University Blues during the pre-season of 2015, coinciding with his move to Richmond VFL where he put in a big pre-season. He has made in immediate impact during his time at the club with his willingness to learn and his ability to play a variety of roles. His strong attack on the ball, repeat efforts and decision making also makes him a more than handy player up forward for Blues. Tommy plays predominantly as a small forward rotating through the midfield in a similar vein to Jamie Elliott from Collingwood, and like Elliott, he is clean with his hands and his strong overhead marking belies his apparent lack of height. He has been in a rich vein of form kicking 6 goals back in round 8 against Beaumaris and gaining selection in the VAFA Under 23 team for the AAFC Carnival where he finished with a bag of 5 in the minor final and backing up in the Senior VAFA Team on the weekend. Whilst only in his first year with the club, he will get better as he gets stronger and will spend more time in the midfield as he developed strength and condition.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015
* to be eligible for the club Warehouse Rising Star, a player must be born no earlier than 1994 and playing his first full season of senior football.

5 YEARS AGO – 2010
Glen Eira won a very important game in D2 Section against Old Westbourne, both clubs vying for a top four position. It was a low scoring affair and Glen Eira wasted some opportunities in the first quarter with 3.7 to 0.2. They continued to kick inaccurately but were never seriously challenged by the Westbournians and won 6.14 to 5.8. Best – Tsirogiannis, Massis, Higgins, Kohout, Spink, King (GEira) and Walker, Hudson, Benn, Pavez, Connors, Hudson (OWestb). Glen Eira remained in third position with plenty of work to be done by Old Westbourne, now 6th. La Trobe Uni and St Johns seemed certainties for the D3 finals with 11 wins apiece but below them, any two of seven clubs could fill the third and fourth spots. Albert Park strengthened their third position with a very impressive win over West Brunswick 16.16 to 3.6. The goals were well shared for Albert Park and their defence was simply miserly. Best – Lanigan, Maunder (3), Payne (3), Murnane (3), Hayes, Cain (APark) and Touzel, MacGugan, Hayes, Brown, Martin, Germon (WB). In D4 Section, Swinburne surprised Eley Park with their endeavour and provided an upset, winning 15.13 to 12.15. The Uni boys may have opened a possibility for finals’ time and the Sharks’ loss was not what they wanted at this stage of the season. Best – Manning, Wild, Elliman, Higgins, Wood, Hyman (Swinburne) and Viola (3), Marsiglio, Sahlstrom, Davis, Robinson, Bugeja (Eley Park). Division 3 senior coaches were Nathan Dallas (Albert Park), David Smith (Elsternwick), Mark Murray (Hawthorn), Leigh Cole (Ivanhoe), George Lattouf (Kew), Dean Sheldrick (La Trobe Uni), Martin Pike (Powerhouse), Joe Lenders (St Francis Xavier), Matt Jones (St John OC), Shannon Monagle (West Brunswick), R Watts (UHS-VU) and Andrew Stone (Yarra Valley OB). The leading ‘sharpshooter’ in the VAFA was Paul Tsoucalas for Oakleigh in the Under 19 South 2 Section. His 10 majors in this round took him into the 60’s and Paul was a real chance to kick the ‘ton’ if his form continued.
10 YEARS AGO – 2005
The combined Victorian Country Football League team were worthy winners of the Brian Molony Cup at Sportscover Arena, 13.13 to the VAFA’s 8.14. The VAFA trailed all day but at one stage looked 42
as though they may pull off a remarkable ‘comefrom-behind’ victory but the ‘boys from the bush’ determined not to let the game slip and drew away again to win comfortably. Andrew Lowcock (Uni Blues) was a constant headache for the VCFL early on at centre half forward and Justin Arnold (Old Xavs) and David Biggs (Old Essendon) were impressive in the heavy conditions. Down 23 points at half time, the ‘ammos’ had their work cut out. In the second half, Daniel Flaherty (Old Essendon), David Boundy (Old Paradians) and Murray Pitts (Beaumaris) all stood out for the VAFA. Others to hold their own were Travis Ruyg (Old Xavs) and Leigh Hendra (Old Brighton). St Bernards congratulated one of its most admired and respected competitors, Ben Loughlin, on his 150th game. Ben had played on many bigger opponents over the years and was a courageous utility player. Beginning in the U19’s in 1996, Ben’s highlight was the A Grade premiership in 2002 in which he played a significant role. Tim Beasley broke St Bedes Mentone Tigers club record for 1st 18 games when he ran out for the 244th time. Tim was the only player to have played senior football with St Bedes Old Collegians Football Club and St Bedes/Mentone Tigers AFC from E Section right through to B Section. Tim had been runner-up in the senior Best and Fairest in 1988 and 1990 before winning the senior Best and Fairest on no less than 7 occasions . He also won VAFA Best and Fairests in 1990 and 1991 as well as being a State representative player in 1992 and 1993. Tim was awarded life membership of his club in 2000 and was named a Club Legend in 2004.
20 YEARS AGO – 1995 In E East Section, the match of the round was between Old Carey (4th) and Bulleen United (5th) and a win to Old Carey would send them 2 games clear. Carey started well with four goals straight in the opening quarter while Bulleen had enough chances but kicked 2.4. At half time it was a 2 point lead to Bulleen United. Carey’s track form had been to date, two good quarters and a failure to consolidate in two and was driving their coach, John Wise to distraction. Well, it happened again as Bulleen took the lead at the final break, 9.7 to 7.6 with the C’s not impressive. Although Carey attacked often in the final term, the evergreen champion and multiple award winner, Bulleen’s Dick Morley, controlled the show with great marking and intelligent disposal as his team took the THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015
points and were now only 1 game behind Old Carey. Best – Portbury, Morley, Horsfield, Hickey, Perry, Thompson (Bulleen United) and Bryce, Campbell, Popplewell, Greenwood, Morrison, Vasilopoulos (Old Carey). In E Central Section, Uni High School Old Boys almost made certain of finals’ appearances with a big ‘comefrom-behind’ win over Old Westbourne who had led at three quarter time 6.12 to 5.8. It was a huge last quarter (9.4) by UHSOB as they posted a winning score of 14.12 to 7.16. Best – Burns (4), R Smith, D Smith, Strachan, McLean, Bone (UHSOB) and Dangerfield, Leonard, O’Malley, Billman, Stapleton, Evans (O West). Old Westbourne had to be careful now to avoid relegation in the coming rounds. St Mary’s were proud to announce that Terry (Froggy) Ymer reached 350 games for his club, the second Saints’ player to achieve this milestone. Terry had won many awards along the way culminating in life membership in 1989. Although diminutive in size and frame, Terry’s superior fitness and ability to remain injury free had given him the longevity. Everyone at St Marys hoped Froggy would go on to achieve the 400 game mark.
30 YEARS AGO – 1985 In E Section, it looked as though the eventual premiers may be between Preston and Heatherton, Preston being the strong favourites with only one loss to date, Heatherton having lost 3 games. Elsternwick (3rd) and Peninsula Old Boys (4th) may have had other ideas, both recording big wins in this round. Elsternwick had the biggest victory however with a score of 38.20 to Old Carey’s 6.7. The goals came from everywhere as the Wicks ran riot. Best – Farrington (3), Karipidus (6), Rosewarne (5), Thompson, Firth, Hill (E’Wick) and Endall, Mead, Jackson, Macauley, Benton, McMahon (OCarey). In F Section, Monash Whites were determined to remove themselves from the bottom two by defeating ANZ Bank 21.12 to 18.16 on a weekend of high scoring affairs. Best – Ralph (5), Farley (4), Gemmola, De Face, Brooker (MonashW) and Bryceson, Coffey (7), McKillop, Murray, Szeitz, Townsend (ANZ).
accurate kicking (12.3). North Brunswick congratulated Ian Duncan on his 100 games. Ian was a foundation member of North Brunswick and had given the club wonderful service on the field as well as coaching the U14, U15 and U17 teams with great success. On top in Junior Section 1, Coburg went away in the last quarter of an exciting game to defeat the fourth team, Ormond 17.18 to 13.7. Best were Mick Brown, C Green, N McAuliffe, M Findlay (6) for Coburg and Handley, Boyanton, Purcell for Ormond.
45 YEARS AGO – 1970
Bill McGrory played his 400th game for Glenhuntly. Bill went on to become a well regarded coach in the VAFA in later years while his son Denis, a highly regarded player for Glenhuntly, also became an U19 coach at De La Salle in later years. Old Scotch suffered their second successive defeat when they were well beaten by Geelong at Geelong who almost doubled the ‘Scotchies’ score. This left Uni Blacks and Geelong with one defeat apiece, 8 points ahead of Old Scotch and St Bernards were in the top four on percentage from St Bernards. The only undefeated team at this stage was Coburg in A Section, 8 points ahead of Ormond with MHSOB a further 8 point behind. Caulfield Grammarians, Monash Blues and De La Salle were the main challengers to the top teams. After 13 rounds, in A Section, Rod McFarlane (Coburg) was on top of the goal-kickers with 94. Other leading ‘sharpshooters’ were P Wayman 71 (Alphington) B Section, B Davis 63 (UHSOB) C Section.
55 YEARS AGO - 1960
In B Section, top side De La Salle (7.11) lowered their colours to Kew (10.9) enabling Kew to hang on to their fourth position. Best – Woods, Lumley, Snell (Kew) and Conway, Kelly, Dillon (DLS). Ormond, struggling to stay in A Section , kept up with Old Xaverians for much of the game before succumbing 11.4 to 12.11. Best were Sanders, G Keogh, Storey (Old Xavs) and Hatton, O’Connell, Burdekin (Ormond).
40 YEARS AGO – 1975 Monash Blues (5th) kept their final four hopes alive in A Section when they scored a 5 point victory over Uni Blacks who only remained in the game with their THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

TOP 4 WINS BIG IN WET CONDITIONS It was a typical winter’s day in Melbourne; wet, arctic like conditions greeted all on Saturday, but the footy must go on, and the results were big this weekend. St.Kevins took on Old Trinity at T.H.King and made up for their poor performance the previous week against the Old Xavs with an outstanding display of footy. They blew Trinity out of the water with 5 goals to 1 in the first term and were never troubled on their way to a 21 goal rout of the hapless Old Trinity side. Webb followed on his good form from last week with another BOG performance and was closely followed by Spence and Massey who were very good in the big win. For Trinity, Thuring played a good game as did Robertson, but it was a tough day for all against a definite flag contender. Lewis and Dicintio were the major goal kickers for the match kicking 5 and 4 respectively. Old Scotch would have known a tough day was on the cards at St.Bernards, but their slim hope looked improved with the wet weather. That wasn’t the case. A 5 goal to 1 first term set them up for their 171 point demolition of the struggling Scotch, who have played some decent footy all year without reward. They came up against a beast on Saturday and there was no stopping the Snowdogs. They kicked kicking 17 goals in the second half and kept Scotch goalless in the final stanza. Sibbald has had a big year and he kicked 5 while Martin got 4 of his own. Delzoppo was unstoppable for Bernards and Larkin had a big day as well. Holding and Daggian were the best of a bad bunch for Scotch, who will need to fight hard to avoid relegation this season, with OMs leap frogging them and Uni Blacks only below them on percentage. Beaumaris continue to fly under the radar this season, going about their business quietly, claiming wins and looming as the biggest threat to the top 3 teams. They sit 4th, 2pts off top spot but have a tough draw to end the year. With SKOB next week, Xavs the week after and Bernards to 44
finish the year, they will need to win at least two of those to really stamp their authority on this comp. They got the job done against Uni Blacks by 105pts on Saturday, with Gibbins (3) and Zagni (2) performing well up forward, while Gregory played a great game in the big win. Things aren’t looking good for newcomers Uni Blacks, but Chalkely and Mills are having outstanding seasons in what has otherwise been a tough year for one half of Melbourne Uni. De La Salle took on an in form Uni Blues at Waverly and got the job done. Blues were looming as a potential threat to the top 4 teams but faltered in the wet conditions with accuracy being their biggest enemy. The 68pt win was De La’s 6th of the year evening up the ledger at 6-6 and keeping them in the hunt for finals action. Vawser continued his stellar season putting forward another BOG performance and putting his name in lights for a potential League B&F nod. Curnow and Fry were among the best for Uni Blues who will need to bounce back next week to keep their slim finals hopes alive. The Old Xaverians went into the game against Old Melburnians worried about what the home side would bring to the park, having been in good form of late. OMs are a dangerous side and with Xavs undermanned, this presented a great opportunity. In the end the Xavs did it easy, winning by 99pts at Albert Park. Sam Cleeve was very good up forward kicking 8 goals with Wynne playing second fiddle with 4. Lucas and Ongarato were among the best. Watson kicked 3 of OMs 8 goals and Lapping and Monk showed some brilliance throughout the day. A tough showing from the Old Xavs who were ultimately far too good for O’Ms in very wet conditions. SECTION TWO Collegians broke through for their first victory of the season on Saturday against a disappointing Whitefriars outfit. The Lions were impressive from the outset, holding the Friars scoreless in the first stanza and securing a 34-point quarter time lead. They never surrendered their lead and the final margin of 69-points could have been far worse if it wasn’t for Collegians inaccuracy in front of goal, scoring 26 behinds for the match. Christian Middleton was best afield and was in everything, whilst Jim Bazzani scored three majors. Caulfield Grammarians continued their impressive run of form, knocking over a gritty Old Ivanhoe squad by 31-points at Chelsworth Park. Old Ivanhoe was in charge early, leading by two goals at quarter time. After the first break Caulfield arrested the momentum back their way scoring 12 of the next 17 goals on route to victory. Lachlan Topp and Harry Schaffer were again the most dangerous forwards for Caulfield kicking three each, whilst Nicholas Reeves-Smith booted four for the losers.
SECTION THREE Old Carey ran over the top of a determined Ormond side in the Match of the Round in Section Three on Saturday. The Monders were on top for most of the day, and the contest was fierce from the outset. A six goal to two third quarter had Ormond’s tails up, as they headed into the final change 8-points ahead. The Panthers stepped up the intensity in the last stanza and the ball barely left their half, eventually running out 23-point winners in a memorable encounter. Old Geelong gave old Xaverians a good old fashioned hiding at Como Park. The percentage boosting 151-point victory was no surprise to anybody as Old Geelong have been the best side in the section all season, with performances such as this one almost expected on a weekly basis. David Ennels kicked six and was unstoppable up forward, and Harry Morrison was also prominent in the win. Elsewhere, Williamstown downed St Bernards by 109-points, and Hampton Rovers defeated Old Camberwell by 92-points.
Other results saw Parkdale dismantle Mazenod by 65-points, Marcellin outlasted St Bedes/ Mentone by 19-points, and Old Brighton flexed their muscle against Fitzroy running out 41-point winners.

UMPIRES CORNER
@VAFAUA
Last week saw everyone get a weekend off to reconnect with our loved ones and I’m pretty sure that after having us around the house all weekend, they’re going to be happy that footy’s back this week! It hasn’t been a break for all though, as we’ve seen umpires appointed to representative games in the last two weeks. Tom Windlow was our representative two weeks ago at the AAFC carnival in tropical Hobart, and represented himself, the VAFA and the VAFAUA exceptionally. Whilst the VAFA boys didn’t play in the major final, Tom acquitted himself beautifully. Tom’s performances over the course of the carnival led him to be named the AAFC Umpire, following in the steps of the great Russell Davidson. Last weekend saw us send twelve umpires to Bendigo for the clashes against AFL Victoria Country. Congratulations to Merv Monty, Peter Bailes and Matthew Clinton in the field, Sam Beer, Matthew Watkinson, Damien Laing, Jack Punshon, Liam Kelleher and Hamish McCartney on the Boundary and Patrick Dwyer, Clayton Evans and Michael Driver in goals. In conditions that made Tom’s trip to Tassie look like a weekend at Noosa, our guys stood tall and showed themselves to be true professionals. Our boundary umpires, whilst young, were able to keep their composure and deliver first class throw ins all day, Matt Clinton and Peter Bailes showed how far they have progressed in the field, Michael Driver and Patrick Dwyer showed that they are amongst the best between the big sticks and, as for Merv and Clayton, it’s fair to say that you can’t buy experience and they were their usual calm selves. To all those that were selected for representative games this year, well done, you have represented us brilliantly, as we knew you would.
successfully cut out, however it left Dylan a paraplegic, leaving him wheelchair bound for the rest of his life. Dylan developed a love for sport and has competed for Victoria in swimming and for Australia in wheelchair tennis and wheelchair basketball. In 2008 at the Beijing Paralympics at the age of just 17 he became the youngest ever gold medal winner for wheelchair basketball. In 2014, Dylan returned to playing tennis and claimed the quad wheelchair singles title at the 2015 Australian Open and 2015 French Open. He is currently ranked #1 in the world and was recently crowned the Most Outstanding Athlete with a disability at the recent Tennis Victoria Awards. We look forward to hearing from Dylan on 24 August 2015. You can follow Alcott on twitter (www.twitter. com/DylanAlcott) and like his page on facebook https://www.facebook.com/dylanalcottofficial Remember that this is a compulsory function for all umpires however if you are unable to attend you must notify Lionel Katz (dinner@vafaua.asn. au) by 5pm July 27th. This is also the deadline to advise if you are bringing a plus one on the night. THE COST OF THE DINNER IS AS FOLLOWS:
All 2015 VAFAUA members: 1st year VAFAUA members aged 18 and under: Parents of 2015 VAFAUA members aged 18 and under: Partners/all other guests:
$75 FREE* $50 $85
*(please notify Lionel)
So now that we’re refreshed and ready to go, it’s time to get back into it and primed for the finals because that’s when the rewards really come.
PRE-FINALS DINNER The Pre-Finals dinner is fast approaching and we are delighted to announce Dylan Alcott OAM as our guest speaker for the night. Dylan was born with a tumour wrapped around his spinal cord which was operated on during the first few weeks of his life. The tumour was 52

UHS-VU/ FLEMINGTON JUST HOLDS Point Cook came hard in the final quarter of their game against UHS-VU with multiple goals to Brandyn Foley but fell two points short in the end. Leading by one point at half time, Point Cook will regret a poor third quarter, which left them chasing the game in the last term. To their credit they gave it a good crack with Alex Grigg playing a good game but UHS-VU was able to hang on with Jonathan Lay kicking three goals. Ivanhoe remains on top of the ladder with a comprehensive 50 point win over La Trobe. Cameron Simpson was best on ground with plenty of touches and three goals while Max Post also kicked three for Ivanhoe. Williamstown were too strong for Parkside, winning by 29 points. Isaac Romano put in a solid game for Parkside with four goals, however Williamstown were too strong with Tuck, Moore, Waters, Isac and Temby all kicking two goals each. A St Bernards victory over Old Paradians means that they haven’t given Ivanhoe any breathing space at the top of the ladder with both remaining locked in on 40 points. A five goal third quarter helped St Bernards break the game
open, eventually winning by seven goals. Five goals to Luke Di Lizio and two to Dylan Gollant helped seal the win. VAFA COLTS — TIPS IN BOLD UHS-VU v University Blues Williamstown v Old Paradians La Trobe v St Bernards Ivanhoe v Point Cook

HAILEYBURIANS AND ST KEVINS SPLIT POINTS Old Haileyburians came from behind in the final quarter to share the points in a thrilling tie with St Kevins in round 12. A seven goal first term from SKOB saw them out to an early lead before Haileyburians pegged them back in the second to go into half time only 10 points down. With the wind favouring one end, SKOB again kicked away in the third. The lead was 31 at the final change and the game looked almost over. However, Old Haileyburians had other ideas, kicking six goals to one in the last quarter to square the ledger before the final siren. Aaron Toy booted three goals for Haileyburians while St Kevins’ Prosser and Di Natale also kicked three. Northern Blues’ Damien Delle-Vergini kicked a bag of four goals, but it wasn’t enough as his team lost to Mazenod by 26 points. The margins could have been a lot worse too as Mazenod kicked 19 behinds. Ben Gannon was best on 54
ground for the Nodders who consolidate second spot on the ladder. De La proved too strong for Oakleigh with Jack Hanley’s five majors leading them to an 81-point victory. Therry Penola recorded the biggest win of the round by 135 over MHSOB. Daniel Tadinac kicked six and Stanley Skapetis five for De La. Peninsula remained undefeated with a 57-point win over Beaumaris while Monash Blues were too good for Parkdale. SPARTANS STORM HOME AFTER SCARE, UNICORNS MOVE TO THIRD Round 12, which was played in cold and wet conditions, did not provide any surprise results although two Section 1 forfeits detracted from the competition.
SECTION 1 Ivanhoe made the most of slippery conditions as they built an early lead against second placed Hawthorn. Down eight points at half time, Hawthorn exerted pressure in the second half as the Ivanhoe players tired. By kicking eight second half goals to one, Hawthorn went on to win by thirty five points. Evangelos Christou, who kicked three goals, proved an effective forward for the “Spartans”. On the cold Friday evening, La Trobe University outplayed Prahran Assumption in a low scoring game and won by twenty points. The “Two Blues” now find themselves a game and significant percentage outside the top four. Old Xaverians and Richmond Central both won by forfeit from North Old Boys/ St Patrick’s and Old Geelong respectively, which is disappointing for the sake of VAFA footy.
SECTION 2 Ormond revealed previously unknown form when they scored a 104 point victory over University High School-V.U. James Gates (eight goals) and Richard Morris (six goals) starred in Ormond’s big win. Kew, who were held goalless by Melbourne High School Old Boys until the third quarter, were never a threat to the “Unicorns” in a low scoring match. Their victory by twenty points saw Melbourne High replace Kew in third place. Jon Mould was superb for the defeated Bears as Stephen Grantham was best afield. The Albert Park-Westbourne Grammarian match was played in cold and drizzly conditions which enervated all players. Only three minor scores were recorded in the last quarter as Albert Park withheld all challenges to win by fifty-two points. Their best were: Adam Smith, Captain Michael Keating and 58
Corey Cox. For Westbourne Grammarians Jake Morrell, Michael Davis and David Hallatsch were best. Undefeated leaders St Francis Xavier led throughout against West Brunswick before winning by “Nelson” i.e. one hundred and eleven points. Brent Sheers was brilliant for the victors.
ROUND 13 PREVIEW SECTION 1 In a potential Grand Final preview, Hawthorn host Old Xaverians, the latter who won their Round 2 match by thirty points. This margin was greatly aided by the very accurate “Crocodile” kicking. Was this accuracy due to skill or loose play by the “Spartan” defenders, who do not experience pressure every match? We may learn more about this today on the small Rathmines Reserve where Hawthorn triumphed in the 2014 Xaverian match. I favour Old Xaverians to win because evidence points to their better recent form. A rise up the ladder awaits the winner of North Old Boys/ St Patricks and Old Geelong match. Season 2015 has been disappointing for both of these sides whose lack of available players has been an ongoing problem. I select North Old Boy’s/ St Patrick’s to win solely because the game is scheduled for the Gillon Oval. Prahran/ Assumption host Ivanhoe in an afternoon match. Victory is a must for Prahran/ Assumption to keep their final aspirations on track. Although Ivanhoe play an impressive game, they have found it difficult to maintain pressure throughout a match. Prahran/ Assumption is my selection. Their Round 6 Friday night clash against Richmond Central was surely the high point of the La Trobe University season because that night they powered to a ninety-five point win. This morning’s game should be much closer as I believe The Cardinals” form has improved and La Trobe could well have players on vacation. Picking the winner is difficult as I saw La Trobe dominate in Round 6. However this match is on the Bartlett Reserve, THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015
which is unknown to La Trobe players and so I am selecting Richmond Central to win and so insure a final appearance.
SECTION 2 Second placed Albert Park visit Melbourne High School Old Boys whom they defeated by eight points in Round 4. That day, the “Unicorns” had no answer to Beau Coyle whose five goals proved decisive. He must be quelled today if the third placed Old Boys hope to win. The small oval will prevent Albert Park opening up the match, which should work in the home team’s favour. I tip a narrow win by Melbourne High. In recent Rounds, Kew seem to have lost the sparkle they showed earlier in the season. Today they have the chance to halt their slump at the expense of Ormond. Two weeks ago, Ormond played their best game for 2015 when they had two major goal kickers to press home their advantage. While it has always been difficult for visitors to win on the Gunn Reserve, today I believe Kew will prove too talented and will take the four points. Superiority in Royal Park is at stake when University High School/ V.U. crosses the railway line to play West Brunswick. University High School/ V.U., while showing promise, have not been able to record more than one victory. West Brunswick, who too have faced difficulties in their first season, have shown glimpses of form. This afternoon I select them to win. Undefeated leaders, St Francis Xavier make probably the longest trip within the V.A.F.A. when they travel to play Westbourne Grammarians, who will offer spirited opposition especially early in the match. Overall talent will prevail and St Francis will win the match. SECTION 1 Prahran Assumption v Ivanhoe Richmond Central v La Trobe Uni NOBS/St Pats v Old Geelong Hawthorn v Old Xaverians SECTION 2 MHSOB v Albert Park Ormond v Kew Westbourne Gr. v St Francis Xavier West Brunswick v UHS-VU
