EDITORS WELCOME

WELCOME TO THE AMATUER FOOTBALLER At last it is here. The dawn of a new season and at this stage every single team is more than a mathematical chance of making history for their club, earning a lifetime of premiership reunions. There are two times of the year where football feels magical, the opening weeks of the season when everyone is full of optimism and of course the month of September when the optimism is consigned to just a few. The fact that both periods happen when the weather is warmer and the football free flowing and devoid of mud and misery might also have something to do with it. Summer footy season anyone? Don’t be ridiculous the football committees argue. ‘Who would buy our overpriced cups of tea and our over steamed hotdogs or burnt pies in summer?’ Fortunately the game we love is not about to move to the summer months. However what has transpired over the summer months is what will determine what is to come over the next 22 weeks. There is so much to look forward to, so much riding on the recruits, the extra training sessions, the new coach, rousing the group to new levels of intensity. At the core of it all are our clubs and in particular the senior team of each club and how they will fare in 2014 compared to how they finished 2013. Mazenod, are one club we should watch out for. Burnt badly by an Old Ivanhoe finals juggernaut, the Nodders will pose problems for many Premier B as they seek redemption for a missed opportunity. Another club channeling the pain will be Eley Park who so wanted to flourish a premiership flag for all the hard work they had done earning promotion. There are questions about all clubs that were promoted and relegated to new sections because each section is a new level. How will Emmaus St Leos, Glen Eira, North Old Boys St Pat’s, Parkdale Vultures and Old Carey all respond having had

sub par seasons in 2013. Which club will be the next Monash Blues, taking their second chance in a section? Going from lucky relegation escape to finals contending in the space of a season? Banyule, MHSOB, Monash Gryphons, and South Mornington all get that chance. Marcellin, Williamstown CYMS and Hawthorn played six finals between them in 2013, however they lost all of those six. Out in ‘striaght –sets’ is not a memory a club wants to hang on to for too long. It’s great to have the VAFA back this week and with it the weekly ritual of reading the Amateur Footballer on a Thursday night. We will again have the Amateur Footballer available for download on your iPad through a free app each week where you can check our photo galleries, watch extra videos and read all of the great content. We have some great new writers joining the team in 2014. Welcome them all to your clubs and please provide as much information about your matches and your club as possible, without it makes for a less interesting article. Before signing off I wanted to thank our writers from last year who will not be official scribes this year. Particularly our long time servants Di Langton and Darren Dawson, both are taking a well-earned break, although I am sure they will pop up at an Amateur ground or two over the year. We are always keen to give opportunities to young writers, so if you would like to contribute a story then please email me (andrew@vafa.com.au) Enjoy the football season everyone and enjoy reading the Amateur Footballer in 2014. CEO WELCOME

WELCOME TO THE 2014 SEASON Congratulations to the 24 players, led by Adam Bentick (St Bernard’s) and Trent Zimbachs (Collegians), who represented us so splendidly. Our coach, Simon Lethlean, is undefeated in this position, with significant wins in the last three seasons over the EFL twice, AFL Vic Country and AFL Sydney. During the summer this jumper was worn proudly in four matches in Ireland. Two wins against club invitational teams and two losses against the All Ireland team and combined Dublin universities team. The match against All Ireland was played one week prior to their match against the AFL. Whilst they were a much stronger outfit than us we certainly weren’t disgraced. Our relationship with the GAA was strengthened even further and our similar philosophies of playing for the love of the game enhanced.

What better way to kick off a new season than to retain the mantle as the leading football competition in Melbourne by defeating the Eastern Football League by 46 points and winning the AFL Victoria Metro Championships. The six metropolitan leagues were seeded by AFL Victoria with the VAFA as number 1 seed, pitted against the number 2 rated EFL. We had plenty to lose and little to gain but those who attended would have been extremely proud of the boys in the Big V. This team continues to uphold the traditions of the VAFA as we proudly remain the undisputed leading competition in the country. 2

During this trip we were also hosted by the Australian Ambassador to Ireland, Dr Ruth Adler, at her residence on the cliffs of Dublin. This was a memorable event highlighted by her speech where she encouraged our group playing according to the Amateur ethos and the wonderful Irish and Australian tradition of volunteering. Last week our season was launched with our traditional dinner of club presidents, secretaries and coaches in the MCC Members Dining Room. We were delighted to host the newly appointed Minister for Sport and Recreation, the Hon Damien Drum and the shadow minister the Hon John Eren. They were entertained by our after dinner speaker Matt Finnis, CEO of the AFLPA and soon to move into the CEO’s position at St Kilda. He enlightened us with his observations of the culture at successful AFL clubs and how he would endeavour to implement this at Seaford. We wish Matt every success in his new role. Over the past month we have joined with Collingwood Football Club and completed some research on altitude training. Sixteen of the VAFA’s finest were challenged in the hyperbaric chambers completing all sorts of cardio work. The fitness component has been completed and the results may improve our sports conditioning. This close relationship allowed our senior squad to utilise Collingwood’s training facilities to prepare for our rep match and I would like to acknowledge the support Collingwood has given the VAFA. There has been a number of changes at staff level with our GM of Football Tim Noonan returning to education. Brian Goodman’s role has expanded and he is now GM of Football and Umpiring. Sam Confait will assist Brian on the football side as the football admin officer and Olivia Crowe will depart the front desk and join the umpiring administration. Christian Burgess replaces Brayden as the football admin assistant. Allana Handley joins the VAFA staff on Monday to replace Olivia. Now to the footy. Today sees the competition commencing with a split round with all Premier matches commencing next Saturday. We welcome Canterbury and Westbourne Grammarians into the Association with both teams commencing in Division 4. Fifty–two clubs will play in our senior sections with Mt Lilydale and Masala fielding one team in the Club XVIII. In all there will be 26 premierships up for grabs with exactly 250 teams. Early in the season I enjoy focussing on the trials and tribulations of the promoted and relegated teams. Hampton Rovers (Premier C) and Kew (Division 2) are of particular interest as they dominated their respective sections last THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2014

year. Old Ivanhoe was recently in Premier B and on their first year back in Premier C, rallied to bounce straight back. They along with Mazenod should make Premier B interesting. When you add University Blues and Old Carey, both relegated from Premier, I believe Premier B to be the most competitive of our senior sections. In recent times AFL clubs have had a football facilities arms race – not something we have acknowledged at Amateur level – but this year we will see some great new investment. New facilities have been installed at St Kevin’s TH King and the University Oval pavilion will benefit the Melbourne University Football Club. On top of this, Beaumaris Sports Club have recently won a grant to enhance their facilities that will benefit Beaumaris. It is fantastic that local governments and businesses continue to support community sport. In the Thirds, Club XVIII and Under 19 sections, the Board decided that the most important element to the success of the section is to have the competition as even as possible. Accordingly we will field for the first time only 8 teams in U19 Premier and Premier Thirds with only 6 in the three Club XVIII sections. Promotion and relegation sorts out our competitive balance in the senior sections, but the other competitions are a moving target. We have taken into consideration numerous factors and are confident that each team, if organised well, have a genuine shot at finals. I wish all stakeholders in our game an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding 2014 season. Michael Sholly - CEO

PREMIER B

Blair Morton

@blairwmorton

OPENING SALVOS Welcome to the 2014 season and welcome to the four new clubs joining Premier B Section for what promises to be a fantastic year of footy. For those promoted into Premier B, a new opportunity looms to cement a spot in a higher grade of footy.For some who had disappointing seasons in 2013, it is the chance to emerge from mid-table mediocrity to finals contender; whilst for the relegated and frustrated, it is about redemption. Old Ivanhoe and Mazenod both earned a deserved promotion from Premier C last year for differing reasons. Mazenod dominating the competition in the home and away period, finishing ahead of their nearest rivals by 12 points on the ladder to round out the year minor premiers and rightly won their way through to a Grand Final and promotion. However Old Ivanhoe were just as impressive, fighting from third spot at season’s end to finish as Premiers, upsetting Mazenod by eight points in a thrilling Grand Final that has sparked a warm rivalry between the clubs. University Blues and Old Carey have both been relegated from Premier Section, after ending the year at ninth and tenth place respectively. Old Carey had a disappointing season last year ending their three-year stay in the top section with only one win for the year. Having retained all their key players and recruited a more top end talent, the Panthers will be determined to prove themselves as contenders in Premier B . University Blues were unlucky to be relegated, finishing only hald a game below Collegians to find themselves dropping a section for the first time in two decades. Given their quality and the fact they were unlucky to fall a section, the Blues shape up as one of the key candidates in Premier this year. University Blues play host to Old Melburnians in their season opener. These two clubs first met in the 1920’s so they have a fair history. The match shapes as the game of round one. Nathan Brown’s Old Melburnians were denied 4

a Grand Final berth by a solitary point in last year’s preliminary final loss to Old Trinity and for a club that lost only 4 games for the year in 2013, expect them to be making moves at the pointy end. The matches that always create intrigues are the promoted teams against the relegated teams. Promoted Mazenod take on relegated Old Carey at Central Reserve in what is certain to be a captivating contest and excellent barometer of the teams’ capacity to perform at this level. A win here is the beginning on the road to redemption for Old Carey; while a step in the direction of solidifying a spot in Premier B for Mazenod. Additionally elevated side Old Ivanhoe play last year’s fifth place finishers AJAX at Chelsworth Park. Old Ivanhoe are not long removed from this company and the battle for the Henry Jolson Cup will give the Hoes the chance to prove themselves worthy again of a place in Premier B. It will be a big day at the Pine Lodge with the 2013 flag unfurling and over 100 gathered for lunch, this is a club on the rise. AJAX were the nearly team last year. Their best was brilliant, but a mid season Maccabiah Games schedule clash saw some of their stars miss vital games that more than likely cost them a finals berth. Nevertheless with coach Leigh McQuillen at the helm for a second season, expect the game plan to be refined further and AJAX will again be thereabouts this year. Last season’s sixth placed Old Haileybury commence their year at home against the eight placed Caulfield Grammarians. Former AFL star and last year’s assistant coach Stewart Loewe takes the reigns as coach of the Bloods. The club will has had some fantastic success in the TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Mazenod v Old Carey Old Ivanhoe v AJAX University Blues v Old Melburnians Old Haileybury v Caulfield Grammarians St Kevins v Fitzroy

past decade but has suffered a lull of sorts in recent years. The same could be said of Caulfield Grammarians. Super coach Tim O’Shaughnessy returns for year two and the goal for both clubs is early wins. What better opportunity than an early spring day on a great surface? St Kevins host Fitzroy in a battle between last year’s fourth and seventh placed finishers. SKOB are in their third year under Daniel Harford and will be keen to prove themselves as more than just finals fancies in 2014. The club has a magnificent new facility and finally a permanent home due to open in the early rounds of the year and continues to produce quality footballers. This is the year they need to shake the recent finals monkey off their backs. Fitzroy, on the other hand, have the opportunity to emerge as a threat for the top four in 2014. After a disastrous start in 2013, the Roys under great leadership of Michael Pickering righted and steadied the ship to win enough matches to earn another crack at this level. Build on that this year and Fitzroy fans young and old will be smiling about the rise of the Roys. Season 2014 bears all the hallmarks of a being close one in the race for Premier B honours. Unlucky or disappointing relegations and the promotion of tough and resilient sides; mixed in with six clubs keen to take the next step or attempting to hang on for another season. It shapes as a genuinely unpredictable season. An early break in round one gives all sides an edge. Through the preseason clubs have kept their cards close to their chest. A ‘gun kid from the country’, an ‘under 19 that has become a man’, and the ‘fittest we have every been’ are all that has been offered by those in the know. Come Saturday night we will know a little more. Ahh the Footy is back.

PREMIER C

SET THE TONE WPreseason isn’t for the fainthearted. Grueling hill sprints, boxing classes, extra weight sessions, preseason camps and four months of intense training. This week sees the culmination of months of hard work with round one set to get underway. Have teams done enough in their preparation? Have coaches placed too much emphasis on team structures and game plans, neglecting the importance of building a strong fitness base? This week we will find out who has been prepared to work the hardest both mentally and physically to ensure they are ready for season 2014. The Premier C competition looks like a very even contest this year, and I expect all teams to be competitive. It’s hard to see any real standouts, but I think Marcellin, Pensinula and Monash will be the frontrunners. Despite losing two of their star onballers in (Jake Truefeldt and Bart Walsh), reports are that the boys from the bear cave in Banyule are set to rebound in 2014. Having only registered five wins last year the Bears will be keen to make amends. They have recruited extensively from the Northern Football League and they are expecting big things from their recruits. Forward Adam Barclay has enjoyed an injury free preseason and is set to take his game to a new level. Approach the Bears with caution, they can smell their first victim. The newly promoted Hampton Rovers will be looking to cement themselves in the Premier C competition as a serious threat. They will be full of confidence after an emphatic Division 1 Grand Final win last year. Marcellin will be determined to go one better than last year after they were defeated in the Preliminary Final, blowing their chance to go up a grade. They head into the season buoyed by an impressive preseason record, defeating PEGS in a tight tussle in their final hit out ahead of round one. However the Eagles will need to find another avenue to goal in 2014 with gun tall forward 6

Daniel Jones departing from the club. In addition they have also welcomed a number of youngsters who have filtered through the school system. The Monash Blues are aiming for another top four finish in 2014, and it’s looking like an achievable objective after a very promising preseason campaign. They have registered three solid wins from three games. The Blues have also managed to retain the bulk of their 2013 senior playing list, coupled with the arrival of former players Lachie Inglis and Joe Griffiths and the return of Tim Mackenzie who missed the second half of last year. I’m tipping the Blues to be a real contender this year. The Oakleigh Krushers are calling it the beginning of a ‘new era’ with the appointment a new Coach (Jamie Mollo) and an emphasis on blooding youth. Eight youngsters will hold down key positions in their senior side – including star forward Aaron Cloke. The Krushers will be hoping Cloke can replicate last year’s form which saw him boot 110 goals in the Under 19’s. All indicators suggest Old Camberwell will be much more competitive this year, having managed to recruit well and hold onto the majority of their senior list. The Wellers look poised for a big year after a positive showing in their recent practice match against Southern Football League Division One side Clayton. Fellow newcomers Ormond will be hoping to continue their rise up the ranks. However the Monders have remained tightlipped on their preseason endeavors. On the trade front experienced campaigner Matthew Robbins has left the club, however they have managed to poach Thomas Buckley from Beaumaris. Relegated at the end of last season The Parkdale Vultures will be keen to make their presence felt in Premier C. Despite losing talented big man Matthew Boland to the WAFL and a couple THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2014

WATCH EVERY PREMIER C GAME at www.vafatv.comcom

of other senior players, the Vultures remain confident that they can be competitive in season 2014. After a consistent year in 2013 which saw PEGS finish 5th, they have aspirations to play finals football in 2014. Perhaps the appointment of new highly respected Senior Coach Mark Murray and a host of other coaches will hold the group in good stead, ensuring they improve on last year’s success. Down the Peninsula, the Peninsula Pirates are quietly confident about this year’s prospects. Former Pirate Full Forward Nick Claringbold, who took over as Senior Coach late last year, brings with him a wealth of experience and a solid understanding of his players. The Pirates are also keen to unearth some young talent with the likes of Sam Glenn and Tom Fledgen set for a break out year. Having undergone a rigorous preseason based on fitness, game structure and efficient ball use, the Pirates are primed for round one. Keep an eye out for new skipper Stu Grigg and Brett Brisbane.

TODAY I’m tipping a round one upset with the Vultures set to spoil the party for Hampton at home as they unfurl last year’s Grand Final flag. Marcellin, under the guidance of Jarrod Carlson will prove too fast and skillful for Ormond. The Blues will kick start their season with a win against Old Camberwell, but I expect it to be a closely fought game. PEGS will knock off a young Oakleigh outfit at home, but don’t expect this one to be a blowout. And Peninsula will continue its promising preseason form with a win against Banyule at home. Notes from the offseason OFF SEASON UPDATE Welcome back to another season of footy in the VAFA and whilst we have all been soaking up the rays at the beach, or taking that much needed international break away from the football fishbowl of Melbourne a lot has happened over the off season. VAFA DEFEAT EFL IN METRO CHAMPIONSHIPS

SEASON LAUNCH The 2014 VAFA Season was officially launched last week at the MCC Members Dining Room at the MCG. More than 340 people acknowledged new Life Member Simon Costello, nine new recipients of the Certificate of Merit and to hear from guest speaker Matt Finnis, CEO of the AFL Players Association (pictured). The season launch was a magnificent evening and if the Twitter traffic was anything to go by then all of our clubs thoroughly enjoyed both the fantastic location at the home of football and the content of the evening. VAFA CEO Michael Sholly once again did a magnificent job hosting the evening whilst the Toast to the VAFA was this year proposed by Sportscover CEO, David Lamb. VAFA Vice President Tim Nelson – in the absence of President Michael Hazell – officially welcomed all clubs to the new season. It was great to have in attendance both the honourable members Damian Drum MP, Minister for Sport and Recreation and John Eren MP, Opposition Minister for Sport and Recreation. All in all it was a fantastic night and a great way to launch the season. Catch all the videos from the night on VAFA YouTube: www.youtube.com/vafa1892 or the pics see page 15. 10

It was enough to bring a smile to even the biggest detractor of representative football. The VAFA is very proud of the representative program it has run since 1925. Providing the best players in competition the opportunity to play together at the highest possible level in community football is one reason good players continue to choose to play in the VAFA. In recent seasons the Eastern Football Leauge, had been gaining a lot of traction and notoriety for the standard of football they play. Through social media, blogs and forums as well as a little extra coverage in some of the mainstream media, a belief had started to permeate the wider community that the EFL was a better standard competition than the VAFA. There is no doubt it is a fantastic competition and on past encounters alone there is little difference between the two representative sides. However given the social media comments of many EFL supporters in the lead up to last weekend’s AFL Victoria Metro Championships, it was particularly pleasing to see the Big V win. VAFA TV WINS TOP AFL VIC MEDIA AWARD In November 2013, the VAFA won the award for Best Use of Online Media at the annual AFL Victoria Community Football Media Awards.

The Community Football Media Awards cover every community football competition in the state and the respective media that cover these competitions. The VAFA was the only Melbourne metropolitan community football

competition to win one of the 10 awards on offer. Over the past two seasons the weekly VAFA TV show has taken supporters of the VAFA inside our clubs, seeing first hand the characters that make up our competition each week. The continued support of all clubs and the willing participants in the VAFA TV competitions each week has made the show a must watch each week. Respected AFL journalist Mike Sheehan was the guest speaker at the Awards and made special mention of VAFA TV in his address: “One of the challenging things about what you all do in covering community football is to have a point of difference, that is clearly something the VAFA have done, reminding us why we love community football.” Congratulations to Andrew Leonard who has put the show together for the past two years and look out for bigger and better things from VAFA TV in 2014.

WESTBOURNE GRAMMARIANS AND THEIR NUMBER 1 FAN On Tuesday night the Westbourne Grammarians impression on us all and what a role model he is. Football Club welcomed young Rafael Moraes, It was certainly very humbling and in some Year 4 student, down to training for the first time way provoked reflection within us all on what’s to view his “Warriors” and accepted the Club’s important in our own challenges. Teams strive for premiership success but what’s more important is ways we as a club can provide and benefit from the community. Thanks to Mum, Natasha and Dad, Dom for bringing him down and thank you to Rafael for kindly accepting our invitation to be our Number One ticket holder.

Rafael was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma at the age of 4 and it was indeed an honour to meet this courageous little man in person (and the rest of the incredible family that surround him). LOVE THE GAME FORFOR THETHE LOVE OFOF THE GAME

Metro Championships NUMBER 1 IN COMMUNITY FOOTBALL Simon Lethlean reminded his players at half time that the EFL teams play on grounds much smaller than Visy Park and that the VAFA side, would have more in the tank than their rivals at the end. So it proved to be. An arm wrestle until three quarter time gave no indication of the game breaking open the way it did with seven final quarter goals to nil, resulting in the VAFA defeating the EFL by 46 points in the final match of the AFL Victoria Metro Championships.

VAFA counter attacks or EFL errors to kick goals that first became breathing space but ended up becoming a rout. Murphy Ambrose won the best on ground medal for the VAFA for his three goals, consistent run and moments of brilliance. Goss was a concern for the opposition from the get go. At one point Goss had the entire VAFA score before a goal to Paule on half time gave the VAFA an 8 point buffer at the main break. Goss ended the match with the same score as the EFL combined (5.4). Earlier Tom Roach displayed what a good pick up he will be for Old Carey whilst a Matt Handley (Old Xaverians) chase the length of the wing, resulting in a turnover was just one example of many fantastic pressure acts that the VAFA put on the EFL. Whilst the VAFA failed to kick a goal in the opening quarter they were by no means out of the contest as the EFL butchered the ball going inside 50. It was a sign of things to come. The performances of Tom Caven (St Bernard’s), Jack Townley (University Blues) and Will Tardiff (Collegians) in thwarting the EFL attacks were magnified by their willingness to take the game on and run the ball out of defence.

Lethlean mentioned Cherry Street (it’s Cherry Road) - where the majority of the EFL’s squad and their coach ply their trade for Balwyn - in his half time address to the VAFA, reminding the players that “we are fitter than them, we play on bigger grounds, use our run, use our class”. Whilst it didn’t make the difference in the third term, the seeds were sown and eventually bore fruit in the final quarter as Murphy Ambrose, Brendan Goss (both Old Xaverians) and Tom Paule (Old Melburnians) were on the end of 12

There were no passengers in a mighty performance for the Big V. The final margin may have been flattering considering the close nature of the contest to three quarter time but is was no more than the VAFA team deserved. The pressure and tackling, particularly in the forward half of the ground, was magnificent. Paule, Joel Rice (Old Carey), Brendan Iezzi (Old Trinity), Matt Fieldsend (De La Salle), Trent Zimbachs (Collegians) and Ben Smithwick (Old Carey) hunted their opponents in packs. Ambrose and Bede Mahon (University Blacks) were given jobs on the Eastern’s best ball winners and both curtailed their influence and were ball winners in their own right.

Victoria Metro Championships take place. With three wins from three matches against the EFL in the past six years and winning the past two matches against AFL Victoria Country and AFL Sydney the VAFA continued a proud tradition. The VAFA’s strong representative program and indeed the fantastic history of the Big V proved to everyone what most Amateur people know. The VAFA is the number one community football competition in Victoria, if not Australia.

James Jorgensen (Collegians) and Anthony Lynch (St Kevins OB) were mighty in the ruck all day. Both players conceded many centimetres to the opposition tandem, but both were involved in pivotal moments of play, either intercepting marks or laying a crunching tackle. The skipper Adam Bentick (St Bernard’s) was well held early, but he, along with Simon Hogan (University Blacks) and Chris Waller (Old Xaverians) worked their way into the match and started to win the clearances and plenty of the ball too. Lach McQueen-Miscamble (Old Carey) was awarded the Best VAFA Player Award from the EFL coaching panel and Tom Paule was awarded the Spirit of the Big V Award from the VAFA panel. In the earlier matches the Northern Football League defeated the Essendon Distrrict FL by 37 points whilst Western Region FL beat the Southern FL by 36 points. All in all it was a magnificent performance from the VAFA. The Eastern Football League were very confident coming into this game and their supporters openly declared they would rightfully be the number one competition at the conclusion of the day. However this was far from the case and their attention will now be on a third/fourth play off the next time the AFL THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2014

SURFS UP IN SOUTH MELBOURNE You may or may not have seen the latest TV ad from the Bank of Melbourne, but those with a keen eye might have seen some familiar foes for a split second in the ad. A group of South Melbourne Districts players, new club President Alister McDonald and senior coach Anthony Quon were brave enough to spend a few hours before work in the Bay at St Kilda Beach so that their cameo could be filmed. Standing in the water in just their footy shorts the temperature hovering around 14 degrees on one of those unseasonably cold Melbourne summer days, hypothermia was not out of the question. The guys were in the water for over an hour to be in the background of a shot that lasted just over a second in the final cut. The club recouped a small fee for their presence in the ad. 14

NEW OPPORTUNITIES A new year brings new opportunities and Division 1 provides this in spades in what shapes to be a tight season ahead. For some, it’s a fresh start, for others it’s a chance at redemption but all have a point to prove as premiership contenders. The partial unknown of three new clubs entering the section spices up the possibilities, with all three containing merit to shake up the division. The older statesmen of section whether the previous season was good, bad or indifferent, get a chance at redemption and to take that next step closer to becoming premiers. Are they contenders or pretenders? Who will succumb to early season jitters? Who will be the surprise bolter? Preseason is an exciting but gruelling time, but that’s over. The real stuff starts now. Williamstown CYMS finished second in 2013 and held a promising position to be promoted. Although, after a forgettable finals series being knocked out in straight sets, they need to come back with a vengeance. Their finals performances were worrying but their season form was without doubt successful. The CY’s finished the year with 13 wins and made Fearon Reserve a fortress. They’ll be motivated to do one better in 2014 and expect a similar result this season. A top two finish is again on the cards. After a settled second half of the season, Prahran Assumption snuck into the finals in the last game of the season, but ultimately fell short of a third consecutive promotion. The Two Blues jumped Whitefriars to snag a spot in the top 4 only to be defeated by grand finalist Ormond in week 1. With a favourable early draw and new blood, Prahran Assumption will be a finals contender. Whitefriars dislike for Prahran Assumption will on show in round 6 when they first meet, but before the Friars can worry about revenge, they must start well. Last season needs to put on the backburner and concentrate on what’s ahead. The proposed merger with Donvale joining from the EFL will go on in the background, but the Friars have added some depth with some of Donvale’s players set to play at the club. With this in mind, the Friars need to jump out of the mid-table ensemble and prove 16

they’re a contender early, and it will be interesting to see which way they go. Good, bad or indifferent, Whitefriars have proved to be exciting to watch. Old Geelong had an up and down season last year, on their day they could defeat the best in the section, but could also lose the unlosable. Don’t expect the same Oggers this season and after round 3 we’ll know exactly which Old Geelong has arrived in 2014. They face all three new clubs in as many rounds leaving a lot of room to manoeuvre, and could provide the OG’s the confidence they need to become a contender once again. In 2013, the Old Mentonians were plagued with injuries and thus were unable to live up to their potential. The Panthers scrapped out eight wins last year, including defeating finalist Williamstown CYMS proving they can hang with Division 1’s best. These two played the match of the round in round 1 in 2013. And it was that good they’ll do it again. OMFC has high potential with plenty of young talent and if they get rolling early it could be their year. Bulleen Templestowe started last season with two wins on the trot and highlighted their capabilities, but then struggled managing only four more wins for the year. Already the Bullants have put their hand up to be an early bolter after a 143 point win over Old Paradians in preseason. But as we all know preseason form earns nothing more than a raised eyebrow. Hope to see this form follow on into the year. Melbourne High School Old Boys had a year to forget, finishing in the bottom two last season. However, after being given a reprieve due the exit of Werribee from the VAFA, the Unicorns get a second chance to prove their worth. MHSOB’s injury woes forced their hand in 2013 and expect TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Therry Penola v Old Geelong Old Mentonians v Williamstown CYMS NOBs-St Pats v Prahran Assumption Bulleen Templestowe v Yarra Valley Whitefriars v MHSOB

a better result in 2014. Their effort was never doubted and with a healthy list the Unicorns can easily climb up the ladder and hold their spot in the Division. The new boys from Division 2, Therry Penola and Yarra Valley, play the role of smokies in 2014. Can they be a contender in a higher division? I think the answer is yes. Therry Penola proved dominant in Division 2, ending the home and away with 15 wins before going on the claim the Premiership. Yarra Valley were no slouches either. Winning 14 times throughout the home and away and winning the second semi final – they just missed out on back-to-back flags. They are good enough to be aiming at three promotions in a row. While North Old Boys/St Patricks College return to Division 1 after a year in Premier C, everyone should be wary of the wounded club dropping down a section. Three new clubs raring to go provides the division exciting prospects for a lively season to come. In the opening round Therry Penola unfurl their flag when they host Old Geelong, a tough game to judge so early in the season, but backing new boys at home. Old Mentonians face Williamstown CYMS in what hopefully is another quality meeting between the two. Predicting the CY’s to come out on top. NOBs-St Pats play Prahran Assumption in Ballarat. This is a great initiative by NOBs-St Pat’s and is drawing on the school rivalry between St Patrick’s College and Assumption College. It’s not the first time NOBs-St Pat’s have hosted a match in Ballarat but it will be the first time against Prahran Assumption. Despite the ‘home’ advantage, I expect the Two Blues to be too strong. Yarra Valley travel to Ted Ajani Reserve as they meet Bulleen Templestowe. The Bullants to start the season with a win. Whitefriars face MHSOB and can’t see the Friars losing that one.

WHEN OPTIMISM MEETS REALITY Round 1, the only game all year that clubs, coaches and players alike are given six months to plan for. It presents the first legitimate test of the work all have put in over the summer months. To borrow a tired cliché, “You only get one chance, at a first impression”, and for new players and coaches; round one is that chance. As is the case for the majority of football leagues, both amateur and professional, around the country...the “coaching merry-go-round” was well and truly spinning over the summer. Four of the ten Division 2 sides have made changes, both in senior and assistant roles and all I’m sure all are hoping to capitalise on the optimism change brings. St Mary’s Salesian, made arguably the most significant appointment of the pre-season, signing former Fremantle and North Melbourne player Jess Sinclair as their senior coach for 2014. After 11 wins and a top four finish in 2013, I’m sure Coaching Director Al Martello is hoping that Sinclair will guide the Saints to greater glory in 2014. St Mary’s also welcome Braedon McLean and Daniel Weetra to Ferndale Park, who were recruited from Darwin as a part of the Palmary Development Program. Through the program, the club’s indigenous players are enrolled at Swinburne TAFE in Hawthorn, which affords players the chance to further their education. For Division 3 Grand Finalists Elsternwick, 2014 presents more challenges than just promotion to Div 2, but the unenviable task of rebuilding their list. As is sometimes the case after Grand Final losses, the Wicks saw an exodus of up to 10 players from that side, including three club champions. News isn’t all bad for the Bayside club, with the appointment of Anthony Grace as their new senior coach. Grace, a 222 game life member of Ormond spent 2013 at Beaumaris along-side senior coach Jason Misfud and boasts an impressive coaching resume. New captain and VAFA representative Aaron Thornton will hope to lead the Wicks through what could be a challenging year. 18

For Ivanhoe, 2013 was one they would rather forget. The summer months would have been spent finding further options forward of centre than Ash Close. Dynamic inside midfielder Paul Harris has been appointed as the senior coach for 2014 and will hope to turn their fortunes around. With a long and proud history, Ivanhoe will want to begin the climb back up to the Premier sections with a solid and consistent showing in 2014. Monash Gryphons had an interrupted preseason, with the unfortunate resignation of senior coach Frank Yaman. Yaman resigned due to personal reasons and the Gryphons announced Kye Cherian and Mitchell Welsh as co-playing coaches. After being lucky to avoid relegation in 2013, Monash will look to 2014 as a year of consolidation and a chance to improve their standing in Division 2. Anthony Quon and South Melbourne are very bullish about their chances in 2014, after the appointment of 212 gamer at Essendon, Sean Wellman to their coaching ranks. After three seasons as the backline coach at the Dees, Wellman will stand alongside Quon as a senior assistant. Quon said, “This addition shows the club is moving in the right direction by being able to attract a quality football person to the club.” By their own admission, Kew’s celebrations from their three premierships continued for some time after Grand Final day. Sam Bishop has arrived at the Bears from SKOBs as a senior player and new assistant coach. With depth one of their strengths, they will be looking at backto-back promotions and continue their climb up the Divisional ranks. Old Paradians finished strongly in 2013, winning five of their last six games, and after gaining praise from rival teams, a great consistency and spread of effort were keys over the pre-season. I have no doubt David Boundy and his coaching staff knew that, with too much left to too few in 2013. They have the ability, 2014 is the time to show it on a more consistent basis. After a preliminary final birth in 2013, Old Eltham is on the verge of gaining ultimate success. A similar story to Old Paradians, they have the ability but need to gain greater consistency, not just week to week, but during games. A Grand Final appearance and promotion will be the 2014 goals of the Turtles and nothing less should satisfy. After a dismal and winless 2013, Glen Eira will be set the task of consolidating their spot in Division 2 and avoid the dreaded back-to-back relegation and halt their recent fall from grace. It was a baron couple of years in Division 1 for Glen Eira and 2014 needs to be a year of growth and improvement. In St John’s second year under the tutelage of senior coach Steve Ware, and a year of rebuilding and consolidation in 2013, this year is a chance to continue their development. The appointment of Anthony Brannan as a playing assistant coach has been a positive, as well as the return of 2005 premiership player Chris Horbury as Director of Football. With solid pre-season form, they will look to build on that against South Melbourne this Saturday. Leigh Matthews said that,”You can’t win a premiership in March, but you can sure lose one”, even though our season starts on April 5th, many have fallen at the first hurdle of round one and never recovered, all 10 clubs will be hoping that is not them in 2014.

Therry Penola finished mid-table in 2012 but with new senior coach and favourite son Dennis Castaldi at the helm expect them to be a big improver. The pre-season focus has been on fitness, strength and basic skill work. In practice matches against Bulleen-Templestowe and Prahran Assumption, the players showed promising signs in adapting to the new game plan. After playing off the Grand Final in 2011, Therry will be looking to reach that level again after a disappointing 2012.

PREVIEWING DIVISION 3 At last the wait is over. Whilst the AFL season has limped into starting at least we can launch the Division 3 season with a bang. All 12 teams to play on the opening weekend, six matches for premiership points, momentum building in week one, now there is a novel idea. Good luck to all teams, here is what we know going into a fascinating 2014 Division 3 season.

ALBERT PARK Albert Park looks like they might really put it together this year, boasting an impressive run in the pre-season. The Falcons most impressive match was a comprehensive win over last year’s Division 3 grand finalists Elsternwick two weeks ago. For a club that is yet to win a senior premiership, and are forced to regularly start the season with a series of away matches they do a magnificent job. AQUINAS Aquinas have signed Ormond legend Russell Barnes to utilise his VAFA knowledge and take them a few steps further than last year’s qualifying final loss. The Blood’s defeated 2013 Division 3 premiers Kew in a practice match, so signs are saying he might do just that. Barnes is at his sixth VAFA club and there is no doubt he loves the challenge of taking on a group to the next level. Aquinas have the makings of a grand final side. ELEY PARK The Sharks will be looking to consolidate their fantastic campaign in 2013 by another strong showing this year in a tougher division. In the short term, Eley Park will be looking forward to grand final redemption in their rematch against the Northern Blues in round two. But with a new coach and some new players the Sharks will need to gel quickly in a more challenging section.

things can only improve for the two blues. Only managing two wins last season, both came in a very competitive end to the year, so expect the club to carry that form into the early stages this year.

LA TROBE UNIVERSITY The Trober’s showed plenty of promise under player coach Brenton Hunt last season and the young list will be hoping to move up the ladder into finals contention this year. Hunt will need his side to put in more four-quarter performances to thrive under his reign. NORTHERN BLUES The Blues won’t have the element of surprise at their disposal this season after shocking the VAFA to win the Division 4 flag from sixth position on the ladder in 2013. Run and carry will again be their trademark as they look to expose sides with their pace and risk taking ability. A promising group of youngsters are the engine of this side and the club will be keen to continue to rise up the ranks of the VAFA. POWER HOUSE Ant Voyage’s squad will be looking to improve on last season’s tenth place with a host of new recruits joining a fit and committed 2013 playing group. Voyage believes his side has a strong sense of clarity and belief heading into the year but only time will reveal if they’ve come back harder, better, faster and stronger. RICHMOND CENTRAL New senior coach Marcus Goonan has inherited a fantastic culture down at the snake pit and all reports are that Richmond Central are ready to take another step this season. The Snakes built a reputation for winning using their forward firepower last year, leading the competition in points scored. SOUTH MORNINGTON The Tigers barely clung onto the final safe spot in Division 3 last year after suffering an exodus of players following their 2012 premiership in Division 4. New coach Tony Garbers will need to look into his bag of tricks in order to improve on last year’s three wins for South Mornington. ST FRANCIS XAVIER Hutchinson medal winner Dimitri Dimakopoulos will be itching to get back on the park and put last year’s finals campaign in the back of his mind. The X-men made their home ground a fortress last season, only suffering the one loss in round 2 to Richmond Central and there’s no reason this year won’t be similar. SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY The Razorbacks were more than competitive last year, suffering five losses by fewer than two goals and a draw to finish in ninth place. George Koumantatakis should be looking to have them playing in the finals in their second season in Division 3. UHS-VU David Wallace is primed to tackle his most challenging year yet, with UHS-VU suffering some experienced players departing in the off-season. It would take a brave person to write them off though, as they’ll be looking to avenge their straight sets elimination from last year’s finals series with the help on an in-flux of players from their Vic Uni connection. LACES UP FOR 2014 KICK OFF The clocks wind back, the temperature drops, sand is swapped for dew and zinc for Dencorub; Footy is back. 2014 sees plenty of familiar firms return, out to improve on last season’s results as well as a few fresh faces, desperate to make a positive impression on the rest of the competition. So who’s in, who’s out and how will they fare? Hawthorn AFC head in to the 2014 season looking to put a few demons to rest. After taking out the 2013 minor premiership; winning 14 games at a frightening percentage (over 200), the Hawks were sent packing in straight sets in the finals. A tidy preseason puts Hawthorn in good stead to ensure 2014 is the season they return to Division 3 and it is anticipated they will once again be one of the teams to beat. The Hawks begin their 2014 campaign against Box Hill North at Rathmines. West Brunswick will be looking to improve on last years’ preliminary final appearance, but won’t find it easy with changes to the playing roster and coaching staff. Replacing the experience of 2013 co-coach Matthew Drain will be challenging, but West Brunswick welcome an injection of new players and hope their enthusiasm will lift the group. The Pies take on Chadstone to get underway this weekend. Point Cook FC had a 2014 season that was not to be sneezed at. 11 wins from 16 games is a reasonable year by any standards. Whilst they were able to deal with teams below them with ease in 2013, it was an inability to challenge the top 4 sides that will need to be improved upon if they are to be serious contenders this season. Point Cook get under way against the Dragons in round 1.

@HandsomeHammyG

North Brunswick snuck in to the 6 last year, and based on their preseason, you’d have to imagine 2014 will be a similar year for the green and gold. That said, it is hard to gauge exactly where a team is at based on intra-club matches and club culture is notably strong as noble efforts have been made to rally around members of their community in the off season. A bit of an unknown quantity, North Brunswick could be one to be wary of in 2014. Box Hill North are set for a journey up the ladder if off field form is anything to go by. The club has retained the majority of its senior playing list and boasts plenty of handy acquisitions for season 2014. They will be up for the challenge of the Hawks away in round 1 as the club celebrates the 150th game of senior captain and last year’s leading competition goal kicker Dan Penny. The Dragons begin their assault on 2014 against Point Cook away. Cellar dwellers by no means, the Dragons will be keen to improve on last year’s sound debut season in the VAFA and ask serious questions of quality opposition. Having developed a feel for the pace of the competition last year, you’d imagine the only way is up for the Dragons in 2014. Manningham Cobras: There is a buzz in Cobraland that 2014 is going to be a solid season. Several changes to the coaching staff including the acquisition of former VAFA state representative and competition Best & Fairest winner, Jack McDonald as senior coach marks the start of a new era at Manningham. After a lacklustre 2013, the Cobras will look to embrace the changes at the club and set about climbing the ladder in 2014. SPORTS INJURY CASUALTY - 316 Malvern Road, Prahran

Chadstone FC: Like the Cobras, Chadstone will be keen to forget 2013 and set about improving under a new coach. Ken Schwab takes the reigns having developed a reputation as a professional operator after a lengthy stint at Camberwell Grammar School and more recently, Eley Park. A new direction is just what the club needs after failing to register a win last season; fans and players alike hope that direction is ‘up’. Canterbury: The VAFA welcomes Canterbury FC to the association having accepted their application to transfer from the Eastern Football League at the conclusion of 2013. Last season proved challenging for Canterbury as they went winless, however a new challenge awaits the club in 2014 on so many levels. With a proud club history as one of the oldest sporting clubs in Australia, the Cobras will be keen to make a mark on the VAFA as early as round 1 v Old Westbourne. We wish them well in the VAFA. Westbourne Grammarians join Division 4 as a new club created out of the split over name changed Wyndham Suns (formerly Old Westbourne). Having retained most of the senior players from Old Westbourne’s relegated Division 3 list and adding a few more likely types, Westbourne Grammarians are one of the more interesting stories of 2014. Hungry for success and the chance to get a senior jump on rivals Wyndham Suns who were unable to enter a senior team this year, expect Westbourne Grammarians to feature well this year. The Grammarians tackle fellow Division 4 newcomers Canterbury away in round 1. The rest of the competition will look on with keen interest to gauge the form of these two sides.

CLUB WAREHOUSE RISING STAR 2014 Club Warehouse have been a sponsor of the VAFA’s Rising Star Award for a number of years and in 2014, they have renewed their sponsorship of this prestigious award. Each week a player under the age of 21 is nominated as the week’s Club Warehouse Rising Star. The winner of 2014 Rising Star will then be selected from the weekly winners throughout the season. Last year’s winner Chris Mangoni made a huge impact at St Bedes/Mentone Tigers and the VAFA in his first season in Premier Section football. Whether playing down back, up forward, or running through the midfield, his ability to create space, and win the ball is second to none, and has been a great catalyst in many of his side’s victories during the season. Chris represented the VAFA at U19 level against

AFL Victoria Country and played in the Tigers’ losing Grand Final side. The winner of the award receives a trophy with the winning club to receive $1000 from Club Warehouse. Good luck to all the young players who are nominated for the Club Warehouse Rising Star award in 2014.

@GeoffreyReilley

5 YEARS AGO – 2009 St Bedes Mentone Tigers made their position clear when they smashed Old Essendon 27.13 to 5.8 in one of the most one-sided, first game contests in A Section for some time. 13 goals up by halftime the Tigers showed no mercy and everyone jumped in on the act as far as goal scoring was concerned. Best: Phibbs (3), Curcio, P Wintle, McGettigan (7), Richards, Power (StB) and Clifton, T Biggs, Trajkovski, Williams, Flaherty, Day (OE). VAFA milestones included Charlie Holst (Collegians) playing his 100th game. Charlie had overcome many injuries to reach the ‘ton’. Andrew van den Dungen chalked up 150 for Old Brighton and had established himself in recent seasons as an important defender. Scott Curatolo, in his 9th season at Old Ivanhoe, reached 150 games. Scott had shown incredible durability over the journey and had played regularly for the VAFA representative team. Old Haileybury were able to entice AFL great, Robert Harvey, to turn out for The Bloods to play with his former St Kilda teammate Stuie Loewe against Old Trinity in B Section. Although leading at half time, the OT’s ‘upped the ante’ and with Andy Cultrera in outstanding form (7 goals) the OT’s won easily, 20.12 to 15.7 10 YEARS AGO – 2004 Despite losing three big names from the previous season, Marcellin surprised Old Xaverians and powered away in the final term after a very close contest for three quarters. Leigh Hansen’s three goals in the final quarter were very important and the Eagles looked very fit, very organised and very good prospects for the season ahead. Best: Cox, Dobson, Addison (3), Bardon, Browne, Carmody (M) and Beetham, Mollard (3), Ford, Purss, McDonnell, Ryan (OX). Special mention was made of the Elsternwick Amateur Football Club’s 90th anniversary celebrations, especially as they were to play their 1500 game of amateur football later in the season. 42

One of the oldest amateur clubs, Elsternwick had also played in another competition before joining the VAFA in 1914.

20 YEARS AGO – 1994 Old Melburnians went to the top of the A Section ladder with a resounding victory over St Bernards, 22.20 to 11.7. St Bernards were completely run over in the second half with multiple goal kickers for OM’s resulting from their constant sharing of the ball. Best: Teal, Thompson (3), Berry, Theodore, Stuckey, Nicholls (OM) and Chatfield, Comito, Vassallo, Gallagher, J Gollant (3), Purcell (StB).

30 YEARS AGO – 1984 It was a great day at Kew when Terry Hayes played his 300th game. Since joining Kew, Terry had won the B & F 5 times and had been runner-up on no less than 7 occasions – a fantastic record. Terry had joined Kew in 1965 and had coached them to a long awaited premiership in C Section in 1979.

40 YEARS AGO – 1974 Ormond unfurled their third, successive A Section pennant but were then defeated by North Old Boys 15.9 to 12.19 citing ‘bad kicking is bad football’. Best: Borcich, Biagi, Agnoletti, D Maguire (4), Drew, Carroll (NOBS) and Wood, I Cameron, Ladd (3), Burnie, Pearce Dove (Orm). Old Brighton congratulated Graeme Templeton who ran out for the 208th time to break the club record. His great strength and ability earned him the respect of teammates and foe alike!

50 YEARS AGO – 1964 Coburg were too strong for Old Xaverians although the Xavs fought back strongly to draw close in the final quarter before goals from Salter, Scanlon and Ebbage sealed it for Coburg 14.15 to 10.15 in an entertaining game. Best: Hillyear, Scanlon (4), T Salter (Cob) and Slattery, Lawler, Wardlaw (Xavs). In B Section Old Scotch defeated an inexperienced Parkside 12.18 to 5.12. Best: Perry, Cornish, Frew (Sco) and Purcell, Byrne, Clancy (Par). THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2014

U19 Premier with Olivia Crowe

How quickly time flies, seven months ago we were celebrating the completion of another successful VAFA season. Players had a few months off to recover from a long year, and before you know it the planning for the 2014 season began with the commencement of preseason. With all that done and dusted it’s time for the real deal and the U19 premier section looks to be an exciting one. This year sees the section downsized to eight teams from ten last year. These eight clubs Old Xaverians, St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers, De La Salle, St Kevins, Beaumaris,

@Liv_Crowe

St Bernards and Old Melburnians all played in this section last year and will be looking to continually show improvements and make amends on their 2013 season results. The drop to eight teams was a decision made by the Board to ensure the competitive balance of the best U19 competition in Victoria. With some very good matches to kick off round one, it will be tough to tip a winner. Last year’s grand finalists St Bedes/Mentone Tigers and Old Xaverians will no doubt be up there again this year and it will be interesting to see who can match it with them as the season progresses. Best of luck to all teams. I wish you all the best for season 2014.

U19 Section 2 Report

@LewisEmmerson Three new additions in Old talent. 4th Collegians – They will be buoyed by Brighton, Whitefriars and their finals appearance after storming home in the Uni Blues will add healthy latter part of last year. 5th Whitefriars – Winning competition to predicted the Sect 3 flag from 4th last year was sensational ladder leaders Fitzroy, Parkdale and the addition of Donvale players to help too. and Collegians. 6th Old Trinity – Will hope for a more consistent season this year, as the talent is there. 7th Caulfield 1st Fitzroy – It’s hard to go past last year’s premiers. – They’ll be confident after matching it with 2nd Parkdale – Despite losing upwards of 8 players the best in 2013. 8th University Blacks – Won to the seniors, they have brought in a talented some games against quality opposition last year, crop of new players ensuring the Vulture’s feature consistency the key. 9th Mazenod – They’ll want deep into the finals. 3rd Old Brighton – Couldn’t to claim more than their 6 scalps last season. 10th match it in Premier last year winning only one University Blues – Were disappointing last year in game, but it’s a new season and Brighton has the Premier, but expect them to improve.

U19 Section 3 with Tom Connolly @tomconnolly15

Welcome to the 2014 VAFA Under 19 Section 3 for 2014 ! What a year we have ahead of us, another year of exciting football from some of the VAFA’s young and talented men! The Grand Fnal last year was a thrilling game with both teams going neck and neck for the whole game, but at the end of the day it was Whitefriars beating the AJAX by 8 points to take out the Under 19 Section 3 Premiership for 2013. Five new teams 44

(Marcellin, Old Carey, Old Ivanhoe St Mary’s Salesian and Therry Penola) join the section, whilst premiers Whitefriars were promoted. Other teams will find their level elsewhere. We have much to look forward to this year, Section 3 of the Under 19s always tends to be a very competitive section. So strap your selves in ladies and gentlemen because this is going to be one hell of a season for all of the clubs. Good luck to all the teams for season 2014 and I look forward to seeing some exciting football. ! THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2014

After the split of Old Westbourne last year, we now welcome Wyndham Suns and Westbourne Grammarians to U19 North, and anticipate their playoff this season. We must also welcome Yarra Valley to the competition who were promoted after taking out the U19 Division 3 premiership last year. Ivanhoe waits a successful season as key rivals leave the competition leaving an opening for them to play off for the premiership this year. This will

After winning just one game, Old Paradians can be backed to work hard and increase their final standing by August this year. THE REAL STUFF LET THE GAMES BEGIN

Footy pre-season is hard, really hard, and it’s no different for the VAFA’s men and women in green. Now, with a couple of months of hard training and a practice match or three in the legs, it’s Round One. The real stuff.

EARLY MILESTONE Veteran goal umpire Bob Seymour notches up his 500th VAFA game this weekend when he strolls out at Therry Penola with old mate Ronny Martyn. After 5 seasons with the VFA followed by 2 at the Footscray & District League, Bob joined us in 1987 and has been with us since. Bob combines this with umpiring cricket in summer, and at the MCG was recently presented with an award to recognise his 50 years’ service to Victorian cricket.

PRACTICE MATCHES CAN BE HAIRY Administrative nightmares. At times arranged hastily, at unfamiliar venues against non-VAFA teams and non-standard starting times. Add to this umpires and their lack of availability. We hear some interesting “reasons” for this: work, study, cricket finals, holidays. All these are popular in February/March. Just to show how times have changed with generations X, Y and Z, here’s the most common excuse we heard. “Sorry, I can’t umpire Saturday morning because I have made other plans.” What these plans are, the coaches are none the wiser?!

NEW POISON PEN The opening round of the season is an exciting time for all involved, including us here at Umpires Corner, where a key change has been made in the off-season. Column stalwart Leah Gallagher is donning the red vest with a nasty bout of writer’s block, bringing super sub and 2013 Golden Whistle Award winner Kit Harvey to these hallowed pages. Harvs was a part-time contributor last season and is keen to add to his portfolio. We’d like to thank Leah for many years’ service to this page. “Thanks, Macca, Leah’s shoes are going to be hard to fill! It certainly has been another big pre-season at VAFAUA HQ courtesy of fitness coordinator Wayne “Chuck” Hinton. I was fortunate enough to umpire the AFL Victoria Metro Championships game between Western Regions Football League and Southern Football League at Princes Park last weekend and felt more than physically ready. Joining me in the field (in hot pink) were Dave Lepair and Ben La Vale. Umpiring at the AFL-

standard home of the Carlton Football Club was an experience I’ll cherish for years to come. Led by former Collingwood star Jason Cloke, Western won comfortably, but the game was hard-fought for its entirety. Switches of play, long kicking and high skill efficiency were features of Western’s game. That meant plenty of hard running for us. The match was characterised by play that bounced back and forth between the arcs. At the start of the last quarter, that saw me get stuck in the notoriously gruelling “mid-zone” for several minutes. My face definitely matched my uniform. A shout out to Ben for getting me out of there as soon as he could, even if that came after I said “get me out of here, mate!” Congratulations should also go to the other members of the team in that SFL v WRFL game. On the boundary were Hugh Bennett, Remy Cadman, Jack Cooper, & Mitchell Jones, with Clayton Evans and Dominic Napoli waving the flags.”

SNAP HAPPY. During last week the umpires posed for the traditional association photograph. AD did what he could to organise the troops, but goodness knows he didn’t volunteer for that job. 30 minutes and 27 bad “bunny ears” jokes later, the photo was taken. I’m sure we’ll share it here when it becomes available.

Olivia Crowe

@Liv_Crowe

WELCOME TO 2014 As you close the door on another season, before your know it, the door opens on a new one. Welcome to season 2014. After a nice break and a no doubt a long preseason, the best U18 players in the VAFA are raring to get into the footy. This year, the Under 18 section has downsized to six with the introduction of three new teams in Mazenod, St Bernards and South Melbourne Districts. These three clubs will no doubt be endeavoring to make their mark in the section along with the returning Point Cook, UHS VU and Williamstown CYMS. The experienced U18 clubs know what this section is about and they will not be keen to let the new kids on the block come in and steal their thunder. The clubs from the West seemed to enjoy playing in this competition as both Point Cook and Williamstown CYMS had reasonable seasons last year, finishing top four and they will be aiming for a an even better result this year. Their experience and previous successes in the

section will no doubt be an advantage for them in 2014. UHS VU will be looking to improve again after a dismal 2013 with only four wins, a work in progress. Whilst the new clubs will be keen to get early wins on the board. With only six teams in the comp, every club will be aiming for finals. With no Kew in the competition this year, a new premier will be crowned. All teams will be firing up for their matches today to get the ball rolling with four points. Best of luck to all teams. I wish you all the best for a successful season 2014.

CLUB XVIII

Norm Nugent

IT’S GREAT TO BE BACK Welcome to season 2014. This year sees three sections of Club XVIII consisting of six teams per section with a few fresh faces of new teams joining the competition whilst a few teams will make moves into new sections. Hawthorn and Mt Lilydale are participating in Section 1 this year, as are second season club Masala. Mt Lilydale’s inclusion is at the expense of their senior side that couldn’t quite get the numbers to field two teams to remain in Division 4. Richmond Central are promoted to Section 2 as are Eley Park. Both were Grand Finalists in Section 3 last year. In Section 3 La Trobe University, MHSOB and NOB/St Pats enter teams in the competition. The annual availability of players is an unknown factor at several clubs. The introduction of the Thirds competition a few seasons ago has led to uncertainty as to which clubs can field a Club XVIII side. This season is no different, three sections should make for an interesting season and with six sides per section, it will mean that they will play the other five three times which could and have effect on the composition of the final four by seasons end. This always leads to uncertainty but with only six team competitions the competitive balance should ensure we see less forfeits and more closely fought contests.

SECTION 1 PREVIEW Masala, who won two games in their debut season have been promoted to Section 1 along with reigning Section 2 premiers Hawthorn. Masala have ambitions of becoming a senior club so with extra numbers and a growing support network they needed to move up a to the top Club XVIII section in order to take the next step. Hawthorn after a couple of missed opportunities finally won the premiership they so craved in Section 2 last year. Their reward besides years of reunions and creating history is to find themselves in the toughest Club XVIII pool with the Crocs. An interesting fact sees that four of the top 2013 sides within this section last year being De La Salle, Fitzroy, Monash Blues and St Bernards will not field sides in the Club XVIII this year. The biggest question to be asked is which team can challenge the Old Xaverians supremacy? History tells us that Prahran/ Assumption will feature prominently, whilst Mt Lilydale and Hawthorn should cope with the requirements of the sections competitiveness. Old Geelong can be expected to win matches, but their history over decades shows they can lose matches unexpectedly. Masala are the unknown factor, moving into section 1 and I hope they prove to be competitive.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2014

SECTION 2 PREVIEW

SECTION 3 PREVIEW

Home ground advantage may well prove a decisive factor in this Section. Therry Penola is hard to beat on their home turf at Fawkner Reserve and Williamstown CYMS know the vagaries of the Fearon Reserve winds better than any of their opponents. Section 3 premiers, Richmond Central and runners up Eley Park meet again which will no doubt be a fierce contest. Bulleen Templestowe will be hoping for better results than they achieved last season, whilst the strength of Emmaus/ St Leo’s claims is to be known as the season progresses.

Two of the 2013 section finalists in Kew and UHS-VU will again participate this year. The fruits of their underage sides should see them both feature prominently and have successful seasons. The three reformed teams and the debutant MHSOB have unknown quantities and we await their performances in Round 1 and results across the season to gauge their comparative strengths.

SECTION 2 Emmaus St Leo’s v Hawthorn Bulleen Templestowe v Therry Penola Williamstown CYMS v Ormond Whitefriars v Hampton Rovers

The very uncertainty about teams and player availability is the just one of the causes for the fixture delay and as VAFA headquarters assured me that there would be matches played this weekend I am inclined to believe them.

SECTION 1 Prahran Assumption v Monash Blues Old Geelong v Fitzroy De La Salle v Old Xaverians Oakleigh v St Bernard’s

So you heard it here first when in doubt tip the home team and here’s to a successful Club XVIII season in 2014.

SECTION 3 Richmond Central v Masala Eley Park Sharks v UHS-VU Dragons v Kew

CLUB XVIII (1)

Whilst it is always difficult to tip in the first week of the season it is especially so this week as at the time of writing, there were no fixtures to peruse. A safe bet in these circumstances is the tip the home team.
