The Amateur Footballer 2024 - Week 10

SEASON 2024 - June 22

As we reach the halfway mark for our 2024 VAFA season, it is timely to report on our progress this year on our 2023 - 2025 Strategic Plan objectives.

The Strategic Plan identified the VAFA’s desire to deliver on the following seven areas:

1) provide stability to both the Men’s and Women’s Football competition.

The sustainability of our VAFA Clubs is at the forefront of our Club Support department led by Sean Walker and Pranav Menon who actively meet with Club Committees to assist with best practice advice on strategic plans, committee structures, volunteer recruitment, grant applications, etc.

Having worked with together with each Club in 2023, it’s great to see the re-emergence of Mentone Panthers and Westbourne Grammarians in 2024.

Participation in our VAFA competition has grown in 2024 by a further 2% year on year. The opportunity for further pathway growth in establishing an U19 Women’s competition, and expanding our current Masters and U19 Men’s competitions is high on our radar for 2025.

2) support Clubs in their challenges with volunteers and financing

Acknowledging the burden of governance requirements, our aim is to reduce the workload on volunteers by removing certain tasks (eg. Player points) and introducing new initiatives, such as the Player Assistance Program that players can access directly.

We have established a library of resources and best practice initiatives for Club Committees to access on the VAFA Website under the ‘Club Admin’, ‘Club Support’ tabs.

Thanks to the work of Finance & Administration Officer, Karen Bennett, our Finance Sub Committee is currently undertaking a Club financial summary exercise so we can provide a benchmark report to Clubs and identify where they can focus energies for improvement.

3) increase the recruitment and retention of umpires and provide great career pathways.

Umpire Manager Stephen Privitera has done an excellent job in managing the recruitment of over 200 new umpires into the VAFA for this season. New initiatives have been introduced with secondary/ tertiary school based programs, stronger pathway alignments with YJFL and SMJFL, and new training facilities in the north (Parkville) and north east (Bulleen) to help us reach 500 registered umpire this year.

Our biggest challenge though is the average annual churn rate of between 35 - 40%, and we are working with the Umpire Coaches and Clubs to establish the best welcoming and supportive environment for umpires coming into the VAFA so they will remain engaged.

4) deliver new and improved facilities for patrons, umpires and match day officials at Elsternwick Park.

We have a scheduled meeting with Bayside Council to discuss a Master Plan for the Elsternwick Park football Oval precinct. High on the agenda is a new grandstand with undercover seating and toilet facilities for patrons.

We will be unveiling new 300lux lights at Elsternwick Park this month, which, together with a ground surface upgrade, will enable us to host night matches.

5) provide a safe and inclusive environment to play football

The VAFA maintains and enforces a unique strict code of conduct for Spectators, Coaches and Players to ensure the environment is the most welcoming in community football.

We proactively worked with AFL in producing an updated National Community Vilification and Discrimination policy to reflect feedback from our Clubs and players.

Life Member Phil Stevens is conducting a facility audit of all our VAFA grounds to enable us to advocate to AFL and local Council for financial support to meet requirements for ground conditions, lighting, scoreboard, gender and umpire changeroom facilities etc.

6) explore representative football opportunities for players of both genders.

After a hiatus since 2019, we reignited our Premier Men’s and Women’s Big V teams in matches against the Perth Football League in 2023. This year, GM Football Dale Christie and Football Operations Gabi Martin have organised our teams to travel to Perth to defend their titles. 2025 marks 100 years of VAFA Big V football and we will host the Adelaide Football League, as we did at the MCG back in 1925, to mark the occasion.

2024 sees the reintroduction of the Men’s Big V Representative Team from Premier B to Div 3 competitions hosting the Bendigo Football League, with a return bout locked in for 2025. We are actively seeking an opponent for a Women’s Representative team in 2025.

7) strengthen our VAFA brand and exposure, and grow our commercial revenue.

Through our media partners News Ltd (on boarded 2023) and SEN (new in 2024) we have grown the VAFA brand exposure to unprecedented levels.

Our Head of Media & Digital, Cam Voss has managed the development of our new website released this month, and is in the final stages of a media review project to set our future course for reaching a broader audience.

Renowned Ch 7 broadcaster Jason Bennett has joined our team as Broadcast and Content Manager, and attracted a number of new match day broadcasters and scribes to deliver greater exposure to our competitions.

Chief Commercial Officer Glen Towers has done an excellent job in growing our Commercial Partnerships which has seen our revenue grow from $319k in 2022 to over $500k this year.

Event Manager Susan Miller and the Big V Committee led by chair Ian Cordner, have done a tremendous job in establishing the Big V lunch as our showcase event on the VAFA calendar.

So whilst there continues to be a lot of work undertaken off the field, it’s pleasing to share the positive results to date.

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S

Cardinals leap into Top 4 in William Buck Premier Men’s

Back-to-back wins on either side of the bye have seen the Cards jump back up into the Top 4 of William Buck Premier Men’s after Round 9.

A powerful second half saw Old Scotch overwhelm Old Xaverians at Toorak Park.

Only 3 points separated the teams at the first two breaks with the Cardinals narrowly in front at the half despite Old Xavs stifling Old Scotch’s ball movement and having the better of general play.

But Old Scotch tidied up their ball use after half time and put Old Xavs to the sword, booting 8 goals to 3 to ultimately post an impressive 38-point win that sees them leapfrog Xavs and Collegians into the Top 4.

Mark Gnatt (Old Scotch): “After a tight first half, the coaching team was really pleased with the boys’ response after half-time. Our intensity and pressure on Xavs created a number of repeat F50 entries and subsequent scoreboard pressure.

“We had +20 forward entries in the second half. Our small forwards - Goodison, Thomson, Symons and Henry Brown all stood up this week and their pressure on the Xavs defence was outstanding with 22 tackles in our F50.”

Dan Donati (Old Xavs): “Super competitive and high standard first half from both teams. I certainly felt we had our chances in the first half to be a couple in front, but that’s football.

“We’re doing plenty right at the contest, but probably a bit too much wrong in big moments in other areas of the ground. We’re a young and developing team, and I’ve got no doubt improvement will continue.”

The Brighton Beach Oval showdown between the league-leaders and reigning premiers lived up to expectations as Old Brighton & Collegians played out a 2-point thriller.

There was very little between the teams all afternoon, with the largest margin being 19 points early in the third term after Collegians opened the second half with 3 goals in 5 minutes. But the Tonners stabilised and responded with the next 3 to edge in front by 3 points at the last change.

The Lions got back out to a 10-point lead midway through the last and still led by a couple of points at the 24-minute mark before 200-gamer Mike Karayannis found Jamie Hope to put the Tonners back in front.

The ladder-leaders then saw off a couple of late Collegians forays to hang on in a fantastic contest.

Marcel Bruin (Old Brighton): “Really gritty win and a tremendous way to honour and celebrate a club legend playing his 200th game.

Really pleased to hang on with Collegians pressing and having the last few shots on goal.

Sammy Flockhart was really influential as was vice-captain Tom Fisher, both thriving under immense Collegians pressure.”

Jordie McKenzie (Collegians): “Our boys brought great intent and pressure and generated some very good opportunities. We had ourselves in a strong position but were unable to hold on. Credit to Brighton, they gained ascendency by dominating contested footy in the last quarter.

Our boys kept trying to the very end, but ultimately fell short. We’ll take some great learnings from the game.

The on-ball brigade of Ong, Watson, Boucher and Mayhood were super. Beilby and Davy also continued their great seasons down back.”

St Kevin’s powered away from University Blacks in the second half to register their fourth straight win.

Blacks led by a kick after an inaccurate opening term that saw the teams combine for 3.12 at TH King Oval, before SKOB booted 4 of the 5 second-quarter goals to hold a 13-point lead at the major break.

The perennial contenders then took control in the second half, booting 9 goals to 3 and securing a percentage-boosting 53-point win – their largest victory of 2024.

Patrick Kerr & Sam Tucker continued their fine form up forward, finishing with 3 goals apiece as last season’s runners-up made an emphatic statement and strengthened their grip on second spot, while Blacks remain 2 games outside the Top 4 with a seasondefining 3 weeks to come against Old Brighton, Old Scotch and Collegians.

Anthony Lynch (St Kevin’s): “I was really pleased to see our group put in such a professional performance. The most pleasing aspect for me was our offence and ball movement.

“We have a big 2 weeks ahead with Xavs and Collegians before the double bye so we are excited to attack the next fortnight.”

Dale Bower (Uni Blacks): “We were in the game early, but couldn’t maintain our pressure around the ball or our ability to win contest and could not hold up St Kevin’s ball movement.

Old Melburnians continued their rollercoaster season, storming back onto the winner’s list with a critical 50-point win over St Bernard’s at Elsternwick Park.

The Snowdogs booting 5 straight goals to lead by 10 points at the first break. OMs responded with 4 goals to 2 in the second quarter to edge in front by a couple of points at half-time.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2024 2
Jason Bennett Access Team Lists on PlayHQ via VAFA.com.au

Once again, we saw OMs unleash a barrage – 5.2 to 0.2 in a dominant third term, followed by 4 goals to 1 in the last – and what had felt like an even clash blew out to an impressive 50-point victory that elevates Old Melburnians a game clear of St Bernard’s.

A great confidence booster for OMs who enter a challenging month with Collegians, Old Xavs, Old Brighton and St Kevin’s in their immediate future, while St Bernard’s will return home to face Uni Blues as they look to snap the 6-game losing streak that has left the early excitement of the season squarely in the rear-view mirror.

Paul Satterley (OMs): “Very pleased to see our lads get the result after persisting for the full 4 quarters. A couple of our key leaders in Will Nichols & Ed Michelmore led from the front and all 22 contributed. St Bernard’s always looked threatening so a solid win for our club.”

Steve Alessio (St Bernards): “After an encouraging first half where we used the ball well and were probably at our most efficient in front of goal for the season, it was disappointing we weren’t able to sustain that effort.”

The final match of the round saw University Blues eventually see off a plucky Fitzroy at Melbourne Uni Oval.

The Blues led by 2 points at the first change before the game opened up as the Roys booted 4 consecutive goals to build a 16-point lead before the Blues responded with 4 in 7.5 minutes to lead by 17 points at the half.

But the Roys added 3 goals to 1 in the third term to close within 5 points at the last break.

They had their chances in the last – Fitzroy kicking 0.4 to Blues’ 3.0 as the hosts racked up their third straight win and jumped up to third. Sam Grimley the standout with 6 goals to close within 4 of team-mate James Stewart at the top of the goalkicking table.

Guy Martyn (Uni Blues): “I thought we showed a lot of grit throughout the game to get a hard-fought win.

“Losing two players in the first 10 minutes put us on the back foot a little and then after Fitzroy kicked four unanswered goals in the second quarter, things could’ve gone bad.

“We were really impressed with the way Fitzroy attacked from their back half. They got a lot of numbers back making it tough for us to score, then would slingshot forward at pace. I’d be very surprised if they didn’t get a few wins in the second half of the season.”

Travis Ronaldson (Fitzroy): “Really proud of our performance. We had a red-hot crack and gave ourselves a chance to win - we just didn’t convert our opportunities early in the last quarter. Charlie Faubel was lively up forward while Tom Holmes was strong in defence and continues to improve each week.”

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER WOMEN’S

Saints in seventh heaven after reclaiming top spot

Round 9 of the William Buck Premier Women’s competition officially marked the halfway point of the season, with the contenders separating themselves from the pretenders. St Kevin’s continued their dominance over the league to remain undefeated with a hard-fought win over rivals Old Scotch, while top-4 hopefuls Kew and Collegians battled it out in perfect conditions in a round full of compelling matchups.

Collegians were tasked with one of the most difficult away trips across the VAFA, heading to Victoria Park to take on Kew who have dropped just one game at home this season. It presented a chance for Collegians to draw level on points with Kew and push towards third.

However, things didn’t go as the visitors would have hoped, left stunned by a 5-minute onslaught from Kew who piled on four successive goals to take a 20-point lead into quarter time. The game was effectively over from that point, as Kew ran away as comfortable 28-point victors.

Dakota Villiva proved a menace to Collegian’s defence, ultimately ending the day with four majors and best on ground honours, while Eva Cafolla was strong all day, as was the ever-consistent Isabelle Harding.

Inaccuracy was the theme of the day for Collegians who were unable to make the most of their opportunities. Despite having more scoring opportunities (13 to 11), they never looked like seriously challenging the home team. Frustratingly, between the 12-minute mark of the first quarter and the 16-minute mark of the last quarter, they could only manage 0.9 compared to Kew’s 4.1, who were a class above.

By 2pm at Righetti Oval, a crowd had formed to witness one of the most anticipated matchups of the season, the top of the table clash between St Kevin’s and Old Scotch

Nerves were aplenty, which was evident in the first term as neither side managed to find a major score. St Kevin’s dominated the territory game early but were unable to make the most of their scoring opportunities, only registering four points for the quarter.

It wasn’t until the 16-minute mark of the second term that Old Scotch finally got on the board, as Eloise Defina kicked the first goal of the day.

St Kevin’s were quick to respond, as Sarah Cameron dropped a mark in the goal square but in an impressive show of composure recovered well enough to still kick the Saints’ first major of the day, earning them a 5-point buffer going into the main break.

The win was up for grabs going into the final quarter, with Old Scotch leading by the narrowest of margins after kicking the only goal of the third term.

It was the reigning premiers who stood up when the pressure was on, with St Kevin’s midfield and forward leading the charge during the bookends, while their defence withstood the continuous barrage of forward entries that came from Old Scotch amid the quarter

To put the cherry on top, St Kevin’s kicked a goal after the final siren to have the final scores read 4.7 (31) to 2.5 (17).

For Old Scotch, it was a story of almost but not quite, as they had several of their final scoring shots come painstakingly close, only to be touched on the line.

The win takes St Kevin’s to the top of the ladder where they remain the only undefeated side in the competition.

With so much talent running through both sides it was hard to pick the standout players, however, Emily Condon and Jessica Joyce deserve credit for the roles they played in St Kevins’ victory, while Jordan Mifsud was remarkable in her first game for Old Scotch this year.

Meanwhile, West Brunswick played host to Melbourne University Women’s at McAlister Oval, which proved to be an arm wrestle for much of the day before the home side kicked away in the final term to record a hard-fought 19-point victory and keep their finals aspirations on track.

The Magpies were ahead by 13 points going into the main break and would have been disappointed to not lead by even more due to some inaccuracy in front of goal, while the Mugars were unable to convert a major for the first half, registering just two behinds themselves.

MUWFC came out of the sheds resembling a different team, and the game came to life after goals from Madison Katerelos and Lucy Watkin had them within a point midway through the third term. It was game on from there, and the intensity from both sides lifted.

West Brunswick were able to compose, however, taking a 7-point lead into the final change, before a dominant last quarter saw them add an additional three majors to run away eventual 40-21 winners.

The always reliable Clare Balbata was named best afield for the victors in her 50 th game in the black and white, also kicking a goal in what was no doubt a great day of celebrations for her and the club.

For Melbourne University, Brooke Randall continued her unfaultable season with another best-on performance.

It was another tough day for Monash Blues who took a licking from Caulfield Grammarians at Frearson Oval.

Caulfield’s inefficiency in the first half kept the home side within reach, only trailing by 14 points at half time, however, the flood gates opened in the second half and Caulfield kicked three goals in each of the final two terms to lead by 48 points at the final siren.

Caulfield ruled the play all day, with Monash’s only goal coming from Ella Stephenson in the third term, however the efforts of Blues’ captain Alicia Myers did not go unnoticed, as she continuously won the ball back for Monash.

Zoe Mccurdy was terrific at half back for Caulfield, while Olivia Rundle and Grainne McLaughlin impressed up forward with three goals apiece.

Old Yarra Cobras hosted Coburg in what was an intriguing contest between two sides desperate to find some form, both coming off disappointing losses last round. Ryan Wandel was coaching his first game for the Lions, after stepping into the role late last week.

Co-Captain Alannah Murray got the team off to the perfect start, dribbling through the first goal of the day from the pocket, before a pair of brilliant run-down tackles saw the Cobras surge the ball forward and strike again through Natasha Phipps. The Cobras were on and looking potent in attack, taking a 10-point lead into the first break.

However, the break gave Coburg some much-needed time to reset and regain composure. They came out firing in the second with the perfect response, kicking the first three goals.

It all started with Julia “J-Mac” McArdle kicking a fantastic goal on the run and igniting the spark they had been searching for. They managed a whopping 10 scoring shots in the quarter to flip the script and take a 19-point advantage into the main break.

Unfortunately for the Cobras, they weren’t able to wrestle back any momentum as Coburg ran away with the game, recording a resounding 40-point triumph to stay in touch with the top six.

Sarah Jolly ended the day with three majors and was named best on for Coburg, while Georgia Sampson kicked two of her own, moving to 4th in the goal kicking tally with 13 for the season. For the home side, Evie Lee worked hard all day and was rewarded with deserved recognition for her efforts, while Cecilia Baldassarre managed two goals, moving to a total of 14 for the season.

Round 10 will see Coburg host Caulfield with both teams coming off strong wins, while Kew will look to spoil St Kevin’s undefeated streak when they host them at Victoria Park. Old Scotch should bounce back from their first loss of the season when they match up with West Brunswick, as Monash Blues face another tough opponent in Old Yarra Cobras. Finally, Melbourne University Women’s and Collegians will do battle in what always seems to be a fiery match-up.

Old Ivanhoe win fourth thriller of the season, Old Haileybury still on top

Thrillers at Glen Huntly Park and Fearon Reserve highlighted the resumption of Premier B VAFA football, but it’s Old Haileybury with a one-game hold on top spot at the end of Round 9.

Daniel Ward’s Bloods, after beginning the season with losses to Old Trinity and Beaumaris, have peeled off seven wins in a row, belting Old Camberwell thanks to a forward line clinic from Andreas Stefanakis - but there’s a bit of contention around exactly how many goals the spearhead kicked.

“In the last quarter, he kicked one on his left, but Lach Vaughan got a boot on it on the line,” explained coach Ward, with vision unclear to whether Vaughan flicked Stefanakis’ high-arcing snap as it fell through the big sticks.

“If you ask ‘Dre,’ he kicked nine!”

Stefanakis certifiably kicked six of his goals in the second half of an Old Haileybury romp, the Bloods enjoying a 21.11 (137) to 9.7 (61) win at home.

“(A) pleasing performance with our best side on paper all year,” said Ward, with James Magner (five goals), Brede Seccull (34 disposals, 10 inside 50s) and Josh Gasparini (34 disposals, seven clearances) contributing to the 76-point victory.

“We…play(ed) some patches of good football,” said Old Camberwell coach Anson Brownless, “but generally (we) were overwhelmed by a very powerful team who will take some beating for this year’s flag.”

Josh Gale, Pat Blew and Ben Carlisle were among the Wellers’ best.

A meeting with Beaumaris is ahead of Ward’s unit, the Sharks having dealt a 43-point loss to Old Haileybury last time the sides met in Round 2 - the Bloods largest and most recent loss.

Beaumaris will certainly be out to respond this week in Caulfield South after registering its lowest score of the season, kicking just 1.9 (15) after quarter time in a 63-point loss to Old Trinity.

Second on the ladder by percentage, Old Trinity was in control of the football from the get-go, registering 102 more disposals and 60 more uncontested marks than the Sharks.

Skipper Hugh Beasley kicked four goals on the day, all after half time - with a few key outs for Beaumaris proving difficult to cover.

Coach Donald McDonald, while aware of a few missing Sharks, said he was happy to take a defensive victory considering the closeness of the competition.

Old Trinity remains in second separated by a win and 28 percent from Old Geelong in sixth.

Beaumaris, along with Caulfield, is now two games outside of the top four with a 4-5 record.

Old Geelong secured an important victory at home over De La Salle, making the most of its opposition’s poor conversion to run out 10-point winners.

Nick Hyland’s squad was “sloppy” in the first term and trailed by 11 points at the first break, registering a disposal efficiency of 48%.

Across the middle quarters though the visitors hauled their way back into the game but struggled to convert their opportunities in front of goal, punting 3.12 (30) from 28 inside 50s.

“It seemed every time we’d build momentum, they would answer with a quick goal,” Hyland explained.

“They took their chances and made us pay. Their ball movement was slick and we gave them too much time and space.”

Leading by eight points at three-quarter-time, Nathan Brown’s side held firm, kicking the first two goals of the quarter and holding off the De La charge to win 9.7 (61) to 6.15 (51).

“(It) was really even in contest, ball movement, but (we) just took our chances a little bit better to finish in front,” said Brown.

The Old Geelong coach lauded an “excellent” day out for Tim Jones, who racked up 30 disposals for the sixth time this season, while a returning Jack Sheridan was dominant at stoppage.

At 5-4, De La Salle’s aggregate losing margin comes in at a stunningly low 23 points - an average of a 5.75 point deficit per loss.

“(I) can’t fault our effort, just need to tidy up a couple of things which are within our control,” said Hyland.

Like De La, Old Ivanhoe have experienced its fair share of thrillers this season, playing in its fifth game decided by six points or less last weekend in a tight clash with Caulfield Grammarians

With a five-goal wind blowing, the Hoers leapt to 31-point quarter time lead, only to trail at the long break as Guy McKenna’s men rampaged back into the contest.

Caulfield’s Archie Loughnan (four goals) resumed his dangerous partnership with Julian Dobosz (three goals) up forward, the Grammarians were able to snatch the lead in the third term with three quick goals against the wind.

Ivanhoe found control however, kicking six of the remaining seven goals of the quarter, tasked with holding an 11-point lead in the last term.

It was up to Caulfield to respond - but in a tight final term, the home side managed only three goals to two in the last, Old Ivanhoe holding on 15.12 (102) to 14.12 (96)

“The players have built such a strong connection. It means such a lot to them, they never want to concede.” Old Ivanhoe coach Jarrod Gieschen said.

Old Ivanhoe is 4-1 in its five thrillers, third on the ladder with a percentage of 104.2%.

Billy Murphy was dominant all day for the Hoers, while year 12 student Tyson Nagel (playing with his brother Tiger for the first time at Premier level) was excellent on debut with three goals.

Keen watchers would’ve seen Michael Mitris’ name bob up on the Old Ivanhoe team sheet. A former captain of the club, Mitris announced his retirement at the end of 2022, returned to play in Old Ivanhoe’s winning run and Premier C flag in 2023, and featured on the weekend after recovering from a hamstring tendon injury.

Mitris kicked what would be the final goal of the game, his third, at the 13-minute mark of a tense final quarter.

Finally, Williamstown CYMS won its own thriller at Fearon Reserve, holding off a fast-finishing St Bedes / Mentone that, for the second round in a row, fell agonisingly short of its first win of the season.

Remarkably, having started the match 7.1 (43), the CYs proceeded to kick 1.13 (19) over a period stretching from the three-minute mark of the second quarter to the opening minute of the final term.

“(We) squandered an opportunity to put some distance between us and them,” CYs coach Con Terzoglou said.

With eight minutes gone in the final term, the Tigers trailed by 25 points but fought gallantly, piling on four goals in 13 minutes to tie the scores in time on.

It was then half-forward Will Bokma who grabbed a loose ball and snapped truly from 40 metres to put the CYs back in front with what would be the final goal of the game.

St Bedes / Mentone had its chances late, but Matthew Lehpamer’s shot in the final minute from beyond the arc faded to the left, seconds later the siren sounded with the home side victorious, 11.16 (82) to 11.12 (78).

Josh Cowan continued his outstanding season for the Tigers, the midfielder racking up 34 disposals, 12 clearances and a goal in another outstanding display.

It’s Williamstown CYMS’ second win of the season, with an opportunity for another against Old Geelong this weekend.

Next week, Old Camberwell host Old Ivanhoe, Old Haileybury meet Beaumaris, Caulfield pay a visit to De La Salle while St Bedes / Mentone will look to go to the break with a win in its match-up with Old Trinity.

Westbourne come close to dethroning the undefeated Williamstown CYMS

Round 9 of the VAFA Premier B Women’s competition saw some competitive matchups, with all teams coming back refreshed after the Bye round. Each team brought their A-game, resulting in standout performances and memorable moments, especially by Westbourne, who only went down to the undefeated Williamstown CYMS by two goals, showcasing their promise for the second half of the season.

St Bedes/Mentone Tigers delivered a commanding performance over Aquinas, securing a convincing 9.13 (67) to 1.2 (8) victory. From the outset, they established their dominance, displaying exceptional skill and teamwork that left Aquinas struggling to keep pace.

St Bedes forward line was particularly impressive in the first quarter, capitalising on every opportunity with precision and kicking four goals. Their relentless pressure and ability to convert turnovers into scoring opportunities were key factors in their comprehensive win. The captain duo of Madeline Pearson and Maddi Wilson were particularly threatening in offence, kicking two goals apiece.

Aquinas showed resilience and determination throughout the match. Their defensive unit worked tirelessly under immense pressure, with standout efforts from Emily Box, Meg Dargan, and Madison Mauchline. They managed to keep St Bedes goalless in the third quarter. However, the discrepancy in execution and finishing between the two sides was evident, with St Bedes/Mentone Tigers running away with it in the end.

Fitzroy continued their impressive run with a dominant 10.8 (68) to 2.3 (15) victory over Old Xaverians. Their well-structured game plan and cohesive team play were on full display, leaving Old Xaverians struggling to find answers.

From the first bounce, Fitzroy’s midfield took control, with their ability to win clearances and drive the ball forward being instrumental in setting up numerous scoring opportunities.

Georgia Bennett and Esther Boles were deadly in front of the sticks, finishing with two goals each. Steph Pitt, Tess Young, and Elyse Campbell were the stars of the day, earning their spot in Fitzroy’s best three on ground.

Old Xaverians showed glimpses of their potential, particularly through the efforts of Chiara Chiarelli, Jess Slupecki, and Mel Clarke. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to match the intensity and efficiency of Fitzroy.

Old Geelong secured a hard-fought 7.5 (47) to 3.3 (21) win over Beaumaris in a match that highlighted their resilience and ability to perform under pressure. The contest was fiercely competitive, with both teams displaying moments of brilliance.

Old Geelong’s victory was built on the back of their disciplined defensive efforts and efficient ball movement. Goalkicking star Matilda Arthur proved why she is the hot favourite for this year’s leading goal scorer, kicking five snags and being named in the top three players for the match.

Despite the loss, Beaumaris showcased their fighting spirit and skill, especially in the final quarter where they kept Old Geelong to one behind. Cassandra Newman, Sienna Tedde, and Georgia Tysoe were named amongst the best for their impressive displays of effort throughout the match.

In the closest match of the round, Williamstown CYMS edged out Westbourne Grammarians 4.1 (25) to 2.5 (17) in a thrilling contest that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. Both teams were evenly matched, with the game characterised by intense pressure and physicality.

This low-scoring affair saw a compelling first half, with a goalless first quarter and two goals apiece for the second quarter, bringing the score 14-12 in favour of Westbourne.

However, it was Williamstown’s ability to capitalise on crucial moments in the second half that proved to be the difference. Goal kickers Temeika Cathery and Jasmine Farrugia made the most of their limited opportunities, while their defence stood firm against Westbourne’s persistent attacks and kept them goalless for the second half.

Westbourne fought valiantly, with standout performances from Jasmine Farrugia, Kiara Henry, and Manaia Huta who worked tirelessly to drive their team forward. Their efforts kept Westbourne within striking distance throughout the match, but Williamstown’s composure in the final quarter secured the win.

This close contest will put Westbourne on the radar for the rest of the teams as a side not to be taken lightly as they find their momentum in the second half of the season to keep their finals aspirations alive.

As the competition progresses, the intensity and stakes continue to rise. Round 9 provided a glimpse into the thrilling action and high level of competition that defines the VAFA Prem B Women’s season. With each team striving for excellence, the journey towards the finals promises to be an exciting and unpredictable ride.

Round 10 will see Aquinas take on Old Xaverians at Manson Reserve, while Beaumaris will have the home ground advantage at Banksia Reserve against Fitzroy. Williamstown will face St Bedes/Mentone Tigers at Fearon Reserve, and Westbourne will see if they can keep their momentum from this round to topple second on the ladder Old Geelong at Andrew Park.

Hampton Rovers extended their winning streak to three games, defeating Glen Eira/Old McKinnon by 58 points. The first quarter was dominated by Glen Eira/ Old McKinnon who took a narrow three-point lead into quarter-time as the Rovers were inaccurate in front of goal.

However, the home side turned their fortunes around in the second quarter kicking five goals, whereby the Gryphons only managed to score just the one point.

The Rovers further built on this lead after half-time to lead by 59-points at three-quarter time, which ultimately proved to be too big a buffer for the Gryphons to overcome, as the Rovers comfortably got over the line 13.21 (99) to 6.5 (41).

This was an important game for the Rovers to win in order to keep fifth-placed Mazenod out of striking distance with the two separated by two wins and a healthy percentage gap.

In what was deemed by many as the most exciting matchup of the weekend, Old Carey successfully knocked off ladder leaders, the Parkdale Vultures, by 15 points in a thrilling contest at Gerry Green Reserve.

Old Carey well and truly dominated the first half, taking a 34-point lead to the main break, with the Vultures noticeably missing their star forward Mitch Brown. To their credit, in the absence of their key forward, Lewis Castle and Jai Elcock stepped up for the vultures slotting 3 apiece.

However, after half-time Parkdale did manage to match Old Carey’s scoring in the third quarter, finding themselves with a 30-point deficit at the final change.

To their credit, the Vultures fought hard in the final term kicking five goals to two. Although, it wasn’t enough

as Old Carey claimed the four points and now find themselves on top of the ladder in Premier C.

Luca Anderson and Isaac Ellwood were deemed best afield while Riley Thompson led the charge in front of the big sticks with 3 majors.

Mazenod beat the Monash Blues by 34 points in what was a pivotal game for the home side, in order to stay in touch with the top four.

Mazenod got off to a good start with two early goals and by quarter-time they were 11 points up. The hosts continued to put their foot down in the second term with three goals to one, carrying a healthy lead into the main break.

The Blues improved in the second half as their intent translated into more successful opportunities in front of goal. However, in front of their home crowd, Mazenod found a way and kicked a further 6 goals to 4 in the second half. The final score read nicely for Mazenod, a 12.8 (80) to 6.10 (46) win.

Monash are certainly a capable side with a lot of potential. Their clash next week against Old Carey will no doubt test them, nonetheless it will be a challenge the Blues look forward to.

AJAX had an emphatic 105-point victory over Oakleigh at Scammell Reserve. Like all top four sides, this was an important game for AJAX to re-iterate their dominance in Premier C and continue to push for a top two spot.

Oakleigh kicked the first goal of the game opening their account, but the momentum quickly swung back in AJAX’s favour as they kicked eleven of the next twelve goals to find themselves with an impressive 10-goal advantage at half-time.

AJAX continued their brilliance in the third term as some good ball movement and pressure up forward allowed them to kick six majors to Oakleigh’s one as the travelling side comfortably cruised home to claim the four points.

Richie Simon continued his stellar run of form for AJAX kicking a mighty seven goals to take his total goals this season to 48 at the half way point. Jordan Cohen also chimed in with seven of his own.

In the final game of the round, PEGS defeated Marcellin by 52 points to record their fourth win of the season. The home side burst out of the blocks scoring 5.5 (35) in the first term to Marcellin’s 0.1 (1).

Marcellin needed a response and that is what they delivered in the second quarter, kicking five goals to PEGS’ two to lower the deficit to 14-points at half-time.

It was emerging that there was a scoring end at the ground, this was again reflected in the third term. PEGS picked up their first term dominance which saw their lead increase to 49-points by three-quarter time in a quarter in which Marcellin were kept scoreless.

The final quarter was rather even, and despite PEGS faring better on the scoreboard, Marcellin’s pressure improved to limit PEGS’ scoring. PEGS ultimately in front as the final siren sounded, 15.12 (102) defeating Marcellin 7.8 (50).

Round 10 presents some intriguing matchups across the entire grade as the double-up matches begin. AJAX host PEGS at Gary Smorgon Oval. PEGS have shown they have a lot of promise and a win this weekend will keep their finals hopes alive.

Marcellin host Glen Eira/Old McKinnon in a battle of 8th v 7th. These teams are well-matched with just the one game separating the two sides. Old Carey takes on the Monash Blues. A win for Old Carey should keep them up the top however AJAX are breathing down their neck with percentage.

Meanwhile, the Parkdale Vultures meet the Hampton Rovers in a game that will feel more like a final as 3rd and 4th battle it out to improve their standings in the race for finals. Finally, Mazenod host Oakleigh with the Krushers searching for their first win.

Monash Blues’ Shane Chapman marks 300 games

In many ways, Shane “Muncha” Chapman is the ideal team-mate. On the ground he is a fierce and unyielding competitor. Playing most of his senior footy in the backline at Monash Blues, he was quick and tough and hard to play against. In later years he excelled on the ball and as a small forward with a nice bag of tricks. Off the ground, he celebrated hard and had fun with his teammates. At a club that really knows how to celebrate a win, Shane was a stand-out, often with his brother “Nibbler” right in the action.

More recently Shane has given coaching a go and has excelled at this, with success in our lower men’s grades and then taking on our senior women’s coaching with great acclaim. This led to a high point in 2023 when he coached our women to a historic premiership win and promotion to A Grade. He is widely respected and admired for his care and teaching skills as a coach.

300 games is a magnificent achievement at any time – over 20 years of footy is immense. To do this at a Uni club is almost unheard of. The entire Monash Blues community and the wider footy family sends love and best wishes to Shane on this magnificent milestone.

Ress Wade (MCC FC)

Women’s Rising Star Nominee

The VAFA congratulates Ress Wade from Melbourne Cricket Club Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 9 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Ress is new to football and has started to find her feet, earning a spot in the best for the past two weeks and is a commanding presence in the backline. What the Club said:

Ress came to MCCFC as a new player who had never played the game before. She came with an eagerness to learn, a great sense of humour and a take it on attitude which immediately appealed to me as a coach. She will be the first to agree that her skills were raw, and kicking was challenging. We started with the basics and Ress quickly showed a thirst for the contest and this competitive spirit, and her tackling enthusiasm soon marked her as a defender. She quickly became a leader in our backline as a strong, competitive and tight defensive player.

The key to Ress’s improvement has been due to the fact that she never misses a training session. After a very strong pre-season leading into 2024, Ress has added fitness, strength and speed to her game so that she has now become a ball carrier and our best rebounding defender. Ress has also improved her hand and foot skills over her journey, but most pleasing is her marking which has become very strong and I think is a direct result of her growing confidence. It is so pleasing that Ress has been nominated for this week’s Rising Star. Ress is a great football story of someone taking on something new with enthusiasm and an open mind. Well done Ress!

Outside of football, Ress is a barista and a creative writer soon to finish her first novel!

Men’s Rising Star Nominee

Harvey Emery (St John’s OC)

The VAFA congratulates Harvey Emery from St John’s OC Football Club, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 9. Harvey has been a reliable forward for the JOCS this season, using his agility to create scoring opportunities, kicking 5 on the weekend.

What the club said:

Harvey “Banger” Emery is one of four father sons currently playing seniors at St John’s Old Collegians this season along with his older brother Clayton, as well as Austin Waters and Jayden Rudd.

Playing his junior footy at Waverley Park Hawks and Under 19’s at Blackburn, Harvey couldn’t wait to get back to the club his father “Spider” dominated for many years as soon as he was finished with junior football. From the time Harvey has arrived at the club he hasn’t missed a beat, attends every training session and has played every senior game this year. Playing mainly as a mobile forward with stints in the midfield, Harvey is a versatile player with great aerial skills. His marking ability is second to none and is tough, quick and skilful. He is a bit quieter compared to his brother off the field but is a competitive beast on it, using his large frame to dictate terms with his opponent.

Senior Coach, Tim Edwards said, “Seeing Banger run around at his first training session I knew we had a talent on our hands. The way he moves he is a really smart footballer and his hands are some of the best I have seen. He is never out of the contest and has plucked some sensational marks this year from nowhere, he is such an exciting young talent”.

We as a club can’t wait to see Harvey develop over the next couple of years. He is a loved young man at the club and has the potential to take the competition by storm in years to come.

DIVISION 1 MEN’S

Old Yarra Cobras get on the board in a round of upsets

The Division 1 Men’s competition had a massive shake-up in Round 9 with three upset victories on the weekend. The effects of the bye round last week have made the race to the top four intriguing and hopefully we can expect more to come in the second half of the season.

Ormond defeated the Old Peninsula Pirates by 26 points in a close affair. The Monders’ ball movement by hand in the middle of the ground set the tone for a free flowing game. The Ormond midfield stood up early with Jackson Hille doing the grunt work inside to give it out to the likes of Rhys Kennedy who looked dangerous when delivering the ball inside 50. Lachlan Crnogorac was one of the receivers and certainly made most of his opportunities kicking five goals.

Meanwhile, a scuffle between both teams on the half-time siren seemed to have fired up the Pirates who knew they needed to be bold if they were to have any chance in drawing back the 25-point deficit. The defence of the Pirates was superb in the third quarter as Killian Doyle and Jake Lovett were great in the aerial battle and the aggressive ball use from Jake Williams helped their side put four goals on the bounce. A freakish goal from the boundary by Bailey Payze tied the scores up at threequarter time and instilled belief in the Pirates.

The Monders were under the pump with a goalless third term but found a way just like good teams do. The domination in possession and territory in the last term proved too much for Old Peninsula as Harrison Burt finished the job with a classy goal from long range.

The Old Yarra Cobras are off the mark, earning their first win of the season over Preston Bullants by 30 points. Coming off the bye the Old Yarra Cobras were wanting to build on their competitive last couple weeks and were off to a flyer. The Cobras were on top in the midfield, putting some needed attention Preston Bullants midfielder Sean Calcedo to get on top in the contest. The likes of David Tokatliyan and Anthony Raso were extremely efficient in front of goal, resulting in a 3-goal lead at quarter-time.

The midfield of the Old Yarra Cobras played a great game around the contest and provided elite defensive pressure which pleased Old Yarra Cobras coach Nathan Monaco. Leaders Nicholas Zappala and Tom Bell stepped up against a strong Preston Bullants engine room. The Old Yarra Cobras were a step ahead for the majority of the match

defending well against a strong breeze in the last quarter to come out trumps. A victory at the half way mark of the season will give them a spring in their step as they head for the home straight.

The Kew Bears made a statement defeating UHS-VU by 9 points, to serve the Vultures their first loss of the season. The Bears understood the gravity of the game needing a scalp to get themselves back into the top four discussions and certainly achieved it. The Bears dominated through the middle of the ground as Max Polettit took it up to the bigbodied Vulture midfield. The dash from Irishman Richard Hughes was too hard for the Vultures to defend, giving the Bears forwards one-on-one contests which helped the Bears kick six goals straight in the first quarter and put some scoreboard pressure on UHS.

The Bears were full of confidence in all facets of their game as they continued to kick away in the third-quarter. For most of the day, the Vultures struggled to put enough pressure in their forward half which resulted in the Bears being able to exit comfortably. Vultures defenders Fraser Campbell and James Gilfillan did well, given the quality of the ball coming into defence as Ned Waters and William Llewelyn contributed again. In the last term the Vultures kicked four goals in a row to give them some life but it was too late.

Another big upset was at Ransford Oval where the West Brunswick Magpies defeated the Parkside Devils by 6 points. From the outset the Magpies midfield dominated the Devils in the contest with Ben Ablett having an outstanding game but it was the ball movement from the likes of Steven Logozzo which gave the Devils a minor lead at half-time. The Magpies continued their domination in the stoppages and in the second half began to dominate aerially with ruckman Max Risstrom having a huge game.

With a 9-point lead at three-quarter time Brunswick knew the Parkside midfield would be a threat with the likes of Benedict Douglas in good form but an important goal by Magpies forward Thomas Zafiropoulos steadied the ship and helped them get their most impressive win of the season.

Prahran continued their great run of form defeating the Therry Penola Lions by 71 points. It was an even game in the first half with both teams attempting to gel better after the bye round. Therry Penola were competitive

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2024 26
Access Team Lists on PlayHQ via VAFA.com.au

in the first half trailing by only 9 points but after half-time the game opened up giving Prahran more space in their forward 50.

It was a tough second half for Therry Penola and a challenge in managing Prahran’s Matt Clifford, who was a standout kicking six goals for the game and is proving a tough matchup for opponents this season. An eight goal to one third term removed any chance of another upset for the round as Prahran moves to second on the ladder.

Round 10 entails season defining matches and opportunities for young sides to disrupt the race for the top four.

Therry Penola is back at home as they take on Ormond. Efficiency inside 50 and scoreboard pressure for Therry Penola will be crucial against a team who can punish when given the chance. Aidan Soria continues to be clinical in front of goal this season kicking two goals against the Pirates and will prove a tough matchup this weekend.

Old Peninsula play the Preston Bullants in what is a must-win game for both teams. Both sides have a great core group but at times this year their depth has been tested. The team that prevails will have a whole team effort this weekend.

West Brunswick host Kew at Ransford Oval this weekend. The battle between the two midfields will be intriguing as the Bears form in the past fortnight has been strong.

The game of the round will be a top four clash between Parkside and the UHS-VU at Pitcher Park. Both teams will be looking to respond after disappointing losses.

The Old Yarra Cobras have another challenge against a welldrilled Prahran side. If the Old Yarra Cobras played the way they did against the Preston Bullants and play a four-quarter effort they will be in with a shot.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S

Competition shakes up after favourites pull off huge victories

Fresh off the bye and ready to attack the second half of the season, it was clear the premiership favourites in Old Brighton and Marcellin benefitted from the week off and were ready to issue a warning to the competition as finals looms.

Both wins were impressive, but it was Marcellin who found form reminiscent of their 2023 season as they posted a 118-point win over fellow flag hopeful Collegians

There was really not much to celebrate for Collegians, held goalless for the entire game as Marcellin piled on 118 points from 38 scoring shots. Had Marcellin kicked more accurately, the scoreline threatened to be a lot larger as they registered 16.22.

Alana Pane produced a best on ground performance with three goals and her seventh best player mention of the season. Zoe Glascott took her goal tally to 29, with a huge six-goal haul. With seven different goal scorers, it was hard to allocate just six of the best performances, but the accolades went to Billie Harvey, Charlotte McGilp, Olivia Frost, Tania Carpinteri and Annaleise Xanthos who led their team to victory.

Collegians did not select any players at the time of writing.

Next week, Marcellin will host Old Melburnians on Saturday afternoon, whilst Collegians face another tough opponent in top of the ladder Old Brighton at Brighton Beach Oval on Saturday morning.

Old Haileybury also had a tough day out on Saturday against cup favourites Old Brighton, held to three points for the entire game whilst Old Brighton registered 57-points to soar to a 54-point victory.

Impressively, Old Brighton strung together a 29-point first half, followed by a 28-point second half to consolidate the lead all whilst holding Haileybury goalless. Captain India Tait was the best on ground once again as she makes a strong case for the Team of the Year, whilst Sienna Courtney was impressive with four goals. Caterina O’Brien, Jasmine Tait, Katie Grant, Charley Hodgson, and Sophie Grant all played strong games.

Although it was a tough day for Haileybury, co-captain Isabella Scaunich led from the front showing off strong leadership skills and registering her eighth best on ground for the season across just nine games. Scaunich is another who is making a strong case for inclusion in the Team of the Year.

Next up, Old Haileybury face an evenly matched side in Parkdale. Despite a large gap in their percentage, if Old Haileybury win they will draw equal with Parkdale and two games off Collegians pending the results of other games. Marcellin will take on the bottom of the ladder Old Melburnians.

The most evenly contested game of the round was between the Parkdale Vultures and Old Melburnians, with OMs storming to their second win of the season and an impressive one at that.

A massive second quarter set up victory for the team, scoring three goals and holding Parkdale to just the two behinds. A low scoring third quarter evened up the contest, before Old Melburnians came storming home in the last quarter with 2.3 to solidify victory.

Despite still sitting on the bottom of the ladder, their form looks much improved coming off the back of the bye.

On a tough day for Parkdale, Sienna Symons and Hannah Radford both had a goal apiece whilst Lucy Burgess, Hannah McCorquodale and Rachel Watson were all impressive. For Old Melburnians, Prue Harvey was a clear standout with four goals to her name. Ella Bennetts, Emily Fraser and Abigail Proper also had notable games.

Next up, Old Melburnians will be hoping to showcase their new form streak against the current form team of the competition in Marcellin, made even tougher by the fact they will travel to play on Marcellin’s home turf. Parkdale Vultures will be hoping to bounce back against Old Haileybury.

Next week looms as a challenging week for a lot of teams as they travel to take on premiership favourites and prove their own credentials, whilst others will be looking to shake off the post bye blues.

DIVISION 2 MEN’S

Bulleen Templestowe cause an upset, as Whitefriars fly into fourth

The excitement continues as we delve into the second half of the Division 2 Men’s season. The Bye round presented an opportunity for teams to recharge the batteries and pull together a game plan with finals on the horizon.

Brunswick, leading the table, continues to dominate postbreak, solidifying their status as the most formidable team this season and are yet to drop a game. They extended their winning streak by defeating Hawthorn by 17 points, marking their second victory over the Hawks this season.

Despite the final margin, this win was all but convincing. Hawthorn to their credit led the charge right through the first half putting the pressure on the visiting side. Although the Hawks held an 8-point lead at the main break, the Nobs staged a late comeback to charge home to the finish line. Brunswick switched up a gear and started playing a more aggressive style of football to retain possession and convert on the scoreboard.

The Hawks did have their chances late, but were unable to convert on the scoreboard, scoring 1.6 in the final term, with the final scoreboard reading 84-101.

Angus Coverdale was the player of the match, booting 6 goals to take Brunswick to the top. Hawthorn’s Justin Raiti kicked 3 goals, and William Meehan supported him kicking 2 goals.

After the game, Hawthorn’s coach, Mark Murray, said, “Overall, it was a good game, and we just didn’t take our chances. We are getting a few crucial players back for the next week. Brunswick is an excellent side in the competition, and it will be hard for every team to defeat them.”

The Bye round has stunted the momentum of a fiery St Mary’s Salesian outfit, with Elsternwick putting an end to the Saints three-match winning streak with a 42-point victory. The Wickers defeated the underdogs St Mary’s for the second time this season.

The match at Elsternwick Park got off to a slow start, as defenders from both teams were excellent at stopping the attack, with just one goal scored at each end. Elsternwick turned on the jets in the second quarter to score 5.4, with the ever-reliable Spencer Hankin leading the charge, while the Saints registered just 3 behinds.

Things went from bad to worse for the Saints in the second half with inaccuracy plaguing their ability to get themselves

back in the game. They scored 1.15 after the main break; a total number of scoring shots that could well have produced a very different outcome than the final score of 72-30.

Hankin kicked 4 goals for the game, while Dylan Jones finished with 2 and Paul Sanderson was deemed best afield. For the Saints, Ben Tricarico and Joel Mattiske stood out in an uphill battle.

After the game, St Mary’s coach, Clay Tait, said, “We didn’t play a good game, and we were kicking the ball inaccurately. We must pick ourselves up from this loss, make a comeback, and be accurate while kicking the goals.”

Meanwhile, the winning coach, Peter Higginbotham, said, “The first quarter was very high pressure, with both sides not backing down. Getting a clear possession was tough. We spoke about maintaining the pressure around the contest and moving forward quickly at every opportunity, which worked for us.”

Whitefriars are back with a bang after the break, defeating Aquinas 121-58 at Whitefriars College Oval.

The hosts trailed by 11 points in the first quarter. But slowly and steadily, the Friars clawed their way back to hold a 7-point advantage at the half. This marginal buffer turned into a full-blown safety net after the Friars produced a mammoth 7.5 goal premiership quarter. Aquinas were slipping away and could not hold on as the Whitefriars ran away with a 63-point victory.

Credit to Sam Kieseker’s 5 goals, which helped the Friars gain considerable momentum, with James Perrin kicking 4 of his own. Aquinas captain Michael Di Donato booted 3 goals and was one of six individual goal scorers.

Friars coach Luc Matthews expressed his happiness after the game, saying, “We knew they would be physical, so we had to absorb them and their pressure and then get the game on our terms.”

At Lindsay Hassett Oval, South Melbourne Districts secured a convincing 76-39 win over MHSOB, marking MHSOB’s second loss to South Melbourne this season.

South Melbourne began the game impressively, establishing a commanding 24-point lead in the first quarter, setting the stage for what appeared to be a one-sided match.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2024 32

However, MHSOB players rallied in the second quarter to stage a resurgence.

In the third quarter, South Melbourne came out of nowhere again, and MHSOB only scored a single point, which ultimately cost them the final result.

South Melbourne’s Jesse Andrew kicked 4 goals for his team, while Vincenzo Armenia was best on. At the other end, Cleve Westley and Nick McKinnon led from the front for the Unicorns.

In the upset of the round, Bulleen Templestowe emerged victorious for the third time this season, defeating a strong Wattle Park outfit in tightly contested matchup. The final margin of 11 points was not indicative of the dominance the Bullants asserted over the duration of the game right from the outset.

The game kicked off with a goal from Lachlan Sticca of Bulleen Templestowe. Throughout the first three quarters, the match remained tightly contested. The Animals attempted to gain momentum in the final quarter but fell short by a few points.

To their credit, both sides held strong defensively, which made it difficult for players to attack the footy and hit the scoreboard.

Lachlan Sticca and Bullants vice-captain Corey Shiels slotted 2 majors each for the victors, while Baxter Newbegin scored 3 goals to further Wattle Park’s agenda.

The tenth round will be a must-watch as the teams are eager to climb the points table. At Gillion Oval, Brunswick will face South Melbourne Districts, which is also said to be a must-watch game. Whitefriars will indeed look to maintain their winning momentum against Bulleen Templestowe.

St Mary’s Salesian will play against MHSOB at Ferndale Park, Aquinas will host Hawthorn at Aquinas College, and Wattle Park will look to make a comeback against Elsternwick.

Mazenod test the ladder leaders, as Whitefriars exert their dominance

Fresh off a Bye, and it certainly showed in Division 2 Women’s. Everyone had a spring in their step and a couple of sides let it rip on the scoreboard, with Whitefriars and Power House registering 44- and 45-point wins respectively. The ladder is taking shape and a clear top 4 starting to form, but with 7 rounds to go there is still plenty of time for the middle order to make a late challenge.

The round kicked off at Rathmines Road Reserve with Whitefriars exerting their dominance on the road to take home the chocolates against Hawthorn. Things started slow with the Hawks kicking the lone goal of the first quarter, whilst the Friars started a little shaky in front of the big sticks, registering 4 behinds.

Whitefriars were assertive in the second and showed up with a 3-goal display to win the quarter and tilt momentum in their favour. Things went from bad to worse for the Hawks come the final term. They let a 23-point deficit slip to a 44-point margin come the final siren, which speaks to the impressive and skilful display of the Whitefriars outfit.

The final scoreboard read 14-58 in favour of the visitors with accolades awarded to Meave Bohanna for her 3-goal performance, alongside Lizzy Yore and Cassie Bruce who starred for the Whitefriars.

Hawthorn’s leadership stood up when it mattered on a tough day out and were well-supported by Charlotte Miller.

Power House delivered one of their best performances of the season against Old Trinity on home soil. Not only were they able to hit the scoreboard but they kept their opponent to just a single goal for the match in a first-class defensive effort.

Power House put their foot down right from the get go, extending their lead at each break, whilst Old Trinity were kept scoreless until their goal came off the boot of captain, Bella Eames in the final quarter.

Power House shared the ball around with Maire Condon, Joanne Down, and Ella Moore all scoring 2 goals, while Ciara Boyle also hit the scoreboard with 1. With a final score of 7.9.51, the damage cause by Power House could have been even more lethal but inaccuracy kept the final margin at 45 points.

In contrast, over at Kevin Bartlett Reserve, it was a low scoring affair with a total of 3 goals scored for the match. It was a back forth tussle for the full four quarters, but it was Oakleigh who walked away victorious over Richmond Central

Both sides had their opportunities finishing with more behinds than goals, and will look to clean up their connection going forward. Pia Hobday and Bonnie Nolan hit the scoreboard for Oakleigh with a goal apiece, whilst Therese Tynan score the Snakes goal.

This win keeps Oakleigh in fourth spot for now, but they will be tested with the middle order nipping at their heels. Emily Cashman was best on for the winning side and Isabella Rao impressed for Richmond.

Hampton Rovers produced a convincing win over Old Camberwell/AJAX. The Rovers are putting together a comprehensive season and in a tight competition it will be a race to the finish where every win counts.

The Rovers had scoring shots aplenty but it didn’t quite click for them slotting an inaccurate 3.15. Although they failed to register more than 3 behinds, the Old Camberwell/AJAX side put pressure on around the ground, preventing a greater deficit at the final siren.

Natasha Morris and Millie Smith were deemed best afield for the home side, while at the other end, Isabel Dedoncker and Isabella Griffin led from the front on a tough day out.

It was not all smooth sailing at Packer Park as ladder leaders Glen Eira/Old McKinnon were tested by a hungry Mazenod side who were searching for their first win of the season. Mazenod took an early lead, kicking the opener and managed to hold a lead right through the final change.

The Gryphons would have gone into this match as clear favourites and expected all but to be trailing throughout 3 quarters. To their credit, Mazenod gave it their all with nothing to lose, and everything to gain, conquering the top of the table team.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2024 34
Access Team Lists on PlayHQ via VAFA.com.au

In the fourth and final term, Glen Eira was able to steady the ship and regain control in the match, scoring 1.5 to charge home with a victory. Hayley Carter and Aleesha Whittle stepped up to be named best for the home side.

Unfortunately, Mazenod couldn’t hold off the Gryphons any longer and relinquished a lead they fought so hard to create, but should hold their heads up high being able to go toe-totoe with the best in the competition. Emma Neilson and Ella Camerotto were just two of many notable performances for Mazenod.

With Round 9 in the books, let’s look to the coming weekend with multiple blockbuster matchups. The drought will come to an end for either Mazenod or Old Camberwell/AJAX as one side will come away with their first 4 points in the Div 2 Women’s competition, as they face off on Saturday Morning.

Higher up the ladder, the Hampton Rovers host Power House in a must see match up with only percentage dividing the two third and fourth placed sides. Oakleigh will come up against Hawthorn, whilst Old Trinity will host a red-hot Whitefriars and look to get back on the winners list.

Lastly, Glen Eira/Old McKinnon will travel to play Richmond Central and will need to win should they be looking to retain a one game advantage atop the ladder.

DIVISION 3 MEN’S

Richmond Central surge into top-five, as ladder leaders flex their muscles

Division 3’s top teams weren’t mucking around in Round 9, with triple-figure thrashings being the theme of the weekend.

St John’s picked up where they left off, recording a 120-point smashing over Chadstone. An eight-goal opening term by the JOCs set them in motion, outclassing a resilient Synners side. St John’s extended their lead to over 100 points by three-quarter time, and a further six majors in the last quarter capped off a dominant display.

St John’s had 11 individual goalkickers in the match, however Matthew Carnelley’s eight was the standout. Mitch Barry and Harvey Emery also booted bags of five, as Callum Houghton was deemed best on ground.

Despite the large margin, Chadstone managed multiple goals each quarter. Bethel Loh (4), Ben Ogilvie (3), and Lachie Dowsett (3) combined for ten of the Synners 11 goals for the match, with Logan Stott earning the most BOG votes for Chadstone.

Chadstone have the chance to rectify their loss against the winless Box Hill North next week, in a predicted tight match.

A second-half blitz from North Brunswick has ensured their unbeaten streak continues, with a 108-point win against Albert Park. A Division 4 Grand Final rematch, the Falcons played defiantly in the opening quarter to try avenge last year’s defeat, kicking the first two goals of the game.

The Bulls switched on soon after however, and grinded out an 18-point advantage by halftime. A 16 goal to 2 second-half quashed any chance of an Albert Park upset, as the Bulls ran rampant. North Brunswick piled on five goals in the last ten minutes of action, ensuring a ladder percentage of over 200% was maintained.

Selected last week in the Big V squad, Fletcher Banfield was once again best on for North Brunswick, as Luke Russell kicked five. Felix Metz, Joshua Rennie and Hamish West were amongst Albert Park’s best, as the Falcon’s look to refresh following their Round 10 bye.

Despite a competitive effort in the first half, Box Hill North were defeated by a hungry Power House outfit at Elgar Park. Power House were defeated comprehensively by St John’s last round, and rebounded with energy after the bye.

The Demons led throughout the majority of the first term, however trailed by four points at the break. Missed opportunities in the second quarter gave way for Power House to increase their advantage, but the game still hung in the balance with a 21-point halftime margin. However, as great teams do, Power House managed to click into gear and barraged the Demons with ten third-quarter goals, followed by seven more in the last.

Box Hill North Coach Jeff D’Amato found positives out of his Demons first half. “We started really well with great pressure, and we matched one of the top Div 3 contenders for two quarters. We should’ve been in front at the half with squandered opportunities in front of goal,” D’Amato said.

“To Power House’s credit, after the long break they came out a much determined, hungry team and smashed us in the clearances… We’ll look to regroup and train hard four our next two against Chadstone and Eley Park.”

PHAFC ultimately ran out 108-point winners, as Luke Stubbs kicked an enormous 11 goals. Benjamin Circosta and James Kiernan were also amongst the best for Power House.

In a high-stakes match, Richmond Central have extended La Trobe University’s losing streak with a 37-point victory. The Snakes were defensively sound throughout the match, holding La Trobe to just 16 points at halftime. Richmond Central were additionally impressive in attack, kicking an accurate 9.1 (55) in the first half.

La Trobe matched the Snakes in the second half; however, the damage was already done. The Trobers managed to outscore Richmond Central by five points to reduce the final margin to 37.

With this result, the Snakes have slithered their way up into fifth position on the Div 3 ladder, as their Match Ratio has overtaken Swinburne University’s. Despite a 1-3 start to the year, the Snakes have won their last four in a row to

produce a mid-season surge. They play Eley Park next week in an opportunity to make it a fifth-consecutive win, and maintain their current finals spot.

Canterbury have flexed their muscles against Swinburne University, and now sit a game clear in second place. The Cobras wrestled an eight-point quarter-time lead after a gritty opening term, but kicked away in the second. The Razorbacks managed to linger in the contest up until the last quarter, trailing by just under five goals at three-quarter-time. However, a 9-2 goal final term burst open the floodgates for Canterbury, as they ran out 62-point victors.

Jayden Cutts and Brad Kelleher kicked six each, joining James Boarotto, Nathan Beacom and Samuel Hinton in the best.

Liam Brunton and Justin Burch were the Razorbacks best as Aidan Vesty punted three.

A top-of-the-table clash highlights a thrilling round of Division 3 football to come. North Brunswick face their biggest threat to their undefeated record, as they host an in-form Canterbury side. The Cobras will be out for revenge after falling short by seven points to the Bulls in Round 3.

Swinburne play St John’s and La Trobe face Power House in two season-shaping matches for the collegiate sides, both now sitting out of the top-five.

Richmond Central host Eley Park, and Box Hill North encounter Chadstone in a prime opportunity to get on the winners list for 2024. Albert Park has the bye.

HOLMESGLEN U19’S

De La Salle endure heartbreak and Uni Blues issue a statement victory

Fresh off the competition-wide bye, a handful of teams in the Holmesglen Under 19 Men’s competition are beginning to make moves and impose themselves upon the league. After a muchneeded week off, players and coaches across the competition have taken the opportunity to rest, recalibrate and prepare for the second half of the season.

Round 10 would see footy return in mesmerising fashion, a Round, rich with exhilarating contests and memorable performances.

The opening matchup of the round saw an early-morning contest between an established Old Scotch and a steadily building Williamstown CYMS outfit. Controlling the game from the outset, Old Scotch shot out to an initial 23-point buffer.

Maintaining the lead for a majority of the contest, Williamstown battled hard to reel the lead in to a manageable 15 points heading into the final quarter. Ultimately, it would be the class of Old Scotch that would shine through, weathering the late Williamstown attack to conclude the game as 20-point victors.

Matthew Mayes was enormous throughout the contest for Scotch, with Finn Nankervis providing strong run. Sammy Vidor also impressed, whilst James Davies led all goalkickers, finishing with three majors.

Continuing their impressive form, Old Scotch have now moved into second position, and prove to be legitimate contenders heading into the backend of the season.

For Williamstown, Xavier Snelling was named best afield, with strong performances coming from Andreas Martinez, Jack Billington and Noah Hannaford.

Later in the schedule, Old Brighton showcased their strength, powering past Caulfield Grammarians to win by 93 points.

A hard-fought opening term from both sides resulted in a firstquarter lead to Brighton, Caulfield’s defensive unit under heavy fire early.

The floodgates would soon open, the ladder leaders piling on a flurry of goals to reach the final siren as resounding victors. A thoroughly dominant display throughout the remainder of the contest, Old Brighton would continue their winning ways to remain two games clear atop the ladder standings.

Cooper Dowe, Thomas Marriott, Mason Szonyi, Ryan McKenzie and Sam Litis were pivotal in the win, whilst Zachary Bowen ended his day with five majors.

Another matchup of Round 10 saw Beaumaris fall to a stunning St Kevin’s outfit at Banksia reserve. Requiring a victory to remain within top four contention, SKOB dominated from the opening bounce, leading at every break to register a commanding 44-point win.

Conor Lynch was spectacular in the win, whilst Sam Jones, Liam Edwards, Xavier Duke, Ben Cantwell and Roshan Fernandes performed strongly.

Another loss for Beaumaris sees the Sharks linger in the bottom half of the ladder. Aiden McCarthy impressed on the day, whilst Mitchell Davidson continued his form.

The first of the Saturday afternoon matchups would see University Blues continue their red-hot form to down Old Xaverians and stamp their newly-found authority upon the competition.

Trailing by two goals at the conclusion of the first quarter, the Blues would soon stun their opposition, piling on a barrage of goals to snatch the lead back. The Blues would continue this trend, overpowering the Old Xaverians comprehensively to rampage home and record an upset 63-point victory.

Dominance personified, the Blues would make the might of Old Xavs look feeble, kicking ten goals to three in the second half.

A true team effort, the Blues had a whopping 11 differing goal kickers, William Furphy heading that list with four goals.

Carl Ziebarth was also outstanding, as well as George McCulloch, Jack Anderson, Luca Di Lallo and Henry Meggitt.

For Old Xavs, the loss means that they have now relinquished second position on the ladder, falling back with the pack of teams fighting it out for a finals spot. Ed Dalton, Fred Visentini and Tom Bourne shone in the loss.

The very best matchup of the round would be saved for last, as St Bedes/Mentone Tigers edged past De La Salle to win by a single point. Winless throughout the year, De La Salle looked destined to notch up their first win of season 2024. A last gasp from St Bedes/ Mentone would prove to be their undoing.

An exhilarating contest that simply had it all, SBM trailed at every single quarter break, mounting a last quarter comeback to break De La Salle hearts. It was James Harper who led the way for De La, whilst Anthony Liakakos and Joshua Stewart also toiled hard.

Cooper Donnellan, Oliver Griffin and Flynn Groves were vital in the orchestration of the last quarter comeback, setting up timely goals. With the miracle win, the Tigers remain in touch with the upper echelon of the ladder standings, and are poised to make a play at the top four.

A breathtaking weekend of football and the race to finals is still wide open. Next week’s round proves to hold a handful of matchups which will have drastic repercussions… Old Scotch will do battle with Old Xaverians in a headline matchup that will pit two heavyweight sides against each other.

St Kevin’s will look to continue their winning ways against ladderleaders Old Brighton, whilst Caulfield Grammarians will face Uni Blues in a cutthroat contest that will have intense ramifications for each side’s season ambitions.

De La Salle will look to register their first win against the out of form Beaumaris, and Williamstown CYMS will face St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers in an intriguing bout.

Dacia Abela (Coburg)

This week leadership group member and Inaugural best and fairest winner Dacia Abela will reach the 50-game milestone for the club. An inspirational leader who has been with Coburg Women’s since the first game in 2021. An extremely handy back, who has been named in team of the year, won the first club best and fairest and is a member of our senior leadership group. Congratulations Dacia on this 50-game milestone!

Kate Bond (La Trobe University)

Congratulations to La Trobe’s Kate Bond on reaching 100 games – Bondy joined the Trobers in 2015 playing all but a couple of games in the Seniors over her 10 seasons with the Club. Kate is one of La Trobe’s greatest women’s players, a dominant midfielder, five times club best & fairest winner and 2018 League Coaches MVP. Well done Bondy on joining a select group of 73 Trobers who have played 100 games in the red & black!

Darcy Ryan (Therry Penola)

200

One of Thery’s most versatile players, Darcy reaches his 200th game milestone this weekend. Starting in 2011, from a matriarch family of Therry, he is a Premiership player, VAFA representative and huge asset to our Club on and off the field. Whether in the ruck, up forward or down back, or helping organise events, Darcy plays a pivotal role week in week out for Therry. Congratulations Darcy on your achievements.

Michael Karayannis (Old Brighton)

200

200

Michael Karayannis, ran out for his 200th milestone game last Saturday where the fans turned up to celebrate this club legend. Karra has terrorised oppositions with his forward pressure and goal kicking in a career that spans 15 years, includes 3 Leading Goalkicker awards and 3 Premierships: 2009 in the Under 19s, and the 2013 and 2017 Premier B Senior flags. An Old Brighton legend on and off the field, congratulations Mikey on becoming a 200 Game Life Member!

Albert Kuang (MHSOB)

A huge congratulations to Albert Kuang, who played his 200th game for the Unicorns last weekend. Albert made his debut in 2010, whilst still in Year 11 at Melbourne High, and played his first 50 games in the U19s. Since 2021, Albert has been a staple of a resurgent 3rds side, assuming the captaincy in 2022 and leading them to a preliminary final the following year. Combining courage that belies his stature with a deadly left foot, Albert has made the wing his home and never misses an opportunity to launch a torpedo inside 50. With his unique sense of humour, his love of playing football with his mates, and above all his unwavering commitment to making MHSOBFC a better place, Albert is a much-loved fixture of our club and we look forward to many more games to come.

Daniel Tonelli (Bulleen Templestowe)

200

250

Congratulations to Dan Tonelli who brought up his 200th club game against Wattle Park last weekend! Dan is a 2x premiership player for the Bullants, playing a key role in the U19’s 2006 and senior 2012 flags! He’s a loyal clubman, offering support both on and off field since hanging up his boots. Dan becomes one of only 38 Bullants to reach this incredible milestone! There was a great turnout with many who have connected with Dan along the journey wanting to celebrate his milestone.

Matthew Lyons (Therry Penola)

Congratulations to Matt Lyons on playing 250 games. Matt is a two-time Club Champion, premiership player and VAFA representative. One of Thery’s best midfielders since 2009 when he joined the Club, he puts himself on the line every game. His leadership, particularly with a young group of senior players, has been invaluable and he joins some elite company in reaching 250 games. Well done Matt.
