TIME FOR THE BEST TO PROVE THEIR WORTH What a thrilling climax to the season in the Premier Sections with the relegation battles going right down to the wire. Whilst most of the competition’s focus centred on the match between Old Scotch and Old Xaverians, it was the relegation battle in Premier B that went mostly unnoticed. After Mazenod’s sterling victory over finalists Old Melburnians last week, it appeared that they had staved off relegation. Parkdale Vultures were not to be denied, winning their final game by enough to grab the 4 points and the required percentage to overcome Mazenod. Whilst the Premier Sections were still completing their final home and away matches two of our clubs have already gained promotion. Kew has risen from Division 3 to Premier C in consecutive years and showed a great deal of mental strength in overcoming Ormond. Ormond get their chance for promotion this week as they tackle Old Geelong who convincingly defeated St Mary’s Salesian. Following in the footsteps of Kew is traditional rival Ivanhoe. They have been the powerhouse of Division 2 and their victory against St John’s came as no surprise. Ivanhoe have been building a good base and it wouldn’t surprise if they were also able to progress through the sections. Old Paradians came from behind to inflict Northern Blues’ first finals defeat in the VAFA. They had a run of six consecutive victories before the weekend. Division 3 and 4 had contrasting results. In Division 4, the top three teams were all defeated giving only Canterbury the double chance. After going through the first 17 rounds undefeated the Cobras have lost their last two but still have a chance for promotion when they take on Box Hill North. In Division 3, Emmaus St Leos and West Brunswick easily accounted for their opposition and they need wins over Aquinas and Hawthorn

@vafaceo respectively to gain promotion. West Brunswick and Hawthorn battled out the Division 4 Grand Final last year and have built up a healthy rivalry. The William Buck Premier Section has four teams in great form contesting the finals. If De La Salle go through and win the flag they will go one better than Old Xaverians great run in 1996. At the turn, Xaverians had two wins and seven losses and managed to storm home under Nick Bourke to win the flag. De La Salle had only 1 win at the turn and has the form and momentum to go on and achieve the dream. Still they have to get past University Blues who have been going quietly about their business winning their past six. It is a must win game for St Bernard’s and Old Trinity as neither would want to come off a loss and face one of those two in the Preliminary Final. St Kevin’s has been the VAFA’s standout team and club in 2015. They won the Winning Edge Club Championship, have already held up the Premier Thirds Premiership Cup and look ideally placed to win promotion to the William Buck Premier Section. However there is an inner belief at St Bedes Mentone Tigers who have a wonderful record at Sportscover Arena. Since being relegated in 2011, Marcellin has played in the finals each year in Premier C and deserve promotion. But promotions are not given away and Monash Blues has been right on their heels all year. The other finalists, Old Ivanhoe and Old Haileybury, have both been in the Premier Section in recent years so they have the experience to win finals. At the conclusion of the season the VAFA host a few events that are worth considering. The Woodrow Medal will be presented at Crown’s River Room along with all the other sections Best and Fairest Awards. The VAFA Grand Final Lunch at the Grand Hyatt is being held on Friday September 18, the day prior to the weekend’s Premier Grand Finals. This year Barrie Cassidy will be grilling Leigh Matthews on the issues facing the AFL with Greg Champion entertaining the crowd. The focus here is on celebrating the VAFA Grand Finals along with sharing VAFA camaraderie.

FAIRYTALES AND NIGHTMARES First to the fairytale. De La Salle was 1-8 at the halfway point of the year and destined for Premier B. They have effectively played nine sudden death finals in a row and now they get the privilege of playing a 10th. Congratulations, it is one of the great narratives of the year. Clubs in similar predicaments will reference the De La scenario for years to come. De La booked an unlikely September date with a win over Beaumaris. The nightmare could have occurred for any of three clubs. Old Scotch were the ones to realise it though. Falling to rival Old Xaverians any time is worn poorly by the Cardinal faithful. However, that it was the Xavs that sent them packing back to Premier B for the first time in 35 seasons will make the pill all the more bitter to swallow. Mark Passador said on Inner FM on Saturday morning that the first port of call was to win and trying to win by a certain margin was fruitless unless they could secure the four points. Alas Old Scotch was never in a winning position throughout the 120 minutes. They kicked the first goal of the game, but home supporters had little to get excited about from there on. Xavs brought their A-Game or rather a modified version of a game plan that has served them so well over the past two decades. Contested football, multiple repeat stoppages and then finally once the battle of attrition was won, quick ball movement that resulted in a goal seemingly against the play. The good news is that Passador has been re-signed. The re-build for the Cardinals should be a positive experience. They are certainly not a Premier B side, but bouncing straight back can be a challenge if everyone is not on board. Old Xaverians will have their own re-build. Mercuri, Cadyn Beetham, Larkins and Ball are all on the wrong side of 30, Allan and Handley will join that group next year. Premierships are hard to win with that age profile. What’s more three of those names were in the Xavs’ best last week. If you didn’t have a good week, check out the vision at the final siren of last week’s game between Uni Blacks and Collegians. The scenes of jubilation and emotion shown from the Collegians players 2

@ Lennytalk on the realisation they had avoided relegation is what makes this competition so great. Blacks players too looked crestfallen, clearly oblivious to the fact De La Salle had already ensured they wouldn’t play finals. The Gay, that’s OK! Game was both a celebration and a serious contest for both sides and Blacks (or rainbows as they were for the day) took the game by the scruff of the neck early. Blacks had the game under control before Collegians stormed home with 7 straight final quarter goals. Every one of them celebrated like they were on the way to another premiership. It was heart-warming stuff. Congratulations to both clubs for the support they gave the day. Collegians live to breath another day, whilst Blacks’ premiership defence is over. De La Salle didn’t play at their best but given the plight of Beaumaris in recent weeks, they didn’t have to. Beauy – as they have done often this year – matched their opponents in the early going before gradually losing control. Hugh Nicholson added another good game to his bulging CV, whilst Leigh Harrison was still fresh enough to boot four goals in a solid outing. Beaumaris bid farewell from Premier and let’s hope they return soon. University Blues have put together a solid run into September. After being decimated by injuries early, the Blues have gradually found their form as players returned. Their one point win over Old Trinity demonstrated again they can match it with the best. The T’s lost top spot, but few friends as they mounted yet another last quarter comeback. Again a slow start was a concern for Adam Andrews, look out for a fiery opening in the second semi. St Bernard’s will wear their blue shorts in the second semi final after they stole top spot from Old Trinity courtesy of their comfortable win over Old Carey. The Panthers were in the running early before the dam wall broke in the third term. Tom Sullivan was everywhere and kicked four goals whilst ten other Bernard’s players split the middle at some point during the match. Old Carey signs off on a season of promise, but were set back by WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER — TIPS IN BOLD St Bernards v Old Trinity University Blues v De La Salle

loss of both players and confidence in the second half of the year.

message. It’s a toss of the coin but I am going with the T’s to pinch this one by 7 points.

FINALS PREVIEW

It’s a shame one of De La Salle or University Blues has to leave the competition at this point. Both are wonderful stories. Blues were relegated in 2013, then recovered in devastating fashion in Premier B and are now chasing back-to-back flags. Whilst these pages have been filled with superlatives for De La Salle in recent weeks about where they have come from in the past nine rounds. For the neutral, this clash at Sportscover holds great appeal. De La beat Blues at the Uni on their back nine hot streak and I don’t think they have spent all their tickets yet. De La Salle to keep the rags to riches story going and salute by 11 points.

It seems like an eternity ago that we first confirmed that St Bernard’s would meet Old Trinity in the second semi final. A week’s rest and Grand Final berth is on the line but so too is a mental edge. The sides traded thrilling home wins this year so the match at Highgate (in Cragieburn for the uninitiated) could be a major coup should they meet again. Old Trinity have never played in a William Buck Premier Grand Final, but you get the feeling that won’t bother this young brigade. Anthony Rock’s men know that it’s a long time before you get this opportunity again; they were here 12 months ago. St Bernard’s exited in straight sets last year so will have retribution on their minds. Neither side is in blistering form, but they have both been passing time waiting for the real stuff. Adjust early and keep your heads, will be the

ST KEVINS WIN 18 AND PREPARE FOR BATTLE WITH SEPTEMBER DEMONS And so we reach the pointy end of the Premier B season with the completion of Round 18. St Kevins completed a remarkable 18-0 season with a 97-point demolition of Old Brighton. The Tonners just managed to hold on to fourth spot ahead of Ajax by virtue of a superior percentage. St Bede’s/ Mentone Tigers dispatched Caulfield by 80 points, which was assisted by a seven goal to one final term. Luke Velluto kicked four for the Tigers to finish second on the goalkicking, ten behind Jake Lew. Old Melburnians sealed third position and overcame a slow start to defeat Fitzroy by 15 points. The battle of the two promoted sides of 2015, Rovers v Vultures, ended in a 41-point victory to Parkdale. This lifted them from relegation territory and gave the Rovers their fourth loss in a row to finish the season. Mazenod found themselves relegated after falling to Ajax by two goals. I have reviewed Ajax, Fitzroy and Hampton’s seasons and previewed the two finals below. Next week I will review Parkdale, Mazenod and Caulfield. AJAX (5th, 10-8): The Jackas finished the season with a rush. They overcame Mazenod by two goals in Round 18, which was their sixth win in eight games. This resulted in them finishing equal with fourth-placed Tonners, but an inferior percentage meant they just missed out on finals action. They replicated their win-loss record and ladder position from 2014. Jake Lew won the league goalkicking with 69 goals and he was assisted by David Fayman (27) and Adam Caplan (23). Caplan also represented the VAFA in the U23 team, along with Nick Lewis in the U19 team. Fitzroy (6th, 8-10): The Roys finished their season with a 15-point loss to Old Melburnians. They got off to a sluggish start, losing five of their first six games, then recovered somewhat to win three in a row. The Roys spent the latter part of the season around the middle of the ladder and just couldn’t find any consistency. Their sixth place finish meant they improved two games and two ladder positions on 2014. Rory Angiollela (Prem B-Div 4) and Daniel Bisetto (Prem B-Div 4) both represented the VAFA during the year. Corbin Stevic (38 goals) and Bisetto (23) were their leading goalkickers. 4

Hampton (7th, 6-12): The Rovers were promoted from Premier C and spent most of the season hanging around just outside the top four, never quite managing to bridge the gap. They suffered a disappointing second half of the season, finishing with four losses in a row and eight of their last 10, perhaps a consequence of having to use 56 players during the season, more than any other Premier B team. Adam McNeil (Prem B-Div 4) and Daniel Corp (Prem B-Div 4) represented the VAFA during the season and their leading goalkickers were Daniel Corp (32), Matthew Robbins (28) and Ed Turner (22). Captain Leigh Fletcher and Richard Atkins also had very consistent seasons. Semi Final: St Kevins (1st, 18-0) v St Bedes/ Mentone (2nd, 14-4) The SKOBs and Tigers were clearly the top two teams in Premier B in 2015. The SKOBs completed a remarkable 18-0 season with a 97-point demolition of Old Brighton. They have spent ten years in Premier B and it would take a mammoth effort for someone to stop them from finally moving up to Premier division in 2016. The SKOBs have won by an average of 75 points and 10 of those wins have been by 80+ points. The Tigers won seven in a row and 10 of 11 to finish the season, and this streak was only interrupted by a 92-point loss, ironically to St Kevins. The two teams opened the season at Brindisi St and on that day the SKOBs got up by four points. The rematch was slightly more one-sided, nine goals to one in the last quarter giving SKOBs a 92-point victory. It is hard to go past picking St Kevins to win their way through to the Premier B Grand Final. Semi Final: Old Melburnians (3rd, 12-6) v Old Brighton (4th, 10-8) I find picking the winner of this final to be a significantly harder task. Both teams have spent the entire season inside the top four, but the ride seems to have been a fair bit smoother for PREMIER B — TIPS IN BOLD St Kevins v St Bedes/Mentone Old Melburnians v Old Brighton

the OMs who have won seven out of ten, and seem to have flown under the radar. They have improved one game and one ladder position on 2014. Following Old Brighton’s progress has been like riding a rollercoaster. They were the team to beat early on, spending the first four weeks on top. They proceeded to lose four out of five, won three in a row, then the last six or seven weeks have been win-loss-win-loss, finishing with 4-point and 97-point losses against the top two teams. The season series is split: the Tonners won by 55 in

Round 8 but were beaten by 15 in the rematch. An interesting stat is how both teams fare in the close ones. When the result is three goals or under, the Tonners have won 2 of 7 whereas the OMs have won 4 of 6. Keeping all this in mind, I’m picking Old Melburnians to get up, but not with any sense of overwhelming confidence.

BLOODS SOLIDIFY FOURTH PLACE It took Old Haileyburians until the final round of the home-and-away season but the Bloods finally locked up fourth place. Peninsula did all it could to steal the remaining finals spot with its victory over top-spot Marcellin, but Haileybury extinguished the Pirates’ chances beating Old Camberwell. Elsewhere, PEGS completed its season in Premier C with a win over Therry Penola. Both will be playing in Division 1 in 2016. Therry Penola’s fall from grace after two supreme seasons is a warning of the steep jump from the Divisions to the Premier Sections. Williamstown CYMS’ strong second half of the year continued as they defeated finalist Old Ivanhoe at home and Monash kept its good run into finals going and topped Oakleigh at Frearson Oval. Old Haileybury were forced to put in a fourquarter effort in the clash against Old Camberwell, however they emerged with the four points required to solidify its finals place. The Bloods had the edge at each change and it wasn’t until the fourth quarter where Old Haileybury could earn a match-winning lead. Four goals to one in the last term pushed the Bloods out to a 36-point advantage at the final siren. Nathan Waite led all comers with six goals for the Bloods and proved the difference in a best on ground performance. If Peninsula were to be any hope of stealing a finals spot it had to claim victory over Premier C’s best Marcellin. The Pirates were on song, keeping the Eagles to one goal in the first half, while they booted six of their own. One more goal for Marcellin in the third quarter and the game was wrapped and the margin too great. Peninsula fell short of a finals place due to external results but finished the season in stellar form with a 57-point victory over the minor premiers. Stefan Barbour kicked four goals for the winners and James Moignard was best on ground for his efforts. Whether Marcellin rested players or had just marked the game off as meaningless will be 6

discovered in the first final. Only pride was on the line in the meeting between relegation bound sides PEGS and Therry Penola in Round 18. Both couldn’t climb out of the zone but as the Bombers proved they had more fight left. Therry took a one-goal advantage in the first quarter but its control dissipated from there. PEGS nailed five goals in the second quarter to take the lead and kicked on in the next two terms to win by 25 points. Corey Bannister finished with a game-high six goals while Sahand Ghasimzadeh claimed best-on honours for PEGS. Williamstown CYMS had a tough time adjusting to Premier C football early this season, but strung it together in the back half of the year. Willy raced out to an outstanding start against Old Ivanhoe, despite an inaccurate start, bagging 2.9-21 and Ivanhoe was goal-less. The CY’s made up for it though in the second half, and didn’t let the lead slip even with the inaccurate goal kicking until the siren sounded Williamstown 20-points the good. Jack Gray starred for the CY’s with three goals. Monash ended the streak of upset losses for finalist contenders as they eased past Oakleigh at home. A five-goal first quarter showed the Blues’ intent and another eight goals in the second quarter finished the contest. The margin grew throughout the match until the siren cut Oakleigh’s woes at 89-points. Zacchary Ledin popped through five goals and was Monash’s best afield.

SEMI FINAL 2 PREVIEW Marcellin and Monash Blues will square off for the opportunity to grab a Grand Final place on Saturday at Casey Fields. The two share an even ledger at 1-1, with both winning away from home. Monash won the first contest at Marcellin College in Round 2 and the Eagles got their revenge at Frearson Oval. finishing on top, Monash come into the game strongly placed to win with a better run as of late. It will be a close contest in the double-chance final, but the Blues’ form suggests it’ll claim the first spot in the Premier C Grand Final.

SEMI FINAL 1 PREVIEW Old Ivanhoe and Old Haileyburians will play on the Sunday at Casey Fields for the opportunity to play the loser of Semi Final 2. Haileybury has one both previous meetings against Ivanhoe and seemingly match up well against the ‘Hoes. Ivanhoe has potentially played in more deafening victories, but Old Haileybury have had closer contests and will be somewhat used to the pressure that comes with finals football. Along with this, and the Bloods’ record against Old Ivanhoe, my tip sways in Haileybury’s favour to win the elimination Semi Final in a finger-bitingly close contest.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

Over the weekend, two classic district sides continued their journey up the ranks, whilst a couple of stalwarts were relegated for the first time in a long, long time. Starting with the great stories, Kew has earned their third straight promotion after a hard fought victory over Ormond in their semi final held at Sportscover Arena. Since 2009, when Kew was wallowing in Division 4, the club has achieved four promotions and two premierships. Whether they can take it one more step is yet to be seen, however the club will enter the Premier Sections for the first time since 1995. Ivanhoe was the other district club to cement their

GAY? IT’S OKAY! GAME

It is with great pleasure that I report back on the marvelous success of the Gay? It’s Okay! Game. Played in the finest spirit, with University Blacks looking resplendent in their rainbow strips and Collegians warmly welcoming the game of celebration, despite the serious ramifications if they were to go down on the day, this was a watershed moment for the VAFA. The game was a belter, not decided until the final minute as Collegians came out five point winners, despite trailing by 17 at ¾ time, to stave off relegation. There are people who believe that football and social politics should not mix. I could not be further from that field of thought. If anything, the two are intrinsically linked. Australia has made advances politically and sport has come along for the ride, and vice versa. Indigenous Australians played league football in a country where they were not officially citizens up until 1967 when Charles Perkins led the push for a referendum for change. Nicky Winmar’s image of racial pride still stands THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

place in a higher division next year after they beat St Johns by 28 points at St Bernards College on Sunday afternoon. Ivanhoe too have dipped as low as Division 3 in recent times, but they have now climbed two divisions in four years. 1986 was the last time Ivanhoe played Premier football, and although still an unlikely long term prospect, there is no reason that both Ivanhoe and Kew can’t return to the heady days of 1967 when both sides last participated in the top flight together. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves! Old Scotch was last relegated from William Buck Premier (formerly Premier A) in 1979. On the weekend they were condemned to at least a season in Premier B with their loss to Old Xaverians. Although many of their rival supporters were smiling with glee, Premier will be a little emptier for their loss. In other news, Therry Penola were unfortunately relegated back to Division 1 after two stellar seasons in 2013-14 and PEGS have dipped into the Divisions despite featuring in Premier as little as six seasons ago. as a moment that changed the landscape of Australian sport and Australian society in general. We’ve had players of late speak of their battle with their own mental health and drug addiction. Now, as a community, led by Lachlan Beaton, Jason Ball and Sean Towner and supported by so many, we can fight homophobia and other forms of sexual discrimination through conversation and a willingness to accept those who we perceive to be different from the norm. Football is a relatively simple game, but footballers, like every other ‘average’ Joe or Joanna, are not average people. We have fascinating figures within the VAFA with amazing stories, displaying incredible courage both on and off the field. To continue to move forward as an accepting, open and caring community, it is important for every club and the competition itself to foster conversations, embrace transparency and show leadership in maintaining the VAFA’s position as one of the leaders in social change in Australian sport. As shown on the weekend, it doesn’t have to harm the fact that we are, first and foremost, here to play some magnificent football! Great game to both Collegians and University Blacks and thank you to all who supported a magnificent initiative. 9

SNAGS ALL ROUND

As the year ended, so do the leading goal kicker tallies and the crowning of our new alien overlords goal kicking champions. There are some familiar faces amongst a few new big, bad, bustling lads. It is hard to really pick one champion goal kicker out of the group considering the amount of games played, the section they are playing in and so on and so forth. Thus I am proposing a challenge to the eight men listed below. The SHANE MUMFORD SNAG CHALLENGE. Hear me out, hear me out. Shane Mumford gets behind a BBQ, cooks up 150 sausages, chuck them in some bread with a bit of tomato sauce and see which one of the 8 can eat the most sausages in a quarter of footy. That is a quarter without time on. 20 minutes. If that is not the greatest idea I’ve ever come up with, I’ll eat my hat. My tip is Dale Collins, who managed a hefty 106 snags throughout the H&A season. Anyway, congratulations to the following players and all the goal kicking champions in every section, whether clubbies, reserves, unders or seniors, in kicking the most snags. See you at the SMS challenge.

Division 3 could not be tighter currently as each

of the four sides enter their fixtures in excellent form. Even Aquinas, who lost their first final to Hawthorn, had entered the finals series winning 8 of their last 10. Their two losses had come against the top two sides, the undefeated Emmaus St Leos and reigning Division 4 premiers West Brunswick. As we mentioned, Emmaus St Leos has had the perfect season thus far. However, despite their undefeated record, two of their past four games have been decided by 7 points or less and they came against Aquinas (2 point win) and West Brunswick (7 point win) so it would be a brave man to suggest that they are unbeatable. Until West Brunswick came up against Emmaus St Leos in Round 17, they had torn apart Swinburne by 123 points, Glen Eira by 116 points and UHSVU by 78 points at the end of their seven game winning streak. Their only two losses have been to Emmaus St Leos and their average winning margin is an incredible 60 points. The final side in the equation is Hawthorn, a genuine flag smoky. They started the season 1-3, but have won their past 8, including their final against Aquinas and are looking to redeem themselves from their lost opportunity against West Brunswick last season. What that loss taught us is that the perfect H&A season does not equate to a premiership. Hawthorn lost the grand final after going 20-0 into the grand final. Ironically, their reserves did the… reverse, beating West Brunswick who also was undefeated up to that point!

VAFA GRAND FINAL LUNCH IMPRESSIONS “In 2014, the Hawthorn Amateur Footy Club took half a table at the VAFA Grand Final lunch and invited three of our sponsors along as a thank you for their ongoing support. The lunch is in a fantastic venue, fitting of such a gala event and the entertainment provided (along with the meal) were ideal to impress our guests. Personally, I really enjoyed meeting some key people from other VAFA clubs, and it was nice that the official THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

run-down of the day included a presentation on stage to every club that won a senior premiership the previous weekend. I am looking forward to attending again this year and taking a few different sponsors along. Entertainment by Leigh Matthews and Greg Champion should be great – maybe Greg Champion will sing a footy song about Michael Sholly!!!” – David Clancey.

Congratulations to De La Salle’s LEIGH HARRISON – Leigh played a solitary game for DLS in 2000 while still at school and was rookied to the Western Bulldogs in 2001. After several years playing in the VFL, he returned in 2003 and was part of DLS’s last Senior Premiership. Leigh was joint Senior B&F in 2005 and runner up in 2007. After a few years playing in the country, Leigh returned to DLS this season and has played a significant part in the team’s resurgence.

Congratulations to Monash Blues’ MARTY PHILLIPS – Marty notched up his 150th game in the Premier Thirds Preliminary Final. Marty has been a Reserves doyen over many years. Reliable as a pacey backman or pinch-hitting crumbing forward, Marty is the recipient of many a Coaches Awards, recently taking over the duties as Club Secretary. Marty is a club legend, and neither a hiatus to Canada nor his recent lack of proximity to the club has dwelled his enthusiasm.

Congratulations to Old Camberwell’s DANIEL DE SANCTIS – "Electric Didda" has been a pivotal member of the Senior squad for many years, and after some time off has made influential comebacks to help the club on a number of occasions. A member of the 2000's Team of the Decade and Team of the Century, and a key to the 2007 Senior Premiership, this High-Flying-Hercules is regarded one of the club's greatest of all time!

Congratulations to Emmaus St Leos's JON O'CONNOR – Jon started at the club as a smiley baby faced boy in 2001 and after a couple of years decided he would try the round ball game. He resumed in 2011, coming second in the Reserves B&F and peer award, and being promoted to the Seniors as a fantastic running ruckman. Chooka is currently Vice President at the Animal Cage and has introduced chocolate biscuits as the mainstay of the Animal’s diet. Terrific work Chooka.

Congratulations to Monash Blues’ DANIEL BROGDEN – Last Saturday Daniel played his 100th game for Monash Blues. A true ‘play anywhere’ utility, Broggo’s team mates love to take the field with him, knowing he will always crack-in chin first at the footy, beat his opponent and protect his mates. Congratulations, Broggo your 100th game is well deserved.

Congratulations to SKOBs MICHAEL TURNBULL – Michael will play his 50th game in the Premier B Reserves Second Semi-Final. He started at SKOB in 2012, won the Coach’s Award in 2013 and was promoted to the Seniors in 2014 when still an U19 player. He is a brilliant young, attacking defender.

Congratulations to Old Haileyburians' JOSH DAWSON – Josh's rapid development has seen him develop into a large, mobile midfielder who loves a contest, and his influence on the team is reflected in his appointment to the leadership group this year. Dawso will have a big role to play over the next few weeks as the Bloods look to go deep into the finals.

KEW FIND LOVE IN THE NICK OF TIME What a cracking fortnight it will be in Division 1 after the weekend’s events. Neutral observers were letting me know how much they enjoyed the contest between Kew and Ormond on Saturday over the weekend, and as a participant in the game, I couldn’t help but agree. It was full bore from go to woe, and it is safe to suggest that a fierce rivalry, that already had flames from yesteryear, is burning strong. Kew pulled off a sensational upset over the raging flag favourites, and with that comes the twist of something pretty special. Old Geelong now has a chance to usurp the anointed one in the preliminary final. They comfortably beat St Mary’s Salesian, who will go back to the drawing board in order to rebuild for 2016 and beyond. They’ll no doubt be a threat once again next season. It is also important to acknowledge the ongoing support of staff, players, family, friends and amateur football supporters in general as both games received strong support despite the horrible weather conditions.

SECOND SEMI FINAL REVIEW Ormond’s Reserves came away with a strong 30-point win over Kew in the curtain raiser at Sportscover Arena, in a result that the Ormond faithful would have hoped would be a premonition for the day’s events. For Kew, a spot in Premier C appeared unlikely leading into the game, with two of their key forwards missing and Sam Bishop taking the reins as head coach in the absence of Ian Aitken. However, at the end of a brutal, hard first quarter, only a solitary point separated the sides. Mal Michael was dangerous in the ruck, feeding Mason and the Simons, but equally from Kew’s perspective, the energy of ‘Sprinkler’ Delbridge, Margaritas (who set the tone with a bone crunching tackle) and Jones was impressive. It was a seesawing battle from there. Ormond’s Lucas Hemming went down with a knee injury and Kew’s Michael Henderson was left groggy after an incidental hit. Simon Keleher was mopping up behind play for Ormond, but the continued forward thrusts from Kew inevitably led to scoring 16

@balmey21 opportunities, including an outstanding snap goal from young gun Jett Guerin. At half time, Kew had taken an 8-point lead. One of the most intriguing battles on the ground was played out in the ruck as Paul Brough went up against a combination of Michael, Haysom and Martinov. It was one of the orchestrators of the momentum swings, as the third quarter saw Kew kick the first two goals before Ormond stormed back into contention on the back of two crucial Isaiah Tahana goals and some valuable run from Nick Edwards before three quarter time. At this stage, the margin had been reduced to 3 points in favour of Kew. The run of Kew, which seemed to have stopped in the last ten minutes of the third term, returned in spades with Darcy Spencer, Zac Jones and Kyle Margaritas pushing the ball forward to the dangerous Andrew ‘DONK’ Doxey, Pete Couvalias and the irrepressible Jett Guerin. Kew converted four goals to Ormond’s nil, pushing the margin out to 27 points by the final siren. Perhaps the man with the biggest grin on the ground at the end of the contest was injured leading goalkicker Andrew Brazzale, closely followed by Ian Aitken. Kew secured their third straight promotion, and reenters the Premier Sections for the first time since 1995. They’ll have to combat a hungry Ormond or the menacing Old Geelong to win their third straight premiership though.

FIRST SEMI FINAL REVIEW It wasn’t quite the inspired First Semi Final fixture that we all hoped for, as Old Geelong scuttled the unlikely hopes of St Mary’s Salesian reaching Premier C. From the outset, Old Geelong dominated proceedings, kicking 5.1 to 0.1 in the first stanza. Their frenzied attack in the middle, starting with Youngman who kicked 2 goals, along with big, bustling Sandon James. From that point on, St Mary’s Salesian was playing catch up and although they didn’t fall too far off the pace, they couldn’t manage to win a quarter, losing the game by 42 points. It was an impressive feat from Old Geelong, who lost to the Saints the week before in the final round of the H&A season. I guess once again, it shows that games in the latter part of the H&A rounds have to be taken with a grain of salt when ladder positions are practically solidified. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

Old Geelong seemed to manage the wet conditions better than St Mary’s Salesian, who couldn’t find targets up forward on a consistent basis. Sandon James was the surprise packet for Old Geelong. ‘Sando’, who is usually overshadowed by key forward counterparts Jack McMeel and Callum Wood, played a huge part of Old Geelong’s comprehensive victory. He has been a tough matchup for most sides throughout the year, as his burly frame and strong hands make him a dangerous proposition. Another man who has had a fine season, and furthered his reputation with a strong September performance was Brad Gore out of the midfield. He was well assisted by youngster Charles ‘Neil’ Youngman and Jordy O’Brien. For St Mary’s Salesian, Gary Puruntatameri kicked 3 to finish an excellent season and James Rogers finished his career with a workmanlike performance in the ruck and up forward. WAYNE WEIDEMANN’S PRELIMINARY FINAL PREVIEW Holy Mama! Here we are. Preliminary Final weekend. And what a feast we have on offer for a Saturday afternoon at Waverley Oval. Ormond and Old Geelong will fight it out for promotion and a spot in the Grand Final against Kew. Throughout the year, Ormond has taken the chocolates both times in their encounters. The first time, they emerged 12-point winners at the Como and they smashed the Oggers by 57 points at E. E. Gunn. However, as we all know, prelims bring surprises. In saying that, Old Geelong will have to bring their absolute best to knock off a solid unit. No brainer of the week: the best two sides usually meet in the Grand Final, and with players like Chisholm, Oaten and Coghlan looking to bounce back from their semi final performances, Wayne and I think they’ll set up a rematch with Kew in two weeks time. In the reserves, I expect Kew to make it an OrmondKew double in the Grand Final. Ormond by 8 points.

RAIDERS SHOCK BLUES AND HAVE JOCS PEGGED IN FINAL Old Paradians staged a stunning last quarter comeback to upstage the more fancied Northern Blues by 20-points at Highgate Reserve. The Raiders stormed to victory with a five-goals-tonil final term that launched them into this week’s preliminary final. The win elevates the Raiders’ premiership chances as the club is now just one win away from Div 1 promotion and two away from ultimate glory. The Blues went into the clash with an unblemished VAFA finals record and chasing the elusive premiership three-peat. Parade on the other hand was looking to bury the demons of last year’s swift finals exit and was by no means in top-form. The Raiders fell to the Blues at Garvey Oval last time they met and limped into the finals at the death-knock. The OPs have made definite in-roads this year and no longer only rely on the likes of Boundy, Kandilakis and Bellizia to secure victory. The Raiders play a highly contested game style and look to control the pace of the game with a high possession rate. Not an overly quick side, it relies on controlling the ball by foot to not only minimise turnovers but also deny its opposition the ball. This worked to a treat in last week’s semi-final win over Northern. The Blues boast a bevy of young attacking midfielders, led by Damon Marcon and play a ballistic brand of football. Unfortunately for the Blues, they struggled to implement this on the wide expanses of Highgate Reserve. The Raiders turned the encounter into a low-scoring dour affair and then ran over the top of Northern in the last. Parade will enter this week’s prelim final against St John’s brimming with confidence and the knowledge that it beat the JOCs last time they met. Ivanhoe banked first spot in the 2015 grand final and with its promotion into Div 1 in 2016 with a clinical 28-point win over St John’s at the Snakepit. The Hoes have been far and above the best side all year and showed that last Sunday. Both sides share a fierce professional and competitive rivalry 18

that was on show in the first semi-final. Ivanhoe now boasts a 3–0 record over St John’s this season and seems to have their measure. The Hoes have made no bones about the fact that they’ve been preparing for St John’s for some time, and it showed. The JOCs made the early running but unfortunately couldn’t make it count on the scoreboard. Ivanhoe, as it had done in the pair’s previous two encounters took their opportunities when they presented themselves and made the JOCs pay. A five-goals-to-one second term handed Ivanhoe a handy 25-point buffer at the main change, as the JOCs were found wanting. St John’s made definite in-roads in their semi-final loss and their five-goal third term was testament to that, but unfortunately, they leaked goals down back and still had work to do. The JOCs got within a goal of Ivanhoe but it was simply a bridge too far. Ivanhoe’s system and structure won out, and hold them in great stead to achieve premiership glory. St John’s will be heartened by its effort but again the coaching staff will no doubt be lamenting missed opportunities which I’m sure will be ironed out during the week in anticipation for a cracking clash with Old Paradians. This week’s prelim final between St John’s and Old Paradians is dripping with intrigue, as the Raiders seem in top-form and the JOCs licking their wounds after last week’s loss. Both sides boast contrasting styles, with St John’s preferring a fast-paced, ballistic game, and the Raiders will be looking for a dogfight. In their most recent encounter, the JOCs struggled to combat the Raiders defensive structures and also failed to spread from congestion with system and purpose. The Raiders didn’t allow St Johns’ midfielders time and space and simply controlled the ball and capitalised on their inside-50s. The template is there for the Raiders; they now must DIVISION 2 — TIPS IN BOLD

simply replicate it. Victory for St John’s starts and finishes at the coalface. If their midfielders can win the ball in the clinches and exit the stoppages with speed then they’ll give their forwards enough one-on-one opportunities. Parade boast a trio of match-winners forward of centre, in Dave Boundy, James Kandilakis and Michael Bellizia with all three having differing strengths that make them difficult match-ups. As a defensive unit, St John’s back-line battled manfully against Ivanhoe last week and will be looking to their wingers and midfielders for support. If the JOCs’ midfielders and half-forwards can be manic with their pressure and create turnovers, that will allow their backline to intercept and create attacking chains of possession. A case can be made for both

sides. It comes down to who gets their game up and going early and who can sustain their own whilst absorbing the opposition’s pressure.

FOUR TO THE FLOOR With the first week of finals now over, the three games that were played had a little bit of everything. Some one-sided affairs and an upset. What we’ve learned is that you need to bring your “A” game and only the strong will survive. Emmaus St. Leo’s didn’t skip a beat, Hawthorn are 8 on the trot, the Magpies still have goal-kicking issues and Aquinas, who could go out in straight sets, are looking very vulnerable. To the games:

HAWTHORN DEFEATED AQUINAS Hawthorn and Aquinas had to travel out to Casey Fields for the battle between 3rd and 4th. Hawthorn came out of the blocks fired up and could have buried them early, however they missed opportunities in front of goal with a strong breeze behind them. Aquinas took their opportunities in the second and kicked some good goals in the term when they had the wind to draw level at half time. The Hawks controlled the ball well in the third and really got on top of them through Jesse “Big Show” Lehmann and Jesse “Little Show” Kenneally. Aquinas was very focused on man of the match, Sam Gold and Dave Pritchard. This allowed Tom Bowler and our other midfielders to run riot. Patrick O’Leary and Alex Guthrie were best for the Bloods. Stephen Tibb and Sam Williams top scored with 2 goals apiece. Jason Ince was the only multiple goal kicker with 2 goals. The loss for Aquinas now has them up against Emmaus St. Leo’s next week, which is not what both of them would have wanted. EMMAUS ST. LEO’S DEFEATED UHS-VU I checked out Emmaus St. Leo’s and UHS-VU at Scammell Reserve in Oakleigh on Sunday. A cold but sunny day was perfect for the players. The Animals asserted their authority early but were inaccurate in front of goal, kicking 6 goals 8 to 1 goal 2. The Vultures were still upbeat at quarter time, understanding what they were doing wrong and it was clear they still had the belief. The 2nd quarter was a tighter affair but the Animals extended their lead by a further 3 goals to a 54 point margin. Wayward kicking 20

@gavsouthern and errors trying to link up cost them a bigger lead as they broke down on a number of occasions. The third was a similarly tight affair but the last quarter was a shoot out, 10 goals to 7 with the Animals taking out an 89-point victory. Anthony Ballard was controlling the backline, Johnathan O’Connor winning the taps and Alex “Doogs” McDougall was creating early. Ryan Harding finished with 6 goals but, it was the high marking of Chris Beluszar (4 goals) who looked more dangerous. For the Vultures, John Clark (3 goals) seemed to be everywhere, Kane Benstead had 2 goals and Sam McSweeney battled manfully down back. Man of the match honours was given to Callum Hogan. Not a bad hit-out for the Animals who have one hand on the cup.

WEST BRUNSWICK DEFEATED SWINBURNE UNI West Brunswick and Swinburne University both made the trek north to Garvey Oval, Bundoora for 2nd Vs. 5th. After an arm-wrestle in the first 8 minutes or so, it was the Razorbacks who hit the scoreboard first and were looking sharp early. The Magpies have been struggling in front of goals throughout the year and their woes continued, kicking the next 3 goals 9 before the Razorbacks next point. The third quarter again was tough going for both teams. The Razorbacks snapped 2 quick goals to reduce the margin to 9 but, with about 4-5 minutes left, the Magpies put on 2 goals to maintain the 20-point buffer, which really took the wind out of Swinburne’s sails. Going into the last, neither side could get going until 10 minutes to go, where the Magpies were able to snag 4 goals 2 and run out the match 54 point victors. Dylan Muscat again topped all scorers with 4 goals and James Simpson was BOG for the Magpies. For the Razorbacks, Michael Daly kicked 2 goals and Marcus Lingham and Ben Higgins were the shining lights. Swinburne University will be looking to reboot over the offseason in order to take the next step. DIVISION 3 — TIPS IN BOLD Emmaus St. Leo's v Aquinas West Brunswick v Hawthorn

PREVIEW With Hawthorn throwing a spanner in the works, the Semi finals will be two absolute crackers. It really is anybody’s game. Emmaus St. Leo’s Vs. Aquinas - The Animals are a potent line-up. Ryan Harding came off early, aggravating a groin last week but should be right to play. With or without him, their forward line is without doubt their strength. We haven’t seen Ben Nucifora since June and Nick MorrisonStory has also been out the last 2 weeks. The Bloods will need a complete performance to pull this off and I don’t think they will. Emmaus St. Leo’s. West Brunswick Vs. Hawthorn - People mention the Div 4 Grand Final replay but the Magpies and Hawks are bona-fide division 3 sides now. They faced off in the opening round and both are have vastly improved since then. There is a strong rivalry between these two and both have an incredible knowledge of the other’s game. Hawthorn is the form team in the competition, however the Magpies still boast the best defence. Goalkicking is the key as both struggled in that department last week. This will be an incredible game of footy, so get down to Meade Reserve on Sunday afternoon. West Brunswick

JACK SPEAKS, FINALS LISTEN In the dying minutes of the 2008 AFL Grand Final, Rex Hunt coined the phrase “You can win 40 of 44 games, but it means Jack Shizenhausen if you can’t win the final game in September.” He was of course, talking about Geelong’s spectacular choke at the hands of Hawthorn. After being the most dominant side of the modern era, and the clear favourite to win the 2008 premiership, they faltered at the final hurdle, their name etched in the history of the AFL as mere runners up. Despite boasting an incredible record of 21 wins and one loss and at the time being one of the shortest favourites to salute on the final Saturday in September, their efforts amounted to nothing and let’s face it, no one really cares about who came second. This past weekend, in arguably the most bizarre weekend of finals football since the inception of the VAFA, we had not one, but two remarkable upsets from both the competition favourites, one of which holds devastating consequences for the club in question. The first vs sixth clash is traditionally a mere formality. The five rungs on the ladder that separate the two sides represents an enormous difference, in this instance, it was seven wins and an 80-point hiding the last time the sides met. However, if the game was supposed to be just a formality, no one told North Brunswick, the Bulls game firing out of the gates, piling on 9 of the first 11 goals of the match, sinking the minor premiers in the process. And while Canterbury were always going to bite back, North Brunswick had the composure, and the stock, to ensure their early hard work would not go to waste. Ben Gallagher was huge again (figurative and literally) kicking goals when they mattered and Peter Butler was up this his usual lofty standards. For Canterbury it was Dylan Wissell on return from a brief hiatus, Lachie Chapman and Scott Fitzgerald who impressed.

@Richie_Humm The news of the Cobras loss would send shockwaves through the Division Four community, not only did it instantly make every other game an elimination final, but it also put Old Westbourne firmly in the firing line to squander a 16-2 H&A season if they were to go down to the inform Parkside squad. Both Point Cook and Box Hill will be forgiven for thinking they had pretty much a free whack in the first week of finals. Canterbury couldn’t lose to North Brunswick, and Westbourne were going to make incredibly light work of Parkside. The winner of the clash would go on to play Westbourne, the loser Canterbury. So you can imagine the panic at Garvey Oval when word started to filter through that Canterbury were down by 50 points. Their free ride to the second week of the finals cruelly stripped from them, now, only the winner would progress. After a close battle in round 17, this game promised to deliver the goods, and we weren’t disappointed. The two sides exchanged blows, until the unassuming Box Hill, like they have on so many occasions before, got their nose in front and took the chocolates. Adrian Piccioli was devastating for Box Hill and Micky Tilley chimed in when it mattered. Like the Box Hill and Point Cook clash, Westbourne had the weight of the world loaded on their oft-tattooed shoulders on news of Canterbury selfishly taking the honour of the highest placed loser. The burden took its toll, as the usually well drilled, skilled and ruthless Westbourne failed to show up. When Westbourne all but negated Parkside’s lead at the final change, every man and his dog thought it would be curtains for the VAFA’s newly reinstated love child. They had been gallant all day, but surely they couldn’t continue to stay with the dominant Westbourne for any longer. But Westbourne never came, Parkside pulling away in DIVISION 4 — TIPS IN BOLD  (YEARS TOTAL 50/83%) Parkside v North Brunswick Box Hill North v Canterbury

the final quarter, condemning Old Westbourne to another season in Division Four and a headache that will linger for many moons to come. After 18 rounds and one spectacular week of finals, four sides remain, two of which couldn’t have possibly dreamt of promotion at any stage this year. But like Rex Hunt said in 2008, if you can’t win the games that matter, it all means ‘Jack Shizenhausen’. The Division Four faithful head North this week for the preliminary final matchups. On Saturday it’s to the incredible facilities at Highgate Reserve in Craigieburn for the Parkside vs North Brunswick clash, while on Sunday it’s out to Garvey Oval in Bundoora. On Saturday I’m tipping Parkside to get the job done in a close one. The tag team of McLaren and Potter will be too much for the Bulls to overcome. In the Sunday game, I’m tipping Canterbury to bring an end to an incredible Box Hill North season. While the minor premiers have stumbled in the past fortnight, they are too strong to stay down for any longer.

CLUB WAREHOUSE RISING STAR 2015 CHRISTOPHER HUGHES – ST BERNARD’S Congratulations to Christopher Hughes of St Bernard’s who is this week’s Rising Star nomination. Chris’ standout performance against Old Carey in Round 18 was a well-deserved reward for his efforts this year. Chris was one of ten U19 players invited to complete a full senior pre season with the senior squad further developing his running capacity contested work. Since his first senior game in round 1, Christ hasn’t missed a beat becoming a part of St Bernard’s strong midfield and wing rotations. Gathering hard ball and producing outside run, Chris shares similar traits to Richmond gun midfielder Trent Cotchin with his silky skills and high possession counts. Chris has played all his junior football at St Bernard’s, progressing through their Football Academy program the past 3 years. Last Saturday, was Chris’ most impressive performance. With 2 senior on-ballers not playing for St Bernard’s, Chris played as a first string midfielder against a quality Old Carey on-ball brigade and was clearly one of the best players on the day.

* to be eligible for the club Warehouse Rising Star, a player must be born no earlier than 1994 and playing his first full season of senior football.

RETROSPECTIVE

Geoff Reilley

@GeoffreyReilley

5 YEARS AGO – 2010 The Premier A Section semi final between De La Salle and University Blues saw the Blues in some trouble early. Key backman, Al Austin, limped from the ground however the Blues led at quarter time 4.5 to 3.3. Del La had taken the lead by 10 points by half time and the Blues again appeared to be struggling. De La took control in the third term and was 6 goals up at three quarter time and won the game by just under 10 goals. They had no less than fourteen goal scorers. Best – Roberts, Collins, Harrison, Pickett (4), Moore, Lowe (DLS) and Butko, Smith, McConnell, Clark, Paterson, Monteith (UB). Old Melburnians easily defeated Old Xaverians in the reserves 17.7 to 7.7. In the Premier B semi final, Uni Blacks never allowed Old Ivanhoe to lead at any stage of the game and won comfortably 13.14 to 9.11 with the Blacks Charlie Richardson the star with 4 goals. Best – Richardson, O’Hara, Weekley, DuBois, Batten, Guthrie (Uni Blacks) and Low, Tremellan, Gieschen, Frangiacomo, Weston, Gellings (Old Ivanhoe). It was Semi Final 2 in Premier C Section and Caulfield Grammarians faced up to their old foes, Beaumaris. In a high standard game, Caulfield led by 4 points at the first break, 10 points at half time, 21 points at three quarter time and 24 points at the final siren. Best – Stewart, Winter, Widjaja, Perkins, Nelson, Scheetz (Caulf) and Dean (3), Coote, Ensor, McNicholas (3), Langdon, Murton (Beau). Semi Final 1 saw AJAX put Old Camberwell to the sword 15.17 to 6.5 and were untroubled after quarter time. Best – Steinberg, Weislitzer, Routman (3), Measey, Blieden, Marks (AJAX) and Hart, Bennett, Clarke, Hillier (3), Le Cerf, Tolson (Old Camb). The final five for the Club Warehouse Rising Star Award were announced – Tim Allan (Ormond), Tom Campbell (Old Scotch), Daniel Nicholson (Uni Blues), Daniel Noonan (Old Xavs) and Callum Pohl (Old Trinity). Six VAFA players had been chosen to tour South Africa later in the month as part of the Australian Football council team. Jack Watts (Uni Blues), Trent Zimbachs (Collegians), Grant Baldwin (Old Carey), Ryan Semmel (Hampton Rovers), Paul Florance (Bulleen Templestowe) and Jack Hellier (St Bedes Mentone Tigers.) 42

10 YEARS AGO – 2005 It was semi final weekend in A Section and Uni Blues (2nd) handed out a hiding to top team Old Haileybury in the second semi final. The Blues got away early in the game and led at every change and at three quarter time the lead was 10 goals plus. The Blues displayed exceptionally clean handball, use the spacious EPark cleverly and would start clear favourites in the Grand Final in two weeks time. There were many good players for the winners but they named their best six – North, Lowcock, Scambler (5), Gleeson, Wilkie, Solly and for Haileybury the best were Seccull, Walden, Trollope, Armstrong, O’Donnell, Ford. Tim Sutcliffe and Peter James for the field umpires. The final score in favour of the Blues, 23.13 to 12.8. The first semi final was very interesting as Old Scotch looked like defeating Old Xavs in a final after such a long time but in a sensational last quarter, the Xavs kicked 9.8 to 0.1 to earn the right to challenge Old Haileybury in the prelim. Best – McDonald, Oswald, Lethlean, Arnold, Beetham, Chatfield (OX) and Kitchen, Ashton, Beranger, Lorenzini, B Philips, Nettleton (Scotch). De La Salle stormed into the B Section Grand final by overcoming an inaccurate Old Ivanhoe 16.11 to 11.24. The ‘Hoers’ went 13 points up in the last quarter at one stage but De L kicked the last 5 goals in a dominant passage of play. Best – Duggan, Lowe, Shields, Brown (3), L Harrison (3), Mannix (DLS). Old Brighton was too good for Old Essendon in the 1st semi final with a 16.19 to 8.9 victory. Best – Perrett, Kent, MacGillivray (4), Ewart, S Ginnivan, Crilly (Old Brighton) and DeMorton, Fewster, Kavanagh, Flaherty, Leask, Portia (Old Essendon). 20 Years Ago – 1995 St Kevins won the A Section first semi Final easily from Uni Blues 13.10 to 8.18. No doubt the Blues’ poor conversion did not help their cause but SKOBS deserved their victory. St Bernards had the better of the Old Xaverians in the second semi final, 19.10 to 15.12 and maybe the super run by the Old Xavs was over? The following week’s contest with SKOBS would be a great game given their respective rivalries, after all, the Xavs were aiming at winning six consecutive flags. North Old Boys 17.14 defeated De La Salle 7.18 in the first semi final. Best Booth, Drum, Lock, R Maguire, Sanders, Curry (NOBS) and Swift, Evans, Mannix, Vavello, Thomas, Goodier (DLS). THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

Old Brighton confirmed their favouritism for the B Section flag with a 17.12 to 12.13 victory over Mazenod. Although Brighton slowed down somewhat in the final quarter, theirs was an impressive performance. Best – Bradley (8), Lennox, Dennis, Jackson, Ewart, Williams (OB) and Ryan, O’Donoghue, M Murray, Kavanagh (3), Tucker, McIntyre (Maz). One of the most respected umpires, Mark Gibson, was awarded the inaugural “Umpire of the Year”. Best & Fairest winners were Glenn Cox (Marcellin) A Section, Rob Bonnici (De La Salle) B Section, Stephen Anderson (Hampton Rovers) C Section, Andy Cultrera (Aquinas) D1 Section, Andrew Campbell (Salesian) D2 Section, Darren Williams (Williamstown CYMS) D3 and David Martin (Bentleigh) D4.

40 YEARS AGO – 1975 Geelong (A Section) was the only team in the Association to go through the season without a win. Heatherton (F Section) had the best record of wins (17). Top goal kickers for the season were A Section – Thompson (St Bernards) 80, B Section – Hughes (Ivanhoe) 88, C Section – Calleja (St Kilda CBC) 62, D Section – Combe (Hampton Rovers) 71, E Section – Dancer (ANZ Bank) 70 and F Section – Meeking (Heatherton) 114.

the A Section medal. This was ‘Jock’s’ fifth best and fairest award having won the award in B Section in 1959 and 1961 and C Section in 1960. He polled 4 x 1st votes, 2 x 2nd and 2 x 3rd for a total of 18 votes, winning by 1 vote from Uni Blacks’ follower, Roger Shackleton and Uni Blues half back, Phil Rhoden both tied for second. Ray Wilson, captain of Uni Blacks was third. Jock Nelson was a star ruckman and had given wonderful service to the VAFA having played close to 200 games for MHSOB. He was a member of the Victorian team from 1958 to 1964, being captain in 1962, 63 and 64. He was also selected in the Australian Amateur teams of 1958, 1960 and 1962 and was captain of the Australian Amateur team in 1962. Only 28, Jocka looked certain to play on for several more seasons. Jock remains an ardent follower of amateur football and has contributed significantly off-field as a member of the tribunal for many years. The medal for the best player in the Premier A Section Grand Final, the Jock Nelson Medal, is awarded annually and presented by Jock to the winner during the presentation ceremony. Geoff Ward (Caulfield Grammarians) won the B Section award from B Conway (De La Salle) second and Neil McColl (Geelong) third. Les Thompson (West Brunswick) won the award in C Section, A H Poolman (Old Geelong) in D Section, K A Wood (Old Camberwell) in E Section and B S Jeeves (Old Ivanhoe) in F Section. Coburg defeated Old Paradians in the A Section 1st semi final. Best – Scanlon, P Calleson, Hempseed, Lawson, Corrigan, Condron (Coburg) and Silvester, Parker, T Booth, Quinlan, Proctor, Boyle (OP). Ormond defeated Ivanhoe in the B Section 1st semi final. Best – Fitzroy, Blight, Davidson, Finlayson, Graham, Craig (Ormond) and Burt, Logan, Linley, Grylewicz, Blackwood, Whitaker (Ivanhoe). St Kevins Old Boys defeated Monash Uni Blues in the C Section 1st semi final. Best – Semetas, Davidson, D Martin (5), Harvey, D Davies (3), Burnside (StK) and Farley, Longney (5), Rattray, Evans, J White, Nixon (Monash).

50 YEARS AGO – 1965 It was finals’ time in all sections and the VAFA best and fairest awards had been determined. For the second successive season, John ‘Jocka’ Nelson, Melbourne High School Old Boys Captain, won

60 YEARS AGO - 1955 In A Section Old Melburnians won the first semi final 9.4 to Uni Blacks 4.11. Apart from the first term, the OM’s held sway and increased their leads at each break.

30 YEARS AGO – 1985 Brian Goodman and Peter Wiseman were the field umpires in the A Section 1st semi final at Elsternwick Park between North Old boys and De La Salle. It was a special day for ‘Benny’ in his 300th game as a field umpire and following his playing career of 106 games for Brunswick Amateurs. This was Benny’s 21st season in amateur football. The game was won by De La Salle 11.17 to 5.7. In the second semi final, Ormond easily accounted for Collegians by 43 points. Ormond started slowly but they set up the win with an 8 goal second quarter; final score 17.13 to 10.12. Elsternwick’s season ended in E Section when Heatherton won the preliminary final 21.13 to 13.10. Best – T Howell, Ulbrick, Patterson (7), Rooney, M Easy, Quanchi (Heatherton) and Farrelly, Evangelista, Farrington (4), Hill, Bean, Thompson (Elsternwick).

FIRST ROUND OF FINALS LIVED UP TO THE HYPE 18 rounds of footy down and the best 4 teams were left standing. De La Salle’s ground Waverley Oval hosted both games on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and first up was Beaumaris and St.Kevins. St.Kevins had been in good form recently, beating St.Bernards late in the season and showing that they could potentially be a threat in the finals. Beaumaris had other ideas, proving they are sleeping giants of the 2015 season as they entered the scrap, went about their business without flash and fancy things and took the points relatively comfortably. Nothing separated the two sides at quarter time and it was set up for a cracking contest. The game opened up a bit more in the second term, with the Sharks slotting 2 goals to none, but it could have been so much more as they kicked 2.8 for the quarter. There inaccuracy luckily didn’t come back to haunt them as they booted 6 goals to 4 in the 3rd term to swing the match in their favour. Kelly was good for the Sharks kicking 3 goals and Zagni was at his damaging best booting 2, McLaren and Gregory were the standouts for the Sharks on the day. For St.Kevins, Wallis booted 3 and Kerr 2 while Slevison showed plenty in the demoralising loss. Beaumaris now set up a Preliminary Finals berth against the Old Xaverians, who went down in a tight one in their clash with traditional rivals St.Bernards. St.Bernards and the Old Xavs renewed hostilities in the second match of the double header at Waverley Oval on Sunday. 1 Vs 2, the two best sides of the whole year. Xavs beat Bernards once, and Bernards returned the favour later in the season. Not much separated them and it was set up for a mouth-watering contest and the game lived up to all the hype. The Old Xaverians jumped out of the blocks very quickly, leading 5 goals to 1 at quarter time, which had people thinking the Old Xavs might be one step closer to that elusive premiership they have been so close to in previous years. As they led by 29 points at the half, the Old Xavs looked to have one foot in this year’s decider. There was still 44

one more twist in this game though, because no one told St.Bernards the game was over, and they fought back and outgunned the Xavs to level the scores at half time. The Old Xavs had seemingly run out of legs, however they were still fighting right to the end, kicking two goals in the final term. The issue was they allowed three past their defences as they ultimately were nine point losers and now, courtesy of their second chance, will play the dark horse Beaumaris in a do or die battle next Sunday. A poor finish to the game for the Old Xavs with their fitness coming into question late in the game. However, there were still plenty of positives from both sides with Wynne kicking 5 for the Old Xavs and Ongarato and Vander Haar putting in very solid performances. The usual suspects bobbed up again for the Snowdogs with Sibbald showing his class up forward kicking 4 goals while my tip for league B ‘n F Tom Delzoppo was at his very best, destroying the Old Xavs all over the ground.

PRELIMINARY FINAL PREVIEW There is plenty to work on for the Old Xaverians this week as their ability to run out the game was questioned and will be a focus going into the Preliminary final, and coach Callinan will no doubt be ruthless on the track and at selection this week. I expect them to bounce back and beat Beaumaris, who are in excellent form and will be no easy beat for the VAFA giant. If they do that, I would expect them to put in a better showing against St. Bernards in the big one. It will be a hard fought contest and Beauy will not go away easily, however I have a feeling that the class of the Old Xavs will win out in the end. Xavs by 13pts Old Xaverians v Beaumaris

SECTION TWO SF TWO — Parkdale Vultures v Old Brighton Parkdale dug in and ground out a 20-point win against a red hot Old Brighton squad on Saturday. In miserable conditions the Tonners burst out of the blocks kicking four goals to one in the first stanza on the back of some bullish work around the stoppages by the inspirational Jack Cowling. Parkdale managed to wrestle the momentum back their way after quarter time, and drew two points ahead at half time. Jack Vorbach was everywhere and was a catalyst in the comeback, as Dhanesh Jayaselan proved the match winner with five important majors. Old Brighton will be kicking themselves as they had the same number of scoring shots, yet failed to convert some gettable chances, especially in the second quarter when they had their foot on the throat of Parkdale. Looking ahead to next week, Old Brighton will head into their clash against Caulfield warm favourites. SF ONE — Fitzroy v Caulfield Grammar Caulfield Grammar fought nail and tooth to break Fitzroy hearts on Saturday, claiming a thrilling one point victory over the Lions. The Roys were brave in defeat, coming from 37-points down at quarter time to almost pinch victory in a blistering final quarter run. Their shooting for goal ultimately decided the game, their 14 behinds proving costly as the siren sounded and hands went to heads. Lachlan Topp started strongly and was a major factor in Caulfield’s early surge, finishing on three majors for the match. James Bluer was best for the Lions as Daniel O’Connor kicked two majors in the defeat. Looking ahead for Caulfield, they face a Old Brighton side on the rebound who will be fired up and looking to force a rematch against Parkdale in the grand final.

SECTION THREE SF TWO - Old Geelong v Williamstown CYMS Old Geelong proved their doubters (including myself ) wrong on Saturday with a comfortable 55-point win against Williamstown CYMS. The OGS lead at every change and their nine goal kickers was a pleasing aspect of the team win. Jock Grimshaw picked up where he left off in the regular season with another five goal haul, whilst Sanchala Weerawardena was best afield in the win. Mitchell Parkinson tried hard for Willy, kicking four majors, but supply was limited as Old Geelong stepped up a gear to secure a grand final berth in two weeks. SF ONE – Old Carey v Ormond Old Carey outlasted a gritty Ormond side on Saturday, taking out a 9 point win in a classic at Carey Sport Complex. The Monders stayed with Old Carey all day and were right in it up until the final siren. Karsten Rodenberg was brilliant for the Panthers in the win, as was Daniel Clarke. Nick Oaten was brave in defeat for Ormond. It was a wonderful effort by Ormond to make finals and they certainly gave Old Carey a run for their money. Looking ahead to next week, Old Carey now take on Williamstown in the preliminary final in what promises to be a beaut of a contest. Preliminary Final Prediction Williamstown to defeat Old Carey by 12 points

Preliminary Final Prediction Old Brighton to defeat Caulfield Grammar by 42 Points

TIGHT LOW SCORING BATTLES IN SEMIS Ivanhoe is through to the grand final after outlasting UHS-VU/Flemington in an enthralling contest at Ivanhoe Park. UHS-VU led by 1 point at quarter time, 9 points at half time and then didn’t score in the third quarter. Ivanhoe’s defence stood firm in the second half, as led by Samuel Aanensen (2 goals), they kicked 4 goals 9 points to UHS-VU 2 points after half time to emerge 22 point winners. Aanensen and Liam Steve were best on for Ivanhoe, while Myles Legudi was solid for UHS-VU, as he has been all season. Ivanhoe now has the week off as they await the winner of UHS-VU and La Trobe. UHS-VU/Flemington would be rueing their ineffective second half performance and will be looking to bounce back strongly. La Trobe has knocked out St Bernards to progress through to the preliminary final. In this do or die clash, St Bernards jumped out of the blocks before La Trobe reeled them in after half time. Leading by 15 points at the main break, St Bernards could only manage 2 solitary points in

the third quarter as La Trobe, led by Patrick Carroll (4 goals) and Liam Guy (2 goals) kicked away in the second half to win by 15 points. Ryan Timmins was played well for La Trobe, while Nathaniel Doody tried hard for St Bernards but couldn’t get his side over the line. VAFA COLTS — TIPS IN BOLD UHS-VU v La Trobe

U19 SECTION 4

U19 SEC 4: FAVOURITES THROUGH There were no surprises in week 1 of the finals, with the higher ranked teams all winning comfortably. Peninsula got the jump on Beaumaris, with a 12 goal to 4 first half. Oscar Whitty was on fire with 7 goals, with Bryce Mclean racking up plenty of touches. The carnage continued in the second half, Peninsula eventually running out winners by 70 points. It was much closer in the 1v5 game, with Mazenod surviving a last quarter fight back from the Monash Blues. Mazenod led by 47 points at three quarter time, thanks to 3 goals each from Jaydyn Hill and Jacob Murdock. Led by William Hogan (4 goals), Monash kicked 7 goals to 2 in

the last but inevitably fell 18 points short. St Kevins easily accounted for Northern Blues, winning 100 to 45. Skevs led from start to finish with strong performances from Jack Cairns (3 goals), Daniel Lattanzio (2 goals) and Lachlan Comito. Damien Delle-Vergini kicked 4 goals out of the 7 total for the Blues. With the top 3 all winning, Northern Blues go through as the highest ranked loser. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

@VAFAUA

WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO? Whilst a count in a game is relatively uncommon, it is important to know the correct procedure. It would seem that Head Coach Tony Hales channelled his inner Yoda and had us run through it prior to the last round Premier rounds and Divisional finals starting. But what would happen if you had a request for a count before the start of the game or a quarter? Would you know what to do? Thankfully Merv Monty was fully across what was required and Merv, Pete Bailes and David Lepair ensured that the correct result occurred. So what is the correct procedure? As a quick reminder let’s look at the steps below: As we all (hopefully) know, only the captain can request a count. If this request comes before the game or quarter has started, we cannot actually have the count. We need to wait until the siren goes and play has started. You can then action the captain’s request. Stop play, and get the players to line up. As a team be vigilant and ensure that no players manage to sneak off the ground. Then count the players, and if an inconsistency is found upon completion, award the free kick to the relevant captain at the top of the goal square. Before the kick is taken you must signal time on, to re-start the game. On a side note, it’s also important that if you were the controlling umpire when the siren went and you had the first ball up, that you remember that you have actually started the game, isn’t that right Dave? THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

EARLY BIRD MACCIONI Field umpire Julian Maccioni arrived at Garvey Oval the usual one hour before game time for his 11.40 final last Saturday, he was greeted by Sean Scully Snr. and Peter ”Tugger” Pullen, Tugger asked him what he was doing there? “I’ve Come to do the 11.40 game,” replied Julian. Just one little detail that Julian failed to read about his appointment, he was doing the Sunday game. Jamie Gunn, being the caring person he is, immediately comforted Julian by posting a “caring” Facebook post. GUEST STARS With the so many live games in the Premier sections at the weekend and the opening round of the start of the Divisional finals, Tony Hales was left with some interesting selection issues. The result was a number of umpires doubling up, with a Premier game on Saturday and a final on Sunday, along with a couple of special guests jumping into Premier B. After spending the year studying and travelling Europe, Sam Levin jumped straight into the crucial Parkdale Vultures v Hampton Rovers clash and didn’t miss a beat. David Anselmi decided that it was a good opportunity to show his kids at the SMJFL that Big Red really can umpire and assisted Shannon Kirkby on her Premier B debut. Thanks for filling in guys, and Daniel Silfo has advised that your subs will be taken out of your pay! 57

UMPIRES CORNER

It’s hard to believe that we’re now fully into the business end of the season with finals now underway for all sections. Hopefully now that we’re all playing finals, the weather gods take pity on us and give us September weather, unlike the arctic blasts and rain we experienced last week.

A THANK YOU WE RAN OUT OF ROOM FOR LAST WEEK Last week we gave a report on the pre-finals dinner, however due to space constraints we were unable to thank a very important person. Without the fine work of Owen Hinson and his AV pieces the night would not be the extravaganza that it is. We know the countless hours (we’re sure you’re counting them), that you put in to really liven up the night, and we’re all sorry that we didn’t fall over enough this year to make the closing sequence even better. If you want to see highlights from the night, as well as Owen’s great work, you can head to our YouTube channel. Simply search YouTube for VAFAUA.
