The Amateur Footballer 2023 - Week 10

Page 1

SEASON 2023 - June 24

Last Saturday I was invited down to Old Ivanhoe Football Club’s game day luncheon ahead of its clash with PEGS to talk about Tackle Your Feelings. The club has participated in the program over the past two years, putting its coaches/committee members and players through the 90-minute workshop delivered by a local psychologist.

I spoke about how community football clubs, particularly in the aftermath of the pandemic have a greater understanding of their responsibility to create an environment that supports the mental health of their people. Not only are clubs prioritising mental health literacy programs like Tackle Your Feelings, but they are also establishing wellbeing committees; appointing a wellbeing coordinator; building a relationship with a psychologist or local health service; and participating in mental health promotion activity, like Tackle Your Feelings round this weekend. For many years amateur clubs have invested in physical health infrastructure through personnel and resources, but they are now investing in their own mental health game plans too.

Before I go on, it’s worth acknowledging this outstanding leadership, especially when considering all the other things that community footy clubs and its volunteers deal with just to get teams onto the park.

In explaining this it led some in the audience to reflect on how mental health was considered when they were playing or coaching, whether that be 10, 20 or even 30 years earlier. Clearly, the awareness of mental health was not what it is today, but the common thread amongst the conversations I had post lunch, and often do in various settings, was that ‘We just didn’t talk about it’.

It is not the first time I’ve heard this reflection and I’ve been thinking about it for some time, specifically, whether conversations about mental health were previously not had or is it that people didn’t know what to listen for or how to interpret them?

As a 36-year-old, my recollections only go back so far. But what led me to ask this question is hearing language used by generations older than me in historical media, whether it be through documentaries on streaming services or in yesteryear footy content. Hearing some of these common phrases through the context of the understanding and awareness of mental health we now have, it’s apparent that mental health may not have been such an overlooked topic we believe it was. Particularly, when you overlay the modern theory of the mental health continuum where everyone sits somewhere between ‘struggling’, ‘coping’ and ‘thriving’, compared with a binary way of thinking.

Common phrases that we all heard growing up that could be used to articulate the mental health continuum include.

Struggling: “down in the dumps”, “had a rough trot”, “in a rut”, “bit off”,

Coping: “it is what it is’, ‘coming good’, “hanging in there”, Thriving: “up and about”.

As a young person playing in the VAFA each weekend, my mates and I didn’t talk directly about “mental health”. However, I distinctly remember then-North Melbourne player Nathan Thompson revealing his depression battle and the reference point this gave us to develop a shared language about the topic.

Stigma is clearly an important part of this equation and sometimes people may hear the message, but they don’t act because they aren’t comfortable or they fear offending someone or making them feel worse. There are definitely other common sayings from years gone by used in relation to mental health which served to drive the topic underground.

One of the learning outcomes Tackle Your Feelings seeks to achieve is to give people the tools to have a conversation about mental health. However, it also provides participants an understanding about what to listen out for and how the other person might be reacting. The beauty of completing the program in the club setting, is that it also leaves behind a shared language for mental health that helps to initiate conversations, as well as assisting to interpret what the other party is saying.

What is the point of all of this? Firstly, you don’t have to be a therapist to be therapeutic when it comes to supporting someone’s mental health. Simply having a conversation is an action to take if you think that someone might be stuck on the continuum or shifting. In fact, 93.7 per cent of people say that a conversation with a friend or family member is helpful. Having the conversation is not just about firing in a few questions, it’s equally important to listen to what the other person has to say because the language they are using may not be from the textbook. In the week leading into my visit to Old Ivanhoe, I heard a 21-yearold footballer talk about mental health as his “mentals”, which reinforces that progress has been made, but also that everyone has their own way, or words, of articulating how they are feeling.

Tune into what they are saying and doing and don’t be afraid to follow up to clarify, because this check in could be the first step to connecting someone with professional support if they need it.

Hey Siri, show me a round of footy that defines your Premiership credentials

This weekend officially marks the second half of the home and away season. The first of the return bouts. With every game having something on the line, which of the William Buck Premier sides can produce “the perfect 10” in Round 10?

In many ways, this is shaping up as a season defining weekend. “Hey Siri, define ‘grudge-match’ : a contest based on personal antipathy between the participants.”

In the RSN Xtra Match of the Day, we’re off to St Kevin’s College where the reigning champions St Kevin’s will do battle with the VAFA’s powerhouse, Old Xaverians

Fourth vs. Fifth on the ladder. A SKOB win puts a two game buffer on the red and black mafia. A win against the odds for Xav’s moves them equal with the title holders.

The contest promises to be so much more than the bottom rungs of the top four. It has “season-defining” written all over it.

In 2019, then football manager Michael Christian told VAFA Media it was no secret this side “wanted to be like Xavier.” Three premierships from four Grand Final appearances has them on a similar trajectory, with no sign of slowing down either.

Dan Hannebery won’t be renewing hostilities against Mitch Wallis this weekend, still out from a broken jaw. This time around, on the back of their strongest performance of the season, the captain Marcus Stavrou is in the side.

Stav has been almost flawless in his three matches since his return.

SKOB got back onto the winners list last weekend in a hard fought battle against Old Scotch, they’re buoyed by 10 selections in the Big V squad, a deserving opportunity for the best side in William Buck Premier over the past 6 years.

St Kevin’s took the honours at the College in 2022, and again in Round 5. Will it be third time lucky for the mafia?

Join us at 1:00 PM for the coverage and the ultimate grudgematch in the VAFA.

“Hey Siri, define ‘momentum’ : the quantity of motion of a moving body/person/thing, measured as a product of its mass and velocity. Up or down”

As the University Blues continue the climb up the ladder, Old Brighton are doing whatever they can to arrest the slide. This momentum can be traced back to their Round 5 battle with Uni Blues playing “out of their skin” to beat the Tonners at Brighton Beach Oval.

An average winning margin of 34.5 points in this run of five, victories against last year’s Grand Finalists and Collegians (currently second). It’s been the clubs best run of form since Rounds 12-17 in 2019, which saw them go onto win the Premiership.

The return of Sam Grimley on the weekend enhanced the strength of Guy Martyn’s forward line. It’s going to be a challenge for the Old Brighton defence, curtailing him and James Paterson who’s found his groove of late. A sixth win a row moves them up another line when it comes to overall Premiership credentials this season.

There’s more boys from Brighton checking into the Melbourne airport departure lounge than probably at training this week. Dan Donati, the master-coach has got to pull more than a rabbit out of the hat now.

Should the run of outs continue, make no mistake about it, a 5-5 scoreline will be a tough mountain to climb back up in the run to September.

“Hey Siri, define ‘redemption’ : the action of regaining or gaining possession of something”

As Old Melburnians trudged off Harry Trott Oval at the end of Round 5 going down by 113 points, and embarrassed, they were ninth on the ladder. No wins, injuries aplenty and a percentage of 56.

A month on, they’ll charge onto Elsternwick Park against Collegians hellbent on redemption. In the last four matches, they’ve had four wins, regained players and have a percentage of 128.

The Lions however, have given the OM’s back-to-back football lessons after their own embarrassment was on show in Round 8 of 2022. The loss stunned them into action, they’re 17-2 in home and away matches since.

Ben Harding is the #1 player in the game for disposals, and clearances. On the weekend, he went beyond the half-century and put it one of the best individual performances in 2023.

He will be challenged in the midfield by King Kenny (averaging 23 disposals) and Sam Hibbins (26 touches). Collegians also don’t want anyone to forget about Viv Michie (25 disposals).

If OM’s prevail in this one, it throws chaos into the top four. It brings them back an even 5-5, and gives them a genuine scalp that will make the competition sit up and take notice.

“Hey Siri, define ‘importance’ : the state or fact of being of great significance or value.”

Don’t underestimate the significance of this season defining contest between Caulfield Grammarians and University Blacks

While all eyes are on the top half of the ladder, and the machinations, formulas and discussion around finals.

At the tailend, the relegation battle is starting to heat up. There’s plenty riding on this game that could go a long way to determining where these sides are in 2024.

Earlier this year it was Uni Blacks who prevailed at Melbourne Uni Oval. If Blacks find similar avenues to goal and a stronghold on the scoreboard, they can push themselves clear of the Fields by two games with two months of the season remaining.

Caulfield, in search of their second win for the year. Should they win, they can potentially find themselves off the bottom of the ladder, and equal with Blacks at 2-8.

Nick Hey and Julian Dobosz traded goals in a shootout last time they met. 10 goals between the power forwards. The same again would be a treat for the footy purists who venture out to Glen Huntly Oval for this contest.

“Hey Siri, define ‘respect’ : a feeling of deep admiration for something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements.”

Old Scotch welcomes Old Haileybury to the Cave this weekend. Daniel Ward spoke to VAFA Media earlier this week on For the Love of the Game heading into this contest “looking to hang in there and get some troops back, we always front up, the work rate and the effort is there.”

“You’re either winning, or you’re learning,” Ward continued. It’s been a significant learning curve for the 2022 B-Section Premiers.

Old Haileybury haven’t died wondering throughout their return to William Buck Premier, they’re out to earn respect of the competition. While the wins haven’t come, opposition sides are certainly weary of the,

Old Scotch are the benchmark in 2023, needing to play the minutes to beat them.

From the outside, the Cardinals on top of the ladder have surprised some people. For those inside the four walls, and the keen followers of the VAFA are not surprised. This team has all the right moves in all the right places.

To date, they’ve gathered the respect of the top sides, challenging them all through the opening nine weeks of the year.

This is equally an important game for Mark Gnatt, just as a top of the table clash would be. Given the evenness of the top sides in the competition, back-to-back losses would see the Cardinals slide from top spot.

A win for Daniel Ward livens up the relegation zone with an additional layer which makes the final eight weeks so very exciting.

Every week we’re thrown new players who stand up, another level to a side that’s in form, or another shock result that throws the competition on its head.

Killer-Diller contests left, right and centre this weekend. The perfect mix of season defining contests. Nothing can predict what will happen this weekend, not even Siri, and that’s what makes this competition worth its weight in gold.

Top Four dominate as teams return fresh off the bye

After a well-deserved week off, Round 9 saw the top four teams in Kew, Old Scotch, St Kevins and Collegians all start the second half of the season with strong cases for a tilt at the premiership.

Kew and Collegians put on the most dominant performance of the four, with Kew beating Melbourne Uni by 13 points and the purple army defeating Fitzroy by 21 points.

Kew were on the back foot for the first three quarters of the game, as Melbourne Uni took a two point lead into the final change. However, Kew’s 2.3 in the last quarter and ability to keep Uni scoreless got them over the line and proved how dangerous they really are when going inside 50.

Jessica Burger’s goal saw her inside the best players, whilst Amelia Dawborn was Kew’s best. Nell Washington was Melbourne Uni’s best, whilst Eve Sheehan and Emma Steel were their goal scorers.

Kew will have a bye next weekend, whilst Melbourne Uni have an evenly matched game against Coburg.

The Purple Army’s strong showing over Fitzroy places them in fourth on the ladder, two games clear of West Brunswick. Collegians were on the front foot for the entire game, keeping Fitzroy to two goals for the entirety of the game. Had their scoring been more accurate, the margin may have been a much bigger deficit.

Robyn Randell kicked both of Fitzroy’s goals to be one of their best, whilst Collegians had five different goal scorers, with Jenna Colwell their best.

Collegians host Grammarians next weekend, whilst Fitzroy will host West Brunswick.

West Brunswick only went down to St Kevins by eight points, and it was a lot more evenly matched than most would have anticipated. SKOB did not have their kicking boots on, with 1.5 for the first half and 2.6 to round out the game. Luckily, it was the same for the Magpies, who kicked four behinds after the first quarter.

Once again, Bree Doyle continued her run of being the best on ground for the season, making a valuable case to be named the MVP of this season. Emily Condon was another in the best, and whilst she hasn’t been named best on ground yet this season, she has not missed being named amongst the best yet and is another player piecing together an impressive season. West Brunswick will play Fitzroy next weekend, whilst St Kevins will host Old Scotch in a top four showdown.

Old Scotch ran out six-point victors on Saturday, however, this was another match where both teams failed to capitalise on opportunities. Scotch did not kick a goal after quarter time, only converting points from half time onwards. It was a similar scenario for the Lions, who were scoreless in the first quarter and only scored behinds after half time as well.

Ringing the Dairy Bell with Pride

As the footy returned from the King’s Birthday Bye, there were questions that needed answering.

Could Fitzroy bounce back quickly after losing to St Bernard’s? Can Old Geelong steady the ship? Will Williamstown CYMS continue on their strong patch of form?

How will De La Salle go, travelling out to Banskia Reserve?

The latter question is the one we’ll endeavour to answer first. The boys of the Dairybell opened round nine in style, holding off a fast-finishing Beaumaris

De La Salle set up the victory in the opening term kicking three goals, keeping the Sharks to just three behinds.

When the finns of the Sharks are up and about, they’ve been prolific scorers, kicking 100+ points in Rounds 2, 4, 6, and 8. De La was able to keep the power forwards of Beauy quiet with the home side managing just three majors in the first three quarters.

An 18-point buffer at the final change was closed to nine points when the final siren sounded. De La made it three wins in a row to keep themselves fourth on the table.

Will McKinnon was named the best player on the ground, supported by Will Mackie and Nathan Scollo (2 goals).

Beaumaris’ big man Callum Heath hit the scoreboard and was amongst the best, two goals from Joel Cusack and Sam Roberts were positives from the day. The Sharks have now gone win, loss, win, loss from their past four matches and third spot on the ladder is looking vulnerable.

Williamstown CYMS awaits in Round 10, a side they got hold of earlier in the year. De La Salle welcomes the ladder leaders St Bernard’s to Waverley Oval, the last time they had success over the Snowdogs was in 2019.

The CY’s are to be commended for the way they’ve turned this season around. After being 0-4 and sitting second last on the table with 49% to their name.

They’ve now won three of their past five matches. The two losses by five points to Old Geelong, and 11 points to De La Salle.

On Saturday, against Ajax the two sides fought out a tough encounter. The Jackers holding a six point lead at the main change saw them fall behind in the third term as Williamstown kicked four goals to open up a 15 point lead, which remained intact during the final term.

Oskar Manton, a handy inclusion for Williamstown. Down from the VFL due to Port Melbourne having the bye, Calvin Vicino, William Smyth and Harrison Miller kicked six goals between them whilst Jack Noonan continued his run of strong form. In his first senior game for the year, Daniel Cohen kicked three goals for Ajax and was named amongst the best. Just the one win for the Jackers so far in 2023, they’ll be aiming to make it two this weekend when they tackle the T’s at the Daley Oval. Williamstown CY’s will continue the battle of the blue and gold when they face Beaumaris at Fearon Reserve in Round 10. Fitzroy were stung against St Bernard’s in Round 8. A fortnight to think about it. Returning home to Brunswick St Oval they blitzed St Bede’s Mentone/Tigers in the opening term with 10 scoring shots to one.

It was a tighter affair on the scoreboard after the opening term with nine goals to eight, but the damage had already been done.

Had it not been for inaccuracy in front of goal, the margin could’ve been greater than 50 points. Donovan Toohey, buoyed by his Big V squad selection kicked four goals for the Roys as did Charlie Faubel who moved up to equal second on the sharpshooters table.

Both players were named the best in Luke Mahoney’s team. Five of the nine games in 2023 have seen the Roys kick over 100 points, it’s been a feature of this side throughout the first half of the year.

SBMT again had Caleb Lewis kick three goals, he’s kicked three in back to back weeks. Brayden O’Toole added another two to his season tally. Zac Calvez continued his strong individual season for the Tigers.

They’re on the road again in Round 10, heading to Como Park to tackle Old Geelong. They must win to stay in touch with the top five sides. Fitzroy are off to Monash to take on the two-blues, with heavy scoring no doubt going to be the order of the day.

Old Geelong were potentially up against it during the first half against Old Trinity. However, inaccuracy from the T’s left the door well and truly open for the OG’s.

After kicking four goals with the wind to open up a 25 point lead. The T’s kicked 1.8.14 with the breeze in the second term, and couldn’t capitalise on multiple opportunities in front of goal.

The 12 point half time margin extended to 28 at three quarter time. A bridge too far for the green and gold to climb.

Harry Thompson, as he does every week, fought on valiantly - Kicked a goal, and named in the best. Continuing his strong form, he was awarded with Big V squad selection last week by Greg Hutchison.

Mickey Nicholl’s kept his season average of two goals a game going for Old Geelong, while Harrison Kol was named Nathan Brown’s best player.

St Bernard’s are dancing to their own beat in 2023. After a lean 2022 season, scoring is back to its all time high, the winning culture is back at the Snakepit.

Monash were the latest team to feel the wrath of the ladder leaders.

Nick Di Lizio, made his senior debut. He kicked a goal early on in the piece, but would be the sideshow to his older brother Luke who kicked five goals in a best on ground display.

Matt Sauro is currently rivalring Harry Thompson as the best ruckman in Premier B with his dominance and presence around the ground.

Daniel Easson is having a stellar season for Monash, he has been a silver-lining for the club throughout 2023. James Flett kicked a goal and would be high up in the clubs best and fairest counting halfway through the year.

The 2022 Premier C premiers have had significant changes to the line-up, as well as a coaching change over summer. St Bernard’s, coming down from William Buck Premier after 2022 have a point to prove to the competition.

The two-blues next challenge is the second placed Fitzroy at Monash University.

If ever there was a ding-dong battle it comes in the form of De La Salle v St Bernard’s this weekend. The only side in the first nine rounds to keep St Bernard’s under 90 points in a contest.

The age-old argument between Joey Pignataro and Brian Waldron is renewed. Waverley Oval at 2:00 PM is where you want to be.

Monash still in the lead while St Bedes and Cobras produce large winning margins

The burdensome wind on Saturday required a change in the game play style of many Premier B women’s matches, with gusts of an average of 35 km per hour.

The ladies from Brunswick took an outing to the home of Aquinas OC over the weekend and in a low-scoring game that had viewers waiting with bated breath, it was Aquinas who reigned supreme, with only a five-point margin between the final scores.

Although Brunswick were not triumphant this week, it was goal-kickers Vanessa Lussini and Danielle Hagan, alongside their best on field Josephine Brown, who assisted in narrowing the final margin. It was goalkicking superstar, Jenna White who created success for Aquinas, scoring two goals, and supporting best player Natasha Derksen.

Both teams will have home matches next round with Brunswick coming head-to-head with the mighty Monash Blues and Aquinas up against roaring Richmond Central.

In a very windy home game for North Brunswick, the St Bedes/Mentone Tigers stole the show. In a slow game, North Brunswick struggled to make their mark up until the third quarter, scoring one behind, to the Tigers 52 points.

With an increase in accuracy and a focus on defensive efforts, can North Brunswick bring home a win next week, with another home game up against Mazenod OC?

Leading goal scorer for the Tigers made her presence felt over the weekend, scoring two goals with five other Tigers players also scoring goals. Rebecca Bennett put on an impressive best-on-field performance. Can they maintain their efforts with a match against the Cobras next week?

The Old Yarra Cobras headed to the home of Mazenod OC over the weekend. Mazenod was the first to generate some action and were in the lead up until the second quarter. However, the Cobras lifted their game and held onto a 35-point winning margin at the final siren.

Cobras representative Allanah Murray played an outstanding game with incredible conversion rates, scoring a total of three goals. Also contributing to the positive outcome was Tahlia Limburg who scored two goals, Sonya San who scored one and Illiana Zarifiriou who was deemed best-on-field.

Matilda Mckenzie kicked Mazenods only goal this week, working closely alongside Emma Camerotto who tried her best to defend her team, which led to her being recognised as their best player.

Can the Cobras continue their efforts next week, against the Tigers, and will Mazenod have better luck, with their outing to Brunswick next round?

Monash gave Richmond Central the Blues over the weekend, as they struggled to leave their mark, scoring one behind in comparison to the nine goals and six behinds accomplished by the Blues.

Ainslee Elliott, put on an incredible best-on-field performance, converting a total of 3 goals for the Blues and supporting six other goal-kicking specialists in leading their team to victory. This leaves them with their heads held high and well-prepped for their game against Brunswick next week.

Old Ivanhoe knock over the PEGS castle as the Wellers come from the clouds

Perhaps the King’s Birthday bye came at the right time for PEGS. With momentum on their side right up until the break, they came into round nine stunned by a side who’s on the rise.

2022 tailed off for Old Ivanhoe after starting in a blaze of glory. This year, it’s not been too dissimilar, however the formline of the lads from Chelsworth Park in 2023 suggest this time around it’s more sustainable.

A six game winning streak is now what Jarrod Gieschen’s men are rolling with. A four goal head start with the wind, extended to an insurmountable 53 points by three quarter time.

The ladder leaders, restricted to just four goals for the afternoon, now sit in third spot.

Nick Reeves-Smyth led the charge with four majors in a best on ground performance, Luke Scuderi loves a goal. 22 for the season, 11 of those in the last three weeks. Patrick Naish is having an incredible season as well, running rampant through Premier C.

PEGS were without co-coach Andrew Horne, and Darby Scott who was selected in the Big V squad last week. Two key playmakers down, and the side was outplayed on the day.

They’ll be looking to bounce straight back in Round 10 against Old Camberwell Grammarians who have replaced them on top of the ladder. Recent history says PEGS win this game, but the Wellers have been hot to trot in 2023.

If momentum is anything to go by, Old Camberwell will walk into Round 10 against PEGS with a freight train stopping at no stations. Marcellin served it up to them well and truly on Saturday and will be feeling very aggrieved they didn’t walk from the ground winners.

Leading at three quarter time by 37 points. Having held the home side to two goals for three quarters (both kicked in the second term), the Wellers exploded in the final stanza with 7.9.51 to 1.0.6 and stormed home over the top of Marcellin.

In an incredible show of strength, Ben Hart and James Allen combined for four goals. Kallan Percy led from the front.

Josh Atwell did all he could for Marcellin, a goal and amongst the best players. Matt Capetola and Alex Strempell were also some of the best players on the day.

The win gives Old Camberwell top spot on the table, while Marcellin are still situated at the bottom. Can they cause the upset this weekend against Mazenod and leapfrog the Monders in ninth?

Apart from a 7-goal onslaught from Old Carey in the second term against Ormond - These two sides matched up relatively well against one another on the weekend.

Nine different goalkickers for the Panthers had a hand in the 47 point victory which was set up with the aid of the breeze at the Carey Sports Complex. Much of the damage was caused by Godden, Gaiardo, Ellwood , and Bean who kicked 8 goals between them.

Carey has a unique scoreline of having won three games, lost two and drawn two. The points combined has them inside the top four for the moment. Equal on points with Mazenod, percentage being the separator between the two.

For the Monders, the brigade of hyphens were positives to come from the contest - Zach Hanson-Villalobos, Jonty Sharman-Smith, and Kai Seeto-Grossi. Each one fighting valiantly for the afternoon.

Ormond will now face a red hot Old Ivanhoe back at EE Gunn Reserve. Old Carey will have their second week off in three weekends with the bye.

Jack Casperz was the standout forward for the weekend in Premier C with a bag of five as the Nodders put Hampton Rovers to the sword.

With the Rovers finally able to debut Josh Hudghton (son of St Kilda legend Max), it was a see-sawing opening half before Mazenod were able to get on top after half time.

A 6-point half time lead became 21 at three quarter time before the final margin of 49 sealed the fate of the Rovers.

Liam Welsford put in his best performance of the year as did Thomas Warby for the home side. While Liam O’Driscoll and Christian Carnovale continued their impressive seasons for the Rovers.

The Nodders last three matches have seen them go 2-1 and stay right in touch with the top four halfway through the season. They know what it’s going to take in 2023 to climb the mountain again, spurred on by the heartache of the 2022 finals campaign.

Round 10 pins them against Marcellin, an opportunity to re-establish a strong set of percentage and close the gap on Old Carey who are ahead of them.

The Rovers will face a well rested, double-bye Parkdale. Owen Lalor will face off against his old side, he was able to come up trumps in 2022, can he do it again in 2023?

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

Spud’s Game

Old Haileybury dedicated Round 9 to raising muchneeded funds for mental fitness programs delivered out of the Danny Frawley Centre as part of ‘Spud’s Game’. A cause very close to the club, Spud was the founding coach of the Hearts and a great mate we all miss to this day. Supporters came out in force last Saturday at Princes Park, as the club celebrated a man who did so much for the club.

Spud’s Game provided the opportunity to reflect on a great man and encourage players to check in on their mates over the coming days and weeks, just as our mate Spud always did.

Fittingly Spud’s Game was the week before Tackle Your Feelings Round in the VAFA. The program is delivered by a local psychologist and aims to help participants gain the tools to Understand, Recognise and Respond to signs of mental ill-health in their players. If your club would like to connect with the Tackle Your Feelings Program, please reach out to VAFA Club Development Coordinator, Casey Crapper (casey@vafa.com.au)

Incoming AFL CEO Andrew Dillon was fully invested in the Old Xaverians victory over Old Brighton at Brighton Beach Oval last weekend.

Dillon made up part of the commentary team on KommunityTV and RSN Xtra as his former side overcame the travel, and the windy conditions in a barnstorming performance.

Dillon is one of four Old Xaverians who was part of the straight six premierships between 1995-2000, he played 290 games for the club and is a legend of the red and black.

He will officially take over the role as CEO of the AFL from another former VAFA star, Gill McLachlan (University Blues premiership captain 2004) in October this year.

Andrew Dillon calls the action

All 4 teams at Elsternwick win in club first

Round nine produced a little piece of history for Elsternwick AFC, when, for the first time in their 117-year history, the club celebrated all four teams winning on the same day.

A proud Club President, Jarrad Nas, stated “The past few years has seen our club grow exponentially from two teams to four, with a strong women’s team being established who are playing outstanding football this season and currently sit in top position on the ladder. The club now has over 150 registered players and many more signed up members and is now in a very strong position on both financial and membership fronts to continue to improve and grow in the coming years. It is a very exciting time for the club as we look forward to the second half of this season and beyond.”

This historic occurrence could be the precursor for a big 2023 with all four teams putting in a strong start to the 2023 season and with all teams well positioned to contest finals. A big well done to all teams on this wonderful achievement and for the season to date.

Women’s Rising Star Nominee

Poppy Palma (De La Salle)

The VAFA congratulates Poppy Palma from De La Salle OCFC who has been nominated as the Round 9 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Poppy has risen to the occasion both on and off the field. She has shined in the midfield, finding herself named amongst the best week after week, and with that brought a level of maturity and sense of leadership in her first season in the seniors!

What the club said:

Poppy came to us at the end of March through a connection with several of our U19 Men’s players. She made an instant impression at training and in her first practice match prior to the start of the season. For a young player, she is an incredible competitor, always first going for the ball. She has endeared herself to her new teammates with her infectious personality and positivity on and off the field, with her football doing plenty of talking.

On a number of occasions Poppy has been exposed to the challenges of senior football early on, playing on some stronger and more experienced opponents who have challenged her, but she continues to push through those challenges and excel through the middle of the ground and pushing forward to help impact the scoreboard.

Of our 9 games this season, Poppy has played 8 of them and been named in the best players in 7 of those 8 games, displaying on field maturity and consistency well beyond her 19 years.

She is an on-field leader of an incredibly young brigade, the second Rising Star from our program and with such a significant core of our playing group 25 and under, it is an exciting time for the development of the De La Salle Women’s program.

Affectionately known as ‘Chicken’ we cannot wait to see what the future holds for Poppy, she is going to do some wonderful things in football and we hope that she is 8 games into a long and successful career in De La Salle colours.

Men’s Rising Star Nominee

Harrison Miller (Williamstown CYMS)

The VAFA congratulates Harrison Miller from Williamstown CYMS, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 9. Harry produced a 2-goal performance in his side’s gutsy win over AJAX from the weekend.

What the club said:

From the time Harry has joined the club through the U19s program, he has been a great example of everything the CYs want to represent. Harry is fierce in his attack and infectious with his attitude and energy that he brings to the entire club. Harry had a taste of senior footy in 2022 and has used the 2023 pre-season to springboard into the seniors where he’s averaging two goals a game from his first three matches.

Coach Con Terzoglou best sums up how Harry is perceived at the club: “Every time someone talks about Harry Miller, they do it with a smile”.

Lions stun Bears, while Gryphons remain undefeated at halfway mark

Therry Penola vs Kew FC

A wave of momentum for the Kew Bears leading into this game, coming off a great win over UHS two weeks prior, and were aiming to really chase down the Krushers for that second spot.

The Lions burst out of the blocks early giving them the early ascendancy within the game with the Bears failing to score a goal in the first term, making it that much more difficult to get back into the game. Kane O’Hallaron starred for the Lions as he was a vocal point up forward, giving them the best opportunity to convert. Jackson Young and Matthew Lyons were instrumental for Therry as they took the game on and were able to capitalise in key moments throughout the game.

As much as the Bears started slowly in the first half, skipper Max Waters and forwards Michael Hannon and Regan Smith were able to get some momentum going for Kew, as they were able to kick some handy goals. But in the end, it was a little too late as the Lions came away with a crucial win to keep their season alive in 2023 and give them some belief heading into the second half of the season. As for the Bears they slip to fourth on the ladder.

UHS-VU vs Preston Bullants

Well after a loss to the Bears a fortnight prior UHS were eager to get back on the winners list against the Bullants. The Bullants produced quite the start, bursting out of the gates with full energy and drilling home six goals to four behinds in the first term. This saw a potential upset looming with stars Nicholas Perizzolo and Alex Johnston giving the Bullants early momentum within the game.

UHS were needing a miracle to stay in the game. Harrison Rocke and Finn Urie were pivotal in delivering just that. While the Bullants kept UHS at an arm’s length from the Vultures for majority of the game giving them the best shot at a win and shaking up the top 5. The Vultures gave glimpses that they were going to serge back into the game with a flurry of late goals in the third. And just like that, with one goal from the Bullants to six final goals from the Vultures, UHS walked away with a some-what comfortable win in a game that was really controlled by Preston for the first three quarters. This win puts UHS-VU back into third spot on the ladder after the Kew Bears went down to Therry.

West Brunswick vs Old Peninsula

The Magpies took on the Pirates at the Ranford Oval. Off to a strong start, the Magpies just couldn’t miss, kicking five straight goals to half time. It is clear Coach William Dillon has been focusing on goal kicking, which has most certainly paid off. The Pirates on the other hand started a tad slower, only managing a goal in the first term but it wasn’t a sign of bad form, they just eased into the game gradually.

Three goals in the second quarter gave the game some meaning as the Pirates took it to the Magpies. The Magpies did have some quality players though with Bill Irving and Ben Hutchison, both pivotal in making the most of their scoring shots. The third quarter saw the Pirates take full control of the game, with their eleven scoring shots to the Magpies’ one, which really set Pirates up to come away with the win. But the Magpies came back to reduce the deficit to just ten points. Overall, an exciting game of football between the middle of the table.

Prahran vs Glen Eira

Nine rounds in and at the halfway point of the home and away season and the Gryphons seriously have the premiership cup in their reach with another nine games remaining. The Two Blues benefited from accurate kicking in the first term. Rory Brodie set the early foundations for the Two Blues, as the Gryphons were kept to their lowest score at quarter time this season.

But in true Glen Eira fashion, they took the game back on their own terms as Tim Johnston blasted another big bag, making him one of Division 1’s most damaging players in the forward line. He was helped by Hayden and Sean Bass who chimed in with three of their own respectively. The Two Blues were not able to recover, missing opportunities to execute goals at key moments. The Gryphons came away with the win with a 45-point victory.

Oakleigh vs Ivanhoe.

Oakleigh Krushers were at their damaging best on Saturday when they took on Ivanhoe. The Krushers snagged six goals in the opening term with Aaron Cloke and Eddie Standish once again giving no mercy to the Hoers, really taking the game away from them.

Aaron Cloke showed everyone why he has still got it, after kicking 75 goals in 2022, and this year possibly even more. Ivanhoe through Wayne Schultz and Michael Doyle were able to play some of their best footy but just were not able to match the Krushers dominance on the scoreboard. The Krushers came away with a crushing win, 109-point victors and really cementing the top 2 spot.

Old Haileybury cause upset of the season

The first match of the round saw Old Geelong continue their winning streak to make it four in a row, whilst keeping Old Melburnians goalless on the day.

In the battle between third and fourth on the ladder, Old Geelong dominated for the whole day, kicking a goal in all but the second term, while simultaneously thwarting all of Old Melburnians’ attempts at attack.

The bests for Old Geelong were Camilla Taylor, Isabella Mcleod and Danielle Trott, who each ended with a goal to their name. While the recently Big V squad-nominated Clare Fraser stood out for the Omelettes once again.

The next match had Marcellin OC travel to Rathmines Road Reserve to take on the battling Hawthorn AFC

The Hawks started well, trailing by only a goal at the first break, but were unable to hold on, allowing the Sheagles to kick 2.8 in the second term. Hawthorn failed to use the wind to their advantage in the third term, only managing one behind. Conversely, Marcellin piled on an extra three goals in the final term to win the game by a massive 50 points.

Charlotte Kanini-Parsons was best for Hawthorn, while Rachel Urquhart also put in a strong performance, producing the Hawks’ only goal of the day. For the Sheagles, Zoe Glascott was outstanding, slotting three majors and being named as the best on ground. Beaumaris once again showed that they are the side to beat this year, after defeating Old Xaverians by 26 points. Old Xaverians did well to hold the Sharks to four goals but were unable to pose any serious threat to the ladder-leaders who were in front all day.

Holly Tysoe was instrumental for Beaumaris, ably supported by the offensive efforts of her teammates, Samantha Baisas and Sarah Collins, who finished with 2 goals each.

Amy Benifer and Tahyrn Mant helped to keep Old Xaverians in the game, but with their team only managing one major for the day, it was never going to be enough to beat the dominant Sharks.

Old Camberwell Grammarians have returned to form with a convincing win over Hampton Rovers. While the Rovers held a narrow 2-point lead at quarter time, Old Camberwell came out firing in the second term and did not slow down in the second half, eventually defeating the Rovers by six goals.

It was a brilliant team effort by Old Camberwell, with seven different goal scorers contributing to their final score, but it was Alexandra Herrington who got the coach’s praise with another team-best performance.

For Hampton Rovers, Poppy Ward and Jade Wulkan stood out with their skills and determination.

The final match of the round proved to be the most exciting one as Old Haileybury caused one of the upsets of the season with a solid win over second-placed Old Brighton.

With Old Haileybury hosting the match as part of the annual Spud’s Game, the Hearts certainly lifted for the occasion, honouring Spud Frawley with a 24-point win.

Grace Vanderwaal and Bridget Hanrahan were at their best for Old Haileybury, while Serene Vudiniabola and Taylah Vines-Chapple were damaging up forward with two goals apiece.

For Old Brighton, Stephanie Bierenbroodspot and Bridgette Hagan were valiant in defeat.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2023 24 DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S Access Team Lists on GameDay via VAFA.com.au

With only two wins separating 3rd and 7th on the ladder, Round 10 looms as an opportunity for a ladder re-shuffle, with several rousing match ups to look forward to.

Old Brighton will look to get back on the winners list when they host the in-form Old Geelong on Saturday morning. Old Brighton had a comfortable win over Old Geelong when the two sides met in Round 4, but Old Geelong have since found form with four back-to-back wins.

Meanwhile, Old Melburnians will host Hampton Rovers in what is a must-win game for the Rovers if they hope to keep their finals dreams alive.

Another exciting Round 10 match up this weekend will be between Old Camberwell Grammarians and Old Xaverians. Looking at the ladder, Old Camberwell would appear to be the strong favourite, but the two sides drew when they met back in Round 4, and Old Camberwell have struggled with consistency this year, with no consecutive wins thus far.

At the same time, Marcellin OC will host Old Haileybury in another spicy contest. Marcellin have been playing well this season, however, Old Haileybury have just proven that they can match it with the best sides in the competition.

The final match of the round will see Beaumaris host Hawthorn AFC. With Hawthorn yet to record a win in Division 1, it will be a tall order for them to topple the undefeated Sharks.

Round 9 saw Division 2 compete against the wind in an epic series of hard-fought victories.

Arguably the strongest backline of the division, the Brunswick mix of Jake Ralston, Tahj Haddock, and Lewis White, against arguably the strongest forward line in the competition, the Whitefriars dynamic duo Daniel Wood (who is soaring high on the goal kicking tally at 41 goals) and Samuel Kieseker, foretold this top four clash to be one for the ages.

Brunswick stormed to Alec Gillon Oval and came out with a bang, putting on a phenomenal first half display. Kicking 12 goals in the first half thanks to clever tactics and tough footy, Gus Coverdale played his role with expertise, and Jasper Paevere played his game of the season, winning tap after tap in the ruck and used his strength on the ground.

But the Friars are never ones to give up regardless of a 38-point deficit by half time. The friars came to the third and brought along with them the classic Friars fire, Spencer Larsen ran his boots off to aid the domination of the corridor, Nicholas Garratt put in a blinder of a performance and Ryan Turner displayed that famous Whitefriars never die attitude. But, even Michael Nitas and his 5 total goals couldn’t bring home the victory for the fighting Friars.

Jake Ralston upheld his responsibility with masterful expertise against the goal magnets Daniel Wood and Samuel Kieseker, with the help of Tahj Haddock and Lewis White, keeping the dynamic duo to three goals total. Ultimately the Brunswick gameplan, implementation and class act defensive play proved too much finishing with a 34-point victory. Hopefully a full Whitefriars squad will be available for their round 17 clash, when the two sides meet again.

The Koonung Park skirmish between the Old Yarra Cobras and South Melbourne Districts was a desperate battle for and against the wind. The Swans were unable to capitalise on the wind in the first quarter, while the Cobras were able to capitalise in the second. The likes of Shaun Wilson, Oscar Paulke and Vincenzo Armenia had an outstanding performance, and with the help of star forward Sam Bradford (2 Goals) brought the Swans to a neck and neck three quarter time.

The tight game all day took a different turn in the fourth. Elliott Brandon-Jones put in his performance of the season, and with the help of Nick Zappala and Anthony Lamana in the midfield, the Cobras capitalised on the wind providing opportunity after opportunity for star forwards Anthony Raso (2 Goals) and Jack Hall (2 Goals). By the final siren the Cobras broke away with a 16-point victory and leap themselves to the top four. Parkside have doubled down on their supremacy over Division 2; now with a four-game win streak after their 42-point victory over St Mary’s Salesian. The Devils possess a demon-like ability to pull opportunity out of thin air. After a neck and neck first quarter, the Devils led by a single point. The Saints brought a competitive edge throughout the second and third but began to lag behind, and the fourth quarter undoubtedly showed it was Devils Day at Ferndale Park. Jack Hamilton put in his best performance of the year dominating the field and kicking 4 goals. Benedict Douglas (2 Goals) and Michael Romano (3 Goals) had an all-star display, while key forward Benjamin Radford (5 Goals) has got his eyes keen on the division’s goal kicking tally. The Devils went 7.2 in the fourth, an unstoppable spectacle that shows a roster filled to the brim with talent with many possessing the skill and expertise in front of goal.

Even without the help of 2010 Premiership Player Dale Thomas, the Old Paradians have put in a masterful display in Round 9. David Huntley held his own with his tough physicality, while Luke Brock had a remarkable rendition of hard fought footy and strong in and under. With the help of James King providing opportunity, Blair Healy (3 goals) and Daniel Comande (2 Goals) converted with style leading to a nail-biting comeback and a 17 point victory over MHSOB.

Jubilee Park saw a lacklustre start for Bulleen Templestowe, with Aquinas shooting to a 20-point lead after the first quarter. Jamie Cortese refused to say ‘no’ with a well-earned best on ground by providing opportunities for Anthony Nicholas Lucisano (5 Goals) to make his mark on the scoreboard. Murphy Moore and Sebastian Failla put in the work and reaped the rewards with the Bullants coming home with a smile and a suspenseful 2-point victory after a desperate comeback.

Ladder split in the middle as all top four sides claim victories

Played in the windiest conditions so far this season, every Round 9 game saw an exciting contest between teams determined to make their mark half way through the season.

MCC hosted the Albert Park Falcons at Beaumaris Secondary College in the first time these teams have played this year. With only 17 making up Saturday’s side for MCC, Albert Park was at an advantage with a team of 24. The Falcons were dominant in the opening quarter, keeping MCC scoreless going into quarter time. Kicking with the wind in the second quarter, MCC managed to hit the scoreboard and closed the margin to 21 points heading into half time.

Returning from the main break, Albert Park turned up the heat, extending their lead to 33 points. With no intention of relieving the pressure, the Falcons skillful ball movement in the fourth quarter helped set up opportunities in front of goal where the team was able to convert. Seven separate goal scorers for the Falcons contributed to the score board throughout the game, highlighting Albert Park’s versatile list. The Falcons soared away with the game and a comfortable 40-point victory.

Alexandra Stranger was best on for MCC, while the heart and soul of the Falcon’s team, captain Johannah Griffin, was best on for Albert Park and celebrated her 50th game by leading the team to another win.

In a close match up, Ivanhoe versed the Parkdale Vultures at Ivanhoe Park. Both struggling with the windy conditions, each side was focused on capitalising on scoring opportunities when kicking with the wind at the southern end of the ground.

Ivanhoe opened the scoring in the first quarter kicking two points while keeping Parkdale to zero. With most of the game looking like “ping pong footy”, creating forward fifty entries away from the southern end was a challenge for both sides. Ivanhoe’s Talya Callahan showcased her strength and smarts playing center-half back, taking intercept marks and making Parkdale’s forwards play wide resulting in shots on goal from difficult angles.

Parkdale put on a strong defensive effort in the third quarter, crowding the goal line and stopping Ivanhoe’s attempts at goal. Heading into the fourth quarter four points down, Parkdale’s Sammy Kerr put the team on her back and kicked the winning goal from the pocket to put Parkdale in front until the final siren.

Across town and enjoying the home ground advantage, ladder leaders Williamstown took on St Mary’s Salesian at Fearon Reserve. A decent first quarter effort from Williamstown saw them go into quarter time with a 14-point lead, with St Mary’s still in the game. Williamstown seemed to just be warming up in the first, kicking seven goals out of 13 scoring shots in the second.

The onslaught continued into the second half of the game with St Mary’s struggling to keep up with Williamstown’s pressure and ball movement. Lucy Dobbyn kicked St Mary’s only goal of the game, while Williamstown star forward Alessia Acquaro kicked four goals and led Williamstown to a huge 93-point victory.

Back in Melbourne’s east, Old Trinity faced off against Therry Penola for the second time this season, playing at Hudson Oval Marles Playing Fields. Looking to redeem themselves, Therry Penola had an opportunity to test themselves against a top four side and potentially bring home a win.

An impressive first quarter effort saw Old Trinity keep Therry Penola scoreless going into quarter time, while managing eight shots on goal and scoring 23 points. Old Trinity’s Simone Lin kicked the first goal of her career, leading the team into quarter time in extra high spirits. Kicking with the wind in the second quarter, Therry Penola capitalised on the opportunity and scored one goal, with Old Trinity not making any changes to the scoreboard.

Maintaining the energy going into the second half of the game, the challenge of kicking against the wind worked to Old Trinity’s advantage as they added another 22 points to their total while Therry Penola was stuck on one goal. The last quarter end swap proved too little too late for Therry Penola as they scored one more goal and one behind, leaving Old Trinity the victors of the Round 4 rematch.

The return of Footy headlined by a heavyweight bout

The first round after the bye always brings with it a variety of questions. Plenty of which went a long way to being answered on Saturday afternoon.

As the cream of the crop rose to flex their muscles and discipline and came out massive winners heading into the second half of the season.

First up, Wattle Park faced Power House. For these two sides it presented a real opportunity to either move ahead inside a comfortable top four position, or a chance to steal a win and make the finals mix all that more exciting.

Both sides managed to jump out of the blocks strong with only 7 points separating them at the first quarter break before Wattle Park and the kicking boots of Zach Kearns were able to steady the ship with a 10-point advantage in a scrappy affair. Power House bought into the struggle coming out of the half time break managing to bring the margin within two kicks, before Wattle Park turned on the afterburners and kicked away to win by a staggering 40 points.

The win is no longer a ´confidence boost´ for the Animals, now cementing themselves as a genuine threat come finals time if they can continue their recent run of form in the way of 4 wins on the trot.

Out at Holmes/Todd Oval, Elsternwick came face to face with a determined Richmond Central side who are playing to stay out of the relegation zone come the end of the season. Elsternwick got the jump early with Paul Sanderson coming out of the long weekend with a serious case of leather poisoning lifting his side to a massive 26-point margin after the first break.

In one of the greater turnarounds of the season, Richmond flicked the switch and moved the ball better than anyone in the competition, bringing the margin back to level at the half time break whilst simultaneously keeping Elsternwick to 1-point for the quarter. The second half of football played out similar to what we saw in the first, with Elsternwick managing to gain control in the opening quarter before Richmond dug their heels and pushed for a comeback, falling 10 points short in their quest.

The win now moves Elsternwick to outright second on the ladder with just two losses for the year, whilst Richmond now sits third last on two wins holding on by percentage.

Joining the snakes toward the bottom of the table was the battle of the brains with La Trobe taking on Swinburne in a hard-fought mongrel contest out at St James Park. The first quarter was all sewn up by Swinburne before the second became the La Trobe show, managing to boot 7 goals 8 in one quarter to lift from 24 points down to 24 points ahead in the biggest margin shifter we have seen this year.

La Trobe looked to the talents of best afield Darcy Thorn for much of the contest, managing to kick three goals whilst also playing with the ball on a string whilst Swinburne continued to feed Aiden Vesty all afternoon long, leading into the final turn. The game had as many turns as a corn maze but eventually La Trobe and their ability to score big when called upon came out on top as 11-point winners, taking their tally to two wins for the year and lifting themselves off the bottom spot on the ladder.

The final game of the round was the game of the season with the match up of Canterbury and Hawthorn, a match underpinned between two of the Division 3 heavyweights. Out at Canterbury sports ground for a Saturday afternoon the Cobras came out in numbers to support their 1 loss men’s side, as they threw all they had at a consistent Hawks outfit.

Led by team of the year half forward Justin Raiti, the hawks kicked true in the first half managing to head into the rooms two points ahead of the top of the table Cobras, making the most of fast football and big bodies. In the second half, the Cobras began to shift through the gears with big forwards John Nicolopoulos and Jayden Cutts doing their bit for the side, trailing by 9 points heading into the final quarter.

It was electrifying football between the two potential grand finalists, with the Hawks looking to redeem their round two loss against the Cobras, however it wasn’t meant to be. The inform team of the competition, the heartbreak story of last year’s finals run reigned supreme at home with a five-goal final term breaking apart the hawthorn side to clinch the victory and sit a game clear on top of the table in an 11-point win at home.

With 9 weeks remaining this season the Cobras will now face outright second Elsternwick to back up the weekend’s monster win, whilst Richmond has a chance to get a win on the board against Swinburne at home.

Demons defeat Tigers as Falcons begin their flight

The first match of the round saw Eley Park take on Albert Park in an important game for both sides. The first quarter saw the Falcons pick up right where they had left off from their previous match as they held control over the first quarter kicking 5 goals, whilst keeping the Sharks scoreless to take a 37-point lead into quarter time. The second quarter saw the Sharks begin to find their way as they were able to win the quarter adding 2 goals whilst keeping the Falcons to a single goal, reducing the lead to 33 points.

The third quarter saw the Falcons do what they do best and that is gain momentum and then run away with it. The Falcons were able to add on a whopping 7 goals in the quarter to stretch their lead out to 80 points. The Sharks however showed that they still had the fight in them as they were able to kick 3 goals of their own in the 4th whilst keeping the Falcons goalless. The 4th quarter efforts of the Sharks however weren’t enough to eradicate the dominant first and third quarter of the Falcons which saw Albert Park walk away with a 60-point win. This takes their winning streak to 2 as they begin their fight up the ladder.

The best for the Sharks were Zachary Hayes, Angus Fowler and Bailey Bowyer. The best for the Falcons were Felix Metz, Ashley Evans and Zak Knight. Tom Johnston had 2 majors for the Sharks. Jake Wakeling, Kane Scanlon and Martin Louey rounded out the goalkickers for the team. Ashley Evans had 4 goals for the Falcons whilst teammates Zak Knight (3) and Christopher Mason (2) also contributed when it mattered most. Eley Park will now host Masala with both sides desperate for a win. Albert Park will return back home where they host St Johns as they look to extend their winning streak out to 3 and ascend up the ranks.

The second match of the round saw a battle between 2nd and 3rd on the ladder as Box Hill North made the short trip to Dandenong to take on Masala. The first quarter saw the Demons take advantage of the strong winds to one end of the ground as they had a 6-goal quarter whilst only allowing 2 behinds from Masala to hold a 43-point lead at the end of the first quarter. With the win in the second quarter, the Tigers were able to claw their way back into the game with 5 majors to reduce the lead back to 16 points.

Once again, the wind played a major part in the game as the Demons were able to take all the momentum for the game with a massive 30 minutes of football, adding on 7 goals whilst keeping the Tigers scoreless. The lead increased out to 58 points with a quarter of football to play. The final term saw Masala begin their fight back but it was too little too late, and despite adding on 3 goals, Box Hill North’s first and third-quarter efforts were too great, resulting in a 46-point win for the Demons.

Luke Broomhall and David Velardo both kicked 2 goals for the Tigers. Multiple goal kickers for the Demons included Joshua Chivers (3), Jack Dullard (2), Joshua Hocking (2) and Michael Trkulja (2). The best for Masala were Luke Broomhall, Flynn Cassar and Christian Samuel. Amongst the best for the Demons were Michael Trkulja, Kyle Hocking and David Edwards. Masala will now turn their attention to Eley Park as they seek their first win in a month. Box Hill North will now play host to North Brunswick in what should be next week’s match of the round.

The final match of the round saw St Johns take on North Brunswick under lights in a twilight fixture. Both teams got off to a slower start than usual as both adjusted to the conditions that came with a game under the lights. With the sole goal of the quarter, it was the Bulls that finished the quarter with a 9-point lead. The second quarter saw both teams start to up the tempo a little bit with 2 goals each, so the lead remained at 9 for the Bulls with a half of football to play.

The third quarter saw the Bulls begin to find their ways as they were able to sway the game completely in their favour with a 5-goal quarter, whilst only allowing a single goal from the JOCs to extend the margin out to 33 points. The final quarter was a more even contest, but it was too little too late as despite the JOCs kicking 2 goals in the quarter, the momentum was all North Brunswick’s from halftime onwards. In the end, it was the Bulls that gain another away win with a 40-point victory over the JOCs.

Goal kickers for the JOCs were Corey Ely, Dorus Grobler, Mitchell Clarke, Liam Salisbury and Michael Horton. For the Bulls, Simon Woodward led the charge on the scoreboard with 3 majors. Finley Griffett kicked 2 goals of his own for the Bulls while other contributors included Luke Rositani and Marcus Watt. The best for the JOCs included Michael Horton, Daniel Cattolico and Luke Lacy. The best for the Bulls were Simon Woodward, Cameron Lee and Zac Dicianni. St Johns will now make the trip down to take on Albert Park who are one of the most in-form teams in the division. North Brunswick will remain on the road as they now face Box Hill North who are coming off a big win against Masala.

MILESTONES

Ash Hunter (Glen Eira Gryphons)

Congratulations Ash on playing 50 VAFA games. An Old McKinnon/Glen Eira U19s graduate, Ash is an uncompromising old-fashioned footballer who loves a goal, thrives in the ruck and can do a job in the backline. Congratulations Ash, we look forward to you playing many more games for Glen Eira over the coming years.

Aditya Munukutla (MHSOB FC)

Congratulations to Aditya “Dish” Munukutla, who plays game number 50 for MHSOBFC this weekend. After graduating from Melbourne High School in 2018, Dish started his football journey in the development squad, becoming captain in 2021. After spending 2022 in the reserves, Dish made his senior debut in round one of 2023, and established himself as a key part of the defensive unit. After 50 games of constant improvement, everyone at the Unicorns is excited to keep watching Dish’s football career progress.

Pat Carroll (La Trobe University)

Congratulations to La Trobe’s Pat Carroll on reaching 50 games. Caz first joined the ‘Trobers in 2014 playing in the Under 19’s. In 2015 he was appointed captain of the Colts, played as a key forward kicking 46 goals, and also made his senior debut in Round 16. Weekend work commitments made it difficult for Caz to play more than a handful of games in subsequent seasons, only pulling on the red & black when someone was needed. Pat returned to the club this season and has been a key forward playing in The Midday Show. Well done Paddy on your 50 games in the red & black!

Connor Goodison (Old Scotch)

Kris McDonald (MHSOB FC)

Congratulations to club stalwart Kris McDonald, who brings up game 200 for MHSOBFC this Saturday. Since joining the Unicorns in 2004, Kris has played in many successful sides, the highlight being his reserves premiership in 2016. Off the field, Kris has been a key part of the club’s social events for many years and served as the club’s treasurer during a challenging transitional period. Kris received MHSOBFC’s highest honour, the Sam Silberberg Award, in 2011, in recognition of his contribution to the club, and even a 2018 move to Sydney hasn’t prevented Kris from continuing his involvement with the Unicorns. Congratulations, and thank you, Kris McDonald.

Congratulations to Connor Goodison on reaching 50 games for Old Scotch Football Club. Connor joined the club from the Wangaratta Football & Netball Club in 2019, playing a big part in the under 19 premiership team that year. Connor progressed to the Men’s 2nd XVIII post COVID in 2021 and predominantly played in the 1st XVIII in 2022. Connor is playing well at William Buck Premier level, and we look forward to seeing him continue to develop. We wish Connor all the best on reaching this milestone. 200

Jarrod Egglestone (Therry Penola)

250

Club legend Jarrod Egglestone played his 250 th game for Therry Penola last Saturday. Eggy embodies everything Therry strives for - loyalty, honesty, bravery, selflessness. Over the course of his 250-game career Eggy has been a multiple Club Best & Fairest, multiple League Best & Fairest, Best on Ground (Grand Final) and Premiership Captain. In addition to these outstanding achievements Eggy has epitomised leadership and captaincy and helped to inspire those around him. Long before he was appointed Senior Captain at barely 20 years of age Eggy had set the standards for our football club, both on and off the field, and continues to do so to this day. Respected and no-doubt feared by opponents, Egg’s outstanding skill, determination and will to win have seen him inspire Therry to many a victory over the years.
